Excellence matters. Zaiden and his mom know. For much of his first 8 years, Zaiden lived life with a tracheostomy (trach), a breathing tube inserted through the neck into his airway. It was believed that Zaiden would never be able to live without his trach. Knowing that life was uncomfortable and difficult for her son, his mom, Beunikia, turned to the pediatric ear, nose and throat experts at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Here, Dr. Christopher Wootten and the nationally known Complex AeroDigestive Evaluation Team (CADET) worked together to help Zaiden become trach-free using a complex and innovative surgery called tracheal resection. Today, Zaiden enjoys climbing on anything he can find, dancing and SpongeBob. He’s a busy guy who is full of life and smiles. Beunikia has a special bond with his Children’s Hospital medical team, saying they kept their promise. They didn’t give up on Zaiden until they found a way to help him. Follow @vumcchildren on Instagram for more inspiring stories like Zaiden’s.

Me and My Royal Spatula

T

he truth is, I didn’t have my first baby until I was 31, my comrade, my girl. And then I had three more babies, boom, boom, boom, bouncing boys. My twenties were all about me; no baby fit into MY plans, but whoa, once I was married at 30, they wiggled their

adorable little tushes into my brain. And you know what happens when we get that way. For me, it was always much too easy. I threw myself into motherhood full-time with my nest full of chicks. I was good at it. I liked adventures and surprises and all of the rest that goes into being a mom — and that “all the rest” part holds seconds, minutes, hours, days and months that simply are not your own. I can’t wax romantic about having zero free time. I was always in a soccer or football or hockey space, always cooking or packing a lunch, always cleaning, always readying for a school event, always trying to get to know the kids blowing in and and out of our door, always losing the organization battle — it was flipping hard. I was always the last into bed at night with my man snoring obliviously away. Not complaining, he’s a hard worker. But it ‘twas I who did the laundry, managed schedules, planned appointments and just did all the doing that needed doing in order to make our lives move along more easily. Now, because I have but one chick left in the house, my work has been demoted to part-time from the involved years of deep-mother work where I reigned supreme in the kitchen with my royal septer, um, I mean, spatula. Now though, raising kids seems harder for moms. My kids didn’t have smartphones until middle school (I doubt now if they really needed them then, but I remember caving to the pleas). Life was more of an open book in our household because we talked rather than scrolled. I’m not shaming anybody here for letting kids have devices — they all have them now — but doing battle for my toddlers’ attention? Without a device was hard enough. So here we are. It’s a pretty big divide: how I raised my kids compared to how you’re raising yours. I only had to flip off the TV screen if I wanted a child to make his bed. The mental toll alone of trying to get a full night’s sleep when you have a crying baby to parenting your toddler’s iPad, to knowing what your preteen is doing on social media is enough to make me cry uncle. I wish there were a magic potion to help make it all easier, I could sell it and get rich, but alas, life is rarely serendipitous like that. But the time has come for you to be a no-nonsense parent so you can raise a resilient kid. Even with all of the forces working against us (world affairs, technology, a little pandemic tossed in), we must buck up for our kids. The going has gotten tough, and it’s possibly going to get tougher. Know that you are powerful and you must wield that power wisely. And without judgment. Whether you have one child at home or more, your heart will be all in for the rest of your days. You can do it. And as they say, carry on.

FEED BACK QUESTION: “I’m a new mama, my baby is only 3 weeks. I’m having a really hard time staying awake with her during her night feeding, specifically the one at 2 or 3 a.m. I’ll literally fall asleep with her laying on top of me. I need tips on either how to stay awake with her better or how to co-sleep safely. Her bassinet is already in our bedroom. Any advice is appreciated.”

HOW DO I STAY AWAKE AT 3 A.M.? “A SwaddleMe By Your Side Sleeper helped me so much for the first five months. It is the safest way I found to cosleep, so you can literally have Baby in bed with you, but with his own space.” Cheyenne Fansher “Use a low-wattage light to try to get more sleep. Honestly, I have a recliner where I recline just the back. I often doze while nursing. I just won’t sleep well knowing there is a baby in bed with me. It’s more restful than attempting to cosleep for me. Plus, I’ve seen too many pitfalls with many friends who have coslept when their kids are older and refuse to sleep on their own bed for any significant amount of time.” Kelly Peterson “A recliner is not a safe place to fall asleep with a baby. It’s actually safer to sleep on a bed when you take precautions than it is to sleep in a recliner. Look

12 april 2022

up the safe seven of co-sleeping for great info on how to make bed a safe place to sleep. Safe co-sleeping is a great way to get rest. If you don’t want to bedshare, then you can get a sidecar cosleeper so that Baby is next to you in the bed area, but can be on their own sleep surface. Please, if tired, do not nurse on a couch or in a recliner where you may fall asleep; it can be very dangerous for the baby because they can slide into a crack or position which asphyxiates them.” Victoria LeBlanc “I also used to fall asleep while nursing/burping my babies at night. So I would sit up in my bed to do so. That way, I never had to worry about rolling over on them. (Many people told me I wouldn’t do that but that thought always terrified me).” Debra Jacobs Bardin “Sit up in a chair or someplace that’s not your bed. I was terrified of fall asleep while nursing in bed since a family friend lost their baby by sharing a bed. I

play around on my phone (Solitaire), browse online or watch videos on “mute.” Nothing that requires thinking like reading a book. Amazon Prime can be your best friend and worst enemy at 2 a.m.!” Molly Regan “I made sure to get up and move to a chair or out into the living room, getting up and moving helped me stay away.” Helen Nation “I always watched videos on my phone or scrolled the Internet and I always sat up. It helped. But my little love is 8 months old now and we cosleep. I get so much more rest.” Stephanie Jones “I usually have to get on my phone and watch Netflix or something or I’ll fall asleep.” Chelsea Crafton “Are you actually getting up and going to feed Baby or are you co- sleeping? When I had to go to my baby’s room to nurse, I

nashvilleparent.com

could stay awake much easier than when Baby was in my room.” Amber JoLynn “Sounds weird, but read to Baby during night feedings. Keeps you awake and paying attention and Baby gets to hear the sound of your voice.” Cassie Smith Newsom

THE ABC’S OF SAFE SLEEP A lone - the safest place for babies to sleep is alone in the same room as their parents without any people, pillows, blankets or stuffed animals. B ack - Always place Baby on his back to sleep at night and during nap time.

C rib - It is important for

infants to have their own safe space to sleep. This does not include a sofa, cushion, or their parent’s bed. SOURCE: Vanderbilt University Medical Center (vumc.org).

Swimming Time! GET YOUR KIDS THE LESSONS THEY NEED, THEN GIVE THEIR SKILLS A BOOST BY JOINING A SWIM TEAM

W

hat’s the saying? “Don’t be afraid to jump in, you’ll only succeed if you try.” Well, that was the story of my toddler’s first swim lesson with Sea Love Swim in Nashville. When he was born, he loved bath time — kicking and splashing were some of his favorite things. But when he turned three, he went through an unexpected and unfortunate “I don’t want to get wet” phase. What better time to start swim lessons? The goal of lesson one was to simply get him comfortable in the water. I got into the heated pool at Bellevue’s Boost Fitclub (one of Sea Love Swim’s three site locations) and reached my arms up hoping he’d run and jump to me like it was a movie. Nope. He wanted nothing to do with me or this oversized bathtub I was in. In fact, when he realized what was going on, he went into tantrum-mode. Our instructor, TJ, swooped in to the

rescue. You could tell she works with kids a lot. She whipped out some toy dinosaurs and slowly but surely got my toddler into the water. We splashed, blew bubbles and sang songs — he was starting to get more acclimated to the water. By the second lesson, there was no more slowly but surely. My little guy was leaping off the sides of the pool into my arms, kicking his legs while and even floating on his back (with my assistance). He went from being afraid of the water to a little Aquaman, such a noticeable improvement! He was even excited for bath times again. I know children develop at different rates, and what may be right for one child may not be appropriate for another. (My toddler, for example, is developmentally behind his peers, at least in some respects.) Still, the AAP recommends swim lessons for children aged 1 and up. Knowing how to swim is a skill we should all have, whether you are 2 or 92, not only because it reduces the risk of

NEW PARENTS OUTSIDE

By Sandra Gordon

Is There a GoodLooks Gene?

You have red hair, your hubby has brown. Does that mean your baby will be a red-head? If you’re wondering who your baby will look like ... genetics counselors can shed some light.

W

hen I was pregnant with my first child, I thought it was a given my baby would have curly, strawberry-blond hair. Based on my faint recollection of high school science classes, I figured that’s what you’d get by mixing my husband’s curly red hair with my straight blond locks. So when my daughter arrived with a shock of darkbrown hair, I was truly amazed.

You may be just as surprised by what your baby looks like at birth. The so-called classic model of genetics — that curly hair is dominant over straight, for example, doesn’t hold up anymore. “Genes are much more complicated than we ever imagined,” says Vivian Weinblatt, a certified genetic counselor and former president of the National Society of Genetic Counselors. Researchers now know that there isn’t just one dominant or recessive

gene for hair color, eye color and the like, but a large group of them. The genes that ultimately get expressed overpower or outnumber the others. It’s still fun to guess who your baby will take after as you wait for her arrival, but it helps to have some general rules in mind. Here, experts spill their secrets about the science of good looks: (please turn the page)

WHAT WILL BABY LOOK LIKE? Gender Genes Your baby’s gender is set when sperm and egg connect at conception. A woman’s egg carries one X gender chromosome, and the father’s sperm carries either an X or a Y chromosome. If an X-carrying sperm fertilizes the egg, the baby will be a girl; if a Y-carrying sperm fertilizes the egg, it will be a boy. In other words, girls have two X-gender chromosomes and boys have an X and a Y. At conception, the cards are also dealt for your baby’s build and appearance, says Jill Fonda Allen, a board-certified genetic counselor with the maternal fetal medicine program at GW Medical Faculty Associates in Washington, DC. That’s because your baby also inherits 22 other pairs of chromosomes (one set from each parent for a total of 46), which largely determine growth and development, as well as everything from eye and hair color to skin tone, eye lash length and nose shape.

The Park Avenue Nutritionist’s Plan (St. Martin’s Press; 2008.) So even if there’s a legacy of overweight people in your family, or if you have personally battled weight problems your whole life, your child isn’t necessarily destined to follow suit. But it’s all the more reason to help your child establish healthy diet and exercise habits by setting a good example early on. The Eyes Have It Many newborns, especially those not of Asian or African American descent, are born with light-blue or gray eyes. But they

Cleft chins, for example, are more common in boys than girls. And some traits, like your baby’s adorable dimples, may become less marked with age or disappear completely. Spitting Image Why do children tend to look so much like their brothers and sisters? Approximately half of a baby’s genes are exact copies of a siblings’ genes, says certified genetic counselor, Virginia Corson. “But you can still have a child who doesn’t look like anybody else in your family,”says Bruce Lahn, Ph.D., a professor of human genetics. In that case, your baby may share less than 50 percent of his genes with his siblings. How? During conception, genes can mutate (change slightly) or combine in a novel way, dramatically affecting your child’s appearance, Lahn says. The Long and Short of It Will your baby grow up to be taller like your partner, or shorter like you, your mother and your grandmother? Or will they wind up somewhere in the middle? “Tall parents tend to have taller children and short parents tend to have shorter children,” Boughman says. Still, two short parents could have a tall child, and vice versa. And a tall and short parent could have a short, tall or medium-height child. Environment can also influence height. A poor diet, for example, can keep tallness genes from fully expressing themselves.

Hair Apparent What color will your baby’s hair be? Here’s a general rule: “Two blondhaired parents are likely to have a blond-haired baby, especially if there are many people with light hair in their families,” says Joann Boughman, Ph.D., executive vice president of the American Society of Human Genetics. The same holds You can still have a child who doesn’t true for two brown-, black-, or redlook like anybody else in your family hair parents with family members because genes can change slightly or with similar hair color. But if Mom and Dad come from different ethnic combine in a new way during backgrounds — say, Mom’s distant conception, dramatically affecting relatives came from Sweden, Dad’s your child’s appearance. from Italy -- all bets are off.
