cheers to more giving than taking welcome to edge/in demand

$ Coinciding with the season, this issue’s attention is on giving, but put the bells away Santa, we aren’t talking necessarily about the holidays. Of course we cover the annual challenge of the perfect Christmas or end-ofyear thank you gift for your clients and employees. But what about some of the nonconventional ways of giving, like paying for the person in line behind you at the drive through? Or giving the gift of a day of productive work so maybe your employees can spend an evening or weekend relaxing, knowing they got everything they needed to get done finished. How about the gift of a little social media etiquette during a time where our Facebook home screens are packed with every amazing deal that will be sold out in just seconds! The point is, giving doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, and sometimes it will cost nothing at all or even make

you money. And giving certainly doesn’t have to only happen when it is cold out and the only activity that doesn’t involve rosy cheeks and a runny nose is the mall or amazon.com. Just giving a little appreciation to your fellow man through a random act of kindness or even just a little consideration compounds exponentially and, before you know it, you have impacted more lives than the latest viral video on YouTube. And, odds are, a free grande, skinny, sugar-free, chocolate, caramel mocha is going to result in a bigger, longer-lasting smile than a wiener dog that can bark Jingle Bells. And speaking of dogs, make sure you flip over the magazine, and let us help you get excited about getting those winter boots out of the closet with the help of some of our friends at the Lewis & Clark Humane Society. - Deanna Satre, Edge Webmaster

Give Little but Give Big My friend Vanessa is about to leave for a month in Vietnam, where she will help disabled children in schools and community centers. I’ve had friends who have spent weeks and months and years making differences in lives where they are the most needed here and there across the world. Helping out at relief camps or making effective donations are just not in the schedule or the budget for most of us. Universal problems like poverty, hunger, and disease are overwhelming and expensive, and I usually have to scramble just to make it to work and keep my life together. Fortunately, I can still give where it is most needed – because the needs in front of me every day are there for a reason. I worked with Vanessa for a year as a social worker. The cool thing about Vanessa is that she doesn’t need to be across the world to make a difference. She blooms wherever she is planted. It was only too easy to let the negative aspects of the work seep into my attitude, but she was sunshine in the cubicles with her kindness and sense of fun. Workdays with Vanessa were motivated, efficient, and positive. The people we helped couldn’t help but feel the ripple.

Look at a Tree

Instead of seeing a forest, look a tree. Look at an overwhelming problem like social injustice, poverty, hunger or disease through the lens of the life of the person right in front of you. You can be the one positive relationship in that person’s life. You can begin to make a positive impact by changing one day. Julie Moore, an account executive at KMTX Radio here in Helena, decided that there was no better way to make her 40th birthday memorable than to celebrate it with 40 random acts of kindness. She treated a homeless lady to breakfast. She left a gift card at Starbucks to cover the order of the next customer. Julie and her friend Lea spent the day bringing roses to elderly shut-ins, feeding expired parking meters and leaving uplifting notes on cars. “You’ve been hit with a random act of kindness,” the notes said. “It was one of the best days of my whole life,” she said. “Thinking back on the day reminds me how easy it is to do something kind for people. Anywhere you go, there will be someone who needs a hand. Whether it is opening the door for someone at the store or putting away someone’s grocery cart, it's easy when you just keep your head up and pay attention.”

THE WORLD BECOMES A BETTER PLACE

Think about it. A cup of coffee and a kind word for the person right in front of you can actually be the start that changes a life. That person might do the same to the next person in her life. How is that person going to change? Who are they going to be now that they have found out that a stranger is actually a friend? Who will they go on to help now? Change is exponential.

Pay It Forward

That's the concept of “paying it forward” in a nutshell. Do a friend or a stranger a favor, but don’t allow them to repay or to even owe you one. Instead, ask your new friend to pass that kindness on to someone else. And if someone gives you an unexpected break, do a good turn for a third person. Benjamin Franklin picked up this time-honored notion from Greek philosophy and called it a “trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money.” The idea grew from there, and has now been organized into the global foundation known as Pay It Forward. Give what you can afford, but make your gift exponential. Be a link in the chain of kindness. Pay it forward.

CHANGE IS GOOD

Link In Julie found the idea for her give fest on a friend’s Pinterest page. She connected her inner inspiration to her social media world by using her networks creatively and purposefully. With a little keyword strategy, you can make your homepage a place to share encouragement and to be inspired, and you can connect to others on the chain of paying it forward through Facebook, Pinterest, and through the website of the Pay It Forward Global Experience at www.pifexperience.com.

Use Your Change…For Change The great thing about Julie and Vanessa is that they are dreamers but they are practical. Julie used the spare change in her car to feed expired parking meters. Vanessa sent inspiring messages to her coworkers and met workday challenges with a smile. Use your own everyday opportunities like Pinterest, Starbucks, and spare change to accomplish your inspiration. Keep it practical to make it real – but be the change you wish to see in the world.

How to Make Work Happen

at work THE PROBLEMS

Today’s workplaces, specifically offices, have everything an employee could ever need to get the job done, except quiet time to do it. Staff is usually structured to tackle projects as a team. Working in a team requires communication that removes the creative mind from “the zone.” Proximity: A quick cubicle visit or tap on the shoulder pulls the victim out of their creative mode (“the zone”). That quick question you had will now be over discussed and could dissolve into an OADD moment, Office Attention Deficit Disorder. Next thing you know, you are talking about what you had for dinner last night, what you are doing this weekend, what you did last weekend, your dog’s new trick, and the cleaner you have coming in to clean up after it. Meetings: Meetings are the worst offender. A one-hour meeting with five employees doesn’t kill one hour, it kills five hours of productivity, probably more considering that more than one person was deep in problem-solving thought when meeting time came. Now they have to get their train of thought back on the rails, all because the manager wanted to convey a message that could have been just as easily done in an email. Social Media?: The unenlightened manager will tell you that Facebook, Twitter, and other social media hinder workplace productivity. They will even go as far as blocking access to these sites. Engaging in social media sporadically throughout the day is like a modern day smoke break. It is a voluntary interruption. The employee takes a break when they are at a good mental place to do so, a place that won’t take 20 minutes to get back into.

So the pattern we see now is employees who go anywhere but the office to get work done: home, the coffee shop, the library, or they just come in very early, very late or on the weekends when nobody else is around. As business owners and managers, wouldn’t we rather our employees use the equipment, furniture, and software we invested in?

THE SOLUTIONS

The best way to make an office into a better, more productive place to get work done is by reducing the involuntary distractions, like interruptions from co-workers, managers, and meetings. Most of us have Casual Friday in our office. How about No Talk Thursday? A day where nobody can talk, to anyone, at all. Such an extreme will make it very obvious how much work is lost due to a “normal” work day. You will find that your employees will even look forward to it. Train your management and staff to use more passive forms of communication, like email or instant message. Passive forms of communication allow the person on the receiving end to reply when they are at a good point to do so. These passive forms of communication are also less likely to break down into an OADD moment. Use project management tools and shared documents. If you Google ‘project management software,’ you get about 239 million results. Odds are, if you focus your search by industry, there will be a project management system out there that will fit your business perfectly. Instruct your team to leave detailed notes when they use the tool so if someone has a question, they will most likely find their answer there. Tracking things like sales in a Google shared spreadsheet is a great way to keep sales staff and managers up to speed on sales and goals. Think twice before scheduling a meeting. Does everyone really need to be there? Could you just send an email instead? And to all those micro-managers out there, loosen the reins a little on your team – they will run faster.

3 reasons Small Businesses Should/Shouldn’t Upgrade To Windows 8 PRO: unified experience across devices Microsoft claims that Windows 8 will offer a “no-compromise” experience across all devices. Tablets running Windows 8 will offer the same functionality as the PC and with Skydrive, Microsoft’s version of the cloud, sharing information across devices will be effortless. Windows 8 phones, when available, will integrate seamlessly with the personal device network making work on-the-go much more productive.

$

PRO: Improved Security Protocols Secure Boot is a huge improvement, as it only allows booting of operating systems components that have been digitally signed by the software vendor. This will effectively eliminate malware from installing. Combined with the improved Windows Defender and Bitlocker, devices running Windows 8 will keep confidential client information out of the clutches of evil. Windows 8 will also offer “Windows To Go,” a fully managed Windows 8 on a USB drive. This will be a

$

step in the right direction for businesses, offering a secured corporate environment that will automatically connect to your network. PRO: Runs On Existing equipment Businesses will not have to worry about investing in expensive new computers to use Windows 8, as it has been made to run on a wide range of systems. Windows 8 was designed to work on systems meeting requirements of Windows 7, and even older systems should be able to run it smoothly. Also, due to the efficient memory usage, power consumption in Windows 8 is much less than previous versions.

$

CON: Merging the Personal with the Professional Windows 8 is great for work and play, but that may not be a good thing for all businesses. Considering that the new Windows 8-style start screen is designed with casual users in mind, live tiles may prove counterproductive for corporate work, distracting workers to use apps and other social media platforms.

$

coN: User-friendly on a desktop PC? Let’s face the fact: most businesses are not going to move to touch-based systems anytime soon. And Windows 8 will not force that change either. Windows 8 was designed with touch clearly in mind, and hence it performs awkwardly on a traditional desktop. Using your mouse to “slide” apps around and having to switch between desktop and “metro” screens constantly will be a gigantic pain. There will also be costs incurred training employees to find their way around Windows 8, which many businesses will feel would not be worth the investment.

$

coN: Windows RT devices not enterprise-ready Microsoft’s Surface tablet is not yet running Windows 8. It is actually running Windows RT, which only offers a subset of services offered by Windows 8 and limited apps. However, Microsoft is set to release the Surface version running the Windows 8 Pro OS in January 2013 that should allow for more flexible usage.

edge financial series: money management

Online Financial Tools

Does the idea of implementing a personal budget sound restrictive and far from fun? Does the thought of tracking your purchases seem daunting? The experts will tell you that these steps are actually incredibly freeing and will give you peace of mind. Don’t believe them? See how three separate experiences from the Edge team will turn you into a believer.

Name: Lori Pederson Job: Creative Director/Owner Tool: www.budgetsimple.com

Name: Darla Oropeza Job: Graphic Designer Tool: www.waveaccounting.com

Name: Deanna Satre Job: Webmaster/Owner Tool: self-created online register

Story: “Until this past year, I had never set a budget or really looked closely at my monthly bills. My only debt was students loans, I paid all my bills on time, and I never, ever paid a monthly fee on my credit cards. Then why wasn’t I saving much, and why did I feel so anxious? After a year of nearly uninhibited spending in preparation for my wedding in August 2011, and followed by a Christmas full of travel and gifts, I decided it was finally time to regain control, mainly psychologically, of my finances. I found the free online tracker www.budgetsimple.com, spent a month tracking, and then moved forward with a budget and haven’t looked back. The site is simple and soothing, and making an effort to track expenses daily has removed a giant stress.”

Story: “I needed a software program that would not only track my personal income and expenses, but could also be set up for keeping track of my ‘hobby,’ selling homemade cookies and caramels throughout the year. What I love about www.waveaccounting.com is the ability I have to work on both of my budgets on one login. I can switch back and forth between the business tracking and the personal tracking with a click of a button. The software is completely free (there aren’t even any upgrades to buy!), and the biggest advantage is that it links directly to my bank and credit card accounts so I don’t have to manually enter any numbers. Life saver! It’s very use-friendly, simple to learn, and has all the reports you need at the click of a button.”

Story: “As a left-brained numbers person who tends to be a bit of a doit-yourselfer, when I started to see the need for some sort of financial tool, I took matters into my own hands and coded it myself. Kind of a nerdy thing to do, I know, but I knew exactly the information I wanted to manage – no more, no less. My Online Checkbook Register functions just as a regular checkbook register while tracking spending by family member. It also has a quick balance feature. I recently had to modify the program for multiple families because when I would show my family members the program, they wanted it too. They have told me that I should make a business out of it, but I will just keep it as a perk to being friends with me.”
