CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Jesus Soto, Jr. Pacific Gas and Electric Company What does it mean to be a part of the fastest growing minority in the U.S.? Statistics show that one in four Americans under the age of eighteen are Hispanics. With the growing numbers comes a sense of social responsibility. The role of access to and completion of higher education will ultimately be the difference in how Hispanics mold and shape our country. What are the major values of your heritage? How have they helped you in your career? The Hispanic culture is grounded in deep family values and a strong work ethic. I am fortunate to have experienced these values firsthand. As a child, I saw how hard my parents worked every day. My father was a carpenter who worked for a civil works contractor building roads and bridges across the southwestern United States. From him, I learned the value of hard work and that you must “earn it.” He also taught me that everything you do bears your name, so “do it well,” instilling the value of excellence. Above all he stressed, “Never lose your integrity.” What advice would you give the next generation of Hispanic business leaders? What are some tips for other Hispanics beginning their careers? My advice to the next generation of Hispanic leaders is to take personal responsibility to make an impact and ultimately, a difference. It starts with being a positive role model for our families and in our communities in which we live and work. Don’t expect others to do things for you or for others to carry the burden on social issues.
