the chill factor

Designed ads and modeled makeup (don’t miss pages 10 and 11!). Makes the most amazing sea salt caramels on the planet, according to co-workers).

$ AS A CARD-CARRYING HIGH HEEL WEARER FOR OVER A DECADE, I tend to mourn the loss of warm weather and the more practical clothing options that winter necessitates. I turn up my nose at Jack Frost and refuse to acknowledge socks or scarves. I take up residence in front of a high-powered heater. Then, after the first snow when the slush seeps into my pumps and freezes my feet, I begrudgingly open my closet and dig out last years boots. I zip them up and walk around a bit. Huh. This is nice. REALLY nice. I stride into the office with a spring in my step, go to the store without having to slip into a pair of flats first, and forget to remove the boots until it’s time for sleep. Before I know it, I’m pouring over the fashion blogs and Pinterest for the latest trends in boots, hats, coats, gloves, and scarves. There’s something about the coziness of the cold-weather months, mixed with the holiday spirit, that makes me feel even better about life. Indulge a little – after all, we live in a place where cooler temps dominate the calendar. Take it up a notch even, and you might find your outlook stays bright until spring. Dive into this edition of Edge, and you’ll get excited about the upcoming season, too. From ideas for the home and for food, to ways to get ready for these months of dressy events and parties, we’ve got you covered. And be sure to flip the magazine over for the Edge-ified business side of life. - Lori Pederson, Edge creative director

ANTIQUE A MIRROR PRESENTED BY BOXWOODS photographed by wandering albatross photography

step 1

step 3

Here's What You'll Need Mirror (any type or shape you prefer as long as you can access the painted back) Antique Mirror Stripper (available at Boxwoods) Antique Mirror Solution (available at Boxwoods)

step 5

ready, set, diy Generously brush antique mirror stripper onto the painted back side of your mirror. Allow to sit for at least 30 minutes and up to 24 hours. The paint will bubble as it releases. In the sink, gently rinse the released paint and remaining solution off of the mirror back. The silver layer is now exposed. Use care when handling, as silver is fragile and will scratch easily. Using a soft, clean white rag, generously dab antique mirror solution onto the exposed silver layer, covering the entire surface. The silver will begin to oxidize. Keeping an eye on the progress, allow the solution to sit on the silver for 5-20 minutes until the desired degree of antiquing is achieved. *Note: Some mirrors made in China will take much longer to oxidize than the recommended time. Leave the solution as long as necessary until your mirror reaches the desired degree of oxidization. Rinse in the sink to stop the oxidization process. After the antiqued silver layer is dry, coat the entire surface with a protective layer of black or gray paint.

important tips & tricks $ Work in an area with good ventilation. $ Cover your workspace in newspaper for easy clean up. Clean, soft white rags

$ To add a golden hue to the antiquing, lightly spray gold metallic spray paint over the oxidized silver before coating the entire back with a layer of black or gray paint.

$ For step 3, experiment with different oxidization patterns by using a toothbrush or spray Paint brush Black, gray or gold paint

bottle to spread the antique mirror solution over the exposed silver layer.

$ Every mirror will be a little different so don’t stress if the stripping or oxidization processes take longer or happen more quickly than the recommended time.

$ Don’t worry if you get paint on the front side of the mirror. Simply let it dry then scrape it off. WIN TE R 201 2–201 3 • E DG E/O N T REN D

featured interior

Luxury worth living in This issue’s featured interior is full of warm texture and rustic elegance. The homeowner, Terre Hogan, began with a neutral palette incorporating rustic stone and exposed timber then added eclectic layers of rich, durable fabrics and textures. Then she added lots of light and comfortable seating to make it a welcoming space. The result is a room that’s luxurious to lounge in and completely family friendly. photographed by wandering albatross photography 6

love the look? Here are some tips to create a similar aesthetic: >> Before the decor, start with a neutral base. That way, you’ll have the freedom to change the colors and accessories in the future. >> The luxury lies in the layers. Begin with a minimum of 3-4 textures by adding an intricate area rug, inviting patterned pillows or interesting upholstery. >> For an extra inviting feel, focus on warm tones like red, gold and brown. >> When adding accessories, make sure to include a few larger statement pieces to draw the eye. Just as with the pillows and upholstery, create interest with varying hues and finishes. >> Make it personal. Don’t be afraid to incorporate pieces that carry a special meaning for you such as interesting treasures acquired on travels, family heirlooms or artwork that inspires you.

the conVERSION of a reluctant recycler e Ed g

b We

It’s been a few months and my new can recycling process is now part of my daily routine. My husband has even taken to picking up cans he finds laying on the ground while he is out and about. I am proud to say we are a recycling family! As my journey into the world of recycling continues on, I set my ‘reuse’ target on my parents, specifically, my father. My father is a wine connoisseur of sorts, not so much the wear khaki pants and talk about complimentary cheeses while trying to keep your perfectly pressed polo shirt white kind of way; he has a more rudimentary appreciation for the craft of wine making. And so, especially during the winter months, you will generally find him working on his latest concoction upstairs in the bathroom. Why the bathroom you ask? I did too. And to that my father simply replies, “Because that is the only room in the house I can keep a consistent temperature.” Now what does that all have to

m

do with recycling? Glass bottles, and a lot of them. When my father first started making wine he in no short order told every human being he knew to give him their empty wine bottles. And they responded. Coupled with his love for tasting different wines, he has a plethora of glass containers to say the least. Way more than he would ever need to bottle his unique bathroom blends. When I asked my father about recycling his glass, his story was very familiar. He doesn’t recycle glass for the same reason I didn’t recycle cans, it just didn’t fit into his daily routine. He even expressed the same feelings of guilt for not recycling that led me to start my journey in the first place and was very open to me researching and implementing a plan for him.

reduce Drink boxed wine? Not likely.

reuse My mother owns a stained glass store and has found that wine bottles that

have been kiln-fired flat make great cheese plates, however since the market for cheese plates in Helena is limited, that has only put a very small dent in the glass waste.

recyCle The road to recycling glass in Montana is long and full of pot-holes. Any glass to be recycled in Helena has to be shipped out and, due to the weight of the product, the cost to ship glass to a glass recycling facility would exceed any return in payment for the glass. Simply put, it costs more to recycle the glass than it is worth. So the decision remains: to recycle or not to recycle? While it is easy for me to find logic in almost any situation, I find this one difficult. I know glass won’t decompose, so throwing it away is not the best option. It also seems as if anything that isn’t making somebody somewhere money has inherent roadblocks. But the right path is usually not the easiest, so recycling it is.

Since glass is a non-compactible item, it is much more difficult to create a space for collection. What about different colors of glass? What about the labels? Do I have to clean out the jars or can I just toss them in a bin? How do I find the answers to all these questions!? Depending on what recycled glass is used for in that area, it may be necessary to separate glass by color. Lucky for us, the Helena area isn’t one of them. You don’t even have to remove the labels. They would like the containers rinsed, but nobody checks to see if you don’t. You may, however, decide that rinsing the containers keeps your home or garage smelling a bit fresher. So for my folks, the solution is a recycle bin placed right outside the door on the back deck. Rarely used for recreation, just home to the grill. The bin is smaller, so it will need to be emptied often. Since the recycle drop-off is on my mom’s way to work, she has volunteered to be the official bin emptier.

dress-it-up tips for the

modern man " A man should look as if he bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them." – Hardy Amies

12

1

2

3

You’ll never go wrong with a two-button suit with a narrow lapel. If you can’t cup your hands under the jacket’s hem, then it’s too long.

Follow the seasons: cotton suit in summer, tweeds, flannels, and corduroys in winter.

Keep your tie bold and classy, and two inches wide for an ultra modern look. The tip should end at your beltline – no longer, no shorter.

6

5

4

Keep your shirts trim, slim, and shorter than you think. When in doubt, go with a semi-spread collar.

Know what size you wear. Measure. Really. Fitted dress shirts are best even if you aren’t as fit as you’d like to be.

Your belt should always match the shoes. If your pants fit well, going out sans belt is perfectly acceptable.

7

8

9

Find a tailor. Spend a little extra (on sleeves, cuffs, body, and pants alterations) to make a $100 suit go the distance of a $1000 one.

Cuffs are like the frame on a painting. Let a little sleeve show through as a finishing touch. It also lengthens the look of your arms.

Never underestimate the power of the accessory, visible or not. Collar stays, a classic watch, and a handkerchief will pull the look together.

NORA NEELY NATURAL NOSHING BLOG

WINTER wine Winter brings on heavier types of food and inadvertently heavier wines. The popular foods tend to lean towards meat and potatoes, along with Italian and Hungarian (pastas and sausage). People tend to lean away from Shiraz which is more of a summer red. Very popular are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The happening trend these days is a blend of all three. The traditional European name for this is Bordeaux; the Americanized version is called Meritage (so it doesn’t infringe on the French regions legally protected origin). Try an Italian variety - Sangiovese: It contains a high acidity and moderated alcohol makes it very food friendly. Herb seasonings such as basil, thyme and sage play well with the notes of the grapes. Montepulciano has moderate acidity and a more noticeable alcohol level. Chiantis have medium-high acidity. They go well with red sauced Italian foods, beef, lamb and game. For white wines, winter makes us lean towards creamier, softer stylized white wines instead of the crisp light fruits. The heavier fruits are pears and apples, referred to as the stone fruits. This is very popular in Chardonnays which go well with those heavier cream and butter dishes.

Directions

Ingredients

1) To make crust, turn oven to 350F and line with parchment paper or grease a loaf pan.

Shortbread Crust

2) Mix crust ingredients in a medium sized bowl until combined.

2 c. blanched almond flour

3) Press into prepared pan and bake for 15 minutes or until the crust starts to turn brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

3 Tbsp coconut oil, melted

4) For the filling: In a small-medium sized pot, mix together the coconut oil, coconut butter, maple syrup and extracts.

coconut palm sugar

5) Bring pot up to a boil and simmer for about 5 minutes, whisking it frequently. (The coconut oil and sweeteners will not mix very much as one is polar and the other is not. Don’t worry as the nut milk slurry will act as an emulsifier.)

dash of salt

2 Tbsp xylitol, powdered or 1/4 tsp xanthan gum

6) Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. (I stuck mine in the fridge for 10 – 15 minutes, giving it the occasional stir to prevent any coconut oil from hardening.)

Pecan Filling

7) Meanwhile, toast the pecans in a pan on medium heat for about 5–8 minutes or until they smell like roasted pecans, stirring frequently. Once toasted, remove from heat and sprinkle with salt.

1/4 cup maple syrup

8) In a small bowl, mix together the flaxseed meal, tapioca starch and nut milk. Let it sit for a few minutes.

2 Tbsp coconut oil

9) Once the sugar-oil mixture is cooler, whisk in the nut milk mixture until combined and smooth.

1/4 tsp maple extract, optional

1 cup chopped pecans 1 1/2 Tbsp coconut butter 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1 Tbsp flaxseed meal

10) Mix in the chopped pecans and mix until combined. Pour onto the cooled shortbread and distribute evenly.

1/2 tsp arrowroot starch

11) Bake at 350F for about 20 minutes or until the filling begins to set and loses its shine. Remove from oven and place on cooling rack. 12) Before serving, chill in the fridge for at least an hour – the colder they are, the easier they are to cut and serve!

(could use tapioca starch too) 1 Tbsp nut milk (or whatever kind of milk you want) Sea salt for pecans
