CTRLS CONGRATULATES THE WINNERS OF CIO 200 AND VALUES THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE INDIAN ECONOMY AND INDUSTRY

EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE FROM PAGE 20

EDITOR’S  LETTER

CHANGEAGENTS 200 WAS NEED OF THE HOUR Finally, the biggest CIO event in India

ChangeAgents 200 or CIO200 got over on 30th November and 1st December. CIOs from across India and some from Middle East, APAC and Europe exchanged their view points on various topics starting from digital transformation to security to Block Chain and Big Data. Not only they exchanged their view points with each other but also played cricket and Golf with other. The uniqueness was these people were in various age groups and various vertical industries and they mingled and extended their camaraderie. Some of these people had also visited CTRLs DC based out of Noida. The point here is that the more these people mingle with each other and talk to each other the easier it is to deal with the complexity of technology. One must admit that the industry dynamics is changing very fast and requires different set of technologies and skill sets. Everything is becoming very targeted and result oriented. Millennials are playing major role in the decision making. The CEOs are becoming worried as to how they can keep their organizations nimble in order to adapt to the customers’ requirements. And the CIOs are becoming cogwheels of change. Their decision of right technology

COVER STORY

NEXT MONTH SPECIAL

TECHNOLOGY IN 2019 THAT CIOS SHOULD WATCH OUT FOR

The next issue’s main feature observe the technological landscape for 2019 and what technologies will be the biggest influencers in CIO plans. The story will shed light on questions like trends that will reach maturity in 2019, new adoption trends in Indian Enterprises, the approach of CIOs and the role of technology partners, digital transformation aspirations, IT budget for 2019 and adding value through projects. The fields that will be observed are Datacenter Space, Enterprise Mobility, Industry 4.0, Enterprise Security, Cloud Computing, Machine Learning and BI.

adoption is changing the future course of their organization. But at the same time, they are also falling pray to the exorbitant finance allocation on the technology acquisition which is not going well with the CFOs and CEOs. In this situation, it becomes necessary that they learn from each other and adopt the latest technologies. Today, technologies including IOT, robotics, AI, Block Chain are absolutely required but the complexity and right sizing is a real challenge. Without understanding the complexity and making the right major of technology can entail an unnecessary investment which neither the CFO nor the CEO stand to. So, this kind of events help the CIOs exchange their thoughts. We know there are various online platforms where they also talk to each other on these aspects, but a one on one environment does not have any comparison. Therefore, our effort was to bring the whose and who of the CIO community and create an environment where they share with each other under one roof. We try to become innovative every year. This year we tried some games with the serious discussion. Next year, we will also add certain elements which will be very interesting for the CIOs. Until then keep yourself informed about this event and be in touch with us.

Nutanix Xi IoT Brings Intelligence to the Edge

Siemens, Aruba form strategic partnership for integrated networks Siemens and Aruba announced a strategic partnership focused on bridging the Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) worlds. Based on the complementary portfolios, Siemens and Aruba are able to support customers with highly reliable, secure and insightful data networks enabling high plant and network availability. Customers benefit from integrated networks with proven interoperability from factory floors to corporate offices based on Siemens’ expertise as a leading provider of industrial Ethernet network components and Aruba’s as a leader in wired and wireless LAN infrastructure.

EXECUTIVE

Digitalization, Industrie 4.0 and Industrial IoT are raising new challenges because now data increasingly must traverse the boundary separating IT and OT. Typically, deterministic, industrial OT networks are not coupled tightly with enterprise IT networks. This results in gaps in data and device visibility, application assurance, availability, and security. Bridging that divide requires deep expertise in both worlds and knowledge of the respective operational and security requirements. In the IT world, cybersecurity and trustworthy data are top priorities, whereas in the OT world, plant availability and manufacturing output targets are most important.

Nutanix announced the general availability of Xi IoT, a new edge computing service offered as part of the company’s Xi Cloud Services. Combining the simplified elegance of core Nutanix solutions with a streamlined approach, Xi IoT eliminates complexity, accelerates the speed of deployment and elevates developers to focus on the business logic powering IoT applications and services. In 2017, 3 billion enterprise IoT edge devices generated up to 30 times more data (256 ZB) than the 30+ million nodes across public and private cloud data centers. But the current IoT model in which the massive amounts of data on edge devices is sent back to a centralized cloud for processing has severely limited the ability of customers to make real-time, actionable decisions from intelligence gained at the edge. For customers, deriving value from this massive amount of data is rife with latency issues, lack of scalability, lack of autonomy, and compliance and privacy issues. Unlike traditional IoT models, the Xi IoT platform delivers local compute, machine inference, and data services to perform real-time processing at the edge. Xi IoT Data Pipelines can securely move intelligently analyzed data to a customer’s public (Azure, AWS or GCP) or private cloud platform of choice for long-term analysis. Edge and core cloud deployments all operate on the same data and management plane, so Xi IoT customers have seamless, simplified insight into their deployment.

Transformation strategy for the Digital CIO

GLOBAL UPDATE

Cyberattacks cost Large Enterprise approx. US$10.3 Mn in Economic Losses

A Frost & Sullivan study commissioned by Microsoft reveals that a large-sized organization in India incurs an average of US$10.3 million of economic loss from cyberattacks whereas a mid-sized organization incurs an average of US$11K. The study, titled “Understanding the Cybersecurity Threat Landscape in Asia Pacific: Securing the Modern Enterprise in a Digital World”, aims to provide business and IT decision makers with insights on the economic cost of cybersecurity breaches in

the Asia-Pacific region identify the gaps in organizations’ cybersecurity strategies. The study involved a survey of 1,300 business and IT decision makers ranging from midsized organizations (250 to 499 employees) to large-sized organizations (>than 500 employees). The study reveals that more than three in five organizations (62%) surveyed in India have either experienced a cybersecurity incident (30%) or are not sure if they had one as they have not performed proper forensics or data breach assessment (32%). “As companies embrace the opportunities presented by cloud and mobile computing to connect with customers and optimize operations, they take on new risks,” said Keshav Dhakad, Group Head & Assistant General Counsel, Corporate, External & Legal Affairs (CELA), Microsoft India “With traditional IT boundaries disappearing the adversaries now have many new targets to attack. Companies face the risk of significant financial loss, damage to customer satisfaction and market reputation—as is evident from high-profile breaches this year.”

38% firms expect $10 million In ROI as a result of IT modernization

With the ideals of the digital economy quickly permeating into every industry and impacting every business, transforming a company’s IT infrastructure to bring products to market faster and

remain competitive has become inevitable. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) is still considered an emerging technology, it has already started delivering considerable business value.

The survey shows that enterprises are frantically working to test and launch Artificial Intelligence initiatives, and these initiatives are already delivering results. “There is no doubt that AI is helping deliver revenue growth with better customer experiences, increasing innovation, and improving operational effectiveness. However, most firms are just getting started, and many are pursuing a broad array of uncoordinated AI initiatives.” Says Niladri Saha, Director- Modern

Data Center, Dell EMC, India,. “Therefore, it is crucial for CIOs to take the helm, engage the lines of business on their AI initiatives, and ultimately drive the AI agenda to ensure successful outcomes and mitigate risks. There is a need to invest in new software applications, infrastructure as well as platforms necessary for AI. This will help modernize existing systems to better support the ever-increasing number of AI initiatives, ultimately leading to better business outcomes”.

IT complexity holding back digital transformation

Citrix has released its research into “The State of IT Complexity in India” that revealed Indian businesses are struggling with complexity. Almost all Indian businesses (99%) have started their digital transformation journey,

but only 34% have reached maturity. This complexity and confusion about the IT environment, impacts an organization’s agility, insights and ability to digitally transform. The rise in complexity is felt by organizations in India. Thirty-eight per cent of respondents from India expressed that their organization’s IT environment was more or significantly more complex than two years ago. The sheer volume of applications and data that need to be maintained and secured has risen in response to employee’s need to get work done anywhere at any time. This pressure is also fuelling Shadow IT, 98 per cent of the

respondents from India, stated that they use non-business approved applications to get work done. Meaning applications are running in the organization’s environment unknown and unsecured. Makarand Joshi, Area Vice President & Country Head, India Subcontinent, Citrix said; “The study found a strong correlation between the increasing levels of complexity felt within organizations, and the delay of digital transformation maturity.” Joshi further added “The future has never looked more complex. IT leaders are being asked not only to deliver IT services, but also to improve business outcomes. DECEMBER 2018   ENTERPRISE IT WORLD

TAKING THE NEXT STEP IN BECOMING THE CHOICE OF CIOS GLOBALLY With a phenomenal growth in recent years and an ever-widening and satisfied customer base, CtrlS Datacenters is all set for the next phase of global expansion with rapid executive presence expansion, hoard of new solutions and massive plans of infrastructure expansion and Hyper Scale Datacenters in pipeline.

SRIDHAR PINNAPUREDDY, FOUNDER AND CEO, CTRLS DATACENTERS

“The CIOs struggle in managing complexity. We do not merely offer a cloud service but rather a solution to tackle this, so that they can put their energy into the business. We make sure that we are there as a partner in the customer success story.”

CtrlS Datacenters has been creating quite a buzz in the market in the last few years. Can you shed some light on the growth from the customer acquisition point of view in this time? If you look at our growth in the last two years, 16 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    DECEMBER 2018

the numbers almost tripled between Cloud and Datacenter Services. Two years ago, both the companies put together, we were somewhere around INR 300 Crore. Today, we have crossed the INR 1000 Crore mark, becoming the number one player in India. But our primary goal is not

just to be Numero Uno in the country. We’ve been focusing on a number of answers. The biggest questions revolve around how to strengthen the quality of services, how to build a team that would allow us to scale the business, and which new markets we could go after. We’ve increased

the management team by almost 75 per cent. We have increased focus on net promoter score and reorganized into different category of customers and given different NPS targets for different divisions. In large enterprise category, we achieved an NPS of 55%. Only a few companies like Apple and Amazon have been able to achievethat kind of an NPS. This relentless focus on improving customer quality of services has given us good momentum. Adding to that, we started intensive expansion in our infrastructure capabilities. We are increases the scale of Datacenters, with two new establishments after the Bengaluru DC which was launched in the start of 2018. Both of these projects are at the finishing stages. We’ll see the launch of a 12MW facility in Hyderabad which will be followed by a 15MW facility in Mumbai. Further in our expansion plans, we have two more Datacenters in pipeline. Land is being acquired, plans are being drawn out, finances are being organized, and teams are being built to carry forward these projects. These will be Hyperscale (100 and 150 MW) and they’ll put us on the map globally as world’s No#1 Tier 4 Datacenter service provider. In terms of executive team expansion,we have tripled the number of VPs and above ranks. We have brought in personnel with specialties and specific skills like cloud security and so forth. We’ve built a world class product with Cloud4C with top notch security and have built a number of such solutions for core banking technologies. We’ve built our expertise on public cloud.A couple of years ago we had three or four of us spearheading the entire business. Today, we have a management and decision making team of 30 plus seasoned executives. The number of workforce is going up every day. Can you tell us about your customer base? What is the percentage of return customers? Our customers are giving us more business as the partnership keeps growing. If you see our growth, around 40% are new customers. The rest 60% are our existing customers giving us more business. We’ve realized that with our DNA, our Tier 4 approach, investments into greater technology, resiliencyand with the quality of manpower, we offer greater value to large enterprises. We felt that the smaller clients are better served by the Hyper Clouds. So we encouraged few of such clients to join our Cloud platform. Cloud4C’s automated platform has to come in the picture and that’s where the SMBs are living today. It has about 250 large customers. Overall, there are 3000 plus customers in the ecosystem.

What are the value additions that you have been building upon that are your market differentiators? The biggest value addition is that we are taking away the pain of managing applications from the CIOs. CIOs in the market are taking infrastructure services from Public Clouds and Datacenter services. They take applications from someone else, security from another vendor and application management from someone else.Traditionally, they have 7-8 vendors instead of a single SLA. For example, take the case of a Bank which has 40 different applications, multiplied by 7 different vendors. The CIOs struggle in managing this complexity. With us, they have an application level SLA that takes away all the pain. We do not offer a cloud service but rather a solution, so that the CIO can put his energy into the business. We take away the pain of app management and give them a single SLA and Application login, thus reducing the cost in the process and increasing the uptime. This takes away the management headache. That clicked for us and enabled us to put in a differentiated offering on the table that no other player is able to offer. The market will surely follow suit soon. Our biggest USP is that once a client comes in with us, we take total ownership. We make sure that we are there as a partner in their success story. Apart from the Banking Community Cloud, what are some of the other Community Clouds under your umbrella? So we initially came up with the Banking and the SAP ERP community cloud. Both of them are world’s 1st Tier – 4 Community clouds. Next big thing we did was the Insurance Community Cloud. The fourth thing we did was the Government Community Cloud. Governmentsacross the world have unique needs. Their category of security is very different. Every country has a different philosophy but at the same time they have different clients. So we thought of addressing these needs and did it for the Australian Government, Singapore Government and of course Indian Government.Right now we are making it compatible and qualified for the US Federal System. In terms of future initiatives, there are a couple of more Community Clouds in the pipeline. Although a big plus of such an offering is that the cost goes down, cost in itself is not a big factor for large enterprises. It is the quality of services and specific capabilities that the Community Cloud offers which directly cater to the needs of the vertical. Value proposition will get better

over a period of time. To give you a roadmap, right now Banking and ERP Clouds are in the second stage of maturity which means we are automating. We now have the volume to invest. As a result of this automation, each and every project can have a surety of success and we can do them at one-fourth of the cost. Most importantly, human errors are eliminated, time to correct is automated. With the EU GDPR and now the Indian DPR, compliance is coming to the space in a big way. How does it change the scheme of things for you? Data privacy regulations are going to help us. The core reason is that the cost of compliance for every individual company will be at least 5 times more than us. Secondly, the quality of manpower in a company to ensure compliance versus the man power we have is a huge plus. Our Compliance Head is the former Global Cybersecurity Head for one of India’s top-3 IT companies. He has an equally qualified and experienced management team under him. It is not easy for any individual company to have such a team on its payroll. Thirdly, processes and technologies that we can deploy with our resources, individual companies find doing it very hard. So, it’s a win-win for clients and us. To be compliant, going to a service provider who specializes in it will cut down the cost dramatically to as low as maybe one-fifth plus you get SLAs where the solution provider takes care of compliance with minimum effort from the customer’s end. The more the compliances, the more does the Community Cloud’s value goes up. Adding to this, the depth over a period of time these Community Clouds are able to offerto a vertical will be phenomenal and at a different scale. Can you shed some light on your international client base? Right now we are operational in 20 countries with close to about 200 large clients globally. The growth is exclusively by word of mouth through references without any push from us. We are going to address each and every global market in due time. This involves building a successful team similar to India in each of those countries. That’s the next phase of our expansion plan. We’ll be entering China after sorting out compliance and policy processes. In Japan, we are already seeing good traction with two of the world’s largest conglomerate. We’ll be strengthening our base in the US and will be starting business in South America. Eastern Europe and Africa are in the pipeline and await the final steps. CLOUD - A CIO GROWTH ENABLER

CIOs have been playing a key role in their respective enterprises ever since the Industry worldwide embraced information technology to power businesses. Their roles have evolved from managing an MIS, electronic processing department (EDP) to managing core IT functions. BY: B.S.RAO, Vice President (Marketing), CtrlS Datacenters

hief Information Officers (CIOs) are key to the economy as they ensure the business is enabled by information technology to deliver value to stakeholders by enhancing customer satisfaction, enhancing top line through rich analytical insights, implementing new digital strategies to provide competitive edge and secure the business by implementing robust security, risk, disaster management strategies. The CIO is expected to be a Change Agent – one who ushers in digital transformation through competitive and sustainable IT strategies – this is key to the CIO’s career growth.

THE WORLD HAS CHANGED In the last ten decades, the world of technology has undergone rapid changes, from Mainframes

to Tablets, from basic phones to Skype and from sending communication through telex to conducting business on WhatsApp. From physical banking to digital banking, from transferring money through money order to transferring money through mobile apps such as PayTM the world has come a long way. Information technologies too have witnessed rapid changes from adoption of personal computers to high-end servers, storage on floppy disks/ tapes to robust SAN/NAS technologies, from basic anti-virus to robust UTM devices and tools, from basic copper based connectivity to high speed fiber links, and from physical hardware to cloud computing. The world has changed completely – and this is posing constant challenges to the CIOs’ mind to ensure the business embraces rapid technology in line with the changes in the

technology world – leading to sleepless nights for majority of CIOs. In true sense, they are all worried a lot and stressed as they need to cope not only with the rapidly changing world of technology but also meet the demands of business. The role of CIO too has undergone a transformation from being an IT facilitator to an IT Strategist – Those who are not playing the role of an IT Strategist (or) the role of change agent are likely to be decimated in the War of Technology Change.

COST OF TECHNOLOGY IS DROPPING A laptop with basic configuration may have cost Rs. 100,000 a decade ago in India – today it costs one-fourth of that price. The cost of 64 Mbps bandwidth was seventy lac in the year 2000, today a 1 Gbps link would cost just a mere one percent of that cost. A mobile phone call would cost Rs. 16 (for outgoing and incoming), today it costs around 10p whereas incoming calls are free today. AV Conferencing was very costly in early 1990s in India, but today we have new tools and technologies such as Skype, Zoom etc at a fraction of that cost. The CIOs are witnesses to this technology transformation. Similarly, CIOs have been investing in capital expenditure for hardware, storage, network, security devices, software tools etc, but today cloud technologies are available at a fraction of the cost. SaaS provides a software on a pay-as-you-use model without any upfront and annual mainte-

nance costs. Similarly, IaaS provides hardware, storage and security devices. Cloud in its various forms Public, Private, Community Cloud are providing the SaaS, IaaS, PaaS services. CIOs world over are deploying non-critical and some of the mission critical applications on cloud. In fact, it is reported that 60% of CIOs have deployed their non-mission critical applications on cloud, while 30% of them have deployed mission critical applications. Same is true with cloud technologies – the cost of technology is dropping here too in a significant manner. It is therefore imperative that CIOs adopt cloud to bring in organization efficiency, scalability at the speed of business, enhance efficiency, productivity, and gain cost savings and shift their focus on core business.

MAKING A FINANCIAL CASE TO ADOPT CLOUD The transformation or a shift is not possible unless the organization believes it can benefit

economically and strategically from deployment of any technology. A CIO is expected to perform a cost benefit analysis and estimate the ROI of embracing cloud technology. It is important for a CIO to obtain the buy-in from the CEO, CFO and Board in some cases based on the quantum of investment.

HOW DOES CLOUD HELP CIOS? Eliminate capital costs and turn IT into a profit center: CIOs can benefit from subscription pricing model available with cloud computing platforms. The pay-as-you-go model significantly reduces risk because projects can be scaled based on customer satisfaction. Also in cloud no upfront capital cost for purchase of hardware is needed, hence the capex saved can be reinvested in business. Reduce operational cost: Since cloud offers multiple environments which benefit developers, testers, trainers and end users. All these environ-

CIOs can make use of available services that include administration, centralized management and governance, etc. and significantly reduce project time and cost. Eliminate in-house technical resources: The cloud service provider handles all resources needed to support applications and maintenance. CIOs have the advantage of optimizing cloud resources for more business growth and reduce in-house people resources as much as possible and retain a lean team, saving cost. Overcome challenges in integration: Integration is easy with cloud models as enterprise applications can be quickly deployed and made available. Existing legacy databases from major business categories such as SCM, HRM, ERP, etc. can be integrated easily with enterprise applications such as SAP, Oracle, etc. Accelerates innovation: Cloud deployment significantly minimizes time, expertise and technology resources needed for innovation. CIOs can quickly provision resources for experimentation cycles or innovation thus enhancing time to market, provide competitive advantage to business including enhanced top/ bottom-line. Better customer engagement: Cloud systems have the ability to handle large data storage and perform analysis on them efficiently. CIOs can use this analysis to gain business insights easily from customer data and use it for improving business outcomes and introduce new product (or) service offerings such as mobile applications. PERFORMANCE 2018

WE HAVE REACHED A TURNING POINT IN ENTERPRISE SECURITY With the rapid surge in threat landscape, the global cybersecurity market is at an all time high. Increased boardroom concern, growth in CIO budgets and a massive focus on security innovation by vendors like Sophos is setting the tone for a proactive and predictive approach to enterprise security.

SUNIL SHARMA,

MANAGING DIRECTOR – SALES, SOPHOS INDIA AND SAARC

“Security has reached a turning point and companies need to take an active, layered and predictive approach to security. They must be diligent and proactive with best practices and deploy in-depth defenses that expect attacks and communicate with each other to stop threats.”

From an overall Cyber Security growth PoV, how was the calendar year 2018 from a global and India market perspective? IThe global cybersecurity market is expected to grow from USD 152.71 billion in 2018 to USD 248.26 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 10.2% during 2018–2023. Whereas India’s cyber security market for products and services will grow up 56 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    DECEMBER 2018

to $35 billion in 10 years from the present $4.5 billion. Ransomware and high-profile data breaches continued to grab the headlines in 2018.Ransomware as a Service (“RaaS”) was big business on the dark web, where criminals sell kits that buyers can use to make and distribute their own ransomware. A SophosLabs threat report revealed that hackers are looking beyond traditional ‘spray and pray’

style attacks that are automatically distributed through millions of emails, and turning to premeditated and targeted ransomware attacks. These are more damaging than if delivered from a bot, as human attackers can find and stake out victims, think laterally, trouble shoot to overcome roadblocks, and wipe out backups so ransoms must be paid. Elsewhere, we saw a rise in the volume of

PERFORMANCE 2018

malware payloads as hackers covertly infected computers with software to do the calculations needed to generate cryptocurrency and kept the proceeds for themselves. As the threat landscape continues to evolve and hackers find new ways to breach security, the reality is that organizations can no longer build strategies for “if ” they suffer a breach but “when”. How was SOPHOS performance for this calendar year from global as well as India perspective? In the fiscal year ending 3/31/2018, Sophos reported that billings grew by 22% to $769 million and revenue increased by 21% to $641 million. Overall, Sophos continues to see a robust demand environment, with a doubledigit increase in billings from new customers, and Sophos Central and Intercept X both continuing to establish momentum throughout the quarter. What activities differentiated you from competition and helped increase market share? Sophos continues to execute against its core mission: deliver innovative, simple, highly-effective cybersecurity solutions to IT professionals and the channel that serves them. Sophos is the only security vendor that affirms its loyalty to the channel community in its mission statement, a testament to the company’s unwavering dedication to its channel-best approach. Sophos’ portfolio spans endpoint and network security, plus web, email, encryption, and mobile protection. Sophos is the only security vendor that maintains strength in both network and endpoint security, led by the growth of its most powerful next-generation products, InterceptX and XG Firewall. Sophos’ Synchronized Security and Sophos Central leverages the power of these products by allowing them to share information and respond automatically to attacks. In summary, our focused strategy and investment in nextgen products and technology has enabled Sophos to continue to grow our customer base in India and across the globe. How was your customer acquisition growth? What were the customer engagement programs of the year and what was the outcome? As we enter the 2019 financial year our total subscription base continues to grow and we now have more than 300,000 end customers and 100 million end users around the world protecting their businesses with Sophos’ comprehensive cybersecurity solutions. Our flagship event Sophos Inner circle, which aims to

build a community of technology specialists and cybersecurity practitioners in India, provides attendees the opportunity to network and relax, as well as participate in technical briefings and learning sessions. Customers around the world are also engaging with Naked Security, Sophos’s awardwinning blog, giving you news, opinion, advice and research on cybersecurity issues and the latest internet threats. We continue to partner in marketing and promotional activities that help us engage with our target audiences in India throughout the year. Which verticals embraced your solutions maximum and why? Cybersecurity is becoming the number one priority for businesses of all sizes and across all sectors. Customers across BFSI, government & defense, education, manufacturing, healthcare, e-commerce, IT&ITES choose Sophos’ comprehensive security suite to better protect their businesses. Name some of the best customers and why those were best? At Sophos, we constantly work hard to innovate and deliver the best possible cyber protection to our customers. We have a wide range of customers in India across a growing number of vertical market sectors. We have been protecting Financial Institutions like AAVAS Financer Limited with Next-Gen Security. In Education we have been Simplifying Enduser and Network Security at institutions like Manipal University. Point out some of CIO Challenges in 2018 and your experience in mitigating them? Cybersecurity challenges that CIOs face are highlighted in our recently published threat report. To summarize it, 2018 was the year that targeted ransomware hit the headlines and we will likely see more copycat style attacks continue to hit businesses into next year. We also saw criminals make greater use of readily available system admin tools to access an IT network, move around and then steal sensitive data or drop ransomware into the network. The reality is that cyberattacks of all kinds are happening constantly. Most organizations are set up for automatic attacks not human interactive attacks, and once cybercriminals get into a system, they will move around. Security has reached a turning point and companies need to take an active, layered and predictive approach to security, meaning they must be diligent and proactive with best practices and deploy in-depth defenses that expect

attacks and communicate with each other to stop threats. Traditional security methods are no longer enough to prevent constant and changing cyberattacks. Sophos recommends that businesses implement the following cybersecurity best practices to protect themselves from attacks: l Layered security that blocks attackers from all points of entry and from gaining access once inside a network l Rigorous and diligent patching l Server-specific security with Lockdown capabilities and anti-exploit protection, especially for un-patched systems l Security that synchronizes and shares intelligence to activate lockdowns l Endpoint and server security with credential theft protection l Hard to crack and unique IT admin passwords with multi-factor authentication l Improve password policies: Encourage employees to use secure password managers, longer passphrases and the non-reuse of passwords for multiple accounts - How to pick a proper password. l Improved account access controls: Enact sensible policies to secure idle accounts; automatically lock accounts and alert IT staff after a number of failed login attempts l Regular phishing tests and staff education about the perils of phishing What all products you rolled out in the year, what was the adoption rate of those new products? Sophos is the only security vendor that maintains strength in both network and endpoint security and continued to expand its InterceptX and XG Firewall portfolios in 2018. Following the announcement of predictive protection to InterceptX in January, Sophos added Nextgen endpoint protection to its server product and also delivered Intercept X Advanced with EDR. Sophos’ Synchronized Security and Sophos Central leverage the power of these products by allowing them to share information and respond automatically to attacks. What kind of revenue/ market share growth you achieved this year? In the fiscal year ending 3/31/2018, Sophos reported that billings grew by 22% to $769 million and revenue increased by 21% to $641 million. Overall, Sophos continues to see a robust demand environment, with a doubledigit increase in billings from new customers, and continued technology innovation across our product portfolio. “We are successfully mitigating CIO challenges by moving away from being a traditional CSP to providing digital services through high automation, self-service customer models and our patented auto scaling technology.”

From an overall Infrastructure PoV including DC and Cloud, how was the calendar year from a global and India market standpoint? As Gartner recently reported, the DC spending in India was up by 2.6% YoY in comparison to the global growth of 4.5%. Cloud adoption is definitely on the rise and the Indian market for the calendar year grew to upwards of $1.8Bn at 30-35% CAGR. Global cloud markets grew to $186Billion with SaaS and IaaS driving the highest adoption. How was ESDS’ performance from a global as well as India perspective? ESDS’ growth is more than double the global % growth and from India’s perspective as well. share. Our unique offering which is the Community Cloud, is especially created for customers in Enterprise, Government, BFSI, SAP and Start-ups. We have introduced a first-of-its kind ‘Community Cloud’ concept, which is exclusively tailored to meet the requirements of a particular community/industry. Which verticals embraced ESDS maximum and why? Almost each and every vertical is capitalizing on their success because of our services and solutions. REDEFINING BACKUP FOR PROGRESSIVE ENTERPRISES Commvault saw significant moves in the right directions with simplified product portfolio and enhanced customer engagement as it vies for greater market presence with innovation as the hallmark of product vision and leadership.

“We help companies worldwide manage, protect, activate and drive more value and business insights out of their data to transform modern data environments.”

HUZEFA MOTIWALA,

SENIOR DIRECTOR, SYSTEMS ENGINEERING APAC, COMMVAULT

From an overall back up POV including DC and Cloud, how was the year for global and India market? The calendar year has surely been an interesting one globally and for India. Apart from facing more data than ever, data is also leaving the data center and recognized as one of the critical assets in an enterprise. A look into the secondary copy world, typically created by backup or archive operations, data has historically been retained to recover from data loss situations or disaster management and to satisfy legal and regulatory requirements. Cloud storage has increasingly become the answer to challenges in enterprise scalability and security. Today’s enterprise data is sprawling out into the digital stratosphere, finding a home on public cloud infrastructure with managed service providers and within SaaS solutions. Asia Pacific is anticipated to grow at the fastest CAGR owing to increasing awareness between industries to protect and backup their vital enterprise data, mainly in BFSI, IT & Telecom, Retail, and Healthcare verticals boosts the market growth in this region. mvault’s product vision and leadership. Needless to say our continuous investment into our converged data management solution redefines what backup means for the progressive enterprise through solutions that protect, manage, and use their most critical asset – their data. Which verticals embraced your solutions maximum and why? The changing data landscape has put data at the core of every business. This data is getting bigger, more complicated, and more disparate every passing day. Today’s world of compliance, data breaches and disasters has put data protection on the business agenda, as organizations try to keep themselves “safe” and “compliant”. No industry verticals escape this changing data landscape. Our converged data management solution redefines what backup means for the progressive enterprise through solutions that protect, manage, and use their most critical asset - their data. We help companies worldwide manage, protect, activate and drive more value and business insights out of their data and to transform modern data environments. Point some of CIO Challenges in 2018 and your experience in mitigating them? Some CIOs face the challenge of modernizing

their infrastructure to simultaneously protect their data and enable the business with datadriven decisions. We recommend a fresh way of thinking with five keys to successful infrastructure modernization. First is to know what you have and consolidate – despite the fact that businesses have access to so many new technologies, knowing where that data is, and how it’s used can be considerably difficult and identifying business data, and its location, through one solidified solution is the first step. CIOs should use a flexible and agile data infrastructure. To avoid backpedalling, businesses must ensure that they deploy flexible and agile data infrastructures, rather than being locked into specific infrastructures or vendors. Organizations should simplify operations and automate everything. Increasingly, this is being achieved through the use of AI and machine learning embedded into software, easing the burden on IT admins and enabling them to focus on IT as part of their business strategy and development. Businesses need to scale out economically – in addition, businesses should be moving away from silos and toward more seamless, software-defined storage solutions and lastly as organizations move to consolidating their data, it’s important to have a clear and pragmatic path toward infrastructure modernization. Having consultants as partners during this process can make it a whole lot easier.

ENABLING SECURE CLOUD TRANSFORMATION FOR ENTERPRISES InstaSafe is advocating the cloud-first approach, and with deep focus on security as key value-add to business and customer success perspective.

compromises between security, cost and user experience.”

From an overall Cyber Security growth POV, how challenging was the year for global and India market? As we come to the end of 2018, this year globally can be summed up as a year of “More of everything”. 2018 witnessed public privacy concerns become mainstream, with the Facebook data privacy scandal splashed all across media. Europe GDPR compliance got enforced in May and numerous spectacular breaches occurred. 2018 reinforced that privacy and security are two sides of the same coin and the coming years will mark significant changes in our cybersecurity practices. On the other hand, today’s cybersecurity investments made by typical organizations can best be described as “cyber hygiene”. Hence both globally & India, the growth rate of products & solutions, that made customers lives easier had ample opportunity for growth & will continue to do so. How was InstaSafe performance for this calendar year? InstaSafe posted strong revenue as we continue to experience rapid growth in our business with total revenue growing YTD 250% over the previous year. We believe these results demonstrate InstaSafe’s increased adoption in the market-

place as organizations embark on their digital transformation journey embracing the cloud. This year also marked setting up of the InstaSafe’s US establishment. Which verticals embraced your solutions maximum and why? As innovation in payments rise, enabling users and consumers becomes primary for Financial Services & Fintech. Security plays a pivotal role and InstaSafe simple solutions assist customers to stay ahead of the curve in deployments, faster time to market with peace of mind. Other verticals include Retail, ITES, and Manufacturing. Can you share a successful recent customer story? I would like to highlight a few noteworthy wins here. A Startup Unicorn of India needed to securely connect different AWS & Azure regions and its data center into one easy-to-manage network that scales as new applications and cloud regions are added. They explored all choices & settled on InstaSafe, as with InstaSafe Secure Access, the end user does not need to know, where an application is hosted, nor does he have to worry about access issues. For the IT Admin, Granular policy-based access is used to connect only authenticated users to applications they are

entitled to access, allowing customers to keep their public cloud private. Point out some of CIO Challenges in 2018 and your experience in mitigating those challenges? Cloud transformation is breaking the traditional perimeter-based security appliance oriented approach. In the traditional architecture, organizations built the hub and spoke network to backhaul branch office traffic over dedicated wide area networks to the data center in order to apply security checks and access and ports. Then, they built a stack of security appliances that established a perimeter around the corporate network to secure the network. That’s why it is called network security. In the cloud world, where the perimeter has disappeared and the internet is becoming a corporate network, where would you deploy security appliances? Our cloud platform eliminates the need for traditional on-prem security appliances that are difficult to maintain and require compromises between security, cost and user experience. InstaSafe security cloud is a cloud first, multi-tenant platform deployed across public data centers globally that secure access for users and devices to applications and services, irrespective of their locations. FACING FORWARD: CYBER SECURITY IN 2019 AND BEYOND FireEye has released its 2019 cyber security predictions report, “Facing Forward: Cyber Security in 2019 and Beyond.” Experts predict threats to the aviation industry, continuing nation-state activity, rise in supply chain attacks and the widening cyber security skills gap in India.

T

his year’s report includes a top-down view of the cyber security industry by FireEye senior leaders, including CEO Kevin Mandia, in addition to research-based insights from experts from the FireEye iSIGHT Intelligence, Mandiant Consulting, and FireEye Labs teams. The IT and threat landscapes will continue to evolve in 2019, and this report is a look forward at what the cyber security industry needs to address and get right to stay ahead of the adversaries. “We expect 2019 to arrive with ample new and existing challenges for Indian enterprises, from misuse of the social media to security vulnerabilities in the cloud,” said Shrikant Shitole, senior director and country head for India at FireEye. While more Indian enterprises are recognizing the threat that cyber attacks can pose to their organization and bottom-line, many are not sure

about the extent to which they need to be covered. Shitole continued: “In 2019, we expect to see board level executives taking a significantly increased role in cyber risk management and threat hunting initiatives. We also hope Indian organizations will consider investing in enhancing their existing capabilities and accelerating the adoption of technology, intelligence and expertise necessary to move up in the cyber security maturity curve and go beyond SOC operations.” Top discussion points from the FireEye 2019 cyber security predictions report include –

expertise necessary to move up in the cyber security maturity curve and go beyond SOC operations.”

SUPPLY CHAIN AS A WEAKNESS In 2019, an increase in both state sponsored and financially motivated supply chain attacks is expected. As organizations have improved their posture and built up their perimeter defenses, attackers will shift their focus to compromising third party vendors, customers or partners with the goal of gaining access to a target’s network.

THE RISE IN BREACHES DUE TO LACK OF ATTRIBUTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY Attribution and accountability are two of the biggest sticking points when it comes to winning the war in cyberspace. Without risks and repercussions for malicious activity carried out on the internet, attackers will keep attacking and organizations will keep getting breached.

ATTACKERS EYEING THE CLOUD

THE WIDENING SKILLS GAP AND LACK OF TRAINED EXPERTS TO FILL SECURITY ROLES

Adversaries go where the money is, and 2019 promises to offer an increasing number of opportunities for attackers in the cloud. With cloud, there’s a new, and often expanding attack surface that can be left undefended or without the proper safeguards in place to protect important data.

According to various industry estimates, there are at least two million cyber security jobs that will go unfilled by the year 2020. However, the critical meltdown point has not quite been hit yet, when it comes to staffing. The good news is that the thinking around this challenge is changing. TARGETED AND PERSONALIZED CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

Businesses need to become trustworthy, transparent and prompt, and put customer experience at the centre of their strategies to help meet rising expectations. As a fall out, companies increasingly have to up their CRM game while building richer and better solutions.

CIOs were made to stand up to the test while documenting their actions This gave an opportunity for a lot of CIOs to take a hard look at their data, where they were storing it, and how they handled the information”

From an overall CRM growth POV, how was calendar year 2018 for global and India market? When it comes to the growth of the overall CRM industry, we are seeing a couple of key trends that are shaping the industry. There are several companies that are engaged in conventional CRM but are in reality contact centers providing point-solutions that help deal with customer enquiries. Another notable trend is the move to public cloud and the accelerating pace of digital transformation that we are witnessing across industries today. Companies are increasingly shifting from traditional ways of doing business to more modern platforms and processes. How was Zendesk’s performance for this calendar year, from a global as well as India perspective? Year on year, Zendesk is still maintaining approximately 40% growth, with India in our top 10 fastest growing countries. We are seeing growth in India as a result of the digital economy and the government’s exciting initiatives. A large percentage of the 1.3 Billion population is part of the digital economy and has greater access to the internet and mobile communications.

ADRIAN MCDERMOTT,

PRESIDENT OF PRODUCTS, ZENDESK

As a result, consumers are more willing to embrace technology in the new economy, and I think that is in turn helping drive business for Zendesk. We love to work with growing businesses, and India is a hotbed for incredible innovation. Interestingly, we not only work with new age companies in India, but are also with traditional businesses moving towards digital transformation. How was your customer acquisition growth? What were the customer engagement programs of the year and what was the outcome? We believe organic means of discovering customers is an incredibly important source of business and continues to drive our revenue. In fact, many companies are out there searching and trying to find better customer solutions and when they see other companies use our products it prompts them to sign up for Zendesk solutions. At the same time, there are several large companies who are looking for a high touch experience and want to be guided through the process in a more personalized manner. This is what we define as the enterprise segment which is typically larger businesses. One of the strategic directions we set out following our IPO in 2014,

was to develop the enterprise capabilities of Zendesk to support such larger organizations. Which are the verticals that have embraced your solutions maximum and why? The vertical that remains the fastest growing are the digital-native disruptive businesses. It could be a food delivery brand or a transportation brand or an accommodation brand, and these businesses all over the globe turn to Zendesk. Digital native disruptor-type business is where we got our start and these businesses are very dear to our heart. Point out some of CIO challenges in 2018 and your experience in mitigating them? Most CIOs today come face to face with an examination of their privacy policies with respect to data. In fact, the next big security breach is only a news report away, as the saying goes. I think it was visceral and real, and CIOs were given a hard deadline to deal with how to manage user data this year. CIOs were made to stand up to the test while documenting their actions. This gave an opportunity for a lot of CIOs to take a hard look at their data, where they were storing it, and how they handled the information. DECEMBER 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 65
