DURHAM UNIVERSITY BUSINESS SCHOOL

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS In 2015 we will celebrate 50 years of exceptional teaching and research. More than a business school, we are a global enterprise. With an ever-increasing number of teaching staff and 3000 students located across three campuses, we are an exciting, diverse and high-calibre academic community, currently the largest department in Durham University. Over half of our students are international, with large contingents from China, India and the US. Our reach extends to joint programmes offered in Europe and China, in addition to our portfolio of global distance-learning executive programmes. Our Global MBA is ranked 6th in the world and we are one of an elite group of business schools worldwide to hold triple accreditation status from: the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), The Association of MBAs (AMBA) and EQUIS. We are proud to be at the forefront of business education.

The Business School is part of a University-wide bid to the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) for European funding for a Centre for Innovation and Growth that will provide incubation space for spinout companies. The School is developing major new research projects in the areas of big data and energy economics. For every ÂŁ4,000 we can raise we can add ÂŁ6,000 from external funding.

OUR CHAMPIONS Many of our global community of senior alumni have progressed to achieve great success – as dynamic entrepreneurs and world-renowned leaders in industry. Many of these individuals are still actively involved in our ongoing development – as advocates, advisors and donors. Investment in our activities from alumni, corporate partners and benefactors enables us to do more and reach further – to help students, enhance the learning experience, recruit the best staff and provide world-class facilities. We gratefully acknowledge this support.

Durham University Electric Motorsport is a dedicated interdisciplinary team of engineers and business students who are designing and building a solar car to race in the World Solar Challenge in Australia in 2015. To realise this ambition they need to raise £40,000 for materials and shipping.

The Student Investment Club was established with a donation from Sir George Russell. Every year Masters students in Finance and Economics compete to win a place on the Club Board to get first-hand experience managing an investment portfolio of FTSE 100 companies.

FUNDRAISING FOR THE FUTURE Our past and present successes fuel our ambitions. We will continue to grow and further improve our rankings. In doing so, we will strengthen our position amongst the world’s best schools, producing cuttingedge research and developing future leaders across disciplines, from finance, economics and entrepreneurship, to accounting, human resources, marketing and management.

To achieve that goal we have invested in state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities at Queen’s Campus, Stockton and Mill Hill Lane, Durham. Valued philanthropic income enables us to maintain momentum and do more to stand out from our competitors and add real value to the student experience.

By 2015 we aim to announce the naming rights for the Business School and to raise £500k in donations to develop more opportunities in the following areas: • Scholarships, Student Prizes and Bursaries To attract the brightest and most motivated individuals and to enable students to undertake study visits and attend conferences to broaden and enrich their experience. • Centre for Entrepreneurship and Student Venture Development Fund To help enterprising students from across the University to realise their business ideas. • Research Funding To recruit and retain world-class faculty to create and disseminate new knowledge.

Building on the Centre for Entrepreneurship’s annual Dragon’s Den competition and the University-wide Blueprint business plan competition and KickStart weekend, generous donations and a class gift have supported the launch of a programme of guest entrepreneur speakers and an incubator for students working on new business ideas.
