TURNING POINT YOUR LIFESTYLE,YOUR WELL-BEING

EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome Ladies and Gents. 2021 was for some challenging and painful. For others in spite of the challenges, it was a powerful year of opportunities, manifestation, more self-awareness with the freedom to fly into the realm of possibilities and opportunities. A year of letting go, of re-defining, of taking time to look at the man in the mirror in order to get up close and personal with self. To get real and authentic with where we are at and where we want to be and go. For others it has been a turbulent year. People have lost loved ones, their jobs, homes and their world has been turned upside down so much so it will take a lot of emotional strength, courage and support to get them back on their feet. Remember that saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ but now the village is needed for the village. As we enter into a new phase, a new juncture in our own lives and on a global level, what will the focus in 2022 be? Will it still be one of survival and uncertainty? If so, how are we going to approach life as we go through it? Perception is key to how we view where we are going, in order to move forwards differently, to gain the outcome we want. Can we find the strength, compassion and fortitude to make better, different, greater strides? To recognise that life is short and therefore, to declare what we want and where we want to go in our lives. Achievement is not always about our careers or finances. It may be that you want to travel more, join a dance class, learn to sing, to build better relationships or simply be who you want to be. What’s it going to take to make you discover what makes your soul sing? There are many unsung heroes and sheroes who have been working tirelessly and relentlessly especially since the pandemic hit the globe. Not just our doctors and nurses but our mental health practitioners, and people generally who were drawn together, to look out for each other due to the global situation. People who were bought together through each other’s humanity, to look out for their ‘universal brother or sister’ which was not defined by culture, colour, background nor status but by the situation that we were all forced into, where all of a sudden – we were all truly ‘in this together.’ In this issue the thread is to support each to continue into the future with resilience and hope. The stories shared in this issue will hopefully galvanise you to rise, to keep getting up to become your own hero or shero, not only for your children but your family and community. Become the change you would like to see in the world. Would you like to leave a legacy? We have an exclusive with legend American Soul, Funk, Jazz Composer, Jazz legend, Vibraphone Player Roy Ayers along with his trusted Publicist Brigette Wiley who gives Contribus a greater insight into ‘Uncle’ Roy Ayers. You will also be inspired by words of wisdom from Resident Contrib utor Kwame MA McPherson, who talks about being ‘unsung’ whilst also treating us to a wonderful short story. Then there is Tony Jazz who writes for our Fine Dining Section and it’s always a magical treat to see what gastronomical delights he conjures up. Charles Wright of ‘The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band’ gives us an insight into his latest book ‘Up from Where We’ve come’ the true story of his family as share croppers and the terrible treatment they received and yet there was something in Charles which drove him beyond his circum circumstances to become one of the most successful and celebrated artists of all time. There is humour by our very own Aunt Gertrude, laced with a hint of sarcasm and lots of good old fashioned truth. There is so much more inside these pages. Remember, no matter what – Become the change you wish to see in the world. You never know who’s watching you, or who you are inspiring. Become your own Unsung Hero or Shero because you could be that person to someone else who feels Unseen and Unsung.

Roy Ayers

a Legend Unsung

Photo Credits: Celebrity Chef Tawanna Devine 2021

Roy Ayers is an American Soul, Funk, Jazz composer, vibraphone player, and music producer. His tunes are shaped by sophistication and elegance, and his Soul-Jazz & afro-beats influences brought to us the timeless " Everybody Loves The Sunshine", "Running Away" and even the more recent "Good Vibrations" (in partnership with Kerri Chandler). Vibraphonist and vocalist Roy Ayers is among the best-known and most respected jazz and R&B artists on the scene today. The first part of this interview is with Roy Ayers. The second part with Brigette Wiley his Publicist who has known Roy long enough to call him Uncle.

Part 1: In Short with Roy Ayers Esther Austin: Who is Roy in a nutshell, a peanut shell, or a coconut shell? Roy: A coconut shell! Thank you. Esther: You toured the UK in April 2019 on your Ubiquity "Mystic Voyage" 45th-anniversary tour. What did the UK audience receive from the legendary Roy Ayers? Roy: My audience, especially new people, received a lot of love and respect from me. Esther: You’ve been in the music industry for a long time influencing and touching a lot of lives. What does music do for you? Roy: It breaks down and enhances my creativity. Esther: When you're on stage, how does it make you feel to be empowering, inspiring and speaking into people's lives with your music? Roy: It makes me feel very good because I get inspired, and then I perform even better and nothing could be more inspiring than that. Esther: Your compositions, ‘Everybody loves the Sunshine’, ‘Searching and Running Away,’ where did the inspiration for these tracks come from? Roy: They were inspired by the people at large, therefore enhancing the whole audience experience. Esther: You've worked with some incredible people in your lifetime. Name one or two artists who really had an impact on you. Roy: Those who had a very strong influence on me were George Benson and Bobbi Humphrey who is a great creative artist. There are still so many other great artists even though so many have died which is a damn shame.

Esther: When you perform, where do you get the energy from? Roy: I got it from my mother, father. They inspired me, they drove me, I loved it, it was wonderful. Maybe that energy was a way to creativity. It's great to be a creator. Esther: You once toured with Fela Kuti. That must have been quite an experience! Roy: There was really something very powerful and influential about Fela. It was definitely a wonderful spiritual connection and an experience that I’ve never had so much before in my life. Esther: What are some of your own personal beliefs about humanity? Roy: I believe that all people are blessed by God. Esther: If there's someone out there who's thinking about stepping outside their comfort zone, what will be the one piece of advice you would give them? Roy: Live creatively and believe in good and know that good will come to you.

On a personal note I was introduced to Roy Ayers 20 years ago by his best friend who happens to be my uncle Frank Chapman. There are two significant moments that stand out in my relationship with Roy. One 9 | SPRING 2022

was when Roy invited me on stage to sing the song “Everybody Loves The Sunshine“ with him. I was embarrassed because I didn’t know all the words but he made me feel comfortable by whispering the words in my ear. That was an epic and once in a lifetime experience and I will always cherish it. That footage is on YouTube https://youtu.be/euMBNwqYXdg. Another significant moment was when Roy and his wife flew to Chicago to take me and my husband at the time to dinner. During dinner he insisted I call him Papa Roy because he considers me family. From that day forward my relationship with Roy has been awesome and very spiritual. He’s like an uncle to me and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him. He occasionally will call me not knowing I was at my lowest just to tell me not to give up and that he believes in me. That kind of connection you don’t take for granted because it’s golden and timeless just like his music.I love and appreciate Papa Roy. We are all so blessed to have him. Roy is 81 years old and still traveling and performing around the world and overseas. He is an extraordinary artist and human being. Roy is known as The Godfather of Neo-Soul. You've known Roy for a long time, what are the special attributes that Roy has that makes him unique in your eyes? In all the years I have known Roy I would say that the following attributes make him unique: His ability to not only adapt to new musical idioms and styles but the way he uses his creative genius as a jazz musician to enrich these idioms (like pop and hip-hop) with his own unique style of playing and singing music. As an Independent artist, why do you think Roy has survived in the industry for so long?

TURNING POINT YOUR LIFESTYLE,YOUR WELL-BEING

Roy Ayers continues to survive as an independent artist because, as one of the creators of smooth jazz, he continues to be innovative and interactive with new artists coming out of pop and hip-hop music. You mentioned in a previous conversation that Roy is so much more than a musician, can you elaborate on that? I mean he is a cultural Icon who has created a new idiom in music that, like hip-hop, will survive for generations to come. You are the owner/executive producer of a magazine called Chicago Bridge which honours extraordinary people, how did Roy become involved in this? Over twenty years ago I approached Roy about my magazine doing a feature article reviewing his new album on smooth jazz. Roy was so impressed with the review and our presentation of him on the cover of the Chicago Bridge Magazine that he agreed to do many subsequent articles, including one with Erica Badu. He also agreed to join our editorial board. For over two decades now we have covered almost every concert featuring Roy Ayers. Being Roy's publicist what has that journey been like for you? As Roy’s Publicist here in Chicago I have had the incredible experience of getting to know first hand his multi-generational fan base. I have witnessed the love his fan base has for him and how he has culturally enhanced their lives. The legacy that Roy brings to the world, the inspiration of his music and who he is as a person that he brings to the world what is that? Roy takes his music on tours everywhere in the world ie to Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. He is loved in England as much as he is loved in Nigeria, Japan, South Africa and Brazil.

10 | SPRING 2022

Many people feel that Roy is an unsung legend, that he should’ve received more accolades. Why do you feel he wasn't at the forefront as many other artists? To the extent Roy comes out of the same musical jazz tradition as a John Coltrane or Miles Davis one might say that he is an “unsung legend”, or that he like other Black artist didn’t get their rightful place in the “forefront”. But I think Roy has been and is a legend and one of the greatest people’s artist of all time. Roy is an activist, what do you feel is the essence of Roy' around his take on humanity? As a Black artist Roy has not just expressed through his music a call for justice he has taken action like joining the struggle against Apartheid in South Africa.

Roy’s Highlight During Covid 19 New record release June 19,2020 The eight-track album, Roy Ayers: Jazz Is Dead 2 (JID 002) was released on 19 June and is available on vinyl, CD and as a download or stream. It was written and recorded collaboratively by Younge, Shaheed Muhammad and Ayers between 2018 and 2020, and recorded at Younge's Linear Labs studio in Los Angeles.

September 10, 2021 on Roy’s Birthday The Chicago Bridge Magazine honored Roy Ayers with an Extraordinary People Award Trophy & Plaque.

Coming Soon in 2022

Roy will have his own exhibit in the Chicago Bridge Magazine Extraordinary People Hall of Fame Virtual Museum

Roy will be performing at the Jazz Café, London February 2022 http://www.royayers.com

FEATURES Kevin Osei:

Driving the Narrative of Success Against the Odds Kevin Osei

is a final year student at the University of Leicester studying BA Politics and International Relations. Alongside his studies, he is the Founder and CEO of Bridging Barriers, a free mentoring initiative focused on helping young people aged 16-25 from ethnic minorities and disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve career success and improve their personal development. Kevin is also a weight loss consultant and mindset coach, after losing nearly 50kg in 6 months, Kevin is now helping people who are looking to follow in his footsteps. Kevin is also an artist manager, managing two upcoming versatile music artists called R3 and Kobo. Lorem ipsum

My Motivation: The motivation behind setting up my mentoring company stemmed from the area I grew up in. I grew up in a borough called Newham, one of the poorest boroughs in London and one in which there’s very high levels of gun and knife crime in particular amongst young black men. About 5 years ago, I noticed that a lot of these young men getting themselves involved in gang related activities were very talented, whether that was in sports, music, academia, etc. I had a goal of eradicating and minimising the number of young people going down that route. Living in Newham, I have grown up seeing and hearing about a lot of things. Some of the things that made me realise I had to do something about it was having friends and family go to jail or get stabbed due to gang violence, seeing innocent people get hurt, hearing stories every week about someone getting stabbed or shot began to get really draining.

The Power of Changing Mindset:

I had to develop a nonchalant mindset. Nonchalant in the sense that, growing up where I grew up and being a relatively well known guy in my borough, it’s tough being the only one doing what I’m doing. I had to develop the mindset of “don’t care about what people think and do what makes you happy”, at the end of the day I have a goal and a vision, and I’m not going to stop until I get there regardless of what people think or what people may say. For me, I think some of the reasons why some people go down certain pathways are - a lack of a father figure, a lack of a role model, a lack of guidance, a lack of funds and insecurities. All of these reasons plus more, contribute in my opinion to why some people go down the wrong route.

I feel amazing since completing this diet and inspiring thousands of people. I feel so happy that I’ve been able to show people what’s possible. Also, upon completion of the diet there has been a double benefit. Not just the weight loss results, but a change in my mindset. I feel unstoppable and this is because I know what’s possible. Now whenever I come across difficulties in life, I say to myself “if someone else has been able to do this, then why can’t I?” I remind my clients that I am no different to them. I am not a robot, I am human too. We all have the same 24 hours, how do you chose to spend your time? I remind people that, when you’re embarking on a challenging journey, you must remember the reasons, lose the excuses and you’ll gain the results.

When the tough Gets Going What do You Do? When I’m in a moment and I feel like throwLorem ipsum

The power of changing one’s mindset for me is through God. I’m a Christian and so I link everything back to my faith. With God, anything is possible. Have faith, believe in yourself and pray. You can achieve anything you want to achieve, as difficult as it seems.

Services we Offer:

We offer mentoring for personal and professional development. In terms of personal development, if someone was dealing with imposter syndrome for example, our personal development mentors are able to help with their self-belief, confidence and self-esteem for example, as well as skills like communication, time management and organisational skills. In terms of professional development, our mentors can help with career advice, guidance and with their application process (CV, interviews, etc).

My Health and Well-Being Success:

My weight loss journey! It’s been a difficult one to say the least, the moment I realised I had to lose weight was 28 February 2021. I saw a picture of the boxer Andy Ruiz and he transformed his body in about 18 months. Then I was like, if he can do this so can I. I weighed myself the next day on 1 March 2021 and I saw 123.6kg and I nearly vomited! That was the moment I realised something had to be done. I made this transition by starting a diet with Cambridge 1:1 Diet, which consisted of meal replacement products. I replaced my everyday meals with meal replacement products and went from eating 3000-4000 calories a day, to eating 800 calories a day for 6 months. During the diet, I was also exercising every day for the first 4-5 months. If I wasn’t in the gym, I’d be going on walks. I love a challenge. Whenever my consultant told me that I should be at a certain weight by a certain time, I always tried to exceed those expectations. I did this diet to show everyone that anything is possible, as long as you put your mind to it and believe in yourself.

13 | SPRING 2022

ing in the towel and giving up (which I’ve had a lot of times), I remind myself of my ‘why’. Why am I doing this? What do I want to achieve? I get myself thinking. Reminding myself of my why is what keeps me going, it fuels me. Whenever I feel challenged, I remember that nothing worth having in life comes easy. If it was, then everyone would be successful. There’s a reason why the percentage of people at the top of society is low compared to the rest of society and that’s because they’re things that the majority of society isn’t doing, e.g. being consistent, disciplined, committed, patient and determined. Being recognised as an unsung hero is very important to me. I want to inspire the next generation and the current generation too, since sharing my weight loss journey I’ve received thousands of messages and people have been telling me that they never knew this was possible. I’ve been told that I’ve paved the way for a lot of people and I’m glad I’ve done so, I just want people to believe in themselves more, because if I can do it, then so can you.

Photo Credits:Stan Wilson Esther: After reading your profile I known you are a deep and compassionate woman with a love for humanity. So who is Doc Honeycutt? Doc Honeycutt : I'm a doctor, a mom, a businesswoman. I'm a motorcycle rider. I'm a mental health advocate. I am a professor. I love to teach, to help inspire people. Everything I do is from the heart and I have to have a reason behind it. I don't want to be on this earth just to be here. I am here to make a difference. Especially with mental health, because mental health and mental health illness is real. But nobody wants to talk about it. Nobody wants to start the conversation but I will and usually when we get talking about it, we can't get off of it because people want to continue talking because they know there’s a big need and a lot of people that need help out there. 14 | SPRING 2022

TURNING POINT YOUR LIFESTYLE,YOUR WELL-BEING

Esther: The work you do is deep on many different levels. You’re there for people when there is no place else to go and you're reaching into those deep places. You also work with children who've been through abuse and trauma. Tell us a little bit about that. Doc Honeycutt: I work with people and children from all walks of life. I had the opportunity to be a foster parent. When you get these children, they're damaged and you don't know what they've been through, because they’ve been through so much. I knew I couldn't provide anything else, like letting them ride in limousines or the finer things but I knew that I could provide a safe haven for them mentally and physically. So that's what I did. I would bring them in. They wouldn't stay with me because I was like the emergency personnel until they found permanent housing for them. But during that time, I embraced them, and let them know that they were safe with me. If I couldn't give them anything else, I could provide a safe haven at that time and I made sure they got that because once they left my house, they would have all the resources they needed in order to become successful young men and women.

Esther: In a sense you’re giving them space to be acknowledged, however, whether they recognized that or not, is a different thing simply because of where they're coming from. However, you're embracing them with love and even if they never meet someone like you again, they would’ve had a taste of what that feels like, which is really important. You also work with the community as an activist and I believe you're also humanitarian. Share a more about that. Doc Honeycutt: Outside of working with health and wellness and helping people reach their goals, I'm also a mental health advocate. I go out into the community, and talk about mental illness. I let everybody know that this thing is real and there are resources there to help. I tell

15 | SPRING 2022

people to check on their people because nobody wants to start a conversation. If your people are looking different, or they're having a different conversation, or they're alienating themselves, let them know you are there for them, and that you can get help. But like I say, nobody wants to start that conversation because people get embarrassed. They're embarrassed because the first thing people say is, ‘oh, you’re crazy’, or ‘pray about it’ or ‘you can beat this thing’. There are resources, people have been damaged mentally long enough and it's time for people that are having these challenges to get help. I've experienced a low place in my life, however, I can't say that I suffer from depression. Everybody has had a bad day. So if we've had a bad day, how does that feel for somebody to be in that dark place every single day. Family members I've watched some of them suffer from this drastic illness, and I wanted to do something about it. Also, if there are any families who have somebody that's suffering, don't sweep it under the rug. They need counselling, because if you're living with somebody that has PTSD, bipolar or suffering from depression, you need to know the triggers because you could say the slightest little thing and it could be a trigger for them. So know the triggers, know what it takes to set somebody off because a lot of people don't know and then they create a fire that they can't put out. I have patients that come to me, and I refer them to mental health specialists. I’m just an advocate but I make sure people get all the resources they need. My go-to place is the Genesis Project. They set you up for health success. You go to them one time, they do all the testing they need, and then they come out to you. They’ll even come to the park, wherever you're comfortable they will meet you. Some people just need somebody that they can hold to their truth, that they can talk to and not be judged. Some people need medication and if you need medication initially then it’s ok, then they can evolve to know that medication and therapy can work together for the good

Esther: I feel the pandemic has exacerbated the situation around mental health because so much has happened within a short space of time. Therefore, how do you keep yourself sane and balanced? Doc Honeycutt: I stay rooted and grounded. I work out. I try to keep a positive attitude and make sure I keep myself around good energy. Our energy is very important and the energy we bring into our lives is very important as well. So I try to make sure that I keep a great balance of who I have around me. I also journal because it’s very important and if you are journaling every day, you can look at what happened on Monday noting that you felt good, but then Tuesday, you feel a little sad, and you can go back and look at maybe why you felt different on those days and narrow down what the trigger was. I’ve written seven books. Writing is very important because you can express yourself ad set goals. When I've reached a goal, I can check it off and pat myself on the back because we don't want to wait for validation from other people. We want to learn how to

TURNING POINT YOUR LIFESTYLE,YOUR WELL-BEING

validate ourselves. We want to learn how to do everything we need within ourselves first. We don't have to depend on anybody else. I don't have to depend on anybody else to make me feel good, to make me know that I'm beautiful.

Esther: Leave us with a quote that you feel will inspire individuals!

Photo Credits:Jason Hart Esther: Love that. You also host a show called ‘Beautiez and Bikerz’ that's on some major platforms. It’s a Bikers’ show which is fabulous. Tell us about your show.

‘You may be going through this now but there is hope for you in the future. Don't think about where you are, think about where you're going’. ‘Don't ever think that you can't. Can't is not a word. If you start a goal and it doesn’t work the first time hit that reset button. Step back. Think about why it didn’t work the first time, change your angles, but don't change your goal and I guarantee you, when you come back at it the next time, you're going to be closer. Sometimes you might have to go back one more time. But don't stop, do not give up because giving up is not an option.’

Doc Honeycutt: My show ‘Beautiez and Bikerz’ started with me doing a documentary called ‘Rude Gal Ryders’ - it's on TV as well. I wanted to express why ladies wanted to ride motorcycles. Everybody had a different story when I interviewed them. The reason I did this was because I wanted to help people. When I first started biking, I’d have people approach me saying things like ‘you're in a motorcycle gang’ or they thought we were wild and crazy because we were on motorcycles. However, I’m a doctor, I’m saving lives every single day. So I wanted to let everybody know that we have lives as bikers. We are women. It used to be a man's game but we changed the face of that and I wanted these ladies to be able to express why they wanted to ride motorcycles. Everybody has a different story. For some it was for health reasons or mental health reasons, whatever their story was, we put it in that documentary. So ‘‘Beautiez and Bikerz’ came from the documentary. People like action more than they do the learning side of things. So I thought to myself, let’s do a reality show and I thought of a good catchy name which depicted us as being beautiful women, doing great things in the community, and we're bikers as well, so I came up with ‘Beautiez and Bikerz’. I shot a two-minute trailer two years ago of ‘Beautiez and Bikerz’ and it went viral. I got picked up to be on a network and I didn't even have one episode. Now the show has taken off. We're on 15 networks. We're on the Spectrum and on cable stations everywhere in five states, including the state that I'm in North Carolina. We're on a Roku, Firestick 103 countries worldwide. It's been amazing.

TURNING POINT YOUR LIFESTYLE,YOUR WELL-BEING

I was inspired to take up that calling because I gravitate more towards women and mothers because I know how important the role of a mother is, and being a woman. Many times we pour into everybody, yet often times nobody pours into us. That's why ‘Moms Motivating Moms’ is so important to me, because it's a time for women to come together to empower and encourage each other, to be that resource for each other because knowledge is power. We have a whole lot of knowledge and we need to share it with one another. My conferences and motivational speaking experiences are all about motivating, encouraging and giving women and mothers resources so they can take it back into their homes, communities so they can be rejuvenated, refreshed to be ready to go again. It's so important that we as women or as mothers, understand that it's okay to ask for help. It's okay that you don't know everything because we don't know everything. There’s no embarrassment because it's not where you’ve come from or what you have or don't have, it’s where you're headed. As long as you understand that you are beautiful, and God loves you just the way you are. We need to reach each other and not judge each other. It's important for me to make sure that women understand, you're not perfect, I'm not perfect, but it's okay, where you are right now is enough for you to move forward into your destiny. So many times we hear the negative of what you can't do. When people come forward with their dreams and what God has given them, so many times other people come behind them and try to discourage them. I call them Dream Killers. My thing is we're not supposed to kill anybody's dream, we're supposed to inspire them, to tell them the truth. We want to encourage and not discourage, because everybody is not going to be at the same place at the same time and that's okay, but they will get there. Learn how to respond and not react, because you have no idea what someone else is going through. Everything that God shares with you, or gives you, you can't share with everybody, because once again, everybody is not in the same place, whether it be faith-wise, whether it be in their lives, or to understand or comprehend where you're headed. And that's okay, that doesn't make them lesser than you or you better than them. It's just that they're at a different stage in their lives, and they can't understand. Sometimes God uses you as an example and a sample, even in the midst of them being negative, to show them, it's okay, I'm still going to move forward with this and I'm going to love you because we have to always lead with love, because we never know what someone is going through.

Esther: So, what do you offer to support Jacqueline Griffin: Authenticity is so importwomen from abusive backgrounds? How ant. It’s the one key thing I found and learned do you reach into those places? through my years of having my own issues with abuse and surviving divorce and I can go on and Jacqueline Griffin: I reach into those spaces by on. But what I've learned through it all is to take a being transparent. A lot of times we want to talk at look into the mirror at myself and when I have people instead of talking to people. Sometimes the certain reactions to certain things or certain simplest thing is to sit there and reveal a little bit people I always go back and say, “Why did that about yourself. Being open and honest with them person doing that or saying that make me feel in about yourself through transparency, opens up a such a way?” And when you learn to identify door, because then they say, “Wow, she shared that things within yourself first, before you try to play with me and that was personal and intimate so maybe this is a safe space because if she can share that with- the blame game and putting it on someone else, out worrying about what I think or if I'm going to say you really have to search your own heart and be something, then maybe I will be able to do the same”. authentic with yourself and be real with yourself I lead with love and an unconditional heart to a place before you can even begin to be real with others. where it's not going to be judged. I'm not going to Authenticity just means I need to be safe and judge you based on anything that has happened to comfortable in knowing who I am, and then you or what you've done. What I'm trying to get you being that person and not trying to fake it or to understand is that it's okay, you have to learn how trying to fit in. I want you to accept me for who I to love yourself again and if you love yourself enough, am. If you don't, that's okay. That doesn't make there's a lot of things that you won't allow anyone to you a bad person. It just means you're not the do to you. person for me. Esther: This whole thing of sharing and being transparent and authentic, some people will see it as being vulnerable!

‘Moms Motivating Moms’ originated because God was like, “I know you're quiet. I know your nature is to stay in the background, supporting others, but now it's time to move forwards, I need you to get out there and do what you were born to do.” I’d always heard moms or women telling me, “I can't do this, or I can't do that”. I had to be willing to put aside my own fears and concerns about being in the forefront, because I can't help from the rear if I don't share from the forefront, my experiences and what I've gone through and be transparent.

Esther: This is really powerful stuff Jacqueline. Thank you for being so honest and open. Now let’s talk about your children and some of your own 19| SPRING 2022

challenges especially with what your son Robert Griffin III an American football Quarterback had to overcome when he injured his leg. Jacqueline Griffin: I have three kids and one son, Robert. He actually tore his ACL, which is a ligament inside your knee. Because of my faith, I've always been taught that the power of life and death is in the tongue. So even though we may be going through something, and it's right there in front of us, it doesn't mean that we have to speak it. So, with my faith and teachings, I learned to speak the opposite of what I was feeling, the opposite of what was actually happening and I taught that to my kids and Yes, it’s hard. I remember when he tore his ACL, and as I'm walking to the locker room, I'm conditioning my mind because that's what we have to do, we have to condition our mind to think a certain way. So I'm conditioning my mind, as I'm slowly walking in, saying, ‘God, I don’t know why this happened, but it's just another test and we're going to get through this. I’m not going to cry, I’m not going to appear weak, I'm not going to even appear to be dishevelled by this whole situation, because my faith is not in the situation, it’s in you’. And as I walked in the room, people were upset, and my son was crying. So I let everybody talk to him and say whatever they had to say then I walked up to him and asked whether he was ok. He just shook his head and I said, well, here's what I'm going to tell you this is one of the greatest tests of your life and you are going to have the greatest testimony ever. You’ve got tears now, but now it's time to get back to work.

Esther: Ok, but what about the allowance of understanding where he was at, at that moment in time? With the need to cry, to have space to heal, to understand that he may have up and down days? Jacqueline Griffin: I believe in the holistic approach of an individual, whether it's a child or an adult, and that is the mental, emotional, spiritual, or physical. I tell all of my kids, especially my

son, that it's okay to show emotion, it's okay to cry, but what we're not going to do is get stuck there because we’ve got to move forward. So we will take time and acknowledge, yes, I'm hurt, I'm angry, I don't understand why this happened. And you can cry about it. But what we're not going to do is get stuck the

Esther: Excellent. You come from a military background, Jacqueline, how much of that has formed who you are today? Jacqueline Griffin: I came from meagre beginnings. I came into the military as a way of survival and to change the direction of my life. I loved it. The military afforded me opportunities that I probably would never have had the ability to afford for myself. So having kids and being married and traveling the world in the military, and letting them see other aspects of life, letting them see the differences and letting them grow up in a multicultural environment, where they learned to manoeuvre and live and adapt in any situation was priceless.

Esther: Also, I'm curious about why you chose to go on the path you are on. I believe it was formed by initial life experiences, can you share those with us? Jacqueline Griffin: I'll share a childhood experience and an adult experience. My parents were going through whatever they went through. As a child, you just don't know. Then I remember the day, like yesterday, when my mom was standing at the Front door and my dad and her had a conflict that involved getting the authorities involved. She then said to myself and my little

brother “I'll be back for you”. She never came back. I was 11 at the time, one of my brothers was eight and the other brother five. From that moment, at 11 years old, I had to deal with abandonment from my mother and on top of that, being thrust into a position in a household, which was not what an 11-year-old should have to become, a mother to her little brothers. So, that right there and being in a household with a father, who was a drug addict and an alcoholic was a terrible dynamic and it was a dynamic for failure. But because of my faith and relationship with God, I was able to get through it. I don't know where that strength came from. That's why I always tell people it was God because two little boys were dependent on me, and I had to be strong for them. So growing up with abandonment and living in an abusive household, I'm telling you, you can make it. God made it so that I'm here today to be able to give you all that testimony. Then being in a relationship or in a marriage for 31 years that really did not allow me to be who I was supposed to be. I took on a persona to please someone and I lost myself in the midst of it. Unfortunately, it took me 30 odd years to find myself again, but I did and in the midst of it all, it made me a better and not bitter woman. So, I can say that in my childhood and in my adulthood, the experiences I've had, have only made me better and not bitter, because I've conditioned my mind and my heart to forgive, for my mind to be positive, and to speak words of life over me and not death.Experiences are something that happened to you, but they do not have to define you. You write your own story, you take from that what you need, and you keep moving forward, let it be the thing that propels you to be greater, not the thing that propels you to fail. There is no failure in you if you learn to accept and understand that everything happens for a reason, you can only control what you can control and keep moving forward.

Brenda

sits on many Committees and not one for keeping still, in 2020 she published

“The Life of Jackie Wilson – The Legacy Continues.” In this book we get an insight into

Brenda’s father, Jackie Wilson, an incredibly talented performer who not only inspired the world but other legends as well. He was a tenor with a four-octave range, and a prominent figure in the transition of rhythm and blues into soul. Wilson was considered a master showman and one of the most dynamic singers and performers in pop, R&B, and rock and roll history, earning the nickname "Mr. Excitement". Copies are available online at amazon.com and barnesnobles.com And when we think that writing a book about her father would be a happy, rewarding yet exhausting pursuit, we find out that Brenda has and continues to do volunteer work and has supported and volunteered in many states in the United States as Master of Ceremonies, Celebrity Host and Judge, and also as a vocalist-entertainer. Brenda is also the winner of 3 Emmys for songwriting, audio recording, and video. She is a member of the Tuskegee Airmen and Chairman of the Entertainment Committee.

Last but not least and one really cannot be surprised by this, Brenda’s achievements have not gone unnoticed and she has been the recipient of numerous awards from the U S Representative Michigan, Congressman John Conyers, Michigan State Representatives, Coleman Young, Jr., Mayor City of Detroit, Detroit City Council, Wayne County and Wayne County Commission, and other community organizations. Brenda also received the Highest Recognition Award from the late State Representative Isaac Robinson, “The Great Seal of the State of Michigan/Music Industry Legend”. (We honor the state representative who passed in March 2020 from COVID19). The entertainment world can be a minefield to navigate through, the competition is fierce, keeping a parent’s name alive as a legacy can be challenging as individuals too strive for their own identity and success. Yet Brenda is one of those Unsung sheros. Constantly moving forwards, supporting and building her platforms to support and showcase the talent of others – from those starting out on their journey, to the more seasoned artist, entertainer or performer. It seems that everyone has the chance to have a slice of the cake, with Brenda Wilson.

RENEWAL William Hinds Behind Solar Fountains in Careenage, Barbados

The festive lights of Bridgetown keeping the UNESCO World Heritage site aglow with colour this holiday season, are also illuminating the shimmering spray of water spiralling high up in the air, from fountains playing in the inner basin of the Careenage. It is a new feature that is attracting many people amidst the Christmas hustle and bustle of the city. The nightly spectacle is largely a demonstration of the solar ingenuity of William Hinds, one of Barbados’ foremost proponents of solar energy. In 2004 he introduced Barbados’ first solar electric vehicle, a solar-powered golf cart, which followed his introduction of Barbados’ first solar-powered bicycle. Next came solar shuttles, the first of their kind in Barbados and the Caribbean, on which tours of Bridgetown were conducted. Hinds has labelled his latest venture a “Fountain Salute to Barbados.” He has brought reality to his long held vision of “solar fountains revitalising the Constitution River through the use of renewable energy that is efficient and sustainable while increasing the appeal of Bridgetown as an economically viable, aesthetically pleasing heritage site for business and entertainment.” The solar energy specialist, who in 2004, conceived, designed and built a trident shaped floating fountain that was floated in the Careenage with the assistance of Aquasol Water Heater Company, has now made it possible for Barbadians to experience the delight of six fountains He said from as far back as 2006, he had a vision for fountains in such places as Dolphin and Montefiore (two city fountains) being powered by solar energy. In 2016 he shared his idea with the Ministry of Tourism, while in 2017, the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry and David Bynoe of the UNDP-GEF Small Grants Project in Barbados were also approached.

26 | SPRING 2022

Hinds said while the BCCI did not respond, the response from Bynoe was “almost immediate”. However, since the UN only funded nongovernment organisations (NGOs), he approached Dr Erwin Edwards, the then president of the Barbados Energy Professionals to allow that NGO to develop the project and in 2018 a 70-page proposal was submitted and negotiated. Edwards and Hinds are cofounders of the NGO, each one with decades of experience and working collaboratively professionally on and off since the 1980s. Giving the background to the project that has now come to fruition, Hinds said a survey of city businesses and visitors was done in 2018 to gauge long t e r m sustainability of the project and that response was positive. M e a n w h i l e , Edwards had also informed the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. (BTII) about the original project and that agency offered to expand it from four to six fountains and suggested bigger fountains, an idea embraced by Minister of Maritime Affairs Kirk Humphrey and Minister of Housing, William Duguid. It was agreed to have the fountains in place for November 30, 2021. Mission accomplished. Hinds and his team were “happy to salute the Government of Barbados on the occasion of transitioning to the republic of Barbados.” The former Harrisonian is a graduate of the UWI Cave Hill Campus. He was awarded the British Government’s Chevening Scholarship in 1984 and gained a Master of Science degree in alternate energy from the University of Reading, which covers the entire spectrum of alternate energy.

William Hinds was bestowed the Barbados Jubilee Honour for Innovation in 2016.

This book provides an early educational opportunity and is a tool for parents, teachers, mentors, and young children to have a discussion about the effects of bullying, how to identify it, and how to prevent it. As millions of children are returning to the classroom this fall, they will experience the effects of bullying at the hands of their classmates and or peers. HEALTH AND

WELL-BEING Facing Your Truth Holistically

The theme Unsung means so many different things to different people. It often references being unseen, unnoticed, not appreciated. Therefore, we can question whether being UNSUNG in any shape or form is it really such a ‘bad’ thing? Because in the background of life there are Unsung heroes, leaders who are quite happy to play those silent roles, because in the delivery of what they are doing, they in themselves feel honoured. It’s just that sometimes society dictates what and how we should feel or think. 29 | SPRING 2022

TURNING POINT YOUR LIFESTYLE,YOUR WELL-BEING

As a Holistic Healer and therapist, coming from that spiritual and holistic perspective what do you feel can be the basis for someone feeling Unsung? I guess some people can feel unworthy if they do not get recognition for what they do or what they have contributed to society. Most of us like to feel appreciated it gives us a sense of accomplishment, but by whose standards? Society? Why do we care so much about what other people think of us? When we feel whole within ourselves we need not to look for outside validation. As long as you love what you do and you are coming from an authentic place of honour, integrity, humility and compassion.

Feelings of unworthiness, hopelessness, lacking in confidence all contribute at times to feeling like an unsung human-being, what can you offer to individuals who may be feeling this way?

I would go through a consultation first to see what the individual’s needs are and also see what I can pick up intuitively. I can offer a natal chart reading to look at the many aspects of the client’s life and see if they are following their true purpose and it will allow me to see how they process their emotions. I can offer a reiki healing to help clear away energetic blockages or theta healing to work on releasing negative beliefs that are stored in the subconscious. I can also give a tarot or oracle card reading to see what divine guidance has to say. Intuitive readings can offer clarity or confirmation.

Why do you feel you are called to do the work you do?

For a long time, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I didn’t know what my natural gifts or talents were so I just worked different jobs to pay my bills. Still I felt I wanted to do something that would help humanity in some way. It was not until my father passed away that I really started to question what life was about. Surely not just to work and pay bills! A transformation began without me knowing it. I started to look into the spiritual side of life, metaphysics, ancient teachings about health and well-being. This was where I felt really comfortable and at home and most of all this was something I really enjoyed. Through this discovery I found my calling and it is something that comes naturally to me.

How do you feel when you are able to support a client and see their transformation or they find hope around their situation?

It makes me feel good and fulfilled that I was able to help in some way. We are spiritual beings having a human experience which means everything comes through spirit first, so being able to work with these spiritual practices helps healing from a holistic approach the mental, emotional and physical.

What is the importance of self-reflection, taking time

30 | SPRING 2022

to be still? It is about listening to that inner voice that divine inner guidance and listening to your intuition, being able to trust in what you feel to be true and sifting out the nonsense. In silence wisdom whispers. This is a time where we can be honest with ourselves to see what is working for us and what does not and then taking the necessary action to move forward.

Why do you think people are often afraid of the unseen, the holistic or spiritual side of life?

We live in a material world and so it is about what is tangible, what can be seen or heard to be believed - it is all very physical and practical based. People are afraid of the unknown or what they do not understand. When you do spiritual work it involves working with the energetic fields of our bodies which often cannot be seen and so alot of people think it is a bunch of hocus pocus. We are not taught these things about ourselves in schools and if coming from a religious background you would be taught to stay well away from such things as it is branded as “evil” which is just not true. Each to their own I say. However, I feel to know God to is know thyself and to know thyself is to know God! God is to be experienced through you and within you not to be worshipped as something separate and outside of yourself.

What is the beauty you feel in what you do and what you have been gifted to do?

It is very humbling. We all go through our hurt, pain and struggles in life. I hate to see people suffering. It brings about a great feeling of compassion and empathy. It is good to see people make positive transformation in their life. Those that truly want it. Everyone has their own journey and choices to make. I am only here to facilitate and support that process through what I can offer. How has your own personal life journey, struggle, challenges given you insight into the type of work you? I have lost both my parents in very quick and shocking circumstances on separate occasions, which just threw me into a whirlwind of feelings and emotions I cannot. If it was not for my spiritual practices and my understanding of the cycles of life and death, I could’ve lost it. I had to remain grounded by going for walks in nature, spending time alone, doing quiet prayer and meditation to keep centred. Allowing myself to grieve for the loss but being at peace with it.

What has personally been the most scariest moment/or pivotal moment in your life where you felt you needed to/or were energetically pushed to change your life around in some way?

Becoming a parent, becoming a mother! This was scary for me as now I am responsible for another human being. I had to get it together mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually to manage the many ups and downs of being a mother. It is a huge life change and wake up call. It is a

rollercoaster of emotions to manage whilst trying to raise a good and decent human being to contribute to society. Being able to create balance is key!

As with the four seasons, with all their various changes, we all go through different periods in our lives, why is it important to try to accept change? Change is inevitable. We cannot run away from change whether we like it or not. It is a part of life in order to grow and to learn. We can actually do more damage to ourselves by holding onto something or someone that no longer serves a purpose in a positive way. It is more how we react and deal with the changes happening in our lives. How we choose to perceive it. Certain changes can bring about some hard challenges and some are a blessing in disguise. There are certain aspects of our lives that is beyond our control and these are the times when we need to surrender to the divine, surrender to the universe. Easier said than done I know, as it is about trusting in the unknown. In the autumn a tree does not try to hang on to its leaves, it simply lets go and comes back bigger and more beautiful by the spring. Transformation. You’ve got to know deep down in your heart what is for you and what is not.

What is the most important thing you would say to anyone who is in some sort of pain or struggle and who would like to find a way out or who wants to seek help but doesn’t know how or where? I would say reach out! Don’t suffer in silence talk to someone who may be able to suggest a way to seek help. Go online put your questions in a search engine that could come up with what you need or call a helpline just to talk. We have to be able to feel comfortable and safe to express what we feel without judgement.

Good job, you’re doing a good job, good job, Don’t get too down, the world needs you now Know that you matter, matter, matter - Alicia Keys, Good Job

The Hindu Sanskrit greeting Namaste, translates as namas - reverence/ salutations/ bowing and te – you. Speaker, Author, Teacher Trainer and Yoga Culture Advocate Susanna Barkataki, points out in her blog that ‘there is no I… the energy, or essence of revering, bowing and adoring is all there is.’ In many spiritual practises, singing praises becomes a way to subsume individuality in the service of a greater cause.

The chants of football fans, warriors going into battle and protestors with placards, likewise summon up a greater, heroic self, powerfully bonding singers in creative resilience and shared purpose. We find choirs of everyday heroes drawing strength and respite from singing together. Breathe Harmony, Guys & St Thomas’ NHS staff choir, run by Breathe Arts Health Research and led by Mike King, describe their choir as a family. Alicia Keys dedicated the song Good Job to all frontline workers I’ve been honoured to lead some sessions when she released it in April 2020. She literally sang their praises. for them recently and it’s been so moving to hear them sing Alicia Key’s song Good Job together. In many global oral traditions, praise singers, such as West African griots, Indian Bhats and Celtic bards were virtuoso story-tellers, We can see the power of praise very holding tremendous power as they preserved the legacy of deities, clearly with our children, who blossom in an atmosphere of encouragement and leaders and communities in music, song and poetry. acknowledgement as they learn and So praise can be a magical, precious thing - when we genuinely grow. Whilst we often give praise as a sing someone’s praises we do so much more than just compliment reward for accomplishments and achievements, associated with rewards or flatter – we witness, honour and affirm their greatness. and trophies, the labour of love that makes our daily lives possible is just as worthy of praise. 32 | SPRING 2022

The inequalities of the global economy disrupt the awareness that our lives are dependent on the labour of human beings. The work of those who harvest and supply our food, make our clothes, sweep our streets, teach our children and care for us when we are sick often goes unsung, unseen, unheard, unpaid and unacknowledged. The fashion industry, for example, depends on globally sourced cheap labour to produce massive amounts of clothing at low prices - in 2017, pleas for help from unpaid labourers were found in items of Zara clothing. Annie Lennox’s Charity, The Circle, are campaigning to ensure a living wage for predominantly female garment workers. Contemplating the labours of love that keep our world turning can inspire us to be more mindful, grateful and respectful. We may feel moved to write a thank you note, cook a hot meal, buy flowers or a gift, contribute to a charity or sign a petition in support of our unsung heroes. We can show up for them as they show up for us, honouring that they matter and singing the praises of those who do a good job.

TURNING POINT YOUR LIFESTYLE,YOUR WELL-BEING

In a World Impacted by COVID, how can you begin to take control of your mindset in order to remain positive and focused on your goals for 2022. For almost two years the World has been disrupted by the impact of COVID 19, and for some it has been a blessing, and for others a curse. One thing is for sure, the nature of an individual’s mindset will impact on the way that this moment in time is being experienced. I started a Facebook Group called Mindset Mastery because I wanted to contribute towards helping support and inspire people to think properly during these uncertain times. I knew that fear would set in and that everything was going to change, so I set up the group on the day that Lockdown was announced in March 2020. One mindset may have dealt with the situation as an opportunity for growth, whilst the other perspective is one where the situation has affected them through mental health, stress, suffered from financial loss, family loss of life or illness and more, which has created a climate of fear.It is fear, portrayal in the media, and conflicting information surrounding COVID that leads to uncertainty and this is where mindset matters. Roy T. Bennett in his book, The Light in the Heart, says ‘Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart’. This statement is very true and relevant when you look at the painful and negative elements experienced by many around the world at the hands of COVID. However, it’s important to notice what you notice, understand your responsibilities and stay focused and driven towards your goal.

What is Mindset all about? The only thing we as individuals can control is our mind and the way we think. We have to be able to condition the mind to develop great habits that will serve an sustain us. COVID as far as we know is here to stay, so we have to learn to adapt rather than limit the necessary action

required to achieve your goals. According to the Oxford Dictionary, Mindset is defined as ‘the established set of attitudes held by someone. It has also been described as referring to ‘a person’s way of thinking’ or ‘their general attitudes and the way they typically think about things.’ That being said, a person’s mindset will be based on their beliefs, experiences and modality of the World, which will vary for a multitude of reasons.

How can you take control? You can make the necessary change now from where you stand to develop a positive mindset, that encourages you to feel good, positive, inspired and focused to take action.

Ways to Recondition Your Mindset Understanding your WHY. Know your PURPOSE and set goals with deadlines that are in alignment. Develop Self-Belief in your ability to succeed, possessing an attitude of gratitude at all times. Challenge negative beliefs. Take Responsibility for where you are now. Cultivate a Positive Environment by surrounding yourself with positive images, affirmations and stimuli that make you feel creative. Appreciate your Relationships with those nearest and dearest to you and stay away from negative people (and watch less news!) Create Positive Habits and Morning Routines by investing a minimum of 10 mins in the morning to focus on yourself. Manage Your Nutritional Intake in order to ensure you are eating the right food combinations, and that you are getting enough sleep and spending at least 30 mins daily on fitness.

sharing my story with you, drawing you into my conceptual world of alternative fashion styling and designing. As a fashionista trend setter, I will give you an insight into looking at past influences which shaped and heavily influenced me. Bringing the past back into the present with how I present myself and how I see myself being portrayed. My influences for my imagery and the role models I looked up to and admired were from the 70's and 80's. They gave me inspiration and a magical and colourful imagination which inspired my artistic flamboyant flare. I adored and idolised these icons tremendously because they captured my interest and intrigue with their own styling imagery and flamboyant uniqueness. I wanted to be like them so much, because it gave me a feeling of utopia - opening me up to a fantastic new world of colour, Glam, Punk & New Romantic Blitzkids, who were trend setters and role models in their own right.

This all made me feel united and empowered, because I realised that it was ok to be different from others which gave me a wonderful feeling of inner courage to stand out from the crowd. The people I idolised were striking iconic fashionista's, who carried their own unique individualistic sensational powerful confidence. Their bold innovative designs drew maximum impact in the visual artistry world, which heavily influenced my styling as Mark Unique Fowler.

The New Romantic movement was characterised by flamboyant, eccentric fashion inspired by fashion boutiques such as Kahn and Bell in Birmingham and PX in London. Early adherents of the movement were often referred to by the press by such names as Blitz Kids, New Dandies and Romantic Rebels. Esther’s Hacks:

So my advice to you today is this, get creative. Go back to that childlike state of curiosity and adventure. You might not always see things in your minds eye, so write it down or draw it out as best as you can. Lorem ipsum

Grab your scissors, get some tracing paper or newspaper and start cutting. Look at sites such as Pintrest where you can create your own mood boards and select different styles from across the internet, creating a new look and style. Hit the internet. You can pull up information on so many styles from different periods in time. Observe your own wardrobe – and try to style yourself from what you have in there. How can you mix things up a bit, even before you try cutting anything out.

Outfit 4: Evening dress in blue velvet and green Saturn. Fits in at waist with petticoat hooped skirt. Green silk light overcoat get creative. Go back to that childlike state of curiosity and adventure.

Get sensory about what you want. See if you can ‘feel’ into what your body wants, or close your eyes to visualise how you would like to look. Textures: Visit a material shop or even markets can be a great place to pick up material and have a feel of the different types of materials. Ask questions about the best type of material to buy for what you want to create.

Visit Charity shops – a great way to see unusual pieces and a way to purchase clothing for a fraction of the normal price, and a great way to experiment with different styles and concepts OR Even just try things on at one time. The beauty of Charity shops is that you have access to a range of styles all in one place, creating a more intimate experience and you can try on the garments as well

I got involved in another group, ‘The Shields’ who had a huge hit record called ‘You Cheated.’ I didn't make any money during that period, so I decided I was going to quit then I got involved with another group in the 50’s called ‘The Gallahads’ who’d had a top 50 record. Then there was Alan Freed, he’s supposed to be responsible for inventing Rock and Roll, which he couldn’t have done, because black people invented it but he played it on the radio. He got criticized for a lot of stuff. He’d come from New York to the West Coast to set up office and a TV show. We’d had a problem with him and he blacklisted the group. When that happened the owner of the record company who we were recording for, which was one of the biggest independent companies in Los Angeles, asked me to stay on as his A&R Director. This was because another guy who’d had the job before me had screwed up big time. He had dropped an entire album on the floor on tape which could never be put back together. This guy’s name was Bruce Johnston who got fired and I replaced him. Bruce went and joined The Beach Boys. I produced a record for the owner of the record company called ‘Those Oldies but Goodies Remind Me of You’ which was a big record but he didn't want to pay me, so I left. However, while I was there, as A&R Director I would scout for talent and I saw a band, ‘The LaLa Wilson’ band. It was an 8-piece band dressed in a uniform. They were doing choreographic steps, and playing instruments all at the same time and this is when I realized that this is what I wanted to do. I decided I wanted to start a band with three other guys. We worked in nightclubs in LA and were popular so groups would come and sit with us, then we’d hire them, make them a part of the band, split the little money we were making until eventually I had a full band. I went through some people back then. There was Captain & Tennille had a big television show. I taught him everything he knows. He was my piano player at one point. Barry White, was my drummer at one point. Al McKay was my guitar player. A lot of people came through that band and learned from that band and finally I had 9 guys. We made our first hit record which was, ‘Do Your Thing’. Before that we had a big record called, ‘Spreadin’ Honey.’ Our major records were, ‘Express Yourself’, ‘Love Land’, ‘Do Your Thing’, ‘Your Love Means Everything to Me Until You Get Enough.’ The group had 9 chartered records which I think was pretty extravagant.

Charles: My book is about the trials and tribulations my family went through in the Mississippi Delta as sharecroppers and how we were brainwashed, actually it was on the second level from slavery. My father worked at this family for almost 30 years free of charge. Every year we thought we were going to get paid and never ended up making a profit. We came close twice, but we never did. But there's so much more to this story. It's also about a cruel share cropping boss, my brother accidentally killing my sister's boyfriend. It's about my brother, Frank and I, how we fell in love with trains and about us living on one plantation that was close to the city dump, a wretched place and it’s about our escape. But you have to read to the book to really understand.

Esther: Do you feel this experience was the fire for you to become the person you are today? Charles: I don't know. I grew up with nothing. When I came to California, I couldn't afford shoes when I needed them nor could my father. But I've always done something if it was selling newspapers or working in a grocery store; I've always done something to try to sustain myself and my family, because with 12 kids in a big city it was not easy. What inspired me was being starved of my culture for so many years as a child. Being starved of our wonderful, wonderful culture that everybody in the world copies and tries to emulate and finally, I heard it at the age of 15 or 16. So I think that had a lot to do with where I am today.

Esther: What was the experience where you discovered your culture? Charles: It was like a new world opening up to me. When I first went to high school, the kids invited me to a party. I didn't know what a house party was. So I'm standing there and these kids are dancing and their feet are doing all kinds of calisthenics and I was standing with my mouth wide open because I was just mesmerized. Then they started doing a slow dance where they rubbed their bodies up against each other. Oh, man! I’d never dreamt of anything like that. So that was quite an experience for me. I wanted to be a part of it, I became a part of it and sometimes I surprised myself.

Esther: So, Charles, tell us a little bit more about your book ‘Up from Where We've Come.’

I rarely perform now. I’ve got new single out called ‘You babe’ it’s on youtube and all other channels and I spend most of my time working on my new book which maybe called ‘From the Cotton Patch to the Record Field’ or something like that. It’s about my life in show business.

Esther: Winding down Charles, if you had to give someone a piece of advice about life what would that be? Charles: Live it to the fullest because you never know when it's going to end. I’m not a very religious man but I believe in God. I’ve attended several funerals over the past year. I had a friend from Mississippi who came here to live for 20 years then decided to go back to Mississippi. He came back about two months ago and died. a young man of about 40 years.

That's why I say, live life to its fullest extent because you never know. Each day, I discover something that I never saw before and I'm thankful that I'm here today.

The one where a movement of something shifts throughout your body, lodging into your heart. The kind when my mind decides to forage its way into some memory or create some dream, she’d popped up right there. Not a cent by a long shot, more like a sparkling diamond glistening on a dark velvety canvass. A star if you will, blinking away in the heavens. I fidgeted with the memories as I walked in the cool evening. A gentle breeze caressed my body as well as my thoughts. How do you tell someone your love is way deeper than the Challenger Deep, in the Mariana Trench; or higher than the highest known mountain on Earth? How do you express that the feeling is infinite, a wonderful void which has no bottom like a black hole spinning through space? How do you manoeuvre any hurt or pain, you both have been through? Would she even believe that a man could even be able protect and serve, be that sincere, worse after everything she seen, received and been through in her own journey? I pulled my windbreaker closer around my shoulders. It wasn’t a cold but just a cool evening. Boy did I love her. One star, in the billions of stars, seemed to agree with me since a million miles above my head, it twinkled a radiant blue. My favourite colour. That was strange as no other shone like it did. A thought crept into my mind, suppose she was seeing someone else? Suppose she wasn’t ready? Suppose I was presuming, assuming, supposing…suppose I was totally wrong and all she wanted was a friend. Could that lead to anything else? I bit my bottom lip. Uncertainty was a b…. I stopped on the smooth path, trying to discern the star’s name. It escaped me, its colours like a prism, shifting from one beautiful hue to the next. Then, the inspiration came as it turned blue. Don’t stop loving. Begin with you, then her and leave it be.

I smiled.

That felt good.

The Promise Carmen stood in the garden with its evenly cut grass, manicured hedges and flowers in tidy rows. She wondered how she would keep it looking like this now that Derek was gone. Her fingers were a bright pink and wrinkled from the cold. She bent down and threw bundles of paper from the plastic crate into the blazing fire in the metal bin. She wiped the tears with the sleeve of her thin jumper. She remembered the hours that Derek had spent writing and creating stories that he had never been confident enough to share with anyone but her. “I can’t cope with going back to my job. Having the twins has really taken a toll on my mind and my body,” she said a few months after their birth. “You don’t have to.” “Are you sure?” “Look, I got my promotion, a pay rise and my regular bonus. We will be fine. You don’t have to worry about the finances either.”

Derek’s trilogy of books had caused a bidding frenzy. Money news travelled fast like a bullet train. Suddenly more family and friends came out like cockroaches crawling out of dark crevices. Her sister, Belinda kept them at bay and looked after her and the children. The advance cheque solved all the current money issues. “I just don’t get when or how they received Derek’s books.” “Who cares, you and the kids are set for life Sis,” said Belinda. “Bless you Derek,” she said giving a thumbs up. Carmen’s mobile phone rang. Her heart leapt as she saw Derek’s name appear. She looked at Belinda, with trepidation, then pressed the green accept sign on the screen. “I kept my promise, my little Ginep.” “What’s up with you. You look like you’ve just seen a ghost,” said Belinda.

“I can set up from home once the little ones start nursery”. “I promise, my little Ginep, I will take care of you and the sprogs,” he smiled and kissed her tenderly on the lips. She loved the special nickname he called her after one of his favourite fruits from back home. He was taken from them so suddenly. Carmen was still in shock. Why? He was only thirty-eight. She ripped open the letters that she found in his box file. One by one revealing debts, missed payments, void insurance policies and a second mortgage. She buried her head in her hands and wept angry tears. Her heart had been ripped out leaving a gaping hole. She marched back to the garden, the cold wind blowing on her burning cheeks. The papers she thought had been burnt earlier lay in a pile at the bottom of the metal bin. She tried to light them with the clicker but there was not a flicker or a flame. She stormed to the kitchen to get lighter fluid. When she returned the papers were gone. She opened the crate and there they were in a neat pile. She decided she would continue the following day. Her vision blurred by tears. Derek’s funeral was a sombre affair, in a church they had never attended. The pastor spoke with such passion, even Carmen believed he knew Derek. She stood stoic, numb, unable to speak. Family and friends stood in clusters at the graveside some solemn, some weeping as the coffin was lowered to the ground and hymns were sung.

How Much Wine to Order in a Restaurant: A good rule of thumb to determine how many bottles to order is to start with a half bottle per person. If the group includes at least three people, you may try ordering a bottle of red and a bottle of white.

7. Handling Utensils

8. Passing the Food

The continental table manners style prevails at all meals, formal and informal, because it is a natural, non-disruptive way to eat.

Pass to the right. One diner either holds the dish as the next diner takes some food, or he hands it to the person, who then serves herself. Any heavy or awkward dishes are put on the table with each pass. Special rules apply to passing salt and pepper and passing bread and butter.-

Hold your fork in your left hand, tines downward. Hold your knife in your right hand, an inch or two above the plate.

Passing Salt and Pepper. When asked to pass the salt, pass both

the salt and pepper.

Use your fork to spear and lift food to your mouth.

Handling Bread. If you find that the bread basket has been set close to your place setting, offer it to the table by passing it to your right. If the loaf is uncut, cut a few slices and return the loaf and slices to the basket. When slicing the bread, use the cloth in the basket to cover one end of the loaf before you grasp it.

If your knife is not needed, it remains on the table.

Toasts. When someone offers a toast to you, do not drink to yourself.

Extend your index finger along the top of the blade.

At informal meals the dinner fork may be held

tines upward, American table manners style. 85| SPRING 2022

TURNING POINT YOUR LIFESTYLE,YOUR WELL-BEING

9. Resting Utensils When you pause to take a sip of your beverage or to speak with someone, rest your utensils by placing your knife and fork on your plate near the center, slightly angled in an inverted V and with the tips of the knife and fork pointing toward each other.

10. Meals End At a formal affair, plates are removed by a professional staff. But as most informal meals are served without help, the hostess clears the plates, often with the help of a guest or two. At a family meal, members clear their own plates.

Tipping. Even if you receive a complimentary meal or wine, you should tip the staff. Base gratuities on

the estimated dollar/ pound sterling value of the complimentary meal or wine you receive. There is no need to tip the owner or proprietor of the restaurant, even if he or she serves you. You also do not need to tip the (maître d’) unless they have done a special favor or arranged a special meal for you. Problems with the Bill. If there is a problem with the bill, quietly discuss it with the waiter. If the waiter is uncooperative, excuse yourself from the table and ask to speak to the manager.

11. Departing Leaving the dining room. To signal dinner is concluded, the hostess catches the eye of the host, lays her napkin on the table, and suggests that everyone go into another room for coffee and after-dinner drinks. The hostess rises from her chair. When it's time to leave, rather than detain one's host with a lengthy good-bye, make the departure brief but cordial.

I hope that you have found these tips useful if not just as a reminder in the meantime please enjoy your Dinner parties.

Lubna S Haq is a tenacious,

determined, loving woman. Someone who loves life and who loves music and loves food just as much. She is one of those Unsung individuals who has graciously gone through life, with a strength not to give in or give-up. A woman who has lived with MS for 40 years and who has finally achieved a long-time dream The Curry Foodie website by Lubna S Haq, UK. Lubna shares her passion of cooking and making curry dishes that are a huge part of her culture. A dedication to her late mother who loved cooking, Lubna is continuing the dream and her passion and love of cooking curry. 89| SPRING 2022

You recently launched a fabulous new website called ‘Curry Foodie’. I know that this project has been a labour of love for quite a while, what is it that kept you going with your vision to finally have reached this place? When I was a teenager, I always used to help my mother in the kitchen, watching and learning how she would use different spices and foods for many dishes. The Curry Foodie website is a tribute to my mother to be remembered for her talent cooking delicious foods.

You have a love of food and cooking where does that stem from? I realised how much I loved to cook with my mother and wanted to share her recipes for others to enjoy.

TURNING POINT YOUR LIFESTYLE,YOUR WELL-BEING

What is it about curry food that inspires you? When writing up the glossary for herbs and spices, it’s was so interesting to discover how you can marry the different spices and herbs with foods to create a delicious flavour.

I see you as one of those Unsung heros, who have silently in the background been chipping away at your dream for a long time, what does it feel like to have finally bought your dream to life? I am happy to stay in the background but when you talk about food, the subject brings people together. With my husband’s encouragement and Office Innovation, the company who helped me to create Curry Foodie, my dream has come true!

What are some of the challenges you have faced to get to this place and how did you cope with them? In my late 20’s I lost my eyesight for a while, subsequently I was diagnosed with MS however, fortunately my eyesight was restored. Now, thanks to medication and exercise, 40 years later, I can carry on driving and I’m still walking, although a little slower now!

Cooking is like art, it’s creative, it’s involving, it’s a discipline, it’s a passion and it’s a love of doing what you love, what does it mean to Lubna?

cooking, for example garam masala (a mix of warming spices) are used when cooking a curry to enhance flavour however, Indian five spice (panch phoran) mix is used as a rub or when pickling vegetables, however this particular mix of spices can also be added to curries. It’s always better to use fresh herbs and spices. To prepare a good base for a curry requires cumin powder, ground coriander, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt along-with, onions, ginger, garlic, chopped tomatoes, green chillies and green coriander to garnish. Of course, the amount of chilli you add depends on how hot you like your food! These ingredients will make a good curry.

Herbs and spices obviously have health benefits as well can you share a few? The following herbs and spices have health benefits: Turmeric has anti-inflammatory qualities which can help to reduce pain and swelling for people with arthritis. Cinnamon can help to lower blood sugar levels. Garlic can protect your heart from heart disease Ginger is used as a supplement to treat digestive problems Cumin may help people to control their cholesterol level.

Is there a cardinal rule of what not to mix together when creating a curry or can someone get as creative as they wish?

When cooking curries from scratch, takes time but the satisfaction of seeing empty dinner plates after a meal and the joy that guests have enjoyed their meal, makes me very happy.

There is no cardinal rule when cooking a curry as you can mix and match ingredients to suit your taste, if you prefer a milder curry, you can add natural yoghurt to the sauce or if you like your curry to be hot, add extra green chillies.

Attending Birmingham College of Food and attaining a Master of Arts degree from the University of Birmingham which helped you research and write about your interests in Asian cuisine, how did attending this course further enhance what you already knew?

For many people cooking can be a chore, whilst similarly to many it’s a joy and love and also quite therapeutic, can you explain what cooking means to you emotionally?

Researching about spices and foods for my MA helped me develop my knowledge further, discovering how spices can also help greatly with your health.

What is the importance of good herbs and spices in a curry and is there a base from which all curries are created from? It’s important to use the right spices for the food you are

90| SPRING 2022

I don’t see cooking as a chore, in fact when I’m in the kitchen, I also listen to music which really makes me feel very happy. When the meal is served, I feel good and satisfied that the meal is being enjoyed.

What is the long-term vision you have for Curry Foodie? My long term vision for Curry Foodie would be for people who enjoy, cooking and eating Indian food, to be able to learn to cook from Chefs as well. On the Curry Foodie website, Chef Monisha Bharadwaj has a cookery school and offers cookery courses.

Your late mother was instrumental in inspiring both you and your sister Shereen. She was an incredible cook, a great hostess who loved to entertain. What quality or attributes do you feel you’ve taken from the inspiration that your mother was? My Mother was a huge inspiration and passed on her love for cooking, hosting dinner parties and to entertain her guests. I love doing all of that too!

What to you does UNSUNG mean/Are the virtues of being UNSUNG? Being ‘unsung’ for me is giving up your time to do good work and not to expect any recognition or reward for doing so.

A good saying to live by in life is:

My name is Abigail Roscoe. I'm an autistic and physically disabled illustrator, who recently completed my Bachelor's degree in illustration and animation. I'm Canadian/Mexican, and moved to Europe for my Bachelor's degree in Illustration and Animation and will be returning to Canada in the near future. Recently, I wrote and illustrated my first book, Yuka’s Way Home. To work on this book, I travelled to Northern Norway to work directly with the Sami reindeer herders featured in my book. Through this book, I was discovered by a Caribou Conservation Breeding Foundation, an organisation in Canada. I am now living out my dream of being able to make artwork that also bene-fits animal conservation, as I illustrate educational material for CCBF to help raise awareness about caribou, their land and the species that benefit from their conservation too.

was a difficult year to stay moti-vated with the circumstances in the world around us, and then the personal issues that arose certainly didn't make that any easier. But I had to keep going, and make something new- and so I did. I began working on several new stories and book ideas which I am excited about, and I can't wait to illustrate these books and get them out into the world. Subjects for upcoming books include animal conservation and education, Indi-genous stories, autism self love, invisible disabilities, a fantasy story, and a scary cryptid mystery book for older kids. Since then, I've gotten a Publisher for my second book I wrote, which is about Mexican Otomí Indigenous hand crafts, and has a publishing date for 2024. Until then, I plan on working on more of my own titles, and to continue finding inspiration through what I love the most, nature, and the amazing creatures and stories that surround us. Unfortunately, I received some life altering news regarding my diagnosis right after I launched my campaign for my book, and right before graduating. My constant pain and loss of mobility finally had an answer and a diagnosis. I knew what was going on in my body, and that was a relief. But with this diagnosis also came a grieving period, this pain wasn't a temporary problem that would hopefully go away, but rather a chronic, constant condition that is here to stay. Needless to say, this grief was a lot to cope with. Dealing with the loss of my health which at some point in my life I took for granted was a process that forced me to look at my stress and life in a different way. I grieved what I lost, but I am thankful for what I have. It

I have been on quite a journey through life, and two of the most important lessons I felt I learned about life were that under any circumstance, you need to remain kind. People need to be trusted, but you must always rely on yourself and your strengths. When I was married my husband didn’t allow me to work. I was looking after our child, working to pass my driving test, to pass exam “Life in the UK” and I also went to college for English classes. I was a ‘stay at home Mum’ and also busy with house decoration. My husband at that time didn’t want me to work. That’s why I started 99| SPRING 2022

I managed to get back on my feet after my divorce. However, it was difficult because I had a child on my own. So I rushed into job hunting and it turned out that being a single mum, without experience, it was almost impossible to get a job. That’s when I remembered about the beginning of my career in photography. So I moved to a different area and started my life from zero. My first experience was working as a wedding assistant for the photographer David Pearson (@ davidpearson4382 - Instagram) for which I am immensely grateful to. I really like to shoot female portraits, fashion and children. My favourite locations are flower glades, lavender and the sea. I also discovered the world of fashion and began attending Fashion shows in London as a photographer. It’s very interesting meeting new people. This is how I kept my dreams and spirit alive. My favourite model, Snizhana, has helped me realize my creative plans. She is always open to new ideas and ready to come to any location to do a photoshoot, which is very important. We have already done a lot of photo shoots and have many more projects that we will be working on. Two years ago I cooperated with make-up artist Curbet Cristina, the outcome of our project was published in 3 different European magazines. My words of inspiration to others would be this. No matter how difficult the situation, there is always a solution. You need to have a dream and go after it, and if you don’t have the strength, then crawl and if you don’t have the strength to do this, lie in the direction of the dream. I would love to take photos for your readers. There has never been a better time to support each other and each other’s businesses as we go through this world situation. It would be big pleasure to capture your event or create wonderful memories with my photoshoots. This is more than business to me, this is my life. So why not book a photo session with me. You will not be disappointed.

The Wonders of the Human Race as Unsung Heros It is said, His Holiness the Dalai Lama considers the following prayer to be the source for developing altruism in your character. What speaks to me in this prayer is we are all called to be an unsung hero.

Bodhisattva Prayer for Humanity “May I be a guard for those who need protection A guide for those on the path A boat, a raft, a bridge for those who wish to cross the flood May I be a lamp in the darkness A resting place for the weary A healing medicine for all who are sick A vase of plenty, a tree of miracles And for the boundless multitudes of living beings May I bring sustenance and awakening Enduring like the earth and sky Until all beings are freed from sorrow And all are awakened.” Shantideva, Indian Buddhist sage 700 A.D. And all are awakened…

I love this sentence. How do you interpret these words? Is awakened a feeling? When you awaken to a fact for example; of an injustice being done to a neighbour, what do you do? Do you move with compassion in action and see how you can support and give any 106| SPRING 2022

inner gifts you may have to ease suffering? You think it. You feel it. You do it. You don’t wait for someone to tell you not to draw with chalk on the sidewalk. You draw a large amusing picture because you want to bring joy to workers who pound pavement, who sing songs inside themselves perhaps no one, has heard. So many people in the world are unsung, and I know this is a good thing. Let me tell you more. There have been, countless visionaries, around the world who have devoted their lives to the evolution of consciousness. There are many living now, many who have inspired my life choices and my personal evolution. I am grateful I do not have to climb the mountain by myself. Unsung heroes enrich the seeds in our souls and they do not ask for anything in return—perhaps except—to mimic their altruism. Who else wants altruism to be the radiating face of the new normal? Altruism is a kind of membership within the human race, wherein anyone can belong. Magnificent! Isn’t it wonderful groups of unsung hero’s are now converging to balance out multiple crises we are all facing on the planet? So much tragedy requires collective solutions, and it is by gathering and working together in groups we can dream more concretely and shuffle into a place within the “new life”, that is now here.

REVIEWS Royale Roots Review

In these days of so many ingredients listed on the back of haircare products, it's hard to keep track of what is going into your body, but all Royale Roots products are handmade with care. Royale Roots provided three hair care products for me to try out. These products were the Black Soap Shampoo, Butter Blend, and Hibiscus Deep Conditioner.

My hair felt so clean and smelt amazing after using the Black Soap Shampoo. After taking out a protective style that I had in my hair for a couple of weeks, the shampoo helped me to remove built-up hair products and gel. When I use my usual shampoo, my hair feels quite dry, however, after using the Black Soap Shampoo, my hair felt soft and cleansed. In addition to using the shampoo, I deep conditioned my hair with the Hibiscus Deep Conditioner, which smelt amazing and helped me to detangle my hair.

As soon as I had my hair washed and conditioned, I conditioned it further using the Butter Blend hair butter. This product helped to combat my dry and itchy scalp that is a result of eczema. Butter Blend was my favourite product. I hate feeling my hair too greasy and weighed down by products, but this product was the right consistency for me. Butter blend is a multipurpose product that can also be used to massage into the scalp as well as applied to the hair as a hot oil treatment. Besides being enriched with vitamins and minerals, this hair butter also contains antioxidants, which are great for your hair. Royale Roots haircare products are totally natural, handmade, vegan-friendly, and organic so you do not have to worry about what you are putting in your hair. Many haircare products list a multitude of ingredients on the back but 100% of Royale Roots' products are natural.

Ba Humbug: The Bore of Christmas School Concerts by Aunt Gertrude As soon as September arrives, Christmas Adverts are all over the place much to my annoyance. There is the constant bombardment of ‘buy, buy, buy’ trying to get people to part with their hard earned money to spend on all sorts of nonsense like Mr Bumblebee the Turtle Body Scrub or Barbie the LGBTQMTF who can grow a beard, a penis and breasts at the same time targeted at your pre-pubescent teenager. Once upon a time for adults, you’d have the usual handkerchief and boxer shorts or Marks and Expensives nightie, fluffy slippers and dressing gown. Now everybody’s got their face in their phone looking for gifts on TikTok, Snapchat, SnapBack, HackThat, BiteThat etc. Advertising has become so innovative that at times it just doesn’t make sense, or I can’t see any correlation between the product and the advert. So for example there’s TikTok adverts selling face products about Face Make-overs, whilst Grandpa sings an R Kelly Song and Grandma prances around in a negligee. Or there’s Barnaby the greyhound dressed up as Sinbad-the-Sailor selling Vegan nut cookies for squirrels, or there’s Make-up Face Kits with pin on Star Trek Ears, and glue on eyebrows made out of bats wings, while everybody sings ‘I’m stuck on you’– this is the new and present craze of gifting. It was obvious that the Christmas season would be upon us when kids could be seen lugging an assortment of instruments on their backs, into school daily. Their little bulbous eyes peering out from under trombones, bass guitars or keyboards. There’d be endless afternoons of practice before school, during lunch time and after school in the silent, freezing school hall.

Children snivelling and wiping snot from their noses, scrunching it up and flinging it at the walls. Or there

were those uncultivated ones, who needed a kick in the head because they’d then put snot in their mouths chewing as if it was bun and cheese. If that was my child, I’d wait until they got home, put cayenne pepper and a scotch bonnet in their burger, give them a drink of hot chocolate laced with a sedative and send them swiftly to bed, the nasty little critter. The Scotch bonnet would burn their fingers and mouths and when they went to wipe their eyes, it would sting the ????? out of them. Maybe next time they’d think about grabbing a tissue. So once practice was finished and The Little People were released home acting like savages because they were starving as hyenas, practise would once again commence until bedtime. By then the neighbours could be heard screaming like deranged skunks, banging down our wall to ‘top dat noise.’ These were times, that I’d want to unleash Bruce-the-Killer-Cat in their back garden. Bruce was a big heavy ugly looking mean son of a gun.

We tried to send Bruce to an Animal Shelter but she found her fat arse back home. We’ll never understand how she made the 50 mile journey back home in under two weeks. She was fat, but she was brisk and as sharp as a whistle and could do cat back flips and all sorts. So grandma wasn’t lying about teaching her martial arts then we surmised! We also tried to send her to Battersea Dog’s Home, but she got kicked out because she put a reign of terror on its inmates. Anyways, I digress!!

I remember as a child, I was good at performing. My parents used to look forward to watching ‘Little Esther’ on stage doing her thing. However, I’m not sure I’m that sort of parent. I’d have nightmares about my child prior to their Christmas Concert. Of my child up on stage standing there as bold as a Peacock, in the limelight, grinning like something out of Star Trek (the tooth fairy obviously had paid them a visit). Standing in an outfit that looked as if it had been designed by midgets with hooves. As the dream progressed, I’d break out in a cold sweat as My Little 114| SPRING 2022

Person started to open his mouth to sing. That was when the dream would end rather abruptly. Thank God, the moon, the stars, Allah, Yahweh. Seriously you ain’t done heard my chile sing. Even his grandmother walks out the room when he opens his mouth and yes, with our rum bottle in her hand. But I digress again!! The Night of The School Concert So, there I’d be seated in the front row waiting, waiting, bored witless from smiling politely at everyone, waiting for my Little Person’s Christmas Concert to begin. I had to be in the front row because if Little Person didn’t see me sitting right up front, smiling and grinning as if I really meant it, there’d be pouting and sulking and the throwing of tantrums and I know that I’d have a really hard time keeping my cool, if he reacted this way. I might somehow loose my humanity and want to drop kick my Little Person in the forehead. So , yes, I opted to get there early, to grab front row seat, and to pretend that I was really, really interested. Every proud parent would be there with their camcorder or camera. However, I didn’t have neither. There had been more important things that I’d needed to purchase and a camera had not been one of them. So I would be reduced to doing the cheap and tacky thing of “hi..um…..I’m Ashley’s mum can you take a few pictures of my son and I’ll pay for them by Postal Order. Sorry don’t have cash – had takeout last night.” After being looked at as if I was Scrooge’s mother, I’d get a nod of pity with a ‘sure thing Miss Austin.’

about to begin. Parents would be sitting looking excited, talking animatedly to each other, some making polite trivial chit chat whilst others, like me, would not be talking at all. Just sitting there with my gaze fixed firmly on the front of the stage, so that no-one – parent, teacher nor child - could catch my eye and to communicate. I wasn’t having it. I just wanted to clap a few times, sigh – ‘that’s my son’ and then leg it home. It wasn’t that I wasn’t sociable, but the types of conversations I overheard were not ones that interested me. Besides, I’m not sure I’d be able to keep a straight face straight or my mouth shut by not offending someone. I was hearing nonsense like ‘so how much did Little Tommy weigh when he was born?’ I surmised that Little Tommy was the one playing one of the donkeys in the play and he sure looked as if he had been a couple of stones when he was born. Then there was ‘I’m still breast-feeding my little pumpkin, it keeps us bonded.’ I looked over at this particular mother with my one good eye and noted how thin she looked. She needed to be whipped with a cow’s tail – the mother that is. Didn’t she realise by now that her child had teeth and was walking and talking?Every parent understandably was proud as punch. Waiting for their budding star to come on stage and show them up…sorry I mean…to show them what they were made of.

Then it was time. The Concert was

Each parent shared a description of their little cherubim, so that others could identify them, and join in the waving pandemic. I remember looking up as one of the Little People decided to run on stage to wave hello to mummy dearest. There she was, his mummeee standing up and waving like she was doing the Mexican Wave, pointing exciting at her little person, who looked like Mr Bean, (Well he did to me..oops it was a she..a girl..my bad) wearing an elves outfit. Hmm…elves in a manger? I quite liked the innovation! Hopefully God would see the funny side of things and not send the whole stage up in flames, for what could be perceived as blasphemy – elves in a manger indeed! It was time for the Little People to troop onto the stage. Like proud soldiers dressed in a ridiculous array of clothing to the click of the camera and the roll of the camcorder. (Oh how cynical you must think I am – I was tired, hungry and bored so leave me alone.) Santa looked like a cross between a rhino and somebody’s body parts. Mary looked like a reindeer dressed as a nun and Joseph looked like he had walked out of a morgue– Good Lord, didn’t English parents know about creaming their chile’s skin? Parents would now be waving at their Little People, and so was I, whilst thinking about all the other things I could be doing tonight, rather than to sit and watch another boring, dry arsed Christmas play. I’d been here before with my eldest son, so by the time I got around to my second child, the novelty of attending these events had long worn off. A parent nudged me, pointing excitedly at his Little Person who was playing Baby Jesus AGAIN appeared like a phantom on stage. Of course he was just being a proud daddy, and I obliged by waving at Baby Jesus whilst thinking how times had changed. A baby was a baby was a baby no matter where in the world you went. However, and maybe this was a show about invention and innovation – this baby Jesus looked as if he should be playing Cesar or Pontius Pilot. There was nothing cute, small nor endearing about this child and

he had a permanent scowl. But I felt I had to quieten myself as indeed this was somebody’s chile and I was acting like Scrooge and Cruella De’Ville all at once. As the show progressed, I could feel the hairs up my nose stand on end. What manner of claptrap was this? as another Christmas Carol ended. By now my head was buzzing, my eardrums knocking against my eyeballs (it felt like that) as the Little People started up yet another brain splitting melody. However, I managed to put on a smile and applauded with all the other brainwashed parents. I even managed to arise from whence I was sitting, to shouts of “Well done, Well Done.” I was then further distressed and perturbed by a continuous deafening holler behind me. I turned around to glare at the father in question, who had chosen to shout directly into my already distressed eardrums. I surmised he was the father of the one that was dressed like a pixie. Who was he anyway – one of the disciples? a lampshade? What was a pixie doing in the manger for heaven’s sake? Anyway, I surmised he was the father of this child as both himself and child had the same elongated pixie ears and cleft chin. I was about to react to his hollering, but the play was now in full swing, so I gave him a raised eyebrow, one that my mother used to use on me, and left him standing. There would be more singing and dancing and ooing and ahhing and holding the hand over heart with tears in eyes, at symbolically silly things like ‘Hello ladiz and Gentallmenz, My name is Joseph.’ At this point the said mother of the said child would leap to her feet, more tears in eyes – her middle name must’ve been ‘Niagra Falls’ or ‘Bust a Cloud’ or something like that because she had been crying from the time she had come in, blowing kisses and shouting his name over and over and over again. Once again I could feel annoyance rise in me and I seriously began to wonder what had happened to my Christmas Spirit. I really must

work on my level of tolerance and learn to humble my miserable-self because I didn’t want to get kicked out from this event. As much as I was being a complete Scrooge and bored witless, I still wanted my mince pie and cinnamon eggnog at the end. Then it was my son’s turn to grab his five minutes of fame. He was playing..um…..Humpty Dumpty? Hmmmmm! and what in the world was he wearing? It certainly wasn’t the outfit I had been working on for the last three months. Actually it was but when had he grown so much? He looked as if he was wearing suspenders. I was in shock for a moment, my shame could not have been more palpable, as I turned red and my breath caught in my throat. The parent next to me leaned over in concern. I heard them asking through my haze of shame if I was ok. I nodded grimly, putting my hand over my heart, closing my eyes and focussing on my breathing. No drama please I whispered, just need to take a moment. But back to my flesh and blood playing Humpty Dumpty? WTF. What The Frankenstein? I thought this was a Christmas Play, not some flipping freak show. And then he started waving at me. By now everyone had turned around to look at me, with pride. ‘Ahh is that your boy?’ one asked. I didn’t’ want to admit it – as I continued to look at his state of attire. How could I admit that he was my son? I wanted to kick everyone who was looking at me, in the head and throw a flare in the midst of the audience. BLACK OUT. So that I could run. But, I humbled my tail, thanked each one of the smiling faces and waved back at my…son…through gritted teeth and thought – ‘I ain’t asking nobody to take any more pictures of my son, my memories would have to suffice.’ Anyway his moment of fame wasn’t that short, as I’d hoped. He actually had quite a long part in the play, well he was on stage for the whole of the play much to my distress. I tried to divert my eyes from looking at him, my poor, poor baby, standing there like a dumb assed Easter egg. At least they could’ve given MY CHILD a better role –he could’ve been an armed guard, or a bale of hay – anything would’ve been more respectful. How could I

share this with my family? His aunts and uncles would have him up on snapchat and Instagram and on TikTok, and it would be an International Scandal for us all. Anyway, an hour later, half comatose from boredom as Mary, Joseph and the Donkey tottered off stage to massive applause, I drew a sigh of relief. The Little People came back on stage for their final curtain call….for the flipping fifth time. I drew a sign of relief and gladly got up to clap and holla and whistle AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN until I had knee ache. Every flipping time I sat down, there would be another curtain call. The show wasn’t that flipping good. All I wanted to do now was to hug my son, more out of pity than anything else, grab my mince pie and eggnog and head home for a strong beer, whiskey and red wine lethal cocktail mix. I wanted to have a headache, to clear the headache I already had.So after pictures were taken of them on stage The Little People emerged into the hall, and the festivities continued. There were more Christmas Carols, snacks and nibbles and hearty congratulations and even the giving of presents. Lots of stuff from Mr Patel’s £1 shop – buy one get six free……All made in China and Flammable I suppose. Anyway, wasn’t it the thought the counted? We left and went home. Upon opening the front door his father asked…so how did it go? How did my budding actor perform tonight? I was already vex with my child’s father for not showing up, AGAIN to support his son at a school event, and he still hadn’t cooked dinner – he said he would. He never showed up, just a lot of talk. I had so much to do - like finish watching Netflix, The series ‘The Woman who Murdered her Lover with a Rolling Pin.’ You can imagine that I was not a happy bunny or maybe egg. The boy’s father tried to kiss me, asking why I looked so vex. The next day when my child’s father finally opened his eyes, he was still lying on the floor in the passage way, where I’d decked him the night before. You’ve heard the story about the woman scorned right? So on that note, I’m planning my summer holiday next year in the run up to Christmas. I can watch my Little Person’s Christmas Play from my phone, or ipad, or on zoom or youtube. This way I can stop it whenever it gets too painful to watch my Little Cherub make a fool of himself and press rewind when the pain diminishes.
