every class has a story. what’s yours ? Here in Edina Community Education, it’s often the unexpected stories and the connections that make our classes most interesting and most powerful. The class content is of course the starting point. A group of women meet each other at a 6:00am swimming class because they share an interest in swimming. But they are still swimming together eight years later because they discovered additional mutual interests over coffee one morning, and their friendships blossomed. A yoga participant realizes that the music she has stored up inside her would be a perfect accompaniment for the gentle, flowing movements and meditative breathing of her class. Her friend and yoga teacher encourages her to record that music, and share it with the class. The result is not only an appreciative local yoga community, but also a new career in composition and the international sales of her musical pieces. Throughout these pages, and every day throughout the halls of the Edina Community Center, you’ll find stories like these jumping off the page. All around us, energy is building, connections are being made. Join us! Don’t see your story written here? Can’t find the class you were looking for? Have an idea for a class you would like to teach? Let us know! As community educators, we are most successful when we listen and respond to what our particular community wants and needs. We are always looking for your class ideas and we are always encouraging new instructors to share their passions with our neighbors. Our catalog, our program, and our community aren’t complete without you. Don’t forget: we are proud to offer financial assistance for our classes when it is needed. global languages putting spanish to work around town Practicing Spanish in a classroom is one way to learn, but exploring Spanish language and culture out in our community brings those lessons to life! Last fall, four Spanish class participants met up with Spanish teacher Jenny Larson at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts to see an exhibition entitled “Young People’s Ofrendas: Expressions of Live & Remembrance.” On exhibit were ofrendas that students from four area high schools created and wrote about in the spirit of Día de los Muertos in order to honor people who have died. After looking at the ofrendas and reading about their components, the group enjoyed lunch together at Pancho Villa’s. What’s your next adventure?

Traditionally served at lunchtime in restaurants, private homes, businesses, and everywhere good food is appreciated, smorrebrod is a traditional open-faced sandwich served on rye bread. Learn to entertain the tongue by balancing a range of tastes from sweet, sour, salty, and bitter to umami (savory). Entice the eye with attention to color and detail. And learn about the special Danish ryebread that serves as its base. Leave fast food shops behind. Join us to experience the joy, the ease, the feeling of satiety of the New Nordic Kitchen. Instructor Annelise Grosblatt.

People from Denmark are the happiest people on earth. Could this be the reason why? Grab your sweetheart, young or old, and join us for a fun Valentine’s Day culinary adventure learning to cook Danish aebleskiver and Norwegian waffles. Danish aebleskiver (“apple slices”) are round pancakes, filled with a fruit jam of choice. Our special Norwegian waffles are tasty and delicious, served with jam and whipped cream or with a sweet brown Norwegian cheese and sour cream. We’ll complete our cozy, Scandinavian celebration with the ultimate Danish tradition: eating our aebleskiver and waffles while drinking Gloegg--a spicy hot drink mulled with spices, almonds and raisins (ours will be made with elderberry juice). Warm yourself with these treats around our cooking table and have fun socializing where everything and anything is possible. Instructor Annelise Grosblat.

WHAT IS AYURVEDA?

Ayurveda is steeped in ancient knowledge of balancing our bodies, minds and environments. The techniques used in Ayurvedic cooking can be applied to not only vegetarian or vegan cuisine, but also to meat, fish and other ethnic styles. Have you ever experienced the feeling of just eating a big meal, but still have a craving you can’t seem to satisfy? The concepts we learn in Ayurveda cooking can teach you to bring a satisfaction to the body by satisfying all six tastes your body craves, either within a specific meal or throughout the day. Join us to learn more!

Ayurvedic Cooking: What’s Your Dosha?

Ayurvedic Cooking: Boost Your Ojas

Ayurvedic Cooking: Cleanse for Renewal

Ayurveda, which means “Life Knowledge,” is the ancient science of yoga. Ayurveda cooking is the technique of using foods and spices to create rejuvenation, purification and balance within the body. In this class, we will learn about the three Doshas or energetic tendencies of your body, mind and spirit. You will also find out what your Dosha is: Vata, Pita or Kapha. With this knowledge, we will dive into the foods and spices that will both support and balance who you are, and what will bring you out of balance. Then we will get hands-on and learn how to use the spices to suit your needs: we’ll cook a Doshabalancing meal of vegetable korma, and end the class by sharing the meal. Note: this dish is vegetarian, but not vegan. Instructor Lisa Fecarotta.

Ayurveda cooking is the pathway to health, longevity and happiness. In this class, we will discover the medicinal properties of the spices we use in Ayurvedic cooking. We will learn about “Ojas,” the essential energy of the body, which can be equated with the “fluid of life.” In Ayurveda, we say that Ojas is the sap of one’s life energy which, when sufficient, is equated with immunity. In turn, when Ojas is deficient, it results in weakness, fatigue and ultimately disease. One food that will add to your “supply” of Ojas is ghee. We will prepare ghee and taste it on gluten-free chickpea Chapatti. You will also take a bit of the ghee home with you. Instructor Lisa Fecarotta.

Ayurvedic cooking can bring vitality to the whole being, strength to the immune system, and provide the means of support for the body to cleanse itself from unwanted toxins. March is the perfect time to look at renewing our bodies, minds and spirits. In this class, we will look at cleansing the body from Ayurvedic perspective. We will determine your Dosha and create a cleansing meal called Kitchari that will support all of the Doshas. You will then learn how to adjust Kitchari to support your Dosha when it is out of balance. We will also explore other Ayurvedic cleansing techniques that you can use at home. Instructor Lisa Fecarotta.

making music for motion Dr. Barbara Benn has been making music her whole life. She often wrote and arranged her own pieces, but it wasn’t until she began taking Joanne Gordon’s yoga classes 10+ years ago that she realized her music would be the perfect accompaniment for the gentle, glowing movements and meditative breathing of yoga. Joanne encouraged her to record a set of original music to use in her classes. The result was Barbara’s first CD, Lighter Than Air (2011), and her second, Balancing Act (2012). Her new CD will be released in 2015. Learn more: barbarabennmusic.com.

aquatics adult swim “You may get in slowly at 6:05am, but you get out energized, and feel so good the rest of the day!” They have been swimming together for over 8 years. They range in age from their 30s to 70s. Some have enjoyed competitive swim team careers, and others are new to the sport as a path to fitness. One woman in her 70s is working on her flip turn; another participant is working to bring strength back to a broken wrist. They support one another both in the water and at the coffee shop, where they gather once a week after their swim to celebrate their small victories. “We met because of a shared interest in swimming, but over coffee we realized that we have so many other interests in common. Our friendships have blossomed over the years.” Interested in joining this welcoming group? You can use our drop-in option. Questions? Call Kay at 952-848-3965.
