A History of Eastern Washington University In 1882, the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy opened its doors to more than 200 enrolling students. A generous contribution of $10,000 from a wealthy transportation industrialist had at last fulfilled the dreams of Cheney citizens for an institute of higher learning in their community. The academy became the State Normal School at Cheney in 1889, the same year in which Washington was given its statehood. The school was proudly designated as an institution “for the purpose of instruction of persons, both male and female, in the art of teaching the various branches that pertain to a good common school.” By the time it became Eastern Washington College of Education in 1937, Eastern was already a fully accredited four-year degree-granting institution, offering majors in numerous subjects. The campus grew rapidly in size and program offerings in the decades following World War II. In 1961, the name was again changed, this time to Eastern Washington State College. It was increasingly evident that the region needed professionals in many fields; in response, a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs were added. Finally, in 1977, the name was changed to Eastern Washington University by the state legislature. As a regional university, Eastern is charged with the special responsibility of meeting the undergraduate and graduate educational needs of the region’s people.

To that end, program areas have grown and been redefined as the needs of the Inland Northwest have grown and changed. Master’s programs have been added to meet the need for graduate-level education, and individual programs and schools have increasingly been granted accreditation by their respective oversight organizations as those programs and schools have grown and matured. Today, Eastern students represent nearly every state in the union and more than 40 foreign countries. More than 100 different academic majors are available, offering students a wide variety of career-path options. Nearly 600 full-time and adjunct faculty teach on the Cheney campus and at several locations throughout the state. Three-quarters of Eastern’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate degrees. With a low student-to-faculty ratio, Eastern continues to stress small classes, personalized instruction and individual attention. Perhaps even more significant than Eastern’s steady advancement during the past 135 years is the university’s expanded regional role and its evolving goals, objectives and vision of its future. In the past decade, Eastern Washington University has become a major force in the state and the Pacific Northwest, not only in the education of more than 12,000 students each year, but in the civic, cultural, scientific and economic development of the state and region.

University Mace The tradition of a ceremonial mace for academic institutions goes back to medieval times. Adapted in form from the ancient battle weapon used by knights, the ceremonial mace symbolized the authority of regal personages, city or shire ruling bodies and chief officers of chartered institutions. Originally representing vested authority during all official meetings, it eventually came to be connected mainly with formal ceremonies. In academic institutions, this is usually in conjunction with an academic procession, where the mace is carried at the head of the line of march or just before the platform party. The form of the ceremonial mace has remained fairly consistent over the centuries. Design often reflects the period of creation, especially in the elaboration of ornamentation. Gold, silver and dark wood are traditional materials. Eastern’s mace, commissioned as a gift during the centennial year to the university by former and present members of the EWU Board of Trustees, was created by artist-craftsman Clifford Gaynard after a region-wide design competition. Its planished silver head in flowing cuplike form carries the university seal. The dark rosewood shaft with upper and medial gold-plated bosses is gently curved into the terminal silver cap at the bottom. Although the modern design departs from the traditional straight and elaborately ornamented pattern, it retains a full effect of balance, dignity and decorum, while capturing the flowing lines typical of the eastern Washington landscape. A permanent display case for the Eastern Washington University mace is located in the Office of the President.

Academic Regalia The regalia worn for formal academic ceremonies such as commencements are patterned after the gowns and hoods worn regularly in the Middle Ages by scholars for warmth in unheated buildings and as distinguishing dress denoting their place in society. A great variety of designs and colors developed over the years in the costumes worn at different universities. Since 1895 in the United States, a uniform intercollegiate code of style and colors has been adhered to by most institutions. In accordance with this code, most academic gowns are black, although some universities permit other solid colors. Occasionally, the robe color may indicate a professional distinction, such as deep purple for law or scarlet for ecclesiastical honors. Adaptations of the academic costume for high schools have sometimes used colors other than black for purely decorative purposes. Sometimes a distinguishing device on the robe or cap indicates an individual honor or a special occasion. The baccalaureate gown is of simple cut with full, somewhat pointed sleeves. The front is closed and often no hood is worn with this gown. The mortar board head covering originated in ancient Greece, symbolizing the

commitment of the scholar to a life of building. It has either a plain black tassel or one of a color indicating the subject area of the degree. The custom of shifting the cap’s tassel from right to left at the time of awarding the degree is used in lieu of investing each candidate with the bachelor’s hood. The master’s gown is similar to the bachelor’s gown, except that the sleeves are fuller, cut square with a halfcircle at the bottom and sometimes worn with the arms through a horizontal slit at elbow level. The doctoral robe is ampler in cut with a full bellshaped sleeve, velvet panel edging in the front and three velvet stripes on each sleeve. The velvet trim may be black or in the color appropriate to the degree. The mortar board tassel for the doctorate is gold. Some American and many foreign universities use cap forms other than the mortar board, ranging from a soft velvet beret to more elaborate fringed styles, each of which has its own historical tradition. Hoods worn over the gowns have a velvet edging, usually in a color indicating the specific degree and a lining which is partially turned out to show the colors of the college or university which granted the degree.

Some of the colors used for tassels and velvet panels to designate the degree are: Addiction Studies Arts and Letters Business Dentistry Economics Education Engineering Fine Arts, Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning Journalism Law Library Science Music Nursing Philosophy Physical Education Physical Therapy Public Administration Public Health Sciences Social Work Speech Theology

Faculty Emeriti Recognition Heather R. McKean

Diane Marie Norell

After a 34-year career, Heather McKean, senior associate faculty member in EWU’s Department of Biology and Eastern alumna (’75, ’83), will retire this spring. McKean’s legacy at EWU includes developing a wellrespected science education program, organizing Science Olympiad competitions, generating more than $2.8 million in grants to support students and science education, and classroom contributions that advanced the educations hundreds of biology teachers. Her own career began as a secondary science teacher. Using that experience, at EWU McKean developed the BAE in biology/secondary science education for future high school teachers, and the BAE in natural science for future elementary and middle school teachers. Both programs are premised on the idea that science teachers must have a strong foundation in their subject. As a supervisor for regional, state and national Science Olympiad competitions, McKean has brought these competitions to Eastern every other spring. In 2000, she brought the National Science Olympiad to EWU. More than 3,000 students participated in this event. McKean has also been a successful in attracting extramural funding. She was instrumental, for example, in securing for EWU the Noyce Scholarship National Science Foundation grant in both 2010 and 2017; funding that increased the number of quality science teachers in low-income schools. In addition, McKean has to her credit numerous publications, workshops, presentations and consulting projects. She has been a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, Washington State Science Teachers’ Association, Washington State Science Olympiad, Regional and State Board of Directors, Teachers of Teachers of Science.

Diane Norell ’s career with EWU spanned more than twenty-five years, beginning in 1994 as a Faculty Field Instructor in the School of Social Work, and continuing in the Department of Occupational Therapy, as semester faculty, academic fieldwork coordinator, lecturer, and senior lecturer. For fifteen years, her position was a joint appointment between EWU and Washington State University; as a faculty with Eastern and a Research Associate with WSU’s Washington Institute for Mental Health Research and Training, (WIMHRT). Norell received a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy (1974) from the University of North Dakota and a Master of Social Work (1982) from Eastern Washington University. Her practice area in both fields has been in public mental health and substance use/misuse systems of care. The dual role and unique lens of both occupational therapy and social work enabled her to specialize in psychiatric rehabilitation and provide an emphasis on inter-professional education to occupational therapy students. Norell’s passion and experience enabled her to create a strong curriculum in the occupational therapy practice area of mental health. She had an innovative and effective teaching style with a desire to energize, inspire and motivate students. The use of humor, and open, collaborative dialogue resulted in consistent positive student’ responses. Beyond teaching, Norell served as an academic fieldwork coordinator. She collaborated with a vast number of regional fieldwork instructors in placement and engaged in the supervision of students during clinical internships. Her commitment to developing student placements in rural healthcare assisted the expansion of occupational therapy services to those areas. Norell was a productive scholar during her tenure. She was a key author in several peer-reviewed journal articles; co-authored a book chapter and manuals regarding engaging clients and families in rehabilitation related to mental illness, spinal cord and traumatic brain injury; and participated as a presenter at local, national, and international conferences.

Peregoy was elected to be one of two Washington State American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) Audiology Advisory Council (AAC) members. She held this role for two consecutive 3-year terms. Even though she has retired from teaching at Eastern, Peregoy holds the institution in high regard, and is proud to say that she is an alumnus of the program. Go Eagles!

Jeffrey L. Stafford, PhD, served EWU as a Professor of Organizational Communication and Leadership Studies for 32 years. He supervised over 100 graduate theses and projects, mentored countless interns, and founded the Leadership Certificate. One former student stated, “He is a superior instructor with the knowledge, the experience and the ability to assist the participants in gaining essential knowledge needed to be strong and dynamic leaders in the dynamic and changing world.” Another said, “Ya just got to like this guy. He knows his stuff and teaches it in such a way that it is exciting and interesting…” Dr. Stafford earned his PhD in Communication and Leadership from the University of Kansas (1990) and a BS Architecture (1977) and MS Counseling & Student Personnel (1981) from Kansas State. During his time at EWU, he served as Department Chair, MSC Director, Associate Dean, and Associate Vice-Provost. He was recognized as the University Professor by Student Government, earned Dean's and University Faculty awards for Service and Teaching, received the EWU Trustees Award, and was named the NCAA Division 1 Faculty Athletic Rep Newcomer of the Year. Stafford’s Action Research approach helps individuals and organizations strategically improve while creating a dynamic, sustainable, positive culture. Most of his work is regional, but he has presented as far away as Saudi Arabia and Japan. Stafford has been involved with many nonprofit organizations, donating time and energy to help them in achieving their mission. Reviews of his work note that he has that “rare mix of business and academic credentials that results in an effective merging of theory and practice.” Stafford is an avid wood worker and collector of baseball cards and comic books. Having accomplished many of his career goals he still has a few left: Science Officer on a Star Ship, Imagineer for Disney, Center Fielder for the New York Yankees, and Illustrator for Marvel Comics.

Trustees’ Medal Award The Trustee’s Medal Award is the university’s highest form of recognition for faculty achievement. Each year since 1978, the award has honored teaching excellence, significant contributions to scholarship and research,

and accomplishments in the development of academic programs and curriculums. The award consists of a silver medallion and a $1,500 cash prize from the EWU Foundation.

Camille McNeely Camille McNeely, PhD, is a professor of biology at Eastern Washington University. A respected authority in the fields of biology, environmental science and sustainability, McNeely is also an extraordinary champion for students. She earned her doctorate in integrative biology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2004, and joined the EWU faculty as an assistant professor in 2007. An aquatic ecology specialist, McNeely’s work explores links among ecosystem processes, community interactions and natural landscapes. Her research and teaching impact the entire region, with implications for everything from trace mental pollution and rainbow trout ecology to white sturgeon recovery efforts. McNeely’s sustained scientific contributions and strong advocacy for student research during her 15-year career at Eastern truly exemplify the teacher-scholar model. She has mentored more than 30 undergraduate research students, many of whom, thanks to McNeely’s support, have presented their

20

work at national professional conferences. She has also overseen 13 graduate students, each of whom have worked on projects of major importance to environmental restoration efforts across the region. Lucy Roussa, an undergraduate majoring in biology at EWU, has been conducting research under McNeely’s mentorship since winter quarter 2020. “The mentorship that I have received from Dr. McNeely has helped me grow tremendously as a student and as an individual,” writes Roussa, who joined the McNair Scholars program at Eastern thanks to McNeely’s encouragement. “Her guidance has ultimately led me to a fully funded position in a PhD program at North Carolina State University, where I will be studying phytoplankton ecology. Although I acknowledge my own hard work, it is only through Camille’s support and encouragement that I will take this next step in fulfilling my dream of becoming a marine scientist.” McNeely’s colleague and department chair, Rebecca Brown, also a professor of biology, writes that McNeely’s “tenure at the university is a testament to her institutional commitment, passion and expertise, and every contribution is made with compassion, respect and grace.”

Distinguished Service Awards The Distinguished Service Awards are given each year to recognize exemplary service and outstanding contributions to the university. Letters of nomination and support are reviewed by the University Medals and Awards Committee.

The award includes the Distinguished Service Award medallion and a check for $1,000. These awards were presented at the University Family Thanksgiving reception in November 2021.

Elizabeth Baker

Lynn Burks-Herres

Elizabeth “Beth” Baker, former director of the Adult and Lifelong Learner Resource Center, is a creative problem-solver who does her homework, builds collaborative relationships and always put students first.

Lynn Burks-Herres is a collaborative colleague who goes above and beyond to provide personalized service that makes a positive impact for EWU students, faculty and staff.

Administrative Exempt

Although Baker recently left the university, she made a tremendous impact on adult and lifelong learners during her time at Eastern.

Classified Staff

Baker’s many accomplishments, as recounted in nomination letters from her colleagues, included identifying the needs of the older learning population, launching a resource hub for EWU adult learners and serving as an advocate for this non-traditonal student group.

While working as a senior secretary in the Department of Psychology, Burks-Herres was the main source of support for some 600 current and prospective students.

Baker worked hard to remove barriers so that older and returning students could complete their degrees and advance professionally. That included stepping up to help when students faced daunting challenges. When Covid-19 interrupted plans to create a center for adult students, for example, Baker created a library of web content to expand access to important resources.

Burks-Herres now works as senior secretary for both EWU’s Department of Economics and its Department of Political Science and Public Policy. Her previous colleagues in psychology – and some of the students she helped – wrote moving nominations to recognize her outstanding work.

Virginia Hinch, retired associate vice president for Student Resources and Career Development, calls Baker a “consummate collaborator,” saying she worked across divisions and departments as an advocate for the adult learners she served. Baker also worked tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of students and colleagues, said Samantha Armstrong-Ash, associate vice president for Student Life and dean of students. Baker had a strong history of service and a passion for students, she said. Robert Saunders, vice president for Student Affairs, said whenever larger policy and strategy directions were discussed, Baker always asked, “How will this affect students?” Recently, Baker took on the challenge of auditing the records of students who had dropped out to see if any actually qualified for a degree. Beth took a “student-centric approach to create lasting and transformational change in student lives,” Saunders said.

Her eagerness to help, combined with extensive institutional knowledge, make Burkes-Herres a go-to person for students like Miriam Carlson. Carlson, an Eastern undergraduate and McNair Scholar, praised Burks-Herres’ warmth, devotion and knowledge of programs, academic requirements and resources. “Every time I interact with Lynn, I feel heard, seen, and acknowledged as an individual by her attentiveness, genuine devotion, and reassuring presence,” Carlson said. Undergraduate Justin Dunfee said Burks-Herres encourages students to succeed in the face of adversity, adding that she “is compassionate and enthusiastic about helping others, creating an environment in which students feel confident, respected and courageous.” Christi Wavada, program coordinator for Graduate Studies, said “Lynn successfully interacts with and works with individuals from all walks of life in the most compassionate, non-biased and genuine manner.” Burks-Herres’ contributions are numerous, said Kayleen Islam-Zwart, professor and chair of the School of Psychology. Students look to Lynn for support and wisdom, she is attentive, has great ideas and gives every student her full attention: “I cannot think of a more deserving person,” she said. In his nomination letter, Jonathan Anderson, dean of the College of Professional Programs, cited Burks-Herres’ excellent knowledge of systems and processes, and her network of connections. “Perhaps the greatest trait Lynn brings to our campus community is her personality and demeanor,” he said. “Lynn brings a new definition to ‘customer service.’ 21
