‘Ex Umbris’ “These works give voice to repressed stories and experiences of the migrant other. Through the suggestive application of charcoal and its erasure on the surface of the drawing, I discover the stories of my forebears. These works, whilst part of the ‘Goomiland’ universe, update that world to depict some of my contemporaries who have sought safety in this country. The rabbit represents the migrant other and the fears contained within, and is usually restricted to depictions of my immediate family. The lion suggests strength, and is a counterpoint to the rabbit’s vulnerability. However I deliberately make these links tenuous in the drawings. My aim is to suggest the emotional life of the subject and communicate a deeper level of experience.” Anton Pulvirenti
