Making A Difference

Movie Review “Chasing Ice” By Sydney Oliver

“Chasing Ice” is a breathtaking film that documents environmental

photographer James Balog’s mission of capturing visual evidence of our changing planet. The documentary has won over 30 awards at film festivals all over the world, including the “Excellence in Cinematography Award” at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. “Chasing Ice” is also a documentary by the producer Jeff Orlowski who produced Academy Award winning film “The Cove”. This film was first screened in theaters in November 2012 and has made such an impact that it was screened at the White House on Earth Day this year. “Chasing Ice” begins in the spring of 2015 as James Balog sets out to the Arctic on an assignment for National Geographic to capture pictures of Earth’s changing climate. This trip opened his eyes to the severity of the issue and sparked a passion to portray evidence that our planet is in danger but also delivers hope that we can do something about it. James and his team install several cameras that are timed to take multiple images throughout the year in order to capture the depletion of the glaciers. The documentary is filled with stunning videos and beautiful images that have never been captured on film until now. “Chasing Ice” is now available on iTunes and Netflix and should definitely be added to your summer movie list!
