Reliance JIO, Cisco co-innovate for multi-access edge computing

Over past year, Reliance Jio’s Ciscopowered, all-IP network has grown significantly in size, and with new growth is further expected to see tremendous growth over the next several months. Cisco and Reliance Jio are now working together to leverage the power of multi-access edge computing, beginning with a use case to further optimize and enhance video experience over the network by developing a mobile content delivery network (CDN). With a mobile CDN, the mobile operator can deliver content via edge cloudlets to provide a better user experience with lower latency. For prototype, companies used a

combination of IP address management techniques based on mobile core, requiring tight integration between edge cache, mid-tier cache, and the traffic router in the Cisco Open Media Distribution system. Mobile core and the Open Media Distribution were combined into one system level solution for the CDN embedded in the mobile network. They also solved issue of assigning a geographically appropriate IP address to mobile device and issue of handover resiliency in face of IP address changes on client side and CDN cache site without change or disturbance to the current services.

The smart use of technologies such as artificial intelligence is expected to revolutionize the management of baggage over the next decade, promising to make mishandled bags an increasingly rare event for passengers globally. This is according SITA’s Intelligent Tracking: A Baggage Management Revolution paper. The paper notes that more than 4.5 billion bags are handled by industry baggage systems each year but airlines and airports will have to cope with twice that number with passenger numbers set to double over the next 20 years. Already, through improvements to technology and processes, the air transport industry has halved its annual mishandling cost over the past decade from US$4.22bn to US$2.1bn. However, every mishandled bag is one too many and the industry continues to seek ways to reduce the number further. The industry’s immediate focus is on implementing the International Air Transport Association’s Resolution 753. The resolution requires member airlines keep track of each bag and share that tracking information with all involved in delivering those bags back to passengers at their destination. While the resolution will deliver accurate data on the journey undertaken by each and every bag,.

“The boardrooms have become very positive over the years but CIOs need to maintain this confidence through continuous briefing on industry changes and changing customer expectations.”

WHERE DIGITAL IS LEADING THE WAY Digital technologies are making inroads into businesses big and small, and diverse. AI and Big Data are transforming critical aspects of business like customer experience, product development, skill-set recruitment, sales teams and marketing avenues. Automation, robotics and cognitive technologies are enabling even the lesser technically equipped organizations to maintain and meet high levels of efficiency and improve product qualities. A recent global CIO survey found out that enterprises are currently using digital technologies across a variety of areas with 70 percent using digital in core IT management, 60 percent for business process management and 62 percent using it for customer relationship management. The same survey also observed that top areas for organizational digitization plans in 2018 are knowledge management (33 percent), operational intelligence (31 percent) and product development (28 percent). Today digital technologies have influenced enterprise squares like business process integration, process automation, IT OPS, Infra Visibility, Data Insight, Cyber Security breach, Perfor16 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    MARCH 2018

mance, Payments, Digitization of Attendance & Maintenance Management System across Organization, user experience and customer front-end.

HOW CONFIDENCE AND INFLUENCE IN BOARDROOMS Disruptive digital technologies continue to equip CIOs to empower their enterprises to consume and analyze data to improve business, both by reimagining processes and experiences. 67 percent of organizations in a recent study are leveraging big data analytics across their organizations exploring new applications. Over half of these organizations have already made investments in deep learning algorithms of AI. In the same survey, 64 percent of respondents’ organizations used digital initiatives to improve existing business operations, 53 percent to solve new business problems, whereas just 33 percent implemented to create new opportunities. One marked change from the entire enterprise perspective in the recent years has been the growing realization and acknowledgement of the dire importance of going digital in enterprises. According to a recent Gartner report titled, the average IT budgets in India are expected to grow

end resulting in productivity enhancements and customer delight.”

10.7% in 2017. The main factor for this increase in budgets is the expectation of the boards from Indian CIOs to invest in digitization and the game-changing technologies to give them a decisive edge in the competitive playing field. The 2017 Gartner CIO Survey collated data from over 2500 CIO respondents in 93 countries and all major industries, representing approximately USD 9.4 trillion in revenue and public-sector budgets, and USD 292 billion in IT spending. A point to note is that this surge in the CIO budgets poses an extra challenge. Although IT leaders are expected to leverage digital technologies for business advantage, skills and resources still remain a huge challenge for 21% of CIOs. The Indian CIOs are fairly confident of success from their initiatives. They expected average revenue growth of 12.6%, much higher than the global average of 4% revenue rise cited by respondents globally. Today, digital accounts for 23% of the total IT budget in Indian IT organizations. Indian CIOs plan to accelerate their digital funding in 2018 to 35% of total IT budgets as technologies like RPA and Blockchain are explored. Digital has emerged as the top priority for Indian CIOs in 2018, with 37% listing digital plans utmost critical to the success of their role in the organization. With the government’s push and rapid digitization, India has emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and Indian CEOs are looking to their CIOs to deliver success through digital.

A global survey revealed that digital initiatives have shown an estimated over 16 percent increase in their organization’s global annual revenue in a number of cases. Some aspects where CIOs have been fairly confident of reaping benefits or digitization are business efficiency through productivity enhancements, enhancement of customer delight, infrastructure modernization, and automating business applications thereby reducing manual efforts and resulting in 75-80% better productivity and in some cases up to 100% improvement. The top objectives for Indian CIOs when it comes to identifying value from digital initiatives are aligning them with business efficiency and productivity; preparing a business and technology strategy roadmap plan for 5 years, increasing proactive competitiveness, achieving customer expectations and exploring opportunities to better ROI. Another key aspect when indentifying objectives with collaboration with the operations team as taking them into confidence is critical to making any digital plan successful.

CHALLENGES INVOLVED WITH DIGITIZATION But when it comes to reality of implementing digitization, Indian CIOs facing a number of challenges with shortage of the right skill set during their digital transformation journey being right up there. One in every four Indian CIOs feel they have suffer from an overall lack of skills and talent gap in areas like digital business and specific technical skills. Although boardrooms have fairly warmed up to CIOs and they are still far from understanding the place of Digital technologies in deciding the future of their business. and Enterprise Heads plan to use digital technology to optimize the current business, not for transformation. Most organizations today have very large digital projects underway, but have not changed the way the organization behaves. Not having digital at the core of business activities is another challenge for CIOs. Building a culture of digital and innovation across the organization and having enterprise wide betterment in IT skills is key. Another big challenge for Indian CIOs is balancing the aggressive drive to digitalization while ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place to support digital business. With legacy systems still in place and lack of knowledge among C-Suites like COOs and CFOs, getting their entire plans passed and put into action is tough for CIOs. A number of digital initiatives see delays and sacrifices from the technology point of view which is influenced by constraints such as budget margins and lower priority in total enterprise plans. Security, last but not the least is the constant worry for the CIOs who need to ensure that sufficient emphasis is placed on investment in security and risk management technologies in order to ensure the continued growth in digital ecosystems. The emergence of third platform and SMAC can be attributed to the increased security headache for CIOs and CISOs. Although BYOD, mobility and cloud have serious and undeniable gains to organizations, the increased vulnerabilities to malwares and breaches cannot be denied. Deploying in-house dedicated security and digital transformation teams is the norm for CIOs today in their bid to fast-track their enterprises’ fortunes through digital and at the same time prevent severe losses and fateful business threatening 18 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    MARCH 2018

cyberattacks.

ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS The role of technology partners is critical for CIOs today to achieve their business objectives. Technology vendors today are the digital transformation partners for CIOs. Enterprises generally do not have a lot of IT workforce and skill set trained in the latest technologies. CIOs suffer with the entire load of incubation, observation, planning and strategizing on their shoulders. Balancing the rush to digitalization and bimodal models with the need to create open platforms that enable new ecosystem partners to inter operate quickly is another task for CIOs. As per Gartner, 34 percent Indian CIOs believe that by collaborating with technology partners, organizations have the potential to implement new age digital initiatives without big IT teams. Top CIO priorities that critically depend on the support provided by their digital implementation partners besides playing a significant role in the planning and strategizing are on-time committed service delivery, security assurance and adding value by driving digitization as per the CIOs expectation. CIOs look for prompt and proactive response with ownership and commitment for IT vendors. With new age technology adoption like smart data analytics and on cloud solutions, vendors need to show more ownership with added business and security responsibilities. CIOs look to their technology partner to not just sell their own products but suggest better and competitive solutions to improve, cost effective approach to improve efficiency levels. They need to suggest

From the CIO point of view, digital transformation is about making technology the core of the business from the back office IT that runs businesses today. India is one of the fastest developing economies in the world, and runs well above the global average in terms of efficiency. Indian organizations witnessed revenue increase of 12 percent in comparison to global expected average of 4 percent in 2017. The business landscape is witnessing a merger with the technology landscape with the entry of local vendors in emerging, as well as mature, technology segments, including areas such as IoT robotic process automation offerings and machine-learningbased technologies. Technologies such as machine learning, IoT and smart frameworks are poised for vast transformations both across enterprises and consumers. The right approach for CIOs should be to keep your business interests and objectives thoroughly aligned throughout the project. They need to get the management involvement and persuade all business stakeholders for the digitization initiative and utilize their inputs working as a digitization enabler in organization. It is vital to take other critical aspects lik operations team, sales team and the likes in confidence to make any digital plan successful. They need to have able partners with the right skill set and infrastructure to help them find the right solutions, support PoCs and ensure timely implementation. Finally, the CIOs need to build a culture of innovation and encourage a more customer centric approach in all technology and business plans. From purely enterprise IT point of view, Indian firms are expected to increase their IT budgets by 10.7 percent, almost five times faster than the global average of 2.2 percent. Enterprise India ready for new technologies although lack of general IT and specialist digital skills will be big hurdles in gaining momentum with digitalization initiatives. Indian CIOs are well placed to gain from both emerging and maturing technologies but future success of digital initiatives will be determined by how well Indian CIOs deal with the pressures of such rapid business change and volatile technology landscape at the same time exploring the right new opportunities and maintaining competiveness by aggressively exploiting digital opportunities and converting them into value for business.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

RAVINDER ARORA,

HEAD – INFORMATION SECURITY, IRIS SOFTWARE

“Organizations that do not have such a program need to seriously think about beginning a security awareness program to strengthen its defense system and protect their information resources.”

SECURITY IS NOT A PRACTICE. IT’S A CULTURE!

Time has come for organizations to elevate the level of information security education and knowledge within their organizations, and gear up for the growing cybersecurity challenge and threat landscape by establishing and maintaining a strong security program.

A

n organization’s security culture requires care and feeding. It is not something that grows in a positive way organically. You must invest in a security culture. A sustainable security culture is bigger than just a single event. When a security culture is sustainable, it transforms security from a one-time event into a lifecycle that generates security returns forever. Why does an organization need a security culture? The primary answer is something that deep down we all know. In any system, humans are always the weakest link. Security culture is primarily for humans, rather than computers. The computers do exactly what we tell them to do. With use of technology and widespread connectedness to the environment, organizations increasingly have become exposed to numerous

and varied threats. Outsourcing and off-shoring bring new partners into an extended enterprise, with different technologies, cultures, and sensitivities to information management. Contracting, telecommuting, and mobile workers all contribute to new security risks. Now time has come that organizations should elevate the level of information security education and knowledge within their organizations. A growing challenge is establishing and maintaining a strong security program. Organizations that do not have such a program need to seriously think about beginning a security awareness program to strengthen its defense system and protect their information resources. Technology alone is not a comprehensive solution. Management Commitment: Involving top management and getting their support is essential in building a strong security awareness program.

Dealing with Globalization: Even in organizations in which the security group has implemented a strong core program, it’s still challenging to get business units worldwide to take ownership of security risks. Complying with Law and Standards: Many organizations find it challenging to stay in compliance with various government laws and regulations, such as HIPAA, as well as industry standards, including the PCI-DSS. Security awareness training: needs a foundation of policies. More important part is that the organization has the right people to implement security successfully. Information security team has to conduct information security trainings to all employees and these trainings should be are mandatory for all employees including top management. By implementing some of these changes, organizations can increase coverage of components found in more formalized security awareness programs, achieve higher levels of security awareness maturity, and benefit from a stronger security culture. We can protect the company’s and customers’ information assets, business operations and intellectual property, from a wide range of threats organizations can minimize business damage and ensure business continuity in the event of disasters and reduce chances of business interruptions as well as reduce business risks. All employees have to understand that information security is everyone’s responsibility. Any information security leak could lead to serious reputation loss for organizations. Thus, Security is not a practice, it’s a culture! MARCH 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD

the launch, and said, “I’m happy that CtrlS latest datacenter is being situated in Bengaluru. Our city, which is already the leader in software services is also fast becoming a hub for global organizations and I’m sure the CtrlS datacenter will be the start of an ecosystem.” As internet use expands across the country, and as more and more users adopt to mobile internet and content creation, the requirements for an “always-on” datacenter is even more keenly felt. Organizations such as Google, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media providers will need to ensure 0% downtime for their services. Similarly, with growing e-commerce and online payments for products and services, including mobile apps and websites, a reliable, robust infrastructure ecosystem is desired combined with highest uptime SLA and robust security. Further, the new Bangalore Datacenter is the First LEED Platinum datacenter in the world certified by USGBC (under LEED v4 O+M). This green building generates its power requirement using solar and other sustainable sources. Additionally, two major power lines mean that CtrlS will never experience a power outage at any point. The Bengaluru DC is an earthquake-proof build-

ing, with over 9 levels of security (Military Grade Security). Sridhar Pinnapureddy, Chairman and Managing Director of CtrlS, commented on the greencertification of CtrlS, and said “Our Datacenter has been awarded a Platinum LEED certificate by the US Green Building Council, making it the only Datacenter in the world to receive such certification. The future plan is convert all our DCs to be solar powered in the next 5 years”. Solar powered DCs are sustainable and the long term competitiveness is much better. An investment of Rs 1,200 crore has been earmarked for setting up new datacenters, investment in R&D and upgrading infrastructure across the companies’ five data centers. This makes CtrlS datacenters the obvious choice for Global and India’s banking, internet, large conglomerates and SAP does concur with this thought process – In fact, SAP, World’s leading business enterprise software maker has selected CtrlS to house business critical data at the new

While a regular Tier3 Datacenter usually faces about 4 hours of downtime in any calendar year, a Tier4 Datacenter has advanced infrastructure and design features that reduce downtime to less than 30 minutes in any given year. But CtrlS’s Tier4 datacenters spread across Hyderabad, Mumbai and Noida have established industry records - Over the last 10 years, CtrlS datacenters have experienced no downtime whatsoever and have maintained 100% uptime. CtrlS, with its robust network ecosystem, internet connectivity, and own infrastructure including dark-fibre assets, peering, and private internet exchange, provides exactly that. What is the mantra behind the continued success and growing global popularity of CES? CES is the world’s largest and most influential technology event. Every major tech company is at CES and the show is where business gets done.

CES saves executives an estimated 5.4 billion kilometers of business travel each year and the average attendee conducts 33 meetings on-site. If you’re a part of the global tech ecosystem, CES is the most efficient way make new connections, close deals and grow your business. Technology touches every major industry, and CES evolves as the definition of technology expands. This year at CES, we saw the latest advances in voice and speech recognition integrated across marketplaces, including smart speakers embedded in cars.

CES //  INTERVIEW

CES 2018 featured the latest in smart city and smart community technology, including AI, 5G connectivity and self-driving technology. These ingredient technologies are the building blocks for sustainable, livable world cities. Across every continent, technology is changing our lives for the better. At CES we get a glimpse into what the future holds. What were the highlights of the show this year? Which was your personal favorite innovation on display? Every major industry is represented at CES so it is hard to pick one favorite product. But I always love checking out Eureka Park – the area of the show floor dedicated to startups. This year we had over 900 exhibitors in Eureka Park from more than three dozen countries. This is a must-see

for anyone looking to see the latest innovations coming to market. It is always a delight to witness the energy of these early-stage innovators. Which one emerging technology do you believe will have the greatest impact on our lives in the future? 5G connectivity is a catalyst of growth, binding together our physical and digital worlds. Future products and services powered by 5G will redefine the way we live and work, with major implications across transportation, healthcare, logistics and so much more. In the future, networks powered by 5G will be 100 times faster and five times more responsive than today’s infrastructure. By delivering lower latency and greater capacity, 5G will help us realize the full benefits of IoT.

What is your vision for future CES events? CES is home to innovators debuting disruptive technology. The first CES in 1967 featured pocket radios and TVs with integrated circuits. Since then, the show has grown into the world’s largest innovation event, with thousands of companies and more than 175,000 attendees. Technology is constantly evolving. In the years to come, I am confident that connectivity will fuel advancements across product categories including drones, augmented and virtual reality, and robotics. Innovators, disruptors and entrepreneurs will drive technology expansion into new markets and product categories that we can’t even imagine. I am excited for the future of technology at CES and the potential it has to improve our lives and our world. MARCH 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 25

ROLTA //  INTERVIEW

What have been some of the highlights of your journey enabling IT transformations at Rolta? When I joined Rolta back in 2013, it was a 33 year old IT company working on a legacy IT setup. The immediate business need was transformation to an efficient, highly available, redundant, highly secure, and scalable IT Infrastructure. I headed Digital innovation and Transformation journey 4.0 (Accelerate, Innovate & Transform),signaling a paradigm shift in Rolta IT by firstly improving end user computing Infrastructure through the replacement of legacy end user computing environment with the latest, high end optimized computing environment with the latest OS. This also included setting up a 100% Virtual Datacenter and the Rolta Private Cloud, as well as a World class UCS (Unified Communication System) infrastructure involving integration of real-time communication services such as Data, VOIP, Video Conferencing and Instant Messaging seamlessly across the Rolta IT Infrastructure globally. Other highlights include ISO 27001:2013 compliance and certification journey along with a successful SSAE16 (Type I and Type II) attestation which is considered as a growth driver for Remote Infrastructure managed services for our global customer base and the setup of a highly efficient, 24x7x365 IT helpdesk with consistent SLA above 99.983%. As the person responsible for formulating and implementing IT Strategy and Business roadmap, I developed high value, top line revenue enabled solutions (End-to-End Solutions – Plan, Build, Manage & Innovate) delivering Infrastructure leveraging innovative Rolta IP solutions. The project included creation of solutions like RoltaSmartCloud™ for comprehensive Cloud transformation, Cloud security and Cloud management of Private and Hybrid Cloud, Rolta SmartSecure™for Enterprise Security, Enterprise Applications Solutions Framework which includes both Package and Custom Solutions, Rolta Smart Citizen Platform IP Framework which helps the government in its Digital Revolution and Smart Governance project. I also had the privilege of initiate the information security transformation journey at Rolta creating an innovative Enterprise Security Solution framework combining advisory and implementation of Information security process compliance framework. We created an IP – Rolta Security Advizer Insight which

gives us a well-defined approach when catering to a customer organization’s security needs during the initial discovery and data definition phase (Due Diligence phase). The tool provides knowledge based planning solution for strategy and transformation roadmap of IT Security. We also launched a new Enterprise Security Solution offering Rolta SmartSecure in the space of Smart City, Smart Security and Smart governance. These solutions gave the impetus to our Sales /pre Sales teams resulting in increased multi-million dollar revenue opportunities for the company both in India and outside in the space of Smart Governance & Smart City. This new line of business is now one of the best-selling services for Rolta for our IT Infrastructure and Enterprise Application transformation solutions. The result has been over INR 350 Crore worth of orders in the last one year and a projected pipeline of INR 500 Crore plus opportunities. I am also responsible for providing remote Infra Managed Services to more than 300+ customers across the globe which brings multimillion dollar top line business for the company. Tell us about your technology partnership with CtrlS Datacenter? Spearheading Digital Transformation from the current state of legacy infrastructure, we at Rolta were seeking a technology partner who could not only provide us with the right platform but also back the strategic business needs of Rolta with value added and innovative service portfolio. I observed CtrlS Datacenters, with their Tier4 facilities to have the best in class infrastructure capabilities with the right credentials in redundancy, scalability, Disaster Recovery and service excellence to cater to our needs at Rolta. Their excellent uptime and IaaS capabilities helped us design and support our nextgeneration solutions in Smart City, security and smart governance such as RoltaSmartCloud and SmartSecure. In my experience, CtrlS has been a very customer-centric organization and add value to their customer’s landscape with capabilities like their comprehensive IT security landscape, 99.995% uptime guarantee and the best SLA response time. What are your plans for 2018? What is your expectation from CtrlS as a technology partner for these

projects? We will continue setting up high revenueenabled infrastructure services through the creation of innovative IPs in the space of Cloud, Security, Big Data, Mobility, and Infrastructure services which would serve as unique value differentiators among our competitors in Smart City, Smart Governance, and Smart Security space. The Digital transformational journey at Rolta has not only provided immense value internally through improved productivity, reduced cost and increased customer satisfaction but also helped improve market share through creation of top line revenue enabled solutions for customers which has resulted in projects worth more than 350 Crore and an internal team of more than 300 professionals. The creation of these solutions has opened several revenue opportunities in the space of Smart City domestically in India as well as globally. CtrlS has been a visionary technology partner for us and with their help we will continue to provide innovative Smart governance and Smart Security solutions as well as remote infrastructure managed services for our global customer base. We believe what differentiates us from our competitors are our value-driven IPs. We will continue to provide solutions with ready-made and customized IPs enabling accelerated delivery and better value to our customers in terms of cost and implementation journey. With your vast experience in the IT Industry, what are your suggestions to fellow CIOs in terms of enabling change through IT in their organizations? In my 25 years of experience heading IT strategies for business with global presence, I have witnessed the Enterprise IT landscape going through a number of transformations as new technologies and frameworks replace ones that gradually grow old and redundant. Today, IT has turned into Digital and is now much more than just a facilitator for business. IT has become the key differentiator in markets and CIOs have become key business enablers as well as drivers with the rest of the boardroom looking up to them for creating the competitive advantage in a highly technology-enabled world. IT evolves fast and being innovative is vital for any CIO in order to keep up with the fast evolving competition. MARCH 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 29

Integration of information and communications technology (ICT) in business has evolved the relationships within organizations and those between and among organizations and individuals. The controversial current social and economic trends are globalization and the widespread adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Many argue

that these two trends are closely associated, each driving the other forward, and both being driven by other common forces, such as trade liberalization, deregulation, migration, and the expansion of capitalism and democracy. This argues that the twin forces of globalization and the ICT revolution are combining to create the so-called New Economy, marked by higher rates of economic and productivity growth. “Technology is both driven by and a driver of globalization, as both forces continually reinforce one another” cited by the use of ICT for ecommerce in business has enhanced productivity, encouraged greater customer participation, and enabled mass customization, besides reducing costs. Prior to development in internet and web-based technologies, distinctions between traditional markets and global electronic marketplaces such as business capital size, among others-are gradually being narrowed down. Together with the appropriate strategy and policy approach with e-commerce enables small and medium scale enterprises to compete with large capital-rich businesses. On another plane, developing countries are given increased access to the global marketplace, where they compete with and complement of the more developed economies. Most of the developing countries are already participating in e-commerce, either as sellers or buyers. However, to facilitate e-commerce growth in these countries based on globalization phenomenal, the relatively under-developed information infrastructure must be improved. Significantly, economic trend of the past decade is the growing use of the Internet for conducting business.

SECURITY INSIGHT

NIVEDITA MALHOTRA, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR – IT SECURITY, DATA PRIVACY AND BCP, COGNITIVE PROCESS SERVICES, IBM

“Building and maintaining an IT inventory is thus a critical task and has direct impact on the security of an organization. If we do not know “what” we have in

our company, how are we going to protect it?”

A KEY BUILDING BLOCK OF IT SECURITY Organizations spend millions on securing theirITinfrastructurewiththelatest technology like intrusion protection systems, data leakage protection, antimalware tools, firewalls etc. but more often than not a seemingly innocuous item is ignored which ends up compromising the entire security of the organization.

T

his often ignored thing is the “Technical Inventory” in a company which includes a listing of all the servers, network devices, applications, desktops and peripheral devices (printers, scanners etc). To create and maintain an accurate inventory is a veritable challenge especially if there is no automation or tool to manage it. Most organizations do not invest enough in a good inventory management system and rely on basic systems to maintain a count of their IT infrastructure. There are many pitfalls in this approach – l It’s difficult to link a basic inventory system with the IT onboarding /offboarding process and hence there is no way for new IT systems to get automatically updated in the inventory once they are introduced or removed from the environment l Such systems need a lot of manual intervention and thus are prone to human errors. 32 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    MARCH 2018

l There is no inbuilt work flow in the basic tools so change management process cannot be integrated with the IT onboarding process. This is important to ensure that the devices have the latest approved configurations installed on them. It is important to understand that building and maintaining an IT inventory is thus a critical task and has direct impact on the security of an organization. If we do not know “what” we have in our company, how are we going to protect it? Investment in an automated Inventory management system is worth the expense as it is truly a building block of good security. Even after having this in place there are some tips that security teams can follow to make sure that their inventory is in good shape. 1. Use a tool to scan the network to detect IT devices like servers, routers, firewalls, printers etc. This automated method of detecting devices has some risks and performing this exercise

needs technical expertise as well as appropriate approvals. 2. Check the consoles of the Antivirus servers, Patching servers and other such centralized management consoles and do a cross matching with the IT inventory to validate that all servers are included everywhere for example the servers in the listing should figure in the AV and Patch consoles. This technique works well in my experience. 3. In smaller IT setups a physical verification of infrastructure may work well and can be used to validate the IT inventory but as the number of systems increase this process becomes time consuming and is fraught with errors. 4. Another way in which an organization can exercise control over their IT inventory is to strengthen their change management process to ensure that all commissioning and decommissioning of IT infrastructure is performed as an outcome of approved changes only. Mature organizations also utilize their inventory management system to include other relevant information such as if a system or application contains PI/SPI information or the network zone in which a system is hosted (internet facing, DMZ etc). This data helps in implementing appropriate data protection measures on a particular system. To recap I cannot stress enough on the importance of the IT inventory in any organization – If you don’t know what you have, how on earth will you manage and protect it?

DATA DIRECTION

DIRECTOR AND GM, DATA PROTECTION SOLUTIONS, DELL EMC INDIA

“CIOs and CISOs must look for more holistic, security-bydesign solutions. They must also have a disaster recovery plan in place to ensure that the business can survive cyber-attacks and data loss.”

EVOLVING DATA PROTECTION NEEDS OF ENTERPRISES Increasingly organizations are realizing the importance of have standard practices for not only protecting their assets, but also data recovery. Very soon, businesses will ensure protection of data from edge to core to cloud ensuring seamless control over data and preparedness for any kind of breaches.

D

igital has become intrinsic to business growth and data has become the core of everything an enterprise does. In light of this, businesses are now realizing the growing importance of security. However the question that still remains unanswered is, how prepared are they to combat data breaches? How robust is their data protection? It has become essential for businesses to re-look at their data protection applications and to build innovative new applications that generate rich insights into business, industry and customers which will enable you to make informed decisions and quickly take decisive action as well as to protect this data against any breach. The Data Protection market is forecasted to reach a whopping $119.95 billion by 2022 from $57.22 billion in 2017. The data protection needs

of enterprises are constantly evolving and it is very crucial for Indian organizations to focus not only on data protection but also data recovery. In the wake of the Supreme Court ruling privacy to be a fundamental right, there is a pressing demand for India to write laws on data protection and privacy. India witnessed disruptions from cyberattacks through a ransomware, WannaCry. These attacks and breaches threaten to trigger heavy damages, including loss of data and disruptions in business. They could also involve regulatory compensation. So, policy, rules and practices must address cybersecurity and data breaches. However, the dynamics of data are changing from devices to datacenters to cloud operating environment. As data becomes larger and complex in the virtual environment, how fast and efficient is your data protection infrastructure? What new elements are being used to make it as

efficient as possible? Increasingly organizations are realizing the need to have standard practices for not only protecting their assets, but also the importance of data recovery. Hence, very soon, businesses will ensure protection of data from edge to core to cloud. This will help organizations to have seamless control over their data and be prepared for any kind of data breaches. Businesses can also leverage advanced data protection solutions and separate copies of their data from the network. To stay protected from threats like hacking and accidental data loss, it becomes essential to create protection copies. Sometimes, those protection copies are at risk too as hackers may take them down as well. CIOs and CISOs must look for more holistic, security-by-design solutions. They must also have a disaster recovery plan in place to ensure that the business can survive cyber-attacks and data loss. Businesses need to understand that the only way they can secure data is by implementing the right data protection and data recovery solutions, against any kind of traditional as well as emerging threats. Indian organizations have greatly benefitted from data protection as these are usually mid-size businesses which are affected the most due to cyber-attacks. Now with measures being taken to ensure protection of data, these businesses can sustain itself in the long run without the risk of being compromised. MARCH 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 33

COUNTRY MANAGER, WINMAGIC

“Businesses can change for the better when they realize that the cybersecurity of any one organization within the chain is only as strong

as that of the weakest member.”

SECURING THE DIGITAL SUPPLY CHAIN

The continued ascendancy of supply chain risks has led to the evolution of new risk management approaches, which focus on existing cybersecurity and supply chain practices for building an effective digital supply-chain.

E

nsuring a secure supply chain is a necessary precondition in today’s world of commerce. The digital supply chain has emerged as the weakest link for the potential insertion of malware backdoors. Governments and industry are just getting around to addressing the various concerns relating to supply-chain security. When it comes to data security challenges, human and technological influences can be amongst the most difficult to manage, seriously exacerbating cyber risk to IT-enabled supply chain management (SCM). It is quite common to find SCM software running on top of business software, exposing organizations to myriad risks and attacks. In fact, digital supply chain risks keep evolving with technological advancements and there is no end in sight for a definitive solution to address them. Merely determining the authentic34 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    MARCH 2018

ity of various hardware, firmware and software components does not guarantee a secure system. In fact, 80% of data breaches begin here. It is common knowledge that most of the companies do not have full visibility into their supply chain. In fact, the potential risk exposure of a company increases with the number of unmanaged suppliers. It is quite normal for even a midsized firm to be part of a complex web of global inter-dependencies that are driving synchronized commerce today. Technological disruption has made the digital supply chain the prime source of risks, although there are several other ways that an organization could suffer a compromise leading to information theft or a service outage. With organizations relying on software and services from third-party providers, the risk of exposure to cybercrime gets only higher and supply chain disruptions are becoming costlier. It is estimated that 80 percent of all

information breaches originate in the supply chain, with manufacturers facing the brunt of all attacks—mostly from unplanned IT or communication outage, followed by cyberattacks and data breaches. The digital supply chain is also the favored arena for malicious actors to plant malware, to devastating effect. Remember what happened when several Chrome extensions were compromised? It resulted in hijacking of traffic and exposing users to potentially malicious pop ups and credential theft. Risks exist at every stage Cyber supply chain risks may originate at the suppliers’ end (inclusion of unwanted functionality, data or network breaches, insider threats); at the place of business operation (data theft or alteration of data, insertion of malicious software and hardware, outages, etc.); or at the distribution end (theft, tampering, counterfeiting, etc.). Many functions, departments and roles in an organization own the risks affecting supply chain security. Risk blind spots in the supply chain occur only when little or no communication or cooperation takes place—both inside and outside of an organization. It is, therefore, important to formulate a strategy for end-to-end risk management in supply chain, ensuring its integrity, security, and resilience. A successful strategy should outline ways to secure the organization and its dependencies. The continued ascendancy of supply chain risks has led to the evolution of new risk management approaches, which focus on existing cybersecurity and supply chain practices for building effective digital supply-chain. By identifying vulnerable systems, businesses can formulate risk mitigation measures that are cost-effective and efficient.

“Government data centers are evolving to take advantage of virtualization with the goal to capture the associated benefits of higher data center efficiency and optimization, as well as reduced capital and operational expenses.”

CLOUD POWERING INDIA’S PRIORITY OF ‘DIGITAL-FIRST COUNTRY’ Government IT departments are prioritizing investments in data center consolidation and new technologies to enable higher IT service levels with three trends virtualization and cloud, IaaS and flexible infrastructure for application development and delivery impacting government IT.

D

igital transformation has been recognized as being vital to the growth of our nation. This transformation has enjoyed the unanimous approval and contribution from all stake holders including enterprises, MSMEs, government bodies and citizens. But this level of adoption in a country with a population of over a billion people would need a robust technology base that is capable to collecting and distributing vital data seamlessly. Digital India envisions creating high speed digital highways that will impact commerce and create a digital footprint for every individual. Technologies based on mobility, analytics, Internet of things and most importantly, cloud technologies are the building blocks for the digital India mission. There is a growing need to manage

huge volumes of data, and making them readily available to public through digital cloud services. Cloud has a pivotal role in enabling this change. While Data centers have become crucial to this transformation, IT leaders increasingly recognize that current data centers have reached their limits for supporting how state and local governments need to work and provide services. The data center model is also evolving to support private cloud and IT as a service to accomplish IT projects faster and more effectively. Virtualization enables a hyper-converged infrastructure that integrates servers and storage in a single appliance. The systems leverage industry-standard hardware and software defined storage, enabling easy scalability and management. A well-designed hyper-convergence infrastructure in the data center offers several additional advantages for IT operations and service delivery like cost reduc-

tions for infrastructure, software licenses, cabling and other elements, with predictable budgeting for data center growth; easier, on-demand and linear scalability of compute and storage resources, which reduces the need to overprovision resources in anticipation of potential performance demands, flexibility to support new IT offerings, such as analytics, that help government employees improve services to constituents and simpler management with fewer server and storage silos. One key to agility — in both government and IT — is having the right resources ready to go at a moment’s notice, but to use them only when they are truly needed. That agility is behind the idea of IaaS on hyper-converged infrastructure: delivering computing, storage and network resources on demand to application developers and users. This environment operates like a private cloud, where the IT infrastructure can serve more applications and users without the need to add more staff. By creating a private internal cloud, IT managers also can reduce concerns that come with using un-trusted or shared cloud services, including security, compliance and audit trails. An agile government is one that has the information, applications and computing capabilities that keep pace with the fast-paced changes in citizen and employee expectations for services. By considering the data center trends discussed, IT can make the infrastructure simpler while also delivering services that make government better. Cloud has demonstrated the capability to digitize the governance system while proving to be cost efficient. The global world is eager to see India embrace the Cloud Computing frontier led by technology capabilities to improve people’s lives. MARCH 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 35

“Blockchain could open up newer models of ownerships like shared ownership helping first time buyers to purchase only part

of property and proportionately earn rental incomes on the same.”

BLOCKCHAIN SIGNALS PARADIGM SHIFT IN REAL ESTATE AND CONSTRUCTION While the legality of cryptocurrencies is still being debated in India, companies have begun shifting focus to the utility of Blockchain technology reckoning that Blockchain could have a large and lasting impact on the way real estate gets done, but it requires big changes, not just minor tweaks.

W

hile the influence of technology has permeated every industry and sector conceivable, whether it’s Banking, Manufacturing or Healthcare, the role technology is playing in shaping the real estate & construction industry is of transformational nature. Of particular interest is the role new gen technologies like Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), Machine learning, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics are playing in shaping the industry. And among them Blockchain related technologies seems to be most talked about and most misconstrued as well. Industry pundits, across the globe, seem to reckon that Blockchain could have a large and lasting impact on the way real estate

gets done, but it requires big changes, not just minor tweaks. Estimates peg the global market for Blockchain at $708 million in 2017, anticipating it to reach anywhere close to $60.7 billion in 2024. Hence the impact this technology is poised to play in the near future cannot be undermined. However, before we delve any further on how Blockchain is set to impact the industry, we need to understand the underlying technology. At the core of it, Blockchain is a digital ledger containing digital record of transactions, maintained by a network of computers. This means information of a financial or non-financial transaction is shared with a decentralized network and validated by the entire network. According to an industry report, 56% of Indian businesses are inclined to make

Blockchain a part of their core business. In the construction industry, which requires bringing together large teams to design and shape the built environment the potential uses of this technology can be a real differentiator. With technology and in particular Building Information Modeling (BIM) becoming more widespread, openness to collaboration and new ideas is increasing across the industry. This momentum could be leveraged to bring the use of Blockchain technology to the fore. The potential uses of Blockchain, among many could be: Recording Value Exchange; Administering Smart Contracts; Combining Smart Contracts to form a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO); and finally certifying proof of existence for certain data. Hence, through this technology there is an opportunity to create a leaner procurement method which better engages the individuals who make up a project team. Blockchain integration constantly records and shares information to address traditional process inefficiencies in the commercial real estate industry. While there are more advantages to it, there are few hurdles that the industry collectively needs to address before capitalizing on the benefits of Blockchain. The adoption of Blockchain in real estate would require legislative changes, standardization and education around Blockchain concepts so that every stakeholder understands the various stages of the transaction.
