THEFROMEDITOR’S DESK

hen Roberto of Show Daily Magazine asked what separates the Coles Antique Show from the multitude of fabulous venues that grace Round Top Antiques Week, the first thing that comes to mind is the variety. While it is still one of the few proper antique shows in the traditional sense, it also has an eclectic and unexpected mix that will surprise even the most ardent collector. With the guidance of the next generation, James Coles, and the husband and wife team of Brittany & Chris Coelle, the show has managed to garner some heavy hitters in more modern genres of fine art & sculpture, antique and vintage jewelry, French & Italian furniture & accessories, and name-brand designer goods, creating an inspiring mix of the old, vintage, and contemporary. At 63,000 square feet, the main building is where you will find dealers like Crockett Artifacts, Carol Mitchell Antiques & Bronzes, Bruce Weekley Navajo Art, and Acanthus Antiques, representing everything from exceptional Navajo rugs & jewelry, European paintings and furniture, Black Forest, Majolica, Mid-Century jewelry, sculpture & art, religious artifacts, retablos, and Santos, Austrian & bronze animalier.

flatware and pattern matching service. Coles Antique Show also houses some of the best jewelry and designer accessories. Talia Jade Estate Jewelry sources fine estates, auctions, and private clients to bring you the names you love - Hermes, Chanel, David Webb, Lalaounis, Cartier... Need we say more? Representing the West Coast, Hub Gallery joined us last year for the first time and created quite a sensation with their elegant mix of avant-garde and antique sculpture, art, and furniture.

Tony Duquette said it best when he said, “Beauty, not luxury, is what I value”. In a modern world that seems all too often to extol the virtues of name brands and luxury. Beauty can be found in the heart of most antiques. So whether you’re looking for the simplest stoneware mixing bowl or the most exquisitely ormolu-mounted sideboard, come find something beautiful at the Coles Antique show, the “best-kept secret” in Round Top.

Lisa Stansbury is a talented antique vendor who was born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana. She has many fond memories of shopping with her mother, and the two of them spent countless weekends exploring the many shops on Magazine Street in New Orleans. Over the years, Lisa has developed a keen eye for collectibles. Her favorites include old dark Crazy Quilts and old industrial wooden molds.

One of the most unique items that she’s ever sold was a large “painting”; that she named “Stairway to Heaven.” It was created using paneling from a staircase wall, and it quickly became a beloved piece among her customers and friends. Lisa’s wares can be found at several different locations throughout Texas and Arkansas. They include ANTIQUES OFF THE SQUARE, which takes place twice a year at the SPJST Hall in Fayetteville, as well as Meyer’s Antiques in Jefferson, Texas, Main Street Market in Lindale, Texas, Gladewater Antique Mall in Gladewater, Texas, and Jenifer’s in Conway, Arkansas. When she’s at ANTIQUES OFF THE SQUARE, Lisa’s booth is always one of the most popular. Her attractive displays of antiques are easy to spot from afar, and they draw customers in almost immediately. Whether you’re looking for unique items like

One of the great things about ANTIQUES OFF THE SQUARE is that there are many other talented vendors and dealers selling their wares as well. For example, one of Lisa’s neighbors at the event is Eliyzabeth Pflasterer, who co-owns and operates HIGH COTTON COMPANY in Jackson, Tennessee with her mother, Doris Lawrence. Doris is a well-known collector and dealer, and her favorite items are Majolica pieces. She’s been selling her antiques for many years, and she got her start at Marburger Farms. However, she found a new home among the dealers showing in Fayetteville and joined the group about fifteen years ago. In addition to ANTIQUES OFF THE SQUARE, she sells her vintage treasures at events like Vintage Pickin’ in Fort Payne, Alabama. Another talented vendor at ANTIQUES OFF THE SQUARE is Ellen Wolpert, who runs LUCKY GIRL VINT.

Weavers In Tree Park

Alyssa and Mahmoud’s family weaving business, Magic Rugs at Tree Park, specializes in selling handwoven items made on a traditional Syrian loom. Mahmoud himself grew up in Aleppo, Syria, which is renowned for its weaving and textiles.

Aleppo was once a key stop on the Silk Road, and for centuries, it was a hub of trade and commerce between East and West. As a result, the city developed a rich tradition of weaving, which has been passed down from generation to generation. Mahmoud’s father, who is seventy-four years old, still weaves every day in Aleppo, maintaining the family’s long-standing tradition. Mahmoud himself has been involved in weaving for more than 40 years, and he has passed down the art to his own children and grandchildren.

Alyssa first met Mahmoud on a girls’ trip to Dubai. She had already learned how to weave on a small loom, and when she saw the big traditional loom in Mahmoud’s store, she was intrigued. Mahmoud demonstrated how to use it, and she returned every day of her trip to learn more about weaving. The couple made an instant connection, and Alyssa moved to Dubai a few weeks later. They got married at a mall

in Dubai in 2020 and lived there, as well as in Turkey, until they moved to the United States in March of 2023.

The Fall 2023 Show was the first time that Alyssa and Mahmoud sold their rugs at the Round Top Antique Fair. The event was a great success, and they decided to return for every show. They have also been doing markets around Texas and plan to travel to other states this year. They sell both antiques and items made by themselves and plan to have their items in boutiques and sell online on Etsy. Moreover, Alyssa and Mahmoud love to share the ancient art of weaving with others. During the day and into the evenings, they give weaving lessons, which can be a fun activity for a group of friends or a family outing.

The proceeds from their business help support Syrian refugees and families of victims of the Syrian Civil War. In addition to selling handwoven rugs and textiles, Alyssa and Mahmoud collect handmade items that celebrate the beauty of Arabic craftsmanship and heritage artwork. Their collection includes carpets, tapestries, pottery, and knives. They mix traditional Arabic weaving methods with modern styles, and they take pride in perpetuating an ancient craft that has been passed down through generations.

Chuck Delivers Once Again, at The Grainery

Excess II is a popular antique show held in Warrenton that attracts many antique dealers and collectors from all over. One of the businesses featured at the event is the Grainery, owned and operated by Chuck McNett.

When I arrived at the Grainery, I was immediately struck by the vast selection of items available. From repurposed building materials and furniture to unique props from TV shows and movies, Chuck’s business has something for everyone.

Chuck began his career as an antique dealer by selling farm primitives and baseball cards on eBay. As his business grew, he realized that there was a high demand for primitive farm items. Chuck expanded his business accordingly and eventually moved into an old grain building, where he began offering a wider range of items.

One of the factors that has contributed to his success is his ability to deliver his items worldwide. He has many Japanese clients who purchase entire containers of antiques and other unique items. In addition to providing large items like lumber and grain bins, Chuck also offers smaller items that can be easily shipped.

As Chuck showed me around his business, I was struck by the unique selection of items that he offers. His repurposed building materials, in particular, were a standout. I noticed that each item was well-displayed and individually marked for sale, making it easy for customers to browse and identify what they wanted to purchase.

In the end, I couldn’t resist buying one of Chuck’s weather vanes- a patina horse that was beautifully crafted and full of character. I was impressed by the helpfulness of Chuck’s employees, who held the weather vane for me until I was ready to purchase it.

Overall, my experience at the Grainery left me amazed by the quantity and quality of items available. If you are in the market for unique antique pieces or building materials, I highly recommend checking out the Grainery and getting to know Chuck and his friendly staff.

Big Bad Wolfs, at Excess II

Danny Wolfs is one of the most distinctive dealers in Excess II, with an incredible selection of antiques and unique items on offer at his booth, BIG BAD WOLFS.

Danny has always been interested in antiques, and he got into the business in the 1990s. Over the years, he has amassed an impressive collection of unique pieces, from vintage glassware to painted furniture and everything in between. When shoppers come to visit Danny at BIG BAD WOLFS, they’re in for a real treat.

He loves sharing his knowledge and expertise, and he’ll take the time to explain the history and background of each piece to anyone who is interested. For example, Danny’s best-selling glassware is Italian glass pieces, which are always in high demand. He also likes to showcase some more unusual pieces, such as Japanese “jam” bowls, which are beautiful and highly collectible.

One of the highlights of Danny’s booth is the incredible array of furniture on offer. His favorite pieces are the popular bluish/white painted ones, and he has a particular story that really brings these pieces to life. He brought a vintage piece with a painted front from Belgium to the show, which has seven layers of pigment and glue. As he explains, this piece is a perfect example of the traditional craftsmanship that is so important to him as a collector and dealer. Besides showcasing his collection, Danny also enjoys meeting people and sharing his passion for antiques. When he first came to Round Top, Texas, for the twice-yearly antique show, he was blown away by the warmth and friendliness of the people here. That’s why he keeps coming back, year after year. He and his wife stay in the area for a month during each show, and his son comes from Belgium to work the booth at Excess II during the next one. Danny’s store, BIG BAD WOLFS, is a destination for anyone who loves antiques and unique items.

Whether you’re looking for a stunning piece of glassware, a beautiful painted furniture, or just want to learn more about the history of the items on offer, Danny is always happy to chat. So, if you’re in the area during the next Round Top antique show, don’t hesitate to stop by and visit BIG BAD WOLFS. visit

The Home of the $10 Dollar Signs, In Bar-W

Danielle Behar and her husband, Ron, have been in the antique business for the 29 years of their marriage. Danielle became interested in antiques at a young age because of her family’s generational love for them, and she started selling at antique shows when she was just 16 years old.

When shopping at a vintage show, it’s pretty much impossible to miss Danielle’s tent. After all, it’s usually the one with the biggest crowd, drawn in by her famous $10 signs. Even though the signs are beautifully crafted and unique, Danielle believes in a low price point to get shoppers’ attention and draw them into her tent. Once inside, visitors are greeted with an incredible collection of antique furniture and wares. One of the most distinctive pieces that Danielle and Ron have ever sold was a Disney World paddle boat swan. This is an item most antique dealers can only dream of finding, let alone selling to a collector.

Other interesting items include 1940s pinball machines and a soda bar from the first Braum’s soda bar. Shoppers will also come across a vintage phone booth and a Coca-Cola collection, all of which are worth exploring. The most popular item at this year’s Bar W show, where Danielle sets up her tent on the first row on the left, Row A, is the AAA Root Beer sign. But the collection doesn’t end there. Shoppers are also drawn to a stunning array of 1950s diner furniture, vintage signs, and more.

Despite the success that Danielle and Ron have had in the antique business, they still enjoy the thrill of the hunt. They consider themselves to be antique hoarders, always on the lookout for their next big find. They’ve come a long way from their humble beginnings at small-time antique shows, but they still have the same passion for antiques that sparked their fascination all those years ago.

In many ways, Danielle and Ron’s business is a family affair. It’s not just because Danielle’s love for antiques was passed down through generations, but also because many of their most loyal customers are regulars. They love to see the familiar faces come back year after year, always excited to see what new treasures have been discovered and added to the collection.

Ultimately, Danielle and Ron love what they do and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

They’re known for their $10 signs, but their business is so much more than that. Their passion for antiques and unique treasures shines.

Jay and Mary Kasper at Cole’s Antique Show

Jay’s Emporium is a must-visit for anyone who loves antiques and unique collectibles. Located at Cole’s Antique Mall since 2012, this emporium is owned and operated by Jay and Mary Kasper from Shiner, Texas.

Jay and Mary have a passion for antiques and have been collecting treasures for many years. Jay started sharing his collections since he was 15 years old back in 1971, and Mary’s parents were antique dealers, so she grew up surrounded by antiques. Jay’s Emporium specializes in antique bottles, holiday collectibles (such as Christmas, Halloween, Easter, and the Fourth of July), sports cards, buttons, beer and soda items, and advertising ephemera. The emporium has thousands of items ranging from a few cents up to extremely rare items that require a co-signer. From vintage Christmas decorations to antique beer cans, there’s something for everyone at Jay’s Emporium.

The Kaspers attend approximately 20 shows a year, traveling to various states such as Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and more. They are always on the hunt for new and unique items to share with their customers. Jay’s also loves shopping at Brimfield, Massachusetts, which is the Round Top of Massachusetts.

One of the things that makes Jay’s Emporium unique is Jay’s reputation for buying entire inventories of estate or retiring vendors. These treasures are then passed on to his customers at a fraction of their original cost. He always ensures that his loyal followers get great

deals, and he loves to preserve history while doing so. Jay’s Emporium is located at spaces #50 and #51 at Cole’s Antique Mall, which is in the center of everything. The emporium has become a go-to spot for collectors who love discovering unique items. William W. Reed, who visited Jay’s Emporium, overheard a comment from a fellow collector who said, “Jay’s Emporium has thousands of items that I didn’t even know about but can’t seem to live without.”

Jay and Mary Kasper have created a haven for antique enthusiasts. Jay’s Emporium is a must-stop for anyone who is looking for something special to add to their collection, whether it’s an antique bottle or a Halloween decoration. Jay and Mary’s passion for antiques is infectious, and visitors are sure to leave the emporium with a renewed appreciation for the past and a newly acquired treasure in hand.

Bar-W “More Trinkets” from Mike and Joel

Mike Williams and Joel Chapman are two antique dealers who set up booths and sell their treasures at a variety of antique shows throughout the country. One of their favorite events is the Bar W Antique show, which they attend regularly. Mike, who is from South Carolina, has been a full-time antique collector and seller for 38 years, although he has been interested in antiques all his life. His grandmother was an antique dealer in Pennsylvania in the 1950s, and she is the one who instilled in him a love for antique items. Mike’s specialty is Akro Agate dishes, which he collects and sells. He also has an interest in Civil War items and furniture from the Federalist Period of the 1700s.

When I interviewed Mike at the Bar W Antique show, he was in the midst of setting up one of his many booths. He paused when I approached him, happy to take a break from his work and chat about his passion for antiques.

Joel, on the other hand, is from Quitman, Texas, and has been in the antique business since the 1990s. He finds joy in the thrill of the hunt and preserving the historical aspects of his purchases. His main motivation for participating in the antique business is to find and share unique and significant items with others.

During the interview, Joel mentioned an intriguing find he came across: a signed flag of Herman Goehring from

the train at the Eagle’s Nest in Germany. He purchased the flag from an elderly veteran and had documentation for all his purchases. He also bought a fire engine nozzle from the same era. Joel takes pride in educating people about the historical significance of his finds and enjoys sharing the stories behind them.

Both men agree that although antique selling is not the most lucrative business, it is still a passion that they enjoy pursuing. In fact, they attend shows such as the Longest Yard Sale in Tennessee, Springfield, Ohio, and Canton, Texas, not just for the money, but for the experience and meeting new people.

As I walked around the Bar W Antique Show, I noticed that both Mike and Joel’s booths were packed with customers, proving that their love for antiques is contagious. From Akro Agate dishes to Civil War items and historical memorabilia, these antique dealers continue to share their passion and preserve the stories of past generations.

Glorious pair of 1950s Tonala burnished vases own them. Call Robert 979 250 1494
