DAD BEAT By Michael W. Aldrich

Breakfast in bed ... and other Mother’s Day traditions

G

rowing up, we always did Mother’s Day the same. Dad would wake up early, put on the coffee, start the bacon and eggs and then sneak upstairs to wake up my sister and I while mom slept in.

It felt like we were on a secret mission and I was always so excited,

because I knew my job — fresh squeezed OJ — and I did not take that job lightly. I knew how much mom loved “extra pulp” so, with about a dozen oranges in front of me, I’d start to juice them one by one with the same glass juicer my parents had for decades that only came out once a year. Mom was always so excited to hear our giggles and little feet scurrying up the stairs. I remember being so proud to watch her take that first bite of bacon and sip her chilled glass of OJ. Breakfast in bed is a Mother’s Day tradition, and for good reason. After all, how many mornings has mom made breakfast for you and your little one(s)? But then again, each family is different and will find their own Mother’s Day traditions. Need some ideas? Here are a few: Give her a free day. Before I became a dad almost four years ago, I remember hearing about a friend’s “dream Mother’s Day.” All she asked of her husband and kids was to give her 24 hours free. Free of cooking, laundry, work — and free of them. I didn’t get it; what was the point of celebrating Mother’s Day without the people who made you a mother in the first place? Fast-forward to 2022 and, well, my tune has changed. Go to the movies. For those nostalgic mamas out there, a good way to share family memories is to look at old photographs or home movies. If you live near Grandma or Grandpa, ask them to pull out old photos and movies and take a trip together down memory lane. Your kids will get a kick out of the styles of clothes their mama wore — not to mention the fact that she was once a kid, too. Plant some flowers. If you have some extra space in your garden, create a real, live Mother’s Day canvas. First, buy various packets of flower seeds that grow fast and well. Then, have your kids draw a picture or write a short message (like “We love Mom”) in the garden dirt with a stick. Drop the flower seeds into the dirt lines; then cover them up, and water every few days. Before long, your picture (or message) will be blooming, and you’ll have a Mother’s Day gift that keeps on growing! Make it about her. This should be rule #1. If she has to pack up the diaper bag and head to brunch with a gift for your mom, your mom’s mom and her mom, then the holiday isn’t really about her. Whatever you do, make sure the day is about her. If you do that, she will love it — whether it’s crispy bacon and fresh-squeezed OJ in bed or just an hour alone so she can call a friend or soak in the tub.

FEED BACK QUESTION: “Our dentist diagnosed my 2-year-old with an upper lip tie and immediately wanted to cut it at the next appointment. My instinct is to leave it since it doesn’t pose an issue, but do you have a story or experience to share?”

MUCH ADO ABOUT LIP TIES “It’s an easy almost pain-free procedure when you are young, but not when you are older. I would consult with your doctor on the pros and cons and go from there. My son has no speech problems, so we waited until around age 10 to get his done. They burned it in the office and it didn’t hurt and was a simple recovery. I even got to stay in the room and watch the procedure.”

words, not mine) on the front two of her teeth where the lip tie goes between. She also had (and still has) a speech delay. She is in therapy multiple times a week because her diction is horrible. (She was only saying eight words clearly at 2 years old). The fix is quick and easy. Had her’s been caught sooner, it could have been fixed immediately ... if we knew all that could come by not fixing it.”

Terra Martinez-Cappel

Katlyn Vanatta Hunsinger

“Check with an oral surgeon. I was an oral surgery assistant for 10 years and we performed these procedures. My daughter has a lip tie and the surgeon said it didn’t need surgical intervention, but many do. Ear, nose and throat doctors do not take care of inside the mouth. Oral surgery consult is the way to go.” Donna Dority “My daughter had one undiagnosed until this year at age 3. It ended up being the cause of two cavities (the dentist’s

12 may 2022

“We had my son’s clipped because his front teeth would not close without it. It was a quick and easy procedure they did at the dentist.” Racheal Cook “My son also has this and I refused to have it cut. He is 12 now, no issues whatsoever. Also, the gap closed on its own and he never cut it, either.” Lisa Hill “Our dentist never mentions it, but we are debating having our

8 year olds cut due to speech issues. Our oldest son’s lip tie busted on its own at 3 due to a fall. Our youngest (2) has speech therapy and the dentist has mentioned getting his cut.” Crystal Cameron “Do it. My husband had one that went undiagnosed until he was 14. Went through years of speech therapy and bullying because he talked like a baby. It’s not a bad surgery and mouths heal quickly. Both of my children had it done. My first had a really bad one that prevented her from nursing. My second had a slight one but the doctor said it would probably result in speech issues later on.” Mindy Denney “My oldest, almost 9, has an extreme lip tie. She has no speech issues. She does have a gap in her two top front teeth, but that will be fixed with braces. Her dentist informed us that it wasn’t a big deal.”

nashvilleparent.com

Chelsea Crafton

“I know a lot of people do something about, it but I wanted to mention that it is OK to weigh your options and choose to do nothing. My oldest has a slight tie and my youngest has a more significant one. Neither had trouble nursing, neither have had any eating or speech issues. In the future, they will have space between their teeth and for cosmetic reasons may want to do something about it, but we have decided as parents that there is not a significant reason for doing anything. If they request getting it addressed in the future, then it is an option, but we personally don’t think braces and procedures for solely cosmetic reasons is important. For now they are not going to have anything done.” Victoria LeBlanc “My son’s dentist told us they don’t cut them if they aren’t causing issues until at least age 4 as children often fall and tear them themselves. My son did just that at age 2.” Kenna Carter

Nashville Stampede Brings PBR to Music City “The toughest sport on dirt” will fill Bridgestone Arena come August. Our new hometown team will be finalized later this month, but tickets are on sale now for what promises to be a very wild ride.

T

his summer, families will have a new — and thrilling — entertainment option to experience when professional bull riding (PBR), bucks into Music City. Nashville’s newest professional sports team — the Nashville Stampede — will compete in games at Bridgestone Arena August 19 - 21 as part of a new PBR Team Series. Two-time PBR World Champion Justin McBride (familiar to Nashville for his country music recording career) is head coach. The team is owned by Morris Communications Company (MCC). The PBR Team Series’ inaugural 10-event, 112-game regular season includes a three-day homestand event hosted by each of the eight founding teams. Nashville Stampede hosts the fourth event of the season. “Nashville is a city unlike any other,” says Nashville Stampede General Manager Tina Battock. “We are proud to represent Music City and the state of Tennessee at home and on the road, and we hope fans are ready to cheer us on to a championship,” she adds. PBR is the world’s premier bull riding organization and organizers say events will be family friendly and steeped in popular cowboy culture. “The western mystique is powerful and getting bigger,” says MCC Chairman and Morris family patriarch Billy Morris. “It’s something people everywhere want to associate with. This new bull riding league plays right into this phenomenon, and we’re so proud to be a founding team associated with it.” Tickets for the August home games are on sale now. PARENTING by Rebecca Hastings

Yes, You Can Enjoy

D

ays are slipping away. We feel them through our fingertips like the sand our kids play

with. No matter how tightly I clench my fist, the sand keeps falling. Instead of holding on so tight, maybe we need to relax. Open our hands. Let the sand rest there a moment before we reach down and grab another handful. Here are 10 ways to help you enjoy the moments with your kids this summer:

1) Introduce them to a movie from your youth Age appropriate, of course. They’ll think it’s fun to make fun of the clothing and hair and cheesy movie lines. You’ll enjoy the stroll down memory lane.

2) Let them plan a day for the family

Depending on your child’s age (this works great for teens), give them a budget and let them take the lead. It’s exciting to see what they come up with.

3) Read a chapter book to each other

Pick a book and take turn reading it outloud. For older kids, pick a book you can both read on your own and find moments to discuss it. Don’t make reading demanding and formal, just find time to slip whatever you’re reading into conversation and the connection you can enjoy.

18 may 2022

Summer Parenting You don’t have to entertain your kids this summer, but you can encourage activities and sort of just ease past the tendency to permit unlimited screen time.

4) Pick a show to watch together

Start with episode one, pop some popcorn and enjoy a good binge fest together. Since the kids don’t have to get up early during the weekdays you can do this any day of the week. Start a show-watching festival!

nashvilleparent.com

5) Go to a game or concert

It doesn’t have to be a top musician, but find a sport your kid loves or a local concert for a style of music your child enjoys. It’s simple, doesn’t cost a lot and gives you a great time out together, and it’s great if it is outdoors! Plus, this one doesn’t usually take much convincing.

Summer With the Kids 8) Play their game

With everyone on devices, we all tend to be more isolated than ever. Get involved with the game or app your kids are into. It will most likely be funny, but giving them the chance to show you how to do something creates a special bond. Recognizing their expertise helps them feel respected and that goes a long way.

9) Dream together

Even little moments offer opportunities to connect. Asking questions is a great way to see glimpses of your kid that you never imagined. Here are a few questions to get you started: What is your dream vacation? What kind of house do you think you’ll live in when you’re my age? If you could eat anything in the world, what would it be?

10) Make time, but don’t force it

Being available is one of the best ways to create connection. It doesn’t mean following your kids around, but make sure that you aren’t checking out or disappearing every time they are home. Be present and open and see what happens! Rebecca Hastings is a freelance writer and author.

Earning Screen Time Kids want to be on their screens, but we all know unlimited screen time is unhealthy. Take a moment to post this handy list on your refrigerator so your kids can earn a set-time session on their devices without you having to nag at them:

6) Be the house the kids want to come to

When you create an atmosphere your kids’ friends enjoy, you get to know the friends and see them interact together. Be goofy and silly. Have good snacks. Resist the urge to embarrass or scold. Be real and welcoming and let the rest happen naturally.

7) Serve someone else

Kids don’t really think about serving others, but once you get them started, most kids come around and even appreciate it. Find something you can do for someone else together. Read to others, clean up at a park or bring a meal to someone who could use some help. It doesn’t have to be complex, it’s just about giving.

nashvilleparent.com

WANT SCREEN TIME? FIRST ASK YOURSELF: • Have I brushed my teeth? • Am I dressed? • Did I make my bed? • Have I played for 20 minutes? • Have I done my chores? • Have I asked Mom or Dad if they need me to do anything around the house?

Go Ahead, Chase Those Waterfalls

DELICIOUS SUMMER!

Adventuring together is a rite of passage each summer. We recommend the following five hikes for parents with kids ages 6 and older — in sturdy climbing shoes, that is.

CUMMINS FALLS tnstateparks.com/parks/cummins-falls 390 Cummins Falls Lane Cookeville, TN 931-268-7223 A natural area with inherent safety risks, the waterfall is located in a gorge (permit required from the website) and it makes for some strenuous hiking, crossing slippery rocks and wading and/or swimming. Children under 12 must wear a life vest and be with an adult. Park hours are 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

FOSTER FALLS / GREETER FALLS

tnstateparks.com/parks/activity-detail/south-cumberland-hiking GREETER: 500 Greeter Falls Road Altamont, TN 37301 FOSTER: 498 Foster Falls Road Sequatchie, TN 37374 These two waterfalls are near one another in South Cumberland State Park so you can visit two in one day. Access a GPS map for directions to the trailheads on the website. Your kids will love the swing bridge at the base of the falls. This is a popular climbing spot, and you may be able to spot some climbers.

By volume, Cummins Falls is the eighth-largest waterfall in Tennessee.

Chasing Waterfalls with Kids LOST CREEK FALLS

RUTLEDGE FALLS

STILLHOUSE FALLS

Lost Creek State Natural Area White’s Cave Road, Sparta, TN

Rutledge Falls Road (park across from Rutledge Falls Baptist Church, 1289 Rutledge Falls Road, Tullahoma, TN 37388)

Stillhouse Hollow Falls Trail Mt. Pleasant, TN 38474

tn.gov (search “Lost Creek Falls”)

Take your kids to where The Jungle Book was filmed in 1994. The fall opens to a large bowl with no surface drainage, so cold air is trapped in summer. The nearby Lost Creek Cave may be too slippery for kids. Lost Creek Falls are only 0.2 miles from the parking lot. A bit more quiet than other popular waterfalls.

cityofmanchestertn.com

A short walk from the parking lot makes this very easy for kids. The trail is on private property, but open to the public. Spring water makes a perfect swimming hole. The steep section to the base of the falls is slippery, and you can feel the temperature change as you go down.

tn.gov (search “Stillhouse Falls”)

This Class-1 scenic recreational state natural area includes the Stillhouse Hollow Falls which can be seen by walking two-thirds of a mile along the easy trail. Cross several foot bridges and follow the white paint marked on the trees. Cold water makes an easy swimming hole. Lush surroundings make for a nice picnic spot, too.

TIPS FOR DOING WATERFALL HIKES WITH KIDS • Wear good hiking shoes • Pack a few tasty snacks • Bring a waterproof instant camera • Bring swimsuits • Consider doing the same hike over again on another day because kids love familiarity • Go THEIR pace, not yours • Wear bug spray and sunscreen • Consider packing a magnifying glass • Let kids lead • Consider bringing binoculars
