OCTOBER FORUM

WHAT’S EDINA READING?

Until It Hurts: America’s obsession with youth sports and how it harms our kids Speaker: Mark Hyman

Monday, October 13, 2014, 7-9PM South View Middle School Auditorium. Cost is FREE

ABOUT THE SPEAKER MARK HYMAN Over the last seventy-five years, adults have staged a hostile takeover of kids’ sports. In 2003 alone, more than 3.5 million children under age fifteen required medical treatment for sports injuries, nearly half of which were the result of simple overuse. The quest to turn children into tomorrow’s superstar athletes has often led adults to push them beyond physical and emotional limits. A longtime sports journalist and author, Mark Hyman’s recent writing examines the problematic state of youth sports and opens a muchneeded discussion among parents, coaches, athletic trainers, recreation professionals and others.

Looking for something new to read? This is your night! The Mayor of Edina and other notable community personalities will share what they have been reading and invite recommendations from the audience. Offer up your favorite titles and they will be included in a booklist that will be compiled of the evening’s suggestions and displayed in the library. An Edina Reads Program. Tuesday, October 14, 7-8:30 p.m. in the Fireside of the Edina Senior Center. Sponsored by the Friends of the Edina Library, Edina Community Foundation, Edina Senior Center, Friends of the Hennepin County Library, Edina High School, Edina Community Education and Edina Resource Center, and Edina League of Women Voters.

Members of our Accelerated Spanish class have been meeting regularly over the summer to keep up their Spanish conversation skills. While opportunities to develop fluency in Spanish abound within and around our community, many members of this group have very particular reasons for continuing their journey with the Spanish language. Joe Wright volunteers annually as an onsite translator for US medical teams in Antigua, Guatemala, interfacing with local staff, patients and their families before and after medical procedures. Ann Bergstad volunteers at The Ronald McDonald House school, helping the classroom teacher. Often there are students from Spanish-speaking countries who know very little English when they arrive (usually the siblings of transplant patients). Ann is able to help them with classroom subjects. “These students are ever so grateful to have a helper who understands them, and it is such a pleasure for me,” she says. As an introduction to a current exhibit at The Museum of Russian Art, “The Forest and Folk Art: Russian Traditions in Wood,” this presentation will discuss how Russians have used wood in everyday life in practical, decorative, and artistic ways. Folk arts, especially those from the 19th and early 20th century, have creatively enriched ordinary life. The forests provided food and timber for tools and crafts. Those who attend the lecture can sign up for a tour of the exhibit itself at The Museum of Russian Art on Wednesday, October 15th at 10:30am. Additional cost for the museum tour is $9 for adults and $7 for seniors. Instructor Carol Veldman Rudie. 8014-F01 1 Session - $10 Monday, Oct 13 10:00 - 11:30 am Edina Community Center 351

Taiwanese Movie Night: Night Market Hero

A “night market” is unique to Taiwanese culture—an evening carnival of food, shopping and community. Join us for a screening of “Night Market Hero,” a 2001 film depicting vendor rivalries, unspoken romances and disputes over trivial matters that unfold, while vendors work to sell their tasty delicacies. Things come to a screeching halt for the vendors when they learn of a real estate company (in cahoots with local politicians) planning to take over the land. Now that their very livelihoods are at stake, can the vendors work together to fight off the developers? The film is spoken in Chinese with English subtitles. Following the movie, stay for a Q&A discussion that will further explore Taiwanese culture. Instructor Chun-Yang Huang. 8082-F01 1 Session - $10 Monday, Sep 8 7:00-9:30 pm Edina Community Center 351

Monuments Men & the American Museum: Issues in WWII-era Art Looting This course will use the recent movie “The Monuments Men” as a springboard for discussing the complex issues surrounding artworks in WWII-era Europe. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts owns several works which were affected by looting, forced sales, and the destruction of modern art, deemed “degenerate” by the Nazis. Provenance research, or the study of ownership of a work of art, is an essential part of museum work, and we’ll look at several case studies featuring artworks in the MIA. The Monuments Men were the largely unknown “soldiers” -- museum curators, conservators, architects, painters and sculptors -- who served in the Western Allied military effort and were tasked with the responsibility of mitigating damage to important monuments and of locating and returning stolen works of art. In his 2014 film “The Monuments Men,” based on the non-fiction book by Robert Edsel, George Clooney celebrates these heroes and lifts up a number of ethical questions about art and war. Is fighting for art worth risking one’s life? What are the responsibilities of art museums in times of war? Who owns art? Join us for a viewing of this twohour movie and a discussion afterwards. Instructor Natalie Cramer. 7073-F01 Tuesday, Oct 14 Edina Community Center

When the old Edina High School (Edina East) closed in May 1981, a group of community leaders convened to determine how best to use the space for the benefit of the community. What to do with the old high school woodshop, holdover from the years when shop class was a regular part of Edina schools curriculum, was a no-brainer. This solid old space, with heavy-duty woodworking equipment (much of it Navy surplus purchased inexpensively at the end of WWII), was opened for community use in 1982.

We learned professional cooking techniques, a little about the restaurant business, and something about life in Russia today” said a recent participant.

Alzheimer’s: Know the 10 Signs

The number of people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is increasing at a rapid rate. One in nine people over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s and about one-third of people over 85 have the disease. In 2014, Edina was one of 12 communities awarded an ACT on Alzheimer’s grant to become more “dementia friendly” and work to improve the lives of residents touched by Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. The Edina Resource Center (a program of Edina Community Education) has partnered with Normandale Center for Healing and Wholeness to bring you this free series of classes. All are facilitated by the Alzheimer’s Association of Minnesota-North Dakota. Classes are free but please register.

The warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease are often dismissed as side effects of normal aging. Early detection gives you a chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies, and plan for the future. Hear from people who have the disease and find out how to recognize the signs in yourself and others. Please Pre-register. 2001-F01 1 Session - FREE Tuesday, Sep 23 6:00 - 7:30 pm Edina Community Center 351 2001-F02 1 Session - FREE Thursday, Sep 25 1:00 - 2:30 pm Edina Community Center 351

Beginner/Intermediate Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a set of universal principles that summarize the rules governing things of change in this world. These rules are a reflection of intimate human experiences and knowledge about human conditions accumulated over the past 5,000 years. Tai Chi teaches the duality nature of how to make desired changes by simply following the universal rules in a natural way. Tai Chi exercises were created based on these theories and have been proven to help reduce stress, improve balance, increase energy level and build or recover good health, which ultimately lead to quality life and longevity. Whether you are a beginner or a long-time practitioner, join us to gain essential insights into the world of Tai Chi and establish a proper foundation for an enlightening and transforming lifelong practice. We will explore how to obtain deeper relaxation and achieve true body and mind integration.
