publisher’s point of view

Onward and Upward The Next Chapter

It almost feels like I’m writing the last act of a play. How do I want it to end? Should there be suspense or the potential for the main character to come back from the dead? After seven years, 34 issues (including the volunteer book) and over 1,600 pages, Beyond 50 is retiring. Many of my clients and the community partners are asking why? Well, September 21 is Laurel’s 50th birthday and for the past seven years I have spent 99 per cent of my time working, networking and giving back to this community. I was trying to create financially stability for Devon, Dallas and myself, as well as provide a forum for people who had great stories worth sharing. I have always been a girl who gives more than she takes and now as I approach 50, I decided that life has to change. I told Devon and Dallas I wanted to live until I was 108.5 so if I don’t learn to de-stress and spend a little more time having fun, I won’t make it. Beyond 50 has been an incredible ride and learning curve for me, but I’m at a point where I want to enjoy a little downtime. And for anyone who is self employed, you know how hard it is to “turn it off.” I have said this a lot over the past seven years, and I will keep saying it - this magazine has been about “serendipity.” I have met the most fascinating people, attended a lot of functions, connected and reconnected with people and made a impact when and where I could.

The next chapter for Laurel has already begun. I was fortunate enough to have been hired as the Executive Director for the Uptown Rutland Business Association (URBA). My Board of Directors are wonderful to work with and the people in the Rutland area are the friendliest you could meet. We have some big plans for Rutland and I am so excited be one of the catalyst to bring it all together.

My boys are behind me 100 per cent, just as they have always been. Devon is currently taking his Diver Training Certification at Diving Dynamics and Dallas is heading into Grade 11 at KSS. I could never have done this magazine without the two of them. They put up with a lot from me because I wanted to make this dream a reality - I can’t begin to tell you how much they sacrificed. They have

learned that money isn’t everything and that you need to pick a career that makes you happy. Devon and Dallas are also thrilled that I have found a new position where my talent and energy is well suited and that I am excited for what’s in store. There is another group of individuals I need to acknowledge, because if I didn’t have them on my side I would never have been able to create such a beautiful publication. Wayne Duchart, my incredible photographer, who would do whatever, whenever we asked him to. Lori Johnson, from Dragonfli Studio, whose creativity and talent made us one of the best looking magazines in the Okanagan. Julianna Hayes, who managed to make all our stories flow with her superior editing capabilities. Danielle Browne, from

Mitchell Press, who always made us a priority and helped us meet deadline as best as she could. I also need to thank Sharon, from ATM Book-keeping, and Tracey, who did the distribution. Special thanks to Nikki, Jim and Ryan, at Csek Creative, who helped me take the online version to a whole new level. We received a lot of compliments, emails and people stopping us on the street to tell us how much they loved our magazine, both in print and online. Where would this magazine have been without the contributors and advertisers? So many people were inspired by what they read and for some of our readers it motivated them to do more. The advertisers believed in our publication and helped keep it afloat. This magazine was a team effort, and I was proud to be the team leader. People always tell me how much my children have grown. I like to think that I have grown as well. I was just a lady with a vision and found a way to make it happen. I am not retiring because I am rich, but I will say the knowledge, friendships and connections I’ve made are worth more than money. Thanks again for being part of my journey; I hope you enjoyed all the peeks and valleys as much as I did. ABOUT THE COVER: Now that I am fifty it’s time for a new chapter in my life. Thank you for supporting Beyond 50.

Magazine Created a

New Family Submitted by Wayne Duchart

About seven years ago, a single mom came into our store to purchase a camera to take cover photos for her new magazine. Being a professional photographer for over 25 years and having done many magazine covers, I knew her chances of snapping a good cover on her own were slim to none. My suggestion was to hire a professional photographer to do the job correctly, which would showcase the new publication in the best way possible. Well, this single mom was running on a very tight budget that did not allow for this luxury. Every day I try to perform one random act of kindness, so I offered to photograph the next issue at no charge. Since then, we’ve come to adopt this single mom, Laurel, and her boys as family. To see her grow and become the fabulous person she is today is priceless. I introduced her into my Rotary club where “service above self “ is the motto. She has excelled there too, winning Rotarian of the Year and being awarded the prestigious Paul Harris award, not once but twice. Beyond 50 has blossomed into a first-class magazine thanks to Laurel’s hard work and high standards, and her

boys have grown into men to be proud of. The unity of her

family and the magazine family is one I am very happy to have been associated with this past seven years. The end of this publication means a new beginning for Laurel. Her new position with Uptown Rutland Business Association will greatly enhance Rutland’s profile. My wife Wendy and I wish only great things for this fine lady.

To See or Not To See... That Is The Question

The term, “people of vision," can mean many things to many people. Sometimes we refer to a visionary as someone who is idealistic with impractical concepts. Other times, the visionary is the strong leader who courageously follows the path of their own convictions. And often times, the visionary is the one who may stand alone, putting themselves at risk for ridicule and abandonment by others, while remaining true to themselves. But almost always, the visionary looks toward the future, sees the bigger picture, and remains hopeful for what may come. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, then 10 weeks later with leukemia. When I approached my friend Laurel and asked if I could write an article for her magazine, my intent was to share my journey with other cancer patients and their families. I was determined to face my unknown future with a positive attitude, taking responsibility for my health, and gaining knowledge that would help me to make informed decisions about my treatment. But, most importantly, I made

a vow to myself that I would laugh every day and

continue to find humour in all aspects of this new path, despite the overwhelming fear that I felt. Hopefully, I have been able to bring a smile to some who may have read my articles over the last years, while I shared some of my experiences. Every course I have attended at the BC Cancer Agency in Kelowna (and I’ve been to them all, some more than once) has provided me with valuable information and support. But the best thing about these courses was the amount of laughter that we shared. Despite the lack of alcohol and good food, these were some of the best parties I have ever been to! Who knew that cancer patients and their families could have so much fun? I learned the importance of living in the moment, and letting go of the worry that an uncertain future brings. We can appreciate what is in the here and now, rather than always looking to what will be. Perhaps the true visionary is the one who chooses to see what is right in front of them, with a clarity and understanding that will enable them to move forward, step by step, rather than by leaps and bounds. I am a continual work in progress. Most days I feel like a baby learning to walk for the first time, as I take shaky, uncalculated steps towards my future. And every time I fall on my butt, in true baby fashion, I have a moment of disbelief followed by fits of laughter (and the occasional drool). And that’s exactly what my cancer journey has been so far... a shaky walk forward with moments of disbelief, followed by a whole lot of laughter. So get your diapers on and join me for a stroll. We may not know where we will end up, but we will have some great giggles along the way! Peace out Beyond 50 Magazine... And thank you... I’ve had a blast. Angel Among Us

A Sharing Pair of Eyes

Submitted by Carrie Broughton

Derek Dadd has been visiting Irma for almost seven years and they are very close. When Derek arrives for a visit, Irma’s eyes shine and her smile never leaves her lips. Derek is a Derek retired to Nanaimo in 1992, after 25 years in the air force, and started his own business. In Nanaimo he volunteered for Kiwanis and the RCMP. In 2005 he was diagnosed with lymphoma, so he and his wife moved to the Okanagan to be closer to their kids. Derek says for some reason he really can’t explain, he always felt when he retired he would like to read to people who are blind, so he contacted CNIB. To Irma, Derek and his wife are family. In fact, recently they celebrated Irma’s 94th birthday together! Irma says that Derek thinks to do things for her before anyone else has thought of it, and she is deeply grateful for their friendship. Derek visits Irma consistently each week for at least two hours. They enjoy sitting outside together in the courtyard, or

having a coffee and a chat. Derek often brings his dog Sam to visit her as well, which she and the other residents adore. And they really love to read together. Right now Derek is reading Chicken Soup for the Senior’s Soul to Irma. He gets teary eyed when speaking about her, as she means the world to him. “She is a very, very special lady and I am lucky to know her,” he says.“She really is family.” Derek has had five different Vision Mate clients over the years, but these days he focuses his time solely on Irma. He has also volunteered as a driver, served on the Board of Directors, and helped set up CCTV reading machines for CNIB clients. Derek finished with radiation and chemotherapy in 2008 and has been in remission ever since. He is a remarkable volunteer and person, and his tireless and compassionate work with CNIB clients and staff has been a gift to the organization, and to Irma. Rutland Hospital Auxiliary to the KGH Foundation…

Celebrates 50 Years Submitted by Nancy E. Wells

PHOTOS • CONTRIBUTED

The Rutland Auxiliary operates a very successful Thrift Shop at 140 Dougall Road in Rutland, and this year it marks 50 years of being in business. The volunteers all this time have done what they do best and that is to serve the public and the community of Rutland and Kelowna with their many offerings at the Thrift Store. In turn, the revenue they raise is given to the Kelowna General Hospital to help purchase medical equipment for the ongoing enhancement of the care and comfort of the patients of KGH. The Auxiliary has also contributed to the sponsorship of a seat in the Universit y of Br itish Columbia Okanagan Medical Theatre, which is a place that is creating young doctors of the future. About $500,000 goes to the KGH Foundation’s “Take Care, Take Part” campaign, which is dedicated toward the purchase of CSR equipment.

In the years that this Auxiliary has been in operation, it has donated more than $3.5 million. Other commitments of the Rutland Auxiliary include: two $1,000 bursaries, presented yearly to Rutland Secondary students who are entering the field of Human

Medicine; donations of clothing to the Westbank Food Bank, Victory Life, Inn from the Cold, Freedom’s Door and the Women’s Shelter. It also sends clothing to many regions in Africa. The dedication of the members and the hundreds of hours of volunteer commitment, as well as donations that are received from the community at large, and the suppor t its their customers, are what give the Rutland

Auxiliary the ability to operate an organization that is a strong example of “paying it forward!” This organization has 60 members and is always recruiting new ones to help fulfill its goals. People of Vision, and Walking on the Grass:

“Please! Walk on the Grass!” Submitted by Kris Stewart

PHOTO • SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

Just because you’re over 50 and others expect you to be slowing down, doesn’t mean you can’t have vision. People with vision know that the pathway to success and fortune is littered with failure. People with vision know that the pathway to success isn’t found by doing what everyone else is. People with vision have to be willing to do what others don’t, and take a risk. When you do what others don’t do, you will encounter obstacles. And, because no one has been there yet, no one can really tell you how to get around them. You have to figure it out on your own. You’ve been on the planet long enough to know who wins and loses. The people who win are the people who have vision, and, no matter what their age, stick with it. Over the years, you’ve met naysayers, blockades and obstacles. It is through these kinds of hurdles you are able to better refine and crystallize what your vision looks like and feels like. Being a person with vision means not being afraid to do what others aren’t doing. It means you have to think your way through things and you should feel unstoppable. I don’t mean break the law, or throw away your cane; I mean at least break the boundaries holding you back from achieving your vision - whether they are people, or objects.

In a way, creating and following a vision is a little like deciding whether to walk on the safe sidewalk, or venturing on the green grass. I’ve noticed few people walk on green grass, even when there’s nothing stopping them. Why must we feel we should do as everyone else does, even when it does not make sense? I’ve also noticed that the people who walk on green grass,

taking a shortcut to somewhere, are more likely not to be risk averse, and more likely to be creative thinkers - and, yes, visionaries. They are also more likely (in my book), to be critical thinkers. As we age, the ability to use our critical thinking skills will keep our minds active. My own internal “Idiots Guide to Critical Thinking” simply tells me that I should be able to ask objective questions about the situation and decide what would make the most sense. The reverse of critical thinking is going along, doing whatever everyone else does, no matter the outcome. The more trips around the sun we have, the better we generally become at critical thinking. That’s a good thing for those over 50! Everyone’s path and everyone’s vision is unique. People who have vision remember all the naysayers who tried to keep them on the walkway that everyone else takes. When one is willing to step off of the common pathway and walk on the green grass, they are not only using critical thinking, but moving closer to their vision. Remember, “anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.” KRIS STEWART, RN, BScN, MBA is the CEO of Kelowna-based, Advanced Home Care Solutions Inc., the Okanagan’s premier full service, private, home health care agency providing in-home health, living, and home care to Okanagan seniors and other.

women are frustrated and disillusioned with online dating and the lack of results from well meaning friends. I knew there had to be a better way. Over the past 25-plus years in business, I’ve had the opportunity to participate on many projects. While many of those projects involved different products or services, the common thread was working with people and helping them achieve their goals and find what they were looking for. During the development and implementation of these projects, I had an opportunity to be involved in many areas including business development, technology (still not very good at this part), sales and marketing, training, coaching and mentoring, and recruiting the very best teams (definitely good at this part). But the part I loved the most was helping people get what they want either in a new career, a happy positive relationship or fruitful business connection. A visionary at heart, the projects I’ve had the pleasure to be part of have given me the framework and foundation to successfully open Magnetix Matchmaking. From our early beginnings in Kelowna, we have expanded to the Greater Okanagan, including Penticton, Vernon and north to Kamloops. We now support single people in Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg as well. But we’ve only just begun. Single men and women across Canada are telling us how hard it is to meet someone special. They are looking for a different approach to online dating and other methods that have been unsuccessful. They are looking for support and someone to listen to their stories. Our amazing team of Relationship Consultants is doing just that. My vision has always been to offer

Meet the dental specialist dedicated to changing your life. Dr. Chambers is a Board certified dental specialist in Prosthodontics, the area of dentistry focused on replacing missing teeth, restoring teeth and creating beautiful smiles. What is a Prosthodontist? Most people know what a prosthetic arm or leg is. Prosthodontics is simply “prosthetic or artificial teeth,” and Prosthodontists are dental specialists in the restoration and replacement of missing teeth, as well as, fixing teeth that are broken, chipped, worn or unsightly. We create beautiful healthy smiles. After four years of dental school, Dr. Chambers completed an additional three years of specialized training in Prosthodontics. It is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the Canadian Dental Association. He takes great pride in providing patients with attractive and natural looking replacement teeth. He has helped thousands of patients restore their healthy, natural and beautiful smiles. He takes great personal satisfaction in witnessing the transformation as patients become accustomed to their new look and improved

function. A straight, white smile helps you feel better, because you look better. With the latest advances in dental technology, you can now enjoy the smile that you have always wanted. With Dr. Chambers, each smile makeover is unique and highly individual. For some, a simple tooth whitening procedure may be all that is needed. For others, porcelain veneers or crowns (caps) are required to create a beautiful straight white smile. If you are suffering with dentures or partials, there is good news. Advances in implant dentistry have allowed Dr. Chambers to offer great new options that are stable, comfortable, and natural looking. Tired of loose fitting, painful dentures? Can’t eat the healthy foods that you love because of your dentures? Do you think twice before smiling or laughing? Are you tired of messy denture adhesives? There is no longer any reason to suffer with lousy dentures or partials. Smile, laugh and restore your confidence. Eat what you like without worrying your teeth will slip or fall out. A dental implant is a small, screw-like cylinder that replaces the root portion of a missing tooth. Carefully and precisely placed in the jawbone, dental implants help anchor dentures so they do not slip and they can even be used to fix your denture in place so that you will never have to remove your teeth again. Enjoy smiling, eating and life again; dental implants can be life changing. Do you have a gap in your teeth? Do missing teeth affect your chewing? Wear a partial denture that needs to be removed? Dental implants allow Dr. Chambers to replace one or more missing teeth by attaching your new teeth to the dental implant without damaging adjacent teeth. Building

Healthy Active

Older Adults

We are all aware that society, as a whole, is becoming less and less active. This inactivity puts us at a higher risk of becoming both acutely and chronically ill, both of which can lead to the loss of one’s independence. The Kelowna Family YMCA is committed to building healthy communities, which includes keeping older adults strong, healthy, and independent. Aging is a natural and inevitable process that can have an impact on one’s physical, mental, social, or emotional health. Although aging cannot be prevented, it can be done gracefully and healthfully. There is substantial evidence that physical activity can benefit an aging body, mind, and spirit. The Canadian Physical Activity Guide recommends that older adults get 30-60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity most days of the week. Studies have shown that regular physical activity can slow the decline of, or even improve one’s motor function, as well as

one’s heart and respiratory health. There is also evidence that suggests physical activity improves balance, strength, agility, and a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living. All of these aspects of health contribute to a healthy and successful aging process. Having a regular physical activity routine

has also been proven to reduce risk of chronic conditions such as cancer, stroke, heart disease, type II diabetes and more! On top of all of the physical benefits of exercise there are plenty of proven psychological and social benefits as well. Including physical activity in one’s daily routine leads to better sleep patterns, less stress, improved memory, increased

alertness, and more. There are also the benefits that come from spending time with others and making new friends. The YMCA has an amazing, researchproven program called Coach Approach to help non-exercisers or starters and stoppers make exercise part of their life. This program includes goal setting, measuring improvement, and providing tools to help prevent exercise drop-out. The Kelowna Family YMCA’s vision is about serving more than just the fittest of the fit. The Y enjoys helping people of all ages be as healthy as they can be. The Y is introducing a brand new series of classes for people over the age of 50 this fall. This series includes Yoga for 50+, Tai Chi for 50+, Functional Fitness for 50+ and more. On top of the “50+” classes, we offer over 10 aquafit classes each week, as well as specialty health programs for people with specific diagnoses or chronic conditions. YMCA Healthy Hearts is designed as a supervised physical activity program to improve and maintain a healthy heart. Y Building Better Bones is a dropin program that takes a proactive approach to maintaining bone health and preventing further bone loss for anyone who has osteopenia or osteoporosis. Y Healthy Weight is an education program designed to help educate and empower adults to take control of their life and make healthy choices to obtain a healthy weight. Find Food, Family and Fun

Italian Style Submitted by Laurel D’Andrea

If I had to pick three words to descr ibe Italians, they would be: family, passion and pride. If you have never had the pleasure of attending a dinner at the Kelowna Canadian I t a l i a n C l u b o n Lawrence Avenue, you need to go. The individuals who are part of

this organization are proud, robust and entertaining individuals. You could attend this dinner alone, yet you wouldn’t feel alone, because the members make everyone feel welcome. It was in March of 1966 when the club was first incorporated as a society. It started with 40 members but has now grown to over 150 families who are proud to be part of this association. In 1998, the clubhouse on Lawrence was purchased and the main objectives of this group were established to promote culture and education, encourage Italian activities, and assist new Italian immigrants, as well as those in need. It not only gives to and support its own, it have done a lot for our community. Here are just a few of the things KCIC have supported over the past 40 years: • In 1975, the KCIC formed a group of Italian dancers and singers, which has performed at hospitals, seniors’ homes, shopping centres, weddings, anniversaries, parades, out of town festivals and for other ethnic clubs. • In 1979, the KCIC constructed the first two bocce alleys at the Kelowna Recreation Centre, providing members and the public the entertainment of one of Italy’s most popular sports. • The KCIC has made various donations to our community at large. Every February, the club holds a social where monies are raised for the Variety Club Telethon. It has also supported

the Kelowna General Hospital, Big Brothers, Cancer Society, Japan Tsunami Relief Fund and many more. • In 1976, the club started presenting each year a bursary to a deserving child entering post secondary education. • KCIC has entered a float in the local Regatta and May Day parades. • KCIC has participated in Kelowna Folk fest, supplying ethnic food and entertainment to the public. • In 1976, 1980 and 2009, the KCIC came to the aid of its mother country, Italy, during the earthquakes. • In May 1983, the KCIC hosted the first ever B.C. provincial convention of Italian clubs, societies and organizations. • In 1984, the KCIC hosted the first ever Western Canada convention of Italian clubs, societies and organizations. • In 1991, the KCIC celebrated its 25th anniversary. • In 2011, the KCIC celebrated it’s 45th anniversary. • 2016 will mark the 50th anniversary of the club. Like I said, this group is about family, passion and pride. It is looking for new members, and if you decide to join, you will be among some of the elite Italians who have made Kelowna their home for generations: Casorso, Rampone, and Risso. My recommendations is simple: check out their website to see when the next Italian dinner is and buy a ticket. You’re guaranteed an incredible meal, lots of fun and you’ll feel like one of the family. “Mangia bene, vivi felice” translation... “eat well and live happy.”
