During an annual physical, Brynlee’s pediatrician noticed a curve in her spine and referred her to the pediatric orthopaedic spine specialists at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Our experts diagnosed Brynlee with scoliosis and explained possible treatments.

Monroe Carell is the only nationally ranked program in Tennessee combining fellowshiptrained pediatric orthopaedic spine surgery and pediatric anesthesia specialists. Together with Brynlee and her family, they chose spinal surgery as the best way to meet her goals. Four days after surgery, Brynlee was home again and six inches taller.

Because our team at Monroe Carell listened to Brynlee and her mom, Brooke, they felt included in decision making and well informed of their options.

Today, she is back to playing basketball as a starter on her team, enjoying her pets and living life as any preteen should. Follow @vumcchildren on Instagram for more inspiring stories like Brynlee’s.

The truth, though, is that everybody has quirks. Everyone is “weird” in their own way. The idea that there’s some normative standard for interests, personalities, behaviors and habits is, frankly, a load of hogwash. How many people squelch their true passions because they don’t fit what society expects of them? How many people lose parts of themselves in the quest to “fit in” with some arbitrary crowd? What if we, as parents, encouraged our kids to stand out in a crowd, be different from their peers and fight for the underdog? What if we taught them to think independently, work out their differences on their own and lead with courage? We might have more kids wearing Superman capes in Walmart, but we’d also have more leaders, less followers and a better world as a whole.

nashvilleparent.com september 2022 11 DADBEAT

One of the hallmarks of a great leader is their ability to not let others dictate their behavior. Yet we condition our kids from the time they’re young to let a perception of social norms and fear of what other people think dictate what they say, do, wear, think or feel.

nyone who claims not to eavesdrop on other people’s parenting is lying. Hearing a kid yell, “Don’t let her take me!” as they are being taken out of church is always funny when you are not the one doing the carrying.ButI’ve noticed an interesting phenomenon in parenting lately. It all started in a Walmart parking lot (as most great parenting stories do).

Embrace Your Kid’s Weirdness

A little boy was standing in the door of his mother’s SUV crying. The reason? Mom wouldn’t let him wear his Superman cape into the store. She looked frazzled as she tried to calm him down, remove the cape and wrestle him into the cart at the same time. She was also doing the furtive loud-whisper thing every parent does in a desperate attempt to not be overheard.“Everyone will think you’re weird,” I couldn’t help but hear her say. Now, I don’t know this woman’s story. I don’t know if she had already fought the Superman cape battle 10,000 times that day and had finally reached her limit. What I do know is it made me think of the times I’ve tried to stop my own kid from doing something out of embarrassment.

My toddler is currently experiencing speech delay. He’s smart as a whip, just a little behind formulating words/sentences. His current obsession is ketchup and mustard — which means everything in the world that is red and yellow is either “ketchup and mustard” or “not ketchup and not mustard.” At first, it was hilarious and adorable. But eventually, it’s become more quirky than cute, more odd than adorable. As parents, it’s easy to let quirky behaviors worry us, but why? Why must we constantly feel the need to adjust or edit instead of just letting them be?

by Michael W. Aldrich A

In other words, embrace your kid’s weirdness. You may just be surprised by where it takes them.

“My son had his done this year at 8 years old. It wasn’t a decision we let him take lightly. I made him wait about five months before we did it. My only regret was doing it so close to soccer season and not realizing we would have to take it out every game. We just had the one ear done for now at Evil Twins (they have a piercing studio for kids). If he asked for his second, we’d do it in a heartbeat. The only kids that even asked about it wanted to know why he didn’t have both ears done.”

Lacie Fish

QUESTION:

Katie Long “No, but only because I don’t think at 6 he can care for it properly. Most boys that age will mess with it with dirty hands and that can lead to infection. Maybe tell him that you need a year or two to see how responsible he is. Then you can re-visit if he still wants to.”

“Yes. My daughter is 3 and I won’t get hers done until she tells me she wants them done.

Jane Mobley Parker

“My 6-year-old son really wants his ears pierced. What are your thoughts on it? If your son wanted his pierced, would you let him at this age?”

Nicole Case Sutton

Courtney Wilson “Personally, I would wait until he’s older and better understand the care required to take care of a new piercing so he can handle that. I suggest late middle or high school. It’s rare for younger children to understand a decision like creating a permanent hole in their ear and it will give you time to see if it’s really something they want or if it’s a phase. Ultimately, it’s your decision as it is your child.”

“My son too! I didn’t mind if he did, but we weighed out the pro and cons about it; far as if he changes his mind about the piercing a year later he has to deal with scar tissue and how sweat from his activities would affect the piercing and other things. He decided that going through all that versus looks isn’t worth it.”

“If he plays sports, check the rules to make sure they allow jewelry. I know my son’s soccer team allowed no jewelry, period, and he can’t wear them in martial arts, either. He would need that six-to-eight weeks period where he has to leave them in. We personally wouldn’t allow it, but that’s for each family to determine what’s right for them and if their child — boy or girl — is mature enough to care for it.”

“I think if you would let your 6year-old daughter do it, it should be the same for your 6-year-old son.”

“I don’t think gender matters in this situation at all. That being said, my daughter got hers done at 8 and after they healed completely, somehow the back got imbedded inside her ear lobe, so it had to removed by a doctor, and they then had to close up. That’s rare, but infection and ripped lobes aren’t as rare, so I think it’s more about the maturity of the child and readiness to care for the piercing.”

At 6, I believe they are capable of making a decision like this and if they don’t like it, they can just stop wearing them. If you go with yes, take them to a real piercer! Do not let them get pierced with a gun in the mall.”

Donna Dority

“I wouldn’t leave the decision up to him. And personally, 6 is a little too young for that. But that’s just my opinion. Everyone parents differently.”

Developed in the late 1800s by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, the Montessori method originally used educational approaches to help children with emotional and mental disabilities. Today, it is a widely accepted instructional system that aims to give any child more ownership of their learning and environment.

And learning how to do this with your child can begin as early on as infancy. Here’s how to get started: 1. Create a development-centered nursery Montessori says that children 3 and younger have an “unconscious, absorbent mind.” As such, their environment becomes a part of who they are. Because of the enormous impact of a baby’s environment, you can design a room for them that isn’t just cute, but supports them developmentally, too. Montessori nurseries are orderly and aesthetically pleasing, Davies says.

INDEPENDENTBABY?

MONTESSORI WITH BABY

“In traditional education, the teacher stands in the front and leads the class,” says Simone Davies, a Montessori teacher and author of The Montessori Toddler (Dutton; 2019). “In a child-led approach, we let them learn through play and their interests,” she adds.

Many families don’t become aware of Montessori until their kids are school-aged, but you can use the beneficial philosophy at home with your baby starting from birth. While we don’t generally think of babies as independent, there are ways that you can support theseautonomydevelopingtheirastheygrow, andoneofisprovidingindependentplaytime.

nashvilleparent.com18 september 2022 Babies by Charlotte Wershan In her book, Thirty Million Words: Building a Child’s Brain (Dutton; 2015), author Dana Suskind shows the profound power of talking to infants from birth, sharing a methodology that makes parents their baby’s own neuro-developer. Ongoing engagement with your baby is the first healthy step towards a strong developmentalAccordingoutcome. to unarguable research, the first three years of a child’s life are the most important in terms of development, so Suskind’s work plays right into the case for Montessori at home from the start since it requires a good deal of talking.

• Use real words and details: Using rich language with your baby from birth is a great gift to your child. This is the time when they are listening closely, absorbing all of the language around them, so use real words for things rather than simplified versions.

2. Communicate thoughtfully Here’s where Suskind’s work related to talking a lot merges with Montessori. From birth, infants absorb language. The way you communicate with your infant can have a real impact on their language development, as well as how they perceive themselves. Here’s how to communicate using Montessori:

• Tell Baby what you’re doing: Even if it seems too early for baby to understand you, tell them what you’re doing, such as when you’re about to change their diaper and talk about each step. Tell them they might be hungry and you’re going to see if they want some milk. We don’t know exactly when babies begin understanding what we’re saying, but your baby will feel the respect you’re showing them by including them in your actions.

• Ask permission: With Montessori, always ask permission before picking up your baby. Approach baby from the front so that they can see you, rather than picking them up from behind. You might say, “May I pick you up to bring you to your bed?” If you ask questions and wait for a response, you may be surprised at how soon your baby will respond in some way.

Charlotte Wershan is a freelance writer who raised her three kids using Montessori.

They are calm, with plenty of open space and, ideally, natural light. The sleeping area and play area are done a little differently. Montessori families opt for a floor bed rather than a crib — this can be as simple as a low, firm mattress on the floor, although bed frames for floor beds are also available. This allows Baby to see the whole room, with an unobstructed view, and gives them the ability to get in and out of bed on their own once they start to crawl.Ababy’s play space can simply be a rug or mat on the floor. A wall mirror can provide a mesmerizing touch since young children like to see their reflections. A black and white mobile is generally hung above Baby’s play area, progressing to different colors as Baby gets Montessoriolder.nurseries use sturdy low shelving to store baby’s toys so Baby can see them and eventually learn to crawl over and select a toy. Putting things within a child’s reach is one of the ways that Montessori encourages independence, from birth all the way through school.

There is much more to incorporating Montessori at home with your baby — or toddler — including allowing freedom of movement and supporting independent play. Read more online at nashvilleparent.com by searching “Montessori for Babies,” and discover the methodology that hundreds of thousands of parents around the world swear by for their children.

Do Whatever it Takes to Grow a Reader

Reading Joy

Some books to consider are librarian Kathleen Odean’s volumes, Great Books For Boys; Great Books For Girls; and Great Books About Things Kids Love, all published by Ballantine. Another classic guide for families nurturing readers is The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease (Penguin/ Putnam), which not only lists titles for every age group and every occasion, but gives good advice on how to emphasize reading within the family.Weall know that reading with toddlers changes dramatically when parents introduce iPads and other devices. Suddenly your agreeable tot wants only that and snuggling up on Mom’s or Dad’s lap for a story becomes secondary. Reading growth becomes hindered here. That’s why parents are scooping up screen-free readers for the pintsized set. Not only do they tune up a young child’s listening skills, but these cute, pre-loaded devices help to turn technology into a friend. With screen-free readers, you can load up stories or use the ones that are already preloaded. But don’t introduce the reader right away. Keep working with reading to your little one as long as you can. (please turn the page)

Becoming a reader doesn’t start in kindergarten — it starts before your baby is born. When friends and family ask what you need, ask them for books, including a reliable guide to children’s literature that you can use to gain insight throughout your baby’s childhood.

Finally, sign your child up for a library card and use it regularly. All libraries have rich collections of books for children of all ages, including babies. Ask library staff for suggestions and advice. Make story hours a part of your regular routine. Our local libraries host special storytimes, puppet shows and more where things are kept short, sweet and busy — perfect for babies and toddlers!

Designed for kids 3 - 12, Yoto works with content cards: these include songs, podcasts, phonics cards (for remote learning and revision), and mindfulness. Authors include Roald Dahl, Beverly Cleary, Lewis Carroll, A.A. Milne, Jeff Kinney, and many more. Find more screen-free reader reviews com:nashvilleparent.atsearch“Grow a Reader.”

Once you have put down a foundation of reading joy for your child, you can safely navigate to using screens, only, kids can quickly opt to play games only. Screen-free readers provide relief from the constant staring and they tune-up your child’s listening ability, too. There are many screen-free readers on the market today, but don’t rely on them solely. Keep inspiring your child to read hard-copy books, read yourself and talk about what you’re reading and also ask questions about what your child is reading. Have fun with it and make reading part of the natural culture in your home and it won’t be such a chore to get your kids to read!

“I was able to see the struggles students have, whether it’s with learning to read or not having access to books,” she says. Book ‘Em is able to positively impact students through five programs, the largest of which is Reading is Fundamental. Volunteers bring books to students in 16 Title I Metro schools and read to them, providing five books a year to every student. Access to books is critical for young students because two-thirds of third graders are not reading at grade level in Middle Tennessee, says Jocelyn Kirk, reading programs coordinator. “Third grade is a really important year because that’s the flip from learning to read to reading to learn,” she says. Middle Tennessee has a lot of low-income families and children without books. That’s why Book ‘Em matters. Usually Book ‘Em has 7,000 to 10,000 books on hand, but after the pandemic hit it dwindled to a few hundred. Fortunately, local bookstore Parnassus stepped in to help Book ‘Em and donated 75,000 books to the nonprofit.

Book’em: Bringing Books and Reading to the Underserved in Middle Tennessee by Jessie Lang

Board books usually have little or no text, freeing you to improvise. As you read, you can talk to your child about what’s happening in the pictures, naming colors and shapes and mimicking expressions on the babies’ faces. Show your child how to turn the pages and do it together. Use words like gentle, soft and slow to describe turning pages. It doesn’t matter if your board book reading sessions last only a minute or so. Integrating reading with singing and expression can help reading preparation by exposing your child to words and sounds.

With babies and toddlers, look for titles that emphasize simple concepts like colors, shapes or animals. Little ones especially enjoy seeing photographs of other babies.

Susan Day is editor of this magazine, an avid reader and a mom of four.

Watching students pick out their very own book to keep is one of educator Atlee Tyree’s favorite parts of the year. Many students don’t have access to books at home, and they eagerly select one for a sibling rather than themselves since it is such a special experience when Book ‘Em visits Haywood Elementary School. When students realize they can pick out their own book, it becomes a prized possession.“Justbecause our students have limited resources and live in poverty doesn’t mean they deserve any less quality — and I think that means they deserve better quality — and Book ‘Em provides that,” says Tyree, Community Achieves site manager at Haywood Elementary School.Thenonprofit has helped thousands of children in Middle Tennessee gain access to the joy of reading since starting in 1989. Book ‘Em aims to create a more literate Nashville by igniting children’s passion for reading through book ownership. Enthusiastic volunteers help it achieve this goal, working with 18,000 children eachBookyear.‘Em provides thousands of books to students at Haywood Elementary School, and gives students the dignity of choosing from a wide variety of options, Tyree says.

Baby Faces (Dorling Kindersley) shows babies of all sorts looking happy or sad, crying or laughing. Get Ready Baby by Margaret Miller (LittleSimon) shows babies ready for any kind of day that comes their way. You are well on your way to raising a reader if you keep this up daily.

Here are Tough’s four reasons why curiosity is so important:

page) by

where kids feel they can ask questions and receive support to guide exploration.their Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it probably fired the little feline up first! And in there lies an important parenting dichotomy: curiosity may be what’s most important to inspire a love of learning in your kids, but safety boundaries matter, too. But once you have those safety parameters in place, curiosity can be the driving force that sparks your child’s intellect to know more about practically anything.

Successful students often show a rich depth of intellectual curiosity. Everyone is born with natural curiosity, but parents and teachers can strengthen it or squelch it in kids. Aim to build it up in your child, says author Paul Tough in his bestselling book, How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character (Mariner Books; 2013).

Studies show that curiosity makes your child’s brain more receptive to learning. When assisting with homework or any of your endeavors, kids’always dig deeper to find what’s interesting in it for them. Learn

“What matters most in a child’s development is not how much information we can stuff into his brain in the first few years,” Tough says. “What matters, instead, is whether we are able to help him develop a very different set of qualities, a list that includes persistence, self-control, curiosity, conscientiousness, grit and self-confidence,” he adds. But where to begin?

Spark Your CuriosityKid’s

3. It opens up new worlds and possibilities By being curious, your child will be able to see new worlds and possibilities that are normally not visible. Possibilities that are hidden behind the surface of normal life; it takes a curious mind to look beneath the surface to discover more. (please turn the Susan Day

nashvilleparent.com september 2022 25 all kids why does it matter?

1. It makes a kid’s mind active instead of passive Curious kids ask questions and search for answers. Their minds are always active. Since the mind is like a muscle which becomes stronger through continual exercise, the mental exercise caused by curiosity makes the mind stronger and stronger.

2. It makes the mind observant of new ideas When kids are curious about something, their mind expects and anticipates new ideas related to the subject. When the ideas come, they recognize them. Without curiosity, the ideas may pass right past them.

Love to

If you show enthusiasm toward learning new things, you can lead your child by example and you can provide the support your kid needs to turn homework and school academic doldrums into more positive experiences because you will know what’s going on and get curious for more together!

To be intellectually curious and interested in exploring the unknown is something that you can help to develop in your kids. It’s what drives children’s learning, Tough says. In fact, new research shows that the more curious children are, the better they do academically in reading and math once they enter school, hence the more they like to learn.

• Help your kids recognize gaps in their current knowledge.

When the School Work is Tough, Find the Spark

ake learning and curiosity part of your family culture. Many a night your kids will have homework that is less than interesting to them ... so aim to uncover what’s interesting there. Know what your kids are studying and dig in: read to find what’s interesting, play games, watch documentaries or do a little Internet surfing together.

Bonawitz (and other researchers) say that when children feel their understanding is insufficient, they will seek more information. Curiosity gives them the confidence to proceed.

HOW TO TAP INTO YOUR CHILD’S CURIOSITY: Practice the 5 W’s of wondering Look for opportunities to ask questions and wonder outloud together. Practice with the who, what, when, where, why. Point out changes Noticing changes in the world can spark a child’s desire to “figure out” how things work. Do you see how the toast looks different than the bread? What do you see that’s different? Why is that? Allow kids to try ... and fail Rather than stepping in with the answer, ask a question. For instance, the block tower keeps falling down. Ask your toddler, “Why do you think that happens?” “What can we do to make it taller?” As the parent, you know that putting the giant rectangle block on top of the tower means it will come crashing down, but your toddler doesn’t. Letting your child experiment in this way nurtures his curiosity and helps him cultivate his “inner scientist.”

nashvilleparent.com26 september 2022 4. It brings excitement into life

• Get children to predict outcomes through questions that point to a specific phenomenon. With questioning, children can actively engage their prior beliefs, see a mismatch and understand according to what they learn. The next time your kid launches a volley of questions, embrace it and encourage it. You’ll be supporting their mental development and, perhaps, even egging on the next Einstein.

Follow your child’s lead Every kid is different, and the things that ignite curiosity in one child are different for another, Tough says. Observe what captivates your child’s interest, then find ways to connect with them. Plant seeds together to discover where flowers come from; collect fall leaves to discover how trees change during the fall; fill glasses with different amounts of water and wonder with your child why they sound different when you tap the glass. Learn to be this way about the world around you and your child will follow suit.

Susan Day is editor of this magazine and a mom of four amazing kids.

Curiosity is characterized by the joy of discovery, and the motivation to seek answers to what is unknown. Jean Piaget (1896 - 1980), the Swiss psychologist who first studied understanding in children, recognized the importance of curiosity as a foundation for early learning, referring to children as “little scientists.” Today’s pediatric guidelines highlight the importance of promoting curiosity during early learning with your children, so there’s a lot that you can do to nurture their desire to explore and learn.

Back-and-forth conversation Engage in activities that promote back-and-forth conversation between you and your kids. By doing this, you’ll get a front row seat to what your child is curious about. Next, deepen the exploration of their interests by exploring books, visiting museums, finding relevant events and expanding their view of the world.

Emerging Research

Ask your kids what they want to know For example, after watching a squirrel running up and down trees in your yard or at the park, ask your child, “Where do you think he is going?,” “I wonder what is he doing?,” and “What would you like to know about squirrels?” And while younger kids may not have many questions to ask, as they grow, doing this exercise is a great way to help spark their curiosity. You guide the growth by modeling your own curiosity first.

The best thing you can do to nurture curiosity in your kids is to model it yourself. Show your child how you explore, discover and learn. Model for your kids how to find an answer when you are unsure or don’t know something. Use a wide variety of tools including the Internet, the library, documentaries and more.

You’re the most important ingredient

The lives of the curious are never dull since there are always new things that attract attention and new toys to play with. Instead of being bored by life, life becomes an adventure.

Current research says that you can create situations that prompt and guide your child’s curiosities. Harvard University cognitive scientist and researcher Elizabeth Bonawitz says curiosity is a sensation much like hunger or thirst. “It’s a physiological response that helps drive action and decision-making to support learning,” Bonawitz says. She encourages parents to literally focus on creating moments that generate a curious response:

• Highlight ambiguity. Children as young as 4 years old can recognize conflicting pieces of evidence and perceive a mismatch between a prediction and an actual occurrence. When this difference is noticed, it sparks curiosity.
