Manuel Jimenez Garcia is currently Course Master of Research Cluster 4 at the MArch Graduate Architectural Design (GAD) and Unit Master of MArch Unit 19, both at The Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL)(London); he is also curator of the Bartlett Computational Plexus and Programme Director at the Architectural Association’s Visiting School in Madrid (AAVSM). He has taught and run workshops at Architectural Association’s Design Research Laboratory (AADRL) (London), Polytechnic University of Architecture (Madrid), European University Madrid and L’École Spéciale d’Architecture (Paris). Manuel graduated in Architecture from the European University of Madrid, he holds a masters in Architecture + Urbanism (AADRL) from Architectural Association and a masters in Design and Computer modeling from CICE new technologies professional school. He has Amid(cero9) and Naja & deOstos, participating actively in multiple international recognised projects. Manuel Jimenez is a registered Architect at the ARB Architects Registration Board. He is the co-founder of Ctrl+M and madMdesign, an architecture practice based in London. His work has been featured widely in Acadia 2012 (San Francisco), Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (London), X Bienal Española de Arquitectura (Spain), and Rethinking the Human in Technology Driven Architecture 2011 (Crete).

The concept of material self-organization or ‘material agency’ has been discussed in modern science and philosophy in the context of non-linear evolutionary theories. Deleuze and Guattari argue that there are inherent morphogenetic capacities in all areas of life. They are challenging Aristoteles’ hylomorphic model claiming that Matter is active and dynamic, possessing self-organizing capacities enabling it to negotiate complex organizational patterns and continuously evolve through the interaction of its internal morphogenetic potentials and external environmental forces. In this context our research is based on the generative potential of material computation to inform the design process. Our material system investigates forming through machinic design operations on Matter. We set up an ‘abstract machine’ of design systems which return ‘formalized contents and expressions’. patterning techniques, including pressure points and connection types. Pouring points vary in number, location and height. Our folding technique allowing us to create a mould for any number of connected surfaces out of a continuous piece of Lycra.

While the interaction of the internal morphogenetic capacities of both plaster and Lycra and external environmental forces result in an innovation of formation that cannot be preconceived. In this sense, Matter and its self-organizational properties are used as an operative tool in the design process. The duality of the the individual surface and the connected poly surface is adding another level of complexity, in which interactions of material self-organization at the local level result in emergent behaviour at the global level.
