FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT You are just beginning the academic journey with your young learner and we are happy that you have chosen the award-winning Edina Family Center and Edina Public Schools to be a partner on that road. The Family Center will provide an important educational foundation for your child and, we hope, will instill a love of learning. Life-long learning is a core competency that contributes to a student’s success in school, career and life. The committed staff of the Family Center are here to support you and your child during these early learning years. They are the first of many talented, experienced and dedicated teachers and staff that you can expect to meet throughout your Edina Public Schools experience. Just as your child grows and changes, we as a district are evolving to meet the needs of the Next Generation of students – YOUR student! Renovations and construction of all of our learning sites as well as educational program development are on the horizon. These changes are grounded in a strategic plan that looks to advance our tradition of excellence in three key areas — personalized learning for all students, comprehensive academic programing, and effective partnerships with our families and community. This vision of continuous improvement is focused on our core mission that all learners should have access to learning experiences that allow them to realize their potential and achieve their dreams. We are excited you have joined us and look forward to a long and rewarding partnership with you throughout your child’s time with Edina Public Schools. Regards, Ric Dressen Superintendent

FROM THE FAMILY CENTER COORDINATOR The Edina Family Center preschool began in 1985 and was originally called Discovery Preschool. Then as now, our preschool programs are designed to support the whole child and the child’s whole family. Then as now, the Edina Family Center preschool is the only public program that aligns its curriculum, staff development training, early childhood special education services and commitment to diversity and equity with the overall K-12 system. When you enroll your child in the Family Center preschool, you are charting a smooth course for your child’s educational experience and for your involvement in our community—one committed to high-quality lifelong learning. Research has shown that a positive connection to the public school system in the preschool years enables a smooth transition to kindergarten for young learners. Parents in our preschool programs grow as partners with teachers and practice hands-on involvement with their child’s learning from birth, with benefits extending through the elementary years and beyond. Whether you participated in ECFE with your first newborn, or just learned about the Edina Family Center, we are so glad you are here. Wherever you are on your parenting and educational journey, we welcome you! Best Wishes, Laurie Denn Edina Family Center Coordinator

BUILDING ON EDINA PUBLIC SCHOOLS CURRICULUM FOR LIFELONG SUCCESS The Edina Family Center, in partnership with Edina Public Schools, offers engaging, enriching and individualized experiences for all of our earliest learners. Our preschool is staffed by highly-trained, licensed teachers. Aligned to Minnesota State Standards, our curriculum and discovery-based settings help develop critical thinking skills and foster growth socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. We want to see each and every child succeed. Because parents, families and caregivers are a child’s first and most important teacher, we strive to help you grow in your role as advocate for your child on his or her lifelong learning journey. We pride ourselves on excellent teacher-parent communications. You’ll see regular documentation about your child’s growth in the areas of personal and social development, language and literacy, mathematical thinking and physical development. We provide family conferences twice a year. Families receive regular newsletters with recaps and preview of activities, daily highlights, and recommendation on how you can extend your child’s learning beyond the school day. Be sure to check out our parent/child options throughout this catalog, and consider adding a parent/child ECFE day to your weekly routine. Sometimes additional learning support may be needed for your child. As a part of Edina Public Schools, the Family Center works seamlessly with Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE), the Early Childhood Targeted Services Manager, the Edina Public Schools Literacy Coordinator, and the Edina Resource Center to help ensure that all children are ready for Kindergarten.

PARENT/CHILD OPTIONS Looking to be more actively involved in your child’s preschool experience? Pair the traditional pre-K experience with a one-day-a-week parent/child class. Get to know your child’s peers, classroom routines, curriculum and teachers. Break-out parent-only discussion groups, led by a licensed parent educator, provide opportunities to connect with other parents while exploring topics such as school readiness, literacy, supporting children’s learning, developing independence and other topics chosen by the group. The other day is an independent preschool day. Child care for siblings is available on the parent/child day. Sibling care is a separate registration, see page 13 for more information.

AGES 3 YEARS With imagination in full gear, three year old’s love to ask questions and share their thoughts about everything. Our classroom encourages curiosity and rich, exploratory play for this increasingly independent stage of development, and your preschooler will learn more about the world outside of themselves. Through encouraging self-expression, three year old’s will begin to understand that others, including storybook characters and classmates, have real feelings and different experiences. Capitalizing on this social and emotional maturation allows for students to make their first real friendships while discovering an excitement for their own intellectual curiosity.

September 2016 tuition is non-refundable beginning May 2, 2016. Please note: Your initial payment is applied towards the month of September. Cancellations requested for registrations submitted after May 2, 2016 have until August 5, 2016 to receive a full tuition refund less the non-refundable registration fee.

WHAT IS THE ENROLLMENT/WAITING LIST POLICY? Due to limited space, families may only register for one preschool section per child. The Edina Family Center strives to accommodate each family’s preference, but cannot guarantee preference placement. Once the preschool class that you are enrolled in begins its third week, families will be removed from other waiting lists in order to ensure enrollment opportunities for all families.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS CONTINUED WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T GET PLACED INTO MY FIRST CHOICE CLASS? The Edina Family Center strives to accommodate each family’s preference, but we cannot guarantee preference placement. Upon registration, you have the opportunity to list a second and third class choice. This option is listed in the Q&A section of our registration system. If you do indicate a second and/or third choice preference, and your first choice class is full, you will be enrolled in your second or third choice class, if space is available, and placed on the wait list for your first choice class. If you do not indicate a second or third choice in the system, and your first choice is full, you will remain on the wait list for your first choice class only.

IS THE FAMILY CENTER RATED BY PARENT AWARE? All of our preschool classrooms and preschool child care are rated the full four stars from Parent Aware. We are proud to use best statewide practices for preparing kids for Kindergarten.

WHEN DO CLASSES BEGIN AND END? Classes meet August, 2016 to June, 2017. Please see calendar on page 22 for further detail.

DO I HAVE TO IMMUNIZE MY CHILD? All students in the state of Minnesota must have their immunizations up-to-date. The state also requires schools must have a child’s immunization record prior to the child’s first day of school. See page 26 for immunization form.

DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BE TOILET TRAINED? Your child does not need to be toilet trained to attend our classes and programs.
