CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Yvania Garcia-Pusateri Miami University How do you see Hispanics moving forward in years to come? As the fastest-growing population, Hispanics are taking on powerful roles and making an impact in our society. We are no longer seen as a lower class. We are being elected to positions where our actions and decisions will not only benefit our community, but will better society. More of us are graduating from college as well as obtaining professional degrees. How has your heritage been beneficial or helpful in your career and/or business relationships? My heritage has shaped many of my values and impacted the way I lead my life. As a Latina in higher education I am able to connect with not only Latinos and Latinas, but students of color, in a holistic manner. I see my work as a form of advocacy. This approach has enhanced my relationships with students and motivates me every day to work harder for them. Are there any stereotypes of Hispanics/Latinos that should be refuted or are incorrect? We are not lazy, we are hard workers, and everything we do is for our families. Our fathers are not dominant men that do not tend to their families, but instead are caring, loving, and hardworking men that value their families above all else. We are spiritual people and resilient. We are not illegal immigrants that want to live off the government; we want to be seen as Americans.
