WHERE IS DECA GOING? LOU DIGIOIA, CAE | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, DECA INC.

The start of the year is all about looking ahead. You’re planning for a wonderful year with your chapter and preparing them for every opportunity they’ll encounter. As an organization, we’re also taking the opportunity to plan for the future. DECA has impacted the lives of many members in its 72-year history. Our hope is that we can continue to build on that success, while focusing on structures and strategies that will allow DECA to continue to be impactful for years to come. First and foremost, DECA is developing a new strategic plan to ensure that all processes, systems and resources align and are in service of our mission. A number of stakeholders from all areas of the organization will come together to share ideas and ultimately develop DECA’s new strategic plan. All chapter advisors will receive a survey to help with this effort. Your feedback is valuable and important in this process as you are the ones directly supporting DECA members on a daily basis. With students at the center of our organization, their safety is always our priority. We want to do everything we can to ensure that our members remain safe while still experiencing the exciting opportunities DECA provides, like competing and traveling. As the adults who most frequently interact with our members, we need your help in this effort. There is no question that DECA has a distinguished and successful history. Now, we want to make sure we are putting DECA in a position to have longevity and be successful long-term. One of the first steps is building the strongest team possible, beginning with a leadership team equipped with the knowledge and expertise to direct and manage their respective departments efficiently and effectively. This team includes some familiar faces who have served on DECA staff for many years, Christopher Young, CAE (Chief Meetings Officer) and Frank Peterson (Chief Communications and Marketing Officer), as well as some new additions who are bringing a new perspective and a great amount of knowledge in their respective fields, Megan Balkovic (Chief Development Officer) and Dr. Paul Surgenor (Chief Education Officer). With this new team in place, DECA will be #ReadyForIt!

COMPETITIVE EVENTS

2018-2019 COMPETITIVE EVENT CHANGES At the end of the 2017-2018 school year, DECA announced changes to DECA’s Competitive Events Program for the 2018-2019 school year. Now that the school year has begun, here are some important highlights regarding those changes, as well as answers to frequently asked questions regarding written events. Please consult the DECA Guide for complete details, including page 39 for a summary of the updates. •

Page counts are now 10 pages and 20 pages. Previous 30-page competitive events are now capped at 20 pages. Previous 5- and 11-page competitive events are now capped at 10 pages.

Written entries no longer have to be double spaced. However, written events must be printed single-sided.

The Marketing Representative Events are now the Integrated Marketing Campaign Events with new guidelines.

Is there a limit to the number of items that can be brought in to the presentation of a written event? The bulleted list of allowed items was deleted. Now, participants can bring in visual aids that can be easily hand carried to the presentation by the participants themselves. Poster boards and display boards will not be measured at the International Career Development Conference this year. Please note that wheeled carts, moving straps or similar items may not be used to bring visuals into the area. Can charts and graphs be handwritten? No. There should be nothing handwritten in the written entry. Does the written entry have to be double spaced? No. Written entries no longer have to be double spaced, but they still can be double spaced as long as the entry doesn’t exceed the maximum number of pages allowed. For the Integrated Marketing Campaign, it says that a real product, service or event must be used. What does that mean? This means that the product, service or event must be real. For example, participants should not be creating an integrated marketing campaign for a business that doesn’t exist. However, the campaign itself doesn’t have to be implemented.

For the Integrated Marketing Campaign, how do I best help my students choose which event to enter? These events are designed to be marketing campaigns with a narrower focus. Encourage your members to identify the core of the marketing campaign and let that guide the category. For example, if a golf pro shop is developing a campaign around products in the pro shop, then the campaign would likely fit under the product category. If the golf pro shop is developing a campaign around golfing lessons, then the campaign would likely fit under the service category. If the golf pro shop developing a campaign for a golf tournament, then the campaign would likely fit under the event category.
