GIVING KUDOS TO THE CREATIVES WITH OUR CONTENDERS EMMY NOMINEES EVENT

Celebrating television might feel like a wasted effort right now, especially since 11,500 writers and 160,000 actors are walking the picket line with no end to the strike in sight. But it would be unfair to completely overlook the extraordinary work of so many Emmy-worthy creatives, even if the ongoing dispute between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers prevents writers and actors from talking about the very series that got them a ticket to the 75th Annual ceremony in the first place. Sadly,

everyone will have to wait until January of 2024 to see who will accept their just rewards. But this year’s contenders will certainly make it worth the wait.

Talk of the streamers may be dominating the picket lines, but it’s the cable networks like HBO, Showtime, AMC and FX that racked up the nominations this year. Chief among them are watercooler hits Succession and House of the Dragon —both of which are participating in our Contenders event this year. HOTD director of photography

Catherine Goldschmidt, along with production designer Jim Clay and visual effects supervisor Angus Bickerton will join us to discuss how the Game of Thrones prequel managed to pull off the unimaginable—not only expanding on the original world, but making us focus purely on the Targaryens (that family tree is just too crazy to ignore).

And on team Succession we have Director/EP Mark Mylod and Composer Nicholas Britell—who we may or may not ask whether they thought Jeremy Strong’s Kendall

should have jumped into the Hudson at series’ end.

If there’s one streamer that continues to threaten HBO’s once dominance at the Emmys, it’s Apple TV+, which has four contenders that are but assured trophies come January. Look for our panels on Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie , featuring editor Michael Harte, Black Bird , with cinematographer Natalie Kingston, Schmigadoon! with choreographer Christopher Gattelli and Ted Lasso , with songwriter/ composer Tom Howe and songwriter/vocalist Sam Ryder.

If comedies and dramas aren’t your bag, we are pleased to welcome representatives from three other unscripted shows that are worth your while— The Territory documentary from National Geographic Documentary Films, about Brazil’s deforestation; RuPaul’s Drag Race on MTV and the culinary adventure Taste

Lastly, no Contenders event is complete without at least one dispatch from Studio 8H in 30 Rockefeller Plaza. You guessed it— Saturday Night Live will be a presence on our special day, as we host director Liz Patrick and music director Lenny Pickett for a conversation about one of TV’s longest-running programs. Fingers crossed that we’ll be back in front of our tellies soon to enjoy a new original episode of SNL . Boy, are we overdue for a good laugh. ★

Joe oversees Deadline’s awards coverage, including its dedicated print magazine for the Oscar and Emmy seasons, AwardsLine. He also edits Deadline’s special “Disruptors” edition for the Cannes Film Festival and serves as the emcee for its Contenders events. He has been aboard since 2012. Prior to joining, his work regularly appeared in his native U.K.—for outlets including The Sunday Times and The Guardian—and around the world. He has also worked extensively in film and television, producing EPK and production notes and working as a unit publicist. He is a member of BAFTA and has sat on multiple juries for the BAFTA Film Awards.

Mike joined Deadline in 2010 after working at Variety for 20 years as a reporter, writer and columnist. He was not only nationally recognized as Variety’s premiere film reporter but also for his “Dish” and “The Buzz” columns. Mike is known for his industry relationships and his ability to break news wherever it happens, including on the ground at festivals like Sundance, Cannes and Toronto. He also is an author: Doubleday published his book about The Three Stooges, From Amalgamated Morons to American Icons , which ABC turned into a telepic executive produced by Mel Gibson. One of Mike’s early jobs in journalism was editor of the well-known Media Industry Newsletter (MIN). He then joined New York Newsday as a columnist, reviewer and entertainment writer. During his career, he has written for numerous magazines including Playboy, Details, TV Guide and Esquire.

PETE HAMMOND

AWARDS COLUMNIST/CHIEF FILM CRITIC

Pete, widely considered to be one of the pre-eminent awards analysts for both film and television, has for the past 11 years been Deadline’s Awards Columnist covering what is seemingly now the year-round Oscar and Emmy seasons. He is also Deadline’s Chief Film Critic, having previously reviewed films for MovieLine, Boxoffice magazine, Backstage, Hollywood.com and Maxim, as well as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide for which he was a contributing editor. In addition to writing, Pete is also host of both the KCET Cinema Series and the weekly KCET television series, Must See Movies . He previously held producing positions at Entertainment Tonight , Extra , Access Hollywood , The Arsenio Hall Show , The Martin Short Show and AMC Networks and is the recipient of five Emmy nominations for writing. Pete is only the second journalist to have received the Publicists Guild of America’s Press Award twice, in 1996 and 2013.

APPLE TV+ Black Bird

Based on a true story, Black Bird focuses on the arrest of charismatic drug dealer Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton). Instead of serving his 10-year prison sentence, the FBI offers Jimmy the chance to walk free if he can get alleged serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) to confess and admit where he buried his victims. The show also features the late Ray Liotta and Sepideh Moafi.

Schimigadoon!

The musical comedy follows the story of Melissa Gimble (Cecily Strong) and Josh Skinner (Keegan-Michael Key), an ordinary couple hoping to rekindle their passion who accidentally stumble into a magical town reminiscent of the Golden Age of Hollywood musicals. In Season 2, they end up in the city of Schmicago, which pays homage to musicals from the ’60s and ’70s.

Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie

Directed by Davis Guggenheim, this documentary centers

on actor Michael J. Fox as he reflects on what’s kept him active and fighting decades after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The movie also incorporates archival and scripted elements to recount Fox’s story in his own words.

Ted Lasso

This sports comedy follows the life of small-time college football coach Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) as he moves from Kansas to London to manage a struggling professional soccer team, despite having no experience in coaching English football. Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Juno Temple and Nick Mohammed also star.

FX Dear Mama

Directed by Allen Hughes, Dear Mama examines the personal relationship between famed rapper Tupac Shakur and his mother Afeni Shakur. The docuseries also dives into Afeni Shakur’s life as a political activist and member of the Black

Panther party. The five-part series uses interviews, archival and never seen before video footage and unheard audio.

HULU Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi

This Hulu docuseries follows activist-actress Padma

Lakshmi as she explores the intertwining history of American Cuisine influenced by the nation’s immigrant population. Lakshmi travels across the U.S. to share meals with different immigrant groups and uncover how their histories and cultures have shaped what American food is today.

PEACOCK The Traitors

Based on the popular Dutch series of the same name, The Traitors is a psychological murder mystery game full of treachery and deceit. Throughout the competition, 20 contestants come together to complete a series of challenges with the objective of earning a large cash prize.

MAX House of the Dragon

Based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, the prequel series, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, depicts the fight for the Iron Throne during the early reign of House Targaryen. Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy and Rhys Ifans also star.

Succession

The Roy family business drama comes to a head in the final season of Succession. Season 4 picks up as the sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech mogul Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) looms. The potential sale of the company causes strife between patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his scheming children Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Siobhan (Sarah Snook).

MTV RuPaul’s Drag Race

This long-running reality TV show centers around a group of talented drag queens that complete in a variety of fashion design challenges. Hosted by drag icon RuPaul, the queens’ aim to win a large cash prize along with the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTARY FILMS The Territory

The Oscar-shortlisted documentary The Territory, directed by Alex Pritz, shows how Bitaté and members of his Indigenous tribe, the Uru-EuWau-Wau, are attempting to fend off loggers, miners and squatters devouring huge tracts of the Amazon. Among their only means of defense is media attention to their plight. Without it, their territory will continue to disappear.

NBC SNL

For the last four decades and counting, the award-winning New York sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live invites celebrity hosts to join the ensemble cast to perform a variety of skits. The comedy sketches range from digital shorts, satirical news and hot button issues within the popculture zeitgeist.

PRIME VIDEO Daisy Jones & The Six

Based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 novel of the same name, this miniseries follows the rise and fall of a fictional rock band in the ’70s. Twenty years after the band splits up, the members participate in a documentary about their history. Led by Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy (Sam Claflin), the story is told through interviews, footage of concerts and recording sessions.
