To my island.

Jersey has always been a great place to live for me, offering a range of activities that I enjoy daily. Surfing, eating out, and cycling are all unique ways to enjoy this charming island.

Surfing along Jersey’s coastline is the best way for me to spend a day in the ocean. The range of waves can be vast, offering varied conditions so that no two days are the same when paddling out. If you haven’t tried surfing before, I would recommend heading down to have a chat with Jake at the Jersey Surf School, who will ensure you have a brilliant time!

Eating out here is great; we are lucky enough to have the choice of numerous amazing restaurants. Whether it’s a casual meal by the beach or a cosy restaurant, the food scene here is top-notch. Some of my favourites are enjoying a fresh seafood BBQ at Faulkner Fisheries or the amazing flavours at Joe’s new restaurant, Pêtchi by Liberty Wharf.

Cycling through Jersey’s scenic landscapes is a great escape. The rolling hills and coastal paths are a tranquil way to spend the day. For adventurers, I highly recommend trying the guided e-bike tours at Lakeys Bike Hire. These tours have gained immense popularity, and it’s no wonder why. Riding their electric bikes is a breeze, and the experienced guides introduce you to hidden gems.

For an ideal day in Jersey, I suggest starting with a surf session to wake you up, then hopping on one of Lakey’s e-bikes to explore. It’s a splendid way to discover Jersey while enjoying the fresh air and scenic views. I would finish the day with a cold drink and great food while watching the sunset over St. Ouens at El Tico.

I feel Jersey has something for everybody to enjoy, and with the rising popularity of e-bikes, exploring the island’s wonders has become even more exciting and accessible for everyone.

THINGS TO KNOW WHILE YOU’RE HERE

You’re on our beautiful little island in the English Channel but you’re a lot closer to France (around 14 miles at the closest point) than you are to England (closer to 100 miles). You’re surrounded by four other main Channel Islands; Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm and a handful of smaller inhabited and uninhabited islands. Our nearest coastal towns in France are Granville and the historic port of Saint-Malo. The term “Channel Islands” began to be used around 1830, possibly first by the Royal Navy as a collective name for the islands.

Vous êtes sur notre belle petite île de la Manche mais vous êtes beaucoup plus proche de la France (environ 22 km au plus près) que de l'Angleterre (plus près de 100 km). Vous êtes entouré de quatre autres îles anglo-normandes principales ; Guernesey, Alderney, Sark et Herm et une poignée de petites îles habitées et inhabitées. Money

Pounds Sterling is the legal tender but we also have our own banknotes and coins which are classed as accepted tender elsewhere in the UK, people can take it, but they don’t have to - so don’t forget to spend your last few pound notes on souvenirs before you leave. If you forget though, a pound note also makes a great souvenir. Also, if you hold one of our bank notes up to the light you’ll not see a British king or queen in the hologram but the image of one of our own royalty.

Our Population

Since the last census in 2011 it’s estimated that our population has grown to around 105,500. You’ll find most of us in and around St. Helier leaving most of the northern, easterly and westerly parishes unspoilt and rural in nature. Roughly 50% of Jersey dwellers on the last census were locally born with 31% from the UK, 7% from Portugal/Madeira, 3% from Poland, 2% from Ireland and the rest from elsewhere.

Arriving and leaving

If you arrive by air you’ll be one of a historical average of 1.6 million passengers per year to use Jersey Airport in the west of the island. Served by buses and taxis for onward travel right outside the arrivals hall, hire car services are also available inside the arrivals hall. Foreign exchange and postal services, including posting excess baggage are available in the departures hall.

If you’re wearing your sea legs, you’ll have arrived in St. Helier, Jersey’s capital. Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall although central St. Helier is only a short walk away. Scheduled ferries operate between the Channel Islands, England and France and for those with their own boat Jersey Marinas offer a whole host of services for which they’ve earned ‘5 Gold Anchor’ status, an internationally recognised accolade.

Arriver et partir

Driving

If you get lost, it’s worth bearing in mind that most locals won’t know where the A6 or B12 roads are, because all of our roads bear their own names in addition to these classifications. Your best bet? Point on a map or tell someone where you’re trying to get to! If you’re renting a car you’ll notice that the registration plate bears a white ‘H’ on a red background which denotes it as a hired vehicle. You’d best not flag down one of these for directions as they’re probably lost too. Like the United Kingdom, we drive on the left hand side of the road and all speed limits are posted in mph. The maximum permissable speed limit anywhere

is 40mph, with a large number of 30mph and 20mph zones. In the rural parishes you may also notice signs denoting ‘Green Lanes’ where the maximum speed limit is 15mph and right of way is given to those walking, cycling or riding horses. You’re also likely to come across a local driving phenomenon known as filter in turn. As you approach one, priority is given to traffic on your right. After they’ve made their move it’s your turn and traffic on your left will yield to you. It’s a great way to keep traffic flowing and once you see it in action it’ll all make sense. The mini roundabout at the bottom of Beaumont Hill is a prime example. Don’t panic, you’ll be fine!

Driving - continued

Conduite

Si vous vous perdez, sachez que la plupart des habitants ne sauront pas où se trouvent les routes A6 ou B12, car toutes nos routes portent leur propre nom en plus de ces classifications. Votre meilleur pari ? Pointez sur une carte ou dites à quelqu’un où vous essayez de vous rendre ! Si vous louez une voiture, vous remarquerez que la plaque d’immatriculation porte un « H » blanc sur fond rouge qui indique qu’il s’agit d’un véhicule de location. Vous feriez mieux de ne pas signaler l’un d’entre eux pour les directions car ils sont probablement perdus aussi. Comme au Royaume-Uni, nous conduisons sur le côté gauche de la route et toutes les limites de vitesse sont affichées en mph. La limite de vitesse maximale autorisée n’importe où est de 40 mph, avec un grand nombre de 30 mph et 20 mph zones. Dans les paroisses rurales, vous remarquerez peut-être également des panneaux indiquant les «voies vertes» où la limite de vitesse maximale est de 15 mph et le droit de passage est donné à ceux qui marchent, font du vélo ou montent à cheval.

Fahren

In ländlichen Gemeinden finden Sie Schilder mit der Aufschrift „Green Lanes“. Hier beträgt die Höchstgeschwindigkeit 15 mph und Fußgänger, Radfahrer oder Reiter haben Vorrang. Sie werden wahrscheinlich auch auf eine lokale Besonderheit stoßen, das Straßenschild „Filter in Turn“. Kommen Sie an eine solche Kreuzung, hat zunächst ein von rechts kommendes Fahrzeug Vorrang. Parking

On street parking requires the use of either a yellow disc or Paycard (available from convenience stores and hire car pick up points) to be displayed inside the car as signposted. PayByPhone parking is a cashless parking service that allows you to pay for parking using your mobile phone. It is available in all paying public car parks.

Multi-storey car parks also require Paycards with the exception of the Sand Street and underground Waterfront car parks which have ticket machines that accept both cash and cards as payment.

Public Buses

Buses operate throughout the island to and from Liberation Station in St. Helier. Listed beaches, landmarks and attractions have the route number in their listing. All buses are low floor, so they are all fully accessible for wheelchair users, pushchairs, prams and some smaller mobility scooters (with a permit). Low-floor buses also help those who have other mobility requirements. All our buses have easy-access ramps and a dedicated wheelchair space.

Autobus

Des bus circulent dans toute l'île depuis et vers la gare de Libération à St Helier. Les plages, monuments et attractions répertoriés ont le numéro d'itinéraire dans leur liste. Tous les bus sont à plancher surbaissé, ils sont donc entièrement accessibles aux utilisateurs de fauteuils roulants, poussettes, landaus et certains scooters de mobilité plus petits (avec permis). Les bus à plancher surbaissé aident également ceux qui ont d'autres besoins de mobilité. Tous nos bus disposent de rampes d'accès faciles et d'un espace réservé aux fauteuils roulants.

Busse

Von der Liberation Station in St. Helier verkehren Busse zu allen Teilen der Insel. Für Strände, Sehenswürdigkeiten und Attraktionen findet man die Routennummer in einer entsprechenden Auflistung. Alle Busse sind niederflurig und daher für Rollstuhlfahrer, Kinderwagen, kleinere Mobilitätsroller (mit Genehmigung) und andere Mobilitätsanforderungen geeignet. Taxis / Car hire

There are taxi ranks at the airport, harbour and around St. Helier. Different tariffs apply depending on time of day and day of the week. Payment in cash used to be preferred, but all taxis are now required to accept cards. Private hire cabs are also available to hire if you’re not near a taxi rank. Evie electric cars can be unlocked and hired with the Evie app.

Il y a des stations de taxis à l’aéroport, au port et autour de St Helier. Des tarifs différents s’appliquent selon l’heure de la journée et le jour de la semaine. Autrefois, le paiement en espèces était préféré, mais tous les taxis sont désormais tenus d’accepter les cartes. Des taxis privés sont également disponibles à la location si vous n’êtes pas à proximité d’une station de taxis. Les voitures électriques Evie peuvent être déverrouillées et louées avec l’application Evie.

Get to the beach!

Beachability is a charity providing specially designed manual, ballooned wheel chairs for use on the beach and other rough terrain. Beachability chairs are available for anyone that needs help with their mobility at no cost and can be booked out for up to three hours. Users should be able to transfer onto the chair and should be accompanied by a helper. A hoist is also available for those who are not able to transfer.

Walking.

Jersey’s cliff-edged heights and wide sandy bays are best seen on foot, with a breeze to keep you cool. Walking is a great way to explore the outdoors allowing us to wander through Jersey’s spectacular landscapes, enjoying this Aspiring Geopark’s natural and built heritage.

Cycling.

Explore the Aspiring Jersey Island Geopark on two wheels, with a network of 15 mph ‘Green Lanes’ through the island’s countryside and miles of bicycle-friendly routes, a cycle ride is the perfect way to explore our unique island. Enjoy taking in the sights from the slow lane or challenge yourself with an uphill climb. We may be small, but we pack many diverse, beautiful and challenging cycle routes into our nine miles by five. You’ll be spoilt for choice for bike hire in Jersey, you’ll find mountain, leisure and road bikes and e-bikes if you’re looking for a little assistance. See an example ride on page 96

Diving and Snorkelling.

The sun warms the sea all summer long. The average water temperature is 15 – 20°C during the summer months (April to October). Jersey’s shallow marine habitats offer an opportunity to explore the beauty and diversity that lies beneath the waves through the creation of snorkel trails at Portelet Bay and Bouley Bay. Portelet Bay boasts an element of isolation from the island, forming its own little oasis. A small islet located in the middle of the bay, Janvrin’s Tomb (or Île au Guerdain), is surrounded by water at high tide. Bouley Bay has long been the spiritual home of diving on the island and the trail there showcasing a range of habitats as well as a reef of kelp and seaweed stretching across the bay alongside a sandy seabed.

The Jersey sub species of buff-tailed bumblebee, despite the name, does not have a buff tail. It is also known as the Jersey white-tailed bumblebee. This bumblebee is a native pollinator to Jersey and can have active nests over winter. They nest underground often using small mammal holes with up to 500 workers in a nest. They can be found all over the Island, from gardens to sites of scientific interest.

Catherine Best

St. Peter’s Windmill, home to award winning jewellery designer Catherine Best, was the last surviving working tower mill in Jersey.

This beautiful historic landmark dates back to 1837 and is built from Jersey granite. The weighbridge and millers office where grain used to be delivered to the Windmill for milling also survived and has become a handy site for buses to stop. The Windmill is part of a complex that includes a jewellery manufacturing workshop, the Catherine Best jewellery showroom. It is set in rural Jersey and has tranquil, manicured gardens where visitors can relax with a drink and something to eat, whilst taking in the surroundings from which Catherine draws her inspiration.

Channel Islands Military Museum

The Museum is housed in a German bunker which sits right on the sea wall that dominates the surrounding area, which once formed part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall defences. Within the bunker itself are many rooms full of artefacts both military and civilian which help tell the story of the five long years of German Occupation. There are hundreds of interesting pieces to look at as well as lots to read. There is also a 40 minute commentary of locals recounting experiences of the time.

I have always enjoyed meeting people and sharing the history of St. Helier Harbour in a relaxed manner with both visitors and local residents is a pleasurable experience.

Top Jersey facts that not even our Islanders might know? When we get to the English and French harbours, the history is so extensive that even the partially interested can’t avoid becoming enthralled!

If you could take guests to just one area of St. Helier Harbour, where would it be?

Standing in a group on the slipway in front of The Old Lifeboat Shed, one cannot help appreciating that history is all around us! We have the Victoria Pier to our left, named by Queen Victoria in 1846 , Elizabeth Castle and its Breakwater can be seen between the Pierheads and beyond that Noirmont Point. So much to take in and talk about!

When you aren’t guiding others around St. Helier Harbour, where do you like to take yourself?

I’ve always had a fascination with Beauport, a small bay to the west of St. Brelade’s Bay. Either anchored within it, swimming from the deeply shelving beach, or sitting on a bench above it, it’s an area of tranquillity where one can put other thoughts aside and simply relax.

What is one thing that you think everyone who visits Jersey should experience?

No visit, however short, should be without becoming familiar with the Island’s relationship with the Crown and the fact that Jersey is one of three Crown Protectorates, the others being Guernsey and the Isle of Man. If time exists, a brief explanation of the Parish system is both interesting and easily understood.

You’re a former Harbour Master of Jersey – how does this differ from being say a UK Harbour Master?

Unlike the UK Harbour Master, the Jersey Harbour Master has responsibility for all that takes places within the Island’s threemile limit. This includes acting as Coast Guard – controlling shipping of all types within it and reacting promptly to maritime incidents and also responding to any oil pollution threats. These responsibilities require both experienced and trained staff. Fortunately, fishing is regulated separately!

What’s the best piece of local marine folklore?

The true story of Louisa Journeaux who got swept out to sea in April 1886 – join my Walk and I’ll recount it!

Jersey is a great place to get out on a bike.

Cycling is the perfect way to enjoy the best of Jersey’s countryside, especially at this time of year. 48 miles of daffodil-lined Green Lanes trail past lush green fields where the famous Jersey Cows graze with their calves and trees are bursting into life after the winter forming green leafy tunnels to cruise through.

There are a number of signposted cycle routes of varying lengths and difficulty that crisscross the island. The number 3 trail is a 14.5 mile (23k) route along the length of the island which passes through a few different country parishes. For a shorter route, follow the signposts for the number 4 route, a 5 mile (8km) trail that heads right into the centre of the island and the rural parish of St. John, passing Tesson Mill, The War Tunnels and National Trust property Morel Farm.

This time of year is excellent for foodies who can make the most of the road-side honesty boxes dotted all over the island. They offer the very best of local fresh produce and hand made treats. Make sure you look out for freshly dug Jersey Royal potatoes. Or pick a route that culminates at one of Jersey’s traditional country pubs and let someone else do the cooking, not forgetting to enjoy a creamy Jersey ice cream along the way!

I love exploring the new St. Peter’s Valley Route at the moment. Its track is set back under the trees and winds its way through the valley. Built in the 1540s St. Aubin’s Fort stands behind the beautiful harbour as protection to the bay during the war. You can explore the fort by walking across the beach at low tide, but be sure to check when the tide is due to turn as you won’t want to get stuck.

Battery Lothringen was the only German Naval batterie in Jersey. In the 90's the CI Occupation Society recovered one of the battery gun barrels, which were thrown off the cliffs at the end of the war and this is on display in Gun emplacement Number One.

Howard Davis Park

A locals’ favourite, this sheltered south-facing beach is a real sun trap where soft sand, rock climbing and rock pool adventures await. The tide goes out a long way, so take care with the swift incoming tide and pick times close to high water to enjoy swimming or paddling. 1

Grève de Lecq NW

The most popular of the north coast beaches, Grève de Lecq’s sheltered sands and rockpools are ideal for families but lose the sun in late afternoon. Don’t miss the excellent cafes and local pubs close by. 9

A tiny fishing harbour with space to play on the sand, picnic or catch some sun, but not ideal for swimming. Worth visiting for the excellent beach cafe. 4

Grouville Bay / La Rocque Harbour SE

A real suntrap on the south coast, once you’ve trekked down the steep path from the car park and crossed the pebbles, you’ll reach a sheltered south-facing beach with golden sand and shallow turquoise water, ideal for swimming. 12a

A long stretch of sand that leads to Gorey harbour, with Mont Orgueil Castle as a backdrop. Plenty of parking, beach cafes and kiosks as well as a childrens’ beachside playground and soft sand make Long Beach a local favourite. 1a, 2

Rozel Bay NE

A small fishing village lined with beach huts and harbourside cottages, Rozel is more of a fishing harbour than a place to swim. But at low tide, Rozel’s small stretch of white sand is safe for children to play on, just look out for the Rozel geese! 3

Havre des Pas S

Close to the centre of St. Helier, this sandy beach is worth a visit to see the architecture of the art deco pool, filled by the tide each day. The beach is easy to access, and safe for swimmers. 1

St. Aubin’s Bay SW

A crescent of south-facing sand from St. Helier to St. Aubin, the beach is in full sun for most of the day. With several beach cafes along the promenade front, look out for the softest sand around the Gunsite Café with jet ski hire close by. 12a, 15

Plémont NW

A pristine sandy cove reachable by a long flight of steps, where the intrepid are rewarded with a stunning natural playground of rock pools, sea caves and an excellent beach café perched on the cliffs. There’s safe swimming when the sea is calm, and surfing when it’s wilder, and the beach is completely covered at high tide.

St. Brelade’s Bay SW

The beautiful beach at St. Brelade’s Bay is one of the island’s busiest; a visitor favourite for its soft sand, safe swimming, beach activities and seaside eating. Voted as number three in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards, this stunning south-facing beach is in the sun for most of the day. 12a

Portelet Bay SW

Climb down the long flight of steps and you’ll be rewarded with a sunny, sheltered and sandy beach circling Janvrin’s Tomb at the centre. Portelet Bay Beach Café serves excellent pizza throughout the season, and the pub at the top of the steps, the Old Portelet Inn is a family favourite. 12a

St. Ouen’s Bay W

A magnificent beach and natural playground for surfers. It’s where one of the oldest surfing clubs in Europe has its home and makes a stunning setting for beach walks. Swimmers should take care in the strong currents and stick to the flagged zones. Patrolled by RNLI in high season. 22

Get the most out of your tax free shopping in Jersey

The GST Refund Scheme

Would you like to save even more on your jewellery and watch purchases while you’re in Jersey? Jeff Chinn from Hettich Jewellers explains how the GST Visitor Refund Scheme could benefit your visit, with a refund of Jersey’s 5% Goods and Services Tax in addition to Jersey’s VATfree prices.

If you want to take advantage of the GST refund scheme, which is available to visitors leaving the island by scheduled flights or ferries, and spending a total of £300 or more, then ensure you are buying from a participating retailer.

It's not compulsory for retailers to opt in, so ask before you buy. Once purchasing from a participating retailer, the process is simple. Fill out a simple form in store, have it stamped at the airport or ferry port when you leave, and send the form back to the retailer for a refund, less a small administration fee.

THE PROCESS

HOW TO CLAIM A REFUND

Once you are back in your country of residence, and within two months of your departure date from Jersey, you should return the retailer's copy of the stamped form to the retailer.

After receiving your form, the retailer must process your refund within three months of your departure date.

The retailer may charge an administration fee to process your form, but they should tell you this when you buy your goods.

La Mare Black Butter

Like everything from La Mare this is made in their in-house kitchen. Despite the name Black Butter is actually a rich and spicy apple preserve that goes back hundreds of years. The island used to be full of apple orchards and cider was made by farmers to give to staff as part of their wages! People would then make Black Butter by boiling the cider over an open fire for up to two days and would then add apples, sugar, lemon, spices and a hint of liquorice while continuously stirring with a wooden ‘rabot’ or paddle. Use it on sweet or savoury dishes.

On an island that is only nine miles by five, it always astounds me just how many incredible dining options we have, whatever the time of day. Here are just a handful of places to see you through breakfast, lunch and dinner during your visit this season.

BREAKFAST

Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day but also my favourite. Which means that I feel pretty confident I know of some of the best spots for breakfast, or brunching, on our little isle. Starting in St. Helier, there’s been quite the explosion of excellent brunch spots of late, Locke’s being just one of them. Here you’ll find excellent coffee and a small but mighty menu with dishes inspired by, and changing with, the seasons. They’re also quite the purveyor of excellently titled dishes too, Avo Good Day and the Notorious BLT being just two of their permanent fixtures.

Dandy have not one but two locations serving AllPress coffee and delectable food. Their chef bakes a plethora of tasty treats every day, including his own sourdough which you can have topped with almost

Be sure to grab a slab of their banana bread (toasted and buttered!) or a brownie and if you head to their Colomberie location on a Saturday ask for the Dirty Eggs, you won’t be disappointed! The only downside to the townie locations is they don’t open on Sundays, but this gives you the perfect excuse to hunt for a table with a view. Why not head over to Grève de Lecq, here you’ll find a multitude of places where you can enjoy food for most of the day, but my favourite has to be Colleen’s Café for their full English, delightful. It wouldn’t be a trip to the island without a visit to the Hungry Man in Rozel Bay, this brightly coloured beach hut is the perfect spot for an al fresco bacon butty or if you’re brave try the Double Decker Healthwrecker.

LUNCH

If you’re heading to St. Ouen’s Bay then a drive along the Five Mile Road offers up three options; Le Braye, El Tico or Sands all have excellent views of the bay and great menus full of foodie delights. They serve food throughout the day too so why stop at just lunch! Nude Food Beach has an excellent menu of wholesome food and fantastic views of St. Aubin’s Bay, open for breakfast and lunch daily and dinner too Wednesday - Saturday. One more westie must-visit is Off the Rails on the cycle track to La Corbière, serving Wednesday to Sunday with an excellent tapas and pizza menu with a strong wine list.

St. Aubin has an abundance of restaurants too, many of them along the Bulwarks overlooking the boats in the harbour. The Anchor Club offers up slightly more formal dining and the The Salty Dog, where you can enjoy excellent seafood right beside the water.

Or head to Bohemia where I dare you to choose their six-course Michelin-starred surprise dinner menu, which changes daily and is available Monday to Thursday, it promises to tantalise your taste buds and delight your senses. A recent addition to the scene is ‘Pêtchi, by Joe Baker, who was a finalist on The Great British Menu. All three of these town-based restaurants also have excellent bar areas should you wish to have an aperitif before you dine.

While Jersey only has one dedicated vegan restaurant (more on that below), we have lots of top-notch places that offer plenty of vegan options. So whether you’re a fully-signed-up member of the vegan community or just making a conscious effort to reduce your meat consumption, here are the restaurants in Jersey that offer meat-free munch.

The Sinful Vegan.

The Sinful Vegan is right at the top of the list as Jersey’s only dedicated vegan eatery. The café opened in 2018 and has been a firm favourite on the vegan scene ever since. It prides itself on offering an alternative dining experience with a 100% cruelty-free, plant-based menu. From spring rolls to vegan fish and chips, it’s a must-visit for breakfast and lunch and is also open for dinner on Friday and Saturday. Oh, and gluten-free eaters are well-catered for too.

Awabi.

This pan-Asian eatery has lots of tasty options for vegans that are way more than an afterthought. No last-minute mushroom risotto on the menu here. From Korean fried cauliflower and hot and sour aubergine, to their famous kimchi pancake. The restaurant itself has just entered the Michelin Guide, loved for its roster of Asian small plates and the atmosphere of a late-night drinking den.

Nude Beach.

Head west from town and you’ll find Nude Beach, a relaxed, beach-side hangout where you can tuck into creative and nourishing dishes as you look out to sea. Committed to its vision of a healthier way of life, Nude Food has plenty of vegan options and can make most of its vegetarian dishes vegan for you. Eating the Asian poke bowl with your feet in the sand, you’d be hard-pressed to believe you’re still in the British Isles.

Kismet Cabana.

For fresh, exciting flavours from around the world in a laidback setting, Ouaisné Bay is where you need to go. Vegan diners are spoiled for choice at Kismet Cabana where they serve quality breakfast, lunch and dinner to sit in or takeaway. Try the mushroom burrito for breakfast and go back for the tofu curry in the evening. Dine al fresco or in a marquee lit up with fairy lights, and you might even catch some live music if you’re lucky.

Ransoms Tearoom.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a quaint tea room tucked away in a garden centre in a rural corner of the island might not be the most obvious place for vegan food, but Ransoms Tearoom likes to surprise. There’s a huge selection of vegan cakes, vegan meals and even vegan no-milkshakes.

Pizzeria Famosa.

The words vegan and pizza might not usually go handin-hand but this pizzeria in St. Helier has lots of dairy-free options. Vegan cheese and an exciting mix of toppings mean you can devour slice after slice of the Italian staple with none of the environmental guilt.

Samphire.

For a vegan fine dining experience in Jersey, book yourself a table at Samphire. Paying homage to fresh produce found on the island, the team of dedicated chefs have created a series of contemporary menus and meticulously crafted plates. Whether you’re looking for a big night out or a quick last order, St. Helier serves up a great selection of nighttime haunts; from Blind Pigs to Porters’ Stores, Jersey have something for all.

The Weighbridge is a good place to start. The dominant Royal Yacht Hotel has a variety of different drinking options available, whether it be outside sipping wine in their large al fresco area, squirrelled away in the Cabin bar (the last remaining part of the original historic building) or dancing the night away in their ‘Drift’ bar, there is something for everyone. Just over the road, The Square offers excellent food options and you can also drink there until 01:00. Across the cobbles of the Weighbridge, Just up the road from the Weighbridge square on Hill Street is the expansive Chambers, which offers live music; a fusion of pub culture and bar atmosphere.

The Porter’s Store

If you fancy your nightlife a little more intimate. Tucked away behind Chambers is The Blind Pig, hidden down a back alley just around the corner (you can also get there through a little hidden door at the back of Chambers itself). One of our original speak-easy bars, it specialises in cocktails in a small but beautifully appointed room. Just a few turns away on Wharf Street, this year sees the addition of The Porter’s Store, which channels a 70s Americana vibe into its cocktail den.

Just one more right turn, on Broad Street, you’ll find Vinifera, worth investigating for an early evening glass of wine from one of the island’s most experienced owner-sommeliers. They also offer a private table in the basement, bookable for groups to take wine with delicious food.

If it’s wine time, you should carry on across town where you’ll find the newly opened The Watchmaker, a chic ‘wine, Champagne and charcutie’ bar. A stone’s throw away down a cobbled backalley is the clandestine Project 52, Once you’ve found the location you need to look for the buzzer and ring for entry. Open 17:00 - 23:00 from Wednesday to Saturday you can expect excellently blended cocktails, craft beers and a superb selection of gins and a nifty wine list too for a cosy affair of an evening.

If you’re looking for some pre-dinner drinks, the roof terrace at The Don is a sophisticated beauty above one of Jersey’s quality restaurants, Samphire. The roof garden provides the perfect oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the high street, where guests can sit and enjoy a drink when the weather is fine and enjoy wine by the glass, or one of their excellent seasonally changing cocktails. If you like the vibe of a premium hotel bar then don’t miss the cool calm of the Bohemia Bar and Roof Terrace at The Club Hotel and Spa on Green Street. A little more local knowledge...

History

The earliest evidence of human activity in Jersey dates to about 250,000 years ago and it was only 6,000 years ago that Jersey was part of mainland Europe before rising tides cut us off and made us an island.

During the American Wars of Independence, two attempted invasions of the island were made. In 1779, the Prince of Orange William V was prevented from landing at St. Ouen’s Bay and on 06 January 1781 a force led by Baron de Rullecourt captured St. Helier in a daring dawn raid, but was defeated by a British

army led by Major Francis Peirson in the Battle of Jersey. Jersey was the fourth-largest ship building area in the 19th-century British Isles, building over 900 vessels around the island.

Jersey was occupied by Nazi German troops between 1940 and 1945, with the Channel Islands being the only British soil occupied during World War II. This period of occupation saw about 8,000 islanders evacuated, 1,200 islanders deported to camps in Germany, and over 300 islanders sentenced to the prisons and concentration camps of mainland Europe. Many islanders remained and

the island was liberated by British troops on 09 May 1945, now celebrated as a public holiday locally.

People

Mostly a mix of Norman French and British settlers, Jersey’s community has also been enriched by the influences of the number of Europeans who also call Jersey their home. If you hear anybody referring to a Crapaud (French for toad) or a Jersey Bean they’ll be talking about one of the natives.

Language

The native language, which you’ll see displayed in a few locations around the island such as the airport and harbour is called Jèrriais but you’ll probably not hear it spoken unless you find yourself in the deepest, darkest of rural parishes such as St. Ouen, where 8% of parishioners speak it according to the results of a 2012 survey. English is the most widely spoken language.

Jersey and its neighbours

Jersey has an interesting relationship with both the UK and Europe in that it’s a Crown Dependency, meaning that despite having our own independent government, locals answer to the King and the British military support our interests should the need arise. Despite being part of the British Isles, Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom. We’re also not part of the European Union but are a member of the EEC. Confused? You’ll fit right in!

Honorary Police

In addition to the States of Jersey Police force, who serve islandwide, each of Jersey’s twelve parishes has its own police service that only have jurisdiction within the boundaries of their own

parish, also known as the Honorary Police, who are headquartered at each of the parish halls.

Economy

The local economy thrives from a combination of offshore finance, tourism, digital and agriculture. Bathe at our beaches, enjoy our local attractions, dine on our fresh produce including world famous potatoes and dairy products from the herds of local Jersey cows.

Tides

Jersey’s tidal range is one of the largest in the world with a range of around 12 metres. We’ve also got some of the cleanest water in the British Isles, which is a winning combination when it comes to keeping our beaches great. It’s worth noting that because of the huge tidal range that the sea level does rise quickly and it’s easy to get caught out. Be mindful that if you stray too far from the shore there could be a risk of tides cutting you off and leaving you stranded. Pay close attention to the signs and know the dangers.

Decoding the dialect

A local advises...

Whilst English is the most widely spoken language here in Jersey, if you find yourself interacting with some of the purest of locals you might notice a distinctive intonation that’s likely a remnant of our Norman roots despite sounding closer to a South African twang.

They’re hard to find these days but they’re definitely out there, mostly hidden away in the rural parishes. I should know, I’m descended from them and occasionally find myself pronouncing an ‘arn’ sound as ‘on’ in a way that’d likely disgust the King. The example sentence above sums this up

relatively succinctly. If you find yourself talking to somebody who pronounces words like this there’s a good chance they’ll be able to give you reliable directions. Just make sure you’re pronouncing the place names properly. To give you a head start we’ve listed a few on the page to the right.
