Kinvaro T-Slim receives German Design Award Another award for Kinvaro T-Slim: After the unique movement system received the Red Dot Award earlier this year, it has now been given the German Design Award. This prize is one of the most renowned design awards worldwide and enjoys a high reputation far beyond specialist circles. Every year a top-class international jury presents the German Design Award, which was created by the German Design Council. It is given to products and projects that are

pioneering in the international design landscape. The goal is to promote a design-oriented economy. Kinvaro T-Slim meets these requirements in the eyes of the jury, which presented the award to the movement system in the category of Excellent Product Design - Furniture. “We are thrilled to receive yet another award for Kinvaro T-Slim," commented Albert Trebo, Managing Director at GRASS.

Kinvaro T-Slim is the thinnest, most efficient flap system GRASS has ever developed. It combines purist aesthetics, a very stable construction and the art of perfect movement in an exemplary manner. The flap system blends almost invisibly into the furniture, opening up new possibilities for wall cabinets and offering furniture designers and constructors maximum flexibility. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, this minimalism also has a further advantage: The flap system requires very little space, so that the available storage space can be optimally utilised. ❚

Homag bundles its activities in the construction elements sector The Homag Group intensifies its activities in the new market segment, Construction Elements Solutions, by acquiring 80% of the shares in the Danish engineering and manufacturing company System TM. System TM is a leading supplier of optimisation and systems solutions for the timber processing industry. In 2019, the company generated an annual turnover of approx. 30 million euros with approximately 130 employees. The new segment, Construction Elements Solutions, will combine timber production and processing technology along with Homag’s existing activities Pekka Paasivaara, CEO of Homag Group, explains: "We want to become a system supplier for the complete process chain in the area of construction elements, including cross-laminated timber (CLT). We are already in a good starting position. With System TM, we are acquiring an

experienced, leading manufacturer with high-end products and a high reputation in project implementation." Markus Vöge, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing of the Homag Group, explains: "The business models of System TM support the strategic goals in the area of sustainability. With wood as a renewable raw material, we can achieve eco-friendly buildings and healthy living environments. Additionally, the strategic partnership with Hundegger, which was initiated in 2019, will remain an important component of our new business segment.”

company. Homag is the ideal partner for us, because next to our existing business in cross-cutting and finger joining solutions, it will enable us to expand into the area of cross-laminated timber. We see growth potential in this business segment. The new setup for us is a logical step as we have already been cooperating with Homag in North America very successfully.” ❚

Jan J. Samuelsen, CEO of System TM explains, "The company founders and former majority shareholders, Poul and Ingrid Thøgersen, have decided that now is the right time to retire, and to bring the ownership to new shareholders, who believe in the business philosophy of System TM and support the positive development of the

From Status Quo to New Normal Story by Philip Ashley What unsettled times we’ve lived through but it’s a long way from being over. What appeared to be an overnight lockdown and its consequences on our social lives and the economy was followed by the business world's gradual reawakening and the prospects of a future with many variables. Being agile; or rather, staying agile, is the order of the day, as this is the only way to be prepared for the new normal, whatever that may be. Supply industry at a glance Italian suppliers of wood working machinery and wood-furniture technology (Source: ACIMALL) recorded a decrease of orders by 10% compared to the same quarter of 2019, in line with the trend of the entire machine tools industry. Orders on the domestic market decreased by 32%, as opposed to a better trend of international demand, which decreased by 1% only. This general trend is mitigated by the fact that orders increased by more than 40% compared to the terrible period of April-June 2020. 47% of the interviewed companies indicate a positive production trend, 18% decreasing and 35% stable. In Australia, manufacturers have taken advantage of government incentives to purchase machinery and suppliers have reported a steady stream of containers coming into the country with much of the equipment sold before it hits the wharf. To support their customers through these difficult times, most of the major suppliers have presented online events that they say have proved successful and of course, their digital communication is maintained. Trade Show Outlook In 2021 a number of trade shows are still planned. The main events on the

Supplier October/November 2020

international stage are the interzum and Ligna shows, scheduled to normally run back to back early May next year. Ligna has announced it will run in September and it’s unclear whether or not Interzum will shift so visitors can still attend the two shows without making two international trips. Even with no or few COVID cases, if the shows go ahead, the first issue will be whether or not it will be feasible to visit from a country with no COVID and how difficult it will be to return. At the show, organisers promise stands designed for social distancing; wider aisles; safety rules and disinfection stations available for visitors. Organisers recommend the use of the German CORONA warning app but like Australia, this is voluntary. However, there is an upbeat mood and strong interest as interzum exhibitors look forward to the forthcoming event with anticipation. There is a strong drive from companies that want to present their products, developments, and services as engines of innovation and trendsetters in a post-CORONA competitive environment that is still being shaped and that remains partly surrounded by uncertainty. The now clearly identifiable boost for global digitalisation resulting from the coronavirus lockdown calls for trade fair organisers to present intelligent answers to the question of how we are to face the emerging new reality.

The organizers of LIGNA have announced the focus topics for next year's event. As the world's leading trade show for woodworking and wood processing equipment, machinery and tools, LIGNA is looked to as a guide for the key issues that will shape the wood industry in the coming years. The next edition of LIGNA will put the spotlight on the digital transformation of the woodworking industry, and the bioeconomy. The digital solutions on display will cover planning and design to production and quality monitoring. More manufacturers of machinery for processing solid and engineered wood are offering digital systems solutions. Industrial plant providers are increasingly opting for robotics systems for materials handling, human-machine interaction and surfacing functions. Key themes include cloud-based data management, standardization, interfaces, building information modelling, timber flow management and augmented and virtual reality applications. Bioeconomy refers to the transition from a fossil fuel and mineral resources-based economy to a renewable resources-based economy. As one of the world's most important renewable resources, wood has a central role to play in this process. By choosing Green Material Processing as a focus topic for LIGNA 2021, the organizers are highlighting the economic and technological innovations arising from the new processing and finishing options for timber as a key renewable resource. Beyond 2021 The date for Xylexpo in Milan has been postponed to 2022 but no date has been set yet. It will probably be held in May, a few months before our own AWISA show in Sydney. These

may be the first trade shows manufacturers can reasonably expect to visit. The Xylexpo exhibition team is already working to design an event that considers new ideas and recent changes to create a new and more modern ‘digital oriented’ showcase. Xylexpo has been declining in recent years but if Ligna does not go-ahead next year, Xylexpo could get a new lease of life in 2022.

In March 2020, the Australian Woodworking Industry Suppliers Association announced that the AWISA 2020 exhibition that was to take place in July 2020 was being postponed. Originally planned for early 2021, the difficulty was finding a vacant space of the size needed to hold such a large event. The AWISA board therefore decided to delay the next AWISA

New Acimall President The general assembly of Acimall, the association of Italian manufacturers of furniture and wood technology, approved the appointment of Luigi De Vito (Scm Group, Rimini) to President for the 2020-2023 period, together with Marianna Daschini (Greda, Mariano Comense) taking the role of Vice President. The assembly accepted the nominations by the managing board and approved the financial statement of one of the most difficult years for Acimall and the entire world economy. De Vito is currently wood Division Director at Scm, in charge for production, product development, sales and after-sales service. De Vito took the opportunity to greet

Supplier October/November 2020

many business owners attending the video conference, and first of all he thanked the outgoing president Lorenzo Primultini, “… who has been able to guide the association through one of the most difficult times in history, while keeping a focus on the values that a business association must preserve”. De Vito then introduced Vice President Marianna Daschini, stressing the value of a young female manager in a high-profile role. ❚

New Priorities The lack of opportunities for business partners to meet in person in recent months means that face-to-face exchanges are now immensely important. Focused showcases of innovative product developments strengthen established global marketplaces, and recent trends are resulting in new priorities for industry exhibitions and changing traditional trade fair profiles. Even at this early stage, German and Italian trade shows are already registering excellent demand and large numbers of bookings ranging from familiar names from previous events to smart newcomers and start-ups right through to major industry players that have once again recognised the tremendous role that key business events play in or after crisis situations. The question for Australian visitors will be: will it be worth the trouble? ❚

Concelo has Clip’ n’ Clean features for not only the buckets and liner holders, but the framework the buckets sit within also simply clip out for cleaning. Waste bins are notoriously dirty and smelly and every aspect of the Concelo waste bin design has ensured that thorough cleaning is possible and simple to do. In addition, the Active Lid can be removed and cleaned with very little effort and is ergonomic for the user. ❚

Edge Banding

Feature

Story by Philip Ashley In the realm of high production cabinet making, edge banding has advanced as much as any technology from innovations in machine automation and computerisation, and developments in modern materials. Read on for, ‘almost everything you always wanted to know about edge banding but were afraid to ask.’ Excellent Edge The basic equipment needs for most kitchen and bathroom manufacturers are a CNC nesting machine and an edge bander. Some high-volume enterprises use an automated ‘beam’ saw to cut multiple sheets at a time because in any cabinet, nearly half of the carcase parts are the same size (the sides). Cutting these in a stack on a beam saw can be a more efficient way of generating parts for the drilling machine. No matter how the parts are cut and drilled, the non-negotiable machine in the process is the edge bander.

From top: Nobilia; Fusion Edge by Döllken; Egger digital printing Supplier October/November 2020

Edge banding covers the exposed edges of materials, giving the appearance of a solid or more valuable material. Some cabinet doors are now either sprayed or vacuum-formed but a lot are still edge-banded. All carcase parts with an edge seen by the customer must be edged. It is advisable to apply an edge tape to all exposed edges to avoid water penetration resulting in swelling of the board. Your other machines are important in producing a satisfactory product, but the edge bander is the machine that can bring a company undone if the finish is not of high quality.

11

Feature

Machines and Tools There are many types of edge banding machines available, starting from a small, hand-fed machine using pre-glued edge tapes. The quality of edges produced on such a machine can be described as poor to average. For the production manufacturer however, a power-feed machine with either a glue pot or glue cartridge system will produce a consistently good product. Some machines can also use other adhesion technologies, and these require some changeover of the machine, however the time to do this is being reduced as machinery is developed further.

The right feed speed and the correct, quality tools (cutters) will produce a chip-free panel but it’s the edge bander that will finish off the cabinets to the standard expected by most consumers. A tightfitting edge tape showing the smallest possible glue line is most desirable. The term ‘zero glue line’ has been thrown around for many years now, first with prohibitively expensive plasma, or CO2 and Diode Laser edge banding machines. Then, about ten years ago now, hot-air technologies brought down the cost of ‘laser’ edges and six years ago, near-infra-red (NIR) was first displayed at AWISA in Brisbane. When one element is joined to another there will be a line of some kind, however insignificant and microscopic that may be. The goal is the make that line as small as possible and modern equipment is capable of amazing results approaching the ‘zero’ visible line. Plasma and laser do this best if you can afford it, but very few Australian manufacturers use this technology. Hot air and near-infrared are more affordable technologies that do almost as good a job, at least as far as human sight is able to determine. PUR is also able to do a remarkably good job producing a near-invisible join and even companies producing cabinetry for laboratories use this. Production trends for cabinet manufacturers have been moving toward smaller batch runs for a number of years now. The marketing term ‘batch size one’ has been used by the Homag Group for a decade or more. Cutting and drilling all the cabinets for a kitchen on a nesting machine is a form of batch size one but the real meaning is to produce one part. This requires more set-ups and in the case of an edge bander, may require a change of edge tape and adjustment to the units on the machine. It could take five to fifteen minutes just to change from one edge thickness or edge detail to another. To achieve quick changeovers, computer controls play an increasing role in woodworking equipment and even lower-cost machines are now available with this.

Supplier October/November 2020

The other adhesion technologies edge banders use applies an edge material using specialised tapes with a co-extruded ’functional’ layer melted by either plasma; laser; hot air; NIR and soon, microwave, and pressed onto the panel. Plasma is a special mixture of air and gas that activates the functional layer on the reverse of the coextruded tape with a temperature of over 1000°C. It is expensive and rarely if ever used today, especially in Australia. Laser melts the functional layer with a laser beam operating in a wavelength range of approximately 980 nanometres. Laser is also expensive but used by large, high-volume manufacturers running at high feed speeds. 12

edge banders are more cost effective than in the past but will still add ten to thirty percent to the cost of the machine. There are a number of very good automatic PC-controlled machines available at a very reasonable cost including Toughcut (Beyond Tools); Bimatic and OTT (Tuckwell Queensland); OTT (I&J West Australia); NikMann (Forza Group); PE (Major Woodworking); Cehisa (MGM Machinery); and KTD (Leda Machinery).

Above: Duncan Such Vector Systems NZ Co-extruded edge tapes can also be ‘melted’ by forcing hot air onto the tape, a process developed by the Schugoma Company of Germany they call ‘fusion technology.’ The West Australian company Beyond Tools showed the first edge banding machine to use hot air to ‘activate’ the functional layer. It only took two years for Biesse (Airforce), Homag (Airtec) and (now) Altendorf’s Hebrock (Airtronic) to present either their own system, or the Schugoma technology on their machines. Felder and SCM (AirFusion) followed shortly after. The technology is affordable, but it can be noisy and uses a lot of compressed air and actually, not everyone is sold on it. Near-infra-red ‘radiation’ (NIR) is one of the newest technologies developed to activate the functional layer on fusion edge tapes. At the same time, the Weinig Group (Holz Her) created a quick changeover unit ‘Ltronic’ so you could use either the NIR or Glu-Jet unit. NIR heats and penetrates the edge material from the outside to the inside. NIR has no heat up time, no noise and does not require huge amounts of compressed air. IMA (Wood Tech Group) developed IMALUX three or so years ago. IMA won’t release details of how it

Supplier October/November 2020

works but our guess it’s similar to NIR. And at Ligna last year Felder Group brought out ‘GlueBox’ a system that applies PUR adhesive extruded as a tape that is applied inside their new application device. Most cabinet carcases produced in Australia are white so your edge bander will predominantly be used to apply a white edge. There may be other seen parts on a more ‘designer’ kitchen where the parts, numbering less than ten pieces are a different colour. For these and coloured carcase parts, the edge bander settings must be changed. Manual set-up machines can be time consuming to change from one edge thickness or detail to another. Manual machines are cheaper and may still involve the use of limit-switches that would get caught up with edge banding materials or glue and would often jam or break. Recently, machines rely on PLC (programmable logic control) to control the functions as the panel progresses along the machine. Edge banders now operate at higher speeds, but the biggest advantage is decreasing set-up times. Automated

A number of CNC machines have also been capable of applying edge bandings for some years now. Homag CENTATEQ; Biesse Rover A Edge; SCM Morbidelli p200 are three current machines that will do this with PUR adhesive and even Fusion edges, on straight or curved components. From New Zealand, but with machines installed in Australia, Duncan Such’s ‘Revolution180’ by Vector is a machine that automatically applies edges to pre-cut panels of any shape. It’s a dedicated edge bander so it won’t slow down production like a full-function machine does while it bands the edge. One thing that’s often overlooked when using high-end equipment are the cutting tools. The edge bander is capable of producing the highest quality product but only if the company is using quality tools. Cabinet manufacturers work with a mix of quite different edge materials and thicknesses and batch sizes are becoming smaller. Economical changeovers are made easier with the use of smart tooling such as the Leitz profile cutter ‘flexTrim3’ that allows automatic changes between three profiles within a few seconds without a tool change. The tool has diamond cutting edges for long life and is available at short notice. Another issue when edge banding is the noise that can be generated, mostly at the hogging (pre-milling) cutters. Leuco released a new ‘AirStream’ hogging tool

at the last Ligna two years ago that cleverly directs air through the tool body, eliminating air pressure areas that create noise. Suitable now for the Holz Her brand, the tools achieve a 97% improvement in chip removal, so the chips aren’t being machined several times as they whirl around the tool before being collected by the specially designed dust hood. Airstream tools are also available for edge rounding tools. Edge Banding Materials The materials used for edge banding are edge tapes, manufactured or supplied by most of the panel suppliers; and adhesives. Most of the adhesive products are supplied out of Europe. The major adhesive players include Rehau; Surteco (who supply Döllken); Kleiberit and 14 Henkel.

Above: Rehau 3D Edge-bands ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a durable and impact resistant, mechanically, and thermally resilient, environmentally responsible thermoplastic material. ABS is a ‘green’ material and can be recycled. If it’s burned, the resulting gas is not harmful. ABS edging responds well to heat, and at higher temperatures, it’s malleable and when cooled, becomes rigid. This chlorine-free plastic has been successfully used in the furniture industry for over 30 years. Polyvinyl Chloride, or PVC, is the most commonly produced and least expensive plastic on earth. Technically a synthetic plastic polymer, its composition is flexible enough to be rolled into spools. Although PVC can be recycled, the gas from burning is

Supplier October/November 2020

environmentally harmful. Decomposition also takes longer making PVC among the least green edging materials. PP (Polypropylene) is mainly used in pipe extrusion and the packaging industry. For more than 20 years, the chlorine-free semicrystalline plastic has also been increasingly used in the furniture industry because it is particularly impact-resistant and durable. It is also chlorine-free and can therefore be disposed of easily and without separation from the panel. PP guarantees a long service life for milling and other cutting tools, which greatly simplifies further processing. PP edge bands can be used in offices, kitchens and bathrooms, shop fittings as well as contract furnishing. PP is used for fusion edge banding.

3D PMMA (Polymethyl methacrylate) is a well-established, high quality synthetic thermoplastic that sets new technical and aesthetic standards for furniture edge bands. The transparency of the acrylic is better than that of glass making it ideal for the production of 3D edgings. The positioning of the decorative finish on the rear of the edge band means that it is fully protected against abrasion and damage, even when subjected to high levels of wear and tear. Melamine is a special paper that’s saturated and covered with lacquer. The lacquer adds resistance and strength to the paper. Melamine is not durable and is best used where there’s not a lot of traffic. Despite the addition of lacquer, melamine is still paper and so it is technically 16 less waterproof than other edges.

and is relatively inexpensive. EVA hot melt adhesives are classed as filled and unfilled. Filled adhesives cost less and offer good performance and a high final bond strength. The addition of fillers offers advantages such as preventing stringing and are beneficial when running porous chipboard. Unfilled hot melt adhesives can be applied at lower coat-weights to minimise the glue line and achieve tighter joints. Use EVA to bond PVC, melamine, ABS, acrylic and wood veneer.

Fusion Edge Banding refers to a technology where the ‘functional layer’ of ‘co-extruded’ edge tape is melted by Plasma, Laser, hot air or NIR technologies, and applied to the panel in an edge banding machine fitted with one of these technologies. Because there’s no glue involved, there’s no glue line and visually, there’s no difference between the hot air/laser process to laser edge banding. Until a few years ago all fusion edge tapes were imported, and the technology did not take off, but the edges are freely available, and some is even made here in Australia. The claimed advantages of fusion edge are a permanent invisible seam thanks to a pure polymer, adhesive-free solution; an exact colour match of the functional and decorative layer; freedom of colour and decorative design choice as all product ranges can be used for laser processing; increased resistance of the boards to heat and moisture; increased

Supplier October/November 2020

process reliability; minimised maintenance work and reduced set-up times and the matching of the edge band material/primer/ adhesive is no longer necessary. Despite these claims, many manufacturers argue PUR does an overall better job at a much lower cost. Wood veneers and solid timber strips can also be applied to panels for use in veneered furniture construction. The use of iron-on edges is now almost entirely the realm of the hobby woodworker. T-Moulding as an edge finish is now almost entirely non-existent. Adhesives EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) is still possibly the most common hot-melt adhesive used in edge banding. It is applied at between 180 to 220 degrees Celsius and can be melted many times without losing its stickiness, so there isn’t a lot of waste. It cures quickly

The first reactive PUR (polyurethane resin) hot melt adhesives were launched in 1987. PUR sets quickly and strengthens its bond over several days to achieve much higher bond strength as it is more of a chemical reaction than mechanical. PUR glue is applied at a lower temperature (130 to 150C) than traditional hot melt EVA glue and the re-melt temperature is much higher, so it resists de-lamination in hot situations such as oven surrounds. The process uses 40% less glue than hot-melt so it saves production costs, and you get a much thinner, near invisible glue-line. The minor drawback to using PUR is that the glue starts to ‘go-off’ once it’s exposed to air and must be kept in sealed containers. PA (polyamide) hot-melt adhesives are designed for high performance in severe environments. They are made with organic bases such as seed oils and are noted for high heat tolerance. They deliver an exceptional bond but can be a little more susceptible to moisture than other options. APAO (amorphous polyalphaolefin) hot-melt glue is popular in the automotive world: it resists fuel and acid better than most adhesives. It also has a longer open time and slower set time than EVA glue. It has a high melting point and thus higher heat resistance, plus a longer open time than EVA. The future could lie with adhesives developed for hightech applications, such as silicone-based versions that retain more flexibility. ❚

Top Tips for your Edge Bander Story by Philip Ashley The quality of your edge banding is affected by your equipment, raw materials, and operational proficiency. Let’s take a look at what the experts tell us. Top Tips for your Edge Bander EVA/PUR Hot Melt Edge banders are still the most used machines, they use a glue pot or cartridge to store and deliver the glue. For machines with a glue pot, an extra changeover pot will save a lot of time. Shut these machines off when not in use because the glue deteriorates over time. Clean the machine often. For the best adhesion to any product, acclimatise the board and edging to the factory environment over at least 24 hours for single sheets and three days for the boards in the middle of a pack. Some operators use a device to measure the temperature of both the board and edge to ensure they are the same. In winter especially, the glue will set too quickly through the application of adhesive on cold surfaces, leading to a poor bond. It is advisable to process the board as soon as possible after cutting it on either a saw or CNC machine and using pre-milling cutters will provide the best edge for banding. Your edge bander should be kept clean and located in an area free of dust and away from draughts near doors, as temperature variations will play havoc on your edge banding results. It is recommended that indoor temperatures for edge banding are above 15C and the temperature of the board and edge is 18C and above.

the glue in the system until it is dispensed and is less likely to be contaminated. Roller systems continually recycle the adhesive through the glue pot and is likely to pick up dust from the factory. If you have a roller, set it 0.1mm to 0.2mm away from the board for a good spread of glue. This reduces fibre contamination on the roller, reduces contamination in the glue pot, reduces damage to the board edge and gives an even coating of glue. Problems? At the start of every shift, run a test piece and pull the edge off by hand to inspect the result. If the edge banding pulls off easily, hot melt adhesive remains on the chipboard and you can see the grid pattern of the glue application roller; the potential causes are as follows. Not enough adhesive has been applied, the room temperature is too low, the edge banding material is too cold, the hot melt adhesive temperature is too low, the feed rate is too low or there is too little

pressure applied by application roller which should be set at 2.5 bar, depending on the machine. If the edge banding pulls off easily, hot melt adhesive remains on the chipboard, but the hot melt adhesive surface is totally smooth (edge banding slips off) then the board and/ or edge banding may be too cold. You should also check the hot melt adhesive type. If the hot melt adhesive largely remains on the edge band the temperature of the board material may be too high. If the join is not closed the problem may be eliminated by increasing the roller pressure, increasing the glue temperature, preheat the board or increase the feed speed. Typical application temperatures in straight line edge banders vary widely based on the characteristics of the EVA being used but are normally in the range of 180 to 220 degrees Celsius. PUR is a reactive glue, and the glue pot should be set in the range of 120 to 150

Storage Edge banding tape should be stacked horizontally, and this will maintain the initial tightness of the roll. The best temperature is a constant room temperature of 17-20 degrees Celsius. Store edges away from dust and preferably in a windowless room to protect them from UV light that could destroy the applied primer. Veneer edgings and end grain veneer should be stored in a tightly sealed plastic bag. This prevents them from drying out and becoming brittle. degrees Celsius. You can preserve used PUR glue for up to 7 days. To achieve an invisible glue joint special care must be given to provide a clean edge for processing. If you find indentations or scratches on the finished edge band you will need to clean the machine where the tape is drawn in, clean the pressure rollers. Blunt cutters and saws

will damage the edge so keep these sharp. If you follow a board as it goes through the machine you may pick up where the damage is occurring. You might also find it’s better to have only one or two people work your machine; that person(s) will take more care and eventually become familiar with the machine and potential problems and remedies.

PVC releases toxic gas when burned so responsible disposal of unwanted edges is highly recommended. ABS edge tapes are far more popular than PVC in European workshops. The Swiss edge banding manufacturer Rehau says, “ABS is chlorinefree both during manufacturing and in the final product. Unlike PVC, ABS may be incinerated with general waste.” ❚

Proform and OTT, Winning! Story by Philip Ashley Mark Anderson has been producing cabinet components for over thirty years now. Over that time, he’s learned what works and what doesn’t. One thing he’s definitely learned is the value of PUR glue and OTT as his choice of edge bander. Mark started out in 1991 producing post formed benchtops for cabinet makers. Proform Products was established in 1991 and is now a multi-faceted custom manufacturer and supplier with a reputation for quality and service. They supply benchtops; flat-pack and assembled kitchens and other cabinetry from Vanities to wardrobes and reception counters for domestic and commercial customers, along with a wide range of products like melamine board, laminate, ABS edging, Riepe® edge band cleaner, drawer systems and cabinet hardware. Today the company employs over fifty people, but Mark is still heavily involved with everything that goes on there. And so, Mark is the perfect person to talk about their ‘journey’ with the OTT edge bander. Mark says, “The OTT wasn’t our first

machine, we had two other brands before we decided to make the change. We learnt a lot in the early days and eventually decided we needed a more robust machine that would apply PUR glue. The OTT came in as the most cost-effective solution.” It proved to be sound decision; their first OTT machine was purchased in 2006 and has just been sold after 14 years of use and an incredible 2.4 million metres of applied edges! Proform has had six OTT machines over the years and now use three, the latest machine bought only recently. The latest Tornado was supplied with OTT’s cleaning station that Mark says, “Saves us a lot of time.” He confides, “With our last machine, I didn’t even get a price on any other brand, I knew what I wanted.” Mark came across the OTT through the West Australian distributor I&J Machinery. Ian Patterson introduced him to the machine at an AWISA show. Mark later went to shows in Europe and visited the Austrian factory, so when it came time to replace a previous machine brand, his longstanding relationship with OTT began. Mark says, “Since Kleiberit brought affordable PUR adhesive onto the market here in

Australia about four years ago, all of our products across our entire range are bonded with PUR. I think it’s better than hot air laser edges. Those need specialised edge tapes, and the adhesion is not as strong; it comes off too easily. PUR gets around the ‘grain’ and that makes it a much deeper bond and more moisture resistant.” Mark isn’t alone with that opinion; other high-profile industry personalities agree with him. “We use PUR on our anti-fingerprint boards for doors and with the Riepe cleaning agent the doors come off the edge bander without having to be touched by human hands. They’re ready to go on the cabinet” Mark says. Proform process a lot of whiteboard but find that recently, some coloured carcases are being specified. “We custom build our kitchens, even those we sell flat pack to the DIY market. I see a trend to more coloured carcases and in fact we’re about to release our own range,” Mark says. To achieve quick changeovers, Mark needs a machine that is easy to set up and can be changed right

the first time. The OTT machine delivers just that. He says, “We use white and clear glue depending on the board colour and we change these over several times a day. With the OTT service station, we pull the glue pot and roller off the machine, put it on the service station and it will keep running while we run with a different glue colour.”

business what it is, but we also benefit from our automation and OTT is a big part of that.”

Proform produce for cabinet makers; the retail kitchen segment; multi-residential and commercial builders. Proform always look for new opportunities to diversify their market share. They distribute a large range of local and imported products. Like the rest of Australia, Mark says it’s always difficult to find good people and while he is blessed with many loyal, long-term workers, they always take on new apprentices and look for new people. Mark says, “At Proform, it’s the people who work here that makes the

What impresses Mark most about the OTT is, “The robustness of the machine, when you open the cabinet there’s lots of space, and air activation rather than electrical so we have few problems. In the range of machines most cabinet makers use, we think the OTT offers the best value for money against performance. I would say that had we not wanted the new service station we would have kept one of our first machines for another million metres,” He says. High praise indeed, but from someone who is as deeply involved as he is with the wonderful people at Proform, entirely credible.

Training

Training - what's in it for you? Story by Philip Ashley The Australian Government recently announced funding for 100,000 new apprentices and trainees through a $1.2 billion Boosting Apprenticeship Commencement fund. Training, what’s in it for you? In the 2020/21 Budget it was announced that an apprentice wage study would be available to businesses of any size who take on a new or recommencing apprentice. The value of the subsidy would be up to 50% of the eligible apprentice gross wage, capped at $7,000 per quarter per apprentice. The

Supplier October/November 2020

eligibility period of the fund would be from 5th October 2020 to 30th September 2021. For the furniture and cabinet industries the ACFA eligible qualifications are MSF31113 Certificate III Cabinet Making in either Generic; Kitchens & Bathrooms or Furniture. MSF30213 Certificate III Furniture Making, and MSF20313 Certificate II Furniture Making. To qualify, the apprentice must undertake a Certificate II or higher qualification and has a training contract formally approved by the state training authority. The subsidy is not available for any apprentice receiving any

other form of Australian Government wage subsidy such as ‘Supporting Apprentices and Trainees’ or ‘JobKeeper.’ Payments will be made quarterly in arrears, with first claims for the subsidy available from 1 January 2021. Final claims for payment must be lodged by 31 December 2021. Signing up your apprentice or trainee If you haven’t done this before, your first step is to find an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP). The ANP will provide information on the most suitable apprenticeship or traineeship for your

business; assist with the choice of Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to deliver training (the school or TAFE College); undertake most of the paperwork and administrative tasks to establish and maintain the apprenticeship or traineeship to its completion, and assess your eligibility to receive State and Australian Government incentive payments for apprentices and trainees and ensure applications are lodged in a timely manner. The ANP will help you and your apprentice/ trainee draw up a training contract. A parent or guardian will have to sign if the apprentice or trainee is under 18 years of age. The ANP forwards the paperwork to Training Services in your State and will monitor it for you until the Centre has approved and registered it. The ANP will make sure you and your apprentice/trainee are given a copy of the training contract. The RTO (School or TAFE College) is responsible for developing a Training Plan

Supplier October/November 2020

which must be completed within 6 to 12 weeks of the commencement of formal training. You may find you will be presented with a generic training plan as this is much easier to manage for the trainers, but you can insist on an individualised Training Plan that more closely meets your needs. The Training Plan should be developed in consultation with you, your apprentice/ trainee, and the RTO. In the past apprentices did a wide-ranging course of study that equipped them for the widest possible employment outcomes in the furniture industry. Changes to the courses of study, driven by manufacturers seeking workers more closely related to the skills needed in modern manufacturing have produced a situation where over 90% of graduates are suitable mostly only for the flat panel, cabinet industry. Very few graduates are suited to the solid timber sector, a sector that is arguably at a much higher skill level. You might want to consider what you are getting when

you are presented with a generic training plan, especially as most of the training on high-tech equipment will be provided by you. Your apprentice will not touch a CNC machine until their second or third year and a trainee might never see a machine. Each training plan defines the core and elective subjects and relevant competencies (skills) for your apprentice or trainee. The training plan will also list the work tasks related to the formal training and subject areas the RTO is delivering. Make sure you and your apprentice/trainee are issued with a copy of the Training Plan. Your ANP checks the Contract and Summary Training Plan and submits them for approval. You will get a letter advising of approval of the apprenticeship/traineeship. The training contract becomes binding from either the approval date indicated or the end of the probationary period, whichever is the latter. This changes the status of the apprenticeship or traineeship to registered. â?š

COVID trends in the furniture industry Story by Philip Ashley

T

he furniture industry is currently doing reasonably well worldwide, even in times of the Corona pandemic. Even in Europe where the pandemic has hit hard, there are positive signs. The reason for it having experienced strong growth is the consumers’ need for more liveable homes, as the home has reached a new level of importance. While each country’s furniture industry has been hit by the pandemic in its own way, there is a common ground. In the earlier stages of the crisis, the industry suffered a drop in sales and turnover. In the months following, a stronger demand for furniture could be seen, with a focus on domestic and especially kitchen and bathroom furniture. Speaking with furniture manufacturers, cabinet makers and suppliers round Australia, we have seen a demand for home furnishings across the board. As people stay at home, they notice the old kitchen, the broken cabinet, the squeaky door and are motivated to repair or replace them. In addition, a new form of furniture demand has emerged: home office furniture, but not the traditional desk, bookcase or filing cabinet. Working from home means having the furniture to do so, but not having it look like a permanent fixture. After all, one day people will return to the work office, but not everyone.

increasing around 10% compared to 2019. There is an increased need for conference room furniture and maybe less need for traditional office furniture. There is also a lot of development of Corona-safe furniture that is easily separated and sanitized.” Markus Wiesner is chairman of the European Furniture Industries Confederation (EFIC). He says, “The current discussions around a new office culture, home office and remote work may be a chance for the industry. Sustainability and a circular economy are among the top priorities of the European Commission, and within the European furniture industry there is a special task force attending these matters.” Dr. Georg Emprechtinger, owner of TEAM 7 and chairman of the Association

of the Austrian furniture industry adds, “The consumer is currently mainly asking for premium quality furniture, while the situation is more difficult for cheap mass products.” It’s the same in the US where furniture sales are at an all-time demand. Furniture stores believe it’s because people are spending so much time at home during COVID. “The furniture industry in itself is seeing a lot of demand right now. People are out there looking to replace stuff because they’re spending so much time in their homes,” Furniture and Appliance Mart vice president of marketing Jon Gadbois said. And Britain is in the grip of a COVID related home furniture boom that has left factories unable to keep up with demand.

Cecilia Ask Engström is director Industrial Development at the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry (TMF). She tells us, “Since May, there have been a lot of positive signs, especially the domestic market and here especially, the kitchen and bathroom segments have been doing well,

“It’s unprecedented,” says Peter Campbell, finance director of Long Eaton Sofas, part of a cluster of companies in the heartland of the UK’s furniture-making industry, near Nottingham. The furniture industry in Australia may not change a lot, but it will change, and not just because of CORONA. Take a look at the automotive industry here in Australia to see how quickly things can shift. Many companies try to be everything to everyone and either fail or struggle to really make the profit they were looking for. The advice from leading industry consultants is to do what you are good at and dominate that market. Currently there is a huge demand for ready to assemble office

furniture that provides a suitable work area yet doesn’t look like a permanent workspace. And you don’t have to do it alone. Consider Volkswagen, Ford, Amazon, Microsoft, and the Google subsidiary Waymo working together on the topic of autonomous driving. Several companies are in direct competition with each other yet are working together to get a common benefit. It’s called coopetition and the idea originated in1966 by economists Barry Nalebuff and Adam Brandenburger. Opponents join together for a common cause, but don’t have to merge, only the project merges. A scenario could be one or two companies developing a new range of say, home office furniture with a third company either selling that or renting it out via an online portal. ❚

ntil recently, traditional theories regarding competitive advantage advocate that achieving competitive advantage can be based on either product differentiation or cost leadership to outperform competitors. It is apparent that there is a product on the market that can satisfy both product differentiation and cost leadership: Nova Pro SCALA drawer systems. In order to achieve cost leadership, one needs to focus on minimising production inputs and in turn increasing efficiency in the production process. This is not solely attributed to the cost of the product;

equally important are total inventory, product complexity, processing and assembly time. Supplier Magazine spoke with Marius van der Walt, Operations Manager at Timberline Bathroom Products as well as Joseph and Joshua Franzone, owners of Divine Kitchens in Sydney. The overwhelming response from both companies is that the efficiency, ease of assembly in the factory and time saved in doing so is a significant cost benefit. “Our customers benefit in these areas due to our unique production process; single sheet steel construction for all SCALA décor

heights from H63 to H250 décors and most importantly laser welded back brackets. Our true high-side drawers (H186/H250) are made up of a mere 8 components; this is where we can achieve greater production efficiency,” Dave Woods, Product Manager at GRASS. “To assemble and install Nov Pro SCALA, it is as simple as mounting runners, fitting drawer profiles and front fixing brackets. There is no requirement for rear brackets and/or gallery rails with this innovative design” says Joseph and Joshua from Divine Kitchens.

Design & Trends

For larger manufacturers, processing speed is a major contributing factor in reducing costs. Marius van der Walt from Timberline Bathroom Products states that they can “produce a Nova Pro Scala drawer in no time, saving us time and money as labour is the largest cost to our business”. GRASS has the most advanced drawer assembly processing equipment available in Australia. Due to the laser welded back brackets and making use of the Tecmator industrial processing equipment, a Nova Pro SCALA drawer can be fully assembled in a mere 20 seconds; boosting efficiency and reducing the total labour cost for assembly in the factory. The second consideration for achieving competitive advantage is based on differentiation; relying on innovation, brand development, marketing and customer service to achieve competitive advantage. It was interesting that both parties interviewed support the idea that using GRASS products has added considerable value in this area. Timberline Bathroom Products is the largest producer of quality designer bathroom vanities in Australia and Marius van der Walt

says that, this being a European product, adds value both in functionality and reliability as well as visual appeal; “all the things that a customer is looking for when choosing a bathroom vanity”. Furthermore, he added that from a customer service perspective, the team loves the simplicity of the drawer system; it is so easy to help customers that have a query.

From the perspective of bespoke kitchen design, Joseph and Joshua Franzone from Devine Kitchens highlighted the significant benefit of the low pull out force of Nova Pro runners. “For projects with shadow line joinery, having the lowest pull out force on the market makes it easier for our clients to operate the drawers, and in particular our elderly clients. Dave Woods, Product Manager at GRASS informs Supplier that the pull out force of Nova Pro is 20N; this is particularly important in designing for Assisted Living where the maximum legislated opening force permissible is 20N – so Nova Pro is the only drawer runner that can achieve this in Australia today. In order for manufacturers to differentiate themselves in the market they are continually seeking ways to influence consumers through their product design. “The option of the H250 height profiles is a game changer in double wall drawers, we often design floor cabinetry with full height fronts which is now possible with both the H186 and H250” Joseph and Joshua, Divine Kitchens. Nova Pro SCALA drawers are tested and certified for drawer fronts up to 780mm in height. ❚

A Premium Product

M

att Lott, his wife and business partner, Danielle are typical of the many thousands of small, family owned furniture making companies around Australia. A family business succeeds because of the effort the family puts into it, like time, money, labour, and passion. If a family business prospers, it is usually because of purpose and vision to build a future. Matt and Danielle’s goal is to provide a premium product for existing and future customers and to achieve that, the business needs expertise, and the right equipment. For them, Biesse provides the right tools to achieve these goals. Matt is a qualified cabinet maker by trade and his teachers report he was one of those students that stood out from the rest. Matt mixed with others who wanted to learn, who

wanted to do the best job they could. At the time of Matt’s apprenticeship, the Victorian TAFE college was assisting CSIRO to research the manufacture of furniture from young Eucalypts and Matt jumped at the chance to get involved in something new. In fact, his work appeared in the trade press as an example of what was possible with the juvenile material. However, it was always Matt’s goal to enter the police force and so, after his apprenticeship, he joined Victoria Police and cabinetmaking became a hobby. Matt did this for ten years before moving to Queensland, securing safety positions in the public and private sector. Danielle and Matt had spoken often about one day starting their own business and so, in October 2018 they bought Gold Coast Wood Machining.

The company was a busy cut-to-size cabinet panel business, run by a husband and wife team who were retiring after thirty years. A good number of clients were on the books and Danielle and Matt thought they could make a go at it. The business had an old edge bander, a panel saw, and a pedestal drill housed in a relatively small workshop, so they knew they had to make changes. A business plan was developed that recommended the replacement of the edge bander within one year and the purchase of a CNC within five years but when they started production, they realised that something needed to be done much sooner than that. The edge bander was constantly needing attention and Matt found himself spending an inordinate amount of time cleaning up the finished boards. He had to hand-

feed the edge tape into the machine and hand finish all edges. It wasn’t the start to a new business he was looking for and so, Matt looked around for a replacement. At that time, fresh to a new business and unsure of the future, he started looking at used machines. He soon realised they were second-hand for a reason and turned and his attention to new machines. He had worked with Biesse CNC equipment at the TAFE College and, at one of the companies he worked for during his apprenticeship. He was familiar with the brand but wasn’t specifically looking for a Biesse machine until his finance company of all people, suggested he considered one. And so, armed with his essential wish-list of premilling and corner rounding, Matt contacted his local Biesse representative Chris Shortt to see what Biesse Group had to offer. His choice was a Biesse Jade 240 machine that came with a full set of machining units Matt and Danielle needed to ensure they could meet the needs of existing and future customers. It all happened very quickly and within only four months of buying the business they had their first Biesse machine, the Jade edgebander. Matt says, “The people at Biesse were really good to deal with. They worked with me to get the outcome we were after. We have a small workshop and I needed to be able to do all machining on my own. The Jade 240 ticked all my boxes.” Matt was looking for a premium product and credits the Biesse Jade 240 with producing the quality his customers were looking for. He said, “When we first started up, we thought the poor finish with our old edge bander could result in a loss of some of our customers. But with the Jade 240, we were able to produce exactly what they wanted, on-time and with a consistent finish. I knew exactly what would come out the end of the machine. A dependable finish

is especially important to us. The machine allows the versatility of using ABS edging, wide timber veneers for large doors and even profiling pencil edges in preparation for 2Pac doors. And when I want service, it’s good to know the Biesse technicians are based locally.” But the momentum did not stop there, and by May the same year they started looking for a CNC to meet the increased workload. Space and power supply were limited in the factory so a machine with a small footprint and low power consumption (Amps) was important. The Biesse Rover K1224 CNC nesting machine fitted the requirements. Matt comments, “Our relationship with Biesse Group when we bought the Jade was particularly good, so we decided to see what they had to offer. They didn’t let us down, supplying us with a very capable machine that fit our tight environment perfectly. It’s a small ‘cell’ with the CNC feeding off onto an outfeed table. I have a tipper bin that we modified to fit under the outfeed table and I’m able to label and put the parts through the edge bander while the Rover is cutting the next sheet. At the end of the day, the only limitation is my ability to keep up with it.” Gold Coast Wood Machining brings in some solid timber work, mostly because of the name and Matt can do most of the work

on the Rover nesting machine, even when the parts are longer than the machine bed. However, most of Matt and Danielle’s work is CNC cutting, drilling and edge banding of cabinet parts for other cabinetmakers, builders and DIYers. Matt says, “We look after our customers and have built strong relationships with them. We have an excellent reputation among the community for delivering 100% customer satisfaction and top-quality workmanship and it’s our Biesse Jade edge bander and CNC that produces the finish our customers see.” Any new business venture is time consuming, but their new Biesse equipment has enabled Matt and Danielle to keep the customers the previous owners handed over and allowed some growth that has seen them reach capacity. Matt believes integrated quoting software will give him more time and one day they could move into their own, larger premises. But for now, they are happy with their achievements and the way their Biesse machinery, and Biesse Group, work for their benefit. In his spare time Matt is learning to play the guitar and has a modest collection of old watches he will eventually do some restoration on. For now, though, his Biesse machines, like his guitar and watches, are finely tuned to ensure their success, even after just over a year and a half in business. ❚

New PC-SVMX clip by Fastmount

astmount is an award-winning New Zealand company designing and manufacturing hidden fasteners specifically to service the marine, architectural, aviation and recreational vehicle industries globally. With boatyards in over 50 countries using the Fastmount Panel Mounting System, its exceptional performance in the marine sector has since attracted companies in the architectural, recreational vehicle and aviation industries to use Fastmount products.

special tools. With a 15kg pull out load and 100kg shear load, the clip is perfect for installing heavier wall panels and ceiling panels without visible fixings.

Fastmount, recently introduced a new heavy-duty clip with a screw fixing to its Standard Range, aimed at further simplifying the interior panel installation process in the architectural market. The new PC-SVMX is compatible with all other female clips in the Standard Range, pairing best with the PC-SF1 for an installation without the use of As the architectural market continues to integrate Fastmount’s hidden panel mounting systems into its construction processes, there has been a requirement for a male clip in the Standard Range that could be installed with the least amount of extra tools possible. The clip takes on the qualities of the popular PC-VMX clip, such as a sturdy head shape and strong shear load and removes the selftapping base in favour of three screw holes, for rapid installation without special tools. The PC-SVMX can be installed without the need for the red CT-01ST centre point tool, typically used for panel to wall alignment, thanks to a self-centring point on the back face. Ideal for CNC machining, panels can be fabricated with pre-drilled screw holes, ready for clip installation. The clip’s sturdiness enables preinstallation of the clip off-site, without danger of clip damage in transit. “The PC-SVMX was an essential addition to the Standard Range, knowing that it would easily service both the architectural and marine industries. We see this clip being used on large ceiling panels with the PC-SF1 female clip for a simple screw-fix installation, with the peace of mind of an extra-heavy duty 15kg pull out load per clip set. The beauty of a screw fix is that it can be attached to almost any panel type,” comments Gregg Kelly, Managing Director & Head of Innovation at Fastmount. The new PC-SVMX is available from authorized Fastmount distributors worldwide. ❚
