BUY LOCAL, BY LOCAL. Shopping, one of Riyadh’s favorite past times. If it ever became a sport, Riyadhis will definitely be going for gold. The best thing about our arena, is that it caters to just about every “shoplete”, from the couture loving elite, the antique hunters, street style seekers, and bargain-seekers. Hence an issue dedicated to your leisure sport seemed to be a must guide for this year. But we decided to raise the bar by curating an issue that also inspires you to buy local. Behind what we call “By Local” brands, are people like 2D2C2M and DRAFT. Riyadhis who are determined to change the retailscape of the city by providing game changing experiences and products. We’ve also rounded up jewelers in the city and also found you looks that don’t leave holes in your pockets. Needless to say, we want you to see why we love shopping in this city. And we can say for a fact, that the rest of the Kingdom does too—our neighbors drive and fly in just to make the most of fashion season in the capital. Just in case, you’re not one to trek the retail jungle, worry not! We’ve got something for the activity junkies and foodies; and something for the geeks. Whatever style you’ve got going, Destination is still your lifestyle companion to the city.

BUSINESS

Wadha Al Rashed

CRAFTING A BRAND Most tastemakers and pacesetters in the city would be familiar with DRAFT. It was the first concept store in Riyadh, and later on, the first café that fused retailing with a good cup of coffee for a unique customer experience. In a city that is hungry for great design and appreciates enterprises that shake things up, DRAFT came to make its mark. 16 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

The moment you meet Wadha Al Rashed, you realize that the cohesiveness of DRAFT as a brand is a personification of the entrepreneur behind it. Even their office, felt like an extension of the store and café. The daughter of an architect, Wadha was exposed to the value of good design and had an affinity towards creativity

at an early age. The Prince Sultan University alumnus took up interior design. And after graduating, she joined her siblings in the family business - the RSR & Sons co. Ltd. The latter is considered to be a pioneer conglomerate. Since its inception in the 1950s, RSR and Sons Co. Ltd. has one of the strongest business

portfolios in the Kingdom. Coming from a business oriented family had developed the entrepreneurial spirit of Wadha. While she takes pride in the success of RAR, she didn’t want to rest on its laurels and sought to create something on her own. “I am first and foremost, a designer, I was never built

for a corporate setting. I wanted to build an outlet for my creativity that at the same time gave Riyadh something it was missing.” An avid traveler, she found joy in stumbling upon little shops in big cities. This, paired with her love for gifts and packages inspired her to open a concept store in Riyadh. Once she had

the idea seed planted in her mind, she rolled up her sleeves, determined to bring it to life. “I knew early on that I didn’t just want to open up a store, I was up for the challenge of building a brand. This is also why I chose the name DRAFT, it is a name that I and my team can grow with, build upon and expand as we go along.” DESTINATIONKSA.COM 17

“This venture is an adventure and a very personal one. When I started DRAFT in 2013, I had to build it from the ground up. There was no model to follow, since nothing like it existed in Riyadh. I had to learn everything from retail buying, setting up its commercial backbones, to sorting inventory, and balancing the books. And I did make mistakes along the way. I remember the first time I had an accountant look at my bookkeeping. He gave me a puzzled look and said, ‘Wadha, you’ve been doing it all wrong,’” Wadha

18 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

But as Wadha pointed out, encountering pitfalls and challenges is part of putting up a business. Looking back, she wouldn’t have done anything differently. “Being hands at the beginning of DRAFT taught me the ins and outs, it also helps me understand what my team goes through on a day to day basis, because at some point I had done it myself.” A lot of people who visited DRAFT started telling Wadha that it was their happy place. It became more than concept store, it triggered positive thoughts, and generosity— stepping in, you start thinking of loved ones and what gifts you can pick up for them. As

an interior designer, Wadha created a visually captivating space, making you want to linger longer, just to soak it in. “Eventually I wanted to offer that same happy feeling, creativity, and positivity paired with a good cup of coffee. I imagined DRAFT Café to be a place where people come together.” DRAFT Café has been bookmarked as a place to get inspired. People come in to work, to have conversations, and even shop. It’s hard to resist picking up a random item on display. There are outlets everywhere, making it a favorite among creatives and people who work remotely. Each section has its own reading corner, where people can in fact leave and take books.

“It’s purposefully designed, we didn’t need to tell people how to use the space, we allowed the intention to be delivered through their interactions with the furniture, the interiors, our team, and it worked.” Having one of the prettiest concept stores and cafés in Riyadh can perhaps be the best business card. The company also has an interior design arm and has attracted clients looking for that special DRAFT touch. Given its success in Riyadh, we asked Wadha what’s next: “I’m not a fan of chains, so DRAFT will never become one. I want it to be your space, the experience of people needs to always be personal. We will be opening a new address soon. Other

than that, we remain active in the creative scene, whether its pop ups or design festivals. We are also open to hosting workshops and talks in the café.” Wadha AlRashed is an entrepreneur of note because she instinctively stays ahead of the curve. Her meticulous attention to consistent and sustainable branding is something her contemporaries can learn from. In this day and age, people don’t just respond to products, they demand to be engaged—to feel

ownership of their experience and interactions. Wrap it up in a pretty package, and you have DRAFT’s formula for success. “Behind DRAFT is an orchestra, my team plays a happy tune, they need to be comfortable in whatever chair they’re in. Then there are our customers and the space we craft to inspire them to act, think, or feel. Beautiful things don’t need to ask for attention, so I want them to use it as they see fit and we just get out of their way,” Wadha said with a confident smile. draftthoughts

20 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

A must read and keep for shopaholics in the city. By Jou Pabalate

Shopping is a sport in Riyadh, one which style athletes come for from all over the Kingdom. As the capital, we are home to best brands—local and international, and offer arenas for just about anything you might want and need.

Haute and Hotter From high street to high fashion, Riyadh offers a mirage of options to satisfy tastemakers and seekers. The premier mall to go to for luxury brands is Centria Mall, which is the address for Gucci, Van Cleef and Arpels, Burberry, Chloe, among other hard to find European fashion houses. For Riyadhi gentlemen, this is where you can get a bespoke Tom Ford suit, they also have Porsche Design, Missoni, and more. Kingdom Mall is where lovers of Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Fendi, and Versace can wander. High Street brands are available in just about every mall in Riyadh. For those who would prefer stand alone showrooms, head to Olaya Street. While there, you can also check out the perfume boutique, O-100, which offers niche and artisan scents that are bound to make you swoon. Destination loves their Diptique and Byredo

collections. And guess what? Bvlgari is just a stone throw away from it. For luxury department stores that house a variety of brands under one roof, Rubaiyat, Harvey Nichols, and Etre are all in Riyadh. LOCATIONS: Harvey Nichols Al Faisaliah Mall Rubaiyat Kingdom Mall Etre Panorama Mall

Concept Stores

We have a soft spot for concept stores in the city, their passion for curation has, in our opinion, elevated the retail experience for shoppers. It’s a plus that most of them can be found in lifestyle plazas. The Boulevard is the address for three concept stores that are making quite a buzz, Pattern, Uniqueville, and Ruff Boutique. These three offer both local and international brands that lean towards streetwear and high athleisure ready to wear. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 21

There is also the choice to have one custom made, you can find the fabrics in Souqs as well as Deerah. You will find local tailor shops in almost every street in Riyadh.

22 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

A staple in every woman’s closet in Riyadh is of course, the Abaya. Through the years, we’ve seen it evolve, and today you’ll see them in different shapes and colors. We still haven’t forgotten the spikes and studs trend, wish we could. If you want to buy an Abaya in-store, there’s an abundance of shops in Royal Mall. Some would say that going to Thaiba Souq is also a good, and often cheaper option. Abayas can be as cheap as SR 150, although keep in mind that you will be wearing it everyday--- so consider your abaya repertoire as an investment.

For men, the secret to a good thobe is the fit, it shouldn’t wrap around you like a shawarma but it shouldn’t be too loose that you end up looking like a tablecloth battling the wind. Tastemakers, we’re sure you’re familiar with Lomar and Sindi thobes. Lomar has a shop in Localizer—where you can also find other menswear. Sindi has a newly opened showroom in Al Malqa.

While winter is long gone, we do believe that every Riyadhi should have a Farwa. They can be found in Tumairi, in different colors and sizes. A good farwa feels like a warm hug in the middle of the cold.

The Na’al is not just a classic sandal investment, it is also quite trendy to use when travelling. Local stores like White Horse or Black Stallion, offer them in different colors. One of our favorite elevated brands for Arabian footwear is Tamashee, which is stocked locally in Draft Store in Centria but it can also be ordered online. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 23

Now you have your closet in order, let’s move on to the rest of your house. When it comes to setting up your home, Riyadh has offerings for every budget. Below are our picks to get your décor game on point:

Cities Design

If you want artisan craftsmanship, unique conversation pieces, and great design--- Cities will make you happy. They have everything from handmade marble table ware, signature design couches, to decors that will elevate any wall you place them on. Albeit, it does come at a price. Location: Prince Muhammed Ibn Abdulaziz Rd. Web: citiesstore.com

Aura Living

You might have already seen Aura’s Dallah Instagram worthy pop up installation making its rounds in different malls. This home fashion store is one of our favorites because of their ability to successfully curate contemporary pieces and reimagine traditional iconic items.

Location: Panorama Mall auraliving

Daiso and Muji

If you’re on a budget, head to Daiso and Muji for Japanese imported goods that have become local favorites, because of their minimalistic cultural approach. You go into these stores with an intention to just look around but you end up coming out hauling lots of bags! 24 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

For those seeking to furnish their homes from top to bottom, we have Department Store Options: Ikea, Abyat, ID Design, W

If you want the whole souq experience, drive to Old Riyadh in Deerah. Beside the Masmak Fort is Souq Al Zal, which has everything. You’ll also come across vintage shops and lots of antique huts.

The wonderful souqs in Riyadh has a special place in our Riyadhi hearts. The winded corridors of souqs can keep you entertained for hours. Each one is usually divided into different areas--- from tablewares, cutlery, spices, oud, to fabrics, gold, and unfortunately, knock offs. In search for gold? Kuwaiti Souq is where you can get proper jewelry sets as well as have pieces customized just for you. Owais which is just adjacent to it on King Fahd Rd, also has some of them as well as watch shops. The latter is also a good place to scour for some fine fabrics.

For house essentials and trinket central, crossover to Thaiba souk, where you will find wares, traditional items like Henna, oud incense, jalabiyas, and more.

THE DAR AL ULOUM

One of Saudi Arabia’s oldest libraries becomes a gateway to reimagining the future.

literal translation, was also the first women’s library of its kind in Saudi Arabia.

To the north of Saudi Arabia lies the region of Al Jouf, within it is the town of Sakkakah, once considered an oasis pit stop in the Arabian caravan routes. Its rich biodiversity has made the region ripe for agriculture, and has stirred interest for tourism.

Building upon its founding father’s legacy, AACC advocates for cultural, socioeconomic and intellectual development in Saudi Arabia, particularly with its projects in Al Jouf region and the Al Sudairy hometown of Al Ghat. Funded by the Abdulrahman Al Sudairy Foundation and headquarted in Al Jouf, AACC manages a strong research and studies program through its two publications: Adamatu, a journal for historical heritage and archaeology in the Arab world, as well as Al Joubah, a literary and cultural magazine. They also organize educational events, some of which are

Having one of the international borders to the Kingdom, Al Jouf has significant economic potential. While the government has taken steps to invest more in the region, its success relies on a collaborative effort between public, private, and nonprofit agencies. One such organization taking lead in Al Jouf’s development, is the Abdulrahman Al Sudairy Cultural Center (AACC). It was established through a royal 26 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

decree to carry on the work of the late governor of Al Jouf, Abdulrahman Bin Ahmad Al Sudairy. The latter is known for his public service and ushering a renaissance period in Al Jouf, through educational, social, and economic initiatives. An example of the visionary’s commitment to developing the human capital in Al Jouf is the establishment of the Dar Al Uloum Public Library. The “House of Knowledge”, its

held in the community spaces they’ve built—public libraries, school buildings, and auditoriums to name a few. In line with these projects, AACC launched the D.A.U. Initiative, with the aim of breathing new life to the Dar Uloum Public Library in Sakakah, Al Jouf. One of the figures behind it is Jawaher Al Sudairy, who holds a background in urban planning and policy making. “The Dar Al Uloum Public Library is nearing its golden jubilee year, and we knew it was time to bring it up to date. Apart from being a personal undertaking for the foundation, we saw it as an opportunity to get different practitioners involved, further the center’s educational and cultural agenda, and engage the community. We wanted people to rethink the purpose of a library. Apart from the architectural upgrade it will be getting, our goal is to create a multifunctional social hub, abreast with the digital demands DESTINATIONKSA.COM 27

of our time, and a space for knowledge transfer and cultural exchange,” she said. According to Jawaher, the D.A.U. Initiative unfolds in three phases, starting with AACC partnering up with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), AlFaisal University in Riyadh, Dar Al Hekma University in Jeddah and Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University in Dammam. Each of these academic institutions were charged with preliminary research and developing the necessary benchmarks for design functionality and cultural cohesiveness. The exercise simultaneously uses the Dar Al Uloum as an on-going case study for architectural preservation and multidisciplinary investigation. 28 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

The second phase of the initiative elaborated on these findings through the “The Architecture for the Future” conference. The event saw AACC partnering with Banafsajeel, AlFaisal University, Minhaj + Bakerloos, RIBA Gulf, and Phonart Saudi to deliver a program and set of activities that encourages creative collaboration, supports young architects, and brings critical concepts, best practices, and relevant trends on the discussion board. The conference also served as the launch pad for the Architectural Competition to redesign the library. “It took us over a year of planning and working closely with faculty members and students from our academic partners to come up with

the architectural brief. So it was an educational process in itself. The research-based approach allowed practitioners to thoroughly explore local building practices and materials, and examine the future applications of a library space,” shared Jawaher. AACC emphasized that architectural aesthetics is not the singular determining factor in winning the competition. It is imperative that the themes of connectivity and efficiency play an integral role in the designs. “The center and the foundation considers sustainability as an important element in all its infrastructure projects. International standards for green design coincides with the vernacular architecture in Saudi Arabia, and this will be evident in the redesigning

The Dar Al Uloum Library Redesign Competition is open for submissions until the end of April 2018. A cash price of $50,000 and the project bid itself will be awarded to the winning design. For more information visit: daui.org

of Dar Al Uloum. Moreover, sustainability goes beyond adapting energy efficient methods and indigenous structural techniques. It also needs to ensure that the library and its surrounding complex becomes a destination for cultural flow and community engagement, without undermining social sensitivities. Striving for longevity, we should consider how it can be reshaped in the future to fit the needs of the generations to come,” said Jawaher. Submission for the competition were still on-going at the time of writing. Although Jawaher mentioned that winners will be announced by the third quarter of 2018, hopefully in an engaging event open to the public. Apart from its impact on academic discourse, AACC has

carved a two-way tunnel for knowledge transfer through the initiative. Its aspiration is to have practitioners and laymen alike joining the dialogue. If the success of the first and second phase of its endeavor is any indication of its potential to meet its objective, we have no doubt that the DAU Initiative will be a milestone project that brings the country closer to its 2030 vision. This multidisciplinary approach and community engagement can

be a gateway to influence the collective consciousness of Saudi Arabia. Collaborative platforms encourage society members to move from being passive receivers of change, to becoming active agents of it. One such story is that of the crew behind “Too Dark To See Tomorrow” (2D2C2M). Maan Al Qurashi, Ahmad Al Wohaibi, and Abdullah Bagalb, are three friends who started the contemporary streetwear brand that has created a buzz in Riyadh and neighboring cities. It was fascinating to learn that these three bonded over their love for fashion and came up with the idea to start a clothing line back in 2011, when they were software engineering students at the King Saud University. “We have always been interested in fashion and we always knew we would one day work on a project related to it together. It finally materialized in 2014. Though it didn’t happen in one day, of course. It took hours of learning and researching; we love what we are doing so that pushed us everyday. It took around six months to get our gears in place and launch our first designs,” said Ahmad. Interestingly, apart from learning the ins and outs of the trade, managing the business side of things, and putting their fashion design caps on; these three still have 9-5 jobs. “It can be a tricky balancing act but each of us is committed to this and so we make it work. After we clock out from our jobs, we go straight to our next one (2D2C2M), we do have a lot of sleepless nights, spent coming up with new designs, figuring out the 36 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

next collection, dealing with manufacturers, and just tackling the ins and outs of it,” shares Abdullah. It helps that these three are not in a hurry. At the end of the day, their goal is to be a brand. They also want to be part of, if not spark a movement that elevates the street scene in Saudi Arabia. “We were never aiming to be an ‘It’ label. We believe that easy come, easy go. We would rather grow slow and steady, to be a brand, not just a trend. The Riyadh scene, when it comes to street fashion or even lifestyle, is still maturing. We do want to be part of building

the culture and representing it,” explains Maan. These decade long friends have a lot of traveling on the horizon, mostly to discover other street cultures and draw inspiration from other urban scenes. Avid fans need not worry, side by side this, the team is already busy brainstorming for their next collection. Their previous installment, entitled Dark by Popular Demand is stocked in Pattern Saudi, a Riyadh based concept store, General Concept Store in Dubai, or you can visit their e-commerce site to grab one of their in-demand shirts. The interior of this place radiates with good vibes. What adds to this cozy environment is the famous painting of flamingoes created by Turki Al-Romaih. Snacking: A Misunderstood Acquaintance By Yasmeen Al Haj

Ever met someone who you know has a bad reputation, and then once you got to know them, you realized that they’ve been misunderstood? That’s snacking. If you’re one of those people that have categorized snacking as a bad habit, I have good news for you: it can either be your best friend or your worst enemy, it all depends on your approach! I’ve simplified ‘snacking well’ into three steps: preparing your snacks in advance, eating on a regular schedule, and choosing nutritious options. These steps will help you avoid overeating at mealtime and focus your energy on your other priorities and activities.

56 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

SOURCE PHOTO

One of the common reasons for overeating is extreme hunger. When you allow yourself to go for a long time without eating, first you start feeling tired, your energy tank hits zero, then your mood switches - you start to get h(a)ngry. Soon, your body starts to feel deprived, triggering a kind of survival alert, and your thinking automatically shifts to focusing on eating, and eating FAST. Suddenly you find yourself at the table inhaling everything in sight. Before you know it, you’re on the couch feeling physically ill, unable to do anything else. You lay there, questioning your life choices and having major regrets. Had you had a snack with you on the go to eat between your meals, you probably would’ve been in a different position.

advance, a night in advance, or on the morning of each day. When choosing your snacks while prepping, focus on including options that are packed with nutrients and will fuel you with the proper energy to carry out your daily tasks as needed.

At any given time and no matter where I am, I always have my snacks for the day ready with me. It’s like having an emergency toolkit - a hunger first aid kit, if you will. As for scheduling, my day is organized so that I’m eating six times a day, and each meal/ snack sustains me for 2-3 hours. Every three hours, I’m eating something. On a typical day of good sleep and physical activity, I know that when I stick to my eating schedule, my energy levels will be in ship shape, allowing me to give 100% to any activity at hand, whether it be work, a social event, you name it.

I HAVE A FEW FAVORITES THAT I REPEATEDLY BUY:

You can either choose to prepare your snacks a week in

The secret to a good snack that’ll keep you full for longer, is pairing the three amigos: carbs, fat, and protein, in each snack. Some examples you may opt for are the basics that you can find anywhere: pre-cut veggies such as carrots and cucumbers with hummus, apple slices with peanut butter, or Greek yogurt with nuts. Otherwise, you can opt for store-ready healthy snacks.

So if I were you, I’d give snacking a second chance and take my time getting to know it a little better. By being prepared with nutritious options and eating on schedule, chances are, you’ll realize you’ve been missing out on a fantastic opportunity to make snacking your new friend.

The Mass Participation Federation Leading the movement towards a fit and positive community. The Mass Participation Federation (MP) has been hard at work. They’ve been at the forefront of elevating the quality of life in the Kingdom--- influencing generations, young and old, Saudis and expatriates alike to embrace a more active and participative lifestyle. They entered 2018 strong, bringing major sporting events to our hometowns, from the recently concluded first ever Riyadh International Marathon, Race of Champions, to organizing activations for families and women watching their soccer matches in stadiums for the first time. While it is tempting to say that they are the GSA’s federation of fun merely the surface of it. The federation is turning our society into one that values its wellbeing, embraces different communities, and sees being active as integral proponent to its progress. Haifa Al Sabab, CEO of the Mass Participation Federation said it best, "Our aim as MPF is to endorse and promote physical activity throughout society, across all forms of physical activity and 58 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

irrespective of individual ability levels. In order to accomplish our goals, we must first begin with ourselves. By setting the correct tone internally we provide proof that energy and enthusiasm can be infectious. As an organization and a country we must embrace our differences, and in so doing become a catalyst for the change that will inspire uplifting activities for everyone and build a movement. Belonging to this movement fuels our desire to change the status quo and break down boundaries within our society. We are enthusiastic to support others, we build trust through our transparency, and we ensure credibility in all we do and so as to never disappoint those who look to us for support. Every step we take further

builds this movement. In fact, we lead THE Movement. The Movement that meets our country’s ambitions for Vision 2030. The Movement that touches all of our community members. The Movement that activates our places and our people. The Movement that enhances the quality of life of all our citizens." To further propel this vision forward, MP sees the importance of fostering a strong ecosystem for Community Sports Groups to grow and and thrive. Seeing innovation as a key component, the federation will be launching exciting techventures throughout the year— phone and web applications for CSGs and the public. Community Sports Groups will gain access to grants and support by participating in the app. They can share their needs through it and are given points for meeting certain milestones - growing their membership, participating in local meets, etc. These points can in turn be redeemed for sports equipment,

uniforms, venue sponsorships, etc. This incentive scheme will encourage CSGs to meet their goals. And it doesn’t end there, MPF will be keeping their eye out for the Top CSGs, who can be nominated and recognized during an End of Year ceremony MP is planning for various community sports groups to engage each other and share their successes. The MPFs mission extends to engaging individuals as well. Part of their tech initiative is creating a portal for sports enthusiasts and athletes to connect with CSGs in their respective cities. The system will be secure and user-friendly, allowing participants to find CSGs and sporting events in their area, and training with like-minded individuals in a safe environment.

“We’re developing an apple watch app designed to motivate people to get on their feet. As a society that runs at the same pace with technology the world over, our initiative to integrate physical activity into their lifestyle through smart tools is a must.”

Understanding that change is a 360 degree challenge, the federation will also involve the public in opportunities to get active. They will also, down the line, incentivize persons who engage in recreational sports activities through an app that grants redeemable gift points and helps them track their health progress. The rationale in investing in these innovative programs is geared ultimately towards investing in the people of Saudi Arabia. While at the moment, only 13 percent of the population engages in physical activity, with these projects in place, their goal of raising this number to 40 percent by 2030 is becoming more tangible, and with that, foreseeably achievable. SOUQ AL SABT Delve into Qatif’s treasured Saturday market.

70 DESTINATION RIYADH APRIL 2018

Historically known as Souq Al Khamees (Thursday Market), the Saturday Market is a popular local marketplace in the city of Qatif in Sharqiya. The market has been taking place every weekend, for over 70 years, come rain or shine. It attracts visitors from all over the region including the neighboring countries of the Gulf area.

Its appeal and popularity stems for the wide array of locallymade handicrafts, products, and produce, all displayed and sold by locals. Products found in the market include local handicrafts such as baskets, mats, and fans made from leaves of palm trees; an old craft native to the region, and still loved and appreciated by people today.

CAMELS GALORE! A Trip to the grand camel market of Al Ahsa. By Shayne Haridas

COURTESY PHOTO

Al Ahsa in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia is well known for its Date farms and is often referred to as the “Largest Palm Oasis in the World”. It is also infamous for producing the priced Khelas dates. Its beautiful city Hofuf has always been a favorite destination of mine, from the time I studied in Saudi to when I returned to work in the kingdom in 2009. Growing up as expats, we had a lot of free time over the weekends to explore the vast, unexplored stretches of the Eastern Province. It was my father’s love for exploring that led us to the many fabulous locations dotted all over Sharqiya. Al Ahsa Camel Market located off Riyadh road and in proximity to the Industrial area, covers a huge expanse of the desert. It can be tricky trying to find it considering there are no sign boards pointing you in the right direction. I had been told that the best time to visit this place was when the auction takes place in the early hours of the morning on Thursdays between 5 and 6 AM. The place is well organized and stocks large bales of hay for the animals. I arrived just in time for the auction which was being held in a large pen in the middle of the market, with traders showing off their herds of camel, who were more content

having a bite to eat. There was quite a crowd with a lot of the visitors from Qatar and the UAE who I’ve been told, were regulars to the market and often made the winning bid with their enormous proposals. It lasted for close to an hour before it started winding down, so I started to explore more of the market. Stopping at a pen to take a few pictures, I was invited to tea by the friendly local who owned the camels. Sitting down and trying to communicate with them in my broken Arabic, they offered me fresh camel milk. I felt welcomed by the hospitality of these lovely people who did not know who I was, but invited me to drink tea with them. Apart from Camels, the market also has other livestock like sheep and goat of all sizes and color. They were well fed and kept in smaller pens with a caretaker watching over them. The week before Eid Ul Adha is when this part of the market comes alive with locals and expats all jostling to purchase a sheep to sacrifice during the blessed day. Otherwise I was told, it was the caretaker’s job to stop the horned sheep’s from charging each other. This is a fantastic experience for those of you who love a lil’ adventure, and a journey back in time to when things were a lot simpler. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 75
