Charm without the chaos

Surely the best place to judge the readiness of Cuba to embrace any stampede of tourism is inside the control room of the annual tourism trade show for the world’s travel press. So I present my press card as I am booked in with them on a trip across the island. It’s all charm and chaos in equal measure! The intermittent WiFi allows some of the world’s press to switch off but leaves others frustrating with their deadlines. All bustle with the heady mix of the compelling viewing of business representatives getting temperamental to no effect in front of fazed and ineffectual Cuban administrators.

Cuba, they are only too keen to tell me, broke her own records last year with several million visitors; the main tourist spots outside of Havana being Matanzas, Villa Clara, Trinidad, Jardines del Rey, and Holguín. People flock to the island typically for the sun and sand, and for the cigars, the salsa and the old colourful cars. But they may well be newcomers to the real consequences of socialism. ›

Some tourists may suffer the lack of both products on offer in the shops and of any modernity in technology. My hotel bookshop, for instance, stocked nothing but copies of Fidel Castro’s life and works, and other Communist bibles. But hopefully tourists will recognise that it’s about so much more than creature comforts. There’s the spirit of the country, the charm of the people and the music running through their bones! This lack of efficiency can only partly be

excused by the Caribbean sun and any attempts at manual work in the midday heat. It’s more that the entire sense of time has been frozen since 1959 when the revolution took hold of the island. While they are clearly highly articulate and intelligent, there’s simply no initiative on view or enterprise on offer. The State has stripped away any self-reliance, any desire to challenge. So Cuba is in one massive time lapse. A museum to Communism.

Cuba is nonetheless one of the world’s most sustainable countries, based on its own human welfare index (life expectancy, literacy and GDP) and an ecological footprint (the amount of land needed to fulfil a person’s food and energy needs). Luckily it’s also a blissful and providential land so food is plentiful for all. I had pineapple nearly every meal (or else guava, papaya and mango) and the waters are full of the very fish Hemingway was so keen to catch.

In time I reached Havana. Almost cinematic. Certainly scenic. Beautiful old cars acting as taxis, from the 1950s, hoot and crank around the city, customised and often with the doors and side-mirrors held together practically with sellotape. The city has a strong resemblance to Naples with her laundry lines and systematic chaos, bustle and deprivation. All steamy. All frenzy. Very Tennessee Williams. Better at night and sundown for me than by daylight. For it’s then that semi-clad figures emerge from the balconies (that drip with rusty electric wiring) to express themselves, brandishing food, cigars and drink. The fading, peeling Art Nouveau buildings, with their intricate iron grills match the roads in their state of disrepair with deep potholes which means, as the taxi driver jokes, "You sometimes get a massage for free in this car!"

All this is preferable to the freshly

repainted touristic area currently backed by an UNESCO initiative, where the streets are very carefully manicured and the sweeping water-fronted Malecón, the famous promenade, looks exceptionally clean. There is an industrious air about the locals. Calle Obispo runs from Parque Central to the Malecón and is a good indicator of how the old town is doing. The stink has apparently gone so maybe there have been renovations to the sewer system too. ›

As I make my way along Calle Obispo I'm startled by the subtle changes. I pop in to the famous Bodeguita del Medio, where Hemingway enjoyed his mojitos. Many authors and musicians have passed through these doors including the great Gabriel García Márquez. At Cristóbal Cathedral, old ladies still wear white turbans and long lace dresses as they sell knitted dolls. I stop off in Nao, one of the new breed of self-owned ‘paladares’. These are restaurants set in local homes. Although there are only six tables set, it’s cosy and the menu offers a wide range of delicacies including the likes of octopus and rabbit. Then there’s the newly opened Casa Miglis serving an interesting fusion of

Cuban and Swedish cuisine, with dishes such as shrimp skagen (on toast) and saffron seafood casserole. While El Figaro offers stroganoff, ceviche and gazpacho as well as tuna tartare, baby-eel salad or suckling pig. All housed in an 18th-century colonial building, a bastion of Cuba’s former sophistication.

The top spot for luxury, and nowhere being more characterful, is the Hotel Nacional. This imposing 1930s structure is truly redolent of Cuba’s glamorous past. I love it! So wonderfully evocative of yesteryear glamour with a wall of fame in its own museum, boasting Frank Sinatra,

Walt Disney and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The stylish music hall and cigarreeking casino (there’s no ban on smoking indoors!) are highly nostalgic and the swimming pool is so retro and in need of repair that it has a cachet of its own. Most memorable are the specific room numbers of the historic guest list. All on the same floor are 218 for Nat King Cole, 214 for Sinatra, 228 for Fred Astaire and 235 for Errol Flynn. The prize restaurant is the ‘Comedor de Aguiar’ with penguinbesuited waiters and sparkling chandeliers. The Cordero lamb dish and the Santa Digna wine are excellent. I recommend a daiquiri in the Churchill Bar. ›

Here it was, in a salon-styled waiting room, that I picked up a dictionary of Cuban Spanish only to rejoice in its similes and slang.‘Gordo como una buoya’ means fat as a buoy, while ‘orracho como una uva’ is drunk as a grape, and ‘flaco como un güin’ means as thin as a sugarcane flower. Similarly

graphic and pertinent in their descriptions are ‘ponchar’ to fail an exam (literally, to get a flat tyre) and ‘paton’ duck feet (said of someone who can’t dance). There are lots of great museums. One of the revolution, one for chocolate, another for rum. The Wilfredo Lam Center is perhaps my

favourite with his stunning oil paintings. There are echoes of the sultry sounds of salsa and now there’s a funky new era of urban soul.

I leave Havana the next morning to get a feel of the countryside. I pass small shacks, tumbledown houses with a slap of paint here and there and goats and hens roaming the gardens. The fields vary in size and undulate in most cases as the tractors are saved for the larger centrallyowned farms. It’s common to find tall palm trees standing in the middle of a field.

It is a four-hour bus ride to Cayo Coco among the archipelago of wetlands that make up the Jardines Del Rey.

These mangroves are joined to the mainland by a lengthy causeway. There’s a divinely white sandy beach running along the back of my hotel. Every little comfort is included in the hotel package as Pedro and his donkey patrol the beach handing out beers and soft drinks to the hard-pressed sunbathers. Next day I take a trip on a catamaran and wild dolphins swim past as we set sail. The catamaran anchors close to a coral reef and it’s time for snorkelling. This is the Caribbean at its best.

It would be only too easy to have spent a week here but I wanted to see more of the island. The one regret was actually in not finding time to

visit Trinidad, a colonial jewel of a town. Anyway, I was en route to Santiago de Cuba and it’s important to remember that Cuba is an extremely long island. On my way I passed through Camaguey, a clean and beautifully preserved city and so different from Havana with more bicycles than old Cadillacs. The winding labyrinth of streets, hide a cornucopia of talented artists exhibiting their work and an abundance of clay pots for which the city is famous. That night I stayed at Santa Lucia and checked in at the lively Brisas resort to embrace the beach once more, savouring the shallow waters at bath temperature. ›

The journey through the spine of Cuba was fascinating as the locals piled in and out of their ‘cooperative’ cars. Every horse and cart was packed to capacity but all the passengers shared in their good humour. My next stop was Holguín where the local beers Cristal and

Bucanero are brewed. The scenery changed the further south I travelled and bumps rose out of the landscape.

The final part of my journey shows up a contrasting mountainous backdrop, before I finally reach Santiago. This, Cuba’s second city, just

celebrated its 500th year since the Spanish founded it. The Tropicana cabaret is a wonderful excursion and the dancers come out into the crowd and perform the conga at the end of the show. The Casa de la Musica has a venue here and it’s from here that many of the original Buena Vista Social Club, that got the whole world swaying to Cuban music, hailed. It’s a beautiful city that stands alone and is the original site where Castro declared the socialist state on January 1st 1959. ›

More to the point or the national psyche are ‘resolver’ (to resolve or to work out) and ‘conseguir’ to get or to manage. And I have to say that I found grasping these concepts a truly enigmatic process. The world’s press had gathered for a weeklong invitation to the touristic delights of Cuba. Unfortunately our police car convoy, designed both to ease our way and to keep track on us all, broke down and caused untold delay. I tried to take a snap but was told it was illegal to take photographs of the police.

Something to do with the Cold War I had to imagine (as no reason was offered). And then the internal flight from Santiago of nearly a thousand kilometres back to Havana was itself delayed for half a day with the representative standing on a chair reading out the names of the lucky few who could take the next flight. And yet, all along, there were the welcoming drinks, the guitar ensembles, the iced sculptures. Prepare to be harried but never hurried! Charm and chaos in equal measure! e

Let’s start with the many amazing museums in the capital, of which there are a whopping 36! Many are located within walking distance of each other, so you can definitely see two or three in a day. Read on to discover our list of favourites.

THE CARMEN THYSSEN MUSEUM IN MÁLAGA – A TREASURE TROVE OF 19THCENTURY ART

Take a colourful journey through the main genres that held sway in Spanish painting during the 19th and the start of the 20th century. The Carmen Thyssen Museum, which is housed in a 16th-century Renaissance building in the city centre, houses an assembly of over 250 works from the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza

collection. Featured artists include Francisco de Zurbarán, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, and Julio Romero de Torres.

The first floor is dominated by the ‘preciosismo’ movement, led by Mariano Fortuny. This style sought to explain the fine details in a scene and featured both everyday subjects (such as Andalusian patios) and high society dances. On the second floor are 20th-century works by artists who looked to international movements such as impressionism for inspiration.

THE CENTRE POMPIDOU

The lively Muelle Uno (Port One) in the city, with its myriad of shops and restaurants and

scenic walkways, is dominated by a large, vibrant, Rubik’s Cube-like structure – Málaga’s own Pompidou Museum. Its unique mission is to appeal to people who don’t usually visit museums. If you are a newcomer to modern art, book a guided tour for beginners. If you’re a bit of an expert, ask for the guided tours for connoisseurs.

Within the walls of the Pompidou, you will find 7,000m2 of exhibition space, divided into two floors. Featured artists as we go to print include Matisse, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, and Lucio Fontana. Modern art reigns supreme at the Centre Pompidou in Málaga

TOP EXHIBITION TO CATCH: JAVIER CALLEJA

Javier Calleja is one of the international art scene’s most exciting and popular artists. Hailing from Málaga, he is causing a frenzy in the US, Japan, China, Russia, Africa, and Latin America. His work comprises drawings, paintings, and large-scale sculptures –many of which feature childlike subjects that transmit innocence and the joy of discovery. The Centro Cultural Fundación Unicaja is currently housing the artist’s biggest individual exhibition to date, with over 200 works to enjoy. Entitled Mr. Günter the Cat Show, it can be viewed until September 6.

THE PICASSO MUSEUM OF MÁLAGA

Like the Carmen Thyssen Museum, the Picasso Museum of Málaga is located in a stunning 16th-century palace, though this venue boasts a marriage of Renaissance and Mudéjar architectural elements. Although the museum opened its doors in 2003 (its launch was attended by the King and Queen Emeritus, Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía), it was originally dreamed up by Pablo Picasso and Juan Temboury Álvarez, who was the Delegate of Fine Arts in Málaga.

The museum features a wide range of paintings and drawings by Picasso, who founded the Cubist movement alongside Georges Braque, as well as numerous temporary exhibitions. Must-see paintings include Still Life with Minotaur and Palette, Head of a Woman (Dora Maar), and Jacqueline Seated. There is also a wide range of sculptures and sketches on display.

THE AUTOMOBILE AND FASHION MUSEUM

What do fancy cars and high fashion have in common? The fact that both drip artistry and are the product of talent, vision, and a penchant for perfection. The Automobile and Fashion Museum shows how seamlessly these creative genres merge via a host of set-ups that marry the two to perfection.

The cars are divided into 10 different categories – Belle Époque, The Golden 1920s, Art Deco, Popular Cars, Designer Cars, Dream Cars, Alternative Energy, the English Tradition, Dolce Vita, and Hot Rods.

Fashion, meanwhile, is represented by firms of the calibre of Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Balmain, and Prada. You will find six different categories to investigate – Individual Collections, Apotheosis, Fashion Victim, Black Room, Hats, and Fashion in Movement. The range of ideas represented in the museum include consumerism, artistry in design, and iconic outfits – including a Belle Époque dress once belonging to Napoleon III’s wife, the Empress Eugénie de Montijo.

TARÓ

This restaurant is named after a thick, persistent cloud which covers the city of Málaga in the hottest days of the summer without warning, protecting native plants against the heat by producing a notable and pleasurable drop in temperature.

Taró is the kind of venue that is ideal for celebrating special events such as important business dinners or anniversaries. Avant-garde cuisine is created meticulously by whiz chef, Pachu Barrera. He transforms traditional recipes into works of art with unique flavours and textures. LA ANTXOETA ART RESTAURANT

KALEJA

Head Chef, Dani Carnero obtained Málaga city’s second Michelin star (for his restaurant, Kaleja) in November 2022, after many years consolidating a stellar career that has seen him achieve nationwide renown. ‘Kaleja’ is a Sephardic word meaning ‘narrow street or alley’. It is a fitting name for a restaurant that is located in a tiny

street in Málaga’s ‘judería’ (old Jewish quarter), with views over the Moorish Alcazaba.

The chef prepares his dishes in a traditional cocina de candela, which imbues ingredients with a smoky aroma that rescues the flavours he first encountered as a child. At Kaleja, you will find numerous Andalusian recipes that Carnero has rescued from

oblivion. There are two tasting menus on offer – Memoria and Gran Memoria – made with market-fresh produce and plenty of love. Carnero owns two other trendy spots in the city – La Cosmopolita and La Cosmo, both of which offer casual dining experiences.

Vino Mío restaurant, located in front of the Teatro Cervantes, has achieved an amazing feat this year – its 20th anniversary! This establishment is known for having one of Málaga’s best terraces. The latter is open all year, climatised, and covered so that diners can enjoy a great meal even on rainy days.

The restaurant presents highly acclaimed flamenco shows, which are celebrated from Thursday to Sunday, as well as art exhibitions and a plethora of musical evenings. On the menu are a host of international dishes and tapas, as well as vegetarian dishes and tempting desserts. THE PARQUE DE LA ALAMEDA

This is one of my favourite alltime spots, as it was a frequent hangout during my first years living in the heart of Málaga. This park is an oasis of subtropical trees, shrubs, and plants with a host of benches where you can read a book, enjoy a quick lunch, or just watch the world go by. Designed in 1876 as a means of expanding the port, it measures 30,000m2 and is considered the green lung of Málaga.

Master, myth, misogynist – Pablo Picasso’s life, work and attitude to women will all come under the spotlight as 50 exhibitions across two continents mark the 50th anniversary year of his death.

It’s 50 years this month since Pablo Picasso died in his bed on the French Riviera, aged 91, after one of his famous Saturday night dinner parties. He left 45,000 artworks, no will, and grounds for a court battle that took his feuding family six years to resolve. Happily, half a century on, the heirs have come together in an artistic entente cordiale with the governments of France and Spain and 38 heavyhitting museums to present Celebración Picasso 19732023: 50 exhibitions opening across Europe and America over the next 12 months in the most ambitious art collaboration yet.

More of Picasso’s prodigious legacy will be out on loan for public view than has ever seen gallery walls before. Artworks insured for fortunes will be flying between New York’s Solomon Guggenheim, the Musée Picasso in Paris, The Prado in Madrid – one of 16 museums staging

exhibitions in Spain – and eminent institutions in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Monaco and Romania.

It will be the most highprofile retrospective ever bestowed on an artist, let alone one on the ‘cancel culture’ hit list – and precisely for that reason.

Picasso paired with Goya, El Greco, Velázquez and Chanel; Picasso and Cubism; Picasso and Feminism –the artist will be scrutinised through 50 different lenses, with seminars on top, in an extravagant bid to validate his legacy in a post-#Me Too world.

“If there is an artist who defines the 20th century, who represents it with all its

cruelty, violence, passion, excesses and contradictions, this is, undoubtedly, Pablo Picasso,” said Spain’s Culture Minister Miquel Iceta at the Madrid launch, held in front of the Reina Sofía Museum’s prized Guernica mural. “Celebración Picasso will allow us to confront him from a contemporary perspective, helping us to understand with today’s eyes an artist who is still alive 50 years after his death.”

Málaga’s most famous son is still influencing art worldwide and fetching record nine-figure sums for his own. But can his legacy survive the glare of a very public year ahead? Was he ‘a Harvey Weinstein of his time’, as Danish artist Olafur Eliasson described him? And should it prevent us from appreciating his art? This year, it will all be up for debate. ›

One show unlikely to be too celebratory, Picasso and Feminism, opens at New York’s Brooklyn Museum this summer. It has been co-curated by Aussie comedian and self-confessed Picasso hater Hannah Gadsby who called him out in her stage show, Nanette, for ‘suffering the mental illness of misogyny’.

“Picasso’s behaviour is often framed as evidence of his magnetism and unbridled passion, despite the fact that, in France in 1927, corruption of a minor was a crime punishable by imprisonment,” she said, referencing his affair with an under-age muse. “Our mistake was to invalidate the perspective of a

17-year-old girl because we believed her potential was never going to equal his.”

British fashion guru Sir Paul Smith has curated the artist’s works as you’ve never seen them before in a whimsical re-hanging of the Collection at the Musée National Picasso Paris. PICASSO MANIA IN MÁLAGA

Prepare for a Picasso explosion this summer with Cubist-inspired tapas, Blue and Rose cocktails and chocolate minotaur stencils floating on frothy capuccinos! A birthday party atmosphere will prevail in the artist’s native city to mark another important anniversary: the opening of the Museo Picasso Málaga by the King and Queen of Spain, 20 years ago, which transformed a city famous only for its airport into a world capital of culture.

“Pablo could never have imagined that 50 years after his death he would have become the Málaga brand,” said MPM’s Artistic Director, José Lebrero. “We want to celebrate the major contribution the Museum has made to the cultural transformation of the city. A virtual attraction offering ‘an immersive walk through the artist’s world’, a mega edition of the Picasso Bullfight during August feria week, and a free audio tour around the artist’s childhood haunts are events announced so far. ›

Thanks to the Picasso Effect, Málaga has become a point of pilgrimage for visitors who come to to see his Twilight in the Port of Málaga for real (totally changed, except for the sunsets); to gawp at the baptismal font where Pablito received a litany of official names (25, all told); and to take selfies in La Malagueta bull ring, the subject of eight-yearold Picasso’s first painting and the inspiration for his tortured tauromaquia images of later life.

None of his early work looks like ‘a Picasso’, as we’ve come to know him. The boy received a strictly classical training from his art professor father who believed in disciplined copying of the masters, and drawing from life. It was a lesson his son never forgot. “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist,” Picasso said. ›

PABLO’S PIGEONS

Picasso’s iconic Dove of Peace harks back to the pigeons pecking the dirt in Plaza Merced opposite the family home in 1880s Málaga (now the Casa Natal Museum). They were one of the first subjects the little boy learned to draw, first with a stick in the dirt, later under his art professor father’s tutelage, who bred pigeons for life-drawing classes.

Picasso drew on those childhood lessons when he was invited to design a poster for the 1949 World Peace Council, an image of a dove he later refined into the simple line drawing adopted by the 1960s Peace Movement.

Picasso kept a dovecot in his garden and named his fourth daughter Paloma, who keeps the motif alive in her jewellery designs for Tiffany and Co.

ARTIST AND MODEL

Picasso once remarked that his stylistic periods could be categorised by the women in his life: his muses. Whoever was in his bed influenced his art and he swapped partners as often as he changed styles. In between, he used prostitutes.

Picasso depicted many of his models as objects of sexual abuse from predatory Minotaur figures thinly disguised as himself. Connections have long been drawn between his art and treatment of women in real life but Marina Picasso painted the darkest picture of the artist/muse relationship in Picasso, My Grandfather (2001).

‘He submitted them to his animal sexuality, tamed them, bewitched them, ingested them, and crushed them onto his canvas’, she wrote. ‘After he had spent many nights extracting their essence, once they were bled dry, he would dispose of them.’

Of his seven most famous modellovers – and there were many more – two committed suicide, two had nervous breakdowns and one became a nun. Two were his wives, three were the mothers of his four children. Mostly they were articulate artistic women who put Picasso’s career before their own. All but one professed him to be the love of their lives. ›

THE SEVEN MUSES

These were the women who most a-mused Picasso, dated according to the time they lasted in the role.

» Fernande Olivier (1904-1912) shook Picasso out of his melancholic Blue Period into his happier Rose Period and on to Cubism, posing for over 60 paintings. In her memoirs – which Picasso paid her not to publish until after his death – she wrote that he’d kept her locked up in his apartment ‘due to a sort of morbid jealousy’. She never fulfilled her own artistic potential and died penniless but she’s got her own back, becoming the first Picasso muse to be given a retrospective. Fernande Olivier and Pablo Picasso in the Intimacy of the Bateau-Lavoir, a fly-on-the-wall exhibition of her paintings, portraits and journals, opened Celebración Picasso in Paris.

» Eva Gouel (1912-1915), Fernande’s best friend, the subject of Picasso’s famous Woman with a Guitar, was his next conquest. His interests strayed after she developed TB, from which she died.

» Olga Khokhlova (1918-1934)

A dancer with the Ballets Russes and Picasso’s first wife, he left ‘the castrator’ as

he called her, soon after she produced an heir. She refused to divorce him and stalked him until her death.

» Marie-Thérèse Walter (19271935) hung herself from grief after Picasso left her. A 17-year-old minor when the 45-year-old artist seduced her, she was the muse or his most explicitly erotic paintings. After daughter Maya was born, she found herself sharing him with Surrealist photographer Dora Maar and gave him an ultimatum: choose. Picasso invited the women to wrestle it out physically, recalling it ‘one of my choicest memories’. He painted the scene in Birds in a Cage (1937), depicting black dove Dora fighting white dove Marie-Thérèse.

» Dora Maar (1935-43) won the contest and remained in favour long enough to photograph the entire production process for

Guernica. Her intellect challenged the artist but when The Master moved on, she converted to Catholicism, stating: “After Picasso, only God”.

» Françoise Gilot (1943-52) mother to Claude and Paloma Picasso and the only woman to dump him. She became a successful artist and is living happily ever after, aged 96, on the royalties from her kiss-and-tell. In Life with Picasso, she wrote of Picasso’s ‘lust for seduction as a form of exercising power over women, unshakable narcissism and the drive to do evil by damaging the lives of the women who became his partners’.

» Jacqueline Roque (1953-1973) Picasso based more works on his devotional second wife than any other muse –more than 400 pieces. She never got over Picasso’s death and shot herself in 1986, aged 59. e

EXPLORE NATURE ANDALUCÍA’S NATIONAL PARKS

Those of us who live in or visit the Costa del Sol tend to fix our focus on its sea, beaches and leisure facilities such as golf courses. Every now and again those majestic peaks that rise up behind the coastal towns draw our attention, and rightly so, for they harbour a spectacular world waiting to be discovered.

The mountain range and lakes seen from the air

SIERRA DE LA NIEVES

Officially designated a national park in 1991, the Sierra de las Nieves was also declared a UNESCO heritage site in 1995 and in 2006 became part of the Intercontinental Mediterranean Biosphere. It is a little-known jewel in the crown of Marbella, as it offers a Rocky Mountain style nature reserve right on our doorstep, with almost 23,000 hectares (230km2) of open mountain ranges, valleys, forests, waterfalls and cascading streams, not to mention a wealth of fauna and flora. Roughly translated as ‘snowy mountain range’, it is named for the extensive white blanket that descends upon the mountains in winter. ›

The nature reserve is unique for its Pinsapo trees – or Spanish Fir – a relic of the Tertiary period that is endemic to this region and extends over 2,000 hectares within the park, forming the upper part of the larger Serranía de Ronda system of mountain ranges. Its tallest peak, Torrecilla, rises to 1,919 metres above the sea surface at Marbella’s beachfront, the landmark of a verdant biosphere that

extends east of Ronda and passes Benahavís, Ojén and Guaro along the way. Once upon a time, workers used to quarry the ice collected in these mountains and distribute it among the local villages –another origin of the range’s name.

Thanks to its height and topography, the Sierra de las Nieves becomes a snowy landscape in winter, when many of the animals and indeed

plants hibernate, leaving it to rabbits, mountain goats and roe deer to roam about in their winter fur. In other seasons, they are joined by martens, genets and otters, while high above eagles and vultures can be seen riding the thermals that rise up from the land. Falcons and owls headline a wide array of other birds and insect life, as well as lizards, salamanders and snakes, including also rare river crabs. It is a protected natural expanse rich in animal and plant life that is also home to some of the most important tracts of forest in the region.

For all the above reasons, the Sierra de las Nieves is popular with hikers and mountaineers. There are trails that are accessible from Benahavís, the Ronda road, Istán, the Refugio de Juanar, Guaro, Ojén, La Mairena and many other locations in the region. Besides exercising in the fresh air they offer spectacular scenery, the chance to spot wildlife, and of course incredible views across the mountain ranges, valleys and from some perspectives back down to the sea. The Sierra de las Nieves may no longer house bears, wolves and lynx, but it remains a formidable natural reserve right on the doorstep of Marbella.

SIERRA NEVADA

For anyone on the Costa del Sol, and Spain for that matter, the name Sierra Nevada conjures up images of skiing and other alpine sports as practised at the winter resort of Pradollano just two hours from the coast. However, this extensive mountain range stretches from Granada in the north to the coastal region in the south and near Almería in the east, with peaks that include the tallest in continental Spain – Mulhacén at 3,479 metres. At the heart of this high-altitude biosphere is the Sierra Nevada National Park, which lays within the provinces of Granada and Almería and covers an area of almost 86,000 hectares (860 km2).

Declared a national park in 1999, it is the secondlargest nature reserve in Spain and the largest that consists of land only. Within the park are many little villages that belong to the Alpujarra cultural region, which retained much of the earlier Moorish traditions and architecture. Besides 20 peaks over 3,000 metres height, this vast complex of mountains is also home to almost 50 high-altitude alpine lakes, which in turn feed a great number of streams and rivers that flow down into the hinterland and the coastal region.

In terms of fauna and flora, the Sierra Nevada occupies a rather unique blend thanks to its southerly

location.This includes dozens of plant species that are endemic to the mountain range, as well as wild boar, martens, badgers, wildcats and Spanish ibex. Eagles, kestrels and owls rule the air, along with a plethora of smaller birds, insects and reptiles, including a limited variety of snakes and rather more numerous salamanders and lizards. Apart from the intrusion of winter sports enthusiasts and the associated ski runs, the Sierra Nevada is a rather untouched haven for nature, and an important gathering point for migrating birds, as a result of which there are birdwatching facilities at various points, as well as cabins that facilitate an overnight stay. ›

For lovers of nature, the Botanical Garden of Cortijuela is of interest, as it is here that the indigenous species of the mountain range are displayed and studied, while the reserve is also the setting of the Sierra Nevada Observatory and the IRAM radio telescope thanks to the very low levels of light pollution and the spectacular clarity of the night skies here. In fact, some people visit the national park not just for its natural beauty but also to gaze in awe at the kind of star-studded skies that put science fiction movies to shame.

DOÑANA NATIONAL PARK

You will have to travel a little to reach the Doñana National Park, but it is well worth it. Situated near the coast on the far side of Cádiz, this reserve within Huelva Province consists of wooded groves set within a maze of sand dunes and wetlands. Created a national park in 1989 and expanded in 1997 and again in 2005, it measures almost 122,500 hectares (1,225 km2), of which 54,250 hectares is designated national park and 68,250 hectares natural park. Farming villages surround the park, but at its heart is a wildland area where animals and birds –especially wetland species – thrive. During the mating season in spring, up to 200,000 birds congregate here, making it one of the main birdwatching spots in Europe. In all, there are over 300 species of birds, including a large number which gather for the seasonal move to Africa, and for

avian enthusiasts the park provides suitably low-key observation posts as well as an information centre. Not surprisingly, Doñana received UNESCO heritage status in 1994, and now draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Many will spot deer, wild boar and if they are lucky also the Iberian Lynx, for whom the reserve has become one of the main sanctuary habitats where this once severely endangered species has been able to recover. What was long a hunting domain has now become a domain of preservation.

Doñana also has a

fascinating human history, as local legend holds that a statuette of the Madonna once hurriedly hidden by local Christians at the time of the Muslim invasion in the eighth century was rediscovered by shepherds centuries later. Taken to what has since become the Hermitage of El Rocío in Almonte, it forms the basis of an annual pilgrimage that is uniquely Andalusian in culture and ranks as one of the most iconic and important events of its kind in Spain. Each year, the rocío draws up to one million visitors to a tiny village still devoid of tarred roads. As a result, the village of Almonte

feels somewhat like the setting of a Western.

This religious shrine on the edge of the waters of the Doñana National Park casts a spell, as you can see wild horses grazing against the liquid reflection of the marshes – a spectacle that merely adds to the special atmosphere of the place. Visited by Pope John Paul II in 1993, El Rocío is an icon of Andalusian music, food and culture as well as its religious traditions, while the expansive nature reserve on its flanks forms one of the most important sanctuaries for plant and wildlife not just in Spain, but all of Europe. e

His inspiration hails from the resort’s heritage and the culture and craftsmanship of Andalucía. SPRING AWAKENINGS

Spring 2023 is the projected reopening time for El Fuerte Marbella, a hotel with an over-60-year history and the historical privilege of being the first such establishment to open in the city centre.

MARBELLA’S GOLDEN AGE

Historians will know that in 1957, Don José Luque (who owned a chocolate factory and an oil mill) took the plunge into the tourism sector, opening a hotel by the sea in what was once a small fishing town. The hotel received its name El

Fuerte (The Fort) from the 16th-century fortress that stood proudly before it. The latter was built by King Charles V to stave off pirate attacks and served as an ammunition storage point for many years.

Since its origins as a fourstar hotel, El Fuerte Marbella has attracted the crème de la crème of the celebrity sector, with creative icon, Walt Disney enjoying a working holiday at the resort and quickly transforming it into ‘the place to be’ for the

rest of the jetset.

Disney lived at El Fuerte for various weeks alongside his beloved dog, Pluto. During his visit, which was undertaken to find locations for upcoming films, the talented cartoonist and producer forged a friendship with Pedro Guerrero (the hotel’s bell boy). The latter would walk Pluto twice a day in exchange for succulent tips. When Disney left the hotel for his villa on the Coast, their friendship was consolidated via daily visits, long chats, and afternoon tea at Disney’s home. ›

Since then, many other stars have sought refuge from the hustle and bustle of their busy lives at the resort – including Penélope Cruz, Lola Flores, Diana Dors, and the poet, Rafael Alberti. The 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s all formed part of Marbella’s “Golden Age,” but initiatives such as the Fuerte Marbella’s investment-heavy reformation are doing their share to bring back high-end glamour and elegance to the Coast.

José Luque García, General Director of Fuerte Group Hotels, explains that “the complete remodelling of

the hotel, and its upgrade to a five-star hotel, will attract clients with a higher purchasing power. This will benefit both the city centre and the Old Town, and will give rise to many new jobs, within the hotel and beyond.”

The hotel’s fascinating history has served as a starting point for Beriestain’s studio, which has chosen to highlight Andalusian traditions, without resorting to stereotypes. Prominence has been given to the colours and materials of Southern Spain, to transform the Fuerte Marbella into an oasis of relaxation and luxury.

RELAX. EAT. REPEAT

In addition to sporting a brand-new look, the resort will boast 251 rooms, 80 of which will be suites. There will also be a spa area (featuring treatments by Clarins) and gastronomic offerings that reflect Marbella’s seabased traditions. The list of restaurants is still to be announced, but it is rumoured that the Fuerte Group is looking into providing Michelin-star-level experiences to please the palates of the savviest of guests. ›

SUSTAINABLE LUXURY

Warm, harmonious, open spaces characterise the new hotel, which will feature many attributes found in Andalusian palaces, haciendas, and farm houses. Natural hues such as terracotta and earth abound and sustainable, durable materials proliferate. Local artisans and marble experts have worked hard to create beautiful bespoke materials that lend the interiors a luxurious, artistic feel. Beriestain explains, “When I embark on a project of this type, I immediately connect with local artisans. I don’t follow trends. Instead, I immerse myself in the history and tradition that surrounds a project. My

The renovation works are now in their final stages, and the relaunch will pay testimony to Walt Disney’s words: “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

More than a few eyebrows were raised when Lotus announced it would build an SUV. Was this what visionary founder Colin Chapman had in mind when he contemplated the future of the iconic British sports car builder? We like to think that he may well have looked at the Range Rover, over a decade old by the time he died, and imagined some kind of Lotus variant.

Now Lotus has announced with considerable fanfare that its Eletre is headed for production quite soon. Expectedly, the Eletre uses all-electric power and offers an intriguing Lotus take on what a sports-oriented luxury SUV should be. Of course, Lotus is simply following in the tire tracks of many other luxury sports car builders.

When Porsche, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Audi and BMW enter the utility field, it’s time to take notice. And it’s worth considering that several of those exalted makers have been saved from obscurity by SUV products.

Lotus is heralding its new product as ‘The world’s first electric hyperSUV’ but only time will tell if a new class has been created. It certainly has some Lotus DNA and doesn’t look much like

the kind of luxury sportsfocused SUV we’ve been used to. It’s very sleek with a low-profile roofline and a ground-hugging stance. Some key attributes of SUVs have likely been sacrificed but people who buy vehicles

like this are unlikely to be troubled by that. Like many rivals, the Eletre’s stamping ground is more likely to be upscale city locales than rugged mountain trails. Surprisingly, the Eletre will be built in China. ›

There will be three versions of the Eletre, deliveries of which are scheduled to begin some time later this year. Buyers will be able to choose either an Eletre, an Eletre S or a line-topping Eletre R. The Eletre and the Eletre S use two electric motors with a combined output of 603-horsepower. The twin-motor R model boasts a massive 906-horsepower, an output that not long ago you could only approach by buying a Bugatti with a 16-cylinder, quad turbo petrol engine. Clearly,

electric motors are starting to show their amazing performance potential.

According to Lotus, it has “taken the heart and soul” of the Emira sports car and the impressive aerodynamic performance of the Evija EV hypercar to create the Eletre. If these qualities are effectively transferred to the Eletre, it promises to be a truly remarkable vehicle. Commendably, Lotus has managed to keep prices within bounds and certainly production in China will have

helped there. This is very much a global product with input from the UK, Germany and China. As Lotus points out: “Born British, raised globally.”

From a practical standpoint, the Eletre has great promise. A rapidcharging time to 80 per cent charge of

just 20-minutes is targeted along with a range of 600-km for the two base models and 490 for the R variant. Lotus has been testing the Eletre extensively at the famed Nürburgring track in Germany and reports that performance targets are being met. ›

The cabin of the Eletre was designed to be bright and spacious and Lotus used a wide range of high quality materials to create a luxury ambiance. Customers can opt for either four individual seats or the usual five you get in a midsized SUV/crossover. The instrument array was inspired by Lotus sports cars and a lot of time was spent looking for ways to save weight, very much a tradition for the company. Electric vehicles are especially difficult products for lightness-seeking designers to work with, mainly because of battery pack weight. There are fullsize SUVs and pickups out there with battery packs that weigh as much as small petrol-powered

commuter hatchbacks. The Eletre may be sports car-oriented but it boasts every convenience and comfort feature you’d expect in any SUV model. Nothing is missing on the spec sheet and as an added treat, the sound system was supplied by British brand KEF, a name very familiar to audiophiles. Lotus claims thousands of customers around the world have laid down deposits for an Eletre and it certainly looks like an exciting prospect. The main problem Lotus marketers will face is the fact that the highend SUV/crossover segment is getting very crowded and not all the entrants are going to prosper. e

You have the live-action version of Barbie coming up – a film you star in and produce.

I think it’s every girl’s dream to be Barbie, and every adult’s dream to make a girl’s dream come true, so this does feel like a very special project.

Barbie has been with so many girls growing up all over the globe and we know how vital it was that we got this just

right. We’re all thrilled with the outcome and hope that the audiences are too.

It’s something I’ve been busy working on for some time, now – I think about five years, to be honest.

Was it difficult to put such a ‘young’ story into an adult context?

Yes and no. It’s a playful take on Barbie – it has to be. Film is about detaching expectations and transporting yourself to a different world, and that’s what we did with this film. I’m very proud of it.

I am so thankful and relieved that Greta (Gerwig) agreed to direct. It was quite a stressful period when we were discussing who we wanted and it’s never a certainty that you’re going to get the one you want.

When Greta said yes, it was genuinely one of the happiest days of my life. You can’t believe the amount of work which has gone into it and I’m confident that many dreams will be realised.

You’ve also got Asteroid City on the way – what was it like working with Tom Hanks.

There are no words. It’s strange how actors exist for a long while and then, almost unnoticed, ascend into icon territory, and Tom Hanks is definitely at that level.

He has such a calmness, such a presence. So much kindness, but huge professionalism. I was in awe of him before we did the film and am even more in awe of him now. ›

Barbie

Your movie Babylon was the ultimate tale of Hollywood excess, in an era when the brakes were off as far as how people lived and partied… It was a golden era, that’s for sure. It was that post-War period when people were getting back their energy and ambition; when success was seen as a good thing, not a bad thing. It was a race to the top and it didn’t come packaged with any notion of guilt or shame. People could just go out there and pursue the dreams they wanted.

It was about effort and reward. Of course, not everything works that way, and I think we’re more aware of

that in this generation.

People have described the movie as both a love letter and a criticism of the industry…

I think that’s about right. I like stories that challenge the perception – it’s like the villain in a movie who you end up secretly backing. I think film should challenge our perceptions of what we see, and the movie definitely does that.

Were you disappointed that Amsterdam didn’t reflect in the box office the fact that everyone liked the originality of the movie?

It’s interesting – financiers

will take a different view of a movie to everyone else, and understandably so.

They are looking at the bottom line and a return on investment. For an actor, a director, a producer, and everyone else working on a movie, we gauge it on whether the potential of the project, from the basic material of a script, has been fulfilled artistically.

Amsterdam was a really interesting break for me. It had humour, irreverence and a quirkiness that few of my movies have had, so speaking personally, I count it as one of my best successes.

And a nice filming location too?!

It had its perks!

You have resisted the option to revisit Harley Quinn, when opportunities have come along to do so. Why is that?

I’ve actually found it very therapeutic to step away from Harley, but it’s also terrifying. It’s like having all the security you ever need or crave sat right in front of you, yet you find yourself tossing it out the window, then needing to replace it.

So why do it?

For me it’s about fear – it’s about never accepting you need to take the easy option.

Most actors need constant proof or reassurance that they’ve still got it – whatever ‘it’ is. I am no different on that front. I need to keep taking chances, because standing still with the same project or the same concept is, in fact, going backwards, and I have already felt in certain moments that my career is at risk of a downward trajectory.

It’s fair to say I will do absolutely anything to avoid that from happening.

Does this pursuit of always moving forward come from growing up around several siblings?

You mean, can I blame it on them?! I think the way we grew up was reflective of most other families –the general bickering and snapping, fighting over the front seat, fighting over clothes, fighting over toys… just fighting as all good families do!

But we were always loving each other. I loved it – I look back at my upbringing and it just makes me smile. We’ve all grown up so close. We’re really tight.

What were you like as a kid?

I was really dramatic. Not in throwing tantrums, pulling my hair… well not much but I

loved putting on shows –there was always a show in my house.

I was obsessed with movies and with anything on TV, and whatever I saw, I would re-enact it for my mum who had enough on her plate running a house, looking after four kids and all that.

I’ve read you used to put on shows but charge family members to watch them. It sounds like you were a very shrewd kid who was cut out for this industry! Yeah, I like to think I was quite savvy. I remember stealing my older brother’s stuff and then setting up a stall down the road and selling it all… just terrible! ›

Did you always want to be an actor?

I did, but my parents were trying to steer me towards being a lawyer. I think I would have been good in the courtroom, but law wasn’t where I saw myself. For a long time, they thought film was just a hobby of mine. They were surprised when they saw a poster of me on a huge building in Times Square.

When I came to America that was the dream – to be in Times Square. I did it the hard way – I had to move across to the other side of the world, and did all those menial jobs before getting a break. I know I have been lucky in many ways, but I do believe as well that you make your own luck.

Do you reward yourself enough? Yes and no. In the current era it seems we all have to hold back our pursuit of anything that means self-reward.

I admire the societal view that we need to look after each other – I just worry how genuine it is; and I say that as someone who sees a lot of the things I talk about, from both sides.

I think it’s okay to give ourselves a pat on the back and not feel bad about it or that we’re taking something away from someone else.

Do you sense your first Oscar win is just around the corner, after two nominations? Who knows? For a long time, the nomination was the dream. I kind of worry that if I did win an Academy Award, I would tick off that

childhood dream and wonder where I was going to go next.

I mean, I’m sure I’d find somewhere, but when you dream of something, then you achieve that, and you can’t top it… well, it can be difficult to then think up a new target.

That sounds like a scary personal conundrum…

It is scary, but fear has played a role in where I’ve got to today. I know that sounds strange, because I always play quite loud, confident, bombastic characters, but the fragility of the industry and of being an actor is there all the time.

And the reality is it goes so far beyond past success, or bank balance. Actors are exhibitionists, and for as long as the exhibition is running, everything is fine. But once people stop coming to watch the show, the exhibit is useless, and rejection – ultimate rejection – is a familiar but horrible feeling for any actor.

But you really secretly want to win though? C’mon, be honest. Being nominated has always felt like winning for me, it means more people go to see it, it keeps the conversation going; but yes, I guess I would like to win at some point! e

NEXT MAYOR OF MARBELLA?

Francisco Gómez isn’t a professional lifelong politician, yet he feels the need to stand for mayor in the coming municipal elections that will be held in Marbella and San Pedro Alcántara on Sunday 28th May this year. The businessman with long family roots in Marbella believes it is time for a change, away from established parties and towards a new municipal model that is focused upon effective management of the city and the creation of a clear vision and action plan for its near and medium-term future.

A MANAGEMENT APPROACH

From Francisco’s perspective, what Marbella needs is the foresight of where it wants to be in the future, and a roadmap of how to get there.

“Any sizeable business worth its salt works with an action plan for the next five years or more, that forms part of a greater strategic plan for

the coming two decades, or indeed longer,” says Francisco Gómez, who studied Business Management in Madrid, London and Paris, where he also worked before joining a long-established family business in his hometown, Marbella. “It is a telling detail that shows the difference between politicians and businesspeople, as very few municipalities have such an action plan, much less a strategic one.”

Francisco highlights the fact that after a good start the current Marbella administration has lost its impetus and appears to be freewheeling. “If you look back over the past 50 years, every town hall administration contributed something tangible to the town, from the sports facilities and parks contributed by 1970s mayor, Paco Cantos to the infrastructure and beautification projects of Jesús Gíl. The present mayor has no such legacy to call upon after 16 years in office.”

You might want to point out the creation of the Bulevar ‘park’ in San Pedro, but that was a central government project, not one authored by the Marbella municipality Meanwhile, Marbella’s municipal tax rates are among the highest in the country, outstripping even far more affluent districts of Madrid and Barcelona. “A growing number of people, both locally born and foreign residents, are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with this state of affairs, as we see Marbella slipping down the rankings and in danger of losing some of its appeal to high-networth visitors and residents if things continue this way. Add the situation of crumbling roads and pavements, poorly managed green zones, the chopping of trees that added much-needed shade, and a dire lack of parking, sports facilities, and affordable housing for the people Marbella needs so badly to keep its service economy running.” ›

If you haven’t heard of Francisco Gómez Palma, maybe it’s time to become acquainted, as this Marbella businessman will be running for mayor of the city we live in.

“At the moment, there is little or no action or direction coming from the town hall, so it seems like there isn’t much of a plan. In a competitive world, standing still in this way means you begin to forfeit your strong position and are in danger of losing the right kind of tourist, homebuyer or investor,” says Francisco, “especially when it takes years for a global hotel group to get planning permission for a luxurious new resort hotel.”

BUILDING ON GREAT POTENTIAL

Instead of resting on the town’s laurels, he wants to move forward, nurturing the important tourism and property development sectors while also improving public services and diversifying the economy. “We have a clear vision and action plan in mind for the coming years that involves improving the key elements of our local infrastructure, including the roads, public spaces, sports and conferencing facilities, building a modern business park to complement Málaga’s growing technology park, as

well as creating affordable rental housing on land that belongs to the city.”

“Providing affordable housing is a key element that will enable people to live and work in Marbella, and it won’t cost the city anything as it provides currently unused municipal land that specialised developers will build and rent out at fixed (controlled) rates during the period of the concession grant, after which Marbella will receive a valuable new asset. In other words, it is a future investment that helps the local economy to flow and forms one of the steps in our desire to restore and

build upon the Marbella brand for the benefit of residents, visitors and the economy.”

Above all, Francisco and his colleagues at Por Mi Pueblo believe Marbella needs strong, effective management that makes the most of existing resources. “Things have got slack, but other examples such as Estepona and Málaga show how it can be otherwise, and we will be using them as inspiration to get Marbella back on top and give local citizens and foreign homeowners alike the value they should have from a town like this.” e

Joining them will be Marbella-based DJ, Miss Martha, the internationally renowned DJ Godoy, talented Colombian duo, the JJ Brothers, Japanese violinist, Lamaya, percussionist, Gustavo Gottardi, and Bela C from Sevilla.

THE UNRULY MIND

“Who do you think you are, to do this?” she sniped bitterly. “Who am I, not to?” she retorted defiantly, reaching for a piece of cake – for comfort. I was sitting in a café in London writing my book and it was hard not to be distracted by this dialogue –because it was happening in my head.

Ilived with a vicious inner critic for years. It followed me everywhere. As I presented on TV. As I went on dates. As I lay down to sleep at night... it was exhausting – as maybe you know.

Dr Claire Zammit, founder of the Institute for Woman-Centred Coaching, having worked with 60,000 women, found a critical sense of not being enough is one of the top three inner barriers blocking women. A rocket scientist, a three-times nominated Grammy Award singer, and a Harvard doctor are just a few of the women who were plagued with a variation of this critical self.

HOW TO TAME A VICIOUS INNER CRITIC

Of course, it’s not just women who have a tendency to put themselves down. Neuropsychologist and founder of the Neuroencoding Institute, Joseph McClendon III, calls it the curse of high achievers.

The inner critic shows up differently for different people. In itself, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. It can motivate us. It can keep us safe – it can help us set boundaries and learn from past errors. As making mistakes is an intrinsic part of being human, it follows that we all feel down on ourselves sometimes.

But when the inner critic is excessively negative, it’s hard to live with. It can erode our self-confidence, cause us to make poor decisions, and form unhealthy relationships – it can show up as negative emotions such as anxiety, stress, fear, or depression – that critic can mess up our lives if it gets out of hand.

I tried different strategies to control it over the years. A common tendency is to outright reject the overly critical part of us. I tried that. Mine was definitely not invited to the party. Or the first date. But we can’t really cut off part of ourselves – the critical self is part of our psychology. We can change our psychology if we choose to.

Not all of us have an inner voice – a 2006 study found ninety-six per cent of adults said they have an internal dialogue – other studies say it’s less – but psychologists widely agree the private voice develops in childhood.

Sometimes the inner critic sounds like the voice of a parent, or primary caregiver. Developmental Psychologist, Lev Vygotsky, found this is because the words caregivers used to help us control our behaviour as children can be ‘turned back on the self’

as we learn to regulate our own behaviour. In time, these dialogues can become internalised – they can become unseen and unheard. Until they pop up in the café, or wherever, in the form of uncomfortable thoughts or emotions!

So, it’s clear to see drowning the critic with wine won’t work. Neither will eating to push it down. Watching TV will drown it out for a while. But it will invade the silence at 3am. What’s more, by banishing the critic we meet criticism with criticism! We get caught up in a maze. And we can also dismiss the healthy s of selfregulation.

Understanding this vicious critic might just be a confused kid at heart helps us to be compassionate. What worked all those years ago might not work for us now.

When did you last update your inner operating system? ›

If you want an upgrade, although it might be counter-intuitive, one way is to give up trying to control your critic and get to know it better instead. Get curious. Journalling brings out what’s inside and gives a fresh perspective. And studies show the process of writing by hand helps form new neurological pathways. Get creative. How does the critic show up for you? What does it say? Make it into a character – give it a name.

Realising the critic is not who we are increases our capacity to choose which parts to keep and which parts to update. We can write new scripts for ourselves. We can interrupt the old patterns and reprogramme the critic. We can balance self-criticism with self-praise. With practice, a powerful inner critic can be transformed into a healthy companion and powerful inner friend who loves being invited to the party!

Around 285,000 pets enter the gates of rescue centres in Spain annually and approximately 147,000 of them are adopted by families. While we still have a long way to go, the figures are more promising than they were just a decade ago, when buying a breed dog was less frowned-upon and many fell in love with traditional and new breeds. This is not to say that breed dogs and cats don’t have a strong appeal; many are beautiful and bred for specific weather conditions, activities, or functions.

However, it is hard for the average homeowner to justify buying a pet in current times, when many shelters are overflowing and unable to keep up with costs. This is not only the case in Spain, but also in many other parts of the world. Most people who rescue a pet say that it was actually their pet who saved them. Any cat or dog lover will know that fourpawed friends have an uncanny way of getting under your skin, making you wonder how you ever lived without them. In case you were thinking of giving a rescue pet a ‘forever home’, these are just a few of the many surprising benefits you may enjoy or experience.

» LOWER COSTS

Adopting a pet isn’t usually free, as it entails costs such as the pet’s microchip, and, in some shelters, neutering the pet. In Spain, the cost of adoption generally ranges from approximately €100 (for adult pets) and €180 (for puppies under six months) – though prices may be much lower, depending on the specific shelter. Even higher estimates are far lower, however, than the €1.000 and upwards you can expect to pay for a breed dog.

» PRESERVING A LIFE

It’s a sad fact, but one we should not turn our heads away from. Many centres do not

enable pets to live their natural lifespans, owing to issues like overcrowding and the cost of food and medications. Couple this harsh reality with the fact that Spain heads Europe in terms of pet abandonment and you have a pretty good reason to choose to save a life. National Geographic reports that 700 pets are abandoned in Spain daily – more than in any other European country.

» A LONGER LIFESPAN

A study of over two million dogs found that mixed-breed dogs live for slightly longer than purebred dogs (14.45 vs 14.14 years). The study also showed that small dogs have a longer median lifespan (14.95 years) than ‘giant dogs’ (11.11 years). Mixed-breed cats also have greater longevity than their purebred counterparts, as, like mixed-breed dogs, they have a broader gene pool and a lower risk of inherited disease. The average spayed or neutered house cat lives to 15 years.

Puppy mills often keep their ‘studs and bitches’ outdoors or in cold, inhospitable places where pets can develop illnesses or catch infections. By making a dent in the pockets of backyard breeders, you can do your share to dissuade them from making a quick buck by using and abusing our furry friends. If you needed any more reasons to adopt a pet, here’s a good one – there is a dog or cat right now in a cage who doesn’t know the feeling of being in a loving home. They don’t know what it’s like to rest in a warm spot by the fireplace, where blankets abound and there are people who give them affection, take them for walks, and call them a good boy or girl. Pets are family. You wouldn’t buy a family member, so why would you buy a pet? e

Tim van Buchem, the Executive Head Chef of Breathe restaurant explains how his kitchen has reached optimum efficiency, and we muse over the age-old question on whether corks are the best stoppers for wine.

We checked out what all the noise is about regarding the newest restaurant in Marbella, Nomad in Nueva Andalucía. What we found was a place that must be experienced.

As you arrive at the valet parking area fronting the restaurant and gaze up at the impressive edifice, you can already sense that something special awaits. On ascending a few stairs, you enter a

luxurious domain with an extensive terrace leading off it.

DESIGN WITH PANACHE

The interior is an eclectic mix of elements combining rattan, cane and wooden ceilings, white marble-topped tables surrounded by avant-garde seating – many of the chairs are upholstered with a zebra patterned base – while the sofa surrounds are a mixture of leather and suede in canary yellow. This stylish décor by Studio Hick extends to the terrace which is partially covered and features a 250-year-old olive tree as the magnificent centrepiece. The upper lounge, meanwhile, with outstanding views over Nueva Andalucía, is recommended

for meeting friends for drinks, great entertainment, and bar snacks.

ENTICING INTERNATIONAL MENU

In tune with the entire setup, the menu is refreshingly distinct from other establishments. The range of international dishes has been curated by Executive Chef, Alexandru Craciun, whose resumé includes involvement in several Michelin-star restaurants. The General Manager, Andras Vincze, who hails from Budapest, also boasts extensive international experience, meanwhile mixologist, Alessandro Ferretti, is already famed on the coast for his irresistible cocktails. ›

Our starters certainly lived up to the hype – Cevich€e of Sea Bream, with Tiger milk, chilli, red onion, grilled corn, and sweet potato was fresh and spicy, while the Wild Bluefin Tuna was addictively tangy. The Super Green Salad, both vegan and gluten-free, delivered a genuine immune booster, and the Wood-Fried Salmon Tataki simply melted in the mouth.  These set us up nicely for a selection of main courses that

included a succulent Tel Aviv Fish Shawarma – sautéed marinated sea bass, garlic, tomato, sesame, pickled red onion and chimichurri dressing, a Turkey Schnitzel with slow-cooked egg, chive and truffle dressing, and a Dry-Aged Premium Beef Fillet with foie gras sauce and aromatic butter. These were sumptuously accompanied by Jalapeño Potato Purée and Fries with Truffle, Garlic, and Parmesan. ›

These welcome offerings were supremely paired with a blush Miraval Rosé from Côtes de Provence, fresh and citrusy on a sunny lunchtime. The wine list, meanwhile, is a veritable connoisseurs dream. Assembled by sommelier, David Trillo, it features an impressive range of Champagnes, international vintages, and signature cocktails.

On this occasion, we didn’t have time for dessert, which is a shame as, among others, the Chocolate Pistachio Cake and Strawberry and Calamansi Eton Mess were more than tempting.

Our faithful photographer returned in the evening and can be quoted as saying, “Nomad is amazing! Brilliant show, excellent food and lovely atmosphere.”

Tim van Buchem, the Executive

Head Chef of the natureinspired, three-floor culinary haven, Breathe, always knew he wanted to be a chef. Unlike many others in his profession, his family didn’t have a restaurant, nor were his parents or grandparents involved with gastronomy. His father was a teacher and his mother worked in business and teaching. Tim was born to be a chef; he felt it in his blood from his early boyhood.

THE KITCHEN AS A BATTLE-GROUND

He was born in Indonesia but spent most of his youth in Apeldoorn, Holland, where he enjoyed the best of many worlds.

“We ate different foods at home – including Dutch, Caribbean, Chinese, and Indonesian cuisine. We dined out frequently, always trying something new.”

Tim’s first job at a restaurant was at the age of 15. “I wasn’t interested in the newspaper route,” he says, and the world of the culinary arts beckoned. He began working as a

dishwasher, but the chef noticed he had talent and quickly gave him kitchen duties. Subsequently, Tim obtained a degree in Hotel Management, then enrolled at a chef’s college. Throughout his education, he worked at restaurants to make a living.

When he was 24, he moved to Amsterdam, gaining experience at various establishments. He honed his craft at the prestigious Dylan Amsterdam Hotel, where he came across the renowned Chef Schilo van Coevorden. He was delighted by the quality of

the fresh, seasonal produce employed at the kitchen.

“There were hardcore chefs there, everybody wanted to be the best. The kitchen was an army. It was very regimented and everything had to be done precisely,” he recalls, adding, “We worked hard, but also had a lot of parties. Schilo convinced me to accompany him to Dublin, as he needed a Head Chef. Later, when he opened his eponymous restaurant at Finca Cortesin, he called me again. My wife (whom I had met in Ireland) was happy to come to Spain and we have lived here ever since.” ›

Tim has shone at many prestigious establishments since. He was Executive Chef at Healthhouse Las Dunas (during Andoni Luis Mugartiz’s reign). “That was an amazing experience. I would send his team a concept and soon after, they would send me books filled with ideas and techniques. Mugaritz taught me that nothing is impossible.”

He was a private chef for a family with homes in Marbella

and London and also worked as sous chef at the Puente Romano (which raised the bar for excellence) before landing in Breathe. In 2020, Tim became the Executive Chef of Breathe, during one of the restaurant’s most challenging moments. Tim and his team adapted to the pandemic, “preparing takeaway meals and serving coffee at the door.”

Today, the kitchens are

running at full capacity and Tim and his staff are creating spring and summer dishes. There is plenty to manage, indeed, as Breathe has three floors. Ground, on the first floor, is a healthy breakfast/ lunch establishment. The main restaurant, Breathe, serves international cuisine with Asian influences. In the warmer season, the rooftop sky bar, Air, offers raw food, sushi and signature cocktails.

The new menu features dishes like the slow-cooked wagyu brisket marinated in yakiniku sauce, and barbecuegrilled cauliflower with an Indian spiced marinade, hummus, and tabbouleh. “We don’t use a lot of butter or cream; we like to keep it light and healthy.”

The kitchens run as smoothly as they do because of teamwork. “There is a saying that goes, ‘Every chef has a better right-hand man’, and that hits the nail on the head when it comes to Martin (Head Chef for Breathe restaurant). He’s my right-hand man, my sparring partner, my partner in crime. I know that if I had an emergency and couldn’t be here, the restaurants would still be as efficient.”

As our interview comes to a close, Tim escorts me to the entrance, pointing to the sky and telling me to be careful – it’s raining! Within the verdant oasis that is Breathe, it is difficult to imagine that anything –even the weather – could be less than perfect. Much of this has to do with

the confidence that the chef exudes. Tim is a warrior in the kitchen; one who understands that the kitchen is not only a battlefield, but also a delicate setting for creativity and passion.

LA FINCA RESTAURANT PRESENTS NEW MENU

La Finca, the restaurant of La Bobadilla, a Royal Hideaway Hotel in the La Loja mountain range (Granada) recently presented its new menu, which is heavily focused on local produce. The new dishes were designed by chef Fernando Arjona and his team, who received the invaluable advice of Pablo González of two-Michelin-starred establishment, La Cabaña. When dining at La Finca, look out for exciting Andalusian ingredients such as pistachios from Antequera, asparagus from Huétor Tájar, quisquillas from Motril, chirimoya from the tropical Coast, and flavourful olive oil that is harvested at La Finca itself.

NEW LOCATION FOR MEKSIAN IN PUERTO BANÚS

Trendy establishment, Meksian Restaurant, has re-opened its doors in a brand-new location in Puerto Banús. Elegance, refinement, and haute design mark this gastronomic project, which was conceived to attract a cosmopolitan clientele. Meksian is divided into a reserved area with capacity for 20 people, a restaurant area for 100 diners, and an oyster and Champagne bar for 20 customers. It also has a south-facing terrace with great natural light. The interiors marry Mexican and Asian design features, which reflect the appealing menu. Must-try dishes include the lobster thermidor, sole a la meunière, cured and grilled beef ribeye, traditional Mexican tacos, and a wide variety of sushi options.

ESSENTIAL CORKS

Unlike other wine-related inventions such as gravity-fed presses and stainless-steel tanks, the first use of corks is not recorded. Prior to becoming the standard closure method, practically anything would do the job, from wooden strips to clay-soaked rags.

Although the cork has become the accepted way to keep wine in a bottle, it is not the perfect solution, but it definitely gets full marks for sustainability. It is also the most pleasing aesthetically. There can be few wine lovers who do not get an almost sensual pleasure from hearing that ‘plop’ as the corkscrew does its job. In a domestic setting the act is often hasty and impulsive, but in a quality restaurant it is a class performance. The sommelier will pull the cork and hold it to his nose, inhaling deeply. The cork will then be handed to the customer, who, more often than not, has precious little idea of what to do with it. The sommelier will already have checked the cork’s imprint against the label as validation of the wine’s authenticity. This rather quaint ceremony is mandatory, and at this stage there is no question of the wine being anything but in perfect

condition. Most importantly, it will not be ‘corked’.

What is a corked wine?

Regrettably many people pronounce a wine as ‘corked’ simply because they do not like it. They have probably never had a genuinely corked wine in their lives and ignore the fact that when the sommelier pours a sample into their glass, the main purpose is to check the serving temperature. If it were indeed corked, it would have been immediately rejected on opening.

As someone who has consumed thousands of bottles over many decades, I cannot remember the last time I encountered a genuinely corked wine. If it is not in optimal condition, we might say it is ‘picado’ but more usually it is just plain 'malo'. The commonest reasons for rejecting a wine are oxidisation in the bottle and/or it having been subjected to high temperatures while being stored or transported. Or it may simply be ‘over the hill’.

Currently the battle between the cork lobby and the alternative closure lobby is at its fiercest, and while countries like New Zealand and Australia do not use corks except for expensive reservas, Spain has no plans to renounce them any time soon. One of the only in-depth studies of cork infection on record is a Robert Parker tasting at Spain's Wine Future in 2009 for 600 professionals. A subsequent analysis showed barely one per cent of the wines to have been affected by cork taint. ›

What advantages does cork offer over other types of bottle closures? Innumerable technical studies show that crown and screwcaps are better ways of sealing wine bottles and are comparable for maturing wine. In fact, a correctly fitted cork will keep wine in good condition for many years, thanks to its elasticity and grip. It will also allow miniscule amounts of air into the bottle to help the wine develop without seepage. This micro-oxygenation comes from the cork and the oxygen contained in its millions of cells. For a wine intended to be matured for, say, 15 years, an expert winemaker’s recommendation

is to lay it down for the first five years and then alternate annually between vertical and horizontal positions. This ensures the cork is kept sufficiently moist at both ends.

The giant wine producer Penfolds, based in Australia, where 80 per cent of bottles are closed with screwcaps, seals its best wines with cork. It is not alone. Wines worldwide of any quality tend to have corks, even if great names like Château Margaux have allegedly been experimenting with alternatives. There is still a long way to go. Can we imagine Pingus or Lafite sealed with screwcaps?

The principal advantage of

alternative closures is their cost and convenience, and the fact that wine doesn’t need to be stored horizontally. Being made in high precision factories they are very accurately produced; no corkscrew is needed and there will never be fragments of cork floating on the wine.

The Elvax seal, as one example, consists of a glass stopper with a tasteless seal on its shoulder which is alcohol and acid resistant and allows the passage of a little oxygen. It looks good, is recyclable, although, like other alternative seals, it remains to be seen if it will be any good for fine wine over the long term. e
