FIJI

PACIFIC ISLAND PARADISE

Fiji conjures up images of a dreamy landscape, dazzling beaches, a salubrious climate and a country blessed with warm and hospitable people. The average Fijian is so friendly that falling in love with this speck of paradise becomes a truly graceful act of conversion, which is far, far removed from the cut throat jet set corporate world. WORDS SUBHASISH CHAKRABORTY

T

his island nation comprises as many as 320 islands, many of which are uninhabited. The main island is Vitu Levu with its capital city Suva, which interestingly has two names – in the east the city is referred to as Suva while in the west as Nadi. Nadi is actually the point of entry to Fiji as the international airport is located here from where visitors disperse to their chosen islands. Fiji with a population of 900,000 is an eclectic mix of native Fijians (56%) and Indians (38%). Other races like Europeans, Rotumans, Chinese and Pacific Islanders make for a truly diverse racial mix. ›

The average Fijians are of Melanesian origin, with a blend of Polynesian, which is predominant in Eastern Fiji. The spirit of Fijian wanderlust is best epitomised by the fact that families trace their ancestry through 11 generations – it invariably starts with migrant sea people who sailed to the Fijian shores from far-away lands and gradually settled down in

Well, generally the Polynesians are tall and well built, possess fair skin and straight hair, while the Melanesians are shorter and darker skinned. ›

LACAULA – WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF THE SUPER RICH Back in 1972, billionaire business magnate Malcolm Forbes bought this idyllic retreat and transformed Laucala as his private sanctuary. Its present owner, Red Bull mogul Dietrich Mateschitz, has left no stone unturned in fashioning a magnificent island hideaway, resulting in top end luxury that guarantees total privacy. Out here in serene Laucala, each of the 25 villas are all sensational adaptations of time-honoured Fijian residences.

30 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

In the words of Dietrich himself, “Our integral philosophy encompasses the whole island, growing our own livestock and vegetables, caring for the environment and hand making all our own guest products using the island´s natural resources. We have tried to preserve the integrity and history of Laucala in this way”. Truly, Laucala epitomises eco-tourism exemplification. Each carefully crafted villa comes with its own private pool and once inside, the distinctive Fijian décor takes your breath

away – be it the sofa sets or the bathtub! Tell me, which island hideaway can lay claim to cook any plausible meal for you? Laucala does that, literally! Comprising 3,500 acres of coconut plantations and green rolling hills, alongside dreamlike stretches of sandy beaches, here the switch from indoor

to outdoor is one of the most harmonious, unmatched by other island hideaways largely due to the resort’s respect, admiration and commitment for vernacular Fijian architecture. No wonder that Condé Nast Traveler has ranked Laucala as a top 20 Resort in the Australia/Pacific region. ›

According to The Telegraph: “This private-island holiday home of Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz is almost kitsch in its perfection: four squaremiles of private forest and coconut groves, cut through with a golf course, pools and waterfalls. With just 25 villas, and almost 350 staff, the service is as glorious as

32 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

the island’s setting”. Laucala is remote – to the north of the archipelago and surrounded by coral reefs and lush green mangrove forest – making it ideal for an escape from civilisation and embracing a paradigm culture and nature shift. Evolving as Fiji’s largest tourism development project ever, Dietrich’s passion for everything big and expansive finds reflection in the resort’s in-house submarine with shark sighting a regular phenomenon. This sevenmetre semi-submersible submarine reportedly cost $2 million.

Here in Laucala, privacy is of the utmost importance. The impeccably appointed residences or ‘Bures’ as they are referred to in the local Fijian parlance, have been rather meticulously crafted, relying predominantly on locally available materials like bamboo, cane, etc. For the quintessential foodie, Laucala’s offerings are simply irresistible and they make good use of the island’s organic produce as fruits and vegetables are all sourced from the resort’s signature kitchen garden. Apart from an enticing array of nouveau international cuisine, you can experience many authentic Fijian dishes.

The principal dining venue is a thoroughly renovated old plantation residence and needless to say the service too is every bit as colonial. The culinary norm here is that all meals are nicely complemented with wines and spirits to match the dining temperament. Sensitive to the guests’ spirt of wanderlust and curiosity for things Fijian, the Laucala authorities offer truly immersive cultural experiences in their own private culture

village where traditional Fijian dance, drama and musical performances are staged. The Kava ceremony in particular is an outright hit with guests as they partake of the centuries old traditional drink of Fiji from the community bowl. For those desiring a Spa treatment, the Laucala Wellness Spa has four suites, all with shower and changing rooms. The mesmerising views from the clifftop are every bit as stunning. The

best part of the Laucala Spa is that all the herbs and flowers are grown in the resort’s in-house gardens. Dietrich’s love for Golf meant that the 18-hole Championship golf course at Laucala had to be world class and so he roped in Scotsman David McLay-Kidd to design and construct it. PGA professionals support golfers at Laucala and what is more, a chauffeur and nanny are on call too. ›

Zuckerberg’s new idea is the Metaverse

THE METAVERSE

ECHOES FROM THE FUTURE WORDS MICHEL CRUZ

J

ust three months ago, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the official renaming of his company to Meta Platforms. It seemed a bold move for a large corporation that pretty much dominates the social media scene and can

boast over a billion users. The question arises: why did Facebook feel the need to change the name and direction of a company with $85 billion in revenue? Surely its existing business model is lucrative enough? Well, in 2019 the firm launched

44 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Facebook Horizon, a social media-based virtual reality world, and the potential it sees in the metaverse is obviously such that Zuckerberg et al believe this is the future – not just for their business, but for the entire Internet. ›

If it’s up to the likes of Facebook, the Internet as we’ve come to know it is on the verge of a new revolution in which it, social media and gaming are melded into one great immersive virtual world.

WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 45

D SPOTLIGHT metaverse

back to CONTENTS

WHAT IS THE METAVERSE? To come to grips with the current buzz surrounding this term one has to have a clear understanding of its meaning. The word metaverse was first used in the 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash, as a combination, or portmanteau, of meta and universe. In principle it is a network of virtual worlds seen and experienced in 3D, and since the 1990s has already been regarded as the natural evolution of the Internet. Something that the likes of Facebook and Microsoft clearly agree with, given the wholesale refocusing of the former’s business mission and the latter’s acquisition of AltspaceVR in 2017. This social virtual reality (VR) platform first founded

in 2013 now forms part of Microsoft’s Mixed Reality (MR) division, whose plans to develop a multidimensional, fully immersible virtual reality social media and internet experience are almost as ambitious as those of Facebook, I mean Meta. In acquiring this name, Zuckerberg has almost appropriated the concept, but this is by no means the first venture into a virtual reality world based not so much upon gaming but upon social and even economic interaction. Second Life, launched back in 2003, is generally regarded as the first iteration of the Metaverse, and as such serves as an interesting pioneering prototype.

SECOND LIFE The creator of Linden Lab, Philip Rosedale, had been working on software that would enable people to create their own parallel life experiences in a 3D virtual world in the late 1990s, and it culminated in the launch of Second Life. Rather than a game or a dating site, Second Life provided a Sim City-like social landscape in which so-called residents could interact with one another, buy or build their own homes, cars and businesses, invent things, trade and attend cultural events, constructing virtual communities along the way that not only added to or replaced real-world social life, but sometimes even led to actual friendships. Linden Labs’ Second Life is considered to be the first Metaverse prototype

46 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

The idea took off among tech-savvy people and by the end of the decade it counted a million users, with up to 50,000 or more people online at any one time. They trade in Linden dollars (L$) and can even redeem these tokens through PayPal, or among one another in real currency, and in so doing this virtual society has built up an ‘economy’ worth $500 million. Though still used by a loyal following of well over half a million, Second Life never broke through the way Facebook and others did because it is more digitalimmersive and aimed at adults, who typically find it more challenging to share online

experiences with strangers than youngsters do on their multiple player gaming platforms. Other challenges had a more technical background, such as the standard of the graphics, server issues when large numbers of people were

interacting, and VR headsets that remain too cumbersome to be easily portable. In fact, the very man who championed the creation of online multimedia platforms cancelled further development of Sansar in 2020, effectively abandoning what would have been the next version of Second Life. He also raises questions about the far-reaching ambitions of Microsoft, Facebook and others in relation to turning the internet into one huge connected VR world.

A NEW BEGINNING? Besides technical and practical challenges, Rosedale fears problems on a societal level, citing the potential that metaverse could have to greatly worsen existing problems of internet addiction, social isolation, exploitation, harassment and online privacy and security. They are worries shared by many others, who fear that the metaverse, as proposed by the large tech corporations, would lead not to greater freedom and independence of content, but to enhanced centralisation of this vital resource in the hands of a few mega-multinationals

48 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

with the potential to monopolise both information and its commercialisation. Rosedale finds the use of the metaverse for advertising and personal data purposes worrying indeed, but right now such cautionary voices are being drowned out by the noises of excitement created by big tech and media alike. Just weeks ago, Disney was given permission by US federal authorities to develop its own virtual reality space and metaverse experiences at its theme parks. As an entertainment company with advanced technological capabilities, Disney is well placed to take advantage of this

potentially lucrative new field, but they’re not the only ones, as it seems like everyone from Facebook and Microsoft to Apple and Google wants a piece of the action. In spite of all the hype, experts such as Philip Rosedale, creator of the first prototype metaverse, believe the technology is just not there yet to realise the visions of a multidimensional, interconnected and fully immersible internet/metaverse, and maybe that’s just as well, as it seems we may need to think hard about the technologies we want for the future before irreversibly ‘immersing’ ourselves in them. e

THE 70S ROCK PHENOMENON

It is said that the 1960s was the ultimate decade of wild psychedelia, but in reality it was the period between the end of that decade and the first half of the 1970s – an era of untamed, unfettered excess and experimentation that truly gave birth to the concept of Rock. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ

LED ZEPPELIN

Arguably the most legendary of all 70s rock groups, this band formed in London in 1968 made cultural icons out of guitarist Jimmy Page and singer Robert Plant, whose style as frontman of the band so embodies the era. His high-pitched but powerful vocals similarly echo a time forever cast in musical and social history, producing timeless anthems such as the chilling Stairway to Heaven, which helped the band sell 300 million albums. In 1977, Zep set a world record indoor attendance of almost 80,00, and they could almost do it again today, so undying has been the following. ›

PINK FLOYD If Led Zeppelin’s raw sound was rock in its purest form, instilled though it was with the symphonic grandeur typical of the (later) era, then Pink Floyd’s music was rock infused with an otherworldly, ethereal quality derived from the band’s early experimentation with electronic synthesisers. Melancholic rather than angry, Pink Floyd’s sound however found a classic expression of passionate political stance in Another Brick in the Wall, a track whose message is perhaps even more thought-provoking than it was in 1979. A quarter of a billion albums later, Pink Floyd remains one of the pillars upon which modern music was built.

Formed (also in London) in 1970, Queen originally looked more like a Glam Rock band but soon merged rock and pop to become one of the greatest acts of all time. Though guitarist Brian May can be called the brains of the operation, it was the artistic genius and charisma of frontman Freddie Mercury that sent this multifaceted outfit into higher planes of success. Some may regard the band as too commercial and light to be considered a true rock band, but listen to their earlier creations and it’s very clear that, during the classic 1970s era at least, this was a group of artists very much rooted in the new British rock scene of the time, and in the process they have gone on to inspire much of what followed.

QUEEN

ACROSS THE ATLANTIC As had been happening since the birth of rock & roll and pop music back in the 1950s, British and American music continued to crossfertilise, sending inspiration back and forth across the Atlantic as both old and new world vied for world domination in (rock) music. As

always in matters of art and taste, there is no definitive ‘winner’, but rather a profusion of creativity that came out of this musical rivalry and the social setting it was cast within. And don’t underestimate the influence of drugs, for this was the ultimate psychedelic era. ›

AEROSMITH

We tend to think of Aerosmith as an 80s or maybe even 90s band, but these rockers have been around since 1970 and unlike many others have basically retained the same line-up ever since. The faces of the band are enigmatic American rock heroes Steven Tyler (vocals) and Joe Perry (guitar), and they’ve been hailed as the country’s Rock and Roll band, fusing elements of blues, pop, R&B and even glam metal into their animated

bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Doobie Brothers had a more southern Tex-Mex sound, Aerosmith represents the urban rock tradition of the USA, heading up a list that includes the likes of Journey, Foreigner and Van Halen. ›

THE EAGLES

D SPOTLIGHT music

To be fair, The Eagles were not all that ‘hard-sounding’ themselves, for this was a pop/rock band born out of a country tradition, but so huge was their commercial success and their impact on the American music scene that they’re hard to ignore. Essentially a Californian band formed in LA in 1971, their skirting between rock, pop and country had a more polished tone than the raw hillbilly appeal of CCR and co, making The Eagles one of the most successful bands ever – a fact that recently even led to their Greatest Hits becoming the best-selling album of all time!

56 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

FLEETWOOD MAC

Even ‘softer’ and more romantically inclined than The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac is also a truly Transatlantic (BritishAmerican) group that rose to new heights of fame as it blended mainstream pop with elements of rock. This led to over 100 million album sales and a following that remains faithful to this day. The band’s heyday, like that of many of its contemporaries, continued into the 1980s, but by then they had already acquired a classic/legendary status earned in the formative early 1970s. Fleetwood Mac was also different in that its definitive line-up includes two women, Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks, maybe the reason why its creations were that little bit more harmonious and happy.

There are many other rock stars, icons and pioneers of the classic rock genre that have helped to shape not only that era, but everything that has come since, but the ones mentioned above form the inner core of a movement that affected not only music, but also fashion, art, (youth) culture, as well as social and political thinking, creating a societal watershed that not even the Beatles can emulate. e

THE STAR

FROM AFAR Priyanka Chopra reveals the strands that have woven together to form a brilliant career, and admits that despite success and happiness, self-doubt still remains.

60 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

W

hen you’re the third most-followed actress on Twitter, with 27 million global followers, your presence online comes with a certain level of responsibility. Fans hang on your every word, charitable initiatives can accelerate beyond all comprehension at a mere hint of approval, while politically, our A-list influencers, by their own admission, hold far too much sway. Social media is a world in which connectivity is greater than ever before, and when managed well, it’s a very useful thing. “I was one of the first to really embrace Twitter and this new form of communication because I could see the benefits from both sides,” says Bollywood/Hollywood icon, Priyanka Chopra. “My values as a person mean I always want to interact with people and share this incredible passion we all have for entertainment and drama, and I could see there was a real two-way street suddenly available for being able to do that.” “At the same time, I also realised the benefits of opening up and being less aloof. I felt, as an industry, we needed to do that… we needed to come back down to earth a bit, and I believe we’ve achieved that.”

Certainly, the film industry’s various internal crises – played out very publicly – have led it to reconsider its lofty position. From #metoo scandals to equality and diversity disputes, through to distributors’ very public worries over finance in the wake of the Covid pandemic, Tinseltown’s preening and posturing has come down a rung or two… not that Priyanka ever wanted to be part of that set, as her early adoption of social media proves. “As a child, I was taught that whatever you do and whoever you are, you have to show humility whenever possible,” she says. “India treats its celebrities like Gods, and I felt that to be quite uncomfortable.” “When I moved into Western film [Priyanka landed the lead role on the hit American Fox TV series Quantico in 2015, having already been a major star in her native India] the media attention went up another level, but I did sense there was a

more controlled degree of fan appreciation, and I think I needed that, because to keep my career in India would have been quite suffocating.” As a now instantly recognisable star of box office hits across both Bollywood and Hollywood – thanks in no small part to films such as Baywatch, A Kid Like Jake, We Can Be Heroes, Isn’t It Romantic and The Matrix Resurrections, Priyanka can strike a sensible balance between the glitz, glamour and escapism of LA on one side, and on the other, the pride she retains for her Asian roots. “They are not worlds that you feel would instantly connect, but I am proud of my traditions and my heritage in India, as well as excited about what I can go on to achieve in the global cinema market,” she says. “Naturally I feel very proud to have been able to cross over between the two, as that is not something that is done too frequently. “It certainly makes me happy to be able to show people my Indian background and to share that world with others.” As a result, sitting down with the actress, singer, film producer and philanthropist is a serene, relaxed and respectful experience. Sure, she may live in LA with musician husband Nick Jonas, with the couple having just announced the birth of their first child through a surrogate – their baby girl arrived in the middle of January, some 12 weeks early – yet beyond the stardom and wealth exists someone still very much centred in religion, philanthropy and, of course, family. › “I think it comes down to always remembering where you’ve come from,” she says. “I had a very passionate and proud upbringing, and my ambition has never taken me away from those ideals.” “My parents and family have always been so supportive of me, and it’s always been in me to be ambitious, but identity is so important too and I have so much admiration and respect for people in this industry who are able to hold on to the fabric of who they are.” Praise for Priyanka, who celebrates her 40th birthday in July, comes from all quarters. Baywatch co-star Dwayne Johnson said of the actress: “I’ve been in the business a long time and I’ve worked with a lot of stars, and only a handful are as driven and as sharply focused and ambitious as Priyanka. It’s intoxicating – you want to be around it because it inspires you and pushes you.”

62 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

In fact, the actress’s willingness to step outside of her comfort zone has left her with a filmography that patterns huge successes with, by her own admission, catastrophic failures… not that she minds. “I’ve always understood the unpredictability of this business and I try not to take it too seriously. I’ve been through many highs and lows over the years and have learnt you must be ready to overcome your failures and make the most of whatever opportunities come your way. That’s all I’m trying to do.” As far as the immediate landscape stands, Priyanka’s focus is clearly on enjoying those precious early weeks and months with her child. Sources suggest the couple’s route to get to this point has been complicated and, at times, painful, and in preparation for her arrival, the star has been wrapping up various work commitments so she can approach 2022 with an absolute

focus on her baby girl. Certainly, the Amazonbroadcast Citadel, which is set for launch in April, is in the can. The sci-fi spy thriller is expected to give the actress one of her biggest hits yet – she stars alongside Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci in what is a compelling and evolving drama that leads out the channel’s spring activity. Movie Text for You is also completed. The feelgood British film stars the likes of Celine Dion, Sam Heughan, Russell Tovey, Omid Djalili and Celia Imrie, and again patterns Priyanka’s desire to mix up the entertainment industry’s various genres. “I think that desire to choose very different projects comes from the way I was raised,” she says. “There were influences clashing all over the place, and it gave me a passion to try them all!” The star grew up in India where she was raised by her parents

“As women, we are constantly nervous about our appearance. We’re never really 100% happy with our looks, but the best advice I ever had was to accept myself first and foremost, then look at my flaws not as weaknesses, but as things that make me unique. Approval should never come from others – it must start from within” Ashok and Madhu Chopra, both doctors, with both Hindi and English spoken at home. She spent most of her teenage years in Boston where she went to high school and was initially interested in becoming a software engineer before winning the Miss World title in 2000, setting her on course to becoming one of Bollywood’s top female film stars. ›

effort, and that’s something I’ve always invested into my auditions and projects. The very first and most crucial step is to show you care and have determination.” For someone who receives praise from all quarters no matter what she does, it is perhaps surprising to hear that Priyanka has a very reserved opinion when it comes to her looks. “I was never of the opinion that I was beautiful as a child, and I don’t think that way about myself now,” she says with absolute conviction. “What I will say though is I believe

that you can teach yourself to be the best version of yourself over time, and that’s what I have tried to do.” “As women, we are constantly nervous about our appearance. We’re never really 100% happy with our looks, but the best advice I ever had was to accept myself first and foremost, then look at my flaws not as weaknesses, but as things that make me unique.” “Approval should never come from others – it must start from within.” Try telling that to 27 million Twitter followers! e

a model designation, right down to Tesla with its Model 3 EV BMW’s EV experience goes back further than most people realise and history records that an electric 1600 was used at the Munich Olympics in 1972 to lead a field of long-distance runners who would not have appreciated the emissions from a conventional vehicle. This was, of course,

a one-off, but BMW continued to experiment with EVs and was more than ready for the demands of the years ahead. Various experimental EVs followed, including the excellent little E1 concept, which we drove in the early 1990s. The E1 never made it to a production line but two standouts did, the compact 2013 i3 and the sports supercar i8 launched the same year. The car may be totally new, but styling is very much traditional BMW. To the chagrin of many, especially the enthusiast fraternity, the company has adopted an oversized interpretation of its trademark kidney-shaped grille. This new approach is not helped by the number plate location, but apart from this point, the car is handsome and sporty in a satisfying purposeful manner. There are two basic i4 variants: an entry-level model that uses a single electric motor and an i4 M50 performance option using two electric motors. Think of the latter as an electric BMW M model – a sports saloon with extra response and more agile

handling. In fact, the M50 uses M suspension, steering, braking and even has M light alloy wheels. The base car develops 335-horsepower and drives the rear wheels in conventional fashion. The M50 produces 544-horsepower and features all-wheel drive. According to BMW, the base car has a range of 590-km and the M50, 521km, but only market experience will confirm these figures. By comparison, a Tesla Model 3 Long Range has a claimed

range of 507-km. Expectedly, the interior features one of the best layouts BMW currently offers with numerous tech updates and the kind of grippy seating demanded by a taut-handling sports saloon. Comfort features include acoustic glazing to cut back on road noise plus pre-heating and air-conditioning. These are practical touring cars too, with a base boot space of 470-litres, expandable to 1,290-litres.

Infotainment is taken care of via a curved panoramic touch screen that uses quite an area of dashboard real estate. Apart from electronics, the car has that wonderful BMW ambiance the company has refined over the decades and although this is a state-of-the-art EV, BMW enthusiasts will feel at home behind the wheel as soon as they climb in. Drivers who miss the sound of a silky smooth

twin-cam inline six-cylinder engine under the bonnet of their BMW will be quickly compensated by the car’s near-silent delivery of instantly available full power. Quite apart from the contribution it makes to the environment, the i4 series promises to be as much fun to drive as any other sporty BMW we’ve seen over the past few decades. Watch for more EVs like this from BMW, right across the company’s model ranges. e

The popularity of fitness apps grew by 46% within the first year of the pandemic, with experts predicting that the fitness scene will change permanently owing to the burgeoning popularity of home fitness solutions. As is the case with many remote services, home gyms have become somewhat of a norm in many households, since little more is required than a few weights and resistance equipment, a stationery bike, treadmill, or rowing machine. Apps such as Kinomap and iFit are helping home fitness aficionados feel far more confident about their workouts, with features such as personalised nutrition plans, virtual workout sessions, and social networking making the experience similar to working out at a gym, without the fuss of having to leave your home. EMBRACING HOME FITNESS WITH THE KINOMAP AND IFIT APPS KINOMAP: A ONE-STOP SHOP FOR PERSONAL HEALTH AND FITNESS Kinomap is a free app that is available on most treadmills, rowing machines, exercise bikes, and other enabled gym equipment with Bluetooth connectivity. Once you are signed up, you are offered a host of workouts to choose from – so many, you would probably not be able to complete all of them in your lifetime. Imagine cycling through a realistic scenario where mountain and ocean views surround you. As you do so, the app adjusts the difficulty of your workout (increasing slope, wind

resistance, and the like) in accordance with the physical characteristics of the actual route you are completing. You can complete your workout while viewing your tablet, smart TV, or smartphone. The routes are real, having been filmed across the globe by the app developers. As such, you can roam around the world, running in Central Park, cycling along Tour de France routes, or rowing by islands on the Pacific. It all depends on what you feel like seeing and completing on a given day. Workouts vary in length and intensity and it is very easy to choose a different

workout if the one you have chosen is a bit too hard or easy. Kinomap has an added bonus: its thriving community. You can take part in group classes, create your own friend group, and share goals and results with those who cheer you on and inspire you to be your best. Although the app is free to download, it does have payment plans to access a wide range of workouts. Currently, you can obtain a one-year subscription for around €90 though shorter and longer plans are also available. i www.kinomap.com

IFIT AND THE POWER OF INTERACTIVITY iFit is similar to Kinomap, in that it allows you to take part in sessions led by virtual instructors or complete a host of routes along some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes. It hooks up to specific machines by Proform and Nordictrack and can be viewed on your chosen device. Many users find that tablets are the ideal size since they can be connected to equipment and provide a better viewing experience than smaller phones.

iFit is divided into four main categories: exercise, nutrition, activity, and sleep. This makes sense considering that when one of these four lifestyle factors is lacking in quality, all the rest are affected. In the exercise/ sports category, you will find an array of personalised workouts with interactive elements. For instance, if you are using a bike, you will feel its resistance changing in line with the specific workout you have chosen. You can also pair this app with your fitness activity tracker if you wish

92 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

to receive important tips on how to burn more calories, be more physically active, and improve your fitness as a whole. Your activity tracker can additionally be used to help you discover if your sleep quantity and quality are sufficient. Finally, you can opt for personalised nutrition plans that align with your workout goals. iFit works with Google Maps as well, so you can plan your own routes and view completed ones using Google Street View. The app will then adjust the resistance

and incline of your equipment appropriately. Finally, iFit invites you to take part in a host of video workouts led by qualified instructors. From Olympians to personal trainers and even professional athletes, the team is truly impressive and vast, making it easy to choose trainers you find particularly motivating. All of this is available for a small membership fee (less than €150 a year per person, with special prices available for families). i www.ifit.com

lot of companies claim to be specialist professionals aimed at the upper segment, but many make compromises along the way and end up covering broad spectrums of the market. In other words, they are forced to work to set business formulas that to varying degrees contradict the bespoke nature of the luxury segment. MFG Group is an exception to this rule, as it is a self-financing developer free of the pressures of outside funding that manages product design, construction, detailing and sales within a single boutique firm. ›

In this case boutique refers to the manner of working, not the scale, as VIP Estates and the MFG Development Company and design studio that form part of the MFG Group have made a significant contribution to Marbella’s stock of luxury homes over the past 20 years. In fact, the company was creating modern villas long before it became the trend, and has an impressive portfolio of made-to-measure

luxury properties to its name in the finest locations Marbella has to offer, including Nueva Andalucía, La Zagaleta, El Madroñal, Sierra Blanca and the Golden Mile.

LUXURY SPELT WITH A Q The cornerstone of the properties presented by the MFG Group is quality. “Superb styling and amenities are a given in this segment of the market,” says company

founder and CEO, Paul Bramley, “but what really makes the properties you create stand out is quality. Quality in detail, in finishing and in concept, all the way from the drawing table to the moment you hand over the keys, and this includes the service provided along the way.” He has built his reputation as the leader of quality development in this region upon spelling luxury with a Q. › La Villa: A private spa fit for a resort hotel

La Villa: The ultimate Marbella lifestyle setting

Working on up to ten projects at a time, along with his wife they lead architects, engineers, project managers, technical specialists, experienced building crews, landscapers, interior stylists, lawyers, tax advisors and a sales and marketing team headed by Carmen Lee at VIP Estates. “Having everything in-house, including the construction company, means that we have full control over the quality, the procedural processes, the materials used and the

attention to detail, and it is in this that we can boast standards that are hard to match.”

“MARBELLA IS A JEWEL” The MFG Group uses this competitive edge to cater to a growing number of buyers of modern luxury villas either built to measure or skilfully modernised in prime locations in and around Marbella. “Marbella has always offered a setting, climate and lifestyle that is hard to equal elsewhere,” says Paul, “yet

since Covid it has added even more impetus to enjoy its quality of life among those who can.” Increasingly, they are younger professionals and entrepreneurs making use of modern working tools to live or spend extended periods of time in our region. “They’re bringing with them a sense of understated modern luxury and comfort that fits in well with what we have always championed and produced, and collectively this is giving rise to a ‘new luxury’ that is less brash and more

SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN ROOTED IN RESPECT Respect is not a word often bandied about in the décor world, but it has been the cornerstone of Scandinavian, and in particular Danish design since its original modern revolution over 50 years ago. As then, this design school continues to lead the way in terms of sustainability, natural sensory-based materials, textures and colour tones, as well as ergonomic shapes and furnishings made with style and wellbeing in mind – in other words, respect for nature and mankind alike. It’s part of the ethos the Scandinavian region has become famous for, and with it comes a code of conduct that stretches all the way into the

supply chain from working conditions within the company and its suppliers through to ethical materials sourcing, manufacturing and transportation. “Over 60 years of experience and know-how provide invaluable benefits for optimising quality and value in everything from clever design and ethical sourcing to sensible production practices,” says Jan. “This means that the furnishings and design elements we sell not only have good sustainability credentials but also represent style and quality, and this is extended to the interior design, bespoke furnishing and installation services that we pride ourselves upon.” BoConcept aims to offer great design and quality for a fair price, but always remains true to its principles, and works with suppliers that share this philosophy. ›

CONTINUED EVOLUTION Together, they strive to improve both the product lines and the service, developing new materials and using novel technologies just as they embrace natural ones in order to limit the impact on the environment while offering their customers durable, beautiful home design pieces. “We work with leading established and young designers in Denmark and internationally to continuously evolve and improve our product ranges,” says Jan Petersen, “and 116 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

right now this also involves a celebration of some of the most iconic designs that have helped to establish the BoConcept name.” The award-winning designers have been given free rein to create a new generation of BoConcept classics that are the embodiment of great design – elegant, well-considered products that reflect our time and add value to our lives while also minimising the impact on the environment. They have had an incredible palette to work with, including a wealth of

materials, leathers, colours and customisation options, many of which are passed on to buyers of BoConcept chairs, sofas, beds, cupboards, tables, desks and many other individual items. The emphasis is on an increasingly sensory experience, where colours and tactile materials help to create an ambience, soothe the senses and also look great. “This season, the tones and shades are deeper, warmer, richer, with wine-red, deep orange and natural greens setting the tone.

Also of vital importance to us is the range and quality of the fabrics and leathers, whose luscious finish is indeed the finishing touch to any important piece in the home,” says Jan. “It’s no use for the design to be inspiring if the quality and finish does not match it.”

CREATING HOME DECORS BoConcept has long since shifted its focus from designing individual furniture pieces to creating home décor concepts, and in so doing it has moved

from simple decoration to producing lifestyle-orientated living environments – home ambiences in which to feel comfortable, cosy, happy and yes, special. “The home is our one personal, private domain, an environment we have the power to mould and create in accordance with our aesthetic and lifestyle preferences, and more and more people realise this should amount to surrounding yourself with a space that makes you feel good.” Balance and joy are more

important than ever in these times, and natural green plays an important anchor colour around which multi-toned decors can be created, but at the end of the day your home is the one place where you don’t have to conform and can just be yourself, so why not use the palette that BoConcept places at your disposal and have fun with it? A new fabric to come out of the design centre is Skagen, named for the amazing natural light that this northern coastal tip of Denmark is famous for. ›

NARS

A CELEBRATION OF ONE-OF-A-KIND BEAUTY The history of NARS is not unique but that doesn’t make it any less fascinating. How many brands (think Natasha Denona, Charlotte Tilbury, or Anastasia Beverly Hills) were launched by beauticians who couldn’t quite find the products they dreamed of using? The world’s great makeup artists have all shared a talent for combining colours and an ability to define characteristics of products beauty consumers crave – from ultra high-covesrage foundations to long-lasting lipsticks and eyeshadows. NARS is no different in this sense and although it is known for many things, one of its biggest claims to fame is the quality of its foundations, which strike the perfect balance between coverage and natural radiance. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

PAYING LIP SERVICE NARS was founded in 1994 by French artist, François Nars, who honed his craft at the Carita Makeup School in Paris. He was obsessed with colour, purity, and texture and decided to release a small collection of just 12 lipsticks. They were a big hit, prompting the brand to

132 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

amplify its range with a selection of high-fashion, luxury items that can be used for everyday and sophisticated events alike. In the year 2000, Shiseido Cosmetics acquired NARS, launching a further company, NARSskin, in 2002. Today, the brand is present in 37 countries across the globe.

with super matte, shimmering, and latex-effect shades), and Sheer Glow Foundation (which lends skin a satinlike finish). If you are after something a bit lighter, try the Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser, which boasts a light coverage and has an SPF of 30+. A personal favourite that always sits in my makeup bag is the Radiant Creamy Concealer, which withstands the summer heat as well as the cold winds of winter. This product is long-wearing and hydrating, and it won’t crack as the hours go by.

WHO USES NARS? NARS is a firm favourite at Big Four catwalks. It is also part of the ample makeup collections of stars and celebrities from Los Angeles, New York, and beyond. Just a few who have voiced their passion for some of the brand’s products include Kim K, Meghan Markle, and Emma Stone.

WHICH PRODUCTS ARE NARS BEST KNOWN FOR? Unlike brands like Anastasia Beverly Hills (known for its vibrant shades) or Urban Decay (famed for its nude-hued palettes), NARS cannot be pigeonholed in terms of colour. It has both neutral, everyday-focused palettes, as well as dazzlingly bright cheek palettes, lipsticks, and eyeshadows. One product range it is particularly renowned for is its highlighters. Products such as The Orgasm Blush, which is a blushhighlighter hybrid, show that shimmer and glow can be added directly to the

cheeks, not only to areas of the face you wish to highlight. NARS reports that it sells two Orgasm blush products every minute across the globe. Sounds like a pretty good reason to get your hands on one ASAP!

WHAT ARE NARS’ BIGGEST SELLERS? Just a few of NARS’ most iconic products are the Climax Extreme Mascara (a voluminising mascara that adds length and volume to lashes without clumping up), Extra Effects Eyeshadow Palette (a 12-tone palette

NARS AND ETHICS NARS is not vegan-friendly as a result of Shiseido’s decision to expand to the Chinese market. However, the brand has formally stated that it is against animal testing and it is committed and actively working to advance alternative testing methods. “We are proud to support the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), a globally recognised organisation at the forefront of advancing non-animal methods in China and around the world,” says a spokesperson for the brand. i www.narscosmetics.es

THE CBD BOOM SO MUCH MORE THAN HYPE Cannabidiol (CBD) may seem like a novelty in health these days but it has actually been strong on the market for at least a decade. In 2020, it was valued at a whopping €2.5 billion and Grand View Research reports that its value is set to soar at an annual growth rate of above 20 per cent until 2028. Its many healing properties, alongside greater acceptance on the part of governments across the globe, has led to a big rise in demand for CBD and today, it is widely used for therapeutic reasons ranging from anxiety and depression to inflammation, pain relief, cancer symptom relief, and the list goes on. Those who are wary of the product, take note – it is non-addictive and devoid of psychoactive effects. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

HOW DOES CBD DIFFER FROM MARIJUANA, CANNABIS, AND HEMP? Although CBD is present in cannabis (marijuana) and it is a vital component of medical marijuana, it is actually derived from hemp – a variety of the Cannabis sativa (C. sativa) plant. CBD can be manufactured synthetically though it is mostly extracted from hemp plants in oil form and mixed with a carrier oil such as hemp seed

140 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

oil. As stated by the World Health Organisation, CBD has no potential to be abused. Moreover, it has no associated health problems.

IN WHAT FORM IS CBD CONSUMED? CBD can be purchased in a number of different formats – including oils, pills, capsules, and even crisps and gummy bears. When buying CBD, make sure to choose products that

are made with full or broadspectrum oils (which are less processed). Full-spectrum oils contain CBD and THC, while broad-spectrum oils have all the important cannabinoids without THC. Research shows that you may obtain the best results from combining CBD and THC (this is known as the ‘entourage effect’). THC does have psychoactive effects, however, so if these are undesired, simply stick to CBD to obtain a wide range of benefits.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CBD? These are almost too many to mention. Read on to discover just a few symptoms, conditions, and diseases that it can help with.

CBD FOR THE MIND A 2019 study showed that taking between 300 and 600mg of CBD significantly reduced anxiety in a group of 57 adult males. CBD is thought to weave its magic by reacting with specific receptors in the central and peripheral nervous systems, and researchers also believe it may alter serotonin signals. Multiple studies have shown that CBD reduces the symptoms of anxiety and it can help to reduce PTSD symptoms such as nightmares and repetitive negative memories. A 2016 study, meanwhile, showed that CBD can have antipsychotic benefits for people with schizophrenia, however, it produces none of the harsh side-effects of some antipsychotic medications.

a placebo. These effects lasted between 24 hours and one week, with people receiving higher doses of CBD enjoying longerlasting benefits. CBD reduced the stress response to drug cues, producing less anxiety, lower heart rates, and stress hormone (cortisol) levels. Researchers therefore see CBD as a potential low-risk way to manage addictions to pharmaceutical opioids.

CBD KNOCKS OUT PAIN

CBD has been found in numerous studies to alleviate pain. For instance, one 2020 study showed that topical CBD was efficient at relieving the intense pain and itching associated with a type of brain nerve and spinal cord nerve damage. CBD is also currently used to treat chronic back pain and headaches, cancer-related pain, and inflammation (which is closely related to painful conditions like arthritis). It seems to have various interactions and appears to modulate the CBD VS ADDICTION endocannabinoid, inflammatory, A clinical trial has shown that and pain-sensing systems. The people who received CBD endocannabinoid system has medication had fewer cravings for receptors that interact with opioids than those who received

the body’s own cannabinoids. It regulates various important functions, notes Health Harvard, including mood, anxiety, and pain perception.

SOOTHING SYMPTOMS OF ARTHRITIS Around 29 per cent of people with arthritis use CBD, mainly in liquid or topical form. One randomised trial on the effects of topical CBD on knee pain came to mixed conclusions, while another 2021 study by researchers showed that CBD relieves pain by both pharmacological action and psychological placebo effects. Moreover, there is a mass of anecdotal evidence showing that it can provide rater dramatic improvement. Researchers have additionally found that CBD has the ability to soothe inflammation and pain. CBD influences how our brain perceives stress, precisely because it interacts with our serotonin receptors. Because it has no side-effects, it is worth trying out if you have arthritis and pain or stiffness is standing in the way of your everyday life tasks.

CBD VS EPILEPSY, DIABETES, AND OTHER CONDITIONS CBD can help people with conditions like epilepsy and diabetes. In 2018, researchers found that it significantly reduced seizures in patients with severe epilepsy. Many studies have also shown promise with the treatment of diabetes. One 2006 study showed that it could help stop diabetic retinopathy (leaky blood vessels). Another body of research found that it could

help reduce nerve pain in areas like the feet and help diabetics sleep better. CBD can have a powerful effect on many bodily systems. A 2015 study found, for instance, that it could help heal bone fissures. Another 2019 lab study found that it could work similarly to a ‘Trojan horse’ to deliver medications across the blood-brain barrier into the brain. One particularly surprising (2020) study showed that it had antibacterial activity against drug-resistant

142 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

MRSA. It prevented bacteria from forming biofilms (communities of microorganisms that attach to each other and cover surfaces). Finally, because CBD reduces resting blood pressure, it may benefit heart health.

WHY SEEKING DOCTOR APPROVAL IS WISE If you wish to treat chronic pain or any other condition you may have via CBD, it pays to run the idea by your health professional first. One 2018 lab study (on mice) undertaken at Indiana

University found that over-the-counter CBD could have unknown side-effects, one of which was higher pressure inside the eye. This suggests that using CBD to treat glaucoma may actually make matters worse. CBS can also have interactions with specific medications used to treat blood pressure and high cholesterol. Finally, it can, in some cases, have side-effects such as tiredness, appetite or weight changes, and tummy upset. The science on CBD is relatively new, meaning that studies still need to be carried out on the longterm effects of taking it regularly. Scientists are also seeking to discover how different means of consumption (vaping, smoking, topical, etc.) affect one’s intake,

whether or not CBD has an effect on male reproductive toxicity (as has been found in some animal studies), how it interacts with herbs and other plant-based treatments, and its effects on developing foetuses or newborns.

ENSURING YOU CHOOSE TOP-QUALITY PRODUCTS Knowing where your CBD oil is sourced from is also vital. A 2017 study found that some 70 per cent of CBD extracts sold online are mislabelled, with some products under- or over-labelling CBD contain and some containing unlisted components such as THC. The International Research Centre on Cannabis and Health has issued a warning that consumers should

avoid buying CBD vaping products from unregulated markets. When buying products, avoid those that list only hemp seeds, hemp seed oil, or Cannabis sativa seed oil. These are not the same product as CBD. Bodies like the FDA are currently working on updating current regulatory frameworks to ensure that CBD products reach customers in a safe, effective way. As the scientific community increases its body of knowledge on CBD, these regulations will be adapted appropriately. In Spain, any products containing CBD oil cannot be sold if THC levels are above 0.2 per cent. Moreover, all seeds for hemp cultivation must be obtained from the Approved European Hemp Seed Catalogue. e

HOLLYWOOD HERO’S JOURNEY

Blockbuster films such as The Wizard of Oz, James Bond, Star Wars, The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings and Superman are all huge international successes for one reason: they follow an amazing concept known as the ‘hero’s journey’. Z CALL TO ADVENTURE It’s why something stirs inside when Superman tears off his average man’s suit to reveal what super strength was underneath all along. Or when Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz leaves the farm where she is put upon by everyone, the film actually transforms from monochrome into stunning Technicolor. She literally opens the door to a brighter life. It signifies she’s left her ordinary world for an extraordinary world. It’s a world that’s there for all of us if only we can answer the ‘call to

Z BECOME THE ONE A hero’s journey is divided into 12 stages and now a growing number of mental health experts are noting the phenomenal connection to the 12 Steps that are well known in beating addictions. But they are also being increasingly discovered as an exceptional method of living for anyone. A passage from my book 12 Steps To 1 Hero about this incredible paralle sums up what anyone can gain: “The 12 Steps enable a realisation that allows you to become the person you’re supposed to be, by going on a journey to find the hero inside. Consequently significantly emboldened, you can now stand tall, even during the worst periods

adventure’ as it’s called in the hero’s journey. A professor of literature called Joseph Campbell recognised the hero’s journey concept in 1949 with the publication of his book The Hero With A Thousand Faces. He studied stories throughout history, including from cultures that had no contact with each other, and realised that the story structure was basically the same. So our ancestors in such as the ancient legends, Greek myths, religious stories, classic bestsellers

of life: during a relationship or job rejection; as a loved one suffers with sickness; when the world recoils due to terrorism or a pandemic virus; even during the deaths of your mother and father.” “You are the one that is there for the others, you are the strong one, you are the brave and courageous, you are the calm in the storm and you are the one from where the light shines in the darkness. Isn’t that the aim, to be that one?” Consider the astounding transformations of the main characters in your favourite films and books and from the most popular stories throughout history – and know that their story is urging you to go on your very own hero’s journey. e

and more recently Hollywood blockbusters are all trying to tell us the same thing: we must take our very own personal hero’s journey to find our true self. Campbell’s hero’s journey saw that the main character always answered their ‘call to adventure’ and in doing so left their “ordinary world” for an “extraordinary world”. On their journey they encountered all nature of trials, tribulations and temptations that they had to overcome to gain what they set out for.

VINO MIO

CITY CENTRE CHARM IN MÁLAGA If you are visiting Málaga and would like to fit in a dining experience that will warm your heart, here is a place that will do just that. Located in a pretty plaza right in front of the Cervantes Theatre, Vino Mio is the result of its owner’s strive for perfection. Hélène Mostertman, who hails from Holland, settled in Málaga after many years of travelling and quite a number of plates on the menu are a testimony to this, being recreations of dishes she has enjoyed in different corners of the world. WORDS JAMES SINCLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY KEVIN HORN

L

aunched in 2003, Vino Mio is now recognised as one of Málaga’s great restaurants and, as you are about to find out, there are many reasons for this. Firstly, Hélène is a person who clearly enjoys life and her enthusiasm and good humour are contagious.

156 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

She is normally to be found front of house, greeting her diners and ensuring everything is running smoothly. She has also assembled a talented team, both those in the kitchen preparing the orders, and in the waiting staff who are super simpático.

The restaurant is open five days a week: on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7pm and on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm until later in the evening with the kitchen always operating. This means, as well as having a lovely lunch or memorable dinner, you can also stop by after an afternoon’s shopping or before catching a show at the theatre.

CULTURE AND CHARM There is a spacious terrace in front of the restaurant with a stunning view of the theatre’s facade, which also operates with heat lamps at this time of year. Inside, the interior is cosy with polished wooden floor boards, a variety of seating options, versatile lighting, nice art deco touches such as a large ornate mirror and hanging chandelier, and an extensive bar area. The

walls feature paintings from local and international artists with the exhibition changing each month. Every evening a flamenco show takes place with nice intervals between acts, providing an authentic burst of culture and creating a unique ambience in the venue.

THE MAIN DEAL When it comes to the food, it quickly becomes clear why Vino Mio is one of the most popular restaurants in the area, with many of the diners being regulars. The menu though quite compact displays a dazzling array of world cuisine, such as the › WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 157

Our other starter of Bolsitas Crujientes consisted of King prawns and vegetables in delicate filo pastry wraps served with a tomato and oregano jam – yummy! Fortunately, we still had space to finish with a endearing speciality of the house – Tarta Guiness, a cheesecake made with the famous black beer and cocoa. Hélène trained as a sommelier and has arranged an eclectic range of wines to pair with any of these diverse dishes. There is also a wine tasting event, by prior reservation, featuring three wines from their exclusive winery, with Iberian ham, Manchego Cheese, bread and olives.

DYNAMIC DUEÑA Hélène is known for her support of charitable causes and has for many years been involved in helping to raise funds for the AECC, Cudeca, the Piel de Mariposa Association and she is an Ambassador for the Ronald McDonald house in Málaga, which provides accommodation for the families of hospitalised children close to where they are being treated. Her latest initiative is Healing the World, a project that aims to raise the profiles and generate financial support for local NGOs.

A

t the age of 25, many youngsters are still at university or working in their first job but at this age, Mario Cachinero, the Toledo-born Chef of Skina, won the first MICHELIN Young Chef Prize to be awarded in Spain. He was one of only nine Chefs across the globe to receive this honour. Mario’s rise has been as vertiginous as it has been prodigious. Just four years previously, at the age of 21, he had arrived in Marbella to work at Skina, which then had one Michelin star. By the time he was 23, he had helped the restaurant achieve its second Michelin star – quite a feat for someone who in many ways is at the commencement of an undoubtedly stellar career. Mario honed his craft at the Escuela de Hosteleria de Toledo, where he studied to be a Chef and completed studies in Kitchen and Restaurant Services Management.

He has worked as a waiter, served drinks, and washed dishes, starting out at his family’s cafeteria before refining his skills at Casa Elena, El Carmen de Montesión in Toledo (one Michelin star), and Casa Marcial in Asturias (two Michelin stars). When I inquired how he met Marcos Granda (founder of Skina and owner of three other restaurants in Spain boasting a total of five Michelin stars), Mario answered, “I had just finished my stint at Casa Marcial when a colleague asked if I would be interested in starting at Skina. I was excited about the chance to learn new things. I never thought I would be the Chef. I assumed I would be the Sous-Chef,” he smiles. In his first year at the helm of Skina’s kitchen, he managed to achieve quite a feat alongside his hardworking teammates – that of retaining Skina’s Michelin star.

Two years down the track, he and Granda would achieve a major coup for their restaurant: Skina’s second star. “My family always says I don’t call them enough and I answer that it’s because I’m always working. Receiving the second star helped them understand the effort involved in my work. To receive such a prestigious reward so early in my career is wonderful.” I ask him how he initially adapted to the exacting level of excellence and work Skina is known for. “At first my dishes weren’t as aesthetically pleasing as I desired or they lacked small details. I listened well to the feedback I received from Marcos and my colleagues. Marcos is demanding and he would ask for more finesse. We managed to create a menu with lots of delicate touches and to emphasise specific details in each dish so as to highlight the ingredients. ›

The result, we believe, is a more enjoyable experience for our diners.” Mario credits his grandmother and mother for having instilled a love of great food in him. “I’m not at all active on social media. I prefer to work since no matter how beautiful food photography can be, nothing beats the magic of going to a restaurant and enjoying a really fine meal. My grandmother and mother prepared food with love and technique. They would add little touches (a pinch of pepper here, a little cream there) that really livened up a dish.” Destiny also played a hand in his future. “When you’re young, your mind isn’t 100 per cent decided on a career path. have many options. What I found was that none of these really hit the spot. When I tried my hand at cooking, I discovered that I enjoyed making people happy through food.” These days, Mario is a successful Chef with a good head on his shoulders. “Life has to be balanced. I work hard but believe in working to live, not vice-versa. I have a social life and a love life and enjoy going out. We’re adults, not children, and we have our responsibilities but so long as we fulfil them we also need to rest, enjoy, travel, and try new experiences.” As we finalise the interview, Mario tells me about Skina’s latest plans. “We are making the restaurant even smaller, serving

only eight to 10 diners at a time. This enables us to create more distance between tables and gives us more room to present products and prepare dishes at the table.” One such dish in the works is a risotto prepared alongside diners with a creamy Payoyo cheese (from the Sierra de Grazalema). Under Mario’s creative eye and steady hand, Skina is going from strength to strength, serving dishes that represent the very best of traditional Andalusian cuisine with touches of the avantegarde. g C/ Aduar 12, Marbella. PRIORATO

HOW TWO LUMINARIES FOUNDED A WINE REGION No lover of wine will expect a prize for nominating the most wellknown Spanish regions: La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Jerez, Rías Baíxas, Jumilla, etc. But how many can identify the other 62? It just so happens that the regions which sell the most wine also produce the most, so the system feeds on itself, but aren’t there lesser-known regions that deserve to be recognised more widely? WORDS ANDREW J LINN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CLOS MOGADOR

I

t is very seldom that, anywhere in the winemaking world, an entire wine production area has become established thanks mainly to the efforts of two people. But this is just one of the reasons that the area known as Priorato is so fascinating. Located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, about 60 km from Barcelona, the journey used to take more than three hours over rutted tracks, now fortunately improved by tarmac. It was originally the preserve of religious orders, in this case

168 / FEBRUARY 2022 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Carthusian monks in the 12th century. They were prepared to bear freezing winters and sizzling summers in the name of their faith. But these hardy monks always brought vines from wherever they came in order to make communion wine (not for the sustenance of the brothers, of course). Priorato means priory, so the thread is easy to follow. Nevertheless, a more inhospitable location for growing grapes would be hard to envisage. Terraces were manually hacked out of steep mountain sides, and what little

soil that existed was hidden under layers of rock. Even today the vineyards are worked almost as they were in the 19th century, using mules and not employing chemicals. There is possibly no other wine region anywhere like this one. Garnacha and Cariñena are the commonest grapes, with minimal amounts of white and rosado varieties. There are few wine regions with such a low grape production per hectare, in this case 2,000 kilos as opposed to the 10,000 kilos for many ‘industrial’ wineries.

In Priorato it is the human story that is more interesting than the wine data. The two movers and shakers who got the whole show on the road were good friends with a vibrant social life. René Barbier’s family had lost all its winemaking assets in Spain because of the Rumasa scandal of the late 1970s. His soul mate and best buddy was – and still is – Alvaro Palacios, born into one of the most respected families of La Rioja, Palacios Remondo. Palacios had studied wine in France at Chateau Pétrus,

and logically he could have continued in La Rioja where his future was guaranteed by the security of his family’s domaine. But instead he was drawn to remote and seductive Priorat, which had been one of Spain’s important pre-Phylloxera wine regions. Álvaro believed that the area could be tapped to yield wines of the stature of Pétrus and Grange. While René Barbier bought the finca L’Hort Piqué with the financial help of his father-inlaw, Alvaro acquired in 1990 Finca Dofi, now referred to

as L’Ermita. It took him five years to get it into shape and another 20 for the wine to become acknowledged as one of Spain’s greatest. Understandably at the time the locals thought he was mad, since none of them were doing more than scratching a living from viticulture, and the possibility that great wines could ever be made in the region was a sad joke. There was actually a proposal on the table at the time for all wines made locally to be funnelled through a co-operative and sold under a generic label.

Back then in 1989 there were only four bodegas in Priorato. Today there are more than a hundred, with wellknown names like Josep Lluís Pérez, Carles Pastrana, Torres, Castell de Perelada, Freixenet and Codorniu. Four million bottles of wine are now produced annually Another visionary who was an early recruit to the commune, as it was known then, was Daphne Glorian. Paris-born and of Swiss nationality, she had met the two ‘locos’ in the USA and been infected by their enthusiasm. She went to Spain and sold her car to purchase a small vineyard. The rest, as they say, is history. Her Clos Erasmus is the first Spanish wine to earn a Robert Parker score of 100 points – two years running. Glorian only makes 3,000 bottles annually. A bottle of the 2019 vintage costs 200 euros, and the
