APPLES NEVER FALL BY LIANE MORIARTY

The author of the phenomenally successful Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers is back with an engrossing novel about secrets, lies and dysfunctional families. Joy and Stan Delaney have sold their lucrative tennis academy and are ready to enjoy retirement and, hopefully grandchildren, if any of their four adult children can see fit to providing them. They do not realise that their children’s marriages may not be as happy as they thought. When Joy goes missing, her children are initially reluctant to report it to the police as they fear their father will be the prime suspect. Two of the children are convinced of their father’s innocence while the other two are not so sure. To uncover the truth about Joy’s disappearance, all the Delany’s secrets and deceptions must be revealed.

OVER MY DEAD BODY BY JEFFREY ARCHER

The fourth instalment of the bestselling DCI Warwick series. While on a cruise with his wife, DCI William Warwick must investigate when a fellow passenger dies mysteriously. Back in London, an unsolved murders unit is established, and Warwick is charged with leading the team. Top of his list is millionaire art collector and convicted forger and thief, Miles Faulkner, who appears to have resurfaced despite having died two months previously. Together with ex-undercover operative, Ross Hogan, they must solve the cold cases and catch the killers before it is too late! A tense and engaging crime novel which can be read as a stand alone despite being part of a series.

THE JEALOUSY MAN BY JO NESBO

The master of suspense is back with his first collection of short stories. The Jealousy Man features seven stories filled with avarice, envy, and revenge. A Greek detective and expert on jealousy is hunting for the man suspected of killing his twin. A taxi driver finds his wife’s earring in his boss’s car and sets out to uncover the truth. A woman planning to take her own life boards a flight to London, but who is the curious man sitting next to her? A fugitive is lured to what appears to be a wedding ceremony only to find something much more macabre. Although the collection doesn’t feature everyone’s favourite, Harry Hole, the tales are, nonetheless, intriguing, sinister, and mysterious.

CLOUD CUCKOO LAND BY ANTHONY DOERR

From the Pulitzer Prize winning author of All the Light we Cannot See comes an epic story of hope and survival spanning centuries. Anna and Omeir are teenagers caught up in the siege of Constantinople in the 1400s. Zeno’s story follows him from his childhood as an immigrant orphan to his time as a POW in the Vietnam war and finally to old age where is helping children put on a play in a library. Seymour’s tragic story overlaps with Zeno’s with terrible consequences. Konstance is a child living in isolation in the future, hoping for a better life. All the stories are bound together by the ancient Greek myth of Cloud Cuckoo Land which tells of a shepherd trying to reach a utopia in the sky. It is, according to Doerr, “…part fairytale, part fool’s errand, part science fiction, part utopian satire…”. It is utterly compelling and a delight to read.

THREE SISTERS BY HEATHER MORRIS

Heather Morris has returned with the final instalment in her Auschwitz trilogy by that began with The Tattooist of Auschwitz and continued with Cilka’s Journey. It is based on the true story of three sisters, Cibi, Magda and Livi, who made a promise to their father before he died that they would always look out for each other. Years later, 15-year-old Livi is ordered to Auschwitz. Cibi, refusing to leave her sister, follows her while Magda hides until she is eventually caught and sent to the same camp. The sisters’ reunion is bittersweet as the horrors of the camp become their daily normality. The promise they made to their father gives them the hope and determination to survive and stay together no matter the odds. A heart-breaking and heartwarming story of hope, courage and love, told with empathy and compassion. It is a trilogy in name only as each book can be read independently. e
