EID MUBARAK! We barely felt the first half of this year go by. We’re sure you were also whisked through the wonderful changes and trying to keep up with the rapid pace our country has been on. And now, it seems we’re in for a June brimming not just with milestones and celebrations but the promise of new possibilities. We remember the night we listened to the royal order lifting the ban on women’s driving. The mood was congratulatory; jubilant. The following morning, it was free coffee and stacks of car fresheners for all the ladies in the house to celebrate. Fast forward to today, as women from all over the country take the wheel--- know that Destination is rooting for you. We’ve dedicated a special feature to you, which we hope will help you in your journey. As if that’s not enough to make this month special, we’re going to the World Cup and you’re coming with us! Yes, football fans, we have you covered with your very own guide to the matches.

Speaker Bader Al Rabai’a, during his segment: “Croissant or Sudan”.

In the spotlight: TedxAlrakkah Ideas worth spreading, and a brighter future

TEDxAlrakkah was a half-day event, all inspiration, creativity, and positive energy. Over 500 attendees made their way to the talks, which included 12 short, TedTalks-style, presentations, lasting around 15 minutes each. The talks were all tailored to highlight extraordinary, 8

When great ideas find a platform, the extraordinary happens. On April 21, the region was in a treat of tremendous proportions, with TedxAlrakkah. Under the patronage of Deputy Prince of the Eastern Region Ahmed bin Fahd bin Salman, TedxAlrakkah was held in Kempinski Al Othman Hotel in the city of Khobar.

thought-provoking ideas, under the evening’s theme: What’s Next? The theme strived to answer the pressing question that arises in the wake of great discoveries: what’s next? How do we move forward? How do we take what we know, discovered, or unveiled, and turn it into a reality that can serve our communities? The secret to – and beauty of – human development stems from the relentless quest to explore the unknown, overcome difficulties to achieve greatness, and build a brighter, more hopeful future.

This is how creativity is birthed and accomplishments attained. The speakers were carefully selected to represent the regions’ potential. Their passions answered the question with their unique ideas, boundless creativity, positive energy, and out-ofthe-box thinking. The speakers and stars of the evening were Saif Al Garawwi, Ali Al Bahrani, Mohammed Al Shahrani, Ghadeer Abu Al Makarem, Abdullah Al Hawas, Abdulrahman Al Bassam, Yasmeen Al Jadawwi, Ahmed Al Fuhaid, Ali Ba’aqba, Bader Al Rabai’a, Hiba Al Mubayyed, and Faisal Badghaish.

Aside from the talks, TedxAlrakkah hosted an exhibition featuring services, initiatives, non-profit organizations, and programs that would aid the public in turning their ideas into reality. The exhibitors included the Business Management Club, Giving Hands, Prince Sultan Fund for Women Development, and 9/10th, among others. TedxAlrakkah served as a platform for great ideas to spread, bright minds to connect, and possibilities to turn into reality. Web: tedxalrakkah.com

KIDNEY FRIEND: SAAD AL SUBAIT A journey of strength, hopefulness and spreading awareness By Dalia Darweesh

16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2018

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Saad Al Subait, and I was born with one kidney. I was around 22 years old when I was diagnosed with kidney failure. My sister donated her kidney to me in December of 2016, and my life has been transformed ever since. I decided to start a Twitter and Instagram account, called Kidney Friend, strictly to help those with kidney failure, and to guide them on their journeys.

What helped you throughout your journey?

Acceptance. Coming from my side first and from those around me. I knew that I had to accept it, and to come to terms with the fact that this will be a life-changing experience, and that the only way to adjust to it, is to embrace it. Or, to let it consume me negatively. I chose to look at it as a new lifestyle. My family and those around me were very supportive, and never made me feel different.

STAFF PHOTO/ABDULRAHMAN AL BINALI

What made you want to help people?

When I was going to the hospital for my dialysis treatments, I had a habit of speaking to those who were coming for the same reason as me; I wanted to speak to someone who understood what I was going through. I was seeking guidance and support, aside from the medical help that I was receiving. I resorted to online research. After my kidney transplant surgery, I thought of starting a Twitter account called Kidney Friend, to help patients who are going through kidney failure.

Tell us more about Kidney Friend.

The account aims to spread awareness through educational, medical, and nutritional information, that benefit kidney failure patients. I started with a twitter account, by re-tweeting beneficial information, and tweeting some from my own personal experience as well. Throughout, I developed connections with doctors and specialists and decided to collaborate with them, to be able to provide comprehensive, beneficial content.

What are your plans for the future?

My future plans entail getting more involved with the community, through different outreach programs. I want to be able to reach out, and help people as much as I can. My followers are very few now, but that doesn’t matter to me, because I know that they are the ones who are benefiting from this account.

A piece of advice that you can give to our readers.

Awareness comes first. I would advise parents to be more aware with their children regarding their health; making sure to get regular check-ups. One thing that most people never pay attention to is drinking enough water; it is one of the contributing factors of kidney failure. Last words I would like to emphasis on: eat healthy, drink more water, exercise, and live happy. kidney_friend kidney.friend

HER FIRST SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE

She joined the founders of The National Home Health Care Foundation (NHHCF). The foundation allows patients with stable health to be treated and cared for in the comfort of their homes. It first started out as a charity organization with 300 members but then grew into a wellequipped center. Prior to the foundation, this service was only provided at two hospitals, but now it is in almost all hospitals nationwide.

CHANGES IN THE NON-PROFIT SECTOR

In the past, participation in the organized non-profit sector was low and its management was modest. The sector has now improved through developmental courses for its employees and management. Contact between this sector, its beneficiaries, and its supporters due to modern communication channels and techniques have enhanced. It no longer largely depends on donations, but on generating money through development and organized work.

BISAT ALREEH

The exhibition aims at stimulating the economy and helps members of society engage in commercial and touristic work, it also provides women with job opportunities. The event is also sponsored by The National Home Health Care Foundation as it believes in its importance and its role in economical growth.

Sanad Children’s Cancer Support Association provides the needed care and support for children with cancer and their families of low income and encourages others to help them as well. Treatment results have shown an 80 percent increase in recovery regarding different types of cancers affecting children, which is a motivation to work harder.

HER FATHER

“My father was my guiding force. He was fair, responsible and committed to high morals,” said Princess Adelah, who lives by these qualities.

PARENTING FAMILIES

She contributed in The National Family Safety Program to ensure the safety of families and help combat the consequences of broken and unsafe families, such as malignant and unpatriotic behaviour. She advocates the importance of a strong family unit and their involvement in their children’s lives.

WORKING WOMEN

Princess Adelah believes women need clear laws that guarantee their rights and facilitates their employment. Businesses must encourage female work force, train them and also develop their skills.

She understands that parenting gets more challenging with each new generation. She is trying to instil in her children the same morals that have been instilled in her and their father. To her, communication with kids is key as well as being a good role model to them.

CHALLENGES SHE FACED

These included false societal traditions that aren’t part of religion and only hinder development. Other obstacles were due to managerial problems. Princess Adelah sets an example on how women can lean on each other and be positive social enablers. Her dedication to lead development initiatives shows us that there is work to be done and we can be part of it.

The Man Who Met Himself Saud Al Eidi, the traveler of worlds. By Tyma Hezam

20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2018

There’s a whole world out there, and there’s an unspoken one inside of us. Saud Al Eidi chose to wander in both. When I sat down with Al Eidi, the thousands of miles crossed were manifested in his calmness. With both pauses revealing a longing to be far away, and set intentions to stay grounded.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD

I ask Al Eidi why he travels. “Who am I?” he semianswered, “that’s the question.” Ah yes, a question for an answer. I knew by now the story of the self-discovery voyage has already begun. “The human being will never stop looking for answers to that question. He will die not knowing, but at least in travel, he finds some sort of comfort. It’s an instinct.” he explained. Al Eidi decided to leave his Khobar-raised, drenched-inhometown-comfort, self behind and start his odyssey. “I am a man of many ponderings. Traveling is the only thing that fulfilled my hunger for answers.” Eighty-four countries and twelve mountain summits around the world later, he now sees home from a completely different lens. Al Eidi goes on discussing how the process of traveling in its true meaning can help an individual disassociate himself from his culture and customs to become an anthropologist in a place he once called home. It is a crucial, healthy, and very underestimated process. Where the human being starts to peel off his layers, and go back to basics: a traveler of

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 21

Al Eidi reasoned his passion behind Eastern Travelers, his establishment of travel and training agency. “I want to make sure more people around me experience this: to be a traveler in your own hometown.” Saud further explained, “I am not my travels, I am not the miles I crossed, I am ‘nothing to be mentioned’, therefore I will focus on what makes a place a place, the human being. And I aim, through my agency, to allow others to do the same thing.” Thus, Eastern Travelers strives to redefine travel, while introducing “adventure tourism” to the average traveler. Al Eidi organizes affordable life-changing journeys around the globe for all the wanderers out there.

worlds. Saud explained that there are three types of people: the traveler, the tourist, and the visitor. The traveler is about the people, the tourist is about the place, the visitor is about the task. The traveler becomes part of the community of the place he’s in. The tourist goes sightseeing. The visitor is on a particular mission with a time-limit. He discussed how many people believe they are “traveling” when in fact they are touring. The tourist Al Eidi once was, is long gone. “There is nothing wrong with tourism. It is just that most would consider traveling to be about the sights, but the truth is, it’s about the man. How did you affect the people you met, and vice versa.”

With kids of a refugee Camp in Greece

Leaving comfort zones, putting away structural trips, and carving one’s own path are some of the few mantras Al Eidi preaches. I asked him how he can afford his travels, as many use this as an excuse for it being too expensive, he broke it down in a simple manner. “If I didn’t learn it by having a very small amount of money, I wouldn’t be who I am today. It all started when I asked my father to lend me a small loan when I was young, and I began traveling very efficiently.” “Traveling requires a very small budget, if it goes over the limit, you are a tourist.” There was a certain type of shedding that happened

when Al Eidi transitioned from a tourist to a traveler. “You stop the sightseeing tours, and you start actually looking.” Al Eidi became a traveler when he crossed off his infamous list: “To-Detach List.” This list is a number of entities a traveler must be okay to detach themselves from. Starting with a routine, a desk job, family obligations, personal possessions, comfortable accommodation, and so on.

behind will free a traveler’s mind to explore, have no expectations, and truly let go of all notions of how a life should be.

Al Eidi went on and stressed the fact that any type of attachment, whether it’s for objects, a location, or human beings is lethal when it comes to traveling. Leaving that

Far away, miles through the Great Algerian desert, Saud Al Eidi found the reason for his longing to travel. The human. On the other side of the mountains, he met himself.

Goals and Ambitions

The program ensures the implementation of its specific objectives in different regions of the Kingdom. Given the nature of the program, it will contribute to the wide range of goals and aspirations set out in Vision 2030. There are 23 Quality of Life Program objectives identified, including four objectives directly related to the concept of lifestyle: • Promotion of sporting activities • Excellence in several sports regionally and globally. • Development of diverse entertainment opportunities to meet the needs of the population.

FOUNDATIONS OF TOMORROW Investing in the Kingdom’s Quality of Life As part of the initiatives meant to fulfill the Vision 2030, the Council of Economic and Development Affairs launched the Quality of Life Program 2020. Its main goal is to strengthen cultural and economic foundations of the Kingdom. Government capital expenditure will surpass SR50 billion by 2020, and investments available to the private sector will amount to around SR23.7 billion for the same period. QoL is also envisioned to increase the nonoil GDP by 20% by 2020.

Saudi Cities Among the Top 100 Cities in the World

The overarching goal of the Quality of Life Program 2020 is to see at least three Saudi cities included in the list of the world’s top 100 most livable cities by 2030. While the overall aspiration focuses on three cities, the program covers all aspects of Saudi society and is dedicated to improving the lifestyle of citizens and residents all over the country.

The program also promotes the Kingdom's contribution to arts and culture through the elevation and development of seven cultural and artistic fields (visual arts, performing arts, filmmaking, poetry, literature, design, and national heritage). The program includes plans for the creation of an island for arts and culture in Jeddah, the opening of 45 cinemas, 16 theaters, 42 libraries, and the Royal Arts Complex in Riyadh.

The program aims to elevate the sports industry in the country, providing support for sports clubs, providing 491 suitable locations for training and practice, as well as giving the public access to international sporting events to be hosted within the Kingdom.

SAUDI NOMAD Backpackers on a Mission

Ibrahim Al Shaya

Creating a new breed of Saudi globetrotters By Jou Pabalate

Enter Saudi Nomad, a social enterprise on a mission to strengthen and promote the culture of backpacking among the Saudi youth. It was first conceived by Saif Al Qarawi and Ibrahim Al Shaya, who were later joined by a participant turned guide, Ibrahim Matsah. These young men recently graduated from KFUPM in Sharqiya, with bachelor degrees in software engineering.

40 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2018

"We started backpacking as students; on average, the uni provides around SR 800 as a stipend. We'd save some of it till we had enough for a trip. To make that budget work, you'll need to plan right – prioritize your needs over your wants," said Al Shaya. Having a shared passion for backpacking, they decided to start Saudi Nomad to encourage people to look at traveling in a different light. They saw it as an opportunity for their peers to broaden their horizons and understanding of other cultures, while in a way re-introducing Saudis to the global community. "You learn so much about yourself when you get out of your comfort zone. You don't have to spend a fortune to go on an adventure," said Al Qarawi. There's a difference between having a passion and actually running a sustainable business based on it, though. The demarcation is not lost on these socialpreneurs.

STAFF PHOTO/ABDULRAHMAN AL BINALI

In the past, travel was considered a luxury reserved for the deep-pocketed. The thought of taking a trip to multiple destinations on a shoestring budget seemed like a far-fetched dream. Saudi travelers in particular have been stereotyped as opulent vacationers, often preferring the comfort of 5-star hotels and shopping adventures on Oxford Street or Champs Elysses. While there is nothing wrong with enjoying the finer things in life, nowadays, adventurers can discover the world without breaking their bank accounts.

"As an enterprise, we provide affordable trips for travelers who are new to backpacking, or would like to experience a new place with a group. To make it sustainable, Saudi Nomad shouldn't be about us three – we'd like to get more guides who can run their own trips and we can eventually pass on the torch to them, and so on."

On our trip to India, we hitchhiked, commuted, ate local food, and stayed in hostels. We knew there would be bumps along the way, and in fact, that's the beauty of backpacking – you learn to roll with and appreciate the unexpected. Once, our group got stuck in a café in a tiny village, and it was our favorite time together – just huddled there, sharing stories, laughing, and being in the moment. — Saif Al Qarawi

By the time this story is published, Saudi Nomad would be deep in the thick of Nepal. The booking for which was full within two days of its announcement. When asked what their dream trip to organize is, the unanimous answer was South America. “We’re planning a few trips in the future, before eventually stepping back ourselves and letting other experienced backpackers take Saudi Nomad forward. Our focus is getting people interested in this form of traveling. When someone from the group embarks on their own trip, it means we’ve succeeded in what we’ve set out to do.”

MEET SAUDI AUTHOR

IBRAHIM AL BASSAM

STAFF PHOTO/ABDULRAHMAN AL BINALI

By Dalia Darweesh

44 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2018

They say that traveling is the best education you will get. Meeting new people, visiting new places, and experiencing unique and fun adventures are perhaps things that are outside of one’s comfort zone, but not for author Ibrahim Al Bassam. Born in Kuwait, he has lived in Iraq, Jordan, Korea, and Holland for parts of his life. After studying Industrial Engineering, he obtained his MBA in Marketing. Since a very young age, he loved books, especially comics. However, he never identified himself as an author, until 2016. As an avid cyclist, he decided one day to travel to Europe on his bicycle.“When I hit the biking road in Switzerland, I had overwhelming thoughts and feelings. I felt like I needed to document my experience.” Ibrahim received some great feedback on his first book, A Bicycle Journey into Europe, from his friends and those around him. But he discounted their opinions at first, thinking they were biased. “It is interesting that I had absolutely no idea whether readers would enjoy it or not,” he told me. However, one day, a friend sent him a tweet from the Embassy of Switzerland in Riyadh, recommending his book to European travelers. When the legislation of women driving first came out, Ibrahim was sharing his thoughts and ideas with a friend, on the different obstacles and difficulties that women might face in Saudi. Hence, an idea formed in Ibrahim’s head. Why

not, write a book, a guide, from his own personal experiences with driving in Saudi, dedicated to women in Saudi. He shared The Six Golden Rules to Avoid Dangers on Saudi Roads, in his latest book, Your Green Way. When we asked him about his inspiration for writing these books, he said, “I believe that my engineering background has influenced the types of books I read and write. My books are based on practical experiences and true stories. One might wonder what Ibrahim’s writing process is: “I have to get in a certain mood to write. Not anywhere, and not anytime.” He explained to us that he thinks of his writing experience as an escape, to disconnect from life. He switches off his phone, and sits at a place where he can be alone, but still surrounded by people; a coffee shop would be an ideal place, he said. Ibrahim’s reading preferences vary through time. Currently, he’s reading on history sociology, and travel. His all time favorite publication is The Economist, in addition to

articles by Najeeb Al Zamil and Abdullah Al Maghlooth. “Many people approach me saying, I want to write a book, just like you did,” Ibrahim said. However, he believes that the challenges that face writers here are perhaps the lack of guidance and information given on writing and publishing. Readers and writers also lack a platform to meet and connect. Ibrahim suggests book fairs as an option. “I think that we lack the borrowing culture. If it’s implemented, I think it will boost reading in Saudi.” Lastly, some great advice Ibrahim has left us with: “Always try something new. Life happens outside of your comfort zone.” We can find Ibrahim Al Bassam’s books at Jarir Bookstore, and different book fairs. They’re also available in Ibrahim’s accessories store COCO88 in Rashid Mall and Dhahran Mall. Email: jmrell@yahoo.com ibrahim.albassam

SILVER SCREEN SWEETHEART Abdulmohsen Al Nemer, gracing television for decades. By Dalia Darweesh

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 47

Who else remembers the days and nights where we would anxiously await our favorite TV show to start? May it be during Ramadan, where we all gather right after futoor, or in the summer, where we meet with friends, and catch up on our favorite shows. We had the pleasure of meeting Abdulmohsen Al Nemer, Khaleeji television superstar, and during this exclusive interview, we learned more about him personally, his acting style, and his thoughts on what Saudi has been witnessing lately. “When a person is born, they’re born with certain interests, likes and dislikes; it’s human nature. There might be things that dictate what we choose to play when we’re young,” Abdulmohsen told us. Abdulmohsen’s acting style is what distinguishes him from other actors, hence, why we anticipate his shows, every year. From a very young age, he was interested in acting, unlike the kids in his neighborhood, who were very passionate about football. Abdulmohsen’s first plunge towards acting wasn’t a typical one. In fact, since he couldn’t learn acting back in the day, he had no other option but to perform a small play, in his neighborhood, in the hopes of being discovered by Nasser Al Mubarak, who was a producer in the neighborhood then. “I was expecting him to pick me for his next show. Unfortunately,

he didn’t, and it was a big shock to me.” Nasser came to find out, and later made it up, by offering Abdulmohsen a role in one of his plays, titled Bait Min Leef. It was the second theatrical production by the Saudi Association for Culture and Arts in Dammam, back in 1980. After the success of Abdulmohsen’s acting, in 1981, Mohammed Al Mufarreh, an actor and screenwriter, asked him to star in a series titled Al Shatir Hassan. From that point onwards, Abdulmohsen knew that he was going through a transitional point in his life. He couldn’t walk around without being recognized. Since this fame came at the early age of 14, it costed

him his teenagehood, “what comes with fame is the image that you’re responsible of portraying; you’re looked at as a role model.” As an actor with vast roles, we wondered what Abdulmohsen’s favorite role was. Finjan Al Damm won, directed by Laith Hijjo and written by Adnan Al Oudahm; Abdulmohsen was the only Khaleeji actor on it, “I truly loved seeing myself in this role.” The reason why Abdulmohsen resonated well with his role is the fact that it reminded him of a story about a man from central Spain called Don Quixote, obsessed with chivalrous acts, as he tries to accomplish his goals, and goes on a quest of self-searching.

His Ramadan shows for 2018 include Etir Al Rooh, costarring Huda Hussain and produced by Mohammed Al Gaffas, a Bahraini producer. He also starred in Al Khataya Al Ahsr, on MBC, written by Hussain Al Mahdy and produced by Ali Al Ali. Another exciting role he played this Ramadan is in the series Haroon Al Rasheed. We asked Abdulmohsen about his thoughts on the recent developments in Saudi, “these are not changes. They’re simply ways of spreading awareness, on what already exists in Saudi; the curtains are only being lifted.” He explained how Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s courage is unveiling matters that have already been present in Saudi, for years. On his thoughts about movie theaters in Saudi, “we have skilled Saudi talent, from actors and producers, to photographers and screenwriters. This new law provides an outlet for these talents, to produce, improve, and grow.” His future goal is not to only be an actor, but also a filmmaker.

A CONVERSATION WITH

ABDULLAH YASAWY On bringing life into photos. By Zara Murray

FORM OF EXPRESSION: COLORIZING PHOTOGRAPHS

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a student at the Arab Open University studying English language and literature. I have a passion for all things visual; I love movies both old and new, especially superhero movies. My brothers used to read comic books, so this became my form of escape.

Can you describe the time when you first realized that creating was something you had to do?

My father made me take an English/computer course that I didn’t want to take, but it taught me the basics of Photoshop. Afterwards, my father handed me an old black and white, worn and torn photograph; a picture of himself with my grandfather, uncles, and aunts. I told him that I would fix it, so I restored the image and then colorized it. When I finally showed it to my father, he was in disbelief! This was when I knew I had to keep experimenting with colorizing old photographs.

Elizabeth Taylor artwork printed for Behance exhibit.

50 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2018

First of all, I make sure my hands and wrists are completely bare and then I can start. Depending on the photograph, I listen to music relevant to the time in the picture. For example, when I’m working on a photograph of King Faisal, I’ll listen to music from the same era to inspire me.

STAFF PHOTO/AL BINALI ABDULRAHMAN

What kind of creative routines do you have?

What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever created? Why is it special to you?

I colorized a photograph of Elizabeth Taylor that was displayed at the Behance exhibition, my first exhibition ever! I paid close attention to details on this piece; I researched what bathroom tiles were like back then, and I think people really appreciated the time and effort I put into this particular piece. The feedback and compliments I received were so positive.

The late King Fahd and Ronald Reagen in Washington D.C., in 1985.

What inspires you?

My family and friends. My grandfather taught me a lot about history and how important it is to remember where we came from. My father supports me in everything I do. My mother is always amazed by the work I create. Hearing the opinions of the people closest to me, encourages me to keep at it.

Yasawy Edit

You're at a restaurant to meet with people. Who are you meeting for dinner?

Clark Kent because I grew up watching Superman cartoons on TV. Malcolm X because he fought for a lot, at a time where it wasn’t easy at all. And King Faisal, I admire him a lot, for his achievements and what he stood up for.

Do you have any final words for our readers?

Listen to your parents! Even if they push you, it will probably (definitely) pay off. superbimagestudios

HINDAMME SEASON III A talk about fashion and Saudi, with designer Mohammed Khoja. By Dalia Darweesh

Hindamme Season III takes us to faraway galaxies, with astrological symbols, and a touch of our Arabian culture. Mohammed Khoja also released a series of collectible bomber jackets, commemorating Saudi women driving.. 56 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2018

Tell us about Season III of HINDAMME.

Season III continues my East meets West concept for HINDAMME by exploring the role of the universe and its relationship in the lives of early Arabs, and what it means to us today. An otherworldly narrative, inspired heavily by mysticism. A few recurring signature themes include vintage space travel-related stamps from the Arabian Gulf, gold zodiac embroidered pieces, kimono style shirts for men, couture style sequin bombers and Arabic calligraphy statement pieces and T-shirts. A bold take in terms of fabrics and detailing, yet I feel is very wearable and versatile, with a clash between high fashion and streetwear. I want to create a sense of escapism to my wearer.

What are your thoughts on current improvements in Saudi?

I am extremely optimistic about the potential of the Kingdom. With this new progressive push, I hope there will be more efforts to support the establishment of a fashion infrastructure. I hope to become a part of that, and help shape it.

Let's talk about your exclusive "June 24, 2018" bomber jackets; the message and the vision.

I was personally very moved by the decision of his Majesty King Salman to lift the ban on women to drive in Saudi Arabia. I wanted to commemorate this decision

in my own way by creating a series of collectible jackets that pay tribute to the symbolic date, in which women will be able to start their engines in both its Gregorian format in English and Hijri in Arabic. I’d like to show the world that we are proud of our progress and direction. As a designer, I want to be able to project people’s energy. To me, these bombers are not only a reflection of Saudi society alone, as I feel they pay tribute to a decision that represents the general concept of empowerment.

I created three different color ways, one with a black and green gradient featuring embroidered Saudi medals that I designed in gold, and two other black ones which are subtler and feature platinum embroidered medals or gold.

Any Exclusive Sneak Peeks for Destination?

Although I haven’t revealed my references for the next season yet, I’m willing to give you a preview! I am focusing on wildlife, flora and fauna of the Arabian Peninsula as an inspiration, while consulting with a new age Saudi traveler and artist. I’m also working closely with a furniture designer to hopefully create a line of collectible furniture pieces that feature Al Qatt Al Aseeri and Sadu patterns. Looking forward, I want to focus on positioning HINDAMME as a global fashion brand; not to limit myself to fashion alone. I want to prove to myself that someone from this region can reach global influence, with work that is locally inspired. Web: hindamme.com Email: mfkhoja@gmail.com moekhoja

SHOES DRAMA AND

FOR DESTINATION

THE RETAIL APOCALYPSE A millennial’s perspective.

Us millennials can’t recall the last time we cruised the mall to shop. For us, we prefer the “in and out,” method – and that’s if we even go ourselves. Often times we prefer to send our drivers with our cash in an envelope or armed with our credit card and pin number. Our purchase has already been made via WhatsApp “VIP” customer service, or

58 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2018

a casual DM on Instagram. This is how we shop. This is our on-the-ground retail experience; and it’s currently non-existent. Many retailers and brands may not like this “doomsday” outlook when it comes to their brick & mortar, old school approach, but the truth is in the numbers: In 2017, 8,642 malls closed down in the United

States alone, and a 25 percent of malls are expected to close in the next five years. The Kingdom’s mega malls just seem to be expanding, but while they are increasing by the square foot, foot traffic is not – as many retailers have been reporting stagnate sales. The complete shutdown of physical retail stores and a

shift toward total dependence on e-commerce in the future would seem inevitable; especially when you can just as easily get that same dopamine-fueled “shopper’s high” when you unbox an Ounass package, as you get walking out of AlKhayyat Center with a new Chanel oversized bag and Dior kitten heels. Yet, why is Amazon, the e-commerce genius, suddenly opening retail stores? Why is H&M fooling people with non-branded pop-ups across London? Because physical points-of-sale are still relevant to the millennial shoppers. To understand why, just take a look at our Instagram feed; it’s filled with picture-perfect bloggers with daily pictures of their avocado toast brunch, hot Saudi “dentists” we’re mentally dating, and modelthin brunettes with sponsored #OOTD pictures all over London. And what do they have in common? They’re part of the in-crowd. Us millennials no longer relate to promotions or extended sales, Rubaiyat! Or visual merchandising spectacles, no matter how cool they are, Gucci! We want the lifestyle, not just the outfit. We want to be with the cool people at the cool pop-up, where we can be seen… through a Snapchat filter, of course. We want the YSL mini specs, but most importantly

H&M Beach Pop Up Store at the Hague’s coastal suburb of Scheveningen

we want the attitude and #GirlSquad that goes with it. We want the Yeezys almost as much as we want the hype around the story of how we acquired them. We want our collections “dropped,” not launched. It’s basic retail Darwinism: stores need to evolve before they go extinct. So what can brands and boutiques do? Hold a bazaar every other week; curate interactive pop-ups in the middle of Red Sea Mall; or create capsule collections

targeting Instagram street style addicts; basically implement a more integrated in-store shopping experience that focuses on inclusion. iMirror, Memomi, and Size Stream are some of the ways technology is being used to enhance the retail experience for the Snap-addicted generation. So retailers, shoesanddrama. com are giving you the very simple, winning formula: Sell us the experience, and we’ll happily purchase that $2,000 designer bag we don’t actually need!

HIDDEN GEMS

What’s behind our obsession with these precious stones? Do you remember morning trips to the souq with your mom, begging her to buy you oddly shaped colorful stones as a child? They were always mismatched and weren’t necessarily valuable, but were amongst some of your most prized possessions. These little gemstones have made a comeback. Once they’ve been cut, polished, and placed into jewelry, they create some of the most timeless accessories. Gemstones are the result of the earth’s energies, being applied to raw matter through natural processes. Some of which take millions of years to create both precious, and semi-precious stones. They are still being discovered today, and each

gemstone contains its’ own story, distinctive color, and individual birthplace. Nowadays, jewelry designers are incorporating various gemstones into their designs. One of the big names in the industry is Azza Fahmy, who takes pride in preserving techniques used thousands of years ago, to construct her intricate creations, placing stones so thoughtfully throughout her collections. Another big name in the business is Danafisi, utilizing cutting edge craftsmanship, and sourcing only the best precious stones. Her collections aim to tell a story to each of her wearers.

The beauty of precious stones is that they’re not only about jewelry and accessories, as they can be used in artwork, sabhas, home décor, and much more. If you want to add a unique touch to your everyday jewelry, (and believe us, you would want to), we have found a couple of stores that are easily accessible to all of us. We’ll get to pick and choose from an array of gemstones, sourced locally and abroad. Whether you want to buy ready-made jewelry, or want to customize your own, you’ll find many options from necklaces, to bracelets, rings, earrings, or individual gemstones.

HUSUN’S charming subhas and necklaces are anything but basic. Take their agate necklaces as an example, it would be the perfect accent to your outfit. The necklace comes with a silver charm attached to it, with beautiful Arabic words and sayings.

you. All in all, it’s just a great opportunity to show off your creativity by coming up with unique herb and flower combinations that complement each other.

WHEN? The Usbah that you would wear for evening occasions and weddings is different from what’s worn during the day when your head is constantly under the sun. Not all flowers handle the heat and keep their good smell, while other flowers surprise you by only smelling better then.

Be sure to wear flowers in your hair By Lamies Ali

I introduce to you: the Usbah.

WHO?

An Usbah is a crown made with different flowers and herbs and worn proudly on the head. It uses many common types including the Hala tree flower (kadi), basil and the various types of Arabian Jasmine (foll), as well as the likes of rue, coleus, hyacinths, elder and daffodils.

Think flower crowns can’t be masculine? The men of Tihamah happily prove you wrong as Usbahs are worn by both men and women. While men’s crowns are generally narrower, there aren’t any strict rules about it. Ladies, however, occasionally add a matching flower necklace to the Usbah on their head for extra glamour on special occasions.

WHERE?

WHY?

Usbahs are part of the folk wear in the Tihamah regions (southern areas of the Kingdom), popping up more and more the closer you get to the mountains.

Not only does an Usbah make you look nice, it also makes you smell nice. And, if you’re suffering from a headache or cold, all the herb-y goodness soothes the pain and calms

La Crème

de la Crème Cream never tasted this good. By Dalia Darweesh

We were lucky to be taken away to Singapore, for a wonderful experience that involved meeting International chefs, experiencing new cultures, and last but certainly not least, eating lots of dessert! La Crème de la Crème is a yearly event organized by the French Dairy Board (CNIEL) that brings together 11 critically acclaimed chefs to create perfectly tasteful and delicious pastries for a new edition of La Crème de la Crème recipe book. French, soft, velvety cream, and Valrhona chocolate, were the themes for this year’s event. On the first day, we headed to the Food & Hotel Asia Exhibition at Singapore Expo, where the Asian Pastry Cup was also taking place; different chefs were competing to present the best pastries in front of a panel. We toured around the Food & Hotel Asia Exhibition, where different exhibitors showcased delicious pastries. Anything you can think of from croissants, to breads, sweet and savory pastries, you’ll find there; it was pastry heaven. We also attended a cheese-pairing presentation

PERSONAL FITNESS TRAINERS Pick the best one for you! By Mai Kholief

Exercising regularly with an expert ensures you reach your goals, keeps you motivated, and decreases injury risks. Over the past couple of years, the number of fitness trainers, studios, and gyms has increased significantly in Jeddah as we are becoming more aware of the importance of exercise and healthy diets.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind before choosing a personal trainer: 76 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JUNE 2018

CREDENTIALS

This is by far THE most important one on the list. A fitness trainer needs to take courses from accredited organizations (e.g. The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), The American Council on Exercise (ACE), and International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)), before being able to coach people. Other specialized courses such as CrossFit or Les Mills also provide trainers with a strong base. Don’t be afraid to ask where your trainer got their certification from.

LOCATION

Consider your habits carefully – are you willing to take a car for more than 20-30 minutes to get to your workout? Do you prefer a location within walking distance from your home? Or do you prefer working out immediately after finishing work?

COST

Based on experience, costs can range vastly between trainers depending on their certifications, specialty, and location. Before you start searching, make sure you have a budget range in mind.

EXPERIENCE

Practice makes perfect; the more trainers coach, the more experience they have. Another vital aspect of experience is the ability to provide the best cues – modifying exercises according to your level and needs, and showing and correcting good form.

PERSONALITY

This is a very personal one. Consider things like what motivates you – do you prefer a coach on the tougher side, or do you do well under positive reinforcement? For best results, your trainer should appreciate your progress and also push you outside of your comfort zone.

PROGRESS

Your trainer needs a tracking method to see if your hard work is paying off. It also allows you to be accountable and motivates you towards the right direction.

AVAILABILITY

Being consistent with your training program and attending classes is vital to reaching your goals. It is useful to check with the trainer their schedule, how many clients have in one class, and if you can set a schedule and/or make changes regularly. Also ask how far in advance you have to book your spot and what the cancellation policy is. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a fitness trainer and ask them questions to guide you through your fitness journey. Make sure it’s someone who will bring out the best in you!
