Giorgio Armani’s most famous qualities as a designer are simplicity and quality. The Piacenza-born maestro believes that beautiful designs have to be free of artifice and centred around strengths one already possesses. As is the case with some of the most renowned Italian fashion houses, excellence in fashion is all about the cut, materials, and tiny details. It was the search for innate elegance that gave rise to Armani Beauty – but the Armani brand has a long, rich history that is definitely worth delving into.

FINDING HIS PASSION

Giorgio’s early years were a struggle for identity and self-discovery. He initially planned on becoming a doctor, completing three years of his degree before joining the army. Realising the soldier’s life was not for him and plagued by the typical confusion that can arise in youth, he bided his time by working at an elegant Milan department store, dressing windows and selling fashion in the menswear department. Soon after, he accepted a job at Nino Cerruti, where despite having no formal training, he took his first steps in fashion design while dabbling in freelance work for other brands.

THE BIRTH OF A DESIGN ICON

Giorgio’s friendship with Sergio Galeotti – an Italian architect who encouraged his buddy to launch his own brand – proved to be life-changing. Thanks to Galeotti’s insistence, Armani opened a design office in Milan in 1973. Calls flooded in and he was soon selling his creations to a host of renowned Italian companies. He also began showing off his work at runways, developing a personal sense of style and founding Giorgio Armani S.p.A. alongside Galeotti in 1975. This was the year he presented the first Giorgio Armani prêtà-porter line for men and women. It was also the year that Armani’s famous unlined, unconstructed men’s jacket appeared. Loose, informal, and sexy, the jacket provided a hint of the body within, marking a big departure from the ultra-serious (some would say stuffy) suits that were in vogue at the time. Months later, a similar jacket for women would appear. It had a masculine edge but was still soft and comfortable and was considered a true emancipator in the world of women’s fashion.

THE U.S. CALLS

In 1979, Armani introduced fashion lines for men and women in the U.S., adding various product lines along the way. In the 1980s, he joined forces with L’Oréal to create a line of perfumes and launched brands like Emporio Armani, Armani Jeans, Armani Junior, and Emporio Underwear. The Emporio Armani brand enjoyed a true explosion on TV and in street advertisements and magazines. Giorgio realised that designing clothing for the stars was an important way to build brand awareness, and he jumped at the chance to create an entire wardrobe for Richard Gere in American Gigolo. Since then, many more brands have arisen, including the popular A/X: Armani Exchange, which offers chic items at affordable prices.

Although Giorgio has enjoyed enviable success across the globe (including in China, which represents an important share of the fashion market), he has always had a special relationship with the U.S. For instance, he was the first fashion designer to appear on the cover of Time magazine since Christian Dior in the 1940s and to be honoured by the Guggenheim in New York with a dedicated exhibition.

BRANCHING INTO BEAUTY

Giorgio Armani Beauty (now part of L’Oréal’s luxury portfolio) was launched in 2000. It featured a select range of products that were meticulously overseen by the designer. Quality and cutting-edge technology were the values behind each article, and Giorgio was famed for sending items back to the lab repeatedly until they met his exacting standards. Arguably his most famous creation is the Luminous Skin Foundation, which is lightweight, natural, and long-lasting.
