to Discovery Culture Festival 2015 Discovery College’s highlight, whole school arts and cultural event is now in its eighth year and has continued its evolution to become ‘Discovery Culture Festival’. With this evolution there is a strong, new inclusion of literature, with the addition of a range of wonderful activities that were previously part of the College’s annual Book Week. Through this you will see an enhanced and expanded Festival programme for 2015. Highlights include: Culture From street culture to classical culture our Festival will touch all bases. Year 2 students will learn the dance/martial art from South America of Capoeira and Y5 the moves of the urban street dance scene. In the Senior Electives Programme students can select from a range of cultural experiences, including exploring Indian culture, learning to DJ, skateboarding skills, and the acrobatics of Parkour, to name a few of many activities on offer. Visual Art, Music, Drama and Design This year ceramics enters the big events with Ceramic Artist Elaine Meigh working with Year 6 and Year 9 culturefestival.discovery.edu.hk
students. Year 3 will learn the traditions and techniques of Chinese watercolour painting and Year 4 will discover how to make a Chinese Dragon come to life. Kumi Masunaga will return to work with Year 7s on tribal and Japanese inspired percussion and Faust International Youth Theatre will work with Year 8s on the skills of stage fighting to support their development as thespians. In the Senior Electives Programme students can choose to learn about costume design, photography, cake decoration, visit leading Hong Kong artist Kacey Wong’s studio, design Apps, take part in a massive domino challenge, build a marble drop, and more. Senior students will perform the murder mystery ‘Christmas Cadavers’ and our talented musicians will be on show at Ensemble Evening. Literature Authors Sarah Brennan (working with Primary) and Nury Vittachi (working with Secondary) will show our students how to ignite imaginations and paint pictures with words. Senior students can also elect to learn the art of comic story telling from French artist and graphic designer Fred Boot.
Festival week designed to inspire a love of reading and literature in all our students. Our thanks goes to the large team of staff and parent helpers and supporters who make this event such a success. This year our longterm committee members Elspeth Shaw, Koren Thomas and Lauren Gordon have been joined by some new and enthusiastic recruits: College parents Ashley Wang, Mar-Loes Mantoua, Fahima Ahmad, Susannah Morley and Tomke Brockmeyer and the Library team of Leanne Sercombe and Maura Corcoran. In addition we wish to thank the teachers in our Primary and Secondary Arts departments for all their help in organising and running events, led by Fiona Aloft (Visual Arts), Matt Davis (Music) and Kathy La Brooy (Drama) and our Design team headed by Michael Fraser. A note from the DCPTA The Discovery College Parent Teacher Association (DCPTA) DCPTA is proud to support and fund Discovery Culture Festival 2015. It is exciting to see how the Festival grows and develops each year.
We would like to thank the local and international artists and educators who will be working with our students and encouraging their love and understanding of art, literature and culture. Discovery Culture Festival would not be possible without the support of so many staff, parents and students. They host our visiting artists and educators, run electives, share their artistic skills and cultural heritage, play music, read stories, and more. The committee would like to thank Peter Lasscock for his continued leadership of the Festival. We are delighted to welcome PYP Teacher Librarian Leanne Sercombe and MYP/DP Librarian Maura Corcoran, who have enriched the Festival with their love of literature.

African Tribal Storytelling Waka Waka! Chasing Tails. Year 1s will be delighted when percussion duo ‘Leon and Guy’ join them to weave a tale about tails in a session of story telling, song and drumming. Leon and Guy have played and performed for children and adult audiences in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Philippines and China. Their repertoire ranges from traditional world music to modern electronic/house music.

Brazilian Capoeira Hong Kong Capoeira (pronounced cap-oh-air-ah) returns to treat Year 2s to workshops in this high-energy combination of martial arts, acrobatics and dance. Thought to have originated within Brazil’s slave culture in the 16th Century, Capoeira is renowned for its fast flying kicks, bobbing and weaving techniques and acrobatic cartwheels and back flips, all performed to a Brazilian drum beat.

Chinese Watercolour Painting with Judyanna Li Year 3s, come and explore the rich culture and artistry of Chinese watercolour painting. Chinese watercolour painting is one of the world’s oldest continuing artistic traditions, dating back to early imperial China around 200BC. Using subtle colours and an economy of strokes, it beautifully conveys messages in its uniquely Chinese style. Students, mentored by Yuk Lin Judyanna Li, will focus on nature and landscapes, complementing a Unit of Inquiry Year 3s will undertake into How We Express Ourselves, with a focus on nature.

Chinese Dragon Dancing Year 4s, get set to bring DC’s House Dragons to life! Students will be introduced to the traditions, techniques, teamwork and fun of dragon dancing in these high-energy workshops, led by DC’s very own Chinese Dragon Dance master, Deputy Head of School Peter Lasscock.

Street Dance with DMR Party Rock! Dance includes many genres from Ballet to Street Dance and Year 5 students will be involved in learning popular street dance moves in a routine to entertain their peers at this year’s Culture Festival. They will be working with Rhianna Davies, a new teacher to DMR School of Ballet and a new resident of Hong Kong. She has trained in many genres, especially Modern and Tap at a Performing Arts College in England, and has taught and choreographed for several schools and performances during this time. Get ready to put your dancing shoes on Year 5s!

What’s Your Story? Primary students, prepare for Literary fun. This year the College’s ‘Book Week’, an annual event organised by the Library staff, is combining with Culture Festival to add literary life to this wonderful event. This year’s theme is “What’s Your Story?”.
Author Talks with Sarah Brennan Hong Kong-based international children’s author Sarah Brennan will return to DC to share some of her delightful stories with all Primary classes. Sarah is the author and publisher of the best-selling Chinese Calendar Tales as well as the hugely popular Dirty Story series. A featured author in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing International Literary Festivals since 2004, Sarah’s mission is to bring Chinese culture, history and landscape to young English speakers everywhere through the medium of humour, verse and funny illustrations, while at the same time giving children living in East Asia stories that relate to their own heritage. She believes passionately in rich vocabulary and intelligent text for primary school children: “dumbing down” is her particular bête noir! Her books can be read on many levels and are popular among children aged as young as 5 and as old as 12.

Decorate your Classroom as a Book Primary classes, what is your favourite book? During Culture Festival every Primary class will decorate their classroom as a book of their choice. The winning class will receive a pizza party.
Other Activities Festival week will see a host of other literary activities to delight, educate and enrich students’ love of literature. Look out for book quizzes on the Student Bulletin, the “Moo Card” competition, enjoy the lunchtime Primary Billingual Bazaar, and can you ‘Guess Who’s Behind the Book!’? Discovery College’s Peace Tree “Empowering children and youth to share their passion to create peace and celebrate diversity through the arts, literacy and fusion!” Come and view the beautiful Discovery College Peace Tree during Culture Festival. This project, undertaken by all Primary students, is inspired by Peace Tree International, a movement started by film maker and teacher Mitra Sen in Toronto, Canada, to foster peace through the sharing of culture among children. Made of bamboo and rattan utilising common construction materials used in Hong Kong, DC’s Peace Tree will be hung with symbols of peace created by Primary students. Students across Primary have been working on the Peace Tree in art classes this term. Using techniques they have been learning as part of their curriculum with Art teacher Kate Saunders, each year group has created paper symbols of peace to be hung on the tree. Students have worked together to decide the images they would use, with some years creating individual symbols and others collaborative works. Starting with rainbows in Year 1, Primary students have created beautiful, bright, colourful images of peace. Our Peace Tree will be in the main foyer of the College throughout Culture Festival. Creative with Clay Ceramics with Elaine Meigh Ceramics takes centre stage at this year’s Culture Festival, with artist, teacher and art consultant Elaine Meigh working with both our Year 6 and Year 9 students. Elaine has 35 years’ teaching experience in art, with a specialisation in ceramics. She started her teaching career in the UK, has taught in Indonesia and has worked for many years teaching IB and GCSE Visual Arts with ESF in Hong Kong. She is also an experienced Visual Arts examiner. Elaine is passionate about art and ceramics and is travelling extensively in Europe and Asia gathering materials for her next exhibition. She enjoys working in her studios in Thailand and France and passing on her love of art to students. She works mainly to commissions and has exhibited in D’Art in Wellington Street, Central. Elaine will work with students to create handbuilt pots using slab construction, with her emphasis on helping them build a firm foundation, confidence and enjoyment in handling clay. A wide variety of forms can be achieved using slab construction, allowing for students’ work to be unique. The ceramic forms will be fired and glazed. We look forward to seeing the students’ creations.

Drumming Around the World Year 7 Workshops Wednesday 9 December
Drumming Around the World with Kumi Japanese drumming and percussion maestro Kumi Masunaga will work with Year 7 students in a hands-on, high-energy drumming experience. This will be an exciting opportunity for students to create music on a wide variety of drums and percussion instruments from around the world. Feel the power of the beat! Discover your own rhythm! Students’ work with Kumi will complement elements of their music programme.

Stage Fighting Faust International Youth Theatre Company will instruct Year 8s in action-packed workshops on the demanding craft of Stage Fighting. The workshops will explore the world of stage combat in performance though a series of exercises and techniques. Students will focus on individual poses and footwork, followed by one-on-one combat skills. Safety will be paramount and students will learn how to engage in this fun, energetic theatrical skill while protecting themselves and their fellow actors.

Literary Life for Secondary With the College’s ‘Book Week’ combining with Culture Festival this year, Secondary students are in for some literary fun during Festival week. This year’s theme is “What’s Your Story?”.
Meet the Inimitable Nury Vittachi Years 12 and 13 will gain editorial insights when they meet international journalist and author Nury Vittachi during Festival week.

Nury will work with students on editorials and aspects of news media and journalism.

Senior Student Electives The Culture Festival Elective Programme for senior students returns with a wonderful line-up of guest teachers, artists, events and activities to engage and enrich our Year 10s, 11s and 12s. Students can choose from a range of electives, based on their curriculum needs and personal interests. Don’t miss this breathtaking play by Year 12 drama students. ‘Christmas Cadavers’ is a murder mystery inspired by Laura Wade’s “Breathing Corpses”. The play follows three different, intersecting storylines. The audience will be tasked with piecing together the various scenes in order to fully understand the plot. Join seven characters on a non-linear, winding, spiritual journey that eventually leads to murder, conflict…and a box of Celebrations!

Culture Festival Carnival Parade Launching the Festival will be the colourful, cultural Carnival Parade. Students and teachers are asked to dress up as their favourite artist, such as a musician, painter, actor or dancer, or as their favourite author or character from a book, play or movie. Students and teachers can also choose to wear a costume that represents the culture of their home country. The parade includes our whole school and parents are warmly invited to attend.

No Boundaries Bamboo Grove Come and see our bamboo sculpture displaying images that reflect on the experiences of our Year 10-12 students on their No Boundaries trips in November. No Boundaries saw our students travelling to countries including China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Laos. The programme introduced students to experiences that they would not meet in the confines of the classroom, developing their independence, interpersonal skills, and understanding and appreciation of different cultures.

DC Ensemble Evening Discovery College’s Ensemble Evening will present an exciting night of music performed by DC Ensembles that includes the Chamber Orchestra, Stage Band, Cobra Choir, and Secondary Choir. Protecting Nature, Finding Solutions Don’t Miss the Masarang Photographic Exhibition 27 November to 11 December DC Performing Arts Theatre Foyer
Come and see the special Masarang photographic exhibition, which is visiting the College from 27 November to 11 December as part of Discovery Culture Festival.
from 45 Hong Kong primary and secondary schools. The aim of the project was to help encourage HK students to read in English through environmental education.
Masarang Hong Kong Society is a registered charity whose volunteers aim to support the work of Dr Willie Smits and the charity he founded in Indonesia, the Masarang Foundation. The Masarang mission is to protect nature’s flora and fauna by empowering local people through the introduction of sustainable, locally adapted and culturally acceptable, solutions.
The photographs featured in the exhibition were taken by Ross Burrough, a DC parent, DB-based Island School teacher and wonderful photographer. Since September, the exhibition has been held in a number of ESF schools.
The photographic exhibition was created to support a project Masarang HK and ESF developed, with government support and funding, from August 2014 to August 2015. More than 10 ESF staff worked with Masarang HK to ‘teach/support’ 90 teachers

As part of their ‘No Boundaries’ trips, senior DC students have visited one of the Masarang rescue centres, Tasikoki, over the past three years. One of the Masarang Foundation projects, a zero waste sugar palm factory which DC students have visited, is featured in the November issue of National Geographic magazine.

There were three age categories – Junior (Years 1-5), Middle (Years 6-9) and Senior (Years 10-13). Thank you to DB’S Zak’s Restaurant and Highjump Photography who generously sponsored the competition prizes. The Junior category winner receives a Fuji Mini 25 instant print camera in white, the Middle winner receives a GoPro Hero 4 Camera, and the Senior winner receives both a GoPro Hero 4 Camera and a one-on-one workshop with photographer Claire Fraser. Commendation Certificates will be awarded to the runners-up in each age category. The winning photos in each category will be published on the school website and placed on display in school.

‘Andrew the Brilliant Balloon Man’ Show Treat your kiddies to a hilarious show when Andrew the Brilliant Balloon Man comes to DC. Children, prepare to laugh, howl, cheer and be amazed when you see “the funniest balloon man in the world”. Andrew has performed for royalty, music and movie stars ,and now he’s coming to perform for us. Proceeds help fund Discovery Culture Festival.
