What do you enjoy most about university?

University in general is an experience like no other. It is academically, socially and mentally enriching and an opportunity to explore life in an independent and exciting way. You are thrown into this whirlwind of lectures, library days, societies, sport and going out and you learn to live independently. Although daunting at first, this independence that is welcomed alongside university life, is something that has allowed me to develop my passion for my languages but also discover new extracurricular activities.

What is the most challenging thing about going to university?

Balance. When you first arrive at university, you want to do everything and saying yes to new opportunities are so important! Yet, finding this balance between academics, social life, and personal life is something that is difficult to adjust to and one that takes time.

Why did you choose the course?

After studying both French and Italian for A Level, I knew I really enjoyed them. I looked at some courses online and I was excited about delving into the culture in more depth, and of course, becoming fluent! Whilst the first two years of my course mainly focused on literature, film, music and politics, all which have been very interesting, what intrigued me most was the opportunity to spend your third year abroad. I spent 3 months studying in Siena, Italy, which was the most incredible experience. Alongside studying at the university, I was able to travel, meet some amazing people and improve my Italian to the point where I was dreaming in it! I lived with Italians and lived like an Italian. I am currently in Aix en Provence in the South of France where I am working as a tour guide in a top hotel, art and sculpture park. Again, living with French people and being completely immersed in French culture.

Any tips for students that are considering applying for university? University is great, but not for everyone and I think it is important to remember this. I have loved it, but it is a complete rollercoaster filled with ups and downs and lots of loops. But once you arrive at the end, you will probably want to do it all over again!
