FILMS TO STREAM AT HOME THIS JULY

If you already caught gems like Extraction on Netflix, then you know that the quality of home viewing is right on par with the very best cinema you are used to catching at the theatre. We bring you a few more suggestions for some essential movie watching during July.

COMPILED BY MARISA CUTILLAS

SCOOB!

This cute animation will be as fascinating to kids as it will be to teens and even adults in the family. It is a tad more sophisticated than the TV cartoon version of Scooby Doo, without losing its teen-like charm. This version delves into the origins of it all: Scoob and Shaggy’s first meeting and their initial alliance with young investigators Fred, Velma and Daphne. Their latest enemy is ghost dog Cerberus, who is keen on unleashing a dogpocalypse upon the world. CATCH IT ON ALL THE USUAL PLATFORMS (AMAZON PRIME VIDEO, GOOGLE PLAY, ETC.).

CAPONE

Tom Hardy stars in this biographical film about eponymous gangster, Al Capone. It begins when Capone, aged 40, has just been released from jail for tax evasion. Forced to sell many of his belongings to pay off debts, he begins hallucinating about millions of dollars he thinks he has hidden but cannot find. His mental deterioration starts alienating everyone around him and he becomes crippled with guilt and regret. This is the tragic story of a crime boss whom nobody knew was this vulnerable. AVAILABLE ON AMAZON PRIME.

THE LOVEBIRDS

This cool rom-com features sex cults, corrupt cops, and The Amazing Race and it also stars two of America’s coolest comedians: Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae. They play Jibran and Leilani – an ex-couple forced together to solve a crime. The film commences with a light, airy tone but soon becomes much darker and sinister as the couple discover the dark world of sex parties, blackmail rings, and a deadly enemy in the police force. AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX.

THE BANKER

Two African-American businessmen in the 1950s hire a white man to pose as the company CEO while they in turn pretend to be a janitor and chauffeur. The film, which is based on a true story, does an excellent job of showcasing discrimination in business at its worst. It celebrates entrepreneurship, ethical business, and having fun while making money but its core is serious and, as a whole, it has a suspenseful feel. The actors aren’t half-bad, either. Nicholas Hoult, Samuel L. Jackson, and Anthony Mackie never disappoint! WATCH IT ON APPLETV+.

ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE

This film is a great choice for those after something romantic, light, and funny. It tells the tale of two friends (played by Randall Park and Ali Wong, who wrote the movie) who meet years after losing their virginity to each other when they were teens. The movie features a cameo from Neo himself – Keanu Reeves, and a rocking soundtrack with hits by Bowie, Lizzo, and D’Angelo. AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX.
