HELLO AGAIN, SHARQIYA. When we first began to prepare for this issue, we found ourselves wondering how to go about it. Initially, this issue is supposed to be all about shopping. But what aspect of shopping should we focus on? Aside from the conventional practice, we wanted to take a step back and, well, look back at trade, in its most basic element. Our Special Feature this issue did just that. We pay tribute to merchants of trade that are integral to the region, who remind us of simpler times, and conduct their business with pride. And what better way to do that than with a photo essay that truly illustrate how, photos, indeed, can be worth thousands of words. We also had the privilege to sit with the extraordinary Dr. Saleh Al Shebil, professor of Marketing at KFUPM, who taught us what it takes to be better at anything we do and the boundless benefits of investing in oneself.

The many walls of Art is Eastern initiative.

10 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APIRL 2018

Graffiti, or street art, is artwork outside of the context of traditional art venues, such as walls or the sides of buildings. Initially associated with negative connotations, this form of self-expression is a popular method of convey messages particularly those of provocative nature. As of late, the concept began to slowly shift. Currently, graffiti can express concepts and ideas that evoke positivity and unicity amongst a community. Dawi Gallery, based in the city of Khobar, recently launched and executed an initiative titled Art is Eastern, held under the patronage of princess Abeer bint Faisal bin Turki, promoting street art in Sharqiya. This initiative did not only focus on retaining our culture and heritage, but to explore it via contemporary art. More than 20 Saudi graffiti artists from different cities of the Kingdom worked for 10 days to turn a neighborhood in one of the oldest districts of

Khobar, Bayounia, into a work of art. Visitors were able to watch the artists work on their masterpieces live, which was taking place from Feb. 15-25. As soon as you take a stroll in this neighborhood, you will instantly notice the different vibrant works of art on the old walls. You won’t help but feel inspired and appreciative, of how a simple idea like this, can mean so much to the community, turning plain walls into murals of awe-striking art. Art is Eastern instigated an artistic and cultural dialogue,

stating that art is not for a certain social class, or is only meant to be found in galleries. “Art is for everyone,” Mdawi Al Baz, artist and founder of Dawi Gallery, tells us. Spearheading this initiative was a life-long dream of hers and the support it has received only confirms how important of a project Art is Eastern is.Art is Eastern is located between Uqair and 7th St., Bayouniya. WELCOMING GRIT

INTO OUR CLASSROOMS By Yumna Khan

According to psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth, grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is all about being consistent in your effort and keeping at it despite setbacks and failures. And contrary to our beliefs, it is completely unrelated to one’s level of intelligence or 12 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APIRL 2018

abilities and talents. What makes a person gritty is the presence of a growth mindset.

A Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is one where basic qualities like intelligence, talents and abilities are not set in stone, but can instead be improved through consistent effort. When this idea is instilled in students and classrooms, the results are astounding. Armed with the knowledge that their skills and abilities are not permanent, students tend

to take up more challenges and get back up sooner after taking a fall. On the other hand, students with a fixed mindset – those who believe their abilities and IQ levels are permanent and will remain that way – tend to remain interested in tasks allocated to them as long as they’re achieving good results, and maintaining thier grades. As soon as they face a setback or make a mistake that leads to a negative outcome, they lose interest and are easily discouraged from continuing.

SOURCE PHOTO/THECITYSCHOOL.EDU.SA

With the commencement of the school year, it’s a great time for educators to familiarize themselves with one of the most important contributing factors of success – grit, and the actions or mindsets that lead to it.

Grit in the Classroom

To promote a growth mindset as an educator, for starters, instead of praising ability or intelligence, praise effort. Notice the thought process, the choices and the strategy the student uses in order to achieve an outcome. Don’t ignore the outcome completely, either; ensure you always celebrate their success and always connect it to the thought process your student went through in order to achieve it. When the student fails at something, don’t

show disapproval nor brush it under the carpet. Instead, take the moment to teach them that mistakes are part of the learning process. They help you grow.

athlete or an artist, an educator or a medical professional, having a growth mindset and the belief that your persistent effort can improve your skills and abilities.

Teach students to set SMART goals (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely). Goals set this way are more rewarding as you can easily see their progress towards the outcome.

You can start talking to your children about the struggles you’ve faced and what efforts or strategies allowed you to deal successfully with them. Not only will this help form the belief that mistakes and setbacks are healthy, it will also provide children a realistic example of how learning and development is a lifelong process.

The growth mindset can be extended to all areas of life and can be applied by people of all ages. Whether you’re an

BUSINESS

What does it take for a business to be successful?

That’s a question that entrepreneurs and corporations across the world have struggled with for over a century. The formula for success seems to change as technology, culture, and societies evolve and grow. In the industrial age, manufacturing capacity and quality were king. By the 1950s and 60s, customer service was the way to go if you wanted to be listed in Forbes Fortune 500. With the turn of the millennium, access to Big Data and Analytics seemed to give corporations like Google and Facebook competitive advantages over other tech companies. The formula for success seems to ebb and flow every few decades, constantly keeping entrepreneurs on their toes, wondering if they have caught the wave, or just narrowly missed it. This brings us to our protagonist, Dr. Saleh Al Shebil, Assistant Professor of Marketing at KFUPM. An approachable, open, and down-to-earth man, Dr. Al Shebil has exerted effort to both understanding, and helping others understand, what makes businesses succeed. Some say market conditions need to be right, while others believe that your differing value proposition is what will ensure your company’s eventual success. Dr. Al Shebil also subscribes to a significantly simpler theory best summarized by Management

During TedxDhahran, in 2010.

Consultant and Educator, Peter Drucker: “Because the purpose of business is to create a customer, the business enterprise has two--and only two--basic functions: marketing and innovation. Marketing and innovation produce results; all the rest are costs. Marketing is the distinguishing, unique function of the business." Of course Marketing is important. Every business theorist would agree on that point. Marketing depends on conducting feasibility studies, segmenting your target population, and convincing prospective buyers that they need to spend money on your product. Right? Well, not exactly. If we look closely at the quote, we realize he isn’t DESTINATIONKSA.COM 15

even talking about money. So, then, what does he mean by innovation and marketing? A natural-born teacher, Al Shebil, is most energetic and passionate when he explains to me, and to each of his students, his belief about what Marketing actually is. According to Dr. Al Shebil, Marketing is not about just selling an idea. Marketing starts with the creation of the idea itself. When you begin by understanding what customers need, what they want, you will be able to crystalize an idea; one that worth adopting and making it part of the customer’s life. People do not buy a product, they buy an idea. They buy the “why” behind your service or product. If you can convince people that an idea is worth investing their time and energy into, they will happily invest their money into it as well. Originally a Chemical Engineer, Dr. Al Shebil worked at Saudi Aramco for some time before discovering he had a passion for explaining and teaching, via the Dhahran Toastmasters club. He combined this drive with an intellectual curiosity about Business in general, and Marketing specifically, and chose to pursue his MBA, and subsequently his PhD, quitting his job at Saudi Aramco along the way. Upon joining the faculty at KFUPM, Dr. Al Shebil began to share his belief with students at the university via unique class assignments, such as “Marketing YOU!” In this 16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APIRL 2018

assignment, Dr. Al Shebil encourages his students to undertake any single positive activity that they have never attempted before, and to market that activity to him in a paper. By stripping the field of Marketing down to its essentials, marketing and ideas, Dr. Al Shebil has helped his students develop a deeper understanding of the core principles and psychology of what marketing is. His project-based approach to education has earned his classes a reputation as one of the most interesting and unique experiences on campus. The impact of Dr. Al Shebil’s passion for Marketing and teaching goes beyond the classroom. Through his classes, he has had his students work with existing startups and businesses to create practical Marketing campaigns; he believes that the most effective learning comes from tackling real-world problems. He is extremely active on social media, sharing his experience and expertise with the community to reach as broad an audience as possible. Education and learning is a lifelong journey that everyone is welcome, and encouraged, to participate in. In fact, I would say that Dr. Al Shebil’s most powerful message lies in his meta-educational approach: by marketing his message that ideas are the heart of Marketing itself, he has not only told us all what the formula for success is, but has shown it to us in action. alshebil

THE DIGITAL

MIDDLEMAN Thanks to technology, second hand clothing trade is now an option. By Tyma Hezam

Growing up in a compound meant garage sales every other week and community bulletin board trades. Those were the days. Little me would take my red wagon, cross the street, and shop at my neighbor’s garage for a Barbie doll (or two). I remember I was allowed to buy anything, but never the clothes. And mother knows how much my six year-old-self wanted that cool patched denim jacket. Here’s the thing, we do buy and sell used cars, furniture, and other appliances. Let’s take our Souq Al Haraj for instance, it is a flea market meet chaos, and we absolutely love it. When it comes to secondhand clothing trade though, it’s always been a taboo. Let’s be honest, shopping for clothes is a huge part of our lives here. Gowns that can go up to thousands of riyals just hanging in closets, getting dusty. When I started college in the States, I discovered my passion for trading clothes. I stumbled upon a thrift shop around the block that had the coolest finds. Items that you would never see in a mall or a retail store. Garments that hold a story, an enigmatic richness and charm. At first, I would just buy clothes until I realized how convenient it is to trade what I already had with new (not so new) ones. It did feel new though, they were very well-maintained. I was barely paying any difference in the exchange. I had something unique to wear all the time, and most importantly I was reducing my waste by recycling. I

started wondering why it was ever frowned upon. Recently, I am realizing there’s an evident paradigm shift in the idea of secondhand clothing consumption in Saudi. Dealing with a software verses human interaction brings great social comfort to users. With all the new phone apps and online shopping experiences surfacing, such as Souq.com and Haraj.com, a change regarding selling personal items is definitely happening. It also helps when clean user-friendly interfaces exist, allowing an easy experience to view/post every article of clothing individually. Another medium would be the personal efforts made to normalize this. WhatsApp groups run by housewives to trade and let-go within their community. Instagram accounts dedicated to secondhand chic, selling vintage hand-me-downs like purses and sunglasses. Used bridal dresses sales through social media are the most common and beneficial. Not only a woman can profit from a one-time expensive garment, but also give an opportunity for another woman to enjoy the luxury of a well-tailored dress for less. I am not against charity here, by all means, donate. But if you want to make money by selling your old clothes, why not? Technology is making it okay, and that’s okay. But now it’s up to us to interact. Lose the middleman. Host a swipe party. Tell your friends. Be eco-friendly. Say no to consumerism. Let go. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 19

At the Heart of It All

A visual journey celebrating Sharqiya’s merchants. By Noura Al Joaib and Mohammed Al Jubran

Today, that image is not as common as it used to be, replaced instead by shopping centers, strip malls, massive hypermarkets, and the image of a Marsool driver bringing us anything we desire from Starbucks to the night’s dinner right to our front door. Yet, whenever I find myself nostalgic for the sights, sounds, and smells of a traditional Sharqawi market, it is never more than a short drive away. Regardless of how far we have come, Sharqiya was, and still is, a community built by traders and merchants. You can see it in our welcoming nature, our ever-present smile for a

20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APIRL 2018

stranger, and the respect and courtesy we show to everyone, regardless of their race, gender, or nation of origin. Whether we toil over our own wares, or work for a multinational corporation, our work ethic is renowned as the standard to aspire to in the Kingdom. Today, we would like to celebrate these people whose names we never think to ask for, but who touch our lives whenever we go to a traditional market or an old souq. They are the people who remind us of a simpler time, and hold on to our most valued traditions with deep sense of pride and smiles on their faces. From older merchants who have mastered their craft with dignity and dedication, to young traders trying to build a name for themselves, so confident in their abilities and charm, these are the people who remind us who we are, where we come from, and who we will always be: Sharqawis.

Apart from being a personal and nostalgic undertaking for the foundation, we saw it as an opportunity to get different practitioners involved, further the center’s educational and cultural agenda, and engage the community. We wanted people to rethink the purpose of a library. Apart from the architectural face lift it will be getting, our goal is to create a multifunctional social hub, abreast with the digital demands DESTINATIONKSA.COM 31

of our time, and a space for knowledge transfer and cultural exchange,” she said. According to Jawaher, the D.A.U. Initiative unfolds in three phases, starting with AACC partnering up on with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), AlFaisal University in Riyadh, Dar Al Hekma University in Jeddah and Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University in Dammam. Each of these academic institutions were charged with preliminary research and developing the necessary benchmarks for design functionality and cultural cohesiveness. The exercise simultaneously uses the Dar Al Uloum as an on-going case study for architectural preservation and multidisciplinary investigation. 32 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APIRL 2018

The second phase of the initiative elaborated on these findings through the “The Architecture for the Future” conference. The event saw AACC partnering with Banafsajeel, Minhaj + Bakerloos, RIBA Gulf, and Phonart Saudi to deliver a program and set of activities that encourages creative collaboration, supports young architects, and brings critical concepts, best practices, and relevant trends on the discussion board. The conference also served as the launch pad for the Architectural Competition to redesign the library. “It took us over a year of planning and working closely with faculty members and students from our academic partners to come up with the architectural brief. So it

was an educational process in itself. The research based approach allowed practitioners to thoroughly explore local building practices and materials, and examine the future applications of a library space,” shared Jawaher. AACC emphasized that architectural aesthetics is not the singular determining factor in winning the competition. It is imperative that the themes of connectivity and efficiency play an integral role in the designs. “The center and the foundation considers sustainability as an important element in all its infrastructure projects. International standards for green design coincides with the vernacular architecture in Saudi Arabia, and this will be evident in the redesigning of Dar Al Uloum. Moreover,

The Dar Al Uloum Library Redesign Competition is open for submissions until the end of April 2018. A cash price of $50,000 and the project bid itself will be awarded to the winning design. For more information visit: www.daui.org

sustainability goes beyond adapting energy efficient methods and indigenous structural techniques. It also needs to ensure that the library and its surrounding complex becomes a destination for cultural flow and community engagement, without undermining social sensitivities. Striving for longevity, we should consider how it can be reshaped in the future to fit the needs of the generations to come,” said Jawaher. Submission for the competition were still on-going at the time of writing. Although Jawaher mentioned that winners will be announced by the third quarter of 2018, hopefully in an engaging event open to the public. Apart from its impact to academic discourse, AACC has

carved a two-way tunnel for knowledge transfer through the initiative. Its aspiration is to have practitioners and laymen alike joining the dialogue. If the success of the first and second phase of its endeavor is any indication of its potential to meet its objective, we have no doubt that the DAU Initiative will be a milestone project that brings the country closer to its 2030 vision. This multidisciplinary approach and community engagement can

be a gateway to influence the collective consciousness of Saudi Arabia. Collaborative platforms encourage society members to move from being passive receivers of change, to becoming active agents of it. It is an ecosystem like this that begins with the question, “How do you redesign a library?” and evolves to asking, “How can I reimagine the future?” Email: info@daui.com Website: www.alsudairy.org.sa

Out with the Old, in with the New Tips and tricks on how to successfully tidy-up your home this spring. By Zara Murray

Spring is upon us, and what a better way to welcome the warmer months, than by opening the windows and letting in some fresh air? As much as I’d like to tell you that spring cleaning is as easybreezy as floating around the house with a feather duster, tapping on everything in sight, leaving everything spotless, I can’t. However, there is something so gratifying about cleaning each room of your house this time of year. I’m not crazy, trust me on this one. Worried about spring cleaning? Here are a few tips and tricks on how to make your battle with last seasons’ disorder a little less daunting, and a little more manageable:

34 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APIRL 2018

Brace yourself

First and foremost, you need to prepare yourself both mentally and physically. This is not going to be a one day job if done properly. Make sure you have everything you need, from cleaning products, to the necessary electrical and manual appliances, to durable gloves and trash bags. Tip: Plan your daily tasks in advance, so you can have a clear vision.

Divide and Conquer

It’s important to have a plan of action, and the best advice I can give is to work on one room at a time. Segment the room, so you have the closet, the bed, and the desk, to work on sepereately. Even if this means bringing the vacuum cleaner in and out more than once, the feeling of satisfaction after being completely done with one room, will keep you motivated and driven.

Eliminate

Should it stay or should it go? If you haven’t worn it in the past year, and don’t plan on wearing it in the year ahead, it has to go. This is the perfect opportunity to declutter and rid yourself of anything that’s only there to gather dust. There are various websites where you can sell clothing and furniture. Expatriates. com, Olx.sa.com and Sa.haraj.com are your platforms for selling. If you’re not ready to completely get rid of your items, don’t worry. You can use Rentt.net to rent out your items.

Balance? Juggle? Multitask?

Multitasking is your best friend when trying to be more efficient. While you’re organizing your room, why not have a cycle of laundry going at the same time? Have your curtains and sheers cleaned before you start working on the living room, so they will be ready to put up again by the time you’re done.

All hands on deck

No one said this had to be a one-man mission, so call in the cavalry. Brothers, sisters, and even your children. The more, the merrier. Allocate tasks for each person to carry out, and give them tips on how to do it, to ensure the best results. For example: make sure to dust the room down before vacuuming and cleaning the floor. Otherwise you will be stuck with dust residue.

WHAT IF YOU WANT TO DONATE FURNITURE? Dar-alkhair.com can take your donations, to distribute them to those in need. If you’re donating clothes, Albarakah.org.sa is where to go to.To make donating even easier for us, Fa’idh, meaning surplus, is an app that is dedicated especially for donating clothes, furniture, home appliances and much more, wherever you are in Saudi. It is available on iOS and Android. YOU NOW HAVE ALL THE TIPS, TRICKS, AND PLATFORMS TO MAKE SPRING CLEANING MUCH EASIER FOR YOU.

One such story is that of the crew behind “Too Dark To See Tomorrow” (2D2C2M). Maan Al Qurashi, Ahmed Al Wohaibi, and Abdullah Bagalb, are three friends who started the contemporary streetwear brand that has created a buzz in Riyadh and neighboring cities. It was fascinating to learn that these three bonded over their love for fashion and came up with the idea to start a clothing line back in 2011, when they were software engineering students at the King Saud University. “We have always been interested in fashion and we always knew we would one day work on a project related to it together. It finally materialized in 2014. Though it didn’t happen in one day, of course. It took hours of learning and researching; we love what we are doing so that pushed us everyday. It took around six months to get our gears in place and launch our first designs”, said Ahmed. Interestingly, apart from learning the ins and outs of the trade, managing the business side of things, and putting their fashion design caps on; these three still have 9-5 jobs. “It can be a tricky balancing act but each of us is committed to this and so we make it work. After we clock out from our jobs, we go straight to our next one (2D2C2M), we do have a lot of sleepless nights, spent coming up with new designs, figuring out the 42 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APIRL 2018

next collection, dealing with manufacturers, and just tackling the ins and outs of it,” shares Abdullah. It helps that these three are not in a hurry. At the end of the day, their goal is to be a brand. They also want to be part of, if not spark a movement that elevates the street scene in Saudi Arabia. “We were never aiming to be an ‘It’ label. We believe that easy come, easy go. We would rather grow slow and steady, to be a brand, not just a trend. The Riyadh scene, when it comes to street fashion or even lifestyle, is still maturing. We do want to be part of building

the culture and representing it,” explains Maan. These decade long friends have a lot of traveling on the horizon, mostly to discover other street cultures and draw inspiration from other urban scenes. Avid fans need not worry, side by side this, the team is already busy brainstorming for their next collection. Their previous installment, entitled Dark by Popular Demand is stocked in Pattern Saudi, a Riyadh based concept store or you can visit their e-commerce site to grab one of their in-demand shirts. The Joy of Baking

Meet a few of Sharqiya’s cake connoisseurs. By Dalia Darweesh

Let’s get to the cake of the matter: we met with creative cake artists and learned about their journeys the art of cake baking and decorating.

Vanilla Sky by Ghadeer Al Rabaan

A communication specialist and translator by major, cake designer by profession, Ghadeer Al Rabaan recalls baking cookies for a family outing, when her cousin asked her to start selling cookies. In 2010, she founded Vanilla Sky. Referring to the desserts she offers and the unlimited creativity that leads her work. Some of the challenges she faced were not finding the tools for decorating. “I enjoyed figuring out how to craft figurines on my own, which preserved their uniqueness,” she told us. Since her job is about sharing joy, it motivates her to unlock more creativity. She is currently working on having her own home studio, and will be releasing a documentary titled A Piece of Love, that discusses the creative process of cake designing. “Inspiration is all around you. The Mass Participation Federation Leading the movement towards a fit and positive community. The Mass Participation Federation (MP) has been hard at work. They’ve been at the forefront of elevating the quality of life in the Kingdom--- influencing generations, young and old, Saudis and expatriates alike to embrace a more active and participative lifestyle. They entered 2018 strong, bringing major sporting events to our hometowns, from the recently concluded first ever Riyadh International Marathon, Race of Champions, to organizing activations for families and women watching their soccer matches in stadiums for the first time. While it is tempting to say that they are the GSA’s federation of fun merely the surface of it. The federation is turning our society into one that values its wellbeing, embraces different communities, and sees being active as integral proponent to its progress. Haifa Al Sabab, CEO of the Mass Participation Federation said it best, "Our aim as MPF is to endorse and promote physical activity throughout society, across all forms of physical activity and 56 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APIRL 2018

irrespective of individual ability levels. In order to accomplish our goals, we must first begin with ourselves. By setting the correct tone internally we provide proof that energy and enthusiasm can be infectious. As an organization and a country we must embrace our differences, and in so doing become a catalyst for the change that will inspire uplifting activities for everyone and build a movement. Belonging to this movement fuels our desire to change the status quo and break down boundaries within our society. We are enthusiastic to support others, we build trust through our transparency, and we ensure credibility in all we do and so as to never disappoint those who look to us for support. Every step we take further

builds this movement. In fact, we lead THE Movement. The Movement that meets our country’s ambitions for Vision 2030. The Movement that touches all of our community members. The Movement that activates our places and our people. The Movement that enhances the quality of life of all our citizens." To further propel this vision forward, MP sees the importance of fostering a strong ecosystem for Community Sports Groups to grow and and thrive. Seeing innovation as a key component, the federation will be launching exciting techventures throughout the year— phone and web applications for CSGs and the public. Community Sports Groups will gain access to grants and support by participating in the app. They can share their needs through it and are given points for meeting certain milestones - growing their membership, participating in local meets, etc. These points can in turn be redeemed for sports equipment,

uniforms, venue sponsorships, etc. This incentive scheme will encourage CSGs to meet their goals. And it doesn’t end there, MPF will be keeping their eye out for the Top CSGs, who can be nominated and recognized during an End of Year ceremony MP is planning for various community sports groups to engage each other and share their successes. The MPFs mission extends to engaging individuals as well. Part of their tech initiative is creating a portal for sports enthusiasts and athletes to connect with CSGs in their respective cities. The system will be secure and user-friendly, allowing participants to find CSGs and sporting events in their area, and training with like-minded individuals in a safe environment.

“We’re developing an apple watch app designed to motivate people to get on their feet. As a society that runs at the same pace with technology the world over, our initiative to integrate physical activity into their lifestyle through smart tools is a must.”

Understanding that change is a 360 degree challenge, the federation will also involve the public in opportunities to get active. They will also, down the line, incentivize persons who engage in recreational sports activities through an app that grants redeemable gift points and helps them track their health progress. The rationale in investing in these innovative programs is geared ultimately towards investing in the people of Saudi Arabia. While at the moment, only 13 percent of the population engages in physical activity, with these projects in place, their goal of raising this number to 40 percent by 2030 is becoming more tangible, and with that, foreseeably achievable. Snacking: A Misunderstood Acquaintance By Yasmeen Al Haj

Ever met someone who you know has a bad reputation, and then once you got to know them, you realized that they’ve been misunderstood? That’s snacking. If you’re one of those people that have categorized snacking as a bad habit, I have good news for you: it can either be your best friend or your worst enemy, it all depends on your approach! I’ve simplified ‘snacking well’ into three steps: preparing your snacks in advance, eating on a regular schedule, and choosing nutritious options. These steps will help you avoid overeating at mealtime and focus your energy on your other priorities and activities.

58 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APIRL 2018

SOURCE PHOTO

One of the common reasons for overeating is extreme hunger. When you allow yourself to go for a long time without eating, first you start feeling tired, your energy tank hits zero, then your mood switches - you start to get h(a)ngry. Soon, your body starts to feel deprived, triggering a kind of survival alert, and your thinking automatically shifts to focusing on eating, and eating FAST. Suddenly you find yourself at the table inhaling everything in sight. Before you know it, you’re on the couch feeling physically ill, unable to do anything else. You lay there, questioning your life choices and having major regrets. Had you had a snack with you on the go to eat between your meals, you probably would’ve been in a different position. At any given time and no matter where I am, I always have my snacks for the day ready with me. It’s like having an emergency toolkit - a hunger first aid kit, if you will. As for scheduling, my day is organized so that I’m eating six times a day, and each meal/ snack sustains me for 2-3 hours. Every three hours, I’m eating something. On a typical day of good sleep and physical activity, I know that when I stick to my eating schedule, my energy levels will be in ship shape, allowing me to give 100% to any activity at hand, whether it be work, a social event, you name it. You can either choose to prepare your snacks a week in

advance, a night in advance, or on the morning of each day. When choosing your snacks while prepping, focus on including options that are packed with nutrients and will fuel you with the proper energy to carry out your daily tasks as needed. The secret to a good snack that’ll keep you full for longer, is pairing the three amigos: carbs, fat, and protein, in each snack. Some examples you may opt for are the basics that you can find anywhere: pre-cut veggies such as carrots and cucumbers with hummus, apple slices with peanut butter, or Greek yogurt with nuts. Otherwise, you can opt for store-ready healthy snacks.

So if I were you, I’d give snacking a second chance and take my time getting to know it a little better. By being prepared with nutritious options and eating on schedule, chances are, you’ll realize you’ve been missing out on a fantastic opportunity to make snacking your new friend.

Historically known as Souq Al Khamees (Thursday Market), the Saturday Market is a popular local marketplace in the city of Qatif in Sharqiya. The market has been taking place every weekend, for over 70 years, come rain or shine. It attracts visitors from all over the region including the neighboring countries of the Gulf area.

Its appeal and popularity stems for the wide array of locallymade handicrafts, products, and produce, all displayed and sold by locals. Products found in the market include local handicrafts such as baskets, mats, and fans made from leaves of palm trees; an old craft native to the region, and still loved and appreciated by people today.

CAMELS GALORE! A Trip to the grand camel market of Al Ahsa. By Shayne Haridas

Al Ahsa in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia is well known for its Date farms and is often referred to as the “Largest Palm Oasis in the World”. It is also infamous for producing the priced Khilas dates. Its beautiful city, Hofuf, has always been a favorite destination of mine, from the time I studied in Saudi to when I returned to work in the kingdom in 2009. Growing up as expats, we had a lot of free time over the weekends to explore the vast, unexplored stretches of the Eastern Province. It was my father’s love for exploring that led us to the many fabulous locations dotted all over Sharqiya. Al Ahsa Camel Market located off Riyadh road and in proximity to the Industrial area, covers a huge expanse of the desert. It can be tricky trying to find it considering there are no sign boards pointing you in the right direction. I had been told that the best time to visit this place was when the auction takes place in the early hours of the morning on Thursdays between 5 and 6 AM. The place is well organized and stocks large bales of hay for the animals. I arrived just in time for the auction which was being held in a large pen in the middle of the market, with traders showing off their herds of camel, who were more content

having a bite to eat. There was quite a crowd with a lot of the visitors from Qatar and the UAE who I’ve been told, were regulars to the market and often made the winning bid with their enormous proposals. It lasted for close to an hour before it started winding down, so I started to explore more of the market. Stopping at a pen to take a few pictures, I was invited to tea by the friendly local who owned the camels. Sitting down and trying to communicate with them in my broken Arabic, they offered me fresh camel milk. I felt welcomed by the hospitality of these lovely people who did not know who I was, but invited me to drink tea with them. Apart from Camels, the market also has other livestock like sheep and goat of all sizes and color. They were well fed and kept in smaller pens with a caretaker watching over them. The week before Eid Ul Adha is when this part of the market comes alive with locals and expats all jostling to purchase a sheep to sacrifice during the blessed day. Otherwise I was told, it was the caretaker’s job to stop the horned sheep’s from charging each other. This is a fantastic experience for those of you who love a lil’ adventure, and a journey back in time to when things were a lot simpler. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 77
