Some people can’t leave well enough alone. In the automotive world, they’re known as tuners. They look at a car from the factory as unfinished, and only they have the final piece. God bless ’em. There are a handful of tuning companies so good at what they do, they’ve been bought by the automaker they specialize in and brought in house. Names like Polestar, Alpina, and AMG. What AMG in particular did — first as a racing team and then as a boutique builder of Mercedes-Benz performance vehicles — is the blueprint for success in the tuning business. We review their history on page 14. The company’s story hit a new high this year with the final unveiling of the AMG One, a road-going interpretation of the Formula 1 car that Lewis Hamilton dominated the sport with for eight years. Congratulations, AMG. You’ve set the standard for tuners, and earned our cover this month. Ready the story on page 18. While we’re welcoming one supercar into existence, it’s sadly time to say goodbye to another. The Lamborghini Aventador is stepping aside after a decade of production to make way for the Italian brand’s electrified future. Not, however, without a swan song. The last Aventador is called the Ultimae — a fitting title, considering it’s the most powerful nonelectrified Lamborghini in the brand’s portfolio. We had to drive it to get one last taste of Lamborghini’s legendary V12 engine (page 30). Maybe you haven’t bought a Mercedes-AMG or Lamborghini yet and you’re upgrading your own car with aftermarket parts. There are a few things you should know, and our rundown on page 36 offers a primer on body modification, performance tuning, and tire setup. While it won’t add horsepower to your car, paint-protection film (PPF) is one of the best investments for preserving your car’s value, particularly if it’s your daily driver. Nothing ruins a car’s appeal like imperfect paint; PPF is the answer. We’ll tell you more about it on page 41. Did you know other industries have tuners too? There are watch “tuners,” for instance, that take those wrist-mounted machines to new heights with exclusive customizations. We’ll introduce you to a few of them on page 72. In the 1960s, engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher received some terrible news. Daimler-Benz had decided to end all motorsport activities — tough luck for a duo working in the engine development department, where they’d been wrenching on a new racing engine for the 300 SE. Rather than kill the project, the engineers took the power plant to Aufrecht’s basement in Großaspach, Germany, and continued development after hours. In 1965, the engine was ready to go racing. With racing driver Manfred Schiek behind the wheel, they entered that year’s German Touring Car Championship.And the engine didn’t just race — it won 10 times, proving to Aufrecht and Melcher that they were onto something big. Aufrecht decided he was ready to branch out and enlisted Melcher to continue their racing pursuits as an independent brand. In 1967, AMG was born. AMG,which stands forAufrecht, Melcher, and Großaspach, charged out of the gates with an ambitious first project. The engineers purchased a used Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 and began to prepare it for entry in one of the toughest races of the time, the 24 Hours of Spa. The crown jewel was the car’s engine, punched out to 6.8 liters and

delivering 428 horsepower. In 1971, sans the support of Mercedes-Benz, their team of 12 took to the track with the very first AMG. Onlookers mocked it, and rightfully so. The 300 SEL was a big, heavy luxury sedan, not a purebred racer. They dubbed it “Red Pig.” The Red Pig didn’t take long to transform mockery into amazement. Despite starting fourth on the grid, the land yacht turned speedboat led the race by the end of the first lap. It dominated all of its competitors, winning first in class and second overall. According to Aufrecht, they would’ve won overall if the regulators hadn’t limited its fuel tank to a measly 120 liters. Nonetheless, AMG had left a mark, and throughout the 1970s, business exploded. So much so that the tuning firm relocated to Affalterbach, where it lives today. Fast-forward to 1986 — AMG unveiled its most significant road car, dubbed the AMG Hammer on account of the 5.0-liter V8 that lived under its hood. This engine was unique because it featured new fourvalve-per-cylinder technology, which had been developed by Melcher two years prior. It was the first time anyone had used this configuration in a Mercedes-Benz, and it boosted power tremendously. By 1993, Mercedes-Benz wanted a piece of the performance pie. The carmaker signed a contract with the tuning firm, allowing Mercedes-Benz to sell AMGbranded vehicles through its vast dealership network. The first was the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 36, released that year and marking the start of a fruitful partnership. Within four years, Mercedes-Benz commissioned AMG to build the marque’s first race car — from scratch; 128 days after AMG completed its initial sketch, the MercedesBenz CLK GTR entered to race in the FIA GT Championship series. At the turn of the century, Mercedes-Benz acquired a controlling stake in AMG, renaming it Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Following this move, Mercedes-AMG furthered its development of significant components for road vehicles.This included bespoke engines, transmissions, and entire cars from the ground up. In 2005, Aufrecht, then 67, sold his remaining shares, giving Mercedes-Benz complete control over its performance subdivision. Throughout the 2010s, Mercedes-AMG ramped up its engineering might while producing more in-house vehicles than ever before, starting with the SLS AMG. The performance carmaker now manufactures three in-house vehicles: the GT, SL Roadster, and GT 4-Door Coupé.The company’s most ambitious project yet — the Mercedes-AMG One — is currently underway.

When it comes to power, the engineers over at Affalterbach developed the roaring idea to equip the AMG One with what is essentially a Formula 1 engine — and they did just that. The hybrid drive is pulled right off the grid, and it consists of a 1.6-liter V6 hybrid engine and four electric motors. Those four electric motors are located in the turbocharger, on the engine itself, and the last two are mated to the front wheels. In total, the AMG One produces an incredible 1,049 horsepower, which will launch it to a limited top speed of 218.7 mph. While on its way to that peak speed, the One will scream up to 11,000 rpm to create a heart-stopping exhaust note. Wi t h s u c h a n a d v a n c e d powertrain, the German marque has packed its new hypercar with a sizeable selection of driving modes that dynamically adjusts the hybrid engine and electric motors. These include the standard Race Safe mode, with an all-electric startup that only forces the engine to switch on when higher power is required. From here, there’s Race mode, keeping the engine on; EV mode for all-electric driving; and Individual mode, which allows the driver to set their own preferences. The remaining two modes not only adjust the powertrain but also the suspension. Race Plus is a track-only mode that turns on

This mode is, of course, for only the racetrack. Everyone loves to see an automaker unveil an extreme model, and Mercedes-AMG scores bonus points for pulling technology straight from its yearslong dominion in Formula 1. However, the company’s will to avoid compromise and release a true road beast means the hypercar is only available in Europe, where it meets applicable regulations. That means that, unfortunately,

the AMG One will not be driveable in the United States. Mercedes-AMG had this to say regarding their decision: “While its engine has its origins in competition, constant development and refinement have left us with a difficult decision for the U.S. market. In order to preserve the unique character of its Formula 1 powertrain, we have concluded that meeting U.S. road standards would significantly compromise its performance and its overall driving character.” While it is bittersweet to see such a phenomenal car created, but not allowed in the United States, at least the world will finally get to see the extreme German automobile that CLK GTR fans have been pining for.

The end of the Lamborghini Aventador is here. More importantly, its departure marks the end of an era for the Italian carmaker. No more purely naturally aspirated V12s. From here on out, the brand’s flagship cars will either be hybrids or full EVs. Before closing that chapter, however, I’ve been driving their swan song. It’s called the Ultimae, and it is the most powerful Aventador they’ve created. I believe it’s also the best-looking and most rewarding to drive on the street. The Ultimae’s recipe is simple yet effective. Take the engine out of the fire-breathing SVJ, and drop it into something that looks more like an Aventador S. Tuned up to account for some added creature comforts in the cabin, the Ultimae’s 6.5-liter V12 develops 769 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque. Despite a weight gain of 55 pounds over the SVJ, those 10 additional horses allow this iteration to match its previous power-to-weight ratio. The Ultimae is more comfortable than its track-ready sibling but no slower in the real world. At full tilt, the Ultimae blasts past 60 mph in 2.8 seconds before continuing to a top speed of 221 mph. One pull of the Ultimae’s paddle reveals its age. The singleclutch automatic transmission is brutal. Engage it at full throttle, and the car rocks, slamming you against your seat. It’s been 11 years since the introduction of the Aventador, and still, nothing compares. Adding to its drama is the sound. Excluding the SVJ, the Ultimae is easily one of the loudest stock cars I’ve ever heard. Twisting through the canyon roads of Los Angeles, the high-pitched V12 soundtrack bounces off the mountains like nothing else.

Thanks to its inboard pushrod suspension and magnetic dampers, the Ultimae will hold on far longer than expected. At no point does it default to understeer. Paint-protection film, commonly known as PPF, or “clear bra,” stands as one of the easiest ways to protect your vehicle from stone chips, scratches, and overall road grime. The thermoplastic urethane film can trace its roots back to the Vietnam War. During the war, the U.S. military noticed vital aircraft parts, such as helicopter rotor blades, were heavily damaged by airborne shrapnel and other debris. At military request, 3M developed a protective film known then as “helicopter tape” — it was virtually invisible, lightweight, and easy to replace. Thanks to clever racing drivers, that military film made its way onto the track, eventually birthing PPF’s automotive sector as we know it today. In its early stages, car owners would cover high-impact zones, like wheel arches or their front bumper, with PPF. However, modern PPF is so flexible that it can be applied to virtually any surface on a vehicle, regardless of angle or size. Since it comes in sections, owners can select to cover specific areas of their car or the entire body. 3D-scanning technology advances the application possibilities of PPF by studying a vehicle’s surface to determine the exact size and shape of the material needed. This results in a custom fit that reduces additional cost of wasted material. Depending on the vehicle, full-body protection can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $7,000. While

there is a sizable upfront cost, these films can pay for themselves by protecting the value of your vehicle. Now I’m no stranger to scuffs and scratches. My ride, a 1987 Porsche 911, sports three decades’ worth of wear and tear, pushing it into “driver” condition. This is less of a problem when you’re planning to retire alongside your fossil fuel burner, but it makes a big difference when it comes time to sell. Whether browsing classic or modern listings, high-end vehicle buyers look for paint condition as a vital determination of value. Repainting surfaces or reconditioning significant portions of your vehicle has preliminary costs as well as potential longterm value loss. This is especially true on low-volume vehicles with unique paint jobs such as a Porsche’s paint to sample or Ferrari’s tailor-made. Even if your car’s PPF becomes partially damaged, it has self-healing properties that work to eliminate light scratches. WINNING SEASON

The “old man” with the long (fake) beard and walking stick gingerly waddled to the green and gold Formula 1 car sitting on pole position. Jack Brabham — the Australian racing driver who co-founded his own F1 team — was all too used to the wise-cracks about his age, and he couldn’t resist a comical retort. But behind the stunt and the good-natured laughs it triggered was a heavy dash of determination. Yes, he had turned 40 in April, and yes, prior to this season, he hadn’t won a points-paying grand prix for almost six years. But look at him now, here at Zandvoort for the 1966 Dutch GP, the fifth of nine races on the championship calendar. The two-time world champion had found his rhythm and was leading the standings. In Formula 1’s “return to power” season, as engine capacities doubled to three liters, Old Man Brabham had pulled a technical masterstroke and was winding back the clock. Zandvoort was the third in a string of four consecutive victories that happy summer of 1966. For the intrepid Brabham and his tight-knit team, the 1960s were finally beginning to swing. He’d built up to this since November 1963, when it was announced that F1 was

due for an evolution. More speed, more acceleration, more wheelspin, more noise. Yet in an echo of the 1961 downsize, major players still wouldn’t be fully prepared for the change. Lotus ended up killing time in 1966, falling back on Tasman series 2-liter Climax power and BRM’s hefty, overweight and reliably unreliable H16. Cooper joined forces with Maserati to use a V12 with a DNA anchored in the late 1950s, while the heritage of Ferrari’s 12-cylinder could be traced even further back to its foundations deep in the 1940s. Still, John Surtees was looking good for a second (fourwheeled) world title, even if the twin-spark 60-degree V12 was on the heavy side and better suited to sports-car racing. The trouble was, Brabham undercut them all after what was surely the most lucrative flight he ever took. He flew to the Los Angeles International Airport to view a liner-less aluminum Buick block at a General Motors distributor. While there, he was shown a sister pushrod unit that had been created for a now-defunct Oldsmobile project. In the simple, relatively light two-valve 90-degree V8, Brabham spotted a potential answer to his F1 power vacuum. He had the engine transported to his old friends at Repco — short for Replacement Parts Company — back home in Melbourne. Meanwhile, at an apartment in South London, Phil Irving, who’d made his reputation at Vincent Motorcycles, drew a new engine based on the Oldsmobile block with Brabham and his design partner, Ron Tauranac, looking over his shoulder, the latter advising on ancillary requirements. For Repco, pistons, rings, bearings, pins, guides, seals, gaskets, and liners were made in-house. The chain-driven SOHC V8 proved compact, frugal, and user-friendly fitted into Tauranac’s latest spaceframe BT19. Initial power came in at 280 brake-horsepower at 7,500 rpm, just shy of the V12 Ferrari. But at 317 pounds, it was lighter — significantly so compared with the complex 555-pound BRM H16. Surtees was worried, and his worst fears were confirmed at Silverstone’s nonchampionship International Trophy, where AUGUST 2 02 2

Brabham beat the Ferrari to pole position and left it for dust. Nevertheless, Brabham’s points-paying season took time to ignite. As Jackie Stewart won in Monaco with a 2-liter Tasman version of his 1965 BRM — emphasizing this as a time of transition — Surtees bristled at Ferrari politics lumbering him with the big V12 when he knew a 2.4 V6 was better suited to the principality. As for poor Brabham, he suffered from a tummy bug, retired with transmission trouble, and caught a bus back to his hotel because he couldn’t find a taxi. At Spa, Surtees saw off Jochen Rindt’s Cooper in a classic encounter — and his last Formula 1 appearance for Ferrari before their combustible divorce post– Le Mans. Brabham finished a cautious fourth, but was just happy to be alive after scraping through a big twitch in the deluge at Burnenville that caught out Stewart, whose dreadful experience following his accident triggered his epochal campaign AUGUST 2022

for better Formula 1 safety. The glory run began at Reims with a historic landmark: the first F1 world championship grand prix winner in a car bearing his own name — and Brabham’s first title since the 1960 Portuguese GP, a drought of 45 races. To compound his pleasure, teammate Denny Hulme scored a first podium, driving the new BT20. Brabham the team also dominated in the F2 race, as the eponymous chassis would all season, with a firecracker of a Honda 1-liter. Naturally, Jack’s rivals (and friends) were the first to congratulate him: John Cooper, ex-Brabham driver Dan Gurney (who’d clearly left the team just at the wrong time), and Colin Chapman. After Brands Hatch, Brabham’s favorite circuit, where he and Hulme notched up a British GP 1-2 — the stuff of dreams

— “the old man of racing” pulled his grid stunt at Zandvoort, battled with Jim Clark’s 2-liter Lotus on another oily surface, then stroked home when the Lotus pitted. For years, the watchmaking world has frowned on aftermarket customization. You know, buyers who take their Rolex or Audemars Piguet, for example, to third-party artisans to have them decked out in diamonds, gemstones, or even blackened and engraved with tattoolike designs. Most of those watches, though, could not hold their value on the secondhand or auction market because the modifications are a personal preference. However, strong demand on the part of watch lovers for an individualized look has prompted some brands to start their own personalization processes. Watch brands at ultra-high echelons such as Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe have been known to create one-of-a-kind highly complicated watches for special customers over the years. (Consider the fabled 1900s battle between these two brands and business magnates James Ward Packard and Henry Graves Jr. to see who could build, and own, the most complicated watch in the world.) Today, these companies continue to quietly produce oneoffs for preferred customers, but sometimes those watches take years to complete. So, for the purposes of real watch lovers who want something personalized at a level they can afford — and not wait years for — some brands have developed programs to let consumers customize certain elements of a watch, from selecting the dial color, to the strap, the engraving, the metal for the case, and more. These varying degrees of customization are beginning

to garner a lot of attention and, depending on the provenance of the watch, some even hold their value on the auction market. In the realm of artistic customization, Jaeger-LeCoultre has long offered personalization of its Reverso design (rectangular watches whose case swivels open and can be reversed to show a second side); they can be hand-painted with scenes or portraits that customers provide. The brand also offers hand-engraving on the Reverso. In similar fashion, Corum offers customization of its Golden Bridge Dragon watch. The dragon that curls around the caliber is available in special Pantone colors. Each color is exclusive, meaning the brand will never issue the same color to any other customer. Certain independent watch brands like Kari Voutilainen and H. Moser & Cie. also offer personalized dial colors and hand-guilloché finishes in very limited amounts. The independent brands have it a little easier when it comes to making customized pieces simply because their production levels are not as large as the mainstays — meaning they don’t necessarily have to stop creating a particular watch to retool the machinery and create a one-off. ter watchmakers and artisans are equipped for one-of-a-kind finishing, for instance, without shutting down production like a larger brand would have to do. On a more commercialized level, some brands are offering online configurators for customization. Watch buyers can select a host of different details to personalize, including dials, straps, stitching accents, colors of bezels or chapter rings, and in some cases, even movement parts. For instance, IWC Schaffhausen, a Richemont brand, introduced an online customization configurator where buyers could pick the aspects they wanted to customize for their Ingenieur timepieces. Porsche Design recently joined the configurator pack. The Porsche Design Chronotimer Chronograph chronometer is fully customizable; customers can pick PVD (physical vapor deposit) case coatings, bezel colors, bezel functions, dial colors, hands, straps, and stitching. They can even pick the paint color for the winding rotor inside the Caliber WERK 01.100, which matches the options available for the Porsche 911 car. With so many elements to customize, Porsche Design says there are 6 million possible combinations.

Another of the most successful providers of custom watches is Londonbased Bamford Watch Department, known for issuing small collaboration series. The company has worked with LVMH brands including Zenith, TAG Heuer, Bulgari, and Hublot as well as with Girard-Perregaux and others. Additionally, Bamford’s eponymous brand provides more than a billion different combinations for its sport and lifestyle lines. With so many companies offering these services, and more on the horizon, the new question is: Why not customize your time?
