EN 388:2003 STANDARD The EN 388:2003 is the European standard governing gloves that provide protection against mechanical
risks. This standard applies to all kinds of protective gloves in respect of physical and mechanical aggressions caused by abrasion, tearing, blade cut and puncture. It is mandatory for all safety glove manufacturers to meet the requirements, which include clear marking rules, appropriate testing methods and ensuring correct information is supplied. The most frequent occupational hand injuries are caused by cuts and abrasions. The EN 388:2003 Standard allows you to understand what level of protection a glove has by requiring gloves to be

determines if a glove has sufficient impact protection by isolating the area with explicit impact protection (usually backhand and knuckles) and impacting it with an impact energy of 5J (1.7kg). Impact protection is rated as follows: (P) Pass, (F) Fail, (X) Not Tested. Gloves not offering impact protection are not subjected to testing. It is important to note, however, that where the material of a glove does not have a blunting effect on the blade, the Coup Test remains the reference test as this test has been made more reliable with improved control of the blade. Regardless, the level of performance according to the ISO 13997 test may still be reported. The pictogram below demonstrates how the new certification standards will look on each glove.

QUESTIONS ABOUT EN 388 1 WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME? This new standard will not be applied retrospectively

4 WHEN WILL THE NEW STANDARDS GO INTO AFFECT?

as is the norm with any new PPE standard, so you can

but manufacturers will have 5 years to fully transition into the new standard for all gloves produced.

A key benefit of the new standard, however, is that

5 ARE THE ABRASION, TEAR AND PUNCTURE TESTS AFFECTED?

products with higher levels of protection will more easily be identified.

No, these tests are not affected.

2 WON’T USING 2 DIFFERENT CUT METHODS CONFUSE PEOPLE? The new standard allows for both the Coup and TDM tests to be quoted, but where the ISO cut score is noted this will be used for certification.

3 HOW DOES THE NEW STANDARDS RELATE TO THE EN388:2003 CUT STANDARD RATING? It’s too early to create direct links, but under the EN388:2016 standard, there is more information to allow you to select the right glove for you and your application. According to cut technology innovators like DSM Dyneema, the cut-resistant market will “roughly fall into the following segments according to cut performance: A

multipurpose gloves;

B/C most common applications in industries requiring medium cut resistance (metal and glass processing for example); D gloves suitable for applications where high cut resistance is required; E/F very specific, very high risk and high exposure applications (in the meat processing industry for example) that demand ultra-high cut resistance.”

TYPES OF GLOVE COATING WHICH COATING IS BEST FOR YOU? NITRILE PALM-COATED GLOVES

POLYURETHANE-COATED WORK GLOVES

•• Excellent punctures and tear resistance (3x more than rubber)

•• Great stretch, strength, softness and low particulate shed

•• Stands up well to oil •• Perform well in a range of temperatures

•• Non-allergenic properties •• Unique “grippy” quality without being sticky

between -4°C (25°F) and 149°C (300°F), however it is not flame-resistant •• Can be foamed to behave like a sponge, so that when it is in contact with smooth, oily surfaces, oil on the surface is soaked up, displaced and

•• Abrasion resistance •• Excellent resistance to solvents, fats, greases, gasoline, oxidation and ozone •• Poor resistance to hot water and is not recommended for use above 79°C (175°F)

grip is improved considerably

NITRILE MICROPORE PALM-COATED GLOVES Same characteristics as the Nitrile, however it has an added foaming process that uses “micropore” technology to create a bubbled surface that will not allow oil to penetrate to the hand while absorbing it at the same time. Micropore technology infuses nitrile coatings with millions of tiny pores, which displaces oils and liquids when pressed against smooth surfaces. This in turn creates suction that further increases grip.
