GREETINGS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR We challenged you to continue your success and #beDECAepic all this year, and once again you have taken DECA to new heights. Membership continues to break records, participation in the DECA Idea Challenge soared, certifications in DECA’s School-based Enterprises rose and #beDECAepic trended throughout the year. PAUL A. WARDINSKI

@decapaw

We are excited to welcome nearly 18,000 epic DECA members to Music City USA. Nashville is the perfect location for our conference because it values hospitality, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing and management as much as DECA does. Like DECA’s own growth over the past years, Nashville has grown in popularity. With an increase in number of visitors for over 60 months straight, it is one of the premiere destination cities in the country. So much has changed since our last visit twelve years ago: a new convention center (The Music City Center), new hotels, a new minor league baseball stadium for the Nashville Sounds, and its own TV show on ABC. Just as exciting is how many classics remain: The Grand Ole Opry, the General Jackson, the Country Music Hall of Fame and many of the iconic restaurants in the downtown area. There is so much to do, and if you love live music, you will find all types everywhere, at all hours of the day. The DECA staff works hard to continually improve our programs and opportunities for all DECA members. DECA adjusts its competitive events to be sure members are using the current terminology and formats in business. You saw changes in the entrepreneurship events with the lean business model canvas. DECA strives to be at the forefront of industry trends as we continue to provide our members real world opportunities and authentic assessment.

2

New talents that grow to become superstars are discovered in Nashville every year – now it is your turn to show your own epic talents and become discovered! You can say it all started in Nashville at the #DECAICDC! Congratulations on your path to get here and good luck!

GREETINGS FROM YOUR EXECUTIVE OFFICERS These last few months, you’ve posted, Instagrammed and tweeted your excitement for the 2016 International Career Development Conference (ICDC). The anticipation that has built up as you’ve earned your way to attend #DECAICDC has been incredible! As all of our competitors and emerging leaders come together, there is no doubt this will be the most EPIC conference of the year. When you arrived in Nashville, you took a huge step towards your success. There’s no better place to prepare to be an EPIC leader than in a city that is gaining national and global acclaim as a hot tourism destination. Nashville is undoubtedly using its marketing, hospitality, finance, entrepreneurship and management prowess to leverage the city for success. As you spend your time in Music City, utilize all the opportunities available to you by networking with competitive events judges, industry leaders, entrepreneurs and DECA members from around the globe. This is your chance to reach out, make connections and meet new people. Stay engaged in the buzz that surrounds Nashville and ICDC using #DECAICDC on Twitter and Instagram, and follow DECA on both platforms @DECAInc. Use every opportunity as a learning experience, for these next few days are full of activities that can only enhance your leadership skills and DECA experience! ADVISOR ACADEMY

DECA’s Advisor Academy is designed to help DECA advisors with fewer than six years of experience understand their various roles and responsibilities, enhance their teaching using DECA, and develop innovative ideas. DECA advisors also learn how DECA’s Comprehensive Learning Program integrates into classroom instruction, applies learning, connects to business and promotes competition.

SUNDAY, APRIL 24

MONDAY, APRIL 25

WELCOME & INTRODUCTIONS

DIAMOND FUNDRAISING

n Michelle Walker, DECA Inc.

9:00 AM

DECA CONNECTS TO THE CLASSROOM Create relevance in the educational process by learning how to demonstrate DECA’s connection to key educational initiatives such as Career Clusters, Common Core Standards and 21st Century Skills.

10:00 AM

CHAPTER STRATEGY Learn the core elements of a successful DECA chapter strategy, including mission-based chapter officer positions, DECA goals and a chapter program of leadership.

11:00 AM

USING DECA’S COMPETITIVE EVENTS IN THE CLASSROOM Begin to understand how to use DECA’s industry-validated competitive events as an integral part of the classroom curriculum. All events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism.

LUNCH (on your own)

1:00 PM

COMPETITIVE EVENTS SUPER SUCCESS DECA advisors often wonder how to create a comprehensive system to help members succeed in DECA’s Competitive Events Program. This session is designed to lay the groundwork for you to create a customized system to help your chapter members succeed in competitive events. At the conclusion of this session, you’ll leave with the tools necessary to formulate your chapter’s plan.

2:00 PM

DECA GOES LEAN IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP Learn how and why DECA is aligning entrepreneurship competitive events with the lean startup business model. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of the lean startup business model and canvas, outlines of the entrepreneurship competitive events, and have the opportunity to begin planning how to integrate the entrepreneurship events and activities into their programs and courses.

208 9:00 AM

Just like businesses have financial growth plans, DECA chapters also need to create financial plans that support forecasted expenses, identify possible revenue sources, and diversify access to financial resources. This module helps DECA advisors and chapter leaders develop a diversified fundraising model to support the chapter’s annual activities.

10:00 AM

CHAPTER CAMPAIGNS Learn about the five campaigns, brainstorm activities to meet the goals, and leave with three ready-to-go classroom activities. DECA’s five chapter recognition programs are designed to help promote your program and engage your chapter’s members.

11:00 AM

ADVOCACY Need to garner deeper support for DECA learning activities from your administration? This session helps administrators understand how DECA’s Comprehensive Learning Program aligns with education initiatives and enriches the student learning environment. Packed with resources to share with prospective administrators such as the Let’s Talk About DECA video, presentation slideshow and promotional flyer, this content allows you to have conversations with existing and potential stakeholders.

CONFERENCE PROFESSIONALISM DRESS CODE

CODE OF CONDUCT

Professional appearance is an important aspect of the overall preparation of DECA members for the business world. To that end, DECA supports a dress code for its career-based functions that exemplifies the highest standards of professionalism while being non-discriminatory between males and females.

The Board of Directors for DECA Inc. requires each delegate attending the International Career Development Conference to read and complete the ATTENDANCE PERMISSION FORM and return to the CHARTERED ASSOCIATION DECA advisor as partial completion of attendance requirements.

DECA’s board of directors has developed the following official dress standards for the International Career Development Conference. Students, advisors and chaperones must follow the dress code.

1.

The term “delegate” shall mean any DECA member, including advisors, attending conferences (high school, collegiate, alumni, professional).

2.

There shall be no defacing of public property. Any damage to any property or furnishing in the hotel rooms or building must be paid for by the individual or chapter responsible.

3.

Delegates must wear identification badges at all times.

4.

Delegates shall refrain from using inappropriate or profane language at all times.

For a more polished, professional appearance, it is recommended that attendees wear appropriate hosiery/socks.

5.

Delegates shall refrain from written, verbal, physical or electronic activities that may lead to harassment, hazing, bullying or damaging property.

AN OFFICIAL DECA BLAZER IS REQUIRED TO RECEIVE RECOGNITION OR AN AWARD ON STAGE.

6.

The use of any harassment against anyone on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, ancestry, age, gender, sexual orientation or disability is prohibited.

WHEN APPEARING BEFORE JUDGES

Competitors must wear an official DECA blazer during interaction with the judges. While official DECA blazers are not required during briefing and testing, professional business dress is required. Professional dress should also be worn to all conference sessions including workshops and special meal functions such as luncheons.

7.

Delegates shall respect the rights and safety of other hotel guests.

FEMALES:

Official DECA blazer with dress skirt or dress slacks and a dress blouse or official blazer with a dress; dress shoes

8.

Delegates shall not possess alcoholic beverages, narcotics or weapons in any form at any time under any circumstances.

MALES:

9.

Delegates shall refrain from gambling—playing cards, dice or games of chance for money or other things of value.

10.

Use of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes by delegates is prohibited at all DECA functions.

11.

Delegates must adhere to the dress code at all times.

12.

Delegates must not dress or behave in a manner than can be interpreted as sexually explicit.

13.

Students shall keep their adult advisors informed of their activities and whereabouts at all times.

14.

No delegate shall leave the hotel (except for authorized events) unless permission has been received from chapter and chartered association advisors.

15.

Delegates should be prompt and prepared for all activities.

16.

Delegates should be financially prepared for all activities.

17.

Delegates are required to attend all sessions and activities assigned including workshops, competitive events, committee meetings, etc., for which they are registered unless engaged in some specific assignment scheduled at the same time.

18.

Delegates will spend nights at their assigned hotel and in their assigned room. No guests allowed during curfew hours. Delegates will be quiet at curfew.

19.

Curfew will be enforced. Curfew means the delegate will be in his/ her assigned room.

20.

Chartered associations will be responsible for delegates’ conduct.

21.

Tasteful casual wear will be accepted during specific social functions as designated during orientation.

22.

Delegates ignoring or violating any of the above rules will subject their entire delegation to being unseated and their candidates or competitive events participants to being disqualified. Individual delegates may be sent home immediately at their own expense.

CHAIRMAN’S AWARD KENNETH F. DISAIA | RHODE ISLAND Ken DiSaia’s connection to DECA includes that of student, chapter advisor, chartered association advisor, DECA Inc. board member and National Advisory Board (NAB) member and NAB Executive Committee. He began his relationship with DECA Inc. as a student, highlighted by his 1985-86 service as the North Atlantic Region Vice President for Delta Epsilon Chi and continued his association by serving as the chapter advisor at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. While in the role of chapter advisor, Ken was appointed to Delta Epsilon Chi’s Postsecondary Program Advisory Council where he served for two years, including one year as chair. Working tirelessly on behalf of the DECA organization and its many students, his efforts include recruiting over 5,000 students for membership in JWU’s Collegiate DECA chapters. As an accomplished executive, Ken DiSaia embodies the attributes and values that DECA is founded upon. In his role as NAB chair, Ken guided the NAB through transformational and operational changes to its leadership and engagement model, implementing a plan of work that supported DECA’s strategic goals. His leadership conveyed competence, innovation by strategically approaching decision making and planning with creativity and forward thinking and teamwork. In his current position as Rhode Island’s Collegiate DECA chartered association advisor, Ken provides mentoring and guidance for students not only from JWU, but from six colleges and universities in the state. In addition, Ken has recruited many faculty and staff members to serve as mentors, advisors and coaches for student competitions. DiSaia is a 2009 recipient of the Honorary Life Membership Award, DECA’s highest award. DECA commends Ken DiSaia for his service as NAB chair. Congratulations to Kenneth DiSaia on this much deserved recognition as recipient of the Chairman’s Award.
