Jersey’s Art Scene

Jersey is an island full of art galleries and exhibition spaces to visit, enjoy and be inspired by. This year there are plenty of outstanding art events waiting to be discovered around the island, here’s an overview of what to look forward to.

CCA Galleries International

The CCA Galleries International is a contemporary exhibition space spanning four floors and showcasing the best of contemporary British art. The 2023 Jersey Summer Exhibition; the gallery’s biggest annual show featuring local work that has been judged by a panel of professional artists; takes place this year from 16th June-25th June. It is open to public viewing and all art will be available to buy.

Private & Public

Established in 2012, by Chris Clifford - Private & Public Ltd is a fine art dealership specialising in modern and contemporary art from all over the globe. The next exhibition is titled ‘Mixtape’ and features Pop Art, Street Art, Urban Art and the YBA generation of artists from the 1950’s through to the current day. The gallery which runs from Friday 24th March until Saturday 29th April, will showcase works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean Michel Basquiat, David Hockney, Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin amongst many others. Jersey Maritime Museum & Occupation Tapestry

Located by the historic harbour of St. Helier, the Maritime Museum is all about seafaring, navigation and the elements. Immerse yourself in the Island’s shipbuilding past with an interactive adventure including songs and stories of the sea, Jersey privateers and pirates, and maritime legends. Learn hands-on about the tides and designing a ship and follow the story of Jersey’s seafood, beach and seaside entertainment. Also on-site and not to be missed are the 13 panels of the tapestry woven by Islanders, which depicts a life of hardship during the five years of Occupation by German armed forces during the Second World War.

Jersey Museum & Art Gallery and Victorian House

The Museum and Art Gallery situated by the weighbridge in town, presents the story of Jersey from the Ice Age to the present day and displays some of the island’s finest treasures. The museum has an ever changing programme of events - don’t miss the current ‘People! Power! Protest!’ exhibition which will be live until July when the new art show will be launching. Stay tuned.

Infiniti

Infiniti is a unique concept store showcasing not only the finest diamonds and watches but international art too. The gallery has something for all tastes from the likes of Carla Segarra and Todd White to Jason Butler and Yuvi. Street Art fans rejoice because Yuvi will be hosting an event featuring his latest street art at Infiniti on 11th May- it'll be open to the public who're invited to meet the artist and browse his latest artwork, all of which will be available to buy. The Space Art Gallery

The Space Art Gallery, run by local artists Charlie Lewis and Holly Walsh aims to encourage and develop new and emerging artists in all media, not only displaying their work in the gallery but supporting artist collaborations.

The Merchants

Coffee shop and art gallery, The Merchants, is run by islander James Grant and provides not just a great flat white but a space for local creatives to exhibit their work. Peruse the artwork (which is all for sale) whilst enjoying a hot beverage and don’t miss the vinyl corner celebrating album artwork. Upcoming events include a commission free wall named the ‘Students Hall’ inviting A Level students from all the local schools to exhibit; kid-focused workshops throughout the summer and adult workshops with both local and international artists. The Merchants House, by Jane James

Jane James is an award winning artist and one of the best known ceramic designers in the Channel Islands. You can visit her flagship shop, The Merchants House, which is also home to her production studio overlooking the historic Old Harbour in St Helier. This is where a small team hand-crafts, glazes and fires all the ceramics, all of which are available to purchase.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Recently opened Flotsam and Jetsam is a bright and cheery gift shop located in Central market in St. Helier. Curated and managed by Tegan Jones, the artist Jane James’s daughter, the store is packed full of vibrant and unique gifts, stationary and pet accessories.

ArtHouse Jersey

ArtHouse Jersey is a charity that supports local artists to create ambitious work which is showcased in galleries, cinemas, online and performance venues all over the world as well as in local schools, care-homes and Parish Halls. With a newly opened exhibition space in Capital House, St Helier and a new HQ at the historic Greve De Lecq barracks, expect to see some exciting pop ups and events this year including ‘Cambion’ by UK artist Ryan Skelton from 6 April - 7 May 2023, following a successful residency in Jersey in 2021, ‘Playtime - a reimagining of Fort Regent’ by Will Lakeman from 24 May - 2 July 2023 and Kay Le Seeleur Ara, one of Jersey’s leading contemporary artists who will be exhibiting ‘Mrs Magnitude’s Emporium’ from 19 July - 20 August 2023.

Jersey Art Centre

The Jersey Arts Centre is an arts complex in the centre of St Helier, comprising a 250-seat theatre, a bar and restaurant and two galleries; The Bar Gallery on the ground floor, which is a small exhibition area, and the Berni Gallery. 2023 is an exciting year for shows, don’t miss ‘Diving For Pearls'; a retrospective of the work of Linda Rose Parkes, the Jersey-born poet and artist who passed away last year which will be running from 27th March until 22nd April.

Jersey Society of Artists

The JSoA is a friendly society of like-minded artists who meet together regularly to exhibit and paint. Their art club has been thriving for over 60 years and currently based at the Community Centre, St. Ouen. New members are welcome and encouraged to participate in the diverse painting sessions run weekly across the year. There are opportunities to exhibit and to attend various workshops run by professionals visiting artists or in-house. Take a stroll around St.Helier and see if you can spot how local artists have taken their creativity to the walls of the island's capital. Using buildings as their canvas you can find work from island artists such as Bokra, Abi Overland, Will Betram, Keelie Springs and Gabriel Pitcher.

Jersey excels at providing experiences on and around our coastal playground. Whilst the winter months restrict some actiivites, others are improved as wind blows kites and tides bring waves. Join a group of surfers, blokarters or SCUBA divers or simply climb the rocks or run the trails, taking in the distant views of France. FLY A KITE When the wind blows, Jersey offers a number of great spots to kite surf. Whether St. Aubin’s Bay, St. Ouen or the Royal Bay of Grouville, you’ll see kites flying. Lessons are available. WM

SUP IT Stand up paddle boarding became Jersey’s number one passtime during lockdown. Head to St. Brelade’s Bay to explore while working your core muscles and earning your evening mussels.
