THE MARRIAGE PORTRAIT BY MAGGIE O’FARRELL

O’Farrell’s Hamnet was a huge global success and won nearly every literary award there is. Her latest offering is an imagining of the life of Lucrezia de Medici. Lucrezia was the daughter of the two most powerful people in Italy in the 16th Century, and the inspiration for Robert Browning’s famous poem, My Last Duchess. When her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding to Alfonso, ruler of Ferrara, Moderna and Regio, Lucrezia is offered as his bride instead. However, despite her young age, Lucrezia’s only role is to provide a male heir for Alfonso. If she can’t do that, her life could be in danger. O’Farrell does more than provide a well-researched historical novel. She brings Lucrezia de Medici to life.
