FALL 2020

MISSION STATEMENT Florence Crittenton provides innovative, comprehensive services and nurturing programs that engage and empower children, young adults and young families to thrive and build productive lives.

OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS Sarah Corbally, President Ron Waterman, Vice President Jim Carney, Treasurer Lisa Nelson, Secretary Amy Deitchler Collette Hanson Creeana Rygg Danielle Waddell Jamie Wood-McCullough

WHO WE ARE Florence Crittenton is a leader in family-centered treatment and services. We provide effective intervention and prevention services to families of young children. With the support of partners like you, Florence Crittenton offers a comprehensive array of services, including therapeutic residential care, home visiting, community parenting classes, outpatient treatment services for mental health and substance use disorders, and early education and childcare opportunities for children 0-5.

Fall Greetings! I hope this newsletter finds you and your family safe and healthy as we continue to navigate these uncertain times. While there is so much strife in this world dividing us, I think there is one thing that we can all unite around‌connection. Humans are built on connection with other humans. It is in our DNA; I guess you could say it’s in our bones. Connection with each other can guide us through our darkest hours, through terrible trauma, and can build resiliency. It is the terrible irony of these challenging times that the one thing we need right now to get us through is the one thing that seems to be the most elusive. I have thought a lot over the past 7 months about how the loss or lack of connection has affected the lives of the families we humbly serve. How do you get through your darkest hour when you may not have a connection to others? How do you build meaningful and lasting connections as you rebuild your life and create a new one for your child? In the following pages you will hear from families you have built these connections through their time with Florence Crittenton. These connections come from our staff of course, but maybe even more powerful, are the connections these families build with each other. Connection comes through sharing real experiences, and community is built by those that band together when the road is rough. As always, I am honored to be part of an organization that provides these opportunities for healing, connection, community, and growth to families that so greatly deserve it. We are honored to be part of their story and we are so grateful that you are a part of it with us. May this fall and the Holiday Season bring you the connections you deserve to find joy and continue your story. And may we all come together to build a strong community to last for generations. With Gratitude,

Carrie Krepps, Executive Director Welcome To Our Newest Board Member! We are thrilled to welcome Creeana Rygg to our Board of Directors. JENNIFER’S STORY I moved to Florence Crittenton’s Recovery Home in 2019 with my 2 children, Rowynn my baby daughter and Aiden my 18 month old son. Before I came to Florence Crittenton my life had been very tough. I grew up in Deer Lodge and mostly stayed with my grandma because my mother was in and out of my life, had a lot of boyfriends and drug use and my father was in jail for the first 10 years of my life. My life was really difficult, I had 5 children and one of them was killed in a terrible accident that despite not being my fault I blamed myself for and it tore me apart. I spent some time in prison, I relinquished my rights to my children and voluntarily decided to make closed adoption plans. My daughters death was heart breaking and triggered my drug use. I didn’t want to feel those feelings. I ended up living in a trap house using meth and pregnant with my daughter. My daughter was born and thankfully tested negative for any drugs as I was clean for most of my pregnancy but I was worried because I had used heavily at the beginning. I knew I had to find somewhere to go, I was desperate to be a sober role model for my kids. Child Protective Services wanted to take my kids away but I fought for them. Something just clicked that I had to change my life, my kids needed me and I knew the life I was leading was going to kill me. I had had guns in my face and been in some horrific situations but I wanted to change for myself and my kids sakes so badly. By the grace of God my charges were dropped and after my Chemical Dependency evaluation I was able to move into Florence Crittenton’s new Recovery Home. I had tried a treatment program before but only lasted a week. This time was different, I was older and ready. I stayed there for 14 months and stayed clean and sober for my entire time. I met my best friend who was also in the program and we are still very close today. I attended individual and group therapy and addictions counseling and every parenting class that was available and it helped me realize the pieces of my childhood that I missed out on and how I am determined to do better for my kids. I worked really hard and the structure was helpful and very necessary… but it was not easy. The most important thing was that Florence Crittenton’s medical director helped stabilize my mental health which helped me be able to raise my kids. I truly think he saved my life. I love that man. I have a huge supportive team of people in my life including case managers, floor staff, therapists and people that have helped me with my children. Now that I have discharged I still come back to have therapy and case management which has been helpful as I transition to living independently. I was so touched when some of my team were able to attend my graduation of drug treatment court recently. I know life is going to continue to be difficult at times but now I know how to handle the ups and downs in a healthy way. I have worked too hard to lose my kids and I will never risk that happening. I feel like I am on my 9th life and I need to take care of it. I am now working in Helena and supporting my family and co parenting with my boyfriend. We attend couples therapy and continue to work on strengthening our relationship. I am determined to stay sober and have the happy family that I never had. I am so grateful for everything Florence Crittenton has done for me and my kids. I have no doubt I would be dead in a ditch if it wasn’t for the help they gave me. I am so thankful, so grateful, so appreciative. You saved me, you saved my kids. I’m still doing great because I really want it and I really want to be a great mom to my kids. This program works, it’s hard but if you stick with it it’s 100% worth it. I feel like Florence Crittenton’s recovery home opening right at the time when I needed it was my miracle. You were there when I needed you. My glimmer of hope when I was about to lose everything. Thank you. Note: Jennifer gave her permission to use hers and her children’s name and photo and proudly shares her story.

FALL 2020

YOUR SUPPORT do i have a problem? The current Covid 19 situation has triggered stress and anxiety in many of us and with that the need to rely more on our coping mechanisms. Some are wondering if they are going to need weight watchers, AA, or both at the end of this pandemic! Joking aside, what are the indicators that you may have a problem that needs addressing? The Diagnostic Criteria for Substance Use Disorder (SUD) uses the following questions to assess reliance or use of a particular substance: 1. Is the substance being taken in larger amounts and/or over a longer period of time than intended? 2. Have there been attempts or unsuccessful efforts made to cut down or control substance use? 3. Is there a significant amount of time spent in activities to obtain the substance, use the substance, and/or recovering from the effects of the substance? 4. Are you craving or having a strong desire to use substances? 5. Are you continuing to use substances resulting in a failure to fulfill major roles/expectations in school, work, or at home? 6. Are you continuing substance use despite persistent or reoccurring social and/or personal problems? 7. Have important activities been given up or reduced because of substance use? 8. Are you using substances even when it is physically hazardous? 9. Is your substance use is continued despite having physical or psychological issues as a result of substance use? 10. Do you experience either increased or decreased tolerance for substance use? 11. Have you experienced either withdrawal symptoms and/or continue to use substances to avoid withdrawal symptoms? If you answered yes to 2-3 questions you may be experiencing mild SUD, 4-5 is moderate and 6+ can equate to a severe disorder. It is important to keep in mind that substance use disorder is a disease that affects a person’s brain and behavior, and leads to an inability to control the use of a drug or medication. When you’re addicted, you may continue using the drug despite the harm it causes. If you are struggling with a potential addiction, it’s important that you seek help. Licensed Addictions Counselors are trained to recognize and help people manage these challenges. They can offer individual, group and family therapy that addresses the complexities of a substance use disorder. There are daily AA meetings in most towns and parenting classes like Nurturing Parenting that are specifically designed for parents struggling with substance use. Regardless of the reasons for your concerns or the circumstances that may have led to any type of potential substance abuse, the bravest thing you can do is to ask for help. Many people struggling with addictions feel guilt, loneliness and hopelessness. You are not alone, so make that first step today towards the start of your journey to recovery. This information is not meant to be used as a diagnostic tool. If you are concerned about a potential substance use disorder please seek professional assistance for diagnosis and treatment.

AT WORK what a difference a year makes! The Recovery Home at Florence Crittenton is a place where women aged 18 – 30 and their children can find respite, support and addiction treatment in safe and caring place. We strongly believe that, where possible, children should accompany parents while receiving treatment and that a strong emphasis on trauma informed care is key to healing and recovery. Now in its second year, we have seen how effective this model of recovery can be for families. We’ve been able to demonstrate how important human connection is as women rebuild their lives, particularly as they transition back into the community and continue to receive support not just from our staff but from their peers with whom they often build close friendships. In addition, we have documented that the length of a woman’s stay at the recovery home has a direct correlation to how successful she is with her recovery journey. The longer the stay, the better the outcomes. This is because recovery relies on relationships, and relationships take time to develop. We are proud to be able to say that of the women living in the Recovery Home in 2020, 100% of them have left having successfully completing their recovery plan and goals. Additionally, while 100% of them came to Florence Crittenton without custody of their child(ren), 100% had regained custody at discharged. In addition, 100% of Recovery Home clients moved successfully into an independent living situation. This is a testament to the connection a mother has to her child, and how children are a powerful motivator for change. The human connections between a mother and child, between the residents themselves, and between the staff and residents are powerful. We as humans are so reliant on connection, and at Florence Crittenton we work hard to build connections, knowing they play a critical role in our clients achieving their goals. Each day we see living proof that every individual is one caring adult away from being a success. Florence Crittenton provides an army of caring adults for the families in our care, helping them heal, learn and have the courage they need to tackle their recovery journey. Thank you for your connection to this work – it truly does not happen without people like you.

COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES Florence Crittenton not only provides residential care to families struggling with substance use disorder. We provide community services to families of all ages and dynamics including outpatient mental health, individual and group addictions counseling, parenting classes for and home visitation. For the youngest members of our community we provide high quality early childhood programs. For more information visit www.florencecrittenton.org.

YOUR COMPASSION IN ACTION Meet Heather Greene

Donor Spotlight Thank you to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana for being an important partner with Florence Crittenten Home! BCBS of Montana has been investing in the lives of our clients for more than seven years, and provided needed support to ensure we’re giving our clients the best possible start on their families. We are so grateful for their consistent and generous support!

Florence Crittenton welcomes Heather Greene as its new Development Director. Heather was born and raised in Missoula, and ventured over the hill to Helena in 2006. She brings more than 25 years of nonprofit experience, 11 of those in Development and fundraising work, to Florence Crittenton. She has gained a thorough understanding of all aspects of fundraising and enjoys putting her talents to work, engaging donors. Heather is proud to be a part of an organization that brings hope and healing to young families and helps set them up for a bright future. Prior to joining Florence Crittenton in 2020, Heather served as the Development Director for Montana Wilderness Association and Prickly Pear Land Trust. In addition, she chaired the board of Heart of the Rockies Initiative, as well as Preschool, Inc. She served as Co-Chair of the Helena Development Directors Roundtable, served on the board of the Helena Public Montessori Parents, and has presented on Development in several venues. In her free time, Heather enjoys exploring our special Montana with her three kids, hiking, floating, and camping. Florence Crittenton is thrilled to have Heather on the team, and looks forward to building on what is already a robust and effective development program.

Paint the town

pink

Thanks to community members and donors like you, Paint the Town PINK has become one of Helena’s premiere events. Not only is it a beautiful evening of fine dining and an exciting auction, it is a critical fundraiser that directly supports the programs that benefit the young families and children we serve. After careful consideration of the ongoing pandemic our communities continue to face, we’ve made the difficult decision not to host PINK this upcoming year. We do not feel we’ll be able to safely host an in person event, and we are mindful that requesting donated auction items from our local businesses may be insensitive right now. But fear not! PINK will be back and better than ever once we can safely host you as our guest on February 12, 2022. Instead of inviting you to a live in person event this year, we invite you to invest in the lives of the families we serve and make a donation, knowing you’ll be helping these families recover, restore and rebuild thriving and productive lives, and you will ensure that we can continue amazing events like PINK into the future. Visit florencecrittenton.org to donate today. If you have any questions or would like to discuss other ways you or your business can be involved with Florence Crittenton over the next year, please contact our Development Office at 406-442-6950 x204, or heatherg@florencecrittenton.org Thank you in advance, and we look forward to seeing you in 2022 for the best PINK ever!
