It was a challenging trip. Your biggest competitor is yourself. The challenge wasn't the physical aspect, but breaking your mental boundaries to push yourself to reach the peak. Reaching the top is great, doing it for Beit Mawaddah is greater.

KILI4MAWADDAH a cause bigger than a mountain 20 incredible women, 5,895 meters of grit and passion. A climb for a worthy cause. By Mona Shahab

It’s 3 a.m. on March 23. Nauseous, light headed, exhausted, sleepy, cold, and tired of wiping silent tears with the back of our gloves, 22 hikers place one foot in front of the other. Each footstep represents a brick and each brick represents a smile. Would “mind” out-win “matter?” Only time would tell. Rewinding the tape somewhat, “I want to climb a mountain!” echoed in The Empowerment Hub’s humble office on a sunny afternoon back in 2015.

16 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

Mawaddah Women Charity honored us with a visit to discuss potential collaboration, and in the midst of the conversation, one of their board members took us by surprise when she mentioned the magic word “mountain.” “It takes a village to raise a child.” We’ve joined forces as a community to help build a happy, friendly and most importantly, safe environment for children of divorcees. Today, Mawaddah is the legal hub for visits. “Beit Mawaddah” aka “Mawaddah Home” is a safety haven where visiting hours take place; drop offs, pick-ups and more. It’s every child’s right to feel safe with their parent/caregiver, and it’s every parent’s right to know that their child is safe during their absence.

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD

YOUR MONEY P E R S O N A L I T Y PART TWO

Last month, we introduced the key money personality types. This month we try to present some expert advice for each type. According to “Success Resources” (srpl.net), here are a few pointers: To the Big Spender You must set – and stick to – certain limits. Keep a diary of all your purchases so you can see where you’re leaking cash and cut back. Devise a budget, then put away your credit cards and give yourself a weekly cash allowance. To the Saver To improve your financial future, take baby steps toward loosening up. Take a few risks in your investments. Don't 20 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

let all of the fun parts of life pass you by just to save a few pennies. Moderation is good and life is indeed about trying to balance things out. To the Shopper Take control of the credit card. Try to focus your effort on savings some money. Learn the philosophy behind successful savings plans. A good way also is to think about the lessadvantaged neighbor or friend and imagine how you would do in their shoes. To the Debtor Get your finances in order and set up a plan to start investing. If you need help (and you probably will) seek a pro and do your mental checks.

To the Investor Bravo! Keep it up. Investing –especially early- cultivates healthy money habits even without planning. The discipline needed to grow your capital cannot be acquired over night. Taking risk requires a certain amount of courage and vision. My only advice is to take “calculated risks” whereby you set certain goals from the start and work your way from there.

In the end, humans tend to change and evolve over time, age and life experiences. We are naturally hybrid creatures and there is no single personality type all the way. The description above helps define behavior toward money, and the purpose is to help us take a mirror image of such behavior and try to improve it as best as we possibly could. The Endeavor of Scale-Ups Endeavor’s Saudi Arabian chapter based in Riyadh is bringing the values of Endeavor in KSA. By Jou Pabalate

The Endeavor KSA entrepreneurs

Can you tell us about the story of Endeavor?

In 1997, Linda Rottenberg and Peter Kellner sat down and sketched their vision on the back of a napkin. Kellner had just returned from a Harvard Business School trip to China, where he had witnessed first-hand the boom in entrepreneurship that would transform that country. For Rottenberg, the light bulb moment for Endeavor came in the back of a taxi cab in Buenos Aires. She struck up a 22 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

conversation with the driver and was shocked to learn he had a PhD in engineering. She asked if he hadn’t considered becoming an entrepreneur instead of driving a taxi. “An empresario? (Spanish for big businessman),” he said dismissively. It suddenly occurred to her that there was no Spanish word for “entrepreneur.” The “business plan” that began on the back of a napkin has become a shared vision, cultivated and expanded by board members, staff and entrepreneurs around the globe.

Bader Alzahrani

Hanouf Al Ajmi

What's the rationale behind bringing Endeavor to Saudi Arabia?

Are there any other programs being ran by the organization?

Endeavor’s Model can help solving the main obstacles many entrepreneurs face throughout their journey of establishing new businesses. We aim to scale-up their business and provide them with services to help them make better decisions. Our main goal at Endeavor Saudi Arabia is to create more jobs and inspire a future of highimpact entrepreneurs.

Over the past two decades, Endeavor has shown that companies with significant revenue streams and proven business models have the most potential to transform entire ecosystems. In turn, these entrepreneurs become role models for new generations of founders, creating a of inspiration, mentorship and investment. The ultimate goal for Endeavor Saudi Arabia is to prosper the entrepreneurial ecosystem and support high-impact entrepreneurs so that they can build successful companies that create thousands of jobs, generate billions, and inspire numerous others to become role models.

Why should entrepreneurs seek to be part of Endeavor? Endeavor mainly helps entrepreneurs unleash their potential by connecting them to the best business leaders locally, regionally and globally through exlusive events, meetings and networking opportunities.

Can you name some of the entrepreneurs that Endeavor has taken under its wing? Our local office in Saudi Arabia has selected 12 high impact entrepreneurs leading nine companies since 2012. • Loai Naseem (Lomar) • Naif Alqahtani (Logistics Solutions Services) • Abdulmohsin Alrabiah (Shawarmer) • Amr Almadani and Saeed Saeed (National TalentS Co.) • Ahmed and Hassan Hamdan (Unifonic) • Ebrahim Aljassim (HungerStation) • Lateefa Alwalaan (Yatooq) • Kaswara and Soraqa Alkhatib (UTURN) • Khalid Alkhudair (Glowork)

A TRAVELING DO GOODER

How about traveling for the sake of social change? By Jood Al Harthy, Tasamy

24 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

Several aspire to join in, contribute, and further develop such a goodwill concept in our region. However, their enthusiasm cannot make up for their lack of hands-on knowledge. So, some adventurous souls decided to travel abroad to obtain experience in a social enterprise and then return to implement what they’ve learned.

SOURCE PHOTO/TRAVELSEEWRITE.COM/VOLUNTEERHQ.ORG

How to Be

The social enterprise spirit in Saudi is rising. Thriving business minds are creating an impact by launching start-ups that generate capital and offer lasting social solutions.

NOW THAT’S A SKILLSET.

Experiencing time in an international social enterprise will change you. This has been agreed on by the social entrepreneurs we’ve talked to, they were exposed to new situations and gained a valuable skill set.

GET YOUR SOCIALIZING ON. When your environment becomes social entrepreneurs, consultants, social programme developers and researchers, you’ll eventually catch the bug and adapt their mind set. By involving yourself in an international circle of dedicated colleagues you’ll learn their stories and the characters of the industry. You’ll come to realize the culture of social enterprises on a personal level.

“MOM, I’M GOING ON AN ADVENTURE!”

It’s a guaranteed promise that whatever department you’ll be involved in, the things you’ll see in a social enterprise aren’t the usual. Social enterprises deal with the societal areas that are yet to be developed, hence it’s a journey of exploring the full potential of every social problem. You’ll come across topics that you’ve never considered before, or knew you had any interest in.

I entered the financial department of a social enterprise for two weeks in London. I met inspiring individuals, and gained a supportive mentor. We still stay in touch and meet up whenever I visit. — Nuha AlZamil

While working with a social enterprise aiming to create special canes for seniors, I came into contact with the culture of the elderly on several levels. I’ve never considered the topic before, so the experience was an eye-opener — Firas AlJarrah

Remember, social entrepreneurs need the ambitious attitude, alongside the practical skillset. Once you get on a plane back to Saudi, you will contribute with your knowledge to the rise of the sector and encourage the spirit in others.

I’ve learned from my experience in India the importance of teamwork, timemanagement, impact assessment and accepting colleagues with different backgrounds and ideas. I empathize with people more now, I feel more compassionate than ever. — Bariah Elajou The Author: Tasamy is a nonprofit organization that focuses on finding sustainable solutions to social problems by encouraging and empowering youth, leaders, private and governmental institutions to achieve social entrepreneurship. How did the idea of documenting the old neighborhoods of Al Madinah come about?

When I came back from overseas I saw a changing city whose development is taking down parts of its history so I wanted to keep something for the next generation to remember how Madinah used to look like.

What thoughts pass through your mind when walking through Al Madinah’s soon-to-beremoved neighborhoods?

Nostalgia that comes from growing up in a similar neighborhood and amazement of how skillful the craftsmen were in using their environment to build these houses from the surrounding materials, lava rocks and palm trees.

bread and bananas for a dose of potassium.

What is your favorite city in Saudi Arabia and why?

Al Madinah. It’s an open museum full of wonders and it’s in the center of too many favorite destinations. If you go to the east you will find lava fields and Mount Ohain where the greatest inscriptions can be found. If you go up to the north you’ll be driving by some parts of the Ottomans forts, castles and ancient dams to reach Khaybar and Alula. To the west you will reach Badr and the great Red Sea where you can snorkel at the reef. South, there are beautiful villages and nature spots like Khals and Milha, Wadi Alfar’e and Himanah.

Khauper carters

You've taken photographs of many places in Saudi Arabia. What was your favorite place to take pictures of and why?

Khaybar is number one on my list and I’m still not done with it. Its lava and inactive volcanoes are just amazing and surreal and there are many places including castles and an old town that need to be explored and documented. It’s like traveling back in time when going there.

Doors of Medina

What do you pack in your bag when you go exploring or hiking?

Camera first, a knife, first aid kit just in case, and a lighter. For some long trips or hikes I take canned food,

Are you self-taught or did you learn photography in school?

Any advice for future documentary enthusiasts?

You do a lot of aerial photography; how do you manage that?

What are your future plans?

I feel it is more about what I feel when seeing something. I had an elective course in photography while doing my degree but I remember holding a camera since 10 or so, and I’m still learning. Mobile phones helped me with shaping my skills as it was the start of my documenting journey. I learned so much from workshops, reading and seeing great photographer’s works like Richard Avedon and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

When it comes to aerial photography, I have to mention Captain Abdulaziz Aldakheel. He’s a sport pilot who uses a light sport powered parachute two-seater and single engine aircraft to document the region of Madinah from the sky. We decided to cooperate in doing this and after a while we decided to establish the Erth aerial photography team. Our mission is to document the heritage of the region and its landmarks from the sky. So far our team has grown to 14 members strong.

28 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

Keep on exploring. Learn and push yourself by walking the extra mile. For out of city exploration and documentation trips, be safe and take care while doing this, always be prepared and let relatives know where you’re heading. For urban or in-city documenting I would suggest that you get closer to your subject and go deep in details, read more about what you are focusing on and be prepared. Don’t be shy but respect the spaces of others.

I have established Almthba, an interdisciplinary studio focusing on the region of Madinah by promoting art and helping researchers, in addition to planning eco and specialized tours. There is also the Erth Team where we will keep on exploring and documenting the region of Madinah as well as the rest of the country eventually. almthba

But it wasn’t enough, and soon after he ended up upgrading to a carbon fibre bicycle, calling it Pegasus, and going solo and traveling over 15,000 kilometers in 15 different countries.

How'd you get into cycling? And why did you choose bikes in particular?

A movie about cycling changed everything for me. Since I saw that movie, I decided to own a bicycle right away. It reminded me of the happiness I used to experience as a child riding around the neighborhood.

Does the kind of bike make a difference?

At first, no, it didn’t make any difference for me. Simply because I was just starting to learn about the different kinds of bicycle and I was more interested about the joy of riding regardless of the type of the bicycle. After a while, I became more aware of the massive world of bicycles and I realized my SR 600 bicycle was not good enough for the type of trips I wanted to do.

What was the very first country you toured?

Locally, my first trip was from Riyadh to my hometown, the city of Dawadmi which is located 307 kilometers away from Riyadh. Internationally, I toured the entire country of Japan, form the north to the south of it. It took me 38 days to finish this trip and I traveled 3,152 kilometers.

You've toured a total of 15 countries on your bike, What would you say was your favorite experience? I would say Japan, because it was my first international trip.

Any special reasons behind the countries you choose?

I seek to tour the world, and I plan my new destinations with regard to this goal. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 31

What's the hardest aspect of any trip?

The weather, sometimes the language, and of course being away from my family.

What causes have you championed?

First, spreading the message of Islam in Japan, “Islam is the religion of peace. Second, raising awareness about breast cancer in all GCC countries. Third, in South Korea, spreading the message of friendship between the two nations of Saudi Arabia and

In your bike bag, you always pack... COFFEE!

Why did you decide on Riyadh-Muscat for your route during your October breast cancer awareness ride? I was planning to tour Saudi Arabia for that cause, but I wanted to make the trip bigger and therefore decided to tour the GCC countries.

Somehow, every cyclist we've heard of in Riyadh started from the Darajati group. What does it feel like knowing you were there for the birth of the cycling movementin Riyadh? It means a lot. Starting this group was a blessing for me and my society and I hope it will grow even more and become well-known internationally as well. South Korea. Fourth, the three continents trip, starting from Morocco and finishing in Turkey raising awareness about the rights of handicapped people in Saudi Arabia. My last trip involved touring Taiwan to raise awareness about sign language used by people who are deaf or suffering from hard of hearing problems in Saudi Arabia. 32 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

Anything you'd like to say to people who would like to follow in your footsteps?

You need a heart of STEEL to follow in my footsteps, always trust in your abilities and also believe in yourself. You are great and you can do anything, just have faith. omarcyclist oalomair

Diving in SAUDI ARABIA The variety of marine life in the Red Sea surrounding Jeddah, Farasan Islands, Yanbu, and neighboring areas has to be seen to be believed. Moreover, the clear visibility and calm/warm waters, make Saudi’s diving conditions even more pristine. It is no wonder why Saudi’s waters is one of my favorite escapes.

Coral reefs

Fact: KSA is home to some of the best and most accessible diving sites in the world (ALL year long). By Nelly Attar

34 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

Some of my favorite spots include Al Nakheel Beach Al Ghulam Resort, Sheraton Beach, Boiler Wreck, Ala’s Reef, Redmah Wall, Ann Ann Wreck, Cable Wreck, and Miss Mara Wreck. You may encounter any of the following marine creatures while diving in these phenomenal spots:

COURTESY PHOTO

Still very much under-dived, most of the reefs that stretch parallel to the coast north and south of Jeddah are in good condition. With 1,830 kilometers of coastline on the Red Sea and over 500 kilometers of coastline on the Persian Gulf, there is PLENTY to dive.

• Dolphins (many and many) • Angelfish • Snappers • Triggerfish • Lionfish • White-tip reef sharks (oh yeah) • Barracudas • Tunas • Whalesharks (yup it’s true) Manta rays

Hammer heads

Despite the wonders of diving in Saudi, I must say, conditions have been on a steady decline throughout the years. Some of the shore dives in Jeddah have been heavily spear fished (even though spear fishing is banned). Additionally, coastal developments are polluting the water in some areas and global warming is creating some undesirable oceanic heatwaves. If you do plan on taking up diving as your new favorite

hobby, please do make sure to support the operators that respect and protect Saudi’s precious marine life. There are PADI affiliated groups operating in Riyadh that you can tap into in order to be a certified diver. The courses are for those interested in diving as a leisurely hobby. There will be pool time involved done within the city. Eventually you’ll be taken for a trip to the open waters. There’s a number of hours you need to meet for both the lessons in the pool and excursions. To learn more about diving here in Saudi Arabia, contact Rio Diving (Riyadh-based). A New Age For

SAUDI WOMEN IN MEDIA Al Juhara Sajer and Hessa Al Awwad dish on the “vlogging” life. By Aabiya Baqai and Anousha Vakani

Al Juhara Sajer The Professional Dreamer

Al Juhara Sajer was a college student who got really ill one day, forcing her to stay at home and spend time on YouTube, only to realize that there was a lack of local Arab vloggers. She then decided to make her own videos. 36 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

Sajer started off with a beauty and fashion vlog aimed at young Arab girls for tips and tricks on style and beauty. She then added a travel vlog. “The second channel is where my viewers follow me around to different destinations.”

Sajer refers to herself as a “professional dreamer” because she has managed to convert her dream of traveling and vlogging into a career. Sajer adds, “Rather than just making vlogs when I’m bored, I get paid to travel, to go to events and to see the world, which is a dream come true.”

STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF

She preferred not to show her face at first but eventually began showing it in 2015 when she believed it was the right choice to make and the audience was ready.

Sajer believes that new age media has completely evolved the audience experience. “In online media, because a lot of people are exposed to honest relatable perspectives, it’s a major change from traditional media.” She also thinks that the role of Saudi women in this media is slowly and steadily gaining strength. “When I started my channel four years ago, I got a lot of negative comments from men telling me that YouTube is not my place and I should focus on house chores instead. I was shocked, so I approached my dad for advice and he told me not to quit, but rather change their mentality and pave the way for other women.”

Sajer has even involved her father in her videos. “I want to show my father in more videos because I want families to watch this and realize that if my father is supporting me, others can do the same for their daughters.” Email: aljuhara.sajer@gmail.com jaysajer jayscherry JaysCherry and JaysRandomness

DIY videos in Arabic. After discussing the idea with her family, she started creating videos that focused on nail art. Al Awwad was especially obsessed with “beautiful hands and nails.” At first, Al Awwad didn’t appear in her videos. She only began to appear in them three to four years after starting her channel and admits that she was a bit concerned at first, as she covers her face. However, Al Awwad knew that if she would always be too scared to take the next step, she would never achieve her dreams. She is confident in her choice now, saying that there was a lot more support than criticism and while many of her fans were confused, most felt closer to her. Now a partner with Duniati and despite the growth of her 38 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

YouTube channel, Al Awwad says that her channel is all about her fans: “I don’t see my lens as an object, it’s like I am looking at my audience. At the end of the day, the most important measurement of my success is if I can draw a smile on my fans’ faces.” She also says that her fans encourage her to keep going with their nice words and support. She recalls an incident where a mother emailed her saying that she couldn’t communicate with her teenage daughters, until they discovered her videos and now make it a weekly routine to watch her videos together.

Al Awwad draws inspiration from everything around her from abaya designs and makeup to music videos. She gets a lot of ideas from the Internet, her fans and her mom. Email: ask_miva@hotmail.com mivasnailartfans miva_flowers mivaflowers

ARTIST’S CORNER MEET THIS MONTH’S EMERGING ARTIST!

What is, in your opinion, the best thing you’ve ever created and why?

The mistakes. Because they are what made me who I am today.

What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? Anything you’d like to see changed?

NAME:

Faris Alosaimi AGE: 24

To be quite frank, I don’t know.

Full Time Artist g MEDIUM: Drawin By Johara Almogbel

What got you started?

Art has always been a fascinating subject for me. It was the reason for me leaving the house, traveling, having adventures and getting into new situations, as well as visiting galleries and meeting artists all over the world. Art was my motive to continue tolerating life’s repetitive routines.

Why do you art?

I do art because I need it. 40 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning? How do you think up your concepts?

It’s usually built on a fleeting emotion or certain state. The concepts behind my art usually speak about myself and my personal experiences, which is also why I tend to hide a large number of them. It scares me that I might uncover myself completely in an artwork, which is why there’s always an intentionally missing or hidden aspect in my work.

WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS?

Anyone and everyone who silently added beauty in the world, and left peacefully.

FAVORITE PIECE OF ARTWORK BY SOMEONE ELSE?

I’m really bad at remembering names, so it’s somewhat impossible for me to remember the name and title of my favorite painting.

DAY TRIPS

EVERY RIYADHI

1. Edge of the World

SHOULD TAKE

The Edge of the World is like the Grand Canyon of Riyadh. The vast valley of cliffs guarantees a wonderful view of the skies and the best terrains this side of the Kingdom. Stopover: Acacia Valley, great picnic spot with an array of fauna, butterflies, dragonflies and birds. The area dries up during extreme heat, otherwise it is picnic perfect. Location: 24°56'42.1"N 45°59'31.9"E

Discover Riyadh and its surroundings by heading out this weekend. By Jou Pabalate

Situated on the side of Mt. Jubayl at the Wadi Sulay, just out of Alkharj Road is a cave that shelters an underground lake. Heet Cave is also known among locals as the Ain because of its eye-shaped opening. You can in fact take a dip into the crystal clear waters but we advise everyone to not attempt diving deeper if you aren’t a trained professional and don’t have the right equipment. What amazes us about Heet Cave is it’s open all year round—the entrapment protects the lake from getting hit by the drought. Location: 24°29'08.0"N 46°59'49.0"E

42 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

2. Heet Cave

DR Helpful Tip There’s no lifeguard on-site.

The DQ trail offers an amazing nature experience and a safe environment to run and trek. The trail is encapsulated within the grounds of the Diplomatic Quarters but stretches all the way to the borderlines of Wadi Hanifa.

Stopover: Tuwaiq Palace gardens and the small parks along the way.

DR Helpful Tip Location: Many starting points within the DQ, our suggestion is to start from the Starbucks and that will lead you to the end point of Kindi Plaza or vice versa.

Location: 24°41'12.5"N 46°37'23.4"E

3. In-City Trails (Diplomatic Quarter)

4. Thumama National Park Hike around Hanifa Valley then head to Al Diriyah to do more trekking but with a more historical twist. Al Diriyah is a must visit because it has preserved a good portion of its land to reflect the Najd heritage. After you go all Tomb Raider, have a bite at Bujairy and top your night with a visit to the old souks.

Camp central, heritage site and adventure time all rolled into one. Drive off to Thumama for some off-road fun, they’ve got everything from horseback riding, kite flying, flying itself at that and RVs. There’s also a designated area for campers to rent out tents and have a barbecue. Visit and check out old dwellings and historical tools (think rough house towns from old western movies but cooler). Location: 25°16'15.9"N 46°31'33.0"E

5. Al Diriyah and Hanifa Valley (Wadi Hanifa)

Modern day “You’ve Got Mail.” By Felwa Alhudaithy

Last night I watched a riveting documentary about famed writer and director Nora Ephron. It revolved around her youth, her trials and errors, as well as her enchanting journey. If we watch the slow evolution of Ephron’s style in both writing and fashion, we’ll soon discover that fashion dominated her life. Even throughout her movies, we see her leading women as she writes them, trendy, funny and always witty. If I was one of her leading women, I’d be

Kathleen Kelly from “You’ve Got Mail.” I am being totally biased here, but this is one of my favorite movies of all time. If I had a chance to deconstruct Meg Ryan’s wardrobe in the film and modernize it without losing the soul of her character, I think I’ll end up with classic lines and a closet full of Ellery; because Kelly, the character Ephron wrote, loves the curves and cuts of the pieces and frankly she has no time to love another brand. Ellery’s 70s-inspired tailoring strikes a careful balance between restraint and romance.

She reads Vogue to catch up on the fashion world and what’s hot and what’s not!

The Australian brand and its creative director Kym Ellery has wooed women the world over, and Kathleen Kelly wouldn’t be an exception. Known for dramatic bellbottoms and light butterfly sleeves, the tailored flare rules at this brand. Ellery has carved a glamorous lifestyle, globetrotting and making friends with famous international actresses and musicians, and I presume Kelly would want that worldly magic to strike her beautiful mind and soul. way to travel. Invest in a lightweight, roll-along case and wave goodbye to baggage reclaim, lost luggage and expensive cab fares at your destination. But do we warned, the sky does have a limit as many airlines stipulate size restrictions for overhead bags. Check before you buy.

Get Packing Fit more in and reduce creasing with a well-packed, organized case. Packing cubes, see-through zip pouches, stuff sacks and shoe bags all help and make finding even the smallest of items quick and easy. Utilize the bottom end of the case (where the wheels are) for heavy items such as shoes and toiletries and notice how much easier the case is to pull.

Lotions and Potions Toiletries can be heavy and bulky so decant essentials into small bottles and in addition make use of the hotel freebies. Optimize space further and pack cleansing wipes to replace your usual facial routine. Don’t forget your travel toothbrush and paste and remove items from packaging where possible.

Think Capsule Wardrobe Less is definitely more if you want to travel light and still look stylish. Select colors carefully and pack key pieces that will mix and match to create multiple outfits. Choose accessories that are versatile. A shawl has multiple uses as a scarf, an extra layer for warmth and a cover-up on a beach. Lightweight sports clothes and swimwear take up very little space and are a must for making the most of hotel facilities.

Travel Savvy Don’t be a technophobe when it comes to traveling. Travel details, essential paperwork and books can all be accessed on your smartphone, tablet or e-reader. Download your airline’s app before departure to have up to date flight information at your fingertips. Pack a multi-port USB charger and leave unnecessary plugs at home.

THE ART OF COFFEE CREATION Appreciate your coffee at The Ritz-Carlton Riyadh In some parts of the world, coffee is not just a caffeineloaded drink but so much more. Coffee has been connecting people for hundreds of years, especially in the Middle East, and it is deeply rooted in the heart of the local culture and tradition. There is an art behind its creation and a pleasure behind its consumption. Today, coffee has become a symbol for appreciation, hospitality and warm greetings. 60 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016 ADVERTORIAL

Freshly roasted beans grounded daily.

The Ritz-Carlton Riyadh family is well trained in the craft of coffee making and exceptional coffee presentation. They use the top 5 percent of beans produced in the world originating from Colombia, East Java and Ethiopia. The Ritz-Carlton Riyadh offers Colombian coffee, which is known and proven to be the best of its type and is grown at 5,500 feet above the sea. Fresh from one of the oldest farms in Ethiopia, the Ethiopian coffee at The Ritz-Carlton Riyadh comes with berries, jasmine and bittersweet chocolate flavors. Extra handpicking makes this the highest grading of all Ethiopian coffees. Born in the island of East Java, this historic vibrant and bold flavored coffee of nuts, grapes and chocolate offers strong flavors to coffee lovers. The Ritz- Carlton Riyadh uses four different methods of coffee brewing that give a special flavor and scent to the coffee: Syphone includes a vacuum technique which produces an intense hot and bold coffee cup packed with flavor yet very clean and smooth on the palate.

Four mastered methods of brewing

The Pour Over method is a traditional way of brewing coffee in the most gentle possible way, to create a smooth and aromatic experience.

Meanwhile, AeroPress applies pressure to coffee beans through a filter to produce a creamy and pure taste, and the Cold Brew technique brings not just visual, but also tasty benefits. When cold coffee is brewed fewer bitter and acidic notes from the coffee bean are extracted. Hence, the coffee will be sweeter, fruitier and soft. HOW TO MAKE A

SAUDI CARE PACKAGE For travelers, students abroad and hostess gifts. Here are DR’s picks for the perfect Saudi Care Package! By Johara Almogbel

There’s absolutely nothing Saudis like more than their food. Rain, shine, sandstorm, England, Timbuktu… whatever state we’re in or place we’re at, kabsah isn’t really far from our minds.

MUSAFFER DALLAH

SPICES

DATES

RICE

Well, doh. How else can you make your kabsah without Saudi spices? Take all of your spices, measure them out according to taste, mix them together and pack them in tubes.

Non-Saudi dates are never as good as the original stuff. And maknooz dates are really hard to spoil, have long expiration dates and pack very easily.

Perfect kabsah rice is hard to find abroad, and a bit more pricey. A small bag of your favorite basmati won’t take much space and is bound to make you happy.

Musaffer Dallah

You got coffee, but where are you supposed to make it? That’s where the Mussafar Dallah comes in. A nifty little bag that comes with a small electric dallah, as well as a container for dates, fanajeen (coffee cups), and a measuring cup. it’s perfect for both gahwa veterans and beginners. .

ARABIC COFFEE

GISHTA

This is a no-brainer. Coffee is where coffee must be, and it’s easily made anywhere. Get a ready-made pack from Anoosh or Yatooq, or if you’re more oldschool, get your own ground coffee and hail in unbreakable plastic jars. Plus points if you add pretty little labels on them.

Yeah fresh cream is good and everything, but if we were being absolutely honest with ourselves? Taj’s tinned cream has a flavor you can’t beat. Another one for nostalgia.

KRAFT’S CHEESE TINS For some reason, Kraft’s processed cheddar cheese never took off so popularly as it did here. And there are few people who won’t claim nostalgia when they see one. This is another one for far-away-from-home students, or long term travelers in small hotel rooms.

SPRAYER This isn’t food, but it is absolutely essential for everyone and anyone outside our lovely sprayer-friendly country. Seriously. Other countries, we love you, but how do you keep CLEAN? Ahem. Anyway, there are different types of travel sprayers, buy what suits you best and put it into your pretty awesome care package! Toilets around the world will thank you.

FEAR THE FATS

By Coach Sara

I’ve actually been a butterlover for two years now ever since I read about it in a Time Magazine article titled “Eat Butter.” Yes, you read that right. In a world where fat is the enemy, and fatfree mayonnaise our bestie. But while this title may be distressful to many, it actually challenges some of our core beliefs and backs it up with research and common sense.

What is Bulletproof Coffee? Bulletproof Coffee is the invention of Dave Asprey, an entrepreneur and health blogger. It’s a blend of a combination of organic coffee, grass-fed butter and MCT oil (also called brain octane oil, made by processing coconut and palm kernel oils to change the chemical structure, making them more easily digested and absorbed). Ideally, you want to have your bulletproof coffee for breakfast. This means you won’t have the usual protein, fiber and carb combo but you will be having nothing but caffeine and fat instead. Why? According to Asprey, you feel energized due to caffeine; we all know that but what about fat? Restricting carbohydrates will help your 66 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

body burn fat for energy, suppress release of insulin which in return will maximize your body’s production of growth hormones. Fat will act as an appetite suppressant, which could help you eat

less throughout the day and eventually lose weight. But even with all these benefits, butter in your coffee does not sound very appetizing. I was intrigued enough to try it for myself.

My Experience

DAY ONE

DAY TWO

I ordered the bulletproof coffee, bulletproof brain octane oil, grass-fed butter and organic ghee.

I blended my French pressed coffee, brain octane oil and organic ghee. Smells delicious, looks weird and tastes strange. But I drank it anyway. Ten minutes into the drinking of the coffee, I noticed a shift in my mood. I caught myself humming Frank Sinatra. But there was something wrong. Dave said I should see a foamy layer but my coffee was not foamy, it looked like it didn't blend pretty well.

I decided to add in butter instead of ghee. Butter blended perfectly and the coffee tasted so much better, foam and all. But my conscious was killing me. I was using regular butter and even if it may still have some of the organic butter benefits, I couldn’t help but feel guilty adding it to my coffee. So for the rest of week I was alternating between regular coffee and organic ghee till day seven.

I would like to report that my butter was rejected by Saudi customs but that’s fine since I still had my ghee. The plan was to drink bulletproof coffee every morning for seven consecutive days.

THE VERDICT 100 percent better attention, concentration and satiety. Downside: it was hard to find the organic products Coach Sara Coach Sara is yoga and spinning enthusiast, a flexitarian and a book addict. Why You Just Can’t Stop Eating Saying no to bogus hunger pains. By Amal Al Toaimi

Feeling hungry is your body’s way of telling you it needs fuel to function. However, I’m referring to the days when you just finished lunch, but half an hour later you feel hungry again. Common reasons you’re always feeling the need to munch.

“When your stomach is empty for too long, your body will release more ghrelin, an appetite-stimulating hormone, leaving you feeling famished,” said Amanda Foti, M.S., R.D., a senior dietitian at Selvera Wellness; this results in overeating. Try eating a healthy meal or snack every three to four hours. 70 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

2. You Are Eating Too Many Carbs and Sugars

Eating carbohydrates and sugar will make it almost impossible to feel satisfied. These carbs give you a sugar rush and a burst of energy and then crash, causing your body to crave more; a continuous cycle of dissatisfaction. Try pairing carbs with protein and healthy fat.

3. You’re Stressed

Stress increases the body’s production of the hormone cortisol, which increases appetite. Research and studies found that stress increases sugary and fatty food cravings. These foods will comfort you momentarily, but will increase your snack cravings. Try joining a gym class or walking instead.

STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF

1. You Are Not Eating Enough

6. You’re Not Eating the Right Balance of Nutrients

Your snack or meal should have three components: protein, fiber and healthy fat. Together they help slow digestion, keeping blood sugar stable and keeping you fuller for longer.

7. You’re Not Getting Enough ZZZZ

Sleep is linked to two hunger hormones, leptin and ghrelin. Leptin decreases appetite and ghrelin increases it. When you are not sleeping enough, leptin drops and ghrelin soars; making you hungry. Aim for eight hours minimum of rest per night.

8. You’re Suffering From a Medical Condition

If you’ve tried the above and you’re still at “can’t stop, won’t stop,” then it’s yourcue to visit a doctor. Some health issues that affecthunger can be hyperthyroidism, depression, diabetes and anxiety.

4. You Are Not Drinking Enough H2O

Sometimes our bodies mistake hunger for dehydration. When you feel hungry, drink a cup of water; if after half an hour you’re still hungry then you should grab a snack. Always keep a water bottle with you.

5. You’re Not Considering What You’re Eating Eating sensibly means paying attention to what you’re eating instead of just chowing it down. Chew your food slowly, picking the most nutritious and filling items.

The Poor GLUTEN Story Read and make an informed decision. By Maha Al Jawini, Clinical Dietician

72 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

Most of us have heard of the term “gluten” in the past decade, yet many have a pretty poor understanding of how it fits into a healthy lifestyle. Before we rush into vilifying this poor protein, let’s start with some basic information. Gluten (from Latin gluten, "glue") is an ancient and complex combination of proteins found in wheat, barley

Gluten in its purest form is clean, but why do many people avoid eating it regardless? Wheat and other grains have been stripped of their nutritional value through

SPIRITUALITY

My Alluring EARTH

Take in the endless beauty around us. By Fatima Damad – AAT

Traveling around the world is a very spiritual experience, as we get to witness the beauty of Earth and the people in it. Allah has created our incredible Earth for us to appreciate and learn from it.

The little stones and the soil that we walk on have their own beauty, if only we took a few minutes to observe. The birds, even the crows and pigeons in the cities are beautiful, we only need to look at them with some love. 74 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

“And the earth We have spread it out, and set thereon mountains standing firm, and have produced therein every kind of lovely pairs (of plants).” Qur’an (50:7)

“Do they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.” Qur’an (16:79) Beauty has a different meaning for each one of us, and if we look close enough, everything has its own beauty.“And we have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with stars.” Qur’an (67: 5)

The people around us are alluring in their own unique way. Someone’s voice and someone’s natural smell might be beautiful if not their face or hair.

Also Allah has created everything with a purpose and that little worm, which we trampled on this morning must have served some purpose in balancing our ecosystem. Every human is important, even the cruelest of them; without them we wouldn’t know that we shouldn’t be like them and should work to be better persons. We are interlinked and interconnected with every living creature on this earth, and so we should take time to appreciate the beauty and be thankful for every single thing that Allah has bestowed upon us. So travel, explore and observe, even if you only get to see outside your window, remember Allah in whatever you see. Remember Allah and Allah will remember you. Beauty is all around us in nature and in the people around us, we just need to learn to appreciate them and be thankful. Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

SOUTH AFRICA Every country has its diversity, but South Africa gives the term a new meaning. Story by Otbah Rayess

Our journey began when five friends from around the world decided to converge at Johannesburg, one of world’s largest urban forests. I started with taking a 7-hour flight from Jeddah. Johannesburg is a vibrant city that has a lot to offer visitors, from historic sights of political importance, traditional ties, cultural connections, to museums, art galleries and craft makers.

MARCH 4

In Johannesburg our stay was at The Villa Royale by the Saxon. It offers tours and outdoor adventures exploring South Africa’s traditional roots, diverse cultures and lively spirit. Tours can be tailored to suit your interests and schedule. The first day was chill. We toured the city for a while and had some African BBQ for dinner, looking forward to an exciting day. 80 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2016

After breakfast, it was an hour’s journey by helicopter getting to Shambala, which literally stands for paradise on Earth. Shambala Private Game Reserve is situated in the Limpopo Province, 2.5 hours’ drive north of Johannesburg or a 55-minute flight by helicopter. Our stay was at Zulu Camp for two nights where we had delectable food and impeccable service. The reserve provided safari rides in the wild and a riverside drive as well to see the hippos and crocodiles at sunset. We also had the opportunity to ride quad bikes. Nothing tops a relaxing spa and massage after a long day.

MARCH 7

We took a helicopter back to Johannesburg to catch a flight to Cape Town. There we landed at Waterfront, which is at the edge of Cape Town's charming historical harbor. MARCH 10

Cape Town Film Studios gave us a tour around their massive sets for shows like “Black Sails” as well as film sets such as “Long Walk For Freedom.” Later on we went to Boulders beach and spent most of the day swimming and playing with penguins. At the Boulders, penguins flock all over the place, a unique sight in Africa. Our dinner was at an Indian restaurant called Bukhara followed by a walk around the waterfront and then we went up on the Ferris wheel.

MARCH 12

We watched a rugby match between Sharks and Stormers at the Newlands Stadium. After the match, a Summer Sunset concert was held at the Kirstenbosch Gardens.

MARCH 11

Table Mountain greeted us as we ascended with the help of a cable car. It remains the most iconic landmark of South Africa. It is also the country’s most photographed attraction.

For our final day, we went to a cheetah sanctuary where we were in the company of these magnificent creatures, young and old. From there, we went to jam and wine farms to have lunch.

Al Faw had a strong Greek influence due to the farreaching influence of Alexander’s conquests and it, which can be seen in the Hellenistic paintings and other artifacts found in the city. The Kindah tribe originally hailed from what is modern day Yemen. After the demolition of the Ma’rib Dam, different tribes dependent on the dam for their livelihood, looked for resettlement elsewhere and some went as far as southern Iraq. The Kindahs, a Bedouin tribe, chose to relocate to the fertile

The construction of Sea Island 4 began over 50 years ago in Japan, on orders of the Arabian American Oil Company (later known as Saudi Aramco). The Japanese constructed a

barge that was then shipped to Bahrain were it was assembled; 10 long caisson legs, each of which are 215 feet long, were attached to form the structure’s foundation. The structure was then towed to its location off the coast of Ras Tanura. At Ras Tanura, various other structures were added to the island that enabled the island to be self-sufficient. When Sea Island 4 was added to the existing stretch of manmade steel islands, the

overall length of this offshore oil loading facility reached 1.1 miles and a loading capacity of 439,000 barrels of crude oil. From above, Sea Island 4 looks like an enormous water insect with a thin body that has short appendages bulging from either side.
