Welcome

To my island.

Jersey National Park

Page 62

Long summer days bring back memories of an adventurous youth. Growing up on Jersey’s east coast between Le Hocq and La Rocque Harbour offered fantastic - and sometimes mischievous - explorations in a magical playground. This is Europe’s largest rocky intertidal area, stretching over 3000 hectares from Havre des Pas to Gorey. Since the year 2000, it’s been part of the internationally designated Ramsar wetland convention, a marine version of a National Park. As a child, it was – and still is – an intriguing microcosm, an everchanging coast between the tides where I learnt respect for the forces of nature and its beauty.

My parents took me low water fishing towards Icho Tower. But we also explored rockpools and looked for crabs under seaweeds. The first kayak came from my father’s workshop. Being on the water and walking the coast has become a passion. My wife Trudie and I never get bored taking groups to Seymour Tower – though we also love the lush valleys of Jersey’s interior and appreciate the path for walkers and cyclists through St Peter’s Valley.

Bouley Bay

Page 86

La Hougue Bie

Page 76

The gentle pace of a walk or a kayak tour allows you to observe in a different way, feel dwarfed at the bottom of an awesome cliff near Bouley Bay or marvel about a tiny cushion starfish or an irridescent seaweed by Green Island. We move in soundscapes created by nature, waves, wind, birds or sand sweeping over the beach. Jersey can pride itself on unique and exciting cultural places like La Hougue Bie where Neolithic man – 6000 years ago – aligned the passage to a ritual chamber with the rising sun during the equinox. At the same time the island offers a fantastic natural environment, star studded skies, a low horizon, spaces to breathe and lots of wind to blow the cobwebs away.

Jersey is to be enjoyed with all your senses.

New(s) this season.

The Somerville Hotel - St. Aubin Refurbished for the season

This four-star hotel located in St. Aubin has refurbished its bedrooms, with an extension of the fun and exciting modern-Victorian scheme and concept that has been so well received in the hotel's restaurants Voyager and Tides. All will be paying homage to the hotels 140 years in service, it’s prominent place in an exciting time of the birth of tourism in Jersey, and of course Somerville founder Mr J.W. Chapman’s eccentric Bon vivant nature.

The Moorings Hotel - Gorey Mr & Mrs Smith recommended!

This long-time favourite has recently undergone a refurbishment, whilst retaining its original charm and character. Situated in the heart of Gorey Pier on the east coast of Jersey, The Moorings is a year-round hotspot. This boutique development now boasts four single rooms, eleven double rooms and several family rooms, many of which offer exceptional views over the Royal Bay of Grouville to France. The Moorings also offers a locally sourced rotating menu, including Grouville oysters and Jersey lobster. It’s so good that it made the echelons of the Mr & Mrs Smith guide.

10 WHAT’S ON

The Porter’s Store New tucked away venue

Since the early days Porters would await on Albert Pier with wheelbarrows to welcome guests to the island and assist with their luggage. Long days and hard work meant there were rumours of a place where they would gather out of view and off duty - until now. The Porter’s Store (Wharf St.) welcomes you into a previously unseen location of the Pomme d’Or Hotel. Serving eclectic cocktails, all inspired by their stories of the hotel and the guests they’d meet. It’s pitched as a destination for after work drinks, nightcaps and everything in between.

Upstairs at Anley Street Get behind the curtain

A small intimate dining room and cocktail bar. Opening for lunch and dinner, the bar area is available to walk-ins for drinks and small plates. The restaurant takes reservations and offers a menu that encourages family style dining, celebrating classic British plates. The menu rotates each week and we’re big fans.

The Watchmaker It’s wine time

An intimate and cosy wine, champagne and charcuterie bar located in the heart of St. Helier, taking its name from the original use of the 18th Century building. Serving sharing boards that are perfect for grazing, sandwiches and bar snacks. The wine menu and drinks offering is thoughtfully curated, with a focus on wines, Champagne and cocktails.

Bohemia 18 years of Michelin-stars

Bohemia Restaurant, located within The Club Hotel & Spa in St. Helier, has retained its Michelin-star for a 18th year. Bohemia remains the only restaurant in Jersey to hold a Michelin-star. From foie gras to hand dived scallops, diners can experience new flavours and textures with its set menu which costs £99 person. For extra indulgence add sommelier wine pairing for £59 per person. It really is something you need to do during your stay, if you can get a reservation.

UNIQUELY JERSEY.

Seven island experiences as chosen by locals.

It’s not always about the places you visit and the things you do when you’re on holiday, it’s about the memories you make while you’re there. Add to your Jersey memory list with a few of these favourite unique experiences.

Sunrise from a fort.

A sunset is beautiful, but there’s something very special about watching the sun rise over the sea, especially when it’s from inside the walls of your very own historic fort on the edge of the cliffs. Surrounded on three sides by the sea, La Crête Fort is set in one of Jersey’s most breathtaking spots –and available as a holiday let with Jersey Heritage.

Sunset over the sea.

The beauty of an island is that you can see both the sunrise and the sunset over the sea – it just depends on which side you’re on. Frame Jersey’s stunning sunsets at a heritage spot like The Barge Aground heritage holiday let, sit up on the roof, sundowner in hand and enjoy watching the bay turn sunset orange.

Desert island yoga.

Why not swap your beach yoga for some ‘deserted island’ yoga? Join a yoga trip out to the Minquiers sandbanks, a 45 minute boat ride away from Jersey and get your Satsang on in a unique island location, where turquoise seas and white sands meet the sky. You could even see dolphins on the way there…

Storm the castle.

There aren’t many medieval castles that you can abseil down… but if you’re intrepid enough, you can abseil down the walls of Mont Orgueil Castle with the sea in the background and get a hands on view of history.

Zookeeper for a day.

Walk in the footsteps of Gerald Durrell and try your hand at being a zookeeper. At the famous conservationist’s zoo, you can get an insider’s view of looking after your favourite animals, from gorillas and orangutans to otters and meerkats. Durrell Wildlife encounters are available for a limited number of days each month.

Michelin-starred cream tea.

Sweet-toothed foodie? Don’t miss the spectacular afternoon tea at Michelin-starred and five AA Rosette winners Bohemia. Tiers of dainty pastries, scones and sandwiches, mini caddies of speciality teas and even an afternoon tea cocktail or two for pure luxury. Ask for a spot outside by the pool if the weather’s fine. From £19.95 per person.

Stars at your feet.

As well as some of the largest tides in the world, in Jersey you can experience a rare natural phenomenon as the tide falls. Natural bioluminescence is the greenish glow given off by hundreds of tiny glowworms. See it for yourself in Jersey with a guided bioluminescence walk with Jersey Walk Adventures.

Things to know while you’re here

Where are you?

You’re on our beautiful little island in the English Channel but you’re a lot closer to France (around 14 miles at the closest point) than you are to England (closer to 100 miles). You’re surrounded by four other main Channel Islands; Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm and a handful of smaller inhabited and uninhabited islands. Our nearest coastal towns in France are Granville and the historic port of SaintMalo. The term “Channel Islands” began to be used around 1830, possibly first by the Royal Navy as a collective name for the islands.

Arriving and leaving

If you arrive by air you’ll be one of a historical average of 1.6 million passengers per year to use Jersey Airport in the west of the island. Served by buses and taxis for onward travel right outside the arrivals hall, hire car services are also available inside the arrivals hall. Foreign exchange and postal services, including posting excess baggage are available in the departures hall.

Money

Pounds Sterling is the legal tender but we also have our own banknotes and coins which are classed as accepted tender elsewhere in the UK, people can take it, but they don’t have to - so don’t forget to spend your last few pound notes on souvenirs before you leave. If you forget though, a pound note also makes a great souvenir. Also, if you hold one of our bank notes up to the light you’ll not see Queen Elizabeth II’s image in the hologram but the image of one of our own royalty.

If you’re wearing your sea legs, you’ll have arrived in St. Helier, Jersey’s capital. Like the airport, buses and taxis are available outside the arrivals hall although central St. Helier is only a short walk away. Scheduled ferries operate between the Channel Islands, England and France and for those with their own boat, Jersey Marinas offer a whole host of services for which they’ve earned ‘5 Gold Anchor’ status, an internationally recognised accolade. ports.je

Our Population

Our population was last estimated in 2019 at 107,800. Our last census was in 2011 and we hotly await the results of one taken last year. You’ll find most of us in and around St. Helier, leaving most of the northern, easterly and westerly parishes unspoilt and rural in nature. Roughly 50% of Jersey dwellers on the last census were locally born with 31% from the UK, 7% from Portugal/Madeira, 3% from Poland, 2% from Ireland and the rest from elsewhere.

Driving

If you get lost, it’s worth bearing in mind that most locals won’t know where the A6 or B12 roads are, because all of our roads bear their own names in addition to these classifications. Your best bet? Point on a map or tell someone where you’re trying to get to! If you’re renting a car you’ll notice that the registration plate bears a white ‘H’ on a red background which denotes it as a hired vehicle. You’d best not flag down one of these for directions as they’re probably lost too.

Like the United Kingdom, we drive on the left hand side of the road and all speed limits are posted in mph. The maximum permissable speed limit anywhere is 40mph, with a large number of 30mph and 20mph

zones. In the rural parishes you may also notice signs denoting ‘Green Lanes’ where the maximum speed limit is 15mph and right of way is given to those walking, cycling or riding horses.

You’re also likely to come across a local driving phenomenon known as filter in turn. As you approach one, priority is given to traffic on your right. After they’ve made their move it’s your turn and traffic on your left will yield to you. It’s a great way to keep traffic flowing and once you see it in action it’ll all make sense. The mini roundabout at the bottom of Beaumont Hill is a prime example. Don’t panic, you’ll be fine!

Parking

On-street parking requires the use of either a yellow disc or Paycard (available from convenience stores and hire car pick up points) to be displayed inside the car as signposted. PayByPhone parking is a cashless parking service that allows you to pay for parking using your mobile phone. It is available in all paying public car parks.

Search the Apple or Android app store for ‘PayByPhone’.

Parking on yellow lines is prohibited at all times. Multi-storey car parks also require Paycards with the exception of the Sand Street and underground Waterfront car parks which have ticket machines that accept both cash and cards as payment.

Taxis / Car Hire

There are taxi ranks at the airport, harbour and around St. Helier. Different tariffs apply depending on whether it’s day or night, as well as on public holidays and payment in cash used to be prefered although most now have card processors. Private hire cabs are also available to hire if you’re not near a taxi rank.

Cycling

Jersey is a cyclist’s paradise with miles and miles of winding green lanes and dramatic coastal routes. Check out a relaxing ebike route on page 94

Celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

On 6th February this year Her Majesty the Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, her other Realms, and the Commonwealth.

Jersey is a Crown Dependency, and by virtue is self-governing yet pledges allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen in her role as Duke of Normandy. Given the special relationship with The Queen, islanders are immersing themselves in this historic occasion, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The island will also enjoy a two-day public holiday to commemorate the Queen’s 70 years of service. To complement the national programme, several Jersey events are being organised, these include:

Liberation 77

May 9th marks an important day for islanders, it’s the day when the Channel Islands celebrate their liberation from the German Forces who occupied the islands during the Second World War.

For five long years, Jersey was heavily fortified with gun turrets, bunkers, and sea defences. The work was part of Hitler’s quest to build his Atlantic Wall and make the island an impregnable fortress. Many of these reminders remain and visitors can relive the chilling story of the Occupation by visiting one of the many bunkers, gun emplacements or underground tunnels located around the island.

LIBERATION 77 32

News of freedom first came through the words of Winston Churchill who said, ‘Our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today,’ followed by on May 9th, 1945, a speech by the then Bailiff of Jersey, to a large euphoric crowd in what is now Liberation Square.

The day is celebrated with a Bank Holiday and this year there will be the customary special sitting of the States of Jersey followed by a procession of States Members, The Bailiff of Jersey, Timothy Le Cocq, members of the clergy and Jurats, who will accompany the Royal Mace to Liberation Square. You will have a chance to view the ceremony on big screens in designated overflow areas in Weighbridge Place and in the Royal Square.

Other celebrations this year include a street party with music, dancing, and local food stalls in Weighbridge Place from 12.30.

Other celebrations this year include a street party with music, dancing, and local food stalls in Weighbridge Place from 12.30. You will see miles of decorative bunting throughout the Parishes. This year to celebrate Liberation Day, 77 years since Jersey was liberated from occupying forces, a special bunting has been designed to coincide with Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It will feature our Jersey Flag, as well as the Union Flag and the Liberation 77 logo. In addition, for this year only, the bunting will include the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee logo, issued for use by the Royal household.

The 75 logo was inspired by the account of Islander Enid de Gruchy, who was born in 1941. This year Enid’s granddaughter Emma Le Gallais has used her talent to redesign the logo to include a purple theme, the official colour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A little more local knowledge...

History

The earliest evidence of human activity in Jersey dates to about 250,000 years ago and it was only 6,000 years ago that Jersey was part of mainland Europe before rising tides cut us off and made us an island.

During the American Wars of Independence, two attempted invasions of the island were made. In 1779, the Prince of Orange William V was prevented from landing at St. Ouen’s Bay and on 06 January 1781 a force led by Baron de Rullecourt captured St. Helier in a daring dawn raid, but was defeated by a British

army led by Major Francis Peirson in the Battle of Jersey. Jersey was the fourth-largest ship building area in the 19th-century British Isles, building over 900 vessels around the island.

Jersey was occupied by Nazi German troops between 1940 and 1945, with the Channel Islands being the only British soil occupied during World War II. This period of occupation saw about 8,000 islanders evacuated, 1,200 islanders deported to camps in Germany, and over 300 islanders sentenced to the prisons and concentration camps of mainland Europe. Many islanders remained and

BE A LOCAL 34

the island was liberated by British troops on 09 May 1945, now celebrated as a public holiday locally.

People

Mostly a mix of Norman French and British settlers, Jersey’s community has also been enriched by the influences of the number of Europeans who also call Jersey their home. If you hear anybody referring to a Crapaud (French for toad) or a Jersey Bean they’ll be talking about one of the natives.

Language

The native language, which you’ll see displayed in a few locations around the island such as the airport and harbour is called Jèrriais but you’ll probably not hear it spoken unless you find yourself in the deepest, darkest of rural parishes such as St. Ouen, where 8% of parishioners speak it according to the results of a 2012 survey. English is the most widely spoken language.

Jersey and its neighbours Jersey has an interesting relationship with both the UK and Europe in that it’s a Crown Dependency, meaning that despite having our own independent government, locals answer to the Queen and the British military support our interests should the need arise. Despite being part of the British Isles, Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom. We’re also not part of the European Union but are a member of the EEC. Confused? You’ll fit right in! And to top it all off, things will no doubt become slightly more interesting as a result of Brexit.

Honorary Police

In addition to the States of Jersey Police force, who serve islandwide, each of Jersey’s twelve parishes has its own

police service that only have jurisdiction within the boundaries of their own parish, also known as the Honorary Police, who are headquartered at each of the parish halls.

Economy

The local economy thrives from a combination of offshore finance, tourism, digital and agriculture. Bathe at our beaches, enjoy our local attractions, dine on our fresh produce including world famous potatoes and dairy products from the herds of local Jersey cows.

Tides

Jersey’s tidal range is one of the largest in the world with a range of around 12 metres. We’ve also got some of the cleanest water in the British Isles, which is a winning combination when it comes to keeping our beaches great. It’s worth noting that because of the huge tidal range that the sea level does rise quickly and it’s easy to get caught out. FERN BROCKLESBY

We know each of you discover a unique path as you explore our island and we love to introduce you to people that live and work in Jersey and introduce you to the island through their eyes.

This edition we meet Fern, an equestrian with a love of horses, beach-life and cocktails!

my perfect weekend FIRST PERSON 36

What do you love about living in Jersey?

First of all, you can get anywhere on the island within half an hour and if you love the outdoors, our countryside and the beaches will be your paradise! You’ve got to have an open mind, it’s not the UK! Which is why I love it :) No motorways, you can avoid the morning traffic completely and there’s so many amazing opportunities right in front of you.

What does the weekend start with?

My favourite way to start the day, would be to get up and go for a sunrise hack with my horse Gulliver. We love exploring the north coast, cliff paths at Bouley Bay, green lanes in Trinity and also hacking to the beach. Anneport and St Catherine’s allow us to have a good gallop at low tide or Rozel for a dip at high tide. Whatever the weather, we will go out exploring! Then brunch or lunch somewhere out St. Ouen. If you can get in at El Tico for their breakfast pancakes or Colleen’s Café for their American breakfast- count yourself lucky!

And what about an afternoon activity?

On a summer’s day, I would 100% take anyone to the beach. Whether it’s to go paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming or just for a walk at any of our beautiful bays. There’s something for everyone. My favourites are definitely Archirondel and Bouley Bay - especially when Mad Mary’s cafe is open for her home made treats and hot chocolates. Roccos crazy golf is great fun for everyone too! Be prepared for the wind, it’s very exposed when you’re out west. Even when you don’t think it will be, it is!

An evening would end perfectly...

Dinner at wildfire then an evening on the terrace at the Grand Jersey or outside at the Royal Yacht for some lovely cocktails as the sun sets, is always a brilliant way to end the day if you want to get dressed up and go “out out”. But for a more chilled vibe, a Chinese takeaway on the beach with tunes and an evening swim would suit me just as much:) Jersey is such a diverse island, we are very lucky to live here and have so many beautiful areas to explore, it’s hard to choose just one.

What would be your best Sunday?

When I’m not working as a mammal keeper at Jersey Zoo, I fit in as much as possible on my days off! Sunday’s are usually competition days for Gulliver and I,  whether it’s dressage with the Jersey Dressage club, jumping or showing at Home Farm, it takes a lot of preparation. Otherwise there are horse races during the year at Les Landes Racecourse, which I enjoy supporting and is a lovely family day out too.

If it’s a long weekend, what’s not to miss?

Definitely Jersey Zoo! I know it may seem that I’m being bias. However you won’t only be supporting the work we do around the world and within the zoo, but it’s also such a peaceful place to go for a walk and enjoy a coffee - one of the best places on island;)  If I get any spare time after all of the above, going on a RIB trip with Jersey Seafaris is high on my list. It’s another amazing way to see more incredible views of our island, while having the thrill of being on a rib and the potential opportunity to see Dolphins. What more could you ask for?

Meet Fern and her mammal friends at Jersey Zoo.

ECO-CONSCIOUS ISLAND EXPERIENCES.

Here in Jersey, we’re constantly looking to develop the ways that we can live sustainably and in harmony with our island environment. We’ve gone so far as to set an ambition to be a carbon neutral island by the year 2030. To help preserve the natural beauty of not only our natural landscapes and wildlife, but the wider world we live in. Here are the top ways that eco-conscious travellers can enjoy an island escape whilst leaving their holiday footprint a little lighter.

Self-Propelled Power

While exploring the island, why not keep tabs on the emissions that you avoid by logging onto the EVie app and hiring a dockless ebike. With over 140 electric bikes available on a pay-as-you-go tariff, once you finish your rental you will be informed exactly how much CO2 you saved per journey! If you really require four wheels over two, EVie also have electric cars and vans available, but be sure to register and book in advance.

64 WHAT’S ON

Stay Sustainable

If you’re looking to stay somewhere that really takes their environmental responsibility personally, the Seymour Group have been recognised with the Jersey Hospitality Association’s ‘Green Award’ due to their commitment to environmentally friendly practices, including utilising local produce and resources. For luxury with a conscience, Longueville Manor’s ‘New Leaf’ sustainability programme is dedicated to protecting the surrounding environment and developing sustainable practices such as their ‘Garbage Guzzler’ refuse solution.

A Refreshing Exchange

Our beaches are famously beautiful, but we all know the strain our oceans are under from plastics and other disposables. That’s why, in Jersey you can exchange a filled bucket of plastic and rubbish, for a satisfying free hot drink as a reward for your efforts at a number of beach outlets. What tastes better than doing a good deed? You can sip on something rewarding at Rhona’s in the quaint village of Gorey or Kismet Cabana tucked away in the idyllic bay of Ouaisné.

Eat and Drink Responsibly

What is a holiday without a little tipple or two? If you want to sample a local cocktail with a responsible rum or a guilt-free gin, be sure to take a trip to the Channel Island Liquor Company. Their local distillery located in a converted sail loft overlooking the old harbour, produces unique premium hand-crafted gin and rum, distilled in very small batches. They don’t use any plastic around the top of their bottles, and they invest part of their profits into beach cleaning initiatives.

If your bevvy of choice is something a bit more hoppy, then why not try our local ‘Stinky Bay Brewery’? A firm favourite with locals, they do their best to make sure nothing goes to waste. Once they are done with the grain it goes to the local dairy farm for our famed Jersey cows to enjoy and their hops get taken to be used as fertilizer to grow delicious veggies!

Do It Yourself

If you’re staying in one of our unique self-catering locations during your stay, fuel up on some sustainable sustenance. Get the Scoop at The Sustainable Cooperative, who are committed to creating a more sustainable supply of food on the island and providing waste-free, packaging-free, organic produce.

Get a taste for something local. What’s more authentic than shopping at a farm where local produce was grown or reared? In Jersey, the field to fork journey is far shorter and you can even pick up a real taste of the island at local farm run roadside stalls where you leave payment in an honesty box.. If you fancy a taste of the sea, savour the catch of the day from local fisherman. Grab yourself a lobster, crab, hand dived scallops or our famed oysters caught that very morning at one of the ‘pop up’ locations around the island.

You Are What You Eat

Don’t fancy cooking? If you’re looking for somewhere to dine out that doesn’t ‘cost the earth’, The Watersplash is an accredited member of Plastic Free Jersey and has been proactive in establishing a public engagement programme encouraging waste collection through their ‘2 minute beach clean’ programme.

For sustainably sourced seafood, local fisherman Josh at The Jersey Catch supplies both Drifters and Ocean at the Atlantic Hotel with fresh scallops, dived for that very morning.

Green Attractions

The Jersey National Park aims to protect, conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage within its 2,145 designated hectares so that it can be appreciated and enjoyed by all who spend time in it, now and in the future.

A number of local activity providers have been celebrated by being awarded the Green Tourism Gold Standard for their eco and green tourism in Jersey. These businesses include; La Mare Wine Estate, Valley Adventure Centre, Jersey Heritage sites, Hamptonne, La

Hougue Bie and Jersey Kayak Adventures together with sister company Jersey Walk Adventures.

If you’re looking for a way to spend your day which is dedicated to helping protect our beautiful island surroundings with an interactive adventure into our natural environment, these are not to be missed.

Support the Cause

The conservation charity, Durrell headquartered at the world-renowned Jersey Zoo, is one of only three organisations in Jersey to achieve the Gold standard in the UK’s leading sustainable tourism certification scheme. Jersey Zoo began as the first ever conservation-themed zoo. 60 years later, Gerald Durrell’s animal haven is the natural place to discover some of the world’s most incredible creatures.

Smaller Footprints.

Exploring Jersey’s waters comes with the added bonus of knowing that on island providers are as passionate about sharing Jersey’s great outdoors as they are about protecting it. Jersey Kayak and Walk Adventures are constantly working to reduce their carbon footprint. They have already reduced their footprint by almost 50% and encourage customers to use greener transport alternatives to reach the beach by offering a discount to those who arrive by bus, bicycle, or foot. Discover Jersey’s precious offshore reefs with Jersey Seafaris on an archipelago adventure. The best bit? Every litre of fuel used on their boats is offset towards Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Rewild Carbon project which is investing in precious ecosystems and the many animals and communities that flourish there.

Catherine Best

St. Peter’s Windmill, home to award winning jewellery designer Catherine Best, was the last surviving working tower mill in Jersey.

This beautiful historic landmark dates back to 1837 and is built from Jersey granite. The weighbridge and millers office where grain used to be delivered to the Windmill for milling also survived and has become a handy site for buses to stop. The Windmill is part of a complex that includes a jewellery manufacturing workshop, the Catherine Best jewellery showroom. It is set in rural Jersey and has tranquil, manicured gardens where visitors can relax with a drink and something to eat, whilst taking in the surroundings from which Catherine draws her inspiration.

This is Grosnez Castle in St. Ouen, but you can call it ‘grow-nay castle’ (oh, and it’s in ‘saint one’)

Decoding the dialect

A local advises...

Whilst English is the most widely spoken language here in Jersey, if you find yourself interacting with some of the purest of locals you might notice a distinctive intonation that’s likely a remnant of our Norman roots despite sounding closer to a South African twang.

They’re hard to find these days but they’re definitely out there, mostly hidden away in the rural parishes. I should know, I’m descended from them and occasionally find myself pronouncing an ‘arn’ sound as ‘on’ in a way that’d likely disgust the Queen. The example sentence above sums this up

relatively succinctly. If you find yourself talking to somebody who pronounces words like this there’s a good chance they’ll be able to give you reliable directions. Just make sure you’re pronouncing the place names properly. To give you a head start we’ve listed a few on the page to the right.

BEACHLIFE

No matter how you spend your time on Jersey, you’ll no doubt want to feel either the sand between your toes or breathe in the fresh sea air as you explore our beaches and coves. They each have their own unique personality. Choose the one that’s right for you...

Anne Port NE

A quiet and rarely crowded east-facing stretch of sand that catches the morning and midday sun. 2

Bouley Bay N

A winding hill leads down to this steep pebble beach with deep water for competent swimmers. The bay is home to one of Jersey’s scuba-diving schools. 4

Archirondel NE

This popular beach with an excellent beach cafe is pebbly at first but sandy at low tide when the water stays shallow for some way out. East-facing, Archirondel loses the sun in the late afternoon. 2

Green Island SE

A locals’ favourite, this sheltered south-facing beach is a real sun trap where soft sand, rock climbing and rock pool adventures await. The tide goes out a long way, so take care with the swift incoming tide and pick times close to high water to enjoy swimming or paddling. 1

BEACH GUIDE
86

Grève de Lecq NW

The most popular of the north coast beaches, Grève de Lecq’s sheltered sands and rockpools are ideal for families but lose the sun in late afternoon. Don’t miss the excellent cafes and local pubs close by. 9

A real suntrap on the south coast, once you’ve trekked down the steep path from the car park and crossed the pebbles, you’ll reach a sheltered south-facing beach with golden sand and shallow turquoise water, ideal for swimming. 12a, 14 to St. Brelade’s Bay, then walk along the cliffs

Grouville Bay / La Rocque Harbour SE

A long stretch of sand that leads to Gorey harbour, with Mont Orgueil Castle as a backdrop. Plenty of parking, beach cafes and kiosks as well as a childrens’ beachside playground and soft sand make Long Beach a local favourite. 9 ,1a, 2

BEACH GUIDE
Beauport SW Bonne Nuit N A tiny fishing harbour with space to play on the sand, picnic or catch some sun, but not ideal for swimming. Worth visiting for the excellent beach cafe. 4
87

Ouaisné Bay SW

This south west facing beach is the wilder contrast to the adjoining St. Brelade’s Bay. The beaches are connected at low tide, or cross the pine-rich headland and walk along the sea wall next to the protected Ouaisné Common towards locals’ favourite, The Smugglers Inn. 12a

Rozel Bay NE

A small fishing village lined with beach huts and harbourside cottages, Rozel is more of a fishing harbour than a place to swim. But at low tide, Rozel’s small stretch of white sand is safe for children to play on, just look out for the Rozel geese! 3

Havre des Pas S

Close to the centre of St. Helier, this sandy beach is worth a visit to see the architecture of the art deco pool, filled by the tide each day. The beach is easy to access, and safe for swimmers. 1

St. Aubin’s Bay SW

A crescent of south-facing sand from St. Helier to St. Aubin, the beach is in full sun for most of the day. With several beach cafes along the promenade front, look out for the softest sand around the Gunsite Café with jet ski hire close by. 12a, 14, 15

BEACH GUIDE
88

Plémont NW

A pristine sandy cove reachable by a long flight of steps, where the intrepid are rewarded with a stunning natural playground of rock pools, sea caves and an excellent beach café perched on the cliffs. There’s safe swimming when the sea is calm, and surfing when its wilder, and the beach is completely covered at high tide.

St. Brelade’s Bay SW

The beautiful beach at St. Brelade’s Bay is one of the island’s busiest; a visitor favourite for its soft sand, safe swimming, beach activities and seaside eating. Voted as number three in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards, this stunning south-facing beach is in the sun for most of the day. 12a, 14

Portelet Bay SW

Climb down the long flight of steps and you’ll be rewarded with a sunny, sheltered and sandy beach circling Janvrin’s Tomb at the centre. Portelet Bay Beach Café serves excellent pizza throughout the season, and the pub at the top of the steps, the Old Portelet Inn is a family favourite. 12a

St. Ouen’s Bay W

A magnificent beach and natural playground for surfers and adrenaline seekers. It’s where one of the oldest surfing clubs in Europe has its home and makes a stunning setting for beach walks. Swimmers should take care in the strong currents and stick to the flagged zones. The beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the season. 22

A pedal/power route.

Take an ebike or one of our EVie bikes for a whirl.

If you fancy a ride around the island at a leisurely pace, there are several providers that will hire you an electric bike. Alternatively, you can use our EVie bikes; just download the EVie app, reserve your bike then pick it up from various locations around the island, including centrally in St. Helier, just opposite the Liberation Bus Station.

Hit the road heading west in search of La Corbière Lighthouse. On your way you’ll pass Elizabeth Castle, you can’t miss it, it’s the one out at sea – quite the architectural feat! You can’t cycle across the causeway, but if you did want to visit, you can park your bike up and pop into the castle kiosk to find out how. Alternatively enjoy the spectacular castle view as you cycle along the promenade that’ll lead you all the way into St. Aubin’s Village.

Once you’ve arrived in St. Aubin’s Village, you’ll discover lots of eateries, some shops, a gallery, and a raft of resident ducks. Stay a while and soak up the bustling harbour vibe – or continue on your way and join the cycle path, an old railway track, which is your one stop path all the way to the lighthouse.

4. Plémont Bay waterfall

Descend onto this north coast beach at low water and you’ll discover not only a truly beautiful golden sandy bay, but also ‘THE’ waterfall located in a naturally formed saltwater cave! It’s mesmerising watching the freshwater trickle down the smooth stones, washed twice daily by the incoming tide. It’s quite the climb back up, but you can choose to reward yourself in the café at the top, which is open for most of the year.

1. La Corbière Lighthouse

This nautical feat at the south westerly point of Jersey has been guarding this treacherous stretch of coast for centuries. The name means ‘a place where crows gather’, quite fitting really, as this is definitely a place where people come to gather, to watch the rise and fall of the tide, and enjoy a low water walk out to the base of the lighthouse. Park up and enjoy spending some time exploring here, or breeze pass and watch the towering white lighthouse disappear as you continue along the coastline.

2. Pit stop at La Corbière Phare

Prop up your EVie bike along side the other bikes, that are frequently seen at this popular refuelling station. For a total sugar rush, turbo charged, opt for the Hot Chocolate with whipped cream.

3. Grosnez

Cycling from one side of St. Ouen’s Bay to the other you’ll leave behind the nautical landmark of La Corbière and climb the steep hill of L’Etacq to beautiful views across St. Ouen’s Bay and the green lane that’ll lead you to Grosnez Castle. A spectacular ruin with enviable 360-degree views.

5. Faulkner Fisheries

A bunker that functions as a vivier. Before you finish your day, why not drop back down into St. Ouen’s Bay to pick up some fresh seafood to cook up at dinner. This striking whitewashed building situated on the most north westerly point of St. Ouen’s Bay operates as a fishery, housing the catch of the day from the many local fisherman that supply the family run business. In the summer months, there’s a chance you’ll smell it before you see it, as you cycle towards the scent of garlic drenched seafood sizzling on the BBQ, open to the public in the warmer months of the year. Any other time of year you can buy seafood here and prep your very own seafood banquet – fill your basket up with your very own local catch up the day!

The Hideout, St. Ouen’s Bay

At the South end of the bay, this little cafe is perched on the slip at La Pulente with a strong following for tasty wraps and rolls with some sweet potato fries. Service is usually brisk and food served with a smile. There’s also a great view of the bay from the benches at the side of the café down the slip.

El Tico Beach Cantina, St. Ouen's Bay

Feed your appetite at Jersey’s original beach café, perched on the very edge of St. Ouen’s Beach, in the middle of one of the finest surf bays in Europe. El Tico Beach Cantina serves up fabulous food, great wine and glorious beachside sunsets. Big tables and benches create a chilled friendly vibe.

Sands, St. Ouen's Bay

In the centre of the bay, Sands has been a mainstay of Jersey culture for decades, albeit with an interlude as ‘Big Verns’ for a time. Their pancakes are fantastic and Joe and his team are hospitable and can teach you to surf and remove the calories you’ll have added with your beachside brunch.

On an island that is only nine miles by five, it always astounds me just how many incredible dining options we have, whatever the time of day. Here are just a handful of places to see you through breakfast, lunch and dinner during your visit this season.

BREAKFAST

Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day but also my favourite. Which means that I feel pretty confident I know of some of the best spots for breakfast, or brunching, on our little isle. Starting in St. Helier, there’s been quite the explosion of excellent brunch spots of late, Locke’s being just one of them. Here you’ll find excellent coffee and a small but mighty menu with dishes inspired by, and changing with, the seasons. They’re also quite the purveyor of excellently titled dishes too, Avo Good Day and the Notorious BLT being just two of their permanent fixtures.

Dandy have not one but two locations serving AllPress coffee and delectable food. Their chef bakes a plethora of tasty treats every day, including his own sourdough which you can have topped with almost

anything. Be sure to grab a slab of their banana bread (toasted and buttered!) or a brownie and if you head to their Colomberie location on a Saturday ask for the Dirty Eggs, you won’t be disappointed! The only downside to the townie locations is they don’t open on Sundays, but this gives you the perfect excuse to hunt for a table with a view. Why not head over to Grève de Lecq, here you’ll find a multitude of places where you can enjoy food for most of the day, but my favourite has to be Colleen’s Café for their full English, delightful. It wouldn’t be a trip to the island without a visit to the Hungry Man in Rozel Bay, this brightly coloured beach hut is the perfect spot for an al fresco bacon butty or if you’re brave try the Double Decker Healthwrecker.

LUNCH

If you’re heading to St. Ouen’s Bay then a drive along the Five Mile Road offers up three options; Le Braye, El Tico or Sands all have excellent views of the bay and great menus full of foodie delights. They serve food throughout the day too so why stop at just lunch! Nude Food Beach has an excellent menu of wholesome food and fantastic views of St. Aubin’s Bay, open for breakfast and lunch daily and dinner too Wednesday - Saturday. One more westie must-visit is Off the Rails on the cycle track to La Corbière, serving Wednesday to Sunday with an excellent tapas and pizza menu with a strong wine list.

DINNER

Your choices for dinner are almost endless. Head out east to Gorey where amongst the countless dining options you’ll find Sumas and their all-weather balcony which offers you sweeping vistas of the castle and superb food. St. Aubin has an abundance of restaurants too, many of them along the Bulwarks overlooking the boats in the harbour. The Anchor Club offers up slightly more formal dining and the Seafish Café, where you can enjoy excellent fish and chips right beside the water.

St. Helier is home to several fantastic fine dining restaurants. Try Samphire, where you’ll find a menu full of island influences and the best Côte de Beouf you’re likely to try, ever (in my opinion). Or head to Bohemia where I dare you to choose their sixcourse Michelin-starred surprise dinner menu, which changes daily and is available Monday to Thursday, it promises to tantalise your taste buds and delight your senses.

Another favourite has to be No. 10 Restaurant, squirreled away on Bond Street which has a menu that is full of local ingredients and dishes that are influenced by the chef’s travels. The restaurant’s chef was a finalist on The Great British Menu. All three of these town-based restaurants also have excellent bars should you wish to have an aperitif before you dine.

Shake up your nights.

In recent years Jersey nightlife has changed, from the preeminent larger venues that characterised pre-lockdown ‘big’ nights out to a wider selection of more intimate venues that fill fast and pour more slowly. These speak-easy inspired bars provide a perfect, characterful evening if you’re looking for something a bit more than a pub crawl.

The Weighbridge is a good place to start. The dominant Royal Yacht Hotel has a variety of different drinking options available, whether it be outside sipping wine in their large al fresco area, squirrelled away in the Cabin bar (the last remaining part of the original historic building) or dancing the night away in their ‘Drift’ bar, there is something for everyone. Just over the road, The Square offers excellent food options and you can also drink there until 01:00am. Across the cobbles of the Weighbridge, Ce Soir offers cocktails, table service and an in-house DJ with a more club-style atmosphere and upstairs gin bar. In the summer their alfresco area is good for people watching. Just up the road from the Weighbridge square on Hill Street is the expansive Chambers, which underwent a mulimillion pound refurb in 2019 and offers live music; a fusion of pub culture and bar atmosphere.

If you fancy your nightlife a little more intimate. Tucked away behind Chambers is The Blind Pig, hidden down a back alley just around the corner (you can also get there through a little hidden door at the back of Chambers itself). One of our original speak-easy bars, it specialises in cocktails in a small but beautifully appointed room. Just a few turns away on Wharf Street, this year sees the addition of The Porter’s Store, which channels a 70s Americana vibe into its cocktail den.

Just one more right turn, on Broad Street, you’ll find Vinifera, worth investigating for an early evening glass of wine from one of the island’s most experienced owner-sommeliers. They also offer a private table in the basement, bookable for groups to take wine with delicious food.

If it’s wine time, you should carry on across town where you’ll find the newly opened The Watchmaker, a chic ‘wine, Champagne and charcutie’ bar. A stone’s throw away down a cobbled backalley is the clandestine Project 52, Once you’ve found the location you need to look for the buzzer and ring for entry. Open 17:00 - 23:00 from Wednesday to Saturday you can expect excellently blended cocktails, craft beers and a superb selection of gins and a nifty wine list too for a cosy affair of an evening.

If you’re looking for some pre-dinner drinks, the roof terrace at The Don is a sophisticated beauty above one of Jersey’s quality restaurants, Samphire. The roof garden provides the perfect oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the high street, where guests can sit and enjoy a drink when the weather is fine and enjoy wine by the glass, or one of their excellent seasonally changing cocktails. If you like the vibe of a premium hotel bar then don’t miss the cool calm of the Bohemia Bar and Roof Terrace at The Club Hotel and Spa on Green Street. The timeless elegance of the bar is matched by a cool calm, great drinks and the chance to be on-hand for dinner at our fabulous Michelin-starred restaurant.

The GST Refund Scheme

Would you like to save even more on your jewellery and watch purchases while you’re in Jersey? Jeff Chinn from Hettich Jewellers explains how the GST Visitor Refund Scheme could benefit your visit, with a refund of Jersey’s 5% Goods and Services Tax in addition to Jersey’s VATfree prices.

If you want to take advantage of the GST refund scheme, which is available to visitors leaving the island by scheduled flights or ferries, and spending a total of £300 or more, then ensure you are buying from a participating retailer.

It's not compulsory for retailers to opt in, so ask before you buy. Once purchasing from a participating retailer, the process is simple. Fill out a simple form in store, have it stamped at the airport or ferry port when you leave, and send the form back to the retailer for a refund, less a small administration fee.

To find out if you are eligible, visit Hettich or look on the Jersey www.gov.je website.

THE PROCESS

YOU MUST GIVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO THE RETAILER:

> Your passport or a form of identification

> Details of your arrival and departure flights and dates

> Your name and address

HOW TO CLAIM A REFUND

Once you are back in your country of residence, and within two months of your departure date from Jersey, you should return the retailer's copy of the stamped form to the retailer.

After receiving your form, the retailer must process your refund within three months of your departure date.

The retailer may charge an administration fee to process your form, but they should tell you this when you buy your goods.

ORIENTATION

If you’re in St. Helier, it feels like you’re in the middle of the island. In fact, you’re a litte bit to the east. Considering you’re on an island nine miles by five, you’re not too far from anywhere though! Whether you choose to head to the southern fishing villages; St. Aubin in the west or Gorey/Rozel in the east, the western beaches or the northern cliffs, the island is as diverse as it is beautiful so try and take in a little bit of every corner.
