The following is a listing of activities scheduled at the East Cobb Senior Center located at 3332 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta 30066. Blood Pressure Checks Tuesdays, January 7, 21 & 28 | 10am – 12pm Ice Cream and a Movie: The Butler Monday, January 13 | 1pm – 4:30pm $4 Cobb residents; $5 Non-residents Lee Daniel’s The Butler tells the story of a White House butler who served eight American presidents over three decades. The film traces the dramatic changes that swept American society during this time, from the civil rights movement to Vietnam and beyond and how those changes affected this man’s life and family. Forest Whitaker stars as the butler with Robin Williams as Dwight Eisenhower, James Marsden as John Kennedy, Liev Schrieber as Lyndon Johnson, John Cusack as Richard Nixon, and Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan. A Beginner’s Guide to E-books Thursday, January 16 & 23 | 11am – 12pm Free; Registration required. E-books are the next big thing in reading. They enable you to carry your entire library in the palm of your hand. Most e-book readers are about the size of a standard paperback but much lighter. Today you can get hundreds of thousands of e-books free online and you can buy today’s best-sellers at prices considerably below the cost of paper versions. On day one of this two part class, we’ll discuss how to use the Kindle e-readers and then day two will focus on the Nook series of e-readers. Presented by Debby Boyce from Mountain View Library. Exercise: The Real Fountain of Youth Wednesday, January 22 | 1 – 2pm Free; Registration required. Want to age gracefully? Keep moving. Regular exercise can reduce the risk of chronic disease such as heart trouble, diabetes, even cancer and keep you feeling and looking younger as you age. This seminar, presented by Bev Stegman from Foundation Therapy Center, will teach the importance of strength and cardiovascular activity and how to fit it in your life. AARP Smart Driver January 28 & 30 | 9am – 12pm $15 AARP member; $20 Non-member Aging in Place Wednesday, January 29 | 11am – 12pm Free; Registration required. What does “Aging in Place” mean to you as an individual or for those caring for another? Should you consider a move if an illness or disability occurs, if the house floor plan isn’t convenient or should this decision be based on something else entirely? Being able to live safely in your own home is important and the concept of “Aging in Place” looks at ways to live a satisfying life in the place of your choice. Dara McMillan with the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the National Aging in Place Council will cover: basic concepts of aging in place, potential or perceived barriers, and solutions and ways to create a personalized plan.
