IT Leaders struggle with HCI security; but confident it can transform ‘Flexibility’

B Y S A N J AY @ A C C E N T I N FO M E D I A . C O M

New research from WinMagic, the data security company, surveying over 1,000 IT Decision Makers (ITDM) about Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) has revealed flexibility (65%) performance (58%) and availability (46%) as the highest ranked benefits of the technology. However, the survey also highlighted ITDM concerns around expanding their use of HCI, with complexity leading at 45% and security a close second (43%). Currently, only 15% of respondents’ report having any HCI technology in their infrastructure. Yet the HCI market is expected to expand, with Gartner stating that “By 2021, HCIS will represent 54% of total converged infrastructure shipments by revenue, with HCIS reaching $10.8 billion.” 6

ENTERPRISE IT WORLD  APRIL 2018

ITDMs are clearly seeing the benefits of HCI technology, so what is holding them back from using it more? Simplicity can make some things harder. Deployed with the correct controls HCI can be one of the best ways to simplify data center infrastructure. However, its dynamic nature and reliance on virtual machines, creates challenges such as how to unify security and control data sprawl as IT departments struggle to maintain control as workloads expand. A quarter (27%) of respondents admitted to not limiting access to the control planes of their HyperConverged Infrastructure. Rather than encrypting individual workloads, many are simply encrypting the whole platform, ignoring the need for encryption and access controls to certain sensitive datasets.

SAMEH YAMANY,

CTO, VIAVI SOLUTIONS

“We are nearing the point of no return, when manual operations will be unable to scale sufficiently to keep up with dynamic traffic patterns. The only way forward is to increase network automation and programmability in 2018 and beyond.”

Tata Communications is working with Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) to deploy 5,000 smart gas meters in Mumbai. The new smart meters will give households and businesses unprecedented visibility and control over their gas usage, and enable MGL to enhance operational efficiencies. As the global smart gas meter market is set to grow from around USD 1.59 billion in 2016 to USD 2.27 billion by 2021, it is expected that there will be around 130 million smart meters across India in the next three years. MGL’s new smart meters will be equipped with reliable, secure connectivity provided by Tata Communications’ public Internet of Things (IoT) network. This infrastructure is based on an ultra-low-power, long-range LoRaWANTM network, which enables MGL to simultaneously monitor thousands of smart meters. It means that its customers won’t have to manually check their gas meter readings – instead the smart system will automatically track their gas usage. “Our recent India-wide research found

that the home is where people expect IoT to make a big difference, with over 90% of people surveyed saying that they would like to use IoT to monitor their home appliances remotely in real-time, for example,” said VS Shridhar, Senior Vice President and Head for Internet of Things, Tata Communications. “Smart metering is one of many IoT-enabled applications that could transform how people live and engage with the world around them, and how businesses operate and engage with their customers. We look forward to working with MGL and other innovative utility companies, as they harness the power of IoT to improve the way they serve their customers and manage all aspects of their operations.” Tata Communications is building the foundation for IoT in India with the world’s largest IoT network, spanning nearly 2,000 communities and touching over 400 million people in total. To-date, the company has rolled out the LoRaWAN network in 38 cities, with more cities planned for implementation over the next two years.

About The Book (IoT)-based attacks are already a reality. A recent CEB, now Gartner, survey found that nearly 20 percent of organizations observed at least one IoT-based attack in the past three years. To protect against those threats Gartner, Inc. forecasts that worldwide spending on IoT security will reach $1.5 billion in 2018, a 28 percent increase from 2017 spending of $1.2 billion. “In IoT initiatives, organizations often don’t have control over the

source and nature of the software and hardware being utilized by smart connected devices,” said Ruggero Contu, research director at Gartner. “We expect to see demand for tools and services aimed at improving discovery and asset management, software and hardware security assessment, and penetration testing. In addition, organizations will look to increase their understanding of the implications of externalizing network connectivity.

security and derive other benefits that a cloud ecosystem has to offer. A Community cloud solves this major challenge of a Banking CIO. Cloud4C – a sister organization of CtrlS Datacenters has designed a Banking Community Cloud to tackle the core challenges faced by the Banking Industry from the IT standpoint, giving them complete control with reduced complexities, bullet proof security, increased uptime and lighting fast time to market. At the same time, a 40 percent decrease in pricing makes it an absolute no-brainer for any Banking CIO looking to make a difference in today’s competitive landscape.

THE CHALLENGES OF BANKING SYSTEM TODAY The Indian Banking System has a history of struggling to cater to the ever increasing customer base, changing industry guidelines. This results is a constant struggle for BFSI organizations when maintaining business continuity when upgrading to newer technologies, bringing in new applications or opening up new branches. Banking CIOs constantly face issues arising out of technology that becomes obsolete as quickly as it comes to the market. This brings up challenges around reinvestment of costs time and again, regulatory needs and compliance complexities, and the ever increasing security needs.

SPECIAL FEATURE

All these challenges coupled together give CIOs a tough time in maintaining business continuity and aligning the organizational goals and targets to the transforming technology and competitive market landscape. Over time, banking IT infrastructures has become extremely complex and even the biggest names in the Indian BFSI sector cannot remain unaffected by the challenges in addressing industry specific needs in a timely and cost effective manner.

HOW THE COMMUNITY CLOUD EMPOWERS BANKING CIOS The Cloud4C Banking Community Cloud which they aptly nickname as the ‘Bank-in-a-Box Solution’ boasts unprecedented credentials as being the World’s 1st Tier-4 Banking Community Cloud, that delivers a reliable, on-demand self-service with rapid elasticity and measured services. In simple words, the Banking Community Cloud enables Banks to optimize costs whilst maintaining desired levels of security, compliance management and efficiencies. Cloud4C and CtrlS Founder, Sridhar Pinap-

pureddy explains, “This unique next generation “Bank in a Box” service with enhanced functionality is specifically tailored to meet the burgeoning digital needs of the financial industry with strong underlying IT Governance to ensure effective and efficient usage of banking information technology infrastructure.” Traditionally, a Bank requires around 25 diverse applications for processes and offerings including ATMs, Credit and Debit Cards, Mobile Apps etc. to serve their business needs, apart from the core banking and regular business apps like CRM and HR. The emphasis on security is vital for the Banking vertical which deals with the most important assets of their customers like their life savings and investments that ensure a better future in today’s economic scenario. In order to ensure bullet proof protection for these IT applications from disasters like data loss and security breaches, banks usually require more than 40 controls using over 20+ security tools – all of them have been incorporated into Cloud4C banking community cloud. The biggest headache that Banking CIOs face when ensuring an up to date security framework is deploying and management of these diverse applications which traditionally requires engagement of a large number of technology partners and service providers, along with an adequately skilled in-house team to manage them – again here, Cloud4C helps them by managing the overall infrastructure backed by managed services to ensure the Banking CIOs focus on their core business and engage their mind on strategy and transformation, leaving the mundane activities to

Cloud4C and its team of cloud experts. The Cloud4C Banking Community Cloud empowers the Banking CIOs by substantially reducing this complexity by providing all the required applications on their banking community cloud, managing their infrastructure and applications with a single SLA. The Banking Community Cloud offerings include the entire array of functionalities needed by the CIO of a large National Bank right from test & dev, application administration, complete security, accent management, among others, giving the customer a conclusive deal with market benefits in cost savings and uptime. Perhaps the biggest benefit for Banking CIOs deploying the Banking Cloud is the unbelievably efficient time to market. Banks even with the most efficient of CIOs traditionally take at least 8 to 9 months when launching a new branch from an IT standpoint. With the Cloud4C Banking Community Cloud, CIOs have been successful in launching completely IT ready Bank branches in as less as 3 weeks.

THE CTRLS PROMISE: FASTER, BETTER AND MORE SECURE Coupled with the substantial reduction in time to market and better control over applications, Cloud4C promises a 40 percent decrease in pricing and which has made the Cloud4C Banking Community Cloud has come across as a no brainer for a number of Banking CIOs in the country. The biggest USP of the Cloud4C Community Cloud offering is the specific customizations that render it apt for the customer’s specific needs. Sridhar estimates that currently the community cloud easily brings up savings by 30 to 40 percent and improved uptime in applications. This is music for the ears of Banking CIOs. Sridhar explains, “They are now happy with uptime up to three 9s and we are now reaching up to four 9s: it’s improving day by day.” The Cloud4C banking community cloud has been making good strides recently with Indian Banks subscribing to the Banking Community Cloud and operating their banks successfully. As per Sridhar, the Banking Cloud has over already powered 16 Banks in India, Middle East and Europe and the numbers are growing at a steady pace. Sridhar opines, “All of this happened in the midst of a highly competitive marketplace. So that’s our strategy: continue to differentiate and provide a different value proposition all together. There is nobody else in India or globally doing the same thing as of now. I believe this (community cloud) will be very big in the coming years.” APRIL 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 39

“(Harnessing of Smart Availability) is an improvement over traditional high availability tactics,

most of which entail unnecessary infrastructural complexities without regard to domain objectives.”

SIMPLIFYING DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION: INCREASED UPTIME, LOWER DC COST AND FREE IT PROS

Smart Availability focuses on adapting to changing business requirements, resulting in fewer OS environments to manage, fewer maintenance issues and IT headaches, lower costs and ultimately a superior marketplace advantage.

E

nterprise IT organizations have a valuable opportunity to achieve digital transformation with a new release from DH2i, the applicationfocused Smart Availability, DR and cost improvements provider. The update, DxEnterprise version 17.5 (DxE v17.5), builds on earlier versions of the DxE software with a number of enhanced features, including industry-first support for Windows/Linux failover in a cross-platform environment. Software Enables Digital Transformation: The expense and difficulty of modernizing old computer infrastructure presents a formidable challenge to IT management. “Over 90 percent of IT managers said security issues and performance issues were inevitable if legacy applications weren’t modernized,” according to research from Futurum. “Companies are spending 60-80 percent of their IT budgets on maintaining old computing infrastructure.” This represents a 42 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    APRIL 2018

significant waste in money, along with massive headaches for IT teams. Digital transformation is crucial, then, for enterprise IT organizations, according to 451 Research Principal Analyst, Jay Lyman. “[Digital transformation] represents effective use of many software components, such as containers, and a growing variety of hybrid infrastructure that includes public clouds, private clouds and on-premise environments,” How It Works: DxE v17.5 solves a crucial industry matter: ensuring high availability and disaster recovery across Windows and Linux. It is the industry’s first and only solution that automates fault detection and failover between Windows and Linux for databases, Docker containers, cross-platform availability groups, and application services. The new solution unites Linux and Windows management in a single console, and encapsulates native database instances and Docker images for simplified support of

digital transformation initiatives. The release further builds on DxE v17 by adding flexible, native support for Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Availability Groups. It features automatic Windows/Linux failover, management, orchestration and automatic failover of Linux application services, including native, open source databases, as well as automatic Windows/Linux failover clustering in AWS and Microsoft Azure without WSFC or Active Directory. SQL Server 2017+ users can seamlessly move workloads and data between any cloud, and can scale cloud-based analytics and business intelligence nodes. Public cloud providers and MSPs likewise benefit from being able to create a single cross-platform service with near-zero planned or unplanned downtime for customer applications. This provides a new recurring income opportunity for these service providers. Another key innovation in DxE v17.5 is its harnessing of Smart Availability, which decouples databases, Availability Groups, and containers from operating system and IT infrastructures. This allows workloads to dynamically move to their optimal execution venue in terms of computational and budgetary concerns. It is an improvement over traditional high availability tactics, most of which entail unnecessary infrastructural complexities without regard to domain objectives. Smart Availability focuses on adapting to changing business requirements. The result is fewer operating system environments to manage, fewer maintenance issues, fewer IT headaches, lower costs and ultimately a superior marketplace advantage.

“As the industry grows, consumers and businesses want quality voice transactions without interrupted service.”

SIP AND VOIP TECHNOLOGY BRINGING A GREAT CHANGE IN BUSINESS COMMUNICATION IP networks, data and voice can be routed through different paths and bandwidths with real-time costs of global swapping between carriers helping quality improvements, SIP and VoIP technology is here to stay and is bringing about great change in the way India is communicating within borders and with the world.

T

echnology helps us to connect with people living in remote areas, making communication extremely simple and quick. The telecommunication science is improving day by day and the advancement in the telecommunication devices like mobile phones has shortened the distance between people. Today, anyone can talk, chat, and make video calls across continents and countries with the help of VoIP and SIP calls. SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol, which is a signaling protocol defined by IETF. It is now being used widely in order to control the communication sessions like video and voice calls over Internet. The SIP calls are made to create, modify and terminate unicast (two-party) or multicast (multiparty) sessions. A session may

contain single or numerous media streams. The SIP protocol can also be used for multimedia distribution, video conferencing, presence information, instant messaging, online games and file transfer. The SIP is a type of Application Layer protocol that is developed as an independent Transport Layer. This application uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), or Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). SIP calls make use of a text-based protocol and incorporate with many other elements like HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). Utilizing Voice over IP means having to have only one wiring system into a home or a business. Imagine starting up a new company in a new location and only having to wire for Internet.

That’s right, one Internet line can take care of all communication needs, including telephone, data exchanges, online faxing, and inter-office messaging. Computers can connect to computers around the world and cost much cheaper than a standard long-distance plan with traditional telephones or with roaming costs on cell phones. As long as there is an Internet connection available, VoIP technology may be utilized. The way a voice may be transmitted over the Internet is through integrating voice traffic into a flow of data over a network, vocalizing over Internet connections, using a computer in place of a household or commercial traditional telephone system. When placing a call, the caller’s voice is routed through all-purpose packet-switched Internet network and the data is transferred. Now, telephone transmission lines can be replaced and a single source of transmission used. Voice and data can be transmitted through a multipurpose network with a VoIP Internet phone. With the help of such VoIP, SIP protocols, today we can easily communicate and collaborate with people living all around the world. The SIP technology needs only broadband internet connection and IP or particular smart phones. The aforementioned feature is accessible on lots of messengers, websites and various portals with which you can call anybody living in distant places. VoIP services are based either free on per-minute rate or flat-rate. IP networks, data and voice can be routed through different paths and bandwidths. Also real-time costs of global swapping between carriers, helps quality improvements. As the industry grows, consumers and businesses want quality voice transactions without interrupted service. There is no doubt this fantastic technology is here to stay and is bringing about great change in the way India is communicating within borders and with the world. “Some companies have built built their very Businesses on their ability to collect, analyze, and act on

data. Every company can learn from what these firms do.”

PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS IN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT With the amount of data generated, it is vital that businesses grasp meaningful insight from data and analytics – but what key areas should be focused on for best results, and how could this enhance the backbone of your company, the supply chain.

T

he tsunami of big data created by the Internet of Things (IoT) demands that companies employ intelligent data management techniques to separate the wheat from the chaff, or find the ‘good data’. Adding to the fact that 90% of the world’s data has been created in the last few years alone, it’s vital that businesses grasp meaningful insight from data and analytics – but what key areas should be focused on for best results, and how could this enhance the backbone of your company, the supply chain? Extending out from just mining existing data, predictive analytics seeks to extract information from current data sets in order to forecast future probabilities with an acceptable level of reliability, including a few alternative scenarios and risk assessment. “Being in logistics, it’s crucial to help upstream and downstream partners grow,” Predictive Analytics in Logistics /SCM 44 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    APRIL 2018

Improve decision making by enabling learning from past experience. There are way too much data and too many variables to manually analyze or use traditional statistics techniques. Traditional analytical / statistical methods fail due to complex nonlinear & multivariable combinations of data. Get strategic competitive advantage. The other role for predictive analytics is contributing the mathematics of optimization. Optimization isn’t new but any time there are two or more cost / benefit curves to compare, optimization techniques should be able to suggest the optimum tradeoff between the two, guided by whatever external business conditions you want to impose (least risk, highest ROCE, least capital intensive, fastest to achieve, and so on). Visualization plays an important role especially at the production level. We want the models we create to be easily understood by workers at all levels. Visual displays like dashboards on tablets are increasingly a valuable medium for converting

the large scale action into the specific tasks and needs of the person using it. This means drilling down to the atomic level of activities, inventory, procurement, shipping units, and customer orders. Big data architectures are clearly a plus, but even more so the new Hybrid Transactions Analytic Platforms (HTAPs) like SAP HANA. These new platforms are completely in-memory, hold ‘big data’ volumes of data, and remarkably can process both transactional and analytic queries simultaneously. These new tools mean near zero delay in interpreting the inflow of customer orders, current inventory positions, and any manufacturing or external delays into near instantaneous updates to supply chains forecasts and plans at all levels of detail. In its simplest form, managed analytics combines transportation data, along with several other databases, into a central data warehouse and applies a sophisticated set of analytical tools and algorithms. This process effectively identifies opportunities to create value for customers, optimize supply chain visibility, performance and spend l High-level list of activities that could be improved with the application of predictive analytics: l Demand Analytics – How is my forecast tracking with actual sales. l Finished Inventory Optimization – What stock should I hold and where should I position it. l Replenishment Planning Analytics – What, when, and where should I ship. l Network Planning and Optimization – Do I have the right network of manufacturing and warehousing facilities. l Transportation Analytics – Optimizing transportation routes and loads including contract compliance. l Procurement Analytics – How to achieve lowest landed cost and secure long-term high quality supplier partners.

“Though complete automation of customer service isn’t advisable, even if it is partially automated with the help

of chatbots, it can help save a considerable business expense, that too at an at par efficiency.”

HOW CHATBOTS ARE CHANGING CUSTOMER SERVICE BUSINESS

Since the cost of introducing chatbots and making them efficient over a period of time are declining, along with increases in significant potential benefits, a largely automated customer service experience is not far from reality.

S

ales and customer support services have already undergone a sea change from how they were a decade back. With artificial intelligence and chatbots, they are leapfrogging into another era. Chatbots are already getting to the forefront of enterprise interaction with their customers. Chatbots allow customers to interact with companies through simulated conversations. Companies can improve customer experience through chatbots, respond faster and engage customers better. Though complete automation of customer service isn’t advisable, even if it is partially automated with the help of chatbots, it can help save a considerable business expense, that too at an at par efficiency. Talking about customer experience, the faster response time from chatbots will be an immediate relief to customers. Chatbots can analyze call history and understand the query sensitivity, allow-

ing them to respond better when their problem will be resolved, and may even set an automated process in motion for the resolution, in near future. They can even be the future of brand engagement, with promotions of a customized offer that can be initiated through chatbots, and customers can get all their queries answered about the offer through the chatbot itself. Moreover, chatbots can be really effective when customer queries and requests are in a specific area with predictable solutions. Simple troubleshooting and customer education queries can be scripted and the resolutions can be guaranteed to be of higher reliability and accuracy. Human workforce can be freed up for more complex tasks or issues. Although enterprises will need to move ahead on automating customer services through chatbots with caution. Chatbots should ideally be avoided in cases where customer is already too aggrieved to be handled by a non-human interface. Automated conversations should be

designed carefully over a period of time. ICICI Lombard’s chatbot platform MyRA, which addresses queries on two and four-wheeler insurance, as well as fire and burglary insurance for SMEs. The platform encompasses all stages of policy purchase/ renewal – starting from product selection, premium calculation and product fitment to even online sales closure. It also enables comparison between products. Being modeled on NLP (Natural Language Processing) it is conversational and easy to understand. In case of a complex issue needing resolution, it automatically transfers the chat to a customer care executive for a live chat. Another unique feature is that it predicts the next possible query from the customer and displays it in a predictive box. MyRA has been used by over 2,39,407 customers since its launch in December 2016, and has sold as many as 3,288 insurance policies. The buzz about chatbots has been doing the rounds in business parlance for more than a year now, and will continue to be there as chatbots become an important part of the customer service mix. Since the cost of introducing chatbots and making them efficient over a period of time are declining, along with increases in significant potential benefits, a largely automated customer service experience is not far from reality. Given recent predictions about machine-learning and advanced artificial intelligence, we soon may be presented with opportunities for chatbots to learn through each customer’s individual history to provide an unparalleled level of customized service and personalization in query resolution.
