La ex Secretaria de Estado estadounidense, Hillary Clinton declaró por tercera vez ante el Congreso. El Comité Selecto de la Cámara dedicado a Bengasi se inauguró el jueves por la mañana 22 de octubre a las 10 horas. El Rep. Trey Gowdy hizo la declaración asegurándole a Mrs. Clinton que la investigación del panel no iba contra ella. Afirmó que quería encontrar la verdad sobre lo que sucedió en Bengasi antes, durante y después del ataque en el que murieron el embajador Chris Stevens y otros tres estadounidenses. El Rep. Elijah Cummings habló por los Demócratas en el panel y dijo que los Republicanos ya habían dicho que el comité estaba buscando perjudicar la candidatura de Clinton. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified for the third time before Congress. The House Select Committee on Benghazi opened on Thursday morning October 22 at 10 am. Rep. Trey Gowdy made the opening statement assuring Mrs. Clinton that the investigation of the panel was not about her. He stated that he wanted to find the truth regarding what happened in Benghazi before, during and after the attack that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. Rep. Elijah Cummings spoke for the Democrats on the panel and said that Republicans had already said that the committee was looking to hurt Mr. Clinton’s candidacy. “My goal is to defend the truth,” said Mr. Cummings later. Hillary Clinton opened by saying that she was proud to serve her country and asked the panel to rise above partisanship. Rep. Peter Roskam, asserted that the decision to invade Libya was the result of Mrs. Clinton’s leadership. According to his account, Hillary Clinton overcame opposition form within the White House, convinced President Obama, got the support of the United Nations and of Arab countries against Mohamed Gaddafi. It seemed clear from his line of questioning that he was building a case to assign Mrs. Clinton responsibility for the dangerous situation in Libya and her apparent lack of concern for the security of her personnel. Clinton: “I take responsibility for what happened,” regarding the security measures in Libya and other diplomatic posts. “I did not see, approved or denied security requests.” But in her later answers she seemed to evade responsibility, stating that other State Department officials had decided that Chris Stevens could go to Libya and had authority to decide what to do. But she wants to take responsibility. “I knew exactly what we were doing,” said Mrs. Clinton in reaction to a question about her apparent lack of concern about Benghazi. The core of Mrs. Clinton’s defense about the lack of security in Benghazi is that the post was not an embassy or a consulate and it had no official status--“the Benghazi facility was temporary.” One of the Democrats on the panel, Rep. Adam Smith has called for the committee to be disbanded and protested the expenditures that have proved nothing new. “I didn’t think this committee should have been formed in the first place.” Then he added: “this committee is focused on you.” The same congressman later said that budget uncertainties create insecurity because the different departments of government don’t know how much money they can spend. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Arkansas said that the committee has indeed learned new things like the use of a private email server. Mrs. Clinton admitted that she had been briefed and was aware of the insecurity in Benghazi. But she said that there were no recommendations to leave Benghazi in spite of the attacks. Even on the eve on the anniversary of 9/11 there were no credible threats to the security of the mission in Benghazi. Concerning the balance between security and the risks of diplomacy Mrs. Clinton said that the diplomats have to be right one hundred percent of the time as they assess risks. Mrs. Clinton said that she did not take extra measure because “We have a process.” In the final analysis this is a political game. Both sides are looking bad because they have turned the hearings into a partisan battle. The GOP was the biggest loser in this encounter, and after 11 hours of hostile questioning Mrs. Clinton looked more presidential.
