The future is now at Blanco’s Rockin J’ Ranch and Vaaler Creek Golf Club

By Steve Habel, Contributing Writer

The more things change, the more they stay the same at Rockin’ J Ranch, the Hill Country-friendly, yet exclusive community on the southern edge of this thriving Central Texas hamlet. It’s the home of the highly rated Vaaler Creek Golf Club, which has firmly established itself as a must-play in the region and one of the top courses in the state.

The word has long been out about the quality of life in this neighborhood, so much so that less that 10 percent of the homesites originally available for purchase in the 1,064-acre community have not been snapped up by your neighbors and friends. Rockin’ J Ranch was plated on a wide series of hills and plateaus amongst rolling fields of flowers and stands of oak and cedar trees.

Rockin’ J Ranch offers a variety of custom homes

“We are continuing to do the things every day that have made Rockin’ J Ranch a success,” said Ryan Brubaker, the long-time sales manager at Rockin J’ Ranch. “Demand is high and we expect it to continue to be so. We treat people right and the property almost sells itself. People understand the advantages to living here where we are remote but not too much so. We are very proud of the community we have built here.” Rockin’ J Ranch was developed by Colonel Lee Roper, an El Paso businessman who was enamored by the property that has become this neighborhood from the minute he set eyes on the sprawling tract almost 35 years ago. The original ranch presence was preserved by incorporating some of

now than when Rockin’ J Ranch first came on line. That advance planning and attention to conservation were highlighted this summer when Stage 4 water restrictions were enacted in the Hill Country because of lack of rain and the drought. You can still get a plot of land at Rockin’ J Ranch for a handshake and as little as 10 percent down for lots from one-quarter acre to one acre in size. The development company offers in-house financing for the community’s lots (and is offering a no-interest loan if buyers make a 50 percent down payment) and will continue to carry the note until the land is built on. There is no requirement to build on purchased land, with some buyers preferring to hold on to their property as a valued investment. Children in the neighborhood are schooled in the Blanco ISD, which is considered one of the highest-performing districts in the region. The unique livability of Rockin’ J Ranch helps residents get away from it all while sacrificing nothing as far as amenities and convenience. The community has become a melting pot of residents from across Texas and from coast to coast. A recent trip to the community revealed deer at play in the open spaces of the scrub brush and mixing

with golfers at Rockin’ J Ranch’s most popular amenity, Vaaler Creek Golf Club. The golf course is the community’s centerpiece and one of the region’s most enjoyable golf courses, voted among the best public tracks in Texas. All real estate sales include basic membership. Vaaler Creek Golf Club is one of the finest and fun-filled golf courses in the state – if you’ve played it, you know. Opened as a nine-hole track in 2007, Vaaler Creek GC was considered by many golfers early on to be quirky and unique and wasn’t taken seriously. Once it was expanded to a full 18 holes two years later and allowed to grow up and grow, the course has won over players in droves. There is scarcely a day without a full tee sheet.

“Our course has enjoyed an increase in rounds played for the past three years and continues to set records every month,” said Adam Grosch, Vaaler Creek GC’s general manager and head PGA professional. “The people that play our course understand how good it is and how they continue to get a real bang for their buck. We take great pride in our rate of return players – it’s always good to see a familiar face with a smile on it.” The course was the first signature design by Michael Lowry, who fashioned

a much-tougher-than-its-carded 6,874yard, par-72 track among live oak and cactus. Lowry routed the layout along the rolling, scrub brush-filled prairies and worked in all sorts of cool features: ponds, sand hazards of sundry sizes, elevated tee shots and wavy, tree-lined fairways. Both nines offer far-reaching views of the famed surrounding region and the generous homesite setbacks mean that the houses near the course are mostly out of sight and unobtrusive, adding to the course’s isolated feel. The back-nine at Vaaler Creek is a bit more mature and not as severe as the newer outward half. Given its length, golfers might think they can overpower Vaaler Creek, but finding success here is not that simple. The course has a rich variety of long and short holes, with shots involving strategically placed bunkers and an occasional carry over water. The course’s true last line of defense is its lightning-quick, mounded and sectioned putting surfaces, which can make even the most aggressive players timid and prone to second-guessing. Much like the neighborhood surrounding it, Vaaler Creek GC was

Vaaler Creek GC matures into a ‘destination’ golf course Much like the neighborhood surrounding it, Vaaler Creek GC was destined to succeed because of the plan set in motion when it was founded – and because there has been continual work to improve the course over the past 16 years. The attention to detail at the course and the hospitality and downright Texas-ness from the staff shine through. And, per the plan, there have been improvements at Vaaler Creek. A new enclosed teaching area at the course’s practice facility allows for all-weather lessons and game improvement. A new short-game area is next on the agenda, with a timeline to be determined.

“We have been able to slowly and steadily make needed improvements and repair what little has needed the work on and around the course over the years,” said Grosch, who along with Colonel Roper and Brubaker have been at Rockin’ J Ranch and Vaaler Creek since its opening. “A lot of the things we do would not be noticed by the golfers because they are behind the scenes or under the ground. All golfers want is to have a seamless, fun experience on the course – I know we provide that at Vaaler Creek.” New restroom facilities have been opened adjacent to the club’s pavilion,

The community also sports a pool, pool house, and clubhouse built with rustic charm, and there are miles and miles of hiking trails and outdoor activities. There are condos for rental off the 10th tee of the golf course, a nature park, ponds for canoeing and fishing, and a pavilion near the community pool for after-golf dining, entertaining and special events. Everything you could ask for in a golf course community is here.

One of the neighborhood’s most anticipated events will take place on Nov. 11th when it will salute the community’s veterans with a ceremony in conjunction with Veterans Day. Roper, who is now 94, is a decorated 24-year Army veteran. The golf course was named in honor of Jack Vaaler, a war veteran who served with Roper;Vaaler passed away during the initial construction phase of the golf course.

Riverside Golf Course

re-opens in late November with year-long renovations complete Riverside Golf Course (Est. 1929), located in San Antonio, is one of the oldest golf courses in the state of Texas. It is operated by the Alamo City Golf Trail (“ACGT”), a 501c3 non-profit, that has been tasked with managing the City of San Antonio’s golf facilities since 2007. The other ACGT operated courses also include historic Brackenridge Park (Est 1916), Cedar Creek (Est 1989), Mission del Lago (Est 1989), Northern Hills (Est. 1969), Olmos Basin (Est 1963), San Pedro Par 3 & Driving Range (Est. 1945), and Willow Springs (Est 1923). These facilities are renowned golfing destinations in San Antonio and have been a favorite among local golf enthusiasts for years. Since December of 2022, Riverside has been closed while undergoing a

significant renovation aimed at providing an enhanced golfing experience. Relatively untouched since the early 1970’s, The Trail ambitiously embarked on a renovation of both Riversides’ 18-hole and 9-hole par 3 courses to ensure this historic facility would have the structural longevity to provide enjoyment for generations to come. This revitalization project not only brings aesthetic upgrades but also promises to elevate the challenges and delights that golfers seek. Situated just 3 miles South of downtown San Antonio and alongside the picturesque San Antonio River, this course has always been appreciated for its natural backdrop and fun course layout. The architect chosen for the redesign was Jeff Blume, ASGCA, who was inspired by the work of historic

golf course architects CB Macdonald (Chicago Golf Club, Shinnecock Hills), and Seth Raynor (Yale Golf Course). Blume was particularly captivated with many of their famous ‘Template’ hole designs which he has implemented into the updated layout. Jeff’s primary objective of the renovation was to modernize the course while preserving its unique character. This delicate balance between tradition and modernity was achieved by retaining the natural landscape’s integrity and integrating contemporary golfing standards and course-building techniques. The redesign incorporated state-of-the-art drainage systems, improved tee boxes, enhanced fairways, redesigned bunkering, and geometric-shaped greens. Blume was also the course architect who redesigned San Antonio’s Olmos Basin Golf Course in 2021. Sustainability was also a key consideration throughout the renovation process. Environmentally friendly practices were employed, such as the use of drought-

27

resistant grass, and the use of effluent (recycled) water in the ponds and irrigation systems. The Alamo City Golf Trail aimed to create a course that not only provides an exceptional golfing experience but also demonstrates responsible stewardship of the environment. Opening in late November, look for changes in elevation, added fairway mounds, strategic bunker placements, and re-imagined water hazards that were designed to challenge golfers of all skill levels. The course now offers a delightful blend of traditional elements and innovative features, ensuring an exciting and engaging round of golf. The Alamo City Golf Trail is committed to providing an outstanding golfing experience, making the renovated Riverside Golf Course a must-visit for any avid golfer. Wanna Bet? Golf Side Games

By Adam Grosch

I have recently been introduced to a great new game called The Train. I’ve played it a few times and the pressure that it adds is a lot of fun and different from other games. To get on The Train, you have to make 2 net pars in a row. Once you are on The Train, you receive one X for every net par you make, two X’s for net birdies and three X’s for net eagles. If you make a net bogey (or worse) you do not get any X’s for that hole. Here’s where it gets interesting: if you follow that net bogey (or worse) with another net bogey (or worse), you get de-railed and you lose all the X’s that you have accumulated up to that point. Now, you would need to make 2 net pars in a row again before you get back on The Train.

29

The Chip Game. I purchased a set of chips from www.VegasGolfGame.com. The set has a bunch of poker chips with positive and negative points like making a birdie or hitting the trees. The set that I got has 26 different chips and you pass the chips around to each other throughout the round. If you hit a tree on #1, but someone else hits a tree any other time during the round, you would give that chip to him/her. At the end of the round each person counts up how many positive chips they have and how many negative chips they have and you pay the difference between your number and

each other player’s number. One of the first times we played this, we watched one of our players get 6 negative chips on the last hole!! My favorite chip is called the Beer Chip. On each par 3, the furthest from the pin on the opening drive gets the BEER CHIP. If it is in your pocket when the Bev Cart comes you must buy a round for the group! The only way you get rid of it is having a better shot on the next Par 3. What happens if the Beer Cart comes by again before the next Par 3? Answer:You buy another round :( We also play that if you have the chip when we make the turn or when we finish, you are buying a round.

I’ve witnessed, and definitely been active on, some very cautious and stressful tee shots following bogies. Not to wish poorly on anyone, but it sure is a lot of fun to watch someone bogey #17 and then have to make par or better on #18 in order to keep a bunch of X’s. Another fun game that we’ve been playing in a lot of our rounds lately is TheTexasGolfInsider.com

(Re)Discover Galveston

Golf is among the plethora of option for fun in ‘Houston’s playground’

By Steve Habel, Contributing Writer

When people think of Galveston, the first thing that likely jumps into their minds is the island playground’s beaches and its quaint downtown area full of museums, art galleries, dining establishments, and historic mansions. Or they may even recognize the city as a port of call used to sail off on a cruise to the Caribbean.

Galveston Island boasts 32 Miles of Beach

TheTexasGolfInsider.com

Moody Gardens Golf Course

The island becomes the place to be as “Houston’s playground” on weekends, especially between Memorial Day and Labor Day. About 350,000 visitors pour over the Galveston Bay Bridge and into the city each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, drawn by its sun and sand, with plenty of things to do away from the water. While Galveston’s appeal is rooted in its grassy dunes and off-white sand, calm warm water, the Seawall, the Strand Historic District, and the growing roster of top lodging options and restaurants, the island’s golf courses are attractions to consider as well. They have played a big part in the area’s resurgence as Galveston rebounded from the effects of Hurricanes Ike, and, to a lesser extent and more recently, Harvey. The island’s two courses, the semiprivate Galveston Country Club on the west end and Moody Gardens Golf Course near the airport and mere blocks from the beach, throw up a stern gauntlet to visitors and residents, especially when the wind blows. And just off the island in Texas City, the newly renovated Bayou Golf Course is worth its weight in gold.

We asked Gean Leonard, a lifelong resident of Galveston County who served as sheriff here for two terms until retiring in 2008, for a list of places to head for fun in Galveston. He still lives in nearby League City, gets in four or five rounds of golf a week at the fun and challenging South Shore Harbour Golf Club and writes a weekly golf column for the Galveston Daily News. Here are Leonard’s tips for both the golfer and the non-golfer. His recommendation to visitors to Galveston County—whether first-time or a repeat—is to take the road less trav-

Schlitterbahn eled, or perhaps the road which once was the road less traveled: State Highway 146. From the east, getting there is easy either directly from I-10 or via the highway 99 toll road which bypasses Baytown. Highway 146 to the west hugs the bay coastline into Seabrook, crossing the bridge into Kemah, Clear Lake and marinas housing thousands of boats. To the east, Galveston Bay calls out to mariners of all ilk. Check your party into one of many small hotels and spend a few hours at the Kemah Boardwalk. Work up an appetite and choose from a dozen restaurants within a mile radius for a casual dinner with a gorgeous sunset included at no charge.

31

Strand Historic District

If you have an early tee time the next day, Skipper’s is just a long par 5 from the Boardwalk. It’s where the locals go for breakfast. If you want to sleep in and have an early lunch before golf, stop in at Stomp’s and choose from a variety of burgers – try the skinny onion rings and some sweet potato fries, but plan to share one order of each. Visit the famous Strand area, where you can shop ’til it hurts, take a tour of the 1894 Grand Opera House or just cool down at the beach, the pool, or at nearby Schlitterbahn. While many fine restaurants line Seawall Boulevard, my recommendation for a final evening meal would be a reservation at Rudy and Paco’s. Paco Vargas himself still selects the fresh fruit daily, and the atmosphere is pure, old Galveston. Plus, its where celebrities and dignitaries alike are known to have dinner. Tell Paco I sent you.

Galveston Country Club, the Birthplace of Texas Golf

And then there’s the golf. The oldest course in Galveston, and perhaps the state, is Galveston Country Club, located west of the seawall. Established in 1898, the club moved to its modern-day location in 1946 when Ralph Plummer designed the 18-hole track. The current course, renovated by Jacobsen/Hardy (Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy) and converted to wall-towall Paspalum turf in 2003, is a thrilling layout and plenty testy, even though the flattish par-72 layout extends just 6,512 yards from its back set of four tees. The members’ love of golf and their strong bonds of friendship imbued them

The Tremont House

TheTexasGolfInsider.com

with the desire and tenacity to rebuild and regroup time and again. It can be windy at Galveston CC, but that’s part of its appeal and personality. Those golfers staying at the fabulous Hotel Galvez, Tremont House or Harbor House hotels are allowed to play the course and pay a guest fee instead of the more-expensive charge for outside visitors, making a night or two at one of these sumptuous Mitchell Historic Properties especially enticing. Option one for golf is the Moody Gardens Golf Course, which continues to enjoy recognition as one of the best coastal tracks in the Texas and the United States. Also renovated by Jacobsen and Hardy, the 2005 redo kept the best historical features of the former layout while significantly improving certain holes and variety. The fairways curl around inlets and lakes edged with wispy grasses, and there are even some modest elevation changes, rare for a site so close to sea level. Stretching 6,816 yards from the back set of five tees – where it’s rated 72.6

Bayou Golf Course

with a 127 Slope – the par-72 Moody Gardens is designed to be player-friendly and a solid test, placing a premium on approach shots to some interesting pin locations. Moody Gardens GC borders Sydnor Bayou and, as such, you’ll find native areas, shorebird habitat and water impeding play on 17 holes. The course takes

Moody Gardens Aquarium

advantage of its natural palate of water, brush and sand. Its colorful landscaping, bay views and more than 500 palm trees swaying in the gentle Gulf Coast breezes make for a scenic and peaceful round. For those staying in Galveston and playing Moody Gardens GC, it would be silly to room anywhere else but the Moody Gardens Hotel and Conference Center on the other side of the Galveston airport. The facility is famed for its three landmark pyramids – one an aquarium, another indoor rainforest, and the third a museum and theater. Another option on a trip to or from the island is Bayou Golf Course, situated

just a short 14 miles outside of Galveston but still in the county on the outskirts of Texas City. Nestled right at the inlet to the Gulf of Mexico, this course offers a tropical climate feel year-round. Some of its best features just may be the blue skies and radiant palm trees that seem to light up and highlight each hole along the links. Renovated in 2016 by Houston-based architect Mike Nuzzo, the layout of this challenging championship course offers plenty of opportunity to shoot a good score. For more than 35 years, this course has welcomed golfers of all skill types and has never been better; it’s still the best option for budget-conscious golfers or those looking to escape the intensity of other competitive courses.

FEATURE STORY

Cabo’s Quivira Golf Course delivers memories along the Pacific By Steve Habel, Contributing Writer

Over the past three decades, Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos, which are set on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula of Mexico, have supplanted some of the country’s other destinations as “the” place to travel to for outstanding golf, sailing, fishing, and just plain fun by the bushelful. We recently made a return trip to the peerless Pueblo Bonita Pacifica Resort and its stunning Jack Nicklaus Signature course at Quivira Golf Club. Nicklaus has fashioned one of the most memorable and demanding golf courses you will ever play, with holes routed on a spectacular site marked by huge dunes, sheer rocky cliffs, and rolling foothills. TheTexasGolfInsider.com

Quivira Golf Club has more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Cabo and has garnered awards and accolades since its debut in 2014. The dazzling 7,085-yard layout was recently voted to Golf Digest’s elite roster of the “World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.” And there’s good news – ground will be broken for a second course at Quivira this fall, with a good portion of the new track being routed in the cactus forest behind the current course’s 16th hole. Quivira is like three courses in one.The round starts at Quivira Golf Club’s opulent open-air clubhouse, which is so close to the

beach that one might, if the wind is from the west, be sprinkled with spray from the pounding surf. Holes 1-5 are set in the valley that rests between the rocky hills and the massive dunes. Those five holes are ones that you can score on – and you better because the other two segments of the course are super-testing, especially when the breeze is howling. Take advantage of the 388-yard second hole, which features a 70-yard-wide fairway that ends at an arroyo that crosses about 100 yards from the huge, sloping putting surface. The third is a 210-yard par 3 with bunkers at the front right and back left and a massive green.

The fourth is a “drivable” 316-yard par 4 that plays down into a shallow valley and up to the green – it’s best to play this hole with an iron or hybrid off the tee to assure you don’t drive into the huge bunker that guards the middle of the fairway at about 250 yards. The fifth is a three-shot 616-yard par-5 on which the fairway is bordered by sand on each side. Nothing you see at Quivira early on prepares you for the next four holes. After a five-minute serpentine cart ride some 500 feet up the hill via a rock path and over a bridge, one must pause for a taco and margarita at the first of the course’s three comfort stops.Take a photo of the beach far below and even bring your camera into TheTexasGolfInsider.com

Clayton Meyers, PGA Assistant Professional at Escondido Golf & Lake Club, took the solo lead with an eagle on 18. Ben had this to say about his mindset after Round One: “When I saw that Clayton [Meyers] shot 8-under it was a bit of a change in mentality, so that was actually probably a good thing because it meant that I had to go out and really play. It changed my mindset and made me attack it.” This year’s Section Championship was hosted at BraeBurn Country Club in Houston,Texas. “I can’t speak highly enough about the course conditions,” said Willman. “It is a tough course, it was firm

The skill coming out of Texas is endless from the Professional level down to the Junior Golf level. The STPGA has had the fortunate chance of hosting the Drive, Chip and Putt Regional Qualifier for the second year in a row at the iconic Champions Golf Club and just like last year, the 2023 event did not disappoint.

Eight of them punched their tickets to Augusta National Golf Club, where they will compete in the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals on April 7, 2024. The stars came out to help with this event and make it all the more memorable for our Juniors. 1956 Masters Champion and World Golf Hall of Fame member Jackie Burke, 1995 PGA Championship Winner Steve Elkington, and successful content group, Good Good Golf, all came out to support our qualifiers and hand out some awards.

The wonderful ability of the Drive, Chip and Putt is bringing people from all over the world together. Among the eight qualifiers the distances from home varied tremendously with the closest being Waits Rodriguez, winner of the Boys 7-9 Division, who only had a 45-minute drive to be there. Waits won his division by posting a 28-point lead, which was the biggest margin of the day. For some, the travel was less than ideal. Jesse Linden, winner of the Boys 12-13 Division, had a 42-hour trip all the way from Australia. The long journey paid off for him and his father, Clint Linden, as they are now going to Augusta.

Hyo Joo Kim Goes Wire-to-Wire to Capture

The Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America

By Michael Abramowitz

Old American Golf Club

On a glorious October Sunday designed for picture-perfect postcards, rounds of golf and champagne showers, Hyo Joo Kim took what amounted to a victory lap Sunday as she went wire-to-wire to capture The Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America and the Kathy Whitworth Trophy. While things tightened up in the middle of Sunday’s final round, Kim never faced any serious challenge en route to a fourstroke victory over both Bianca Pagdanganan and Atthaya Thitikul. Kim was drenched with a champagne shower on the 18th green after she made par on the 72nd hole. With a 2-under par 69, she finished the tournament at 13-under 271 (64-68-70-69). Her signature shot was a lengthy birdie putt on No. 9 that had a Tiger Woods-esque hang on the lip of the hole. Kim walked away expecting to tap in, when suddenly the ball dropped for glory. She could only smile and shrug seeing her good fortune. LEADERBOARD Hyo Joo Kim

that changed with four straight rounds under par. At 8-under par 276 for the week, Sarah Kemp finished fourth. Lexi Thompson, who departs for Las Vegas for next week’s Shriners Children’s Open on the PGA Tour, finished fifth with a 7-under par 277 (71-65-71-70). “I’ve been working extremely hard on my game and to see it pay off in these last few weeks, starting at the Solheim Cup there, just to see the improvements, that’s all I’ve needed,” said Thompson. She will become just the seventh woman to play in the PGA TOUR, following in the footsteps of Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Shirley Spork, Annika Sorenstam, Michelle Wie West, Brittany Lincicome and Suzy Whaley. “My ball striking, I’ll definitely need my top game going into next week,” added Thompson. “Get that driver more in tune. Didn’t hit it too much on this golf course, but I’m going to need it I’m sure there.” Cheyene Knight, of Aledo,Texas, tied the course and tournament record with a final round 8-under par 63. It was an encore performance, as she did the exact same thing during last year’s final round. Six players have shot a 63 in the event. Knight finished in sixth place with a 6-under par 278 (7071-74-63), seven shots behind Kim. Katherine Muzi, of Newport Beach, California, who entered the field through the Monday qualifier, shot a 4-under par 68

Sunday to finish T7 with Leona Maguire and SoYeon Ryu, eight shots back at 5-under par 279 overall. Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Sarah Schmelzel and Frida Kinhult finished T10 at 4-under par 280. Lindsay Weaver-Wright, of nearby Prosper,Texas, holed out from 137 yards for eagle with the shot of the day on No. 18. She is due in December and will soon take maternity leave.Weaver-Wright finished T16 with a 2-under par 282. She recorded a 1-under par 70 for the day. Kim earns $270,000 with the win, pushing her season earnings over $2 million and $8.6 million for her LPGA career. Hae Ran Ryu and Brooke Henderson are the only other wire-to-wire winners this season on the LPGA Tour. “It was good to maintain the good score throughout the week, but that win at the end is what really matters,” said Kim.

Pawleys Plantation Reopens After Dramatic Greens, Bunkers Restoration Project Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club, a Jack Nicklaus design renowned for its beauty and challenge, reopened October 2 after a comprehensive greens and bunkers restoration project. Founders Group International (FGI), Pawleys’ parent company, contracted with Nicklaus Design Group and its Design Associate,Troy Vincent, to lead a project that has modernized one of the area’s most popular courses while maintaining the integrity of Nicklaus’ original work.

“Pawleys Plantation opened in the late 1980s, and it was time to look at the layout and re-imagine what it could be,” said Steve Mays, President of Founders Group International. “When you have a golf course that is associated with an icon like Jack Nicklaus, of course you want to incorporate his input and use the Nicklaus Design team to ensure the course continues to fulfill its potential going forward.” Pawleys closed May 22 and golfers were welcomed back to a layout that received a dramatic facelift just as Myrtle Beach enters its peak fall season. The seeds for the renovation of Pawleys were planted during a trip Nicklaus made to the acclaimed course in 2018 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its opening. The Golden Bear toured the layout, providing detailed notes

on how to best update a design that has long been among South Carolina’s most popular. At the heart of Nicklaus’ vision was a layout that was more playable for average golfers without diminishing the challenge for more skilled players. Over time, trees had encroached on the course, narrowing fairways corridors beyond the original intent, and the size of the greens’ complexes had shrunk dramatically. To create more room,Vincent and his team eliminated the sprawling bunkers that lined more than half of the layout’s holes, replacing them with ad-

ditional fairway space and native areas, and removed trees when necessary to create optimum conditions. “We followed Jack’s ideas from 2018,” said Vincent, who has worked alongside the golf legend for 15 years. “It was our intention to make the course more playable, to give players more options, and we have carried that out. I think everyone will be happy.” While there is more fairway to find, the challenge on and around the greens is more substantial as the number of pinnable areas significantly increased, placing greater demands on the short game.

“Working with the Nicklaus Group and Troy Vincent, who has done a fantastic job, has been a pleasure,” Mays said. “I believe we have brought the vision Jack Nicklaus outlined in 2018 to life. I can’t wait for everyone to come out and see the new Pawleys Plantation.” Highlights of the project include: • Every green complex and the surrounding fringe was stripped, tilled and restored to its original specifications, netting nearly 40,000 square feet of additional putting surface. • The new greens feature TifEagle Bermudagrass, an ultradwarf strain that has performed exceedingly well at other FGI layouts, including the Grande Dunes Resort Course and River Hills Golf Club. • The collar around every green was resurfaced with Tahoma 31, a hearty variety of bermudagrass that can withstand close mowing and is resistant to mutation. • The sprawling bunkers on holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12, 16 and 18 were

replaced by smaller fairway bunkers, native areas and expanded fairways, enhancing the course’s playability for mid to high handicappers without reducing the challenge for more skilled players. • In addition to the course work, Pawleys is undergoing a clubhouse renovation that will include the building of a new deck, offering stunning views of the course’s 18th hole, and the opening of a new restaurant that will cater to members and the public alike. The restaurant and deck are expected to open in the coming weeks.

Widely regarded as one of the prettiest courses in South Carolina, Pawleys features six back nine holes that play along a tidal marsh, a stretch highlighted by No. 13, a devilish par 3 that plays to a peninsula green surrounded by water and buffeted by winds off the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Founders Group International owns 21 Myrtle Beach golf courses, making it one of the largest management companies in the Southeast, and FGI has aggressively reinvested in its courses in recent years. FGI has undertaken significant capital

improvement projects at Grande Dunes Resort Course,TPC Myrtle Beach, Pine Lakes, Aberdeen Country Club, River Hills,Tradition Club and the PineHills and Palmetto courses at Myrtlewood. With additional capital improvement projects on the horizon, FGI is reinforcing its commitment to providing golfers with the best golf vacation experience possible.
