Just get in and drive. That’s what I tell myself when the pressures of the world weigh heavily on me. Just get in and drive. When the noise of everyday life is shouting over the song in my soul. Just get in and drive. What I’m talking about is driving for the sake of pleasure. Whether on a country road or a private track, driving for pleasure is a luxury that anyone with a car can afford, regardless of income. It merely involves a willing machine and the absence of a Point B. Money can help, though. There is no better automobile I’ve found for pleasure driving than a McLaren, which doesn’t come cheap. A drive in a McLaren is like an antidepressant overdose with a stimulant chaser. Visceral, intimate, and thrilling — all at once. Fortunately, this month’s cover car, the all-new McLaren Artura, brings the brand’s price of entry down to the lower six-figure range. The hybridized supercar is an over-the-counter antidote to existential dread. On the other side of the high-end spectrum is Rolls-Royce. Our automotive content manager Gabriel Vega Cortés drove 1,000 miles in a Ghost Black Badge for this issue, just to test its effect on mood and well-being. He reported back a smile bigger than the sedan’s imposing grille. For some, only speed can ignite their body’s endorphin-producing machine. On page 31, we discuss the automakers offering client factory race programs that let you live your best Verstappen life, no matter which brand’s blood you bleed. These companies will sell you a car that only requires a pithy livery to go racing, and they offer great support after an ego-withering shunt. But still, one doesn’t need 1-percenter wealth to enjoy driving. There are vestiary accessories out there that can make any car, from a simple Miata to a 10-year-old Benz, feel freeing to drive. And my last prescription for four-wheeled serenity is to let someone else drive — just sit back and watch. It’s called motorsport, Formula 1 in particular. In this issue we introduce to you to the sport’s newest grand prix, set in sunny Miami, which will be an epic event in duPont REGISTRY’s own backyard that nobody wants to miss. As the years pass, automakers of all kinds push forward in the pursuit of electrifying their lineups. This fact is ever-present in the supercar segment, where the fastest cars in the world are getting an extra boost of power courtesy of electrification. For McLaren Automotive, the first attempt at producing an electric model resulted in the P1, which was a smashing success for the British manufacturer. Now, McLaren has introduced the Artura, a supercar that delivers their hybrid technology to even more drivers than ever before. Since the production of the P1 ended back in 2015, McLaren has made incredible advancements in regards to electrified powertrain — and those are on full display with the Artura. For power, the Artura relies on an all-new 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that’s mated to a 34-pound E-motor. McLaren nestled this electric motor inside the bell housing of the eight-speed gearbox so that its additional 94 horsepower and 166 foot-pounds of torque can be delivered straight to the transmission shaft. In total, the Artura packs 671 horsepower and 531 foot-pounds of torque; of that, 577 horses and 431 foot-pounds

Luxury is rarely logical. Across the first century of automotive history, car connoisseurs revered the finery of leather, wood, and intricate 12-cylinder engines in the same way they regarded mechanical watches: with a healthy respect for handmade complication. Traditional car building followed the same principles as the horological world, placing a premium on painstaking craftsmanship. But when a changing world forced new demands on vehicle emissions, the next revolution trickled down from the top. Formula 1 racing introduced gas/electric hybrid powertrains, and the so-called “holy trinity of hypercars” — the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder — followed. If million-dollar ultra-exotics can gain an edge through electrification, surely change isn’t all bad. We’re now five years into that paradigm shift, and top carmakers are at fever pitch, ready to write the second act of the luxury automobile. Trailblazing EVs helped make a certain South African the richest man in the world, and hot on the heels of that first wave came electrified efforts from a passel of forward-thinking upstarts and legacy brands alike. The newbies have

taken a strong swing at the genre, grabbing headlines with all-electric models boasting boggling stats. Think: 1,900 horsepower (Pininfarina Battista), 520 miles of range (Lucid Air), and 0 to 60 mph in 1.85 seconds (Rimac Nevera). But luxury was never about numbers alone, especially in a space where enthusiasm is defined not only by hardware, but through intangibles. Those who were imprinted at an early age by a certain leather smell or a carmaker’s peculiar identities can relate; fans are quick to point out a brand’s lovable quirks, which make each model as distinct as fingerprints, despite a common goal of getting from A to B. As high-end marques delve deeper into electrification, they are forced to focus on every touchpoint along the way. Bentley sales and marketing board member Alain Favey cites the charging experience as one of many elements that must be on brand in order for its hybrids and EVs to succeed. “Our customer expects a luxury charging experience,” he explains, “and it needs to be different from what you get when you drive a premium brand like Mercedes or a volume brand; it cannot be the same as a [Volkswagen] ID-4.” Bentley PR head Wayne Bruce points out that the brand leverages its owner-only app to gauge customer preferences. One survey revealed that when Bentley’s first hybrid was released (in 2019), only 30 percent of respondents indicated they wanted an electric model. As of five months ago, that number has doubled. Addressing an electrified future means branding efforts must extend beyond conventional styling and performance and go deep into the realms of software and user interface design: everything from charging portals to onboard route planners and multimedia systems must live up to the expectations of the car’s respective nameplate.With the dream of self-driving cars deferred, manufacturers are also channeling more effort into making their EVs drive the way consumers expect them to, even if propulsion is coming from electrons, not internal combustion. Ferrari’s first serially produced plugin hybrid was the nearly 1,000-horsepower SF90, marking the first time the prancing horse flagship has swapped fewer cylinders (12 for 8) for a three-motor, battery-assisted drivetrain. The brand doubled down on the upmarket/downsizing theme with the 296 GTB, an 818-horsepower plug-in hybrid that marks the first time a V6 has been packed into a road-going Ferrari-branded model. Maranello’s toe-dip into hybrids prefigures the debut of their first full EV in 2025, which should present their greatest challenge yet in delivering that inimitable Ferrari feeling without the benefit of a screaming internal combustion engine. Given the criticality of satisfying a core audience whose preferences are quite particular, to say the least, performance-focused carmakers are relying on key brand pillars to ensure the models are as engaging to drive as they ought to be. While Ferrari’s hybrids are already gaining critical acclaim, several other manufacturers are still in the process of R&D’ing their electrified sports cars. Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW’s performance-focused M brand, views the future through the prism of the past. He says the shift from 4- to 6- to 8-cylinder M car engines caused a stir among enthusiasts because the bigger engines were heavier; the advent of turbocharging introduced similar concerns about sound quality and throttle response. As for the first electrified M car, van Meel notes, power and acceleration are less of an issue than the intangibles that make a driver feel at one with the machine. “The real task is to have that M smile, that

M emotion,” he says, describing a certain something that each brand can lean on as a unique feeling associated with the drive. Mercedes-AMG boss Philipp Schiemer recently launched the brand’s first fully electric car, the 751-horsepower AMG EQS, which was based on the tamer, S-Class-like EQS sedan. Schiemer reveals that not only will other segments receive the AMG treatment (to be expected), but that their efforts will extend to a standalone AMG electric vehicle in the “not too distant future.” Using hybrid powertrains as a bridge to full electrification is a common tactic, especially among carmakers whose foundations were built on signature powerplants. Lamborghini’s snarling V10 and V12 engines have been the protagonist in their raging bull persona since the brand’s inception. The Sant’Agata carmaker is anticipating a full

transition to hybrids by 2024 — a move that should enable them to retain their massive gas engines. Bentley’s Beyond 100 business strategy promises plug-in hybrid versions of all models by 2024, their first full EV in 2025, and an entirely EV-only lineup by 2030. Over a period of 7 years, the tactic will take them from being the world’s top producer of 12-cylinder engines to offering none. Aston Martin is also on board with the hybrid-first approach, having started delivery of their $3 million, 1,160-horsepower Valkyrie last year. While Aston intends to deliver its first battery-electric vehicle in 2025 and electrified options across the lineup by 2026, it is also building a China-only variant of the DBX utilizing a mild-hybrid 6-cylinder. The brand expects 90 percent of the cars sold by 2030 to be plug-in hybrids or pure electrics, and their recent partnership with battery tech firm Britishvolt should complement their technological link to Mercedes-Benz and enable them to move forward in this burgeoning arena. If the road to electrified luxury can be summed up in one idea, it might be that carmakers are challenged with myriad obstacles as they intend to move toward a common goal, the least of which is preserving and maintaining their core characteristics while they proceed to change nearly everything about their cars. Each road is individual, and RollsRoyce’s is no different. Rather than using plug-in hybrids to ease their customers into electrification, the Goodwood brand is leveraging its past to take a quantum leap into the future. In 1900, company co-founder Charles Rolls experienced an early EV and raved about the experience with a qualification, saying, “The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean, there is no smell or vibration … But for now, I do not anticipate that they will be very serviceable — at least for many years to come.” That time is now, with the Sceptre, Rolls-Royce’s first electric vehicle, expected to start delivery in the fourth quarter of 2023. “The brand will become fully electric step by step, but only if it is uncompromised,” CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös says in a full-circle statement that could only come by sticking to the carmaker’s original ethos. “Now is the time to change the course of the future of luxury.”

Suppose you distill a Rolls-Royce down to its essence: a tremendously comfortable vehicle with world-class suspension and enough noise isolation to make even police sirens sound no louder than a notification on your phone. While these attributes make a Rolls-Royce ideal for navigating urban environments in your own personal bubble, they should also make it the ideal machine for a road trip. To confirm this hypothesis, I reached out to the folks at Rolls-Royce with a simple idea: a round trip in the Ghost Black Badge from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Setting off from my home in Pasadena, I had three routes to choose from, two of which took me through the Middle of Nowhere, California. After about 10 seconds of internal debate, I picked Highway 101 as my way up, a path with plenty of mountain passes and ocean views along the way and the perfect place to test the Black Badge’s split personality. However, the scenic drive comes with considerable penalties. For starters, this route added an extra 54 miles and more than an hour of

drive time, clocking in at just over seven hours before I reached my hotel in downtown San Francisco. With the snow-capped mountains of Los Angeles in the rear-view, I began my seven-hour drive north with the Ghost and its enormous trunk filled to the brim with luggage, cameras, tripods, and enough snacks to feed a village. Since Rolls-Royce was kind enough to drop off my tester with a full tank of gas, there was nothing to do except to hit the road. Immediately, as I hit the highway, I was glad I had chosen a Rolls-Royce for the trip. Living in Los Angeles, it’s easy to get used to poor road conditions. You learn to dodge the potholes while accepting that a bumpy ride is inevitable. Thankfully, the Ghost was not concerned with even the most significant imperfections. Initially, I was worried the larger air springs would stiffen up the suspension too much, taking away from the comfortable driving experience. However, I was quickly proven wrong — the car glides over the road exactly as you’d expect a $500,000 sedan should. The long, open highways didn’t last very long as we crossed into San Luis Obispo and encountered curvy mountain terrain. With “Low” mode engaged, I began to pick up my pace. (Although my wife — with an open water bottle — didn’t appreciate the quick shifts, I did.) The Black Badge gains a surprising amount of urgency when you switch to “Sport” mode. Slam down your foot, and it picks up speed so quickly that the rear-end squats incredibly low, pointing the Spirit of Ecstasy to the sky. While the larger air springs desperately try to keep body roll in check, there’s no stopping the lateral movement of a 5,500-pound sedan without spoiling the ride — and Rolls-Royce didn’t. It leans considerably, but it’s not stiff by any means. While the British marque’s interpretation of BMW’s iDrive system is excellent, I stuck with the available wireless Apple CarPlay option. ers punchy colors with a very high-definition touchscreen display. While I liked interacting with it via touch, the rotary dial in the center console is better suited for navigating multiple menus. With San Francisco still about an hour away, I began to notice a numbness in my lower back, likely from sitting so long. I’ve sat in some comfortable seats in my day, and most could never save me from the wear and tear of a long drive, but the Black Badge has an ace up its sleeve. There’s a feature called “Activation Massage,” which, as its name suggests, applies pressure to activate your various body parts. Set to the most aggressive setting, the Ghost did an excellent job revitalizing my back. After about 10 minutes, I felt utterly refreshed for the final charge into the city. Rising just before the sun on the second day, I ran over to the garage and fired up the Ghost to snap some photos. Naturally, the Golden Gate Bridge was the top location on my list. To be expected? However, for us picky folks, Rolls-Royce offers more than 44,000 stock color options, and if you’re still unsatisfied, they’ll paint your car in any color you can think of. As the sun rose on the third day, my Bay Area bender was coming to an end. While I loved spending time in the city, I was more excited for the six-hour drive home. At this point, I was utterly enamored with the car, actively looking for get-rich-quick schemes to be able to buy one. While I had driven it through the mountains, a big city, and along the coast, I hadn’t had a chance to open it up and see how it performs at higher speeds. So this time, I eagerly set my navigation to the Middle of Nowhere, California, and we veered off toward Los Angeles. As soon as we hit Interstate 5 South, it was a ghost town with only a few big trucks hugging the slow lane. I re-engaged “Low” mode and put my foot down. While the Black Badge and its 592-horsepower V12 have tremendous power, its delivery is smooth, progressive, and seemingly never-ending. It can reach a top speed of 155 mph. Despite a

hefty number on the dash, the car’s excellent sound isolation and suspension mean you don’t feel the speed. As we rejoined the highway, we enjoyed an uneventful final drive to Los Angeles, pulling into my neighborhood just as the sun tucked behind the horizon line. Despite a long travel day, I felt refreshed, and I would’ve carried on for another six hours if I could. After more than 1,000 miles behind the wheel of the 2022 Ghost Black Badge, it’s clear that this car excels at walking a fine line between a genuinely sporty sedan and a traditional luxury land yacht. With an ominous aesthetic, a sporty drive, and a well-appointed tech-filled interior, this Ghost positions itself as an omen of the next generation.

As Formula 1 stumbles blinking into the sunlight from under the shadow of COVID-19, the world championship enters its most ambitious season yet with a new jewel in its crown: a second grand prix in the United States — in Miami, one of the Sunshine State’s most vibrant cities. This race, happening May 8, features an almost unprecedented level of partnership between Formula One Management and the race promoter. “The U.S. is a key growth market for us,” was the succinct summary of Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali when the race was confirmed last April. With a Las Vegas event also in the running for consideration, it likely won’t be long before the United States is hosting a trio of grands prix. Students of the sport will recall that former chief executive Bernie Ecclestone held ambitions to stage multiple events in the country. It has been a somewhat tortuous journey to drum up the interest, but the importance of the American market has never been in doubt. The arrival of Austin’s Circuit of the Americas in 2012 gave Formula 1 a perma-

nent track in a city that fêtes the race and draws a dynamic fanbase, often with many celebrities in attendance. Though questions have been raised about the future of the Texas race, it seems unlikely that COTA can fail to capitalize on America’s newfound love affair with racing. Why the need for a second grand prix in the States? Simply put, the demand is there. While the size of Formula 1’s fanbase in the world’s largest economy has always been characterized as small but passionate, its commercial clout is among the most significant. Now, at a time of surging growth in U.S.-based sponsorship deals — think Cognizant (Aston Martin) and Oracle (Red Bull) — on top of dramatic growth in viewership thanks to the Netflix effect, Miami is among the most-anticipated new host cities to join the F1 calendar. The 3.36-mile street circuit features 19 corners and three straights, the last of which seems to go on forever and leads into a tight left-hander. Overtaking is guaranteed. Turns 1, 11, and 17 carry the promoter’s hopes for plenty of action. More than one person has described the track as looking “something like Melbourne, only quite a lot quicker.” Businesses are being encouraged to tap into the opportunity created by Formula 1 coming to town. “It is … rewarding to have partners who are committed to investing in our community and youth,” Miami Gardens Mayor Rodney Harris said of the F1 introduction. “These initiatives align with the city’s overall goal of creating meaningful, sustainable programs for residents and businesses.” Public and corporate demand for the race is off the charts, with 275,000 people preregistering for 80,000 tickets. The initial wave sold out in 40 minutes. Some additions to the F1 calendar have been met with little enthusiasm. Others, like the Singapore night race, added in 2008, have really added to the spectacle and appeal. Miami is poised to be one of the latter, a grand prize for F1 owner Liberty Media and another boost for stateside motorsport.

Don’t let the tough exterior — or the fact that this car comes from the adrenaline-fueled world of motorsport — frighten you off. The 2022 Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition is racy and responsive, but this road-going model of the official Formula 1 safety car maintains the luxurious standards that we’ve come to expect from the British marque. Right off the bat, you’ll notice the F1 Edition’s design isn’t as traditionally “beautiful” as some of its siblings. That’s because it trades some of the Vantage’s subtler design elements for a more imposing aesthetic. Take the redesigned front bumper, for example. Instead of a sleek grille, we get a massive mouth that seemingly spans the width of the car. Despite its “look at me” attitude, this striking element feels cohesive with the rest of the design. In the rear, it’s a similar story. A wing accompanies the already aggressive rear diffuser. Couple those improvements with the new front splitter, and you get more than 440 pounds of downforce. As a result, the visual enhancements serve both form and function. The cherry on top is a set of 21-inch wheels on all four corners with matte black spokes and silver faces. Lift the hood, and you’ll find a Mercedes-AMG-sourced 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 churning out 528 horsepower and 505 foot-pounds of torque. The engine provides enough power to rocket the vehicle — and its 3,461-pound curb weight — to 60 mph in a mere 3.5 seconds. All of the horsepower and torque go to the rear wheels exclusively by way of an eight-speed automatic transmission.

I stepped behind the wheel for a cruise through the canyons in Los Angeles. Driving the Angeles Crest Scenic Byway — which was built in the first half of the 1900s to be the most scenic and picturesque mountain road in the state — it became clear that the F1 Edition is more fun and more responsive than any Aston Martin I had maneuvered previously. The F1 Edition feels significantly more planted and less tail-happy than the standard Vantage; this not only stokes confidence in the car but also allows you to carry greater speed. Even with upgraded suspension and track-ready improvements, the F1 Edition remains perfectly comfortable on the road. While the ride isn’t Rolls-Royce smooth, it also isn’t as bouncy or compromised as many of today’s track-day specials. (I was testing an SUV alongside the Aston in the same week, and I’d argue that this low-slung supercar was the more comfortable of the two.) To say that I was impressed by the Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition would be an understatement. But would you expect any less with a ride modeled after the Formula 1 pace car? Aside from excellent driving dynamics at speed, the on-road comfort and usability make me wish I could jump into this car regularly just to cruise. More than anything, this model has me eager to see what’s next with Aston Martin’s new motorsport-inspired direction. The British carmaker has received a great deal of investment in recent years and has undergone some significant staff changes. If the latest Vantage is anything to go by, there is much to look forward to with this brand.

After attending a McLaren P1 event in Greece, motorsport enthusiast, dealership owner, and business executive Tom O’Gara set out to partner with the organizers of the rally, White Label Events, to produce a special get-together for his dealership clients. And so began a newfound partnership between O’Gara and White Label, an events company that is highly regarded among the luxury automotive world as creator of the 106 Drivers Club. As O’Gara would say, “We don’t just want to sell the best tuxedos and ballgowns. We also want to provide an occasion to wear them.” And O’Gara’s Escape to the Desert event is exactly what that was. Amangiri — a place where the term “five-star” doesn’t seem high enough — is architecturally one of the most impressive resorts in the country. This world-renowned location in Canyon Point, Utah, made for an incredible home base for the rally. After organized driving days, the property hosted evening cocktail hours and dinners in various secluded areas across its 600 acres. The prime location also gave guests access to once-ina-lifetime hiking trails and other various outdoor activities. The motorcade event featured a mix of the newest Bentley models, with a heavy dose of Continentals. Drivers, all O’Gara clients based in Southern California, were hand-selected to participate by each of O’Gara’s three Bentley dealerships. While the Continental GT was the favored vehicle during the three days of truly grand touring, the Bentayga also joined in the fun as drivers explored iconic monuments, incredible views, and national parks through Utah and Arizona. The first day kicked off with a cruise through Monument

Valley and a lunch stop at Gooseneck State Park. Guests enjoyed an incredible Navajo-inspired meal, 20 feet from the edge of a cliff overlooking the canyon below. On the second day, a slower-pace drive wound through Zion National Park, where the backdrop of high canyon walls and picturesque mountains seemed to be plucked from Walt Disney’s imagination. Then, drivers pitted for lunch in an area with sweeping views of Bryce Canyon. Day three included a crossing of the historic Navajo Bridge in Marble Canyon, Arizona, on the way to Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. With lunch positioned in the middle of an open plain, guests enjoyed unobstructed views of the colossal cliffs around them. As Escape to the Desert came to a close, guests departed with every expectation completely blown away. And all were clamoring to know: “When will we receive our next invite?” MAY 2 02 2

Iconic drivers make iconic races, and iconic races make iconic cars. This one, commandeered by Scuderia Ferrari’s Michael Schmacher during the 1998 Formula 1 season, ultimately cost Schumacher the world championship title in the finale Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. The chassis — which also carried Schumacher to a second-place finish that year in the Luxembourg Grand Prix at Nürburgring — went into the final race four points behind McLaren’s Mika Häkkinen. Although Schumacher qualified on pole, his race went wrong before the start when he stalled on the formation lap, an error requiring the car to move to the back of the grid. He stormed his way through the pack and was running third when he ran over debris from a previous collision between two other cars, and his tire deflated three laps later. With Schumacher out, Häkkinen cruised to his first of two Formula 1 World Drivers Championship titles. In interviews after the race, Schumacher kept his spirits high. “First of all, I want to congratulate Mika Häkkinen and his team,” he told the press. “They performed better throughout the season, and so they deserve the title. I think we did not lose this championship in Suzuka, but in the early stages
