January - August 2024

Welcome Hello again, and thank you for taking the time to review our first New Year’s brochure. We hope you enjoyed the Christmas season, one of the Everyman Theatre’s most successful, with Mother Goose breaking pantomime records and sold-out performances of A Christmas Carol and The Ugly Duckling in the Irving Studio Theatre. We also produced a very special performance of The Ugly Duckling, streamed live to children’s hospitals nationwide, and supported by the theatre’s knitting group, who painstakingly handcrafted more than 130 knitted animals themed around the performance (pictured below). I want to extend a very special thank you to Caro Day, all the knitting group members, Dean Close School and Rathbones for their support of this project. If you are interested in joining the knitting group or any of our other fabulous education and outreach programmes, visit our website or contact Caro Day on caro.day@everymantheatre.org.uk. We are delighted to welcome David Suchet back to the Everyman for a long overdue evening of entertainment. David will launch the national tour of his one-man show with us, as will Gloucestershire’s favourite farmer, Kaleb Cooper. Kaleb’s performances sold out in

record time and we look forward to welcoming fans of his inimitable humour and charisma on Clarkson’s Farm. We’ve packed our new season with outstanding drama, musicals and comedy. We are especially excited to launch another Everyman Theatre production, which will open on our stage before touring to prestigious venues nationwide. Our outstanding Artistic Director, Paul Milton, will again harness the comedic talents of Tweedy and Jeremy Stockwell (who starred together in our production of Waiting For Godot) as they reunite for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Our Community and Education department continues to engage with thousands of citizens throughout Gloucestershire, working with children, young people and vulnerable citizens throughout the county, as well as organisations such as Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers and Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees. While we’re grateful for the support we receive from Arts Council England to finance a portion of this work, there is still much more to do. If you want to know how to help us deliver these valuable services, please get in touch with francesca.goddard@everymantheatre.org.uk. Finally, we would like to thank you for your support throughout the past year and hope you will be back to visit us many times in 2024. Sincerely,

Mark Goucher, Chief Executive

Noises Off *****

DIRECT FROM THE WEST END One of the greatest British comedies ever written comes to the Everyman Theatre direct from a triumphant West End season.

‘One of the most joyous farces ever written… reduced me to laughter so helpless I could barely see the stage for crying’ Whatsonstage

Michael Frayn’s celebrated play serves up a riotous double bill, a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed, Noises Off follows the on and offstage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through the fictional farce, ‘Nothing On’.

‘Pure comic bliss… dazzlingly brilliant… reduces well behaved adults to hysterical wrecks’ Mail On Sunday

A stellar cast will be led by Liza Goddard, Paul Bradley and Simon Shepherd. Liza Goddard’s extensive stage comedy credits include Life of Riley, Communicating Doors, Season’s Greetings, Relatively Speaking and the Everyman Theatre Company’s own production of A Passionate Woman. Paul Bradley is best known for playing Nigel Bates in EastEnders and Elliot Hope in Holby City. Simon Shepherd‘s many credits include Peak Practice on TV and the West End productions of Posh, The Duck House, Rapture, Art and Hay Fever. Don’t miss the award-winning comedy that created the template for every play that ever went wrong!

Ukrainian National Opera presents: Following their spectacular debut last year the Dnipro Opera from Ukraine returns with three classic productions featuring an impressive cast and live orchestra of over 30 musicians.

Carmen

Carmen tells the story of the downfall of Don Jose, a naïve soldier who falls head over heels with Carmen, a seductive, free-spirited femme fatale. The infatuated Don Jose abandons his childhood sweetheart and neglects his military duties, only to lose the fickle Carmen to the glamorous toreador Escamillo. Love, treachery, passion and betrayal, Carmen has it all.

‘ La Boheme

Puccini’s passionate story of love at first sight set in Bohemian, 19th century Paris among the students and up and coming artists. ‘ La Boheme is the tragic tale of the love between Mimi and Rodolfo the freewheeling poet. When poverty and ill health take their toll on Mimi a harsh reality sets in and the couple soon realise that love cannot conquer all.

Madama Butterfly

No opera can match the tragedy and sorrow of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Set in Japan at the turn of the last century, it is the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride whose self-sacrifice and defiance of her family leads to tragedy. This touching tale of innocent love crushed between two utterly different cultures resonates as strongly as ever in today’s world.

It's time for the wife to tour now...

“Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean you’re not being followed!”

Dom Joly has been off travelling the globe again. This time, he’s been looking into some of the strangest and weirdest conspiracy theories in existence. Now he’s set to embark on a rather unique theatre tour, where Dom will be providing a hilarious, fascinating, and slightly anarchic guide to the wacky world of conspiracies. In the spirt of fairness, Dom will also be inviting a well-known and highly respected conspiracy theorist, Dr Julian Northcote, to take the stage and defend the alternate view. Due to the extremely controversial views aired in the show, security will be at an optimum and audiences are warned that angry demonstrations are very likely – or is that just another conspiracy?!

Sleuth BY ANTHONY SHAFFER DIRECTED BY RACHEL KAVANAUGH STARRING TODD BOYCE AND NEIL MCDERMOTT

Todd Boyce (Coronation Street’s notorious baddie, Stephen Reid) and Neil McDermott (EastEnders, The Royal) star in Anthony Shaffer’s masterpiece, directed by award winning Rachel Kavanaugh (The RSC/Chichester Festival Theatre).

Sleuth is one of the greatest ever stage thrillers and played for a total of 12 years in both London and New York. Winning the Tony Award for Best Play, it also became the inspiration for the hugely successful film starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Cain.

A young man (McDermott) arrives at the impressive home of a famous mystery writer (Boyce), only to be unwittingly drawn into a tangled web of intrigue and gamesmanship, where nothing is quite as it seems... This dark psychological ‘thriller about thrillers’ makes for an intriguing study of human conflict, jealousy, and manipulation. English Touring Opera presents: Stravinsky: The Rake’s Progress

Puccini: Manon Lescaut

Polly Graham directs ETO’s new production of Igor Stravinsky’s brilliantly inventive opera, a masterful blend of farce and tragedy, and a powerful depiction of a young man’s fall.

Manon Lescaut was Puccini’s first great success, portraying the flaring of love in a dramatic and musical triumph.

Tom Rakewell leaves his quiet country life and his love Anne behind when the charming and sinister Nick Shadow offers him a bright new start in London. But Shadow’s promises aren’t all they seem, and Tom soon finds out that the devil makes work for idle hands.

Manon’s life has taken a dramatic turn – bound for a convent, she escapes into a whirlwind romance with the young student Des Grieux. When he can’t provide the life she wants, she leaves him for the rich and powerful Geronte. But wealth and luxury never can’t replace the passion she shared with her lost first love, in a new production directed by Jude Christian.

Legend – The Music of Bob Marley

Punt and Dennis

Direct from the West End - Reggae for the World

Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt are back on tour for the first time in 10 years.

When you think reggae, only one name comes to mind - the legend that was Bob Marley. Legend - the music of Bob Marley is an unforgettable evening celebrating this musical icon in one fantastic stage show extravaganza. Combining his superb, distinctive vocals with flawless musicianship, a supremely talented cast recreates the timeless hits Could You Be Loved, Is This Love, One Love, No Woman No Cry, Three Little Birds, Jammin', Buffalo Soldier, Stir It Up, Get Up Stand Up, Exodus, Waiting in Vain, Satisfy My Soul, Iron Lion Zion, I Shot the Sheriff and many more reggae classics.

Older but not really much wiser, they are returning to what they do best; sitting in traffic jams wondering if a different route would have been better, and then in the evening, presenting their new live show. What have they learned from a decade of following the news for Mock the Week and The Now Show? What wisdom has experience taught them? And have they learned any new jokes? Let’s hope so. The Power of Love

The Other School

The Phossy

The Everyvoice Choir, along with special guests, once again performs a spectacular concert.

Twins Polly and Kester Parish are bored of first days. It's their fifth new school in five years thanks to Mum's job.

Welcome to The Phossy, where the fire of rebellion is igniting among the match factory workers.

This time telling an epic gothic tale of how good will always triumph over evil, especially when it has The Power of Love, music, and laughter on its side.

This school is a bit different though. Every student seems to have suffered a random freaky accident. Some of them enjoy snapping their limbs and slamming their fingers in doors. That Headmistress is definitely not all there, not to mention the creepy Caretaker. Welcome to The Other School - once you're in the system it'll never let you leave!

Come and join the fight this summer when the Everyman Youth Theatre take to the main stage. An original show written by Martin Lytton in collaboration with the Everyman Youth Theatre.

Originally commissioned by National Youth Music Theatre in 2013.

Lou Conran: Bobby Davro’s Bunion

An Evening of Deception

The Farmer And The Clown

Award winning comedian and BBC R4 Comedy Club host, Lou Conran brings her new show to your ears and discusses the absolutely imperatively important topics such as: What is a bunion? Where is Bobby Davro? And why does fame bring so much joy and pain in equal measure, and why oh why is the world of TV so fickle?

No Everyman season would be complete without our sell-out magic show, An Evening of Deception and this year we’re bringing two acts direct from the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe.

An old hard-working farmer lives alone. One day, a baby clown accidentally bounces off a passing circus train and is left in the middle of nowhere, separated from family and friends.

With silly stories, a bit of game show nonsense and her usual fruity fair, Lou Conran shows why she is a firm favourite with audiences around the country, and why live comedy is far better than sitting in front of your telly-box. As seen on Sky Comedy, CBBC, CH4, ITV & BBC. Co-host of Spit or Swallow Podcast, and host of How’s Your Week Been? Podcast.

Alan and Kat Hudson (BGT and winner of Penn & Teller: Fool Us) join forces for Married at First Sleight to find out what happens when two magicians get married. Could it lead to fame, fortune or divorce?! Alan and Kat will be joined by legendary magician The Great Baldini with Illusionati as he tracks down a secret cabal of magicians using conjuring clues. Imagine Tommy Cooper trying to crack the da Vinci code! Compèred by Steve Knibbs you’ll get to see both shows in one night but don’t forget to book early as An Evening of Deception always sells out.

A little reluctantly at first, the farmer takes the clown in. As time passes, they discover that by being with each other, they find something in themselves. Acclaimed guitarist-singersongwriter Nick Harper plays from his latest album Tempus Fugitive and extensive back catalogue.

His folk and psych-rock stylings recall older songwriters like Mickey Newbury, Nick Drake, Gene Clark, and Neil Young. But they also live in the world of modern classic writers like Andy Shauf, Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy, Bedouine, and Bill Callahan. His voice has been compared to Roy Orbison and Bryan Ferry. This is a rare chance to see him playing in the UK touring his latest album Meantime.

56

Johnny has recorded over fourteen albums including The Winding Stair, Borderland, Edge of Day with writer Laurie Lee, his latest album River of Dreams, and he has just celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the release of Forest & Vale & High Blue Hill – his first album of Gloucestershire songs.

This is not a normal ‘one man and guitar’ show. In a new, uniquely styled, acoustically driven album and live show, Nick explores the past, present and future in his own singular way. Expect everything from the emotional to the political, from witty to virtuosic; the singular to the universal.

Johnny has performed at many festivals, and venues large and small and is making a most welcome return to our intimate Irving Studio.

The Carrivick Sisters

Josienne Clark

Jack Rutter

The Carrivick Sisters are one of the UK's top young bluegrass and folk acts.

Indie-folk singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer Josienne Clarke is often said to draw on traditional British folk inspirations, but is a thoroughly modern, multifaceted artist who follows her own compass.

Yorkshire folk singer Jack Rutter has established himself as one of the standout voices of the folk, roots and acoustic music scene in recent years.

Twins Laura and Charlotte perform their original songs and instrumentals along with a few carefully chosen covers on guitar, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, and clawhammer banjo. Their busy touring schedule is rapidly building them a reputation for engaging and entertaining live performances with tight sibling vocal harmonies and multiinstrumental virtuosity.

Blessed with a voice of crystalline beauty and clarity that has been compared to Sandy Denny, her myriad talents translate effortlessly to the live space in performances that are all her own.

A hugely engaging stage presence, his soaring vocal, powerhouse guitar and bouzouki playing and masterful arrangements of traditional songs and contemporary covers have enthralled audiences from the largest festival main stages to the most intimate folk clubs.

Having grown up in South Devon, an area rich in folk lore and legends, much of their original material is inspired by their local surroundings and history.

She has extensive touring experience having been a Rough Trade-signed, Radio 2 Folk Awardwinning artist, and has also been hand-picked as main tour support for folk legend Richard Thompson. She’s shared a stage with Robert Plant and has written songs for an adaptation of The Snow Queen for the National Theatre.
