WHITE PUEBLO WONDERS

There are 7,582 villages in Spain with populations so depleted they wouldn’t fill the press seats at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu soccer stadium. Abandoned in the post-Franco goldrush to tourism jobs on the Costas, you could argue until the goats come home over which has the most splendid castle, prettiest plaza de la iglesia or tastiest tapas. Yet a mere 105 live up to the scrutiny of Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España, a non-profit association set up in 2010 to promote these tiny national treasures under a badge of tourism excellence.

The Cave Village SETENIL DE LAS BODEGAS, CÁDIZ

Hobbit fans will adore this quirky troglodyte village with its one-of-a-kind ‘cave’ high street, squashed between a rock and a hard place like the filling in a sandwich. Hiding out in a limestone ravine spliced by the Río Trejo 15km north of Ronda, the pueblo clusters around a row of galleries gouged out by the river into a Flintstone’s commercial centre where you can drink, eat and shop.

Before they got doors and windows these caves were,

chronologically, handy homes for early humans, olive and almond stores for Romans and Moors and wine cellars for the Spanish, when Setenil proudly added de las Bodegas to its title. Although it was pretty proud already: Setenil, from the Latin ‘septem nil’ (seven times nothing), refers to the number of times the Moorish town held out against Christian invasion before it was reconquered. Phyloxeria saw off most of the wineries but you can still enjoy a local glass to pair with Setenil’s signature chorizo sausages and home-made pastries – if you can find a table. Tourists come by the busload for Instagram snaps of bars snuggled into the cliff

face with olive groves growing on top of them. And rain or shine, in Calle Cuevas del Sol or Cuevas de la Sombra on the shady side of the river, you won’t need a parasol or a brolly thanks to the stone-age toldos above your head!

DON’T LEAVE WITHOUT…

Z Hiking up to the ruined castle via streets named after goatherds, blacksmiths, soap-makers and sock-makers.

Z A bottle of Principe Alfonso de Hohenlohe. The late German prince who founded Marbella retreated in his latter years to a magnificent cortijo on the village outskirts to make wine. His Bodega Las Monjas is Setenil’s last winery keeping tradition alive. ›

The Castle Pueblo CASTELLAR DE LA FRONTERA, CÁDIZ

A concrete church bell tower of Brutalist design is often the first impression visitors get of ‘medieval Castellar’ when they take a wrong turn and end up in the new town where most of the 3,000 inhabitants live. The original village is on top of a hill 10km away: a pueblo blanco hiding inside a 13th century Moorish castle where you can relive days of old when knights were bold – with better facilities.

This frontier fortress saw plenty of Moors v Christians action in its time but only 133 residents call their home the castle today. Many are offspring of 1970s German hippies who rolled up to the abandoned village in their battered Mercs to live alternatively.

The expensively repointed stone battlements enclose casas rurales you can rent, a handful of artisan shops and bars and a hotel built into the walls whose archery slits

provide nests for falcons, kites and kestrels. The jaw-dropping panorama stretches across cork forests, stork nests and a turquoise reservoir to Gibraltar.

La Almoraima, Castellar’s third population nucleus, grew up around the cork industry and numbers 200 residents today. The largest private estate in Spain until it was expropriated by the government (along with the castle) in the infamous Rumasa Fraud Case; Mexican actress Salma Hayek’s billionaire husband tried to buy it. Ultimately absorbed into the natural park, from La Almoraima’s tiny Victorian station you can ride a British-built railroad to Ronda.

The Berber Village PAMPANEIRA GRANADA

Locals joke that it gets so cold in winter even the chimneys sport scarves. And at a nippy 1,000 metres above sea level with snowy views of the Sierra Nevada, they might have a point.

Jarapas, the brightlycoloured woven rugs and crocheted blankets that decorate the curious conical chimneys and double as shade sails in Plaza de la

Libertad church square are a tradition handed down by Moorish refugees who fled to the hills after the Reconquest of Granada six centuries ago. Back then, they planted mulberries, harvested worms and wove silk.

The flat-roofed houses are also typical of mountain villages in the Alpujarras where the way of life owes more to the Berber villages

of the Atlas Mountains visible on the horizon. Day trippers flock from Granada to marvel at the irrigation channels in the streets and walk the ‘tinaos’ and ‘terraos’ – slate-covered porches supported by chestnut timbers connecting the houses, which provide shade and easier access over the rooftops to the farm terraces.

Half a dozen civilisations including the Greeks have fallen in love with the shape of Mojácar, a symmetrical cubist village standing out on the hilltop in blinding-white contrast to its barren setting.

Edging the Tabernas badlands of Europe’s only desert where it either never rains or it pours, Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef were among the first ‘tourists’ to prop up a bar, in between shoots on Sergio Leone’s 1960s spaghetti western movies whose one-horse-town

film sets are a popular day-trip.

Meanwhile, a group of well-heeled hippies were being blown away by the virgin beachfront 2km from the village doorstep. Taking up the mayor’s offer of free development land, and Indalo Man (from nearby cave paintings) as their logo, they spent a fistful of dollars turning the 17km strip into Mojácar Playa.

Today the good, the bad and the ugly head to the swinging but relatively low-rise beach resort and the 600 pueblocinos mostly benefit. Puffing up the charming-but-challenging streets to where the castle

once stood for stupendous views, with a refreshment pit stop in pretty Plaza Nueva on the way down, is a rite of passage for most visitors. Although, thanks to thoughtful underground car parking and an outdoor lift, there’s no need for all that effort!

Back down on earth, if you prefer your beaches without banana boats and jet skis, a 20-minute drive brings you to the rocky coves and Perrierclear waters of the Cabo de Gato Nature Reserve.

DON’T LEAVE WITHOUT… Z Picnicking at Playa de los Muertos. There are no beach facilities and it’s a 15-minute hike from the car park carrying your gear. But it’s worth it!

The Foodie Mecca VEJER DE LA FRONTERA, CÁDIZ

A winner of more beauty contests than Miss Venezuela, Vejer’s vertiginous streets are swept daily, potted geraniums flower perennially and householders get an annual whitewash inspection from the town hall. Shops are artisan ateliers, tapas are ‘de autor’, hotels are chic and boutique and the indoor farmers market sports Ralph Lauren wallpaper.

Beneath the chocolate box packaging, vestiges of Vejer’s five centuries of Islamic rule are everywhere to see – in the tiled minarets of its former mosques, the Arabesque curves of its archways and the wide planes

of La Janda where the Moorish conquest of Spain began in 711. The view from the battlements across orchards, pastures and sherry towns to the Atlantic which churns with blue fin tuna in spring reveals the delicatessens on the doorstep. Vejer is famed for its cutting edge gastronomy and lists over 100 restaurants and bars on Trip Advisor.

The famous 1805 Battle of Trafalgar is also connected with Vejer, whose villagers cared for the wounded – a reminder that the wide white windsurfing beaches of the Costa de la Luz are only 10km away.

Vejer’s virtues are sophisticated for a village of 13,000 people, extending to a modern theatre, a flamenco centre and a calendar of festivals that keeps it buzzing

from Carnival in February to the autumn wine harvest, after which it turns a bit quiet. But you can make merry with sherry every day of the year.

Artworks pop up everywhere

A life-size sculpture of a man in a hat with a suitcase waiting at the bus stop at the entrance to Genalguacil is a whimsical introduction to this artist’s enclave in Malaga’s green Genal Valley. Spitefullooking cat sculptures perch on terracotta roofs bordering the church square and a fountain gushes water through the mouths of three comical mules.

Since 1994, Genalguacil has thrown open its sky-blue doors to an art biennial during the first fortnight in August, attracting painters and sculptors from all over Europe who set up their easels and potters wheels for a working holiday at town hall expense. Their oeuvres are their

legacy, installed in the streets and exhibited at the very grand (for a tiny village) Fernando Centeno López Museum of Contemporary Art.

Genaguacil’s population of 600 swells by 10,000 visitors over this frenetic fortnight although, with only a handful of tourist lodgings and places to eat, they are mostly daytrippers. It’s all good news for one of the most isolated and depopulated villages in the province, reached along a wilfully windy road that finished in a dirt track less than a decade ago.

The route weaves through forests of chestnut and rare pinsapo pine, hairpinning down to the wild river beaches of the Genal before the final ascent to the village, 500 metres

above sea level in golden eagle territory. With improved roads, the journey from Estepona is one of the best parts of the trip.

DON’T LEAVE WITHOUT…

Z Trying rabbit stew; photographing raptors in flight; wild swimming in Europe’s cleanest river.

Z Enjoying the chestnut season when prickly husks litter the road like hedgehogs and the cuisine is to go nuts for. e

THEPUERTOOCCIDENTAL BANÚS ADDS GLITZ AND GLAMOUR TO THE COAST

The PYR Hotel has always been a classic establishment in Puerto Banús owing to it location and proximity to major shopping and gastronomic offerings on the Port. In July, 2022, it was purchased by Barceló Hotel Group and rebranded as the Occidental Puerto Banús Hotel. This Group, founded in 1931 in Mallorca, boasts over 250 hotels and more than 55,000 rooms in 22 countries. It is the second-largest hotel chain in Spain and one of the 30 most important in Europe. Its hotels are marketed under four brands: Barceló, Royal Hideaway, Occidental, and Allegro. In Andalucía alone, the Group runs 25 hotels in the provinces of Huelva, Cádiz, Málaga, Almería, Sevilla, and Granada.

THE ESSENTIAL GOODNESS OF SIMPLICITY

The Occidental brand, of which the new hotel is now part, is focused on ‘easy living hotels’, which are based on the peace and comfort of guests, and excellent service from staff. Its values are trustworthiness, simplicity, and empathy. The client comes first, without excuses. This makes sense considering the fact that most modern tourists travel not only to get to know a new city or coastal area but also to work on aspects such as their health and wellbeing. ›

IT’S ALL ABOUT LOCATION

The Barceló Hotel Group was attracted by the idea of completely transforming the PYR and converting it into the Occidental, owing in no small part to its location. Puerto Banús is close to a myriad of golf courses, ports, beaches, and picturesque white villages. The Hotel is, therefore, a good choice for golfers, families, couples, and friends, since there

is so much to do, even within Puerto Banús itself. Casino Marbella is just an 800m walk away. The closest beaches to the hotel are Playa Nueva Andalucía (350m away), Playa de Puerto Banús (at 500m) and Playa Río Verde (one km away). The Plaza de Antonio Banderas, the urban heart of Puerto Banús, meanwhile, is a threeminute walk from the Hotel. ›

LIGHT-FILLED INTERIORS

The Occidental has 291 spacious, well-lit rooms with convenient features like a small kitchen, relaxation zone, and terrace. They are modern and youthful in their design and are graced in neutral hues like beige, cream, and grey. The sliding terrace doors are sizeable, meaning that light floods into every corner, adding to the joy and cosiness that abounds. The Hotel is also home to two exterior pools (one of which is a kids’ pool), with an ample

deck for catching a few rays. Finally, it offers guests parking, which is particularly handy when you visit in the summer.

THINGS TO DO NEARBY

Because Puerto Banús is so close to Marbella, guests are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to the gamut of activities they can take part in. The Old Town of Marbella is around 7km away and is perfect for a romantic meal out and some boutiquestyle shopping. Puerto Banús itself has an

enviable range of restaurants and luxury shopping, with Muelle Ribera being home to shops like Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton among many others. There is a host of fun activities for people who love nature and adventure. Snorkelling, horseriding, diving, cycling, walking, and windsurfing are just a few of the many choices if you like staying active while you’re on holiday.

CULINARY OFFERINGS

The hotel has various restaurants to entice guests, including

Arrozante – the ideal spot for lovers of rice in its wide variety of forms. If Italian food is more to your fancy, then make your way to La Dolce Vita, which serves traditional Italian and Mediterranean fare. Some families enjoy staying by the pool all day. They can usually be found tucking into delights from Breeze Gastro Bar Piscina, which serves simple, local dishes that bear the influence of new culinary trends and healthy cuisine.

The BBC News has reported on some of the most momentous happenings in the world

The BBC World Service long connected different parts of the British Empire, just as its news reels united Great Britain during the Second World War and helped give it resolve in difficult times. The motto, to ‘inform, educate and entertain’ has served as the inspiration for 100 years of sometimes dramatic news and sports coverage, television programmes, and also a variety of radio services both localised and international.

TV coverage later also added a regional tone, while the BBC became an international source of information and entertainment that today broadcasts in 28 languages.

MEMORABLE BROADCASTING

In the early days of programming, the BBC helped to popularise radio plays and later radio music

broadcasts, with the Royal Christmas Message becoming a longstanding tradition that is maintained today, and the wartime period marked by rousing patriotic newsreels and 33 major wartime speeches by Winston Churchill. By then, early television coverage had begun, and it was to form the basis for three quarters of a century of memorable productions that have spanned the 1950s to the present day.

In 1960, five years after the introduction of commercial competition in the form of ITV, the BBC moved into the Television Centre at White City, a site that would be its headquarters for 53 years, until the opening of the new Broadcasting House in 2013. The studios within the Television Centre complex would produce some of the most iconic

programmes not just in the UK, but internationally, including radio shows such as The Archers and Desert Island Discs, and the television classics Blue Peter and Doctor Who Successive generations of teenagers were glued to the TV for Top of the Pops, which chronicled several decades of music trends, while for grown-ups such programmes as Morecombe & Wise, Faulty Towers, Grange Hill and later also Eastenders became a form of constancy in a changing world. That said, the BBC has been quick to change with the times over the past three decades, and now works hard to make its productions politically correct and inclusive, as well as socially focused, as in the case of Comic Relief, and the highly popular Strictly Come Dancing ›

If you’ve ever watched a film like Grease, The Outsiders, or Cinema Paradiso in a drive-in theatre, then you know that this experience offers a unique sense of elation, freedom, and excitement. The food, ambience, people, and starry night sky all take on a protagonism that is absent in the far-more-staid world of indoor cinema. Those who are there for the movie can keep their eyes glued to the enormous screen while munching on popcorn and sipping on a drink. Meanwhile, teens and adults who are into mingling can meet at the food area.

Having grown up in Australia and caught films like Gallipoli (Peter Weir, 1982) in a drive-in, in my adult years I

missed the sense of fun and independence that outdoor cinema guaranteed. I was, therefore, over the moon when I learned that Autocine Málaga Metrovacesa, the second largest drive-in theatre in Europe, had opened in October last year. The entrepreneurs behind the project, Tamara Istambul and Cristina Porta, launched their first drive-in five years ago (Autocine Madrid) and they have an ambitious plan to expand throughout the province of Andalucía.

AN IMPRESSIVE 16,000 M2 OF FUN

Autocine Málaga, which is located at the Polígono Industrial Guadalhorce, measures 16,000m2 and boasts a gigantic 250m2 screen, a

250-vehicle capacity, and 200 additional seats in front of the screen for those who prefer to enjoy their movies ‘Cinema Paradiso-style’. That’s the whole fun of Autocine Málaga: you don’t even need a car to enjoy an evening under the stars. › Good times at Rita’s Night

WHAT WILL YOU FIND AT AUTOCINE MÁLAGA

METROVACESA?

Set aside the whole day to enjoy this venue to the full. The full gamut of experiences to opt for include:

Z Film Projections

Z In the drive-in area, you can catch newly released movies that are also showing in conventional cinemas. However, Autocine also has a host of special film cycles focusing on genres like children’s cinema, horror, and classic cinema. The latter is a big hit with audiences, as it comprises films you could watch a million times over – think Grease or Dirty Dancing! To see what’s on, check out the company’s website and

buy tickets online or at the venue. The venue has been celebrating a music festival that started in September and will end in midOctober, when the new cinematic season will commence once again.

Z You can simply programme the sound through your car radio, choosing Spanish or Original Version audio. In the summer, you can enjoy the film in the seating area. Another popular area is the restaurant zone, where you can have a meal or drinks while watching your chosen film. You can also order food from your car or at the seating area.

THE FOOD AREA

Autocine Málaga Metrovacesa

has an impressive, 3,000m2 dining area, where you will be tempted by many varieties of food. There is the classic American DINER (which is allAmerican, from its décor right through to its menu), as well as various food trucks and a petfriendly dining zone.

RITA’S MÁLAGA

Every weekend, the venue will be hosting events in the food zone, featuring live music, DJs, food trucks, and a chill-out area. Moreover, Rita’s Brunch will be taking place every Saturday and Sunday. Head to this spot with your date or your group of friends, and enjoy a marvellous dinner and drinks, then dance to music spun by top DJs. I had a look at the menu and it tempted me with gourmet croquetas, vegetable gyozas, salchichón tartar, corvina ceviche, grilled octopus, beef and pork dishes, and a myriad of desserts. To reserve a table and enjoy an à la carte Mediterranean meal, Tel: 680 999 117.

UNIQUE EVENTS

During its first year, Autocine hosted numerous events (including business events, awards ceremonies, fundraising events, and festivals). The venue has a 12,000-person capacity and one of the largest screens in Europe, which makes it ideal for important events. The establishment can

also be hired out for parties or weddings (including Las Vegasstyle Elvis weddings).

AIMS TO CONQUER THE SKIES WIZZ AIR

back to CONTENTSD SPOTLIGHT flights 64 / OCTOBER 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

In a decade so far affected by Covid, staffing and equipment issues, rising fuel costs and overall inflation, as well as mounting pressure on economical flying, Wizz Air has launched an ambitious programme of expansion. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF WIZZ AIR

The rise of economybased airlines began in the 1990s, when deregulation and the ending of generous government support for national carriers opened up the market. The resulting flood of cheap flights to destinations across Europe and even beyond changed tourism, perhaps forever, but as we push

further into the 2020s, that model seems to be under a great deal of strain. In fact, the era of ‘bus fare flying’ may be coming to an end.

The reasons for this are many; just as the industry re-emerged from Covid travel restrictions on a path to rapid recovery from the pandemic’s lockdowns, it was hit by a spate of

adverse factors, such as rising fuel and staffing costs, labour shortages, long waiting times for new equipment due to supply chain bottlenecks, rising environmental-focused regulation and overall inflation. Taken together, they are putting severe strain on ticket prices and profit margins alike. ›

Smart new uniforms are part of the new look New routes are being added across Spain and Europe
WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 65

Within this environment, it is hard to maintain the kind of fares that we have enjoyed for the past 25 years, and many in the air travel sector appear to be on the defensive rather than preparing for growth, but there is a significant exception to the rule that stands out within the current landscape. Not only is Wizz Air posting impressive results, but it is also embarking upon an expansion plan at the heart of which is an

ever-widening range of destinations served.

PLANNING FOR GROWTH

Contrary to most airlines, Wizz Air prepared for growth during the Covid period, adding the new Airbus A321 Neo to its fleet and also investing in updated infrastructure and expanded capacity, as it added new routes and services in Austria, Germany, Eastern Europe, Western Europe and the Middle East. This growth also

involves Spain, where Whizz Air has come to dominate air travel to most of Eastern Europe from hubs such as Málaga, Alicante and Madrid.

New routes continue to be added as the Hungarian-based company grows in market share and importance. In this regard, the results speak for themselves, as Wizz Air figures have soared in most regards, with the number of passengers carried so

far in 2022 over three times greater than the three million-mark posted in 2021. Not only did revenue grow by over 300 per cent, but it was also up 20 per cent on pre-pandemic levels.

The driving force behind this growth is CEO, Jószef Váradi, whose belief in his company and the industry has seen Wizz Air expand its operating capacity by 30 per cent, where many airlines are struggling due to reduced capabilities.

The same cost rises affecting them also act as a challenge to further growth for Váradi’s airline, but the company is overcoming these thanks to the investments made and a momentum that has seen profitability rise within adverse conditions.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

“During the second quarter we focused on ramping up our network – restoring capacity in our core markets just below pre-pandemic levels. Around 30 per cent of our new capacity was deployed in markets where we expanded new operations during COVID-19,” said Váradi. “We’ve now adjusted our network in view of the industry supply chain disruptions, making tactical capacity reductions from June onwards to increase the agility of our operation and supply chain.”

Thanks to its attractive pricing

and high levels of punctuality and service, Wizz Air enjoys among the highest occupation levels in the aviation industry, and this is driving an expansion of new routes and flight capacity across airports in the UK, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Italy, Spain and the Middle East, where the UAE market is well developed and Saudi Arabia represents an important new addition.

The fleet is being added to by a new generation of ultraefficient Airbus A321 Neo jet airliners that reduce fuel consumption and score high in terms of lower environmental impact.

Wizz Air also has one of the youngest aircraft fleets in the world, with an average age per aeroplane of under five years. Sustainability features high on the agenda of the airline, not only for costsaving purposes, but also in order to stay comfortably ahead of environmental regulations.

A GROWING COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

Wizz Air has enjoyed a reputation as a leader in aviation sustainability for several years now, but in 2022 it was proclaimed the ‘Most Sustainable LowCost Airline’ as part of the World Finance Sustainability Awards. The company has not just committed itself to acquiring new high-efficiency passenger liners, but also commissions regular studies and reports on how

to implement efficiencyenhancing measures that also reduce environmental impact.

Wizz Air’s Sustainable Procurement Policy is the product of such studies, as encapsulated in its annual sustainability report, and it is thanks to such initiatives and efforts that it is currently the airline with the lowest emissions per passenger kilometre. The introduction of partly sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has played a

pivotal role in achieving this accolade, which measures in at just under 60 grams of CO2

All of the above makes Wizz Air the most exciting airline in Europe right now, as it is not only the most sustainable low-cost airline but also the fastest-growing one, and in addition was named one of the world’s top-ten safest airway companies by airlineratings. com. The airline’s network of routes across Europe and Spain is expanding, and already includes regular flights from Málaga, Alicante, Madrid, Mallorca, Barcelona, Seville and also Gibraltar, giving Costa del Sol residents access to the world. e

AMG ONE HYPERCAR MERCEDES

Many Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts question why the company has never had a true sports supercar while others point to the fabled SSKs of the 1920s and 30s as pioneers of the segment. It could be said that the 300 SL Gullwing of the mid 1950s was the original supercar and that the 2003 SLR McLaren came close too, but this speculation will soon be laid to rest with the imminent launch of the spectacular new Mercedes-AMG ONE. WORDS TONY WHITNEY

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MERCEDES
back to CONTENTSD SPOTLIGHT motoring 74 / OCTOBER 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Mercedes describes the car as having ‘Formula One technology for the road’ and a glance at the performance figures confirms that this is no shallow boast. It sits at the very pinnacle of the Mercedes-Benz lineup and is priced way beyond anything the company has approached before at over 2-million euros. Only 275 units will be sold and production is just getting started. The usual rumours are circulating that all are spoken for. Almost expectedly, the powertrain is hybrid

and uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre V-6 petrol engine working in unison with no less than four powerful electric motors. Current Formula One cars also use 1.6-litre turbocharged V-6s. The car has four-wheel drive, more or less essential to get a whopping 1,063-horsepower to the road. You’ll top 100-km/h in just 2.9-seconds and 200-km/h in only 7.0secs if you keep going. For the bold, top speed is 352-km/h, which is faster than the takeoff speed of a Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft. ›

WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 75

Despite the massive reserves of power, the car is surprisingly economical, recording a saloon-like 8.7-litres/100-km combined. Electric only range is a measly 18.1 km, which won’t bother anybody buying one of these.

The carbon fibre monocoque bodywork is ground-hugging to say the least. The lines are sinuous and organic rather than angular and huge vents in the nose direct air to cool the carbon ceramic brakes – much needed for decelerating down from anything like this car’s upper speed ranges. There’s even a big intake on the roof to convey cooling air to the engine. At the rear, there’s a two-piece diffuser to help aerodynamics as well as a retractable spoiler.

As with other elements of the car, the exhaust outlet was inspired by the Mercedes Formula One cars. The aerodynamic features are adjustable and there are three modes: highway, track and (intriguingly) ‘race drag reduction.’ For the doors, Mercedes chose an ‘out and up’ design rather than going the gullwing route. The new Mercedes hypercar is certainly a superlative design exercise, but the company insists that styling took second place to technology during the five years it took to develop the car.

Those expecting something akin to a traditional Mercedes-Benz sports car cockpit with this car are in for a big surprise. It’s certainly

the most radical effort we’ve ever seen from the company but since they are boasting that this is a roadgoing F-1 car, why not create an interior to back that up? Most noticeable item at first glance is the steering wheel, that is rectangular in shape and with carbon fibre spokes, liberally dotted with control buttons and warning lights – just like an F-1 racer. Two large digital screens dominate the dash and that’s pretty well all you get as far as instrumentation goes. Don’t look for a rear view mirror. A rear-facing camera takes care of that function which is just as well because there’s almost no rear visibility from the driver’s seat. ›

The two seats are sculpted to keep the occupants firmly in place when exploiting the AMG ONE’s performance range. The driver’s seat does not slide back and forth but the pedal box is adjustable for people of different heights and the steering wheel is adjustable in the usual fashion.

While many observers might say that cars like this are an anachronism in the times we live in,

it’s good to see one of the pioneer automobile manufacturers indulging itself with such a sports car. When the car was being mooted, some corporate insiders came out against the project, believing that the money could be better spent elsewhere. Even so, It’s praiseworthy that a company with the reputation of MercedesBenz should display its prowess to the world in such a spectacular fashion. e

MILES TELLER

BRINGING BACK THE GLAMOUR OF HOLLYWOOD’S GOLDEN AGE

Ifeel fortunate to have been born to parents who were passionate about the movies and who introduced me to charismatic actors like Rock Hudson, Marlon Brando, Orson Welles, Gregory Peck, and Robert Mitchum. If you are into 1960s and 1970s films, then you know that each of these actors had something so unique that the roles they played seemed tailormade for them. Think of the power of Marlon Brando as the brutish Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire, the integrity of Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird or the Machiavellian

cruelty of Robert Mitchum in Cape Fear . Many of these actors appear to have a ‘reincarnation’ in current times. When it comes to possessing a singular blend of strength, physicality, and sensitivity, Miles Teller seems to have ‘inherited’ large doses of his predecessors’ magic.

ENTERING THE RABBIT HOLE

The first time many audiences came across Teller was in Rabbit Hole (2010) alongside Nicole Kidman. The film tells the story of a young couple whose fouryear-old son runs into the street after his dog and is struck by a

teenage driver (played by Teller). The teenager’s role is difficult; he is wracked with guilt and wishes to make amends. The result is an ensuing friendship/ obsession with Kidman’s character, one that in many ways helps both find meaning from their indescribable pain. Teller, who was in his early 20s at the time, played his character with a minimalist, natural style that often made me forget this was fiction. His performance was a tour de force and it marked him as a future great. It was almost like watching a young DeNiro all over again. ›

CELEBRATING THE SPECTACULAR NOW

The Spectacular Now (James Ponsoldt, 2013) is hands-down one of the most important coming-of-age films in recent years. In this sensitive work, Teller plays Sutter Keely, a professional evader of responsibilities, a teen who isn’t worried about college or his future, and who shies away from facing the pain of abandonment. His devil-may-care attitude makes him a popular kid at school and his philosophy is one that many of those who live ‘too much in the future’ would benefit from adopting. However, circumstances force him to face his past and make key decisions

about where his life is headed. Thankfully, he has the help of an intelligent friend he falls in love with. Once again, Teller portrays this role with so much emotion, honesty, and charm that it is tough to imagine someone else pulling it off. Not surprisingly, the young actor won the Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

IS MILES MISUNDERSTOOD?

A bevy of publications have pegged Teller as a bit of a ‘dick’ (he referred to Joaquin Phoenix as ‘Joaq’ in an Esquire interview – something the journalist found distinctly unassuming). It doesn’t help that the

actor has an ironic sense of humour that occasionally makes him look like a wise ass. Those who are into psychology might say it is the typical behaviour of an introvert trying to take on extrovert characteristics to ‘belong’ in such a competitive, cutthroat industry.

Since Teller has the clout of actors like Shia LaBeouf or Timothée Chalamet, it is somewhat bemusing to see some of the odd film choices he has made. These include Fantastic Four, 21 & Over, Two Night Stand, Project X, That Awkward Moment, and War Dogs Chalamet, for instance, has been extremely picky, and his latest film, Bones & All reunites him with cinematic great,

Luca Guadagnino (of Call Me By Your Name fame). Teller has openly asserted his ambition; he wishes to “contribute to the catalogue of great acting.” He definitely started at the right places to get noticed, having attended the New York University Tisch School of the Arts and specialised in method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. In 2009, he obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drama. He knows he hasn’t got the perfect looks of Chalamet or Daniel Day-Lewis, but once again, let your mind steer back to Robert Mitchum, James Stuart, Donald Sutherland, or Burt Lancaster. Classic good looks are

The Spectacular Now Top Gun: Maverick

no prerequisite to greatness on the silver screen.

RISING HIGH

In recent times, you may have seen Teller as Rooster (Goose’s son) in Top Gun: Maverick. What a film! I’m not a big action

film fan, but this movie felt like five minutes of magic! It was amazing, as was the chemistry between Teller and the ageless Tom Cruise. Teller will soon be working on Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge (about two people with dangerous characters

who find commonality in each other) and Not Without Hope (about a group of friends stranded at sea and struggling for survival). Both are action-based but we hope we get to hear him speak lines as exquisite as those of his character, Sutter

Keely, with all the emotion his eyes, body, and voice can portray: “You think beauty is in some classroom or some textbook, and it’s not. That’s not what it’s about. This right here. This is beautiful. All of this. That’s all you need.” e

STILL REELING FROM THE WHIPLASH

If there is one single movie that captures the incredible talent of Miles Teller, it is definitely Whiplash He plays a young drummer whose

passion, ambition, and future are crushed to death by a teacher whose aim is to destroy his pupil (perhaps because the latter is so undeniably gifted). If you haven’t seen this film and are interested in doing so, my

advice is to avoid reading anything about it. It has many jaw-dropping moments and an ending that will penetrate your heart and soul, causing you to ponder over it days after you have viewed it.

PURSUING SOFTNESS THROUGH YOGA

Around 300 million people practise yoga worldwide – a result of the proactive role people are currently taking in their health and wellbeing. Margaret Holland, a yoga teacher with 33 years’ experience of practice and 10 years’ experience of teaching, knows the transformational power of this millenary discipline. It came into her life at a challenging time and restored the balance she craved. It also became her passion, calling, and profession.

Margaret, who hails from Glasgow, married young and moved to Guernsey, where she and her ex-husband raised a family and launched a restaurant business. They had an apartment on the Coast and eventually decided to move here with their children, Callum, Megan and Christie. “I had always been into fitness and began practising yoga when I was pregnant with Christie. When I first started, I wasn’t aware of the mind-body connection. I just wanted to look like Madonna!” she laughs. After a few minutes with Margaret, you realise she does that often – laugh, smile, and share her experiences. She is everything I imagine a dream yoga teacher to be – kind, encouraging, funny, warm, and generous. Her life is, indeed, graced. She is a happy mum and grandmother and she is engaged to be married to her long-time beau, Andy.

HONING HER SKILLS

After practising yoga for around a year, Margaret decided to train in a Hot Yoga method called Absolute Yoga in Thailand, a style which “has around 50 postures (compared to Bikram Yoga’s 27.).” When she returned to the Coast, Hot Yoga studios didn’t exist. Because Hot Yoga rooms range in temperature from 33ºC to 40ºC, she decided to teach her classes on the beach – something she still does today.

GOING WITH THE FLOW

“Hot yoga sequences can be very challenging,” says Margaret, “and many of my clients were close to my own age (around 50, at the time). This made me think about ways to add more softness, fluidity and comfort to my classes. I was attracted by the movement and grace of Vinyasa Flow, so I decided to train in this discipline in Bali.” In Vinyasa Flow, practitioners move

through set postures in time with their breath. When Margaret returned, she continued

to teach hot yoga but “changed it up a bit to incorporate Vinyasa flow.” ›

“With ease, we can let go of the tension that squashes our intuition, physical and mental ability and creativity”
Tara Stiles, Founder of Strala Yoga
WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 89

DISCOVERING STRALA

YOGA

Margaret was on a continuous quest to make yoga more inclusive. “People who are beginners to yoga are sometimes not body-aware and the postures can be too hard for them to sustain.” She instinctively knew that a more inclusive yoga style was in demand. She found it in Strala Yoga – “a way of being, moving and healing, that helps people connect with how they feel, move how it feels good, and handle challenges with ease.” Strala Yoga’s

benefits include greater strength and mobility, mental wellbeing, stronger immunity, and relaxation. The bonus is that your energy levels also skyrocket.

TRAINING IN THE CITY OF DREAMS

Margaret trained in Strala Yoga in New York. This style was created by classical ballet dancer and yoga practitioner, Tara Stiles. Its science and movement are also guided by Mike Taylor, a Harvard- and Oxfordtrained mind-body specialist who has studied complementary

medicine and practised Eastern movement and healing (including Tai Chi and Qi Gong) for 30 years. Strala Yoga combines these practices with traditional Chinese medicine to help people release stress, heal, and break through a myriad of challenges.

The Strala philosophy suited Margaret to a tee since she notes that “everyone has different joint lengths and depths, strength, and balance. If new knowledge has become available, it seems contraindicative to follow tradition ‘just because’.” Yoga should not be about achieving

London 1988. Royal fever has swept the nation and Britain has fallen in love with Princess Diana. The Royal Protection Command are tasked with keeping Diana safe. However, when doubts arise as to the Command’s ability to do the job, Detective William Warwick and his team are sent by Scotland Yard to investigate. It becomes apparent that an underground organisation has the security of the country, and the crown in particular, in its sights. But which target will be next in line. Archer has woven together a story with plots and subplots, crosses and double crosses, wrought with tension. Although Next in Line is the fifth book in the William Warwick series, it can be read independently.

Boyd is back with a beautiful and picturesque story of life and what it is to live. Told in the style of an autobiography, The Romantic is the story of Cashel Greville Ross born in December 1799. The novel follows the ups and downs of Ross’s life as the 19th Century unfolds. Through his eyes we experience the battle of Waterloo, become acquainted with Byron and Shelly and travel from Europe to Africa, Asia and the Americas. Although historical events feature throughout, the novel’s focus is on a single life, lived to the full, by a hopeless romantic. This novel is an immersive, atmospheric, emotional, and fun read.

PROPERTY AS ART

The Gallery Marbella is a private residential country club in the hills of Palo Alto. Surrounded by wooded slopes and mountain ranges just seven minutes to Marbella town – a uniquely central yet also remote setting in the midst of nature and on the edge of a national park. “Such a location deserves a very special approach, and as it provides the basis for a truly exquisite way of life, our designs for the villas and the country club have centred upon the concept of art of living,” says Matias Villarroel, the driving force behind The Gallery. ›

A setting in the foothills of the Sierra de las Nieves nature reserve – only seven minutes from Marbella Centre and the beach – has inspired the creation of what is being called the most exclusive residential country club in Southern Spain.

The result is a private collection of state-of-the-art villa designs that not only bear the names of the masters – Monet, van Gogh, Klimt and Pollock – but whose artful styling also incorporates a high degree of flexibility and freedom to accentuate and personalise. “In The Gallery, we have strived for an aesthetic harmony of exterior design while encouraging our owners to create homes whose interior configuration and décor are unique.”

Aside from choosing between more or fewer bedrooms, single

or double-height ceilings, and a rich palette of decorative elements and detailing, each buyer has the opportunity to work with the architects as well as the interior design team to take the home in their own direction. “In a sense, we enable our owners to form part of the design team and be involved in the ultimate look, feel and configuration of their villa at The Gallery.”

A broad range of options are available on top of the elements that come as standard, such as private lifts, Gunni & Trentino

kitchens, ethanol fireplaces and infinity edge pools. “Given the beauty of the natural surroundings and the amenities of the country club, as well as the convenient proximity of Marbella, we wished to be artful not only in the design of the villas, but also in their quality of build and finishing,” says Matias Villarroel.

At The Gallery, you are not only an owner of a beautiful villa with spectacular views and full privacy, you are also part of an exclusive community with unparalleled outstanding resort amenities. ›

A NEW CONCEPT OF LUXURY LIVING

“The Gallery Marbella is designed to meet the demands and dreams of today’s discerning buyer,” says Smadar Kahana, Managing Director of Engel & Völkers Marbella, the agency exclusively commercialising The Gallery. “It offers gated security, a select

likeminded people.”

Access is through the 24hour manned gate at the northern entrance to Palo Alto, from which you enter the private domain of The Gallery through a second controlled point. These artfully conceived and styled villas enjoy spectacular views, total privacy and security, with a broad range

Ojén and Marbella are around five minutes away, yet the setting within a 50-hectare domain is one of natural splendour. You palpably sense that this is the doorway to the open spaces, natural parks and country villages of Andalucía, and indeed, the wooded hills and deep green valleys with trickling streams contain a series of pathways and hiking trails that lead not only into the mountain ranges, but also all the way down to the sea at Río Real.

OFFICE DESIGN TO WATCH OUT FOR

Natural materials appeal to eco lovers

HOME
back to CONTENTSd LIFESTYLE décor 122 / OCTOBER 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

On a global scale, around 16 per cent of companies have fully remote staff, while approximately 62 per cent of employees work from home at least occasionally. The pivotal year that was 2020 prompted many companies to try telecommuting for the first time. Those that did so

probably experienced the typical ups and downs of this style of work. On the upside, many employees save considerable time by avoiding the daily commute. On the downside, fully remote employees can miss the sense of camaraderie they used to have. Moreover, despite the utility of tools

like Slack, Skype and Asana, communication can suffer, which makes sense considering the fact that 70 to 93 per cent of all communication is nonverbal. Many employees are running into another unexpected obstacle: having to set up a home office system without help from their employers (a mere 20 to 25 per cent of companies are paying for the cost of equipment and furnishings for home offices). If you are now working from home and the thought of designing a brand-new office space appeals, you don’t have to undertake a major renovation. Find your inspiration in the following trends.

SUSTAINABLE INTERIORS

If you love our décor pages, then you may have read our feature on biophilic design – a movement that seeks to create a closer connection between human beings and nature. One important aspect of biophilia is the use of natural, sustainable materials that blur the distinction between indoor and outdoor life. Eco-friendly choices range from flooring (bamboo, reclaimed wood, and sustainably harvested wood

are three popular picks) right through to accoutrements like macramé hammocks, teak chairs, and natural fabrics like cotton for furnishings. Wood trim can be found everywhere as well – including walls, shelves, armchairs, office desks, and chairs.

If you have a separate space for an office and you’re up for a renovation, let sustainability take the lead. Bring in as many indoor plants as you can, and position them at various

levels (hanging over your desk, standing proud in a special corner and growing on living walls). Plants are natural air purifiers that have been found to improve health, productivity, and concentration. If you are into murals or wallpaper, choose natural subjects such as trees, leaves, or wild verdant jungles. These also make excellent subjects for framed art and sculptures. ›

SOUNDPROOF SPACES

Luxury homes with budgets for features such as soundproofing are buying into office structures that can be fitted into a large living room or common space for greater privacy and independence. ROOM, an international company with locations in the U.S., Europe, and Australia, is reshaping offices and home workspaces via smart, sustainable, flexible solutions they sell online and deliver directly. Some of their most interesting products are the Light Phone Booth and the Room

for Zoom. The latter, for instance, is a turnkey video conference space that bridges the gap between inperson and remote working for new hybrid workplaces or homes. They include optimised lighting, pre-

installed hardware, built-in power units, whiteboards, sustainable soundproofing, sit-and-stand desks and a large touchscreen and webcam.

MINIMALISM IS BACK

A few years ago, minimalism gave way to maximalism in all its colourful splendour. However, simple, uncluttered styles have made a comeback in home offices for smaller homes and apartments. Minimalistic offices typically have little more than a small, tidy workplace comprising a neutrally hued desk, wall shelves, and lighting. To ace this look, keep everyday items like pens, diaries, and phones neatly tucked away in your desk drawers and embrace a couple of small decorative items and pops of colour.

If you are into luxury, this trend might still be up your street. Within your tiny space, you can add a chic, elegant ambience through features such as LED lighting, accent table lamps, a designer desk and chairs, and fabric-effect wallpaper. A perfect instance of this trend at play can be found in Laskasas’ Legacy Home Office. i www.laskasas.com ›

NATURAL AND INTELLIGENT LIGHTING

If you invest in one thing in your home office renovation works, let it be light. Sunlight plays an important role in regulating circadian rhythms, making you more aware and enhancing your concentration. Many homeowners are knocking down walls and replacing them with sliding doors, large iron-framed windows or bay windows. If you have a covered patio, why not set up your workstation there, so you can work amidst greenery or overlooking

the sea? If you work in the evening, consider the incorporation of ‘turnable white light’ (a new technology that simulates natural daylight and produces the brightness of nature 24 hours a day). To keep your energy

costs down, go for connected LED lighting, which automatically brightens up when you’re present and dims when you leave your office. An intelligent lighting system can cut up to 47 per cent off your energy bills.

MARRYING TRADITION AND ARTISTRY

The ultimate home office is one that expresses your personality and life experience. We previously mentioned that maximalism –which involves mixing contrasting prints and patterns, embracing eclecticism, and making colour a star player in spaces like bedrooms and outdoor patios – is holding sway as a whole in interior design. If you like this trend, bring it into your office space.

Imagine a small, contemporary desk

facing a statement wall filled with artworks, prints, and photographs. On either side of the desk are bendable statement lamps and on the desk are travel mementos, photographs, and woodwick essential oil candles. Just behind your desk is a lounge area, where you can relax or meet clients. Stylish pieces such as a Chesterfield or bright chenille-covered chair and a footrest in

a serious colour like dark brown leather or burgundy sit gracefully over a bright geometric or art deco rug. These details mark a home office as belonging to a person with a strong eye for design and an understanding of the effect that colour has on mood.

Your office can also comprise mainly traditional pieces of furniture that are complemented by artistic touches like metallic accents, large-

scale artworks, and contemporary shelving systems. If you aren’t into bright colours, use novel shapes and textures to fill your surroundings with visual appeal.

OUTDOOR OFFICES

A 2020 study by Cornell University scientists found that spending just 10 minutes in a natural setting can reduce the effects of physical and mental stress and make people happier. Of course, this is just

one study of many that highlight the importance of spending time outdoors – something that many of us, even those living on the sunny Coast, fail to do as much as our health requires. The solution, here and abroad, comes in the form of outdoor offices, which can be located within one’s garden. In sunny zones, you can

simply set your office up under an outdoor solution such as Extremis’ Sensu Single Square or Kosmos Round shade sails. For cooler days, an outdoor firepit or patio warmer will keep the warmth factor high while you type away or engage in Skype calls.

OUTDOOR CABINS

For rainy, wintery months, few things are as practical as having an outdoor ‘cubby house’ as your home office. Silence is de rigueur if other family members are also working from home or studying, and an outdoor enclosed construction can provide you with all the privacy you need. Compact cabins may be small but they can be just as stylish as indoor offices. Prioritise quality flooring and walls and insert warmth and artistry into the space through the use of warm colours and details such as Italian pendant lighting. ›

CREATIVE WORK SPACES

Research the topic of home offices and you will find that people are immensely creative when it comes to making the most of a small home. Some are building their offices in original places like the space beneath the staircase, a long hallway with natural lighting and even walk-in wardrobes.

If you have an open floor plan, you can simply use creative

partitions to establish a space that is all your own. If you want to keep it simple, invest in ergonomic furniture and ensure your desk is large enough to enable you to position your computer and chair at the recommended distance from each other. Make sure you have plenty of leg room beneath your desk and don’t forget to add a few personal touches that make the space feel like it is truly your own. e

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS

A MARRIAGE OF ARTISTRY AND INNOVATION

If you asked a makeup fan these days which brands were most innovative, their answers would probably include Dior, Hourglass Cosmetics, and Anastasia Beverly Hills (ABH). Dior is currently wowing the world with makeup for the metaverse, while Hourglass Cosmetics has developed the first-ever vegan replacement for carmine (the vibrant red pigment used widely in lipstick). Anastasia Beverly Hills, however, has always been famed for one thing: its bold colour palettes, mostly designed for daring beauty buffs who embrace the capacity of bright, vivid hues to lift the mood and add life to an otherwise neutral world.

WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

BORN IN THE PLATINUM TRIANGLE

ABH was born in 1997, when Romanian beauty entrepreneur, Anastasia Soare, decided it was time to open a flagship salon in the heart of Beverly Hills. She wisely honed in on one specific area of the face: the brows. She developed a patented Golden Ratio Eyebrow Shaping Method, which is rooted in the geometry of the Golden Ratio. This sparked the ‘brow revolution’ and many new companies sprang up, aiming to tap into a demand identified by Soares. Suddenly, sparse, overplucked brows were replaced by full, beautifully arched ones that could be painted on ‘hair by hair’ if necessary.

WHAT IS ANASTASIA’S GOLDEN RATIO METHOD?

“Our eyes are intrinsically trained to spot divine proportion and immediately associate it with beauty and harmony,” said Anastasia, who took her cue from great thinkers like Pythagoras, Da Vinci, and Einstein. They believed that the human eye was encoded to recognise the universal design fractal, also known as The Golden Ratio (ϕ or τ, which is approximately equal to

1.618.). The latter reflects the idea that an object’s wholeness is greater than the sum of its parts, enabling human beings to find balance, symmetry, and universal beauty.

According to Anastasia, brows should start directly above the centre of the nostril. They should, arch upwards at the imaginary line that runs between the centre of the tip of the nose and the centre of the iris. Finally, they should end at the imaginary line that runs from the bottom outside corner of the nostril and the outer corner of the eye.

ICONIC PRODUCT LINES

Anastasia has taken her brand beyond the world of brows, though ABH is still known for having the most cracking brushes and brow pomades in the business (I’ve tried them all and would never replace my Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade or brow brushes). The Dipbrow Pomade lasts all day and lends a natural result to even the most sculpted, full brow looks. ABH is also famed for its welldesigned eye palettes. The Soft Glam Anastasia Beverly Hills palette is one of the best-selling nude/everyday

palettes of all time, favoured by beauty influencers and indeed anyone who enjoys creating a natural daytime look. Modern Renaissance is another huge worldwide seller, featuring plum, peach, and burgundy hues, as well as lighter neutral ones.

NORVINA’S VISION

Colour and vibrancy are present, above all, in the palettes designed by Anastasia Soare’s daughter, Norvina, who is President of the company. Norvina is famed for her eye for fashion, her bright violet hair, and her talent for creating next-level combinations of hues and textures in her palettes. Her Norvina Collection (comprising six palettes) has been reviewed countless times by the biggest influencers in beauty. Some palettes (like the Norvina Pro Pigment Palette Vol. 5) contain complementary shades in a variety of textures – including matte, duo-chrome, sparkling, and metallic. Others (like the Norvina Pro Pigment Palette Vol. 6) are pure matte in festival-inspired rainbow hues, intended ‘for play and artistry’. Each is a must-have for those who enjoy creating eye-catching looks that display one’s ability to choose, match, and blend shades.

ABH frequently releases new items – from brow and eye kits to lip glosses and cream bronzers. This is a brand for those who are after highly pigmented, top-quality products that last all day and are 100 per cent cruelty-free.

BIOHACKING

NEXT LEVEL HEALTH IN OXYZONE MARBELLA

You may have only heard about hacking a computer, but there is a growing trend in recent years using the same expression for meaningful lifestyle changes through a variety of tools. WORDS MADDIE QUINN PHOTOGRAPHY ANDREEA AVRAM

With regular exercise, mindfulness practices, sleeping well and eating healthily you are already recognising that your mind and body need assistance to reach their peak performance, with lasting wellness for a longer life. There is also a growing amount of science-backed technology becoming available, which aims not only

to keep you healthy but also to help you heal from conditions regular medicine failed to treat successfully. But how do you find the best in the complex maze of these fast-emerging biohacking tools? We explore the new OxyZone in Nueva Andalucía, offering to advise on and delivering a variety of the most cuttingedge, non-invasive treatments.

144 / OCTOBER 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE back to CONTENTSn SPA health

WHAT IS BIOHACKING?

Everything that changes body chemistry and physiology in order to boost energy and vitality falls under the biohacking concept, starting with the more traditional lifestyle and dietary changes, taking supplements, to wearing smart watches and using apps to track, record and correct habits — helping to increase constructive and reduce destructive ones. Hacking deeper into the body, light and energy can be kept in balance, cells trained, oxygenated, and regeneration promoted by using biotechnological tools —

machines that are operated by trained technicians delivering proper, study-proven results. Unlike with mainstream medicine’s ‘the same works for all’ blanket approach, biohacking is mostly based on self-experimentation, trying out these non-invasive technics and finding what combinations work best for a positive outcome for a specific person with a particular problem. Biohacking is therefore most advised to be used for prevention, but it can also be very effective in enhancing the body’s ability to heal itself in the face of a variety of diseases.

WHO IS BEHIND OXYZONE?

While biohacking technologies are usually set up as a specialised clinic around a single treatment, OxyZone claims to be the first in Spain that is designed to stack the most powerful devices together, all in one place. Called a Biohacking and Wellness Center, OxyZone radiates vibes far removed from a center and feels more like a retreat with its modern whitewashed villa premises, where peace and calm take precedence as soon as you step in. ›

WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 145

Two couples’ ambitious vision comes to life in OxyZone, four people with a passion to reverse ageing and enhance health, initially just for themselves, but then to share their immense research into the most innovative technologies with others interested. Purel Maor, entrepreneur, health guru and a great believer in a long lifespan explains on YouTube at length about how he resonates with certain biohacking techniques. Together with his partner, Moldovan Irina Ciobanu who brings the Biontology specialism to the table, Swiss born Marbellalover and entrepreneur Miguel Canca with his fiancée, long-term vegan Andreea Avram, nutrition and herbal plant specialist, created OxyZone to fulfil each and every one of their dreams.

WHO IS BIOHACKING FOR?

“Ageing is a choice, not a necessity“ – says Purel “with the information that is available to

everyone, it is possible to slow or even reverse the ageing process and prevent diseases knocking on your door.” “You have to make lifestyle changes and use technologies available, have more energy, unlock your body’s full potential!”

Biohacking is for everyone who is willing to make these conscious choices preferably before falling ill, because once sick, it gets harder. From this perspective, it’s recommended to start today, even if you seem to be healthy, there is always space to improve, or even to achieve something that is called super health. The various programmes can help boost the immune system, accelerate recovery, improve skin conditions, cognition and sleep quality, reduce inflammation, remove toxins and increase energy, among a long list of other benefits. It seems it is not an apple a day, but it’s biohacking that keeps the doctor away. And hopefully for a long time!

ATRIAL FIBRILLATION

– THE MOST COMMON ARRHYTHMIA –EVERYTHING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT IT

Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia, especially with increasing age. The statistics tell us that more than 25 per cent of people over the age of 70 will develop this arrhythmia. When symptomatic, like with the statement above, the patients are lucky because they do receive a diagnosis in time, and treatment and prevention of complications can be put in place right away. Some patients, however, don’t feel anything abnormal at all, nevertheless they share the same risks and frequently they only become aware of their problem after a stroke or when the heart is already failing.

WORDS MANUELA REISBECK

g DR. MANUELA REISBECK

Internist at Reisbeck-medical private practice and CardioCare Marbella, international cardio-vascular centre. www.cardiocaremarbella.com

back to CONTENTSn SPA health 150 / OCTOBER 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

The two major aspects of atrial fibrillation, put simply, are the effects on your heart health and the risk of a major debilitating stroke.

WHAT HAPPENS TO US WHEN OUR HEARTS DEVELOP THIS ARRHYTHMIA?

At a fast rate and discordant rhythm, the heart will eventually weaken, and you may start developing symptoms of heart failure. The more heart disease you have experienced so far in your life, the more likely this is to happen. The same discordant heart activities also bear the risk of blood clots forming in the so called left atrial appendage, a little appendixlike structure attached to the left atrium of the heart. Occasionally, these clots may dislocate and shoot out of the heart, mostly into the brain, causing major strokes.

It is in your best interest as an

atrial fibrillation patient to keep both aspects of your disease under control to avoid major chronic damage. Cardiology patients are in a way quite lucky, because most conditions do have a treatment solution. And the atrial fibrillation is not different

TYPES OF TREATMENT

As a first line, we try to get your heart back into the normal rhythm with medication and/or a cardioversion procedure. It is fast and highly effective and, if successful, you may get some more years ‘on track’.

Should this procedure not be successful and especially if you are highly symptomatic from your arrhythmia, you may decide to opt for a permanent treatment, which is the cryoballoon ablation therapy. During this minimally invasive procedure, we use thin catheters to navigate to the

exact area of interest. Using very low temperatures a scar will be ‘burned’ into the specific area of your heart muscle responsible for the atrial fibrillation. This new scar tissue will not conduct electric impulses anymore. With an 8090 per cent success rate, this procedure will make the arrhythmia disappear.

The second aspect of atrial fibrillation treatment is the prevention of debilitating strokes. Most patients are started on oral blood thinning (anticoagulation) therapy right away. This must be continued life long, unless complications occur like major bleeding side effects or there is a contraindication for the oral anticoagulation therapy to begin with. In these special cases, when patients are at risk for bleeding complications, we can perform a procedure called left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO). It is also a minimally invasive procedure where we use a special device which will close the entry to the left atrial appendix, therefore making it impossible for any clots to be expelled into the brain.

Out of many years of experience we can assure you that atrial fibrillation is an important condition. It requires evaluation by a specialist cardiologist, who can guide you through your treatment options. e

“My heart beats fast and erratically, I can feel it in my stomach, in my jaw and in my head,” would be a typical statement by many affected patients.

RAMBUNCTIOUS RODENTS TO LOVE

Imagine a pet that is small, smart, highly trainable, clean, hypoallergenic, and relatively inexpensive to own. Most rodents have all these attributes, which is one reason why their popularity has risen sharply over the past two decades. Many programmes (including a documentary by National Geographic) have demonstrated the mistreatment of rodents like rats, regardless of their high intelligence and affectionate nature. Despite media misrepresentation and myths, rodents smell good and are extremely hygienic. The only thing that can potentially smell is their cage, which should be cleaned regularly. Below are just a few friendly rodents that are making life fun for homeowners of all ages. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

HUMOROUS HAMSTERS

These cute pets can sometimes be shy, but often they enjoy interacting with humans and being caressed. Just a couple of decades ago, the number of hamster breeds you could typically choose from was relatively small, but today there is an incredibly wide array of breeds that almost seem too cute to be true! The golden or Syrian hamster is one of them. This hamster is easy to tame, but if you want to interact with it, make sure it’s night-time, when it’s most in the mood for social interaction. This hamster should never be kept in pairs or groups once it has matured as fights can ensue. Another cute hamster breed is the dwarf hamster, which is tiny and grey.

It is docile and thrives living with other members of its breed. It is super active, running around its tunnel and playing actively for hours.

To keep your hamsters happy and healthy, clean their cage daily. Provide them with opportunities for exercise by placing cardboard tubes, PVC pipes, plastic igloos and other recommended items into their enclosure. The larger the cage, the better for your rodents’ wellbeing. Give them plenty of time outside their cage, talk to them softly and handle them with care. For the first few days, cover their cage with a cloth to boost their sense of safety. Provide them (and any other rodents you take home) with water and vet-recommended

food, and contact your veterinarian so a regular visitation schedule can be established.

GENTLE GERBILS

Gerbils are cute diurnal animals that love shredding material for two main reasons: to keep their teeth short (since their teeth never stop growing) and to build nests. They are sociable and enjoy living in the company of others of their breed, but you should not house adult gerbils close to each other (even if they are in separate cages) if they do not know each other. These cuties also need time to get used to being handled, so allow them the space and time they need.

Your gerbil will need an enclosure that is big enough so that it can dig for hours and engage in vigorous physical activity. Keep its cage dry and out of the direct sunlight. When cleaning out its cage, reuse some of the existing (unsoiled) bedding and nesting material. Gerbils can feel stressed out when placed in an environment with totally new smells. Ask your vet and breeder for the ideal temperature, so your gerbil is neither too cold nor too hot.

d LIFESTYLE
152 / OCTOBER 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

MAGNIFICENT MICE

Pet mice are fun to watch at play and very easy to take care of, but take note – they can be a little harder-to-handle than larger rodents like rats. Be patient and start handling them when they are very young to avoid nipping and shyness. Mice are social and enjoy being surrounded by members of their breed. The easiest combination is a pair of female mice or a group of females. Males should not be kept together unless they are littermates who have never been separated. Once again, opt for a large cage so that each mouse has sufficient space. Before deciding on a cage size, do your research, talk to other rodent owners, and follow the advice of a trusted veterinarian.

RAVISHING RATS

I saved the best for last (I am particularly partial to rats, owing to how smart, loving, and affectionate they can be). If you read Stephen King’s The Green Mile, then you may remember Mr. Jingles – the genius mouse its owner thought should work in a circus. Rats are just as smart so you can try teaching them a host of tricks – everything from pushing a wheel to playing basketball and jumping through hoops. To keep your little one happy, go for a big, well-ventilated cage (which should be cleaned daily). Most pet rats that are trained can freely roam the house, returning to their cage only when it is time to sleep. You will probably find that your rat always wants to be near you, and that your pocket, the space beneath your collar, or your shoulder is its favourite resting spot. e

BLACKSHAW ESTATES

A NATURAL EVOLUTION

Grown from within the established decoration and project management firm Blackshaw Interior Design – a company with a trajectory of 15 years in the Marbella market – Blackshaw Estates forms the natural link between the purchase, renovation, decoration and sale of a property. While Sally Blackshaw runs the decoration and renovation divisions, Alberto Webster heads up the real estate arm, with both collaborating within the Blackshaw group when their services overlap. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ

PHOTOGRAPHY KEVIN HORN
back to CONTENTSz ENTERPRISE property 156 / OCTOBER 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Sally Blackshaw has been working in interior design ever since she moved to Marbella in 2000. In over 20 years of styling luxury homes and managing renovation projects, first with Fendi and since 2007 through her own company, Blackshaw Interior Design, she has built up an international client base of homebuyers and investors who rely on her local knowledge and organisational skills as well as her creative design flair. This soon created an evolution from interior design commissions by clients who had bought Marbella homes to coordinating entire renovation projects, originally for homebuyers but later also on behalf of investors.

“In the process, the business evolved

“We complement one another very well, either by providing homebuyers with a highly creative and experienced decoration and renovation service, by helping investors achieve their goals through home redevelopment and sale, or by assisting developers with the look and feel of their projects’ interior styling"

two branches,” says Sally, “one focused on interior styling and the other on the project management of renovation work, executed through us from concept to completion and final furnishing.” She also coordinated landscaping, and built up a team of trusted professionals in fields ranging from construction and engineering, lighting and home automation to architecture and engineering. “We’re at the Marbella Town Hall’s Urbanismo department twice a week submitting new designs for approval, so we are very experienced with all the requirements involved in construction and renovation work.”

Through the contacts and methodologies

established this way, Sally and her team can provide added value to their clients, as they know how to get projects approved faster and more efficiently. “This fact, along with our ability to transform older properties in good locations into wonderful modern homes, attracted investors to work with us, and together we have collaborated on a rather impressive portfolio of completed projects, where we went from initial concept and study all the way through design and construction to decoration, finishing and ultimately marketing and sales. The increasing involvement with the selling process has now given birth to Blackshaw Estates.”

AN INTEGRATED SERVICE

“A growing number of investors and homeowners were approaching us to redecorate and renovate existing properties for them, property developers were commissioning us to design the interiors of their show homes and real estate agents were asking us for input on how best to present homes for sale. As a result, we also started to become more closely involved in the marketing and sales process,” says Sally. “It reached a point where interior design, project management and property brokerage had already become an integrated part of the business we were operating, so it made sense to create specialist divisions, and this is how Blackshaw Estates was founded.” ›

WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 157

Sally knew she had the ideal partner in Alberto Webster, who as the director of Blackshaw Estates, blends the energy of youth with a great deal of experience in Marbella real estate, having run property companies before. “It’s an industry with its own idiosyncrasies,” says Alberto, “and not the one to be in if you’re not a people person and don’t enjoy getting to know the market inside out.” Fortunately, he is very good at both, and applies the well-known Blackshaw touch to a real estate arm that fits seamlessly into the existing operation. “The linkages between property purchase, decoration, renovation and

reselling are so strong that they form the foundations of our new company,” says Sally.

She coordinates the flow between the various divisions that now make up the Blackshaw group. “We complement one another very well, either by providing homebuyers with a highly creative and experienced decoration and renovation service, by helping investors achieve their goals through home redevelopment and sale, or by assisting developers with the look and feel of their projects’ interior styling. We naturally also help people to source properties that are interesting for modernisation and/or renovation, be it for their own use, to optimise rentals, or to sell on at a profit.”

FROM PURCHASE TO DECORATION

Like its interior design division, Blackshaw Estates covers the entire coast but focuses especially upon the Marbella area, most specifically high-end residential addresses such as the Golden Mile, Sierra Blanca, Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucía and also La Zagaleta and El Madroñal. “Our expertise is the luxury segment, and this can also include quality properties in Marbella East and the Estepona area, as well as downtown Marbella and the historic centre,”

adds Alberto, who relishes sourcing older properties in a top location that are ideal for renovation and transformation into a modern home, just as many of the newer homes he lists are upgraded for selling, or newly purchased ones decorated by Sally and her team.

“Few people combine this range of interlinked services, but it’s a pretty logical one if you think about it, and perfect for the resale market, though of course we also decorate and sell in new developments. In either field, Alberto is the go-to person thanks to his detailed knowledge of the market and his ability to produce results.”

It does make sense, especially as Sally and Alberto are experts in adding value to a Marbella property, be it to aid the selling and/or investment process, or simply to create a beautiful living environment for new homeowners. “Blackshaw is a coming together of two companies with their own specialisations that fit together very well, and therein lies the (added) value proposition we can offer homeowners and investors alike.”

INVESTING PRINCIPLES FOR YOUR

RETIREMENT IN SPAIN

Moving to a new country, from the UK to Spain, for example, is a major change. For anyone relocating – even more so if you are doing so on your retirement – a portfolio review should be high on the list of priorities to ensure their savings and investments are optimised for their new life in Spain.

TIME IN THE MARKETS – NOT ‘TIMING’ THE MARKETS

Remember, investing to yield the best returns often proves to be a marathon, not a sprint. ‘Chasing candles’, a term given

to those who buy and sell based on market fluctuations for short-term gains, will rarely help you to achieve your long-term financial objectives. The primary failure that could be ascribed to this strategy is how it is often driven by emotion. Having a clear objective to stay in the markets for the long term can negate the effect of short-term

volatility.

Warren Buffet said, “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful”. This statement may have been offered to show the importance of perspective. While some may claim Buffet does not panic because he is wealthy, others could state that he is wealthy because he does not panic.

A DIVERSIFIED APPROACH

A significant amount of data suggests that a well-diversified portfolio of investments will help you achieve better long-term returns. It may be tempting to stick to UK investments and with assets you are familiar with, but this approach, where your investment capital is concentrated in one area, potentially increases risk.

Remember that different assets and regions generally perform differently. A diversified portfolio can help to mitigate the drop in value of a particular investment, asset type, sector or region, or even offset the loss with the gain of another to bring overall profit.

Familiarise yourself with all options – from sustainable projects with an ethos you support to tax-efficient structures that will help you to maintain the lifestyle you are used to. If you feel a little unsure about how best to structure your portfolio for a life in Spain, taking specialist advice can help.

AVOIDING FOMO

The fear of missing out (FOMO) can be a strong motivator for making bad decisions.

Unexpected bull runs in a region or sector, or sharp market rises

hyped up by journalists and commentators, can create a strong desire to join in rather than risk regretting that you did not take the opportunity.

The problem often is that it has already happened; you are too late – you may have bought at or near the market peak. Just because a particular asset or sector experiences rapid, short-term growth, there is no guarantee it will continue. Quite the contrary, a market correction often takes place shortly after an event such as this, causing the price to drop as quickly as it had risen as the market or sector has been over-inflated.

A leading cause of FOMO is the ‘buzz’ generated around a particular asset, usually via the internet and social media, but it rarely comes from an expert source. This can lead people to make impulse decisions to invest in a concentrated way, rather than have the reduced risk a diversified portfolio can bring.

TAX-EFFICIENT INVESTING FOR LIVING IN SPAIN

As mentioned, it is important to structure your investments specifically around your new circumstances, objectives, time horizon and risk tolerance, and this also includes taxation. The

way you hold investments can make a surprising difference to how much tax you pay.

You need to understand the Spanish tax regime – and there are tax-efficient opportunities available to residents of Spain.

One of the more popular options is a Spanish-approved life assurance contract, which acts as a wrapper for a conventional portfolio. With a policy such as this in place, no tax is payable on income derived from the underlying asset until withdrawal, and even then, only the gain would be liable to tax.

TAKE PERSONALISED, INTEGRATED INVESTMENT AND TAX PLANNING ADVICE FOR SPAIN.

These views are put forward for consideration purposes only as the suitability of any investment is dependent on the investment objectives, time horizon and attitude to risk of the investor. The value of investments can fall as well as rise, as can the income arising from them. Past performance should not be seen as an indication of future performance. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. e

NOW OPEN FOR DINNER

House of Flow is now offering a dinner menu from Wednesday to Saturday from 7pm until midnight, with events every week, live music and great food. Chef Paco has concocted a concise menu that we got to sample recently which did justice to the exemplary surrounds.

We were warmly welcomed by Darryn’s partner, Isabel Denegri, who hails from Peru, and began with a lovely Vegetable Tempura with Soy and Honey which was a great sharing platter, comprising courgette, red pepper, onion, aubergine and mushrooms in a crunchy tempura batter made from gluten-free flour. This was followed with a round of Beef and Chicken Tacos which really hit the spot, coming with chipotle chilli mayonnaise and a side of

guacamole. The beef, having been slow-cooked for eight hours, had a soft tender texture while the chicken was nicely spiced, with small red beans.

Our appetites nicely piqued, the main courses didn’t disappoint in presentation or flavour. The Galician Beef Tenderloin, cooked to succulent perfection, is served with yummy truffle sauce and a seasonal vegetable terrine, while the 72º Codfish features a large flaky cod fillet cooked on a low heat with black garlic mousseline au gratin, served with a panoply of crisp vegetables.

We ended a memorable meal with a special dessert – Coconut Avocado With Lime Essence & Cookie Crumble, comprising a mouthwatering array of fairly addictive flavours. ›

JUAN ANTONIO MEDINA

OF TATEL: TAKING THE JOY OF SPANISH CUISINE WORLDWIDE

Juan Antonio Medina is Grupo TATEL’s new international Executive Chef. He has been entrusted with an important goal: that of bringing exquisite Spanish cuisine to the far corners of the globe. He has the training and experience required

to lead such an ambitious project, having honed his craft alongside greats like Benjamín Urdiaín, Luis Irizar, Juan Mari Arzak, Santi Santamaría and Ferran Adrià. He has shone at Grupo Albora’s A’Barra (earning this establishment a Michelin star and a Repsol

sun) as well as the Hotel Mandarin Oriental Ritz. In his new role, he will not only be satisfying discerning palates on an international scale but also “demonstrating the wonderful moments celebrated in Spain when people gather around a table.”

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT

Juan Antonio will be part of an international expansion launched by MABEL Hospitality – the gastronomic division of Mabel Capital (whose main partners are Rafael Nadal, Manuel Campos Guallar, and Abel Matutes). Its TATEL group of restaurants has establishments in Madrid, Ibiza, Beverly Hills, Riyadh, and Bahrain. The group’s winning formula combines culinary excellence, leisure, top-class service and an exclusive lifestyle. It appeals to those with an appreciation of the Spanish culinary tradition.

SETTING HIS SIGHTS HIGH

The Chef was the perfect choice for the project, since he boasts experience with an enviable professional trajectory that enables him to innovate and break new ground, without foregoing the basics of excellent cuisine. He says, “I was trained in classical cuisine and have great respect for tradition. However, I enjoy adding fun, contemporary touches to my dishes.”

One of the Chef’s greatest

teachers was Benjamín Urdiaín, the Navarra-born Chef who oversaw his work at Zalacaín – the first restaurant in Madrid to obtain three Michelin stars.

Funnily enough, Juan Antonio was born in the same year that Zalacaín was founded –1973. He eventually became Head Chef of this iconic establishment, putting his creative talents to the test. He attributes much of his success to “the standards set by the magnificent team at Zalacaín.”

He spent a total of 12 years there and fondly recalls the day Urdiaín first interviewed him.

During his holidays, Juan Antonio would complete a stint at restaurants like Arzak and El Racó de Can Fabes –where he met the great Santi Santamaría. He also shared in the creative process at El Bulli and sharpened his skills at Ristorante Dal Pescatore Santini – a renowned restaurant in Canneto sull'Oglio, Italy, south of the city of Mantua. The restaurant boasts three Michelin stars.

For Juan Antonio, home base is still TATEL Madrid. There, he works alongside the

restaurant’s Head Chef, David Rodríguez. Both oversee the gastronomic offerings of the Group, prioritising sustainable, seasonal, local produce and ingredients. Juan Antonio explains, “My promotion to Global Executive Chef of Grupo TATEL was motivated by the wish to show the world that the Spanish culinary culture has much more to offer than great recipes and an impressive ingredient list. It is a way of life.” The Chef is filled with emotion at the thought of leading such a talented team: “I’m sure we’ll reap great success in the near future,” he says.

TATEL: A STAR-STUDDED GROUP

In addition to tennis star Rafael Nadal, there are more names in the TATEL Group that may sound familiar – Cristiano Ronaldo, Pau Gasol, and Rudy Fernández, to name just a few. They may come from all walks of life but they share one thing: a passion for great food and the inviting, entertaining nature of creative Spanish restaurants.

WINE WAITERS IN WAITING

THE FUTURE OF THE SOMMELIER

Anyone who has an interest in wine may be suited to the career of sommelier, even without having professional qualifications, This is a calling that is well-nigh vocational, bearing in mind that the working conditions are not appealing. Although the daily starting time is fixed, the going home time is not, and most sommeliers will be free to eat with their families only on their days off. Sommeliers are a somewhat recent innovation, but even so it has been maintained that they are not really necessary, and when in a recent radio interview, I proposed that they are potentially a dying breed, I was inundated with protests from every sommelier around, as well as from the President of the sommeliers’ association of Spain.

WORDS ANDREW LINN to
back
CONTENTSb GOURMET wine 192 / OCTOBER 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Sommeliers used to be known as wine waiters, but thanks to the plethora of educational courses offering an entrance into the profession – 41 in Andalucía alone – it is now easier to become one. Soon Spanish TV will start airing shows like those screened in the USA, in which sommeliers compete against each other in blind tastings and wine quizzes. The recent Netflix film, Somms, was a big hit, and as a result – it is claimed – sommeliers rocketed to the top of the industry’s popularity ratings in the same way chefs did two decades previously. Never mind that the four American real-life stars of Somms abandoned the profession shortly after the film was aired

The financial rewards are not overly attractive, and much less than they should be for working hours that are definitely not family-friendly. A sommelier cannot go home until the last customer has finished the final drink. Promotion prospects are also usually very limited, without moving to another location.

Disappointingly, most restaurant customers consider a sommelier’s job to be little more than taking orders, opening bottles and pouring wine. Indeed, few customers acknowledge that sommeliers are professionals with

qualifications that may have taken years to obtain. In Europe this is perhaps not important, but in the USA, membership of the Guild of Master Sommeliers is essential – and to obtain it will imply a considerable cost. The top title, Britain’s Master of Wine, is generally too good for a sommelier’s job, and the price of achieving it, roughly €18.000, is not a viable investment. In Japan the business is taken very seriously. The Japan Sommelier Association has issued 30,000 lapel pins to those who have passed their exams but was aghast to discover that fake pins were being sold online for $300,000 each.

A retired wine waiter from one of Marbella’s best-known establishments admits to little more than a rudimentary knowledge of wine. Fortunately, this wasn’t a problem since most customers never order anything beyond the same limited range of wines on the list, comprising a staple number of Riojas and Ribera del Dueros.

Sommeliers have the right to be offended if they are not treated with the respect they deserve. Usually, however, they are expected to remain reserved and to comply with what they are being asked. On the brighter side, watch the pleasure on a sommelier’s face when requested to recommend a wine, or even better, wines, to accompany a meal. As the host at a lunch the other day in a well-known Marbella restaurant instructed the sommelier, ‘Please select the wines according to the food we order, and if anyone is not happy, offer an alternative without question’. He could have added, ‘Price range: whites at a maximum 35 euros and reds up to 60 euros, and if you can surprise us, so much the better’.

Assuming that the sommeliers’ business is wine, what about the new tendency for ‘sommeliers’ for mineral water, tea, coffee, even cigars? It might be over critical to suggest that this is just a trick to inflate the bill, but it often seems like that. e
