why be local?

WE ARE PROUD TO SERVE THE HELENA COMMUNITY We care about you and we care about this community. For over 30 years we have believed in the idea that nice does matter and have strived to make a difference. And we will always be here to lend you a helping hand along the way.

As small business owners, we understand how hard it is to stand out in a crowd. This publication was created with the idea that there is power in numbers. If we work together as small, local businesses, we can all afford a high-quality, alternative advertising option that is both created and distributed by local businesses. Be Local/Shop Local is all about promoting and supporting locally-owned, independent businesses. It’s about making your hard-earned money go further, fueling the local economy, and helping to preserve the unique character of our community.

Make a difference. Shop local.

imagine designs rachel + bob krug Q. How long have you been in this line of business? A. We have been in the jewelry business since 1985. We owned and operated a

manufacturing company in Portland, Oregon, for 10 years but decided to move home in 2001 to give our children the opportunity to grow up in Montana like we did.

Q. Why should someone choose to buy from you, as opposed to a national chain jewelry store? A. There’s a lot of “cookie cutter” jewelry out there. Our talents and passions lie in making

custom jewelry as well as a funky, everyday fun jewelry. As a locally owned store, we can work with any budget, where large retail jewelry stores usually cannot because they have set prices. If a customer wants a custom designed piece, we can make suggestions to stay within their budget and still create a beautiful and unique design. Being a local retailer allows us this flexibility to guide the customer and help them make an educated buying decision. When you come into our store, the customer gets to be in control of what they want to purchase instead of choosing from stock designs that can be purchased anywhere.

Q. What products do you specialize in and what makes you unique? A. We specialize in custom design and Mokume-gane, which both make us unique.

The custom design ranges from hand-crafted jewelry to pieces designed with CAD software and an in-house milling machine. The art of custom design is just that – an art. If you have an idea, a picture or even a drawing of a design you want made into jewelry, we can convert that into an amazing piece to last a lifetime. Mokume-gane is the art of layering metal then working it to create patterns that run throughout. There are several types of metal to choose from but we primarily work with copper and silver because of the spectacular color contrast they provide together; however, other metals like colored gold can also be used. The end result is a hand-made, beautiful design at a reasonable price.

Q. What do you offer other than custom design and jewelry A. In addition to the large selection of jewelry, we have hand-

painted stemware, beautiful pottery, as well as Helena’s largest selection of Laurel Burch purses, scarves and mugs. Over a year ago, we started featuring artwork by local artists. The featured artist rotates regularly, and all types of medium are welcome.

Q. What plans do you have for the future of the store? A. We want to continue to produce a wide selection of quality

products and exceptional customer service. Because of this, we recently doubled the size of our store. We are in the same location across from the Lundy Center on Euclid, but we have expanded our selection into the retail space next to us. This additional square footage has allowed us to fill more cases with fun jewelry for any budget and personal style.

Q. As a local retailer in Helena, how do you show support and give back to the community? A. We feel that doing business in Helena is the first step to giving

back to the community. All money spent here helps the community in some way. We actively participate in several local charities. So far in 2010 we have donated over $10,000 in merchandise to local fundraisers and events for Westmont, Prickly Pear Land Trust, Lewis and Clark Humane Society, Chicks N Chaps, and many in-need families. Helena is a very giving community, and we are proud to be a part of it.
